Delta police announced a major drug bust in South Delta.

According to police, a concern from the community regarding drug dealing led to the arrests of more than a dozen people in this city and Richmond.

Firearms, a large amount of drugs and vehicles were seized with evidence indicating links to the Hells Angels and the UN gang.

In August 2020, the Delta Police Crime Reduction Unit (CRU) began investigating a dial-a-dope operation in South Delta.

Dubbed “Project Rolling Thunder” and “Project Big Smoke”, there were two main thrusts of the investigation, a news release explains, adding warrants were executed in two locations in Delta and three in Richmond.

In Project Rolling Thunder, total cash seized was approximately $193,000, as well as $70,000 worth of engagement rings, two ATVs, three Harley Davidson motorcycles with “support your local Hells Angels” stickers, as well as seven additional vehicles with some having hidden compartments for transport.

As far as the drug total street value, the volume and value is still being tabulated by a drug expert, but an initial estimate is $250,000.

“What had started as a response to community frustration over street level drug dealing, quickly grew into a significant investigation for our Crime Reduction Unit,” said Superintendent Kelly Young, head of the Investigations Bureau for Delta Police.

“In addition to the drugs and firearms seizures, our initial search warrants yielded even more information to keep the investigation going.”

On Oct. 28, 2020, Delta Police CRU with the assistance of Richmond RCMP,

E-Division RCMP, the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team, and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit –BC, executed search warrants at the three suspected commercial marihuana grow operations in Richmond.

As far as Project Big Smoke, police believe a large scale illicit cannabis production/distribution operation was operating under the guise of a medical marijuana licence.

Total cannabis seized includes 18,145 plants and 1,394 pounds of dried cannabis ready for street sale. The dried cannabis has a value of about $1.8 million.

“Investigators believe these sites were capable of producing approximately $18 million dollars annually of black market cannabis sales,” said Young.

Police reiterate that evidence seized indicate links to organized crime, specifically the Hells Angels and the UN Gang.

Investigators anticipate forwarding a number of criminal charges under both the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act and the Cannabis Act to Crown Counsel.

Will other Delta schools soon join the first Fraser Health was forced to shut down due to COVID-19?

A cluster of cases occurred at Jarvis Elementary, prompting the health region last weekend to close that North Delta school for two weeks. The listed dates of exposure were Nov. 3, 4, 5, 6 and 9.

A couple of other Metro Vancouver schools were also closed at the same time due to outbreaks or clusters.

The health authority said it is working closely with the Delta School District to manage the situation at Jarvis where six COVID-19-positive cases were identified.

The health region explained the closure was due to the staffing challenges presented by the cluster.

Meanwhile, Fraser Health last Friday also issued an early notification letter for a COVID-19 exposure at Richardson Elementary, stating that an individual who attended the school on Nov. 4 and 5 had tested positive for COVID-19. The person infected is self-isolating at home.

Fraser Health will only phone staff and students that have been identified as needing to self-isolate for 14 days from when they were exposed.

The increasing number of cases in B.C. prompted B.C. Teachers Federation president Teri Mooring to call on the province act swiftly, noting teachers, support staff and students need to be able to physically distance.

“With class sizes as they are now, teachers find it virtually impossible to maintain physical distancing in classrooms. Some school districts such as Vancouver have already reduced their class size to 15 students to enforce safe spaces, a limit that ought to be immediately implemented in all school

districts in the Fraser Health region.

This position is strongly held by all BC teachers; a motion to this effect was passed over the weekend at the BCTF’s Representative Assembly, a body comprised of 300 teachers elected from across the province,” Mooring wrote to Premier John Horgan.

The Delta school district has not initiated smaller class sizes, instead following the direction of public health authorities.

In a letter to parents last week, Delta district superintendent Doug Sheppard gave a reminder of safety procedures everyone should follow.

He also noted students have adapted extremely well to health and safety protocols.

Throughout the school day, staff take

great care to ensure students are kept within their learning groups/cohorts, including ensuring that students are not socializing with students from outside their cohort during recess and lunch break or, if they are, ensuring they maintain two metres distance from them, he explained.

Meanwhile, the BCTF last week also said it was encouraged by several recommendations made by the Labour Relations Board after the union filed an application in September over health and safety concerns in schools.

The recommendations do not address the BCTF’s calls for a mandatory mask policy, however.

In a previous interview, Susan Yao, president of the Delta Teachers’ Association, said teachers want faster testing and faster confirmation of cases in an effort to decrease the lag time between an exposure event and the public notification.

Yao also wants to see masks required in all classrooms.

Fraser Health updates its school exposure cases on its website at fraserhealth.ca.

As of the start of this week, Burnsview, Delta Secondary, Sands Secondary as well as Gray and Heath elementary schools reported exposure events in addition to the cluster at Jarvis.

A better understanding of COVID19 community transmission levels will help cities like Delta make informed decisions when it comes to facilities and safety plans.

That’s what Mayor George Harvie is saying in a letter to Premier John Horgan, reiterating Delta and other Fraser Health communities’ request for the province to release communityspecific data.

“As municipalities, we are committed and uniquely positioned to supporting senior governments, residents, businesses and other stakeholders during the challenges of the pandemic. To perform these functions effectively, we need more granular and frequent data,” Harvie said.

He also noted more detailed local COVID-19 data would help guide city decision making and resource allocation while working with businesses and community organizations as they try to stay open, economically viable but safe.

Also signed by Surrey Mayor Doug

McCallum, White Rock Mayor Darryl Walker, City of Langley Mayor Val van den Broek and Langley Township Mayor Jack Froese, the letter notes local data would help cities tailor community messaging, implement preventative measures, focus enforcement and work with the health region on any other measures.

The BC Centre for Disease Control recently released its latest municipallevel data on how many people had been diagnosed in their local communities.

The cumulative numbers include the month of October.

According to the BCCDC, there were 428 cases in Delta since January, but the number isn’t broken down to the individual communities of Ladner, Tsawwassen or North Delta.

Last month, the BCCDC reported 207 cases confirmed in Delta since the start of the pandemic, while the previous month’s update had 101 cases overall confirmed in Delta.

Despite having a much smaller population, Delta exceeded Richmond which had 411 cases so far.

FHA commends Delta healthcare workers CAMERON THOMSON

Reflecting on Delta Hospital’s COVID-19 outbreak, the chief medical health officer for Fraser Health addressed the outbreak’s challenges and the heroism of healthcare workers who brought the outbreak to an end.

Declared over on Oct. 26, the outbreak lasted for 30 days and infected 26 staff and 19 patients, of which the virus killed seven. When the outbreak was declared on Sept. 16, Fraser Health immediately implemented precautions, including enhanced cleaning, contact tracing and weekly hospital-wide COVID-19 tests.

“This was a particularly difficult outbreak. Not just for the hospital but really for the entire community,” Dr Elizabeth Brodkin said in an interview with the Optimist. “The way that hospital staff and the rest of Fraser Health and the Delta community itself came together to support the hospital during that outbreak really was impressive and it was one of the most positive things about the entire experience.”Aspects that made Delta Hospital’s outbreak especially challenging were the amount of time the outbreak lasted and the number of people it impacted.

Brodkin said COVID-19 can be brought into a hospital by a patient, a

In the case of Delta Hospital’s outbreak, the case that ignited the outbreak originated from a patient. Brodkin said the initial patient did not survive the disease.

From the first COVID-19 positive patient, the virus spread quickly through the first floor until it was contained to the second floor and thanks to healthcare worker’s efforts it did not spread further.

Brodkin said the patients being cared for in the second floor unit were of the same age range of patients in care homes. This brought its own set of chal-

lenges including multiple health issues and behavioural issues.

“The death rate, although it was tragic, was not perhaps surprising given the similarity of these patients to the patients that are in long term care,” Brodkin said.

Another difficulty associated with the outbreak was the number of community transmissions that contributed to infection rate.

“People who are younger and healthier don’t necessarily become sick with it or their symptoms are very mild and they simply don’t realize they have even

become infected,” Brodkin said.

While Brodkin said she didn’t think the hospital’s processes needed to be changed following the end of the outbreak she said it served as a reminder as to how challenging and insidious the virus is.

Even with COVID-19 cases in the province climbing to all-time highs, Brodkin says there are no plans to close Delta Hospital to new admissions as was done out of caution during the outbreak. She took a moment to thank the healthcare workers that braved the virus on a daily basis.

“It was because of them that we were able to continue providing services there and to provide the best possible care to the patients but I’m sure it was very challenging,” she said. “It’s probably a scary thing to come to work when you know there’s COVID present at your workplace and they need to be absolutely commended for continuing to provide professional and exemplary service.”

Brodkin went on to say that although the Delta Hospital outbreak is over, COVID-19 transmission continues in the community.

“It is accelerating, other hospitals have been impacted and we are proud and grateful for our staff who continue to work in those settings even when they know COVID is present,” she said.

Why masks are not mandated

B

ritish Columbians have been nimble in adapting their individual actions to slow the spread of COVID19 in our communities over the last 10 months, and it has had a big impact.

Our actions have helped keep our hospitals, schools and workplaces open - and protect the ones we love.

Such essential actions include maintaining a safe distance from others, cleaning our hands and staying home if we get sick. Using masks appropriately is another important example of an individual act that results in a collective good. Each of these is a layer of protection to guard against a virus that never rests.

Some people are asking when we will see masks mandated in B.C. The answer is that they already are.

The mandate to use masks appropriately is a cornerstone of businesses’ and organizations’ COVID-19 safety plans, and is embedded in our healthcare facilities’ operational policies and restart protocols in other public institutions.

Despite how it might appear when we watch the news or go on social media, research shows that most of us in B.C. are doing the right things most of the time. Ordering universal mask use in all situations creates unnecessary challenges with enforcement and stigmatization.

Each day, we are continuing to learn more about the virus and how it spreads. Right now, we are seeing rapid transmission in social gatherings where masks would not be worn anyway, in certain workplaces and risky indoor settings, like group fitness activities. Provincial health officer orders are always a last resort and we have used them carefully to address these recent trends.

The orders we have in place now complement our clear and expressed expectation that people will wear masks in indoor public places like shopping malls, stores, on ferries and transit.

An order can never replace our personal commitment. We need to be responsible for our own actions - that is how we all pull together. I wear a mask, and I expect each of you who can to wear one too.

We need to keep kids engaged, learning about food & farming

W

e are planning to plant this time of year in the Delta School District. The young farmers are taught how to read a seed chart and they each get to vote for vegetables from a list that produces best results. I give them a list of 10 initial vegetables and they pick the top five from these choices.

I tell them to close their eyes and picture the vegetables as they choose. They are told to close their eyes so they don’t rely on what their friends’ choices are.

Invariably, and especially with the younger kids, there are squinty eyes peeking through finger cracks to see what everyone else is doing.

Once the five choices are made, we will take time in our sessions over the coming weeks to taste the choices first before actually planting the seed in the spring. This way they taste their choices once prior to seeding and then again at harvest time. Over the years it has been very gratifying for me to note that,

in general terms, if they plant it they will eat it. For parents scoring at home, this is a fine reason to set up a growing environment at home to encourage healthy eating habits.

We are doing our crop planning a little early this year because I want to buy the seed before the big rush comes. Many of you may recall that there was a “run” on seed purchasing in the spring. Many retail outlets sold out quickly as people at least contemplated growing their own. Nursery businesses, retail stores and specialty shops all had banner years this spring and that will likely

be matched again in a few months time.

On a larger scale, seed availability has been affected by the COVID19 pandemic.

“Availability and cost of transport due to the reduced number of commercial flights; fewer personnel available for production, transportation and documentation processes; and a contraction in the market for plants and seeds is creating problems in terms of the production of seed for international trade, as well as access to high quality seed of modern varieties for domestic agriculture.”(Trade for Development news July 16, 2020) The inability to receive seed in a timely manner and in appropriate volumes may prove problematic for many farmers in LDC’s. Combined with a changing climate, COVID-19 will contribute to farming problems in many regions of the world.

We are lucky to live where we do but we should not be complacent. We need to keep our young people engaged and learning about food and farming.

Beloved community has lifted up family

Editor: On Oct. 20 my family’s life was shattered in an instant. On that day my husband, Doug Ross, lost his own life in a tragic ATV accident in Cranbrook.

Shock, disbelief, confusion and horror suddenly became our new world.

When we lived in Surrey, Doug never missed an opportunity to urge me to move our family to Tsawwassen where he grew up, so we did and the years flew by in a whirlwind of new friends and neighbours, school activities and play dates, hockey and baseball, barbecues and picnics at the beach. Doug was involved everywhere and loved every minute - from renovating people’s homes through his construction company to even being a fixture at the City of Delta doing all the renovations for the city and coaching all three of his sons in the South Delta Hockey League.

He was a familiar figure in the neighborhood as he played catch and street hockey with our boys as well as making sure our dogs got their even except too and his greatest joy was in giving to the community through his involvement in youth sports. Life was good.

His wife and his children came first and you would know that by just speaking to him for a moment. Then came the accident.

In this strangest and most difficult of times, Dr. Bonnie Henry consistently

beseeches us to be kind to one another.

In a heartbeat, the community of Tsawwassen gathered me, Noah, Liam and Holden in its strong embrace of love and support.

Food appeared and has not stopped; friends and neighbours take the boys to their practices and games and on outings; a beloved neighbour changes the sheets and keeps the laundry going; a bed is donated; a cleaning service is arranged; a Go Fund Me is started; hugs, tears, fears and memories are shared. But perhaps the simple story of a blanket speaks to the generous heart that defines this community. Needless to say, I have had great difficulty sleeping and was constantly chilled.

I thought a heated blanket might help and so a friend put out a simple request on social media. Within hours there was a knock at the door. When I answered it nobody was there but on the porch was a box with a brand new electric blanket. A humble request quietly answered without a need for acknowledgement or thanks. Just kindness.

We don’t have adequate words to express our deepest gratitude to this beloved community. Tsawwassen - you are a community with a huge heart and from the bottom of our heart to yours thank you.

Teens unfortunately don’t get it Editor: Sadly I have watched as crowds of teens come from their high school at 10:30 a.m. and crowd together as Arthur Drive and 48th Ave. standing shoulder to shoulder without masks and touching one another.

They seem to be oblivious or unaware of this pandemic and are not listening to Dr. Bonnie Henry and her advice.

Parents, please take the time to educate your children as to the severity of

this pandemic as I am sure these same kids do not want to bring this virus home to their parents or grandparents as it could kill them.

Surely, past history of pandemics and plagues can be used to direct their thoughts in the protection of others.

This is no joke nor something to be played with. Please pay attention to Dr. Henry.

Please do not kill me as I would like to do a little more fishing.

They’ve cleared an important hurdle as they continue to get the word out how the community can take back its hospice.

That’s what members of Take Back Delta Hospice are saying following British Columbia’s top court rejecting an appeal by the Delta Hospice Society’s current board to block membership applications by Delta residents who support the legal procedure medical assistance in dying (MAiD) being available at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner.

In a ruling released Friday, the B.C. Court of Appeal found the society’s bylaws include no provision to reject membership applications based on people’s views on MAiD. The appeal was filed by the current board which wanted to overturn an earlier petition to the B.C. Supreme Court, which successfully halted a planned special meeting by the board to have the society’s constitution amended to become Christian-based.

That petition by Chris Pettypiece, Sharon Farrish and former board president Jim Levin followed the current DHS leadership rejecting hundreds of membership applications by residents opposed to the board’s actions.

The B.C. Opposed to providing MAiD at the local hospice, the board and its president Angelina Ireland reversed a decision by the previous board to allow MAiD. Pettypiece told the Optimist this week they’ve talked to hundreds of people over the past several months who are also upset about what’s been happening to their hospice.

He said his group will continue to reach out to educate the community on how it can get involved.

“We know how people feel about these issues and we just want to make sure they know how they can be heard in this process. This really

confirms that the community has a right to vote in the society and to participate. You need to participate in democracy,” he said.

Pettypiece said much work remains to be done prior to the next annual general meeting, although it’s not clear at this point what format the meeting will have or when it takes place due to COVID-19.

In response to the appeal court ruling, Ireland said the ruling denies the society the ability to protect itself from a hostile takeover through a mass membership drive, and that the decision puts members and the society’s constitution is at risk of being overrun by ideologues seeking to impose MAiD, which is not congruent with palliative care and is contrary to its values.

The board will seriously consider appealing to the Supreme Court of Canada, she stated.

Last week hundreds of local voices influenced Delta council’s decision to remove restrictions surrounding secondary suites.

During a regular council meeting on Monday, Nov. 9, councillors viewed a report which included just under 1,300 responses to proposed changes to the secondary suite zoning bylaws.

Feedback was gathered through a combination of online submissions through the Let’s Talk Delta website and physical responses.

The proposed changes were centered around the elimination of zoning requirements, which would allow for three on-site parking spaces regardless of parking configuration and a minimum lot width of 15 meters. Another proposed change was the discharge of restrictive covenants that prohibit secondary suites on properties where no variances would be required.

Overall, the feedback received was largely in support of any changes that would allow for more parking. Of the 180 responses that were in support of the proposed changes, 117 said more

suites are needed to increase the availability of affordable rental housing and that property owners need suites to improve affordability.

However, of the 150 comments received from those who were opposed or undecided on the changes, 83 brought up concerns with street parking availability, narrowed drive aisles, poor sightlines, and pedestrian safety.

It was this concern that Coun. Lois Jackson identified as something she could not support.

“I have no problem with making things easier to establish new housing that we need,” Jackson said. “But I’m very concerned about making major changes to our housing policy that we don’t have the impacts for yet.”

Jackson added the need for population increase projections before any changes to secondary suite bylaws went ahead.

Other councillors also voiced concerns over the parking issue, but ultimately more sang the praises of increased rental housing and voted accordingly.

Jackson was the only councillor to vote against the proposed bylaw changes.

Delta council calls for accessible gas stations

The City of Delta is bringing the issue of accessibility and inclusion at Delta gas stations directly to the corporations responsible.

At its Monday Nov. 9th meeting, council voted to send letters from the mayor’s office to companies representing various gas stations in Delta. The letter will ask the companies to make improvements to full service refueling accessibility for residents with mobility issues.

The issue of self-service and full-service gas stations is part of a larger history of bylaws in the Lower Mainland. A report made to council in late October detailed some of this history, documenting that in 2014 a zoning bylaw was changed to eliminate reference to self-serve pumps because a survey found many Delta gas stations were not operating within the bylaw’s definitions for types of service provided.

Since full serve fuelling services are considered a business decision, and Delta does not regulate business practices, the city removed the requirement.

As bylaws don’t operate retroactively, if the bylaw were to be amended to

require full service at gas stations, the new requirements would only apply to new or rebuilt gas stations.

“It is a corporate social responsibility issue for them to be aware of the implications of their franchises and how they’re being considered in the community,” said Coun. Jeannie Kanakos.

Mayor George Harvie chimed in remarking on his own experience filling up his car at gas stations around Delta saying the stations need to do a better job of having the number to call for assistance clearly presented.

While signs may be few, the report found most major companies have policies to accommodate people with mobility issues. Some stations have intercom systems at the pumps which customers can request assistance through. There are also online resources like Google maps and Esso Fuel Finder which can locate stations with full service.

The motion to send the letters was passed unanimously by council with the added recommendation that the letters also be sent to MP Carla Qualtrough and MLAs Ian Paton and Ravi Kahlon.

Out of 20 gas stations in Delta there are currently nine that provide full service at the pumps.

The City of Delta will revisit how to get public access through part of a Ladner riverfront dike, which had been blocked by a property owner.

In a recent letter to Delta council, which was also sent to MLA Ian Paton and MP Carla Qualtrough, a local resident asked the city to again look at how it can

get legal public access through the property at 4671 River Road West, along the top of the existing dike, which was blocked by a fence 10 years ago.

The dikes between the Westham Island Bridge and Elliott Street are located within either Delta or privately held lands and are protected by rights-of-ways for dike and drainage maintenance purposes.

Most of the dike areas between 40th Street and the Ladner core also have rights-of-ways for public access which allows the people unfettered access across otherwise privately held lands.

A 2010 report to council notes the property in question, however, does not, but had historically permitted access to the public, despite the lack of a right-of-way.

However, the owner had rejected the offers, listing the property for sale at a higher value.

Staff also note the last offer was made in 2018 and that the property is no longer for sale.

Council last week agreed to discuss the issue at its next executive council meeting.

*November 10th, 12:37 p.m., 4900 block Canoe Pass Way: Police attended a motor vehicle incident that involved a vehicle in a mall parking lot. While waiting for a tow truck, the driver stated that he needed to get an item from the car before it was towed and

retrieved a non-lethal weapon from the driver’s seat area. When the driver was asked about the non-lethal weapon, the driver stated that it was for protection. The driver was fully cooperative and understanding when police advised that the non-lethal weapon would be seized. *November 12th, 2:08 p.m., 5700 block 12th Ave: Police observed a male leave a liquor establishment and enter the driver’s seat of his vehicle. Police then conducted a traffic stop to check for sobriety and detected a distinct odour of liquor. An Approved Screening Device demand was read and the male was issued a 24 hour driving prohibition.

The male surrendered his interim drivers’ license and chose to walk home. *November 13th, 4:40 p.m., 55a St: Complainant reported that she witnessed a

vehicle hit another vehicle that was unoccupied and parked and subsequently fled the scene. Police met the complainant at the scene and observed the vehicle to have significant damage. Police made contact with the driver who admitted to colliding with the vehicle and leaving the scene. There were no injuries and the driver was issued a ticket. *November 15th, 2:25 a.m., 11700 block Walalee Dr: Complainant reported hearing two loud bangs outside his residence and requested police conduct a walk around of the exterior of his property. Police attended, conducted a walk around, and confirmed no broken windows or anything suspicious. It was a windy night and the noise could have been caused by his yard tools swinging around.

November 9th, 9:51 p.m., Grove Ave 55b St: Complainant reported an unknown male who had appeared to be heavily intoxicated and unable to stand. Police attended and found the male who had a large cut above his left eye which appeared to be caused by a fall. The male advised he had been drinking for several hours and had a suitcase with him, as he was between places to stay. The male was then transported to the hospital to have his injuries cared for.

November 13th, 8:33 a.m., 3400 Block of Hwy 17a: Two males were located by police in a field and were observed discharging shotguns and hunting migratory game birds over decoys while in the field. The males had parked on

the highway and had entered the property on foot. Police confirmed with the property owner that the males were not authorized to be on the property. The two males were served tickets under the Wildlife Act. Both males were warned for other licensing violations. Nine ducks were seized and transported to a bird rehabilitation facility. *November 13th, 11:49 a.m., Boundary Bay Dyke: Complainant reported seeing a male dressed in camouflage walking with a shotgun.

Police attended and spoke to the male who was cooperative with police, possessed all the necessary hunting documents, and was following all hunting regulations. *November 14th, 5:32 p.m., Hwy 99 Hwy 17 off ramp: Complainant was driving and saw a vehicle pulled over to the shoulder with its hazard

lights on. The complainant reported that he saw a hand waving out the window but was unable to stop in time. Police attended and located the vehicle which had run out of gas. The passenger had left to get a gas can and was on the way back to the vehicle. Police stood by to provide high visibility as it was a dark and rainy night. The passenger returned with fuel and the vehicle left without further incident. *November 15th, 12:43 p.m., 4100 block 104th St: Complainant reported hearing shots and saw two males in full camouflage gear with camouflage chairs and rifles. Police attended and patrolled on foot, observing lots of pedestrian traffic using the dyke. No one else heard any noise or saw the two males described. Police spoke to staff in the area, who heard shots earlier in the morning but nothing recently.

Point Roberts a top priority for Delta MP MARK BOOTH

Point Roberts is not being overlooked or forgotten.

That’s what Delta’s MP wants her constituents to know since the border to the small peninsula community was not included in recent loosened quarantine restrictions for isolated Canada-U.S. border towns.

The border has been closed for non-essential travel since March 21, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’m really sensitive and value the relationship we have with Point Roberts. We are more than neighbours. Our communities are interwoven.

I’m very aware of the dynamics at play here. Whether it is Point Roberts’ people coming to our side to work, shop or worship, or Canadians that live there, but basically live their daily lives here,” said Carla Qualtrough, Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Disability Inclusion.

“Constituents have really reached out to me. I share their longer term concerns about the impact this is going to have on Point Roberts as a community. That’s why we are doing so much. That’s why we are monitoring it so closely. That’s why all have been so engaged as we know what’s going on

and we know what’s at stake.

Everyone has their eyes on this and we are working really hard.”

The Point Roberts’ situation is being reviewed on an on-going basis by all levels of government with Ottawa’s monthly decision being mainly steered by provincial health authorities, she said.

“I’m in regular contact with our ministers of public safety and health, with the province,” continued Qualtrough. “The Prime Minster has talked to the Premier about Point Roberts.

Our Canadian ambassador to the US has been involved.

The Governor of Washington State has been involved and of course Mayor Harvie and our local MLAs too. Literally it has been all hands on deck effort.

“We make decisions on the border based on Canadians’ health and safety. Secondly, having the support of the province and their public health authorities has really been essential. They are the experts in their region.”

That was echoed by provincial health minister Adrian Dix during an interview on Radio NL News in Kamloops last week when he was asked about the Point Roberts border.

“It is really a challenging situation because of course as you know it’s my strong view we can’t have visitor traffic back and forth from the United

States right now and that continues to be my view,” said Dix. “I know the federal government and the MP for Delta is a cabinet minister are obviously interested but it’s very difficult to create exceptions to rules at borders. If you are going to have laws and agreements they tend to apply generally.”

It was through consolidation with the provincial government quarantine restrictions were loosened for the border between Stewart, B.C. and Hyder, Alaska. Both are isolated communities, not near a major population centre like Point Roberts.

“There is no place to go there if you know those com-

munities,” continued Dix. “I think it’s unlikely in the short term we are going to see a lot of changes at Point Roberts. I know the federal government has looked at it but this is the consequence of having border measures unfortunately.”

Qualtrough added there have been some easing of the quarantine rules since March for the Point including medical travel, education and custody arrangements, yet, the pandemic’s second wave, which has resulted in record high daily numbers in B.C., means nothing is coming soon for the Canadians that would love to check on their vacation homes.

Point Roberts has not had

a single COVID-19 case since March.

Qualtrough speculated a priority system could be in place initially when the border does re-open for car traffic.

“We haven’t staked out the long term ways of how to reopen the border. It’s all too uncertain,” she added. “I think the approach will be different types of travellers. Maybe local travellers at first instead of visitors.

“Absolutely there is a world where Point Roberts is opened before other places partially because of all the things we just talked about and also how it’s landlocked and there are no cases.”

Shred-A-thon nets $4,900 for Deltassist

As many as 50 low income families in Delta will have a brighter Christmas thanks to the generosity of Delta residents who showed up in 135 vehicles for the Ladner Rotary Shred-A-Thon on Nov. 7.

Ladner Rotary will donate all of the net proceeds of $4,900 from the event to Deltassist, which organizes the annual Christmas program for 600 or more needy families.

“The extraordinary challenge of this year’s Christmas hampers program was the lack of food drives from schools throughout Delta and the small army of volunteers to pick up, sort and deliver food donations because of the COVID19 pandemic restrictions, so food gift cards will substitute this year, but that means coming up with the cash for those cards,” said Rotary Club of Ladner

president Peter Roaf.

Roaf said residents showed up at the event for confidential shredding at a lot behind Eastlink (Delta Cable) on Ladner Trunk Road. Some vehicles had just one box, others in a range up to 20 boxes, of old tax returns, credit card bills, business records, bank statements, and personal information documents.

The shredding truck, from ShredWise, took 4.5 tons of shredded paper and filled up well before the 2 p.m. scheduled end of the event.

With sponsorship from Ideal Door, based in Tilbury Industrial Park, 10 Rotary Club of Ladner members, three members of the Ladner Rotary sponsored Interact club for high school students, and two volunteers from Envision Financial, all made the fundraiser possible.

The first-time event raised an impressive $224,000 in support of Delta Hospital’s critical equipment needs including their surgical department, which has been greatly impacted by COVID-19.

The other day we celebrated my wife and my youngest grandchild’s birthdays together.

It was, of course, a COVID appropriate party with only one friend and my kids in attendance. The joy of a late fall party is that it gets dark right after supper and so, while the little ones were still awake, we had a glow stick dance party! I raided the local dollar store for a variety of glow sticks, chose a playlist that celebrated the two birthday girls and then we shut the lights out and flailed around a bit (that’s what we call dancing).

The glow sticks are benign in the light but make it dark and they become mesmerizing tubes of magic. As I think about that experience, the words of Jesus’ come to me: “You are

the light of the world” (Matthew 4:14).

As we trudge our way through COVID-19, our buildings may be quiet but there is no reason for the Church lights to be turned off. Each and every believer has the opportunity to shine brightly when the times are darkest. My prayer for my own congregation is that they would be as

mesmerizing as glow sticks to those living in darkness. Christianity is incredibly resilient because it is birthed in individual people and is fueled by God himself and not by buildings and programs. People are inevitably drawn to the light and upon inquiry discover the good news that Jesus can help them come fully alive again to God. This is a twofold encouragement.

The first is to Christfollowers: Live Jesus out loud. Somebody near you is struggling in darkness and needs your light. The second is to those experiencing darkness of some sort. If you see someone who glows with hope and peace and joy and good deeds, go ahead and ask them about the source of their light.

Children’s book was a family effort

The creation of a children’s book proved to be a family endeavour for one Tsawwassen author who has brought a dream of hers to life through the story’s pages.

Rebecca Harrison, the founder of Family Tree Books, will be releasing her newest book ‘The Little Tree’ on Friday, Nov. 20, Universal Children’s day. Her three previous publications are all collaborative books which explore familial relationships and tell the stories from those families.

Harrison wasn’t alone in making her newest publication though, her aunt lent her artistic expertise to create several watercolour illustrations to accompany Harrison’s words. Harrison’s uncle-in-law who worked as a publisher for a number of years also provided editorial feedback and her cousin in law helped with the book’s graphic design.

‘The Little Tree’ follows the

story of a young girl who discovers a battered sapling and explores the ensuing relationships between humans and nature. The idea for the story came to Harrison in her sleep when she was a girl.

“I just dreamed it one night, it was one of those very vivid dreams,” she said. “I woke up and I just knew I had to write this down... it has always been on my heart to put it out there but this was just the right time.

It’s a story of relationships.

Relationships to nature, relationships to friends, relationships with yourself really.”

Having caught the writing bug, Harrison says there are more of her books to be published in the future.

“I feel like the more I do it the more it’s all I want to do,” she said, adding she has colleagues in the film industry interested in a script she has written for the silver screen.

1040 camps raise $1,000 for Deltassist Xmas program The 140 Sports Association was busy making a difference for young softball players and Deltassist.

The non-profit organization ran a pair of clinics over the summer that focused on technical skills and the confidence it takes to step onto the field.

One camp was with the Delta Inferno 2007-08 rep team and the other was for girls who play at the house league level or are new to the sport.

The clinics generated $1,000 for Deltassist’s Christmas Toy Program that will see gift cards given to help Delta families in need during the holiday season.

“I thought it was really great to get the girls out and have fun with the skills camps while also incorporating mental toughness skills,” explained 1040 instructor Nicole Salas, who came up with the idea to also fundraise for Deltassist. “So many young athletes deal with pressures that arise from

women’s softball team. Her teammates include another 1040 staff member Olivia Malesku.

“There were confidence boosting activities such as making hair bows that were decorated with words that gave them confidence” and “because they are just starting softball, there were many new friendships created through the sport,” said Malesku.

The 1040 Sports Association was launched to teach youth that are actively involved in sport about transferable skills that can help them both on and off the field. It strives to help them build strong skill sets in emotional and mental areas of their life.

The organization is hosting “Calling the Fathers” virtual seminar this Saturday that will include 1040 founder Fred Wells and Andrew Neufeld, a registered counsellor from Alongside You. They will discuss the roles fathers play in their children’s lives.

The Delta Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society has stepped up for KidSport Delta in memory of a popular former battalion Chief.

Pete Popovich was 64 when he passed away suddenly back in August. He worked 35 years with the Delta fire department and retired as battalion Chief when he 60. He was admired by many for his outgoing personalPete Popovich ity. So much so that the DFFCS recently held a golf tournament in his honour at the Vancouver Golf Club in Coquitlam where he was a member. The event raised $5,000. Another $2,315 was generated in individual donations. All the funds were presented to the local KidSport chapter last week.

“We have helped many new families who otherwise would not have qualified due to income but since they have been out of work they have found them in a situation of needing to ask,” said Delta KidSport chair Carlene Lewall. “We really appreciate the donation as this goes a long ways to help the kids in Delta.”

Decathlete reaching new heights SDSS’s Aidan Turner breaks 22-year-old provincial pole vault record for his age group MARK BOOTH

Aidan Turner is taking his promising decathlon career to new heights and setting records along the way.

The 15-year-old South Delta Secondary student happens to thrive in the pole vault where he recently broke a 22-year-old provincial record for his age group with a leap of 4.00 metres at a meet in Abbotsford. It also has him currently ranked number one in Canada at the U18 level.

The feat was especially satisfying given it was an erratic season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in a number of cancelled events and regular training being put on hold for nearly four months.

That’s when Turner at least benefited from his mom Michaela Colluney being a high performance coach and a member of the Ocean Athletics coaching staff. He regularly trains at the South Surrey-based track and field club.

“I was lucky from that standpoint,” said Turner. “We were doing what we could for strength and conditioning and also went out to the SDSS track and did some hurdles’ work.”

“The main thing was keeping up his speed and mobility,” added Colluney. “It’s easy to pick things back up. What was missing was the technical side of the sport and meets.”

Turner was introduced to pole vaulting two years ago and enjoyed immediate success by making the standard at his first meet. He has been working with Ocean’s pole vault coach Len van

Ryswk.

“He has sprinter jumper body type and the quickness too,” he said. “Aidan also has the ability to learn new skills and that’s a big thing for decathletes.

“As a pole vault athlete you are a sprinter, long jumper, triple jumper for the first half. The second half is more gymnastics type. It takes those two attributes and also being comfortable being inverted which is something to learn at a young age. Just being mentally strong enough and being able to take the risk, being adventurous.”

Turner is fortunate the club makes its pole vault program a priority with a designated training area and investing in new equipment. He typically brings seven poles to a meet, which reflects the conditions and his steady progression as an athlete.

“Aidan has probably had three or four growth spurts since I have been coaching him,” added van Ryswk “These guys get faster and stronger very quickly and technically better and more confident.

This year he has moved through seven poles. That is the big growth spurt in technical vaulting.”

He will continue his training over the winter indoors at Trinity Western University that has graciously opened its doors to young vaulters. Pre-pandemic, he was making the trek to Bellingham and Western Washington University.

“I pretty much liked it my very first year,” said Turner. “A lot of my gym work is body weight strength.

EYRE, Percy December 18, 1926 − November 2, 2020

ACHESON, Miriam Joan April 17, 1933 − November 10, 2020 It is with heavy hearts we said goodbye to our sweet Mom as she slipped into the arms of Jesus.

Mom was predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Ralph in 2010 and by her brothers, Marvin (Devon) Green and Douglas Green. Mom is survived by her sister, Arley (Joe) Molloy; sons, Dan (Lynn) and Bob (Allison); and her daughter, Sue (Rob). Mom had so much joy from her six grandchildren and nine great−grandchildren.

Mom spent her early years growing up in Toronto and moved out west in the early ’70s where she worked as a teller in the TD Bank for many years.

Mom will be remembered by us all who have a touch of her with the many sweaters, blankets or crafts that she made and generously gave us all.

Mom had a generous giving heart and loved her family.

She would do anything for us and supported us in everything we did, even during her days with dementia.

There will be a small family gathering at a later date to remember Mom. In lieu of flowers, Mom would have liked donations to the Alzheimer Society of BC or KinVillage Association where she was loved and cared for during the last years of her life.

CHOW, Duncan Patrick January 10, 1956 − October 22, 2020

Duncan Chow passed away on October 22, 2020, at St Paul’s Hospital at the age of 64. Duncan reunited with his beloved wife, Debbie, who passed away last year. Duncan is survived by his three daughters, Emily, Laura (Conor) and Lyndsey (Bret); his dear siblings, and many loving family members and friends.

Duncan was born in Vancouver to Lily and Joseph Chow. He grew up in Vancouver and graduated from Churchill Secondary and UBC. He then joined and led the family business as his lifelong career.

He moved to Ladner to raise his family and has been a resident ever since.

Duncan was well known for his outgoing personality, kind nature and involvement in a plethora of activities like fishing, biking, slow−pitch, and hockey. He loved spending time with dear family and friends, and he had an incredible knack for planning, organizing, and hosting gatherings, all to bring loved ones together.

A Celebration of Life will be postponed for now.

SCHREIBER, Eva October 1943 - November 2020 It is with great profound sadness that the family of Eva Schreiber announce her unexpected passing on Thursday, November 12, 2020.

Eva was born October 21, 1943 in Weston, Ontario to Jean and William Winter. She was their only child.

Eva grew up in Weston and attended both public and post secondary school there. Her first employer, Kodak, was also located in Weston.

In 1966, she and Peter were married and shortly after they accepted a transfer to Alberta. Sons, Paul (Veronica and Olivia) and Kevin were both Alberta born. In 1976, shortly after Kevin’s arrival, the family moved to Tsawwassen, B.C.

Percy Eyre passed away at Ladner Hospital on November 2, 2020, at the age of 93 years. Percy was born in Cardston, Alberta on December 18, 1926. The family moved to Pincher Creek, Alberta where Percy grew up and received his education.

He moved to the Lower Mainland in 1970 where he spent the last 50 years of his life.

Percy was predeceased by his brothers, Reg, Ronald, Jack, and Walter (Buck); and sisters, Lucy and Eileen (Dolly). He will be sadly missed and forever loved by his wife, Wilhelmina (Willy); his children, Del, Gary, Susan, and Kathy; along with 10 grandchildren, eight great−grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, and numerous friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a future date yet to be determined.

Eva was a loving wife, a dedicated mother and a grandmother “extraordinaire”.

She cherished her relationship with Olivia.

As a young mother, Eva fought and won two separate battles with cancer in 1977 and 1985. She did this with the same quiet strength with which she tackled any and all problems.

Eva was a talented and capable lady who never hesitated to take on any task. Her calm, serene composure was the envy of her friends. Entertaining was a pleasure for Eva. She definitely earned her title as “Appetizer Queen”. As an active member of Beta Sigma Phi for several years, Eva had many opportunities to hone her hostess skills. After Peter’s retirement, he and Eva took many enjoyable trips to Ajijic, where they took advantage of the chance to explore much of Mexico. As well, their travels included several European adventures, highlighted by two Christmas River Cruises.

Eva will be remembered as a wonderful lady who touched the hearts of both family and friends.

She will be missed.

KONNERT, David May 31, 1948 - October 27, 2020 It is with deep sadness and much love that we mourn the loss of our father, David E. Konnert.

After one month in hospital, he returned home where he spent his final two weeks surrounded by family. It was a blessing to care for him, as he had cared for us so attentively throughout the years.

On October 27th he passed away, following complications related to acute pancreatitis.

Even in his last days, Dad’s warmth and humour were felt by all.

With a smile that lit up the room, he continued to express concern for - and encourage - his family.

His life revolved around his family and his steadfast Christian faith.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife, Terry; his children, Kim (Jody), Michael (Bethany), and Courtney (Thomas); as well as dear friends and extended family.

He is also survived by his grandsons, River and Jacob, who brought him tremendous joy.

Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Thomas Martin, for his care and compassion.

Thomas Stephen Dennison passed away peacefully on October 26, 2020, at 98 years old in the town of 100 Mile House, BC. Thomas was born August 15th, 1922 and is predeceased by his parents Thomas and Bertha Dennison and the recent passing of his wife of 71 years, Madeline May Dennison.

He is survived by their four children, Cheryl May Woodcock (Mike), Robert Stephen Dennison, Barry Thomas Dennison, and Dorian (Dori) Bruce Dennison (Val); eight grandchildren; and eleven great−grandchildren.

Thomas was close to his family and friends, growing up in Saskatchewan and raising his family in Ladner. He served in WWII with the R.C.A.F. He had a career with the Corporation of Delta for over 28 years as the "Town Planner". As well he was very involved in the community of Delta participating in Odd Fellows, Royal Canadian Legion, Delta Soccer Association and several other sports and community clubs. Madeline and Tom moved to the Cariboo in the later years to be close to family and the recreational property that they loved so much.

He loved his music, fishing, camping and being around his family and friends and will always be in our hearts. Due to the current health restrictions a private family gathering will be held to celebrate his life at a later date. The family would like to thank the care givers and hospital staff at Fischer Place, Mill Site Lodge and 100 Mile hospital for their exceptional kindness and care.

Mum loved nothing more than to go ballroom dancing at KinVillage Community Centre in Tsawwassen with Dad and spending time with her family at our many gatherings and celebrations. She was a special lady, tiny and cute. Her smile and British talks used to brighten many peoples days and she was often called “the Queen”. She will be greatly missed by her daughter, Brenda (Roger), granddaughters Allison (Claudius and son Collins), Angela (Carl) and her great granddaughters Kali and Lexy.
