Province honours good citizen

Michelle Wilson earns Medal of Good Citizenship for her transgender advocacy IAN JACQUES

Ladner’s Michelle Wilson has received a provincial honour for her outstanding service and commitment to helping others.

Wilson was among 18 people throughout B.C. who received the Medal of Good Citizenship at a ceremony in Vancouver last week.

Launched in 2015, the Medal of Good Citizenship recognizes individuals who, through exceptional long-term service, have made outstanding contributions to their communities without expectation of remuneration or reward.

The medal reflects their generosity, service, acts of selflessness and contributions to community life.

Recipients were nomi-

nated by members of their communities.

“It was quite a surprise when I was nominated by a friend of mine, who didn’t let me know until it happened,” said Wilson.

“It was really wonderful to be acknowledged and the group of people I was nominated with are outstanding. There are so many opportunities to give back and I feel what I do is very simple, just to share a story and give people an opportunity to see how easy it can be to love your kids and the impact that can have, so to be nominated for that is just incredible.”

Since her eldest child Tru came out as transgender at the age of nine, Wilson has been an advocate for transgender rights.

When Tru’s Catholic school refused to accom-

modate or support her transition, Wilson and her family filed a human rights complaint that led to the development of a policy to support gender expression.

It paved the way for other denomination-based independent schools in B.C. and across Canada to create such policies.

Since then, Wilson spends countless volunteer hours speaking at conferences and supporting other families going through their own struggles.

This year’s recipients were selected from more than 100 nominees.

“To be in the class of someone like Joe Average, who I admire and respect so much for his work with HIV/AIDS community, is amazing,” added Wilson.

One size fits all doesn’t fit for Delta.

That’s the message B.C. Liberal Leader Andrew Wilkinson conveyed during a visit to Delta last week that included a meeting with members of the farming community.

Prior to a roundtable at BC Fresh in East Ladner, Wilkinson told the Optimist that sweeping legislation passed by the Green-backed NDP government, which applies to farming communities throughout the province, may work in some areas but doesn’t make sense for others.

“We have to remember that British Columbia is a really big, diverse place and what applies to a ranch in Quesnel may not make a lot of sense for a potato farm on Westham Island, and also not make sense for a ranch in Cranbrook. These ideas of one-size fits-all rules stopped making sense a long time ago,” he said.

Joined by Delta South MLA Ian Paton, the opposition agriculture co-critic, Wilkinson had plenty to say about Bill 15, controversial legislation that has drawn the ire of farmers throughout the province.

The new rules will replace the current Agricultural Land Commission governance model and come on the heels of last fall’s Bill 52 to govern house size on farmland.

“We’re hearing more and more concerns about Bill 15 and 52 from ranchers and some of the other

producers that they’re losing some of the rights that they used to have and they’re losing control over their future,” Wilkinson said.

“We put in amendments and the NDP rejected them, along with their Green buddies, and so we are here to make sure that the ag sector, in particular

the vegetable sector, fully understands that we’re working as hard as we can on their behalf and we have to learn from them.”

Farmers who want to build a second home on the family farm for the next generation are now being told they aren’t allowed to do so, even if it’s on the same home

plate on a large farm, Paton said.

Paton also noted farmers who work part-time in the forest industry in the province are being told they can no longer park their own logging trucks on their land as well as decommission maintenance shops they may have on their farms.

Wilkinson noted that even bigger than the secondary homes issue is that the NDP has made it impossible for producers and farmers to apply to the ALC for any change of use and that those applications must now come directly from a municipality or First Nation, which means a fundamental erosion of property rights.

The Liberals have also been slamming the provincial legislation for blocking so-called valueadded side businesses and events on farms, limiting farmers’ ability to generate extra income.

Agriculture Minister Lana Popham recently told the Optimist: “Our government is working hard to expand B.C.’s agriculture industry. We are increasing access to locally grown and raised food, and helping rural communities diversify their economies and create sustainable jobs.”

It’s that time of year again.

The long-running Ladner Christmas Bird Count will take place Saturday, Dec. 21.

Open to all experienced birders as well as those just looking for an enjoyable outdoor activity during the holiday season, the count also includes areas of Tsawwassen, south Richmond and Point Roberts.

It’s part of the regional Christmas Bird Count, which is a component of a much larger count across the continent.

Counts happen in over 2,000 locations throughout the Western Hemisphere.

It’s the 120th year for the counts, an ongoing project of the National Audubon Society in the United States and coordinated in Canada by Bird Studies Canada.

Each Christmas Bird Count is conducted on a single day between Dec. 14 and Jan. 5.

Volunteers are needed to take part in the Ladner Christmas Bird Count this Saturday.

Counts are carried out within a 24-kilometre diameter circle that stays the same from year to year.

The Ladner count, which dates back to the 1950s, has a few ways people can participate. One is by joining a small team of birders as it drives or walks around its area, counting all birds that team members spot. Drivers, recorders and spotters are all needed.

Another way to participate is to stay home and count the birds that come

to your feeders or in your yard.

It once again starts at 8 a.m. at various locations.

Area leaders will call volunteers with the information once they are assigned a team.

The Ladner count is usually at or near the top of all counts in Canada. At 128 species last year, it was second to Victoria which recorded 140 species.

Innocent–looking email infects city computers Lost data recovered as IT department responds quickly to most recent cyberattack at city hall IAN JACQUES

It’s a lesson on how an innocent email can lead to a privacy breach and computer systems getting hacked.

The City of Delta recently fell victim to a cyber breach that infected several computers and temporarily lost a number of files and data.

Mayor George Harvie said the cyberattack occurred a couple of weeks ago.

“It’s not uncommon, it has happened before,” Harvie said. “Our emergency IT department was very quick to respond. All cities are subject to this now. Talking to my counterparts at the Mayor’s Council, everyone is subjected to this.”

He said a false email came in to about 50 Delta staff email addresses. He said the email seemed innocent enough as the subject line was from Canada Post.

“All these email addresses, people can get off of the Internet,” said Harvie.

“The message was from Canada Post. It looked legit. I was one of the ones who clicked on the email and it opened up a virus.

We did lose some data, but

it was all recoverable. We have back-up systems. We have an extensive firewall.

We get hit hundreds of times a day from people trying to get in to our firewall. It is the cost of doing

business these days.”

Harvie said all computers that were infected were fixed and fully operational by the next day thanks to Delta’s IT staff.

“It’s a lesson for our staff

Delta council has put the brakes on — at least for now — a proposed A&W drive-thru and adjacent storage facility development application in East Delta.

According to Delta’s director of planning Marcy Sangret, following the close of a public hearing for the project on Dec. 9, council approved a motion to postpone consideration of the application and refer it back to staff.

Sangret said council requested further clarification on traffic impacts so staff will be preparing a report. It’s anticipated the application will be considered by council sometime in early 2020.

With improvements already completed, in the works and on the drawing board, Delta Hospital is in a continual state of evolution.

“The ultimate vision, broadly speaking, is to provide as many services that makes sense in our community to our community, so that we limit the number of patients that have to travel to other sites to receive services,” said Teresa O’Callaghan, the hospital’s executive director.

“It doesn’t make sense to replicate all services for all sites, but I think there’s definitely opportunity at this site to expand the range of services that we deliver.”

O’Callaghan said the hospital’s master plan could be going through some revisions to meet the changing needs of the community and region, particularly given population growth and demographic changes.

In 2011, Fraser Health launched a planning initiative aimed at determining what services the Ladner hospital should provide as well as what building additions would be required. What came out of that a year later was a master plan containing short-term goals and longer term objectives.

In the early 2000s, there was much angst in the community when the hospital’s acute status was downgraded to sub-acute.

Fraser Health also proposed closing the ER overnight but backed off after community backlash.

Good news came years later when government announced the hospital’s sub-acute beds would to be converted back to acute medical beds.

New beds, additional staff and equipment, and an expanded ER would also come to the hospital.

According to Fraser Health, of the 34,119 patients who used the ER in 2018/2019, 69 per cent were Delta residents, while 20 per cent came from Surrey and the balance, essentially, came from Richmond, South Surrey/ White Rock and Langley.

Other recent changes for the facility include a new pre-admission clinic for surgical daycare and a new orthopedics surgical unit.

More possible changes for the hospital in the current master plan include a new mental health unit as well as adding a community health centre, although it remains to be seen if those will become a reality.

The City of Delta’s Social Action Plan identifies a number of services that are lacking, including mental health support. According to Fraser Health, the hospital last

year supported 1,762 mental health and substance abuse clients.

Two of the major stakeholders that will be part of the development of any new future plan will be the foundation and the auxiliary.

The foundation raises big dollars each year through donations and special events, such as the annual Moonlight Gala, which raised over $588,000 this year.

“The reality is that government funding cannot alone provided the necessary funds required to constantly update rapid advances in medical technology, equipment, and facilities,” the foundation states.

Meanwhile, the auxiliary, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, has long been an integral part of fundraising efforts, raising millions for equipment as well other items to improve the comfort and care of patients.

Noting they’ve raised over $800,000 for equipment this year, Delta Hospital Auxiliary president David Dee said he “wouldn’t know where to begin” when it comes to a potential wish list of what he’d like to see added to the facility.

Whatever changes are made, the auxiliary, which committed $2.4 million toward the new imaging wing, will be there to support the hospital, he added.

Hospice faces ‘consequences’ if it refuses to offer MAiD: Dix SANDOR GYARMATI

The Delta Hospice Society could face “consequences” for not providing medically assisted deaths, according to the province’s health minister.

During a recent media briefing, Adrian Dix commented on the decision by the society’s new board to not allow Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner.

Noting medically assisted deaths have been legal in Canada since 2016, Dix

pointed out “almost all” of Delta Hospice’s costs are paid for by Fraser Health and by the public.

“Delta Hospice can decide it doesn’t want to continue to receive support from the Fraser Health Authority in its mission,” he said. “They can choose to do that...

But, of course, you can’t have it both ways.”

A Fraser Health spokesperson last week told the Optimist health region representatives met with the leadership from hospice to discuss concerns.

Fraser Health provides about $1.3 million in

annual funding to the hospice society, which accounts for roughly half of its operating budget.

The Delta Hospice Society board has since responded to the health authority, which said it’s reviewing the response and will have more to share soon.

A heated annual general meeting in late November saw the election of several new board members, most opposed to MAiD. In a 5-3 vote a couple of days later, the new board reversed a vote taken a week prior by the previous board to allow MAiD.

Two directors resign from hospice board

The Delta Hospice Society is facing more turmoil as two directors abruptly resigned last week.

In a statement to the Optimist, Randy Scott, who joined the board at last month’s AGM, and Melissa Granum said they’re leaving the board due to its position on not permitting Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner.

“It is with regret that we make this decision, as we have the utmost respect for the (Delta) Hospice staff and volunteers who provide exceptional care to those who choose Irene Thomas Hospice for their end-of-life journey, and for the families who turn to Delta Hospice for support during and after the passing of a loved one,” they said in their joint statement.

“We feel that the major-

ity of the newly elected DHS board of directors have a fundamentally different philosophy regarding end-of-life care than the community the hospice is meant to serve. As a result, we are unable to effectively serve as board members.”

he showdown was inevitable so I can only assume they’ve got a plan.

For three years now Fraser Health has been biding its time, waiting patiently for the Delta Hospice Society to get with the program and begin offering Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) at the Irene Thomas Hospice in Ladner. The health region got what it wanted last month when, a week before Delta Hospice’s annual general meeting, the board approved MAiD, a decision that was quickly reversed by a new group of board members elected at the aforementioned AGM. Repealing the decision sent a clear signal to Fraser Health that the new leadership at Delta Hospice wasn’t interested in providing MAiD, which prompted the health region to equally as quickly give the local non-profit a formal notice of its concerns. Health Minister Adrian Dix has also weighed in, saying there would be consequences should Delta Hospice not get on board, inferring that the more than $1 million in annual funding from Fraser Health would disappear.

None of this comes as a surprise and has brought us to a predictable fork in the road, one that those who oppose MAiD being offered at Delta Hospice knew they would reach. The milliondollar question, quite literally, is what’s their next move?

If they stand firm and Fraser Health plays its funding card, the non-profit would find itself staring at a massive hole in its budget. Does it look for other revenue streams? Perhaps a wealthy benefactor who holds similar values?

What about scaling back services?

There aren’t any easy answers, a situation that’s further complicated by the fact the society’s position on MAiD is at odds with public sentiment. It would be difficult to fundraise for a cause when a significant portion of the population has taken up residence on the other side.

The hospice society has every right to take the position it has, but, as Dix said, that stance comes with consequences, ones that were well known, so it would stand to reason there’s a contingency plan in place. At least you hope so.

The new board president has been tough to track down so it’s difficult to know their next move, but it looks like they’ll be required to play it in the very near future.

The best gift to give yourself, and not feel guilty about it

ere we are, less than a week from Christmas, and like most people, I still have shopping to do. How boring Christmas would be if I had everything organized.

Starting around mid-November, anything I buy that’s nonperishable gets wrapped and put under the tree. I think I have some shampoo and a package of printer paper under there. That’s where my surprises come from on Christmas morning, getting all the stuff I forgot I bought myself.

My kids are older now, so there’s no late-night toy assembly required. My biggest miscalculation was the barbecue my sisters and I bought for my parents one year. Almost didn’t get any sleep that night.

For all the gifts I receive at Christmas, one I enjoy most doesn’t show up under the tree, and lasts for more than a day.

One gift I cherish is one I give myself. The gift of gratitude.

For all the appliances, tools, toys (OK, more tools) and other things we accumulate at Christmas (many of which never get used and end up on Varage Sale), giving to someone else, especially someone I may never know, is what makes this time of year special.

like holding a door for someone who would struggle otherwise.

Maybe it’s letting someone merge in traffic, even if it isn’t their turn, and I get a “thank you” wave.

I try and volunteer for different things throughout the year, like the Tour de Delta. I don’t know any cyclists, see a few spectators I know, but for the most part it’s just so that we can have a great event take place in Delta, even if it is a little expensive (I think it’s worth it).

I donate to the Toy Depot, so a parent can give their child something under the tree at Christmas.

As I’ve said before, it’s not the gift that matters to a child. For that one day, they get to be like their friends at Christmas, able to share what they got under the tree like the other kids, instead of having to say Santa missed them, again.

And it gives the parents one day they can feel like they aren’t letting their child down, when so many other times in life the answer has to be “no, we can’t.”

For the past four years, I had the honour of being president of the Deltassist board of directors.

I’ve heard the stories of people truly in need, of people who feel they have nowhere to turn, and of how Deltassist staff help them.

I played a small part in supporting the agency, but one I am very proud of. I stepped down this year to let someone else lead the board, but stayed on as a director to continue lending a hand.

It seems the more I help others, the happier, and luckier, I get.

When your day starts off being grateful for a loving family, to live in such a safe, caring community, the things that do go wrong in life are dwarfed by the good things that happen.

Gratitude is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. No wrapping required.

Tall buildings not the answer in Tsawwassen’s town core

Editor: Re: Here’s a perfect opportunity to keep the town core alive, letter to the editor, Dec. 12 I am in opposition to the concept of high buildings in the Tsawwassen town centre as it isn’t the right answer to keep the business centre alive and well.

The letter suggested this would be the perfect scenario for this community as it has done so much for areas in Vancouver, but what isn’t known or said here, is that many Vancouver residents are extremely opposed to this type of redevelopment.

Why do we think more or bigger is better? Traffic is already clogging up 56th Street. There are many nice communities that thrive because they are unique and quaint. Look

at places like Qualicum.

I understand the value of land and more square footage of building means more money for the developer. You cannot build in the Lower Mainland cheap enough to allow a matching value to current incomes unless subsidized by government.

Tsawwassen is a desirable place to live and mainly because it is a different community than the rest of the Lower Mainland.

It should remain different than Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond and others.

Yes, many want more diversity in housing choices, but new units built here will not be cheap.

Tsawwassen Springs is a prime example.

Buildings three to four

storeys maximum with retail or service-type occupancies at ground level is ample and will not diminish the views of the North Shore mountains.

Small retail businesses are under threat due to the mall development on Tsawwassen First Nation land. They cannot all compete with the big box stores and online shopping, which is expanding rapidly. A transformation into more service-type occupancies will likely prevail.

We need to think clearly about how our community should be developed.

We have a beautiful, family-oriented, safe community. Let’s be very selective in how we move forward in order to preserve this environment.

Delta should preserve a piece of its history

Editor: Re: Province could finally be putting century-old home up for sale, Dec. 12 While it’s nice to see the property my family lived in for 40 years being considered for sale, I wanted to strongly suggest a plan for its future.

This two-acre property is already designated a heritage residence, so it’s ready to be purchased and improved by the City of Delta.

This property could serve as a meeting place for different groups, as a historical education space, for weddings as well as location for TV/movie shoots.

I have to also state the most important feature of this property is the over 100-year-old weeping elm (Camperdown) tree that sits at the front of the house.

This tree is an extremely rare species. They are only created by man (grafting two separate trees), and

Vote to become city hasn’t accomplished much

Editor: I would like to put forward a couple of observations.

1. A couple of years ago we had a very contrived vote as to whether Delta should change from a corporation to a city. This was done, in part, because a civic delegation to Europe had been mistaken for a private business. So, after this expensive change, can anyone show me what

we’ve got out of this initiative? My thought is it was done to satisfy the ego of a mayor who wanted to be head of a city and not an old-fashioned corporation.

2. I drive for Deltassist (great service) and the most common complaint I hear is the lack of GPs. We are now looking at adding an extra 2,000 residents at Southlands and if some people have their way, an extra 2,000 at a proposal

to turn Tsawwassen into a mini Richmond.

I hear people say build it and they will come.

Well, change the “will” to “might” and you have the story. Like it or not, Tsawwassen is very much a seniors’ town and as we are living longer, this matter will only get worse.

Let’s get the basics right before we start this population explosion.

Driver stated he consumed two beers in the last 10 minutes. Approved screening device demand read “fail” and a 90-day driving ban was served.

• Dec. 10, 1 a.m., 5800-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police were

conducting a roadblock when a driver appeared to have consumed alcohol.

Approved screening device demand resulted in “fail” twice. Driver was served a 90-day immediate roadside prohibition, a 30-day vehicle impoundment and a ticket for driving contrary to Class 7 restrictions.

• Dec. 10, 11:12 a.m., 5000-block of 44th Avenue: Complainant reported graffiti had occurred overnight on an outdoor wall. The graffiti was done primarily in blue spray paint with several different tags.

• Dec. 11, 1:28 p.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Employee reported a male had stolen four bottles of Grey Goose vodka and fled in a vehicle. Value of the liquor: $271.

TSAWWASSEN

• Dec. 8, 8:50 a.m., 1500-block of 54th Street: Complainant reported his secured vehicle had been stolen from his driveway overnight. Large amounts of items were inside the truck at the time, includ-

ing chain saw, tire chains, dog kennels, GPS, hunting clothes, rangefinder and binoculars for a total approximate value of $4,025. Value of the vehicle is $40,000. Spare set of keys was in the glove box.

Vehicle has since been recovered.

• Dec. 8, 2:54 p.m., 5000block of Canoe Pass Way: An employee reported a male youth stole a shirt from the business by concealing it in his bag. The male was accompanied by four or five other male youths. Police conducted area patrols and located four males in the food court area. One youth admitted to taking the item and the shirt was subsequently recovered from a vehicle. Total value was $199. All youths now barred for one year.

• Dec. 8, 4:03 p.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported an unknown man had entered the business and taken two bottles of Grey Goose vodka without offering payment. Total value of loss: $157.

• Dec. 9, 3:49 p.m., 500block of Connaught Drive:

Complainant reported fraudulent banking activity with his accounts. An unknown person had transferred $1,500 from his business credit card to his personal account. The suspect then e-transferred $1,950 from complainant’s personal account to an email address.

Complainant notified banking institution which cancelled the e-transfer and advised it would conduct its own investigation. No personal funds lost and suspect email not known to him. All current bank cards cancelled and police advised to have his personal devices/email checked for viruses and mal-ware.

• Dec. 9, 4:01 p.m., 5500block of 16th Avenue: A report was received that an unknown person broke the passenger side mirror off his vehicle while it was parked on the street. Complainant also believes the vehicle was entered and an unknown amount of change was taken, however he reported no signs of forced entry. Damage to mirror: about $300.

A-list cast filming series in Ladner

A star-studded cast was in Ladner this week to film an apocalyptic thriller.

Filming for the ninehour CBS TV series based on Stephen King’s The Stand is taking place at a house on 44A Avenue, a structure built by the production company to be the home of one of the main characters.

Filmed throughout the Lower Mainland, and using the working title Radio Nowhere, the story

follows survivors of a government-engineered flu virus that wipes out 99 per cent of the world’s population.

The series stars James Marsden, Whoopi Goldberg, Amber Heard, Alexander Skarsgard, Greg Kinnear and shock rocker Marilyn Manson.

The city recently rejected a request by the production company to close Highway 17A for filming.

The series is to air in March 2020.

Students attending Delta elementary and high schools will soon be able to get free menstrual products in washrooms.

The Delta board of education last week got an update from staff that dispensing machines will be installed by the end of this year.

Delta elementary schools with less than 450 students are getting one dispenser each, while those with more students will get two.

Secondary schools will get between three and six dispensers depending on their enrollment. South Delta Secondary, Delta Secondary and Seaquam will get the maximum.

As per Ministry of

Education requirements, at least one dispenser in every school must be available in a non-gender specific washroom.

The province, which is providing start-up funding, earlier this year announced public schools will be required to provide free menstrual products for students.

In issuing the order, Education Minister Rob

Fleming said it’s time to normalize and equalize access to menstrual products in schools, helping to create a better learning environment for students.

“Students should never have to miss school, extracurricular, sports or social activities because they can’t afford or don’t have access to menstrual products,” said Fleming at the announcement.

Store Manager Christian Exley Bakery owner/ operator Jackson Lee has been in business at their Tsawwassen Commons location at 4949 Canoe Pass Way since June 2018.

He said business has been good and steadily improving.

“Having Kin’s Farm Market and Clancy’s Meat Co open up next door has really helped to increase our traffic,” added manager Christian Exley.

Cobs has a mission to develop strong connections with customers, so they can ignite and share the same passion for the fresh baked bread and treats we all love so much.

Christmas is a great time of the year to explore all the products that Cobs has to offer.

“Whatever they need this holiday season whether that is French baguettes, dinner rolls,

anything they need Christmas morning or for Christmas dinner we have,” said Jackson. “We also have all of our sweet treats too from tarts and cinnamon rolls to scones.”

Jackson said every product is made from scratch every morning. At the end of each day, leftover bakes goods are donated to local charities.

“Nothing goes to waste,” added Exley. “We are looking for a charitable group to support for Fridays, so if there is someone that needs the help we encourage them to contact us.”

The Delta Firefighters Charitable Society is giving back in a big way this holiday season.

During the past few weeks, the society has been donating funds from its successful Harvest Festival in September in an initiative called the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society Five Days of Giving.

Five organizations in Delta are the beneficiaries of the goodwill, including Reach Child & Youth Development Society ($25,000), Delta Hospice Society for its Blue Skies Project in support of children and youth dealing with the loss of a loved one and youth bereavement programing ($20,000), Deltassist for its community Christmas

programs ($10,000), BC & Alberta Guide Dogs to help train autism support dogs ($10,000) and Pony Pals Therapeutic Riding Association to support five children for a one-year therapy riding program ($12,000).

Society president John Burr and vice president Kristy Storey said the decision was made earlier this year that all the money from this year’s Harvest Fest would be directed to support organizations that help children and their families in Delta.

“We fundraise local and we want to support local,” said Storey. “We want to support local families and local youth.”

Burr said supporting local has been the mandate of the society since its inception in 1994. To date more than $12.5 million has been raised and

donated back to the community.

“There are others. We donate to the Burn Fund, Variety, we do outside of Delta, but I would say we donate about 90 per cent within Delta,” said Burr.

“We also do a lot of other community initiatives where needed as well.”

Storey said the society wouldn’t be able to make the donations without the support of the community.

“All of Delta provides us with a lot of support.

Harvest Festival is our biggest event of the year and to be able to give like this is truly special,” Storey said.

There are 190 members of the Delta Fire Department involved with the charitable society, including 12 members who sit on a board of directors to oversee the charitable efforts.

Four dancers in holiday classic

Four dancers from South Delta are part of a talented cast set to take the stage this weekend in Vancouver in a Christmas holiday classic.

Briella Graham, Juliette Smith, Mabel Lundie and Hannah Searcy will be on stage Dec. 20 to 22 at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre for Goh Ballet’s annual performance of The Nutcracker.

The Nutcracker features local and international dancers from the National Ballet of Canada, the Bavarian State Ballet and National Ballet of China.

Smith and Lundie are regular students at Goh, while Graham and Searcy dance at Deas Island Dance in Ladner.

“The magic of The Nutcracker is one that many families cherish.

It is an artistic tradition that transcends ballet and where people come together as a community to celebrate and appreciate the arts,” said Chan Hon Goh, director of Goh Ballet and executive producer of The Nutcracker.

“This year, we are pleased to host a cast of incredible artists from around the world. It is a privilege to unite with passionate international artists to create the undeniable enchantment that is The Nutcracker.”

Smith, who has danced in The Nutcracker for seven years, this year in the role of Clara, said every year it gets better and more special.

practicing the steps and combinations since the beginning of September and have also been watching as many versions of The Nutcracker as possible to help me develop my role as Clara,” she said. “I feel absolutely over the moon with excitement to be performing alongside principal dancers from prestigious professional companies and anxious to do a good job.”

Lundie will perform in the roles of Snowflake, Marzipan and Coffee.

“Stepping out onto the Queen Elizabeth stage is a feeling words can-

not describe, knowing all the hard work and hours of dedication through months of training is finally here,” she said. “This is my fourth Nutcracker with the Goh Ballet and it’s still such a special feeling when the curtain goes up.

I am so honored to be part of this wonderful ballet during the festive season.”

Searcy, who is in the role of a Party Girl, said it’s a dream come true to dance in the production.

“I was three years old the first time I went to see the Goh Ballet’s The Nutcracker and I loved it so much that I knew

I wanted to be in it one day,” recalled Searcy. “This is my second year dancing in it and I’m so happy to be chosen as a party girl this year. It’s such a fun role because I get to dance and act. I have been rehearsing since the beginning of September and it’s a lot of work, but I love it because I get to make a lot of friends and learn so much.”

Graham, who is in the role of Little Lamb, will be performing in The Nutcracker for the first time.

“Never in my wildest dreams would I ever

have imagined I would be dancing in this production,” said Graham. “I have been training with some outstanding dance teachers at the Goh Ballet who have been guiding me in my role as Little Lamb and I have spent many hours rehearsing as well as practicing at home. I can’t wait to perform my role as a Little Lamb on the big stage.”

Author brings bananas for elephants

The Bucks for Bananas campaign has been a huge success.

The idea of Tsawwassen author Carolyn Drew, the fundraising and awareness campaign was launcheded to coincide with her children’s Roxi book series.

from a trip to Thailand where they visited several elephant sanctuaries.

“Our goal was to raise enough money for a ton of bananas, and we raised enough for four tons for the elephants. We delivered in person to Save Elephant Foundation at Elephant Nature Park in

After months of anticipation by tens of thousands of teams worldwide, Supernatural actor Misha Collins made a surprise announcement of the winners of the 2019 Greatest International Scavenger Hunt (GISH) on Dec. 3 at the Vancouver Art Gallery.

Team Brown (Trench) Coats, made up of family and friends and based in Tsawwassen, was announced as this year’s winners, but not without some pre-announcement drama.

The team was told to come to the art gallery lobby with specific items — clothespins, an inflatable beach ball and a banana. One member had to wear a tinfoil hat. Once there, they would receive instructions for one last task. Hints were given that they were runners up and would have to compete in a final challenge.

The team took this challenge just as seriously as it took all of the 223 tasks it completed dur-

ing GISH week.

Team members showed up with cars full of items they might need to win, including a banana costume, a Stormtrooper outfit, two projectors and a sewing machine.

Burrows calls book a self-empowerment tool

Mary Ann Burrows, a local artist and founder of Artists in the Village Society, has written and illustrated a children’s book.

Oh, Monkey is an introduction to the concept of our inner critic. The story follows the journey of a young girl who grows tired of hearing her monkey chatter in her ear every day, telling her what to do.

She sits down and has a chat with her monkey and explains this really isn’t working for her. She lays down some ground rules and explains to her monkey that if she wants to hang around with her, she will need to abide. They create a new way of working together and a new story that helps the girl overcome her fears and try new things in life, with her monkey at her side.

Burrows said Oh, Monkey is the ideal selfempowerment tool for young adults, offering insight and ideas on how to train your monkey with love and understanding.

“We all have a ‘monkey’. He is the protective voice inside of us that tells us that we aren’t good enough, smart enough, fast enough, etc,” said Burrows. “In an effort to protect us from getting hurt, he will often say anything to keep us from trying new things. If we listen to him or her, our monkey can also affect our behaviour and selfconfidence and causes us to over-think things and head down the rabbit hole.

Her next book, Gator on My Back, will be out in the spring of 2020. It’s about depression, sadness and self-empowerment. A percentage of the proceeds from the book will be donated to the Canadian Mental Health Society.

Born and raised in Chilliwack, Burrows and her husband have lived in East Ladner for more than 25 years.

Tour de Delta

Volunteer Committee Member Needed Tour de Delta is an international cycling event that is comprised of three days of races, open to professional and amateur cyclists, kids races and community festivals. The event takes place July 10 - 12, 2020 in all three of Delta’s Communities.

The Tour de Delta Event Organizing Committee is seeking a volunteer for the position of:

The role of this position is to find community host housing for Tour de Delta racers and work closely with other BC Superweek Cycling Series Host Housing Coordinators.

The Tour de Delta Event Organizing Committee meets on the first Wednesday morning of each month.

Cowell Foundation donates $335,000 to buy equipment for Delta Hospital The Cowell Foundation recently made a generous first-time gift of $335,000 towards two critical pieces of equipment for Delta Hospital.

The donation will be used to purchase a new Sentry Vision System and a new Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) Unit.

The Sentry Vision System is used by the hospital’s surgical services department for cataract surgery. Delta Hospital has performed over 950 cataract surgeries this year and the current vision system has reached its end of life. The new system will provide the latest technology for surgeons and the best in patient care and comfort.

The UVGI device provides an additional layer of infection control for hospitals on top of standard cleaning procedures.

Delta Hospital will be the first site in Fraser Health to own and operate a device of this kind.

further disinfect surface areas. This kills harmful bacteria and viruses that can spread quickly throughout a hospital to put vulnerable patients at risk of illness or infection.

The family-owned and operated Cowell Auto Group has been doing business in the Lower Mainland since 1967, and The Cowell Foundation,

created and funded by the Cowell family, is a supporter of many local causes.

“We are humbled to have received this incredibly generous gift from The Cowell Foundation,” says Lisa Hoglund, executive director of the Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “Delta has one of the fastest

growing senior populations in Fraser Health and it is critical that our medical staff have the most state-of-the-art equipment to ensure the very best patient care.

“We could not do this without the generosity of donors, and we feel very fortunate The Cowell Foundation has chosen to support Delta Hospital.”

Restaurants raise $7,600 for pancreatic cancer

Five South Delta restaurants raised more than $7,600 for pancreatic cancer research during a week-long fundraiser last month.

“We have all been touched by cancer in one way or another. It was very meaningful to join with restaurants in our community to raise awareness and funds for such an important cause,” said Steve

Krawchuk, owner of the McDonald’s restaurants in Ladner and Tsawwassen.

neuroendocrine cancer last year, spearheaded the initiative to help change the outcome for others facing the disease.

“This fundraiser is important to me because it is a way to honour Thomas by raising funds and creating awareness for pancreatic cancer research and care,” Haydon said last month.

Funds raised will support pancreatic neuroendocrine cancer research taking place at BC Cancer, helping to provide new hope to British Columbians who will be

diagnosed with the disease.

Although it is the 10th most common cancer in Canada, pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of cancer death. It is difficult to detect at an early stage and often resistant to treatment.

“We’re so proud to partner with the South Delta community to change pancreatic cancer outcomes,” said Sarah Roth, president and CEO, BC Cancer Foundation. “We are tremendously grateful to each local restaurant involved.”

The Delta Ice Hawks will enter the stretch run of the Pacific Junior Hockey League regular season fighting for their playoff lives.

The Hawks closed out their pre-Christmas schedule with a lacklustre 5-2 defeat to the Mission City Outlaws on Tuesday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The result leaves them with a 14-13-3-2 record and in fifth place in the Tom Shaw Conference. A CFL-type crossover rule could give them the final post-season berth in the Harold Brittain Conference but that is hardly a guarantee with Aldergrove five points back and enjoying three games in hand.

The Hawks have 12 games remaining and that number will quickly be down to eight after a hectic stretch to start 2020 — playing four times in six days.

It looked as if they might have turned the corner after posting back-to-back victories including a 2-1 thriller at second place Grandview on Sunday night thanks to the brilliant play of goaltender Jordy Engleson.

Instead, they reverted back to the form that had produced nine losses in their last 12 games and may have their season over by early February if it continues.

Delta was dominated through 40 minutes by the Outlaws with the 4-1 score actually flattering the hosts.

“It’s hard to explain it. I kind of felt our vibe was: we didn’t play great in Grandview on Sunday but to go in there and get a win was something to get some momentum from,” said Ice Hawks GM and head coach Steve Robinson.

“I felt like we would have good energy from it and Mission would be a hands full kind of an opponent but at the same token I totally expected us to win. For us to be as flat as we were, just turning over pucks and just kind of being the second most engaged team on the ice. Under these circumstances, you wouldn’t have expected it to happen. It’s super disappointing for sure.”

Robinson and his coaching staff are also learning they need to be careful with what at times can be a fragile group dealing with adversity.

“In the first period, I was getting infuriated watching the play and I knew I just had to park it because I would be bringing negatively to the bench,” continued Robinson. “I can feel guys getting tighter which will only make it worse and get us further away from our game.

At the same time it’s hard to say ‘good job’ too when you are watching them play like that.”

The hope is the two-week holiday break will provide the opportunity to re-set for the task at hand. Robinson believes it will take in the neighbourhood of 20 points in the final dozen games to safely advance to the post-season.

The team, however, is now in the precarious position of playing well and not being rewarded in the standings thanks to a league that does have a lot of parity. There is just no more room for performances like Tuesday night.

“We can’t control what other teams do. We just have to take care of business ourselves.

The danger would be assuming we could just play .500 hockey and mosey into that crossover spot. I haven’t heard anybody talk about it but you can understand not wanting to catch White Rock for fourth (and face powerhouse North Vancouver in the opening round),” added Robinson. “But to me that is a dangerous game to play.

“Coming off that rough patch it would have been nice to win the last three but it is what it is and we can’t change it. We need to use the time of separation to re-set our minds and take a few days off. We will practice three times before Winter Classic. It will be like a minitraining camp and with us trying to come out positively.”

Leo Li’s goal with just five seconds remaining lifted the Hawks past Grandview. Engelson made 32 saves with the hosts enjoying a 38-20 advantage in the shot department.

Delta will face Grandview on Saturday, Jan. 4 (4 p.m.) at the PJHL Winter Classic in Richmond then take on Langley (10 a.m.) on the Sunday.

BC Thunder rolling into the holiday break MARK BOOTH

The BC Thunder are rolling into the holiday break.

The Thunder proved to 7-5-0 in National Ringette League play by sweeping three games from the Manitoba Intact on the weekend — capped by an 8-4 triumph at Minoru Arenas in Richmond on Sunday. The franchise represents the top open age ringette talent in BC and beyond with players ranging from 43-year-old Finnish native Petra Ojaranta to 18-year-old Kailey Magrath from Vancouver.

The team plays exclusively against out-of-province competition and is part of the NRL Western Division with two Edmonton-based teams, one from Calgary and Manitoba. The regular season schedule typically features a series of games played over a couple of days.

The top two teams earn automatic berths to the eightteam NRL Championships while the third and fourth finishers play a mini-series for the final spot. That’s where the Thunder came up short a year ago, falling to the Intact on home ice.

The team does have a distinctive Delta flavour with Emma Paradis and veteran Brandy Moleschi (Lietz).

Head coach Troy Takasaki is a DSS grad who enjoyed plenty of success with Richmond Ringette — capped by a U19 Western Canada championship in 2018 that led to him taking over the Thunder’s coaching reigns.

The sweep of the Intact has created a healthy cushion for third place over the Intact and Edmonton’s Black and Gold Rush that both sit at 1-9-0. A second place finish is hardly out of reach with the Edmonton WAM! at 8-3-0 and slated to be in Richmond for a pivotal four-game series Jan. 11-12. The teams split a pair of earlier meetings in the Alberta capital back in October.

“Against two Edmonton teams we went there for a four-game series and split them. We were in a big disadvantage where we are playing four games and those

teams are playing just two,” said Takasaki. “For us to take two there was pretty awesome.

“And this (Manitoba) team is the one to beat us in the playoffs last year so it’s nice to get the three-game sweep.”

The Thunder did drop all three games on the road to the division leading Calgary RATH but hung tough with the defending NRL champions in two of them. The finale was a 3-2 loss with the game winner coming in the dying seconds after Calgary had blasted BC 13-0 in game two.

“The second game was one of those ones you wish you could just write-off because we just didn’t play our game. But it shows the resiliency of our team to come back right away and almost tie them,” added Takasaki.

“Overall the girls are working hard and it’s looking good for ringette in BC. I definitely knew it was a challenge when I stepped into this. I’m putting a lot of time into it but I enjoy it too. It’s one of those things where it a lot of fun and the girls are working hard and want to be here.

Thormeyer named Canada’s top male swimmer JIM MORRIS

The progression continues for Markus Thormeyer.

The South Delta Secondary graduate and Winskill Doplhins alumni took another step along his career path in 2019, reaching the final of the 200-metre backstroke at the FINA World Championships in Gwangju, South Korea, and setting a Canadian record.

This follows on the heels of Thormeyer winning his first medal at a major international competition when he was third in the 100-m back at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

His performances have resulted in Swimming Canada naming Thormeyer the Male Swimmer of the Year for 2019. It’s the second consecutive year the 22-yearold has won the award.

“I think it’s pretty cool to see that happen,” said Thormeyer, who trains at the High Performance Centre – Vancouver with coach Tom Johnson.

“Last year I built up some momentum in my swimming career. This year I was able to keep that momentum going. I just kept on doing what I did last year.”

Swimming Canada High Performance Director John Atkinson said Thormeyer has followed a steady upward curve since 2015 when he made his first senior team for the Pan Am Games in Toronto.

“This year again another step forward and showing what his capabilities are,” said Atkinson. “I think there’s much more to come from Markus as he continues to develop over the next few years.”

Thormeyer attributes

some of his success to a decision he made last year to better balance his life between swimming, school and friends.

“Last year I made some good changes to get a better focus in the water and better communication with my coach about what I need,” he said. “This year I continued that and refined it.

“It’s kind of like I figured out what I needed to do.

The balance between life outside the pool is really helpful as well. I had goals that I didn’t accomplish last year (but) I’m not beating myself up over it. I took everything from last year and I’m (looking) toward this year.”

At the 2019 Canadian Trials Thormeyer became the first male swimmer to win the 100-m and 200-m backstroke plus the 100-m and 200-m freestyle. He broke the Canadian record in the 100-m back and swam personal best times in the 200-m backstroke and the 200-m freestyle.

At the world championships Thormeyer followed a twisting road to the 200-m backstroke final.

Thormeyer had originally failed to qualify for the semifinal after finishing 17th in the heats. He was back at the athletes’ village when he received a text telling him to get back to the pool because China’s Xu Jiayu had scratched.

Despite the short notice Thormeyer swam 1:56.96 in the semifinal, breaking the previous Canadian record of 1:57.34 set in 2009 by Matt Hawes. He finished eighth in the final.

“It was kind of random how it all happened,” said Thormeyer. “In that situation I was given an opportunity and I realized I had to move on that opportunity and capitalize on that.

“I hadn’t made a final

that meet yet. It was another chance. I took it and it worked.”

Being able to respond to the late scratch showed Thormeyer’s ability to focus despite adversity.

“I guess that comes down to professionalism and already having a set routine so that when I’m in that situation I know exactly what to do and I’m not freaking out,” he said.

Thormeyer recently won the 100-m backstroke

at the U.S. Open swimming competition. He is already looking forward to 2020 and hopes to compete in his second Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“I have a lot of goals,” he said. “For me to achieve my goals I want to swim fast.

“My goal isn’t to make the Olympics, it’s to swim fast. If I achieve my goals I will probably go to the Olympics and do well there.”

On Monday, December 9, 2019, at 69 years young, Wayne passed away peacefully in Vernon Hospice House in the arms of his beloved wife and best friend, Margaret with his children, brothers and sister-in-law by his side. Wayne was born in Vancouver and grew up in South Burnaby.

He played the bagpipes in the White Spot Children’s Band and 12 years in the Vancouver Police Pipe Band. He was a member of the Vancouver Police Force for 10 years and played the pipes officially for the last time as the Lone Piper at a Terry Fox Memorial Ceremony in Robson Square in 1982. In November of 1982 Wayne, Margaret and their family moved to Vernon, BC where they raised their children and had 37 years of a wonderful life.

Wayne immediately joined the Vernon Golf & Country Club where he played the game he loved and MC’d many a men’s night and social event.

He became an auctioneer, the voice of the horse races at the Vernon Race Track and the Vernon Lakers (Vipers) Hockey games. He was the Christmas Eve Santa Claus at Silver Star Mountain Resort and MC’d or auctioned at many charity events throughout the Valley, earning him a Paul Harris Fellowship from Rotary International. Wayne truly loved people from all walks of life. He put his positive attitude, ability to observe, ask questions and listen together and discovered a passion for automobile sales.

He loved all aspects of the industry. His colleagues and customers were truly his friends, so much so that he saw no need to retire.

He was immensely proud of his children who will continue with his commitment to family and community. Wayne was predeceased by his Mother, Eileen and his Father John Q Penner. He is survived by his wife Margaret of 46 years, son Brock (Melanie) and his daughter Carmen (Kyle) Point, his beloved grandchildren; Jackson, Leah, Sophie and Amy, brothers Jim (Elaine) and Grant (Margaret), nieces and nephews, goddaughter Kim and special family; Tracey (Jay), Alexa, Taylor, Cassidy and Georgia Wayne. His many friends and colleagues are also an important legacy. The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful care that Wayne received, from the Vernon Cancer Centre; particularly; Doctors Hardy, Rankin and Blyth, Nurses Maddy, Stacy, Mary Beth, Lorrie and Lorne, and the incredibly caring GP team of Lindsay and Jeff Kwantes. In respect of Christmas, the family has decided to delay a Celebration of Wayne’s Life to his favorite month in Vernon (March). There will be a notification at that time. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to contribute to the VJH McMurtryBaerg Cancer Centre, North Okanagan Hospice Society or Canadian Cancer Society.

INFORMATION WANTED Witnesses Needed − HIT & RUN Friday, November 15th ~ 5 pm Witnesses are needed to a hit and run collision that occurred on Friday, November 15, 2019, at approximately 5:15 pm on Highway 17, near the Highway 91 connector. An eastbound white BMW X5 was stopped in heavy highway traffic when a large dump truck in front of the BMW began reversing and crashed into and backed up ONTO the BMW. The dump truck then fled the scene.
