Another “Hell Night” in South Delta has come and gone with both the City of Delta and Delta School District left to tabulate the damage.

Hell Night has become an annual alcohol-fueled rite-of-passage that sees some South Delta teens spend the first night of the new school year partying throughout the community which often times results in acts of vandalism.

Delta police spokesperson Kristy Neville said police officers dealt with what she described as run-of-the-mill vandalism throughout the night on Sept. 3 and into the morning of Sept. 4.

“Trash bins and recycling bins knocked over, trash bins knocked over,” she said. “Our stance is that Delta police appreciate there is a tradition that surrounds Hell Night, but we do not condone any of the actions. There is some surveillance footage that we are going through and we will be looking into some of the more serious vandalism.”

According to the City of Delta, three city sites were hit with significant vandalism: Pebble Hill Park,

The school district saw significant vandalism at Hawthorne, Holly, Annieville and McCloskey elementary schools as well as Delta Secondary.

Estimated damage is approximately $3,000.

Assistant superintendents Brad Bauman and Nancy Gordon said the school district does not condone the event or the behaviour of the students

who participate.

“The message is… this is not a school-sanctioned event and in no way do we condone the behaviour that takes place,” said Bauman. “I think it goes without saying that we reach out to parents and discourage them or at least ask that they be cautious when allowing their child to participate.”

Gordon said school administrators met with all of the Grade 12 students before the night happened.

“We have, however, a

small percentage of kids who choose to ignore these warnings,” said Gordon.

Bauman added that schools are prepared the next morning by not letting students on school grounds who are intoxicated and take a pro-active approach working with their community partners like the City of Delta and Delta police throughout the night.

“We are out connecting with our school liaison officers, certainly throughout the evening

and early morning dealing with the aftermath in a coordinated way,” he said.

“This year we put at all of our secondary schools security until relatively late in the evening as well, exterior lighting at all of the schools were lit up throughout the night as ways to deter this behaviour.

“For us, though, it still goes back to the fact that parents need to be aware of the fact that not only could their kids be putting themselves in danger by participating in these group activities, we want parents to understand that if their kids are caught vandalizing or damaging property, they will be held responsible.”

Gordon said every year there are varying degrees of involvement and fallout. This year that included a handful of schools that had graffiti painted on the outside of buildings.

“It’s a small minority of kids who are engaging in some very unfortunate and poor choices of behaviour,” said Gordon.

“We are up against a ‘socalled tradition’ that has been in this community since many of our parents were kids. We need to change the mindset for parents that this is OK, because it just isn’t.”

This time around Qualtrough is facing four declared challengers in Conservative Tanya Corbet, New Democrat Randy Anderson-Fennell, Craig DeCraene of the Greens and People’s Party of Canada candidate Angelina Ireland.

Corbet is a former

council member of the Tsawwassen First Nation government who did not seek re-election this year.

This July, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer helped kick off her campaign by paying a visit to Tsawwassen to share his vision for the country.

A nine-year Delta resident, Anderson-Fennell is an electrician for the Surrey School District. He served for several years as

an executive officer with his union, CUPE Local 728, and ran for the Delta school board in last fall’s municipal election.

Ireland is an accountant and long-time local resident who had applied to be the Conservative candidate in Delta but later withdrew.

DeCraene, who ran in the civic election for a seat on city council last fall, works in the auto glass

replacement industry.

A human rights lawyer and former Paralympic athlete, Qualtrough beat Conservative incumbent Kerry-Lynne Findlay by more than 9,000 votes in 2015, making her the first Liberal to represent South Delta in Ottawa since 1968. Delta had among the highest voter turnouts in the country in that race at just over 75 per cent.

The election is Oct. 21.

It’s a new school year in Delta with plenty of changes.

In an interview with the Optimist, school board chair Laura Dixon and superintendent Doug Sheppard were enthusiastic about the revised curriculum handed down gradually by the province, saying it complements much of the work the district has already been undertaking.

It’s a transition year where all classes after the current Grade 12 class will have the new assessment requirements, new course titles and ways to do courses, including students being able to sign up to study only certain components of a class.

“Many of the courses have seen significant change and titles that parents would have seen in their day no longer exist.

Biology 12, for an example, is now anatomy/physiology. It’ll be an interesting new set of conversations at homes where parents ask why they don’t take a certain course and kids will say they don’t have that anymore,” said Sheppard.

Dixon said Delta has already recognized that one of the most significant ways the district can ensure a child is able to learn at their best is by asking them if they have at least two adults in their

lives that believe they will be a success.

“We will be asking every student that this year.

There will be teams of educators for anybody that doesn’t respond positively and it looks like they need more support. It comes with our student connectedness and that’s something that allows students to really feel that they

“In terms of the curriculum and what’s new in the district, some of the things that we are also teaching overtly is decision making. So, there’s some really interesting pieces around critical thinking and how you build evidence to take a position. There’s some really collaborative opportunities for students to have discussions and debates about issues that have multiple sides to a

year, enrollment has, in large part, stabilized, seeing small, steady increases the past few years after years after prolonged decline. Last year Delta had 15,297 students (8,583 elementary and 6,741 secondary) and the district was projected to see a small increase this September.

Delta, meanwhile, has seven academies with a new one in basketball, a combined program for South Delta Secondary and Delta Secondary which practices in Richmond.

The school board is waiting for the bargaining process between teachers and the province to play out, but it has reached a deal with support workers.

• Sept. 7, 2:04 p.m., 1700-block of Highway 17: Victoria police requested Delta police do a wellbeing check on a female who was travelling to Tsawwassen via ferry with a male who wanted

to hurt her. Delta police conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle to assess and deemed the female to be safe. During the check an odour of liquor was detected from the driver. The driver received a breath test which had failed twice. The driver was issued an immediate roadside prohibition and the vehicle was impounded.

• Sept. 7, 10:23 p.m., Ladner Trunk Road and

Highway 17A: A report was made of multiple sports cars driving southbound through the George Massey Tunnel of speeds upwards of 150 km/h. A row of five sports cars was located at a traffic light but upon seeing police arrive the sport cars drove away at a high rate of speed. The vehicles were paced at going 155 km/h in a posted 90 km/h zone.

cars pulled over. Police approached one of the drivers while the other two drove off. The driver who was stopped by police was unlicensed. The driver was issued excessive speed and no driver’s licence violation tickets. The vehicle was also impounded. The other sports cars were unable to be located.

• Sept. 8, 1:53 a.m., 5500-block of 12th Avenue: Police observed a male and female run out of a pub to a parked vehicle while the female stumbled as she ran. The officer conducted a traffic stop and detected a distinct odour of liquor on the breath of the driver. The driver provided a breath sample and did not pass.

Huston Road and River Road: Police attended a single vehicle roll-over where the vehicle collided with a railway crossing light pole, ran off the road and overturned in a ditch.

The single occupant of the vehicle had minor injuries and was transported to hospital as a precaution.

The driver advised he was on his way to the doctor and was feeling dizzy before the collision. There was no evidence of drug or alcohol impairment or of distracted driving.

• Sept. 6, 4:25 p.m., 7200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Police were conducting traffic enforcement when officers witnessed a driver consuming an open beer. A traffic stop was initiated and a distinct odour of liquor was detected from the driver. The driver also had blood shot and watery eyes. A breath test was taken which the driver failed twice. Upon checking, the officer also noted the driver had an invalid licence from a previous roadside prohibition that was still in effect.

• Sept. 7, 1:45 a.m., 5600-block of Highway 17A: Police were conducting a roadblock to check driver sobriety. A driver pulled into the stop and admitted to having a shot of tequila earlier that night. A distinct odour of liquor was detected from the vehicle. A breath test was given to the driver which he did not pass. The driver was issued a threeday immediate roadside prohibition and his vehicle was towed to his home.

The Delta police and fire departments continue to investigate a suspicious house fire in Tsawwassen last week.

Police officers and firefighters were called to a home in the 900-block of 53A Street last Wednesday night.

Fire Chief Paul Schofield said the initial call came in at 10:42 p.m.

“Initial arriving crews found heavy flame and smoke from the lower level of the home, which was unoccupied at the time,” said Schofield. “Crews knocked down the rear fence to gain access and proceed with extinguish-

ment. There is significant damage to the structure.”

In all, 17 firefighters were on scene with four apparatus.

Schofield said it was a fairly quick knockdown and looks like the fire originated in a lower bathroom area.

A suspicious vehicle fire was reported at the same location a few weeks ago.

“Cause of the Wednesday night fire has not been determined, but we are working with Delta police on the investigation,” said Schofield.

“At this point we can’t speculate whether the two incidents are connected.

It really is in the hands of Delta police to determine that.”

Now hiring for its new fulfillment centre at the Tsawwassen First Nation, Amazon is taking a page from neighbouring Tsawwassen Mills and offering prospective employees a shuttle service from Surrey.

Amazon several weeks ago began the hiring process for 800 full-time, permanent jobs to help pick, pack and ship customer orders at the centre set to open later this year.

Hoping to attract workers throughout Metro Vancouver, the company confirmed it is offering a free employee shuttle, a route between the fulfillment centre and the Scott Road SkyTrain station.

The shuttle will be separate from one the shopping mall provides workers at the same SkyTrain

station.

The mall also offers a shuttle from Kwantlen Polytechnic University that “supplements existing public transportation routes” to Tsawwassen Mills.

Also located at the TFN, the 200-store fashion mall runs two 29-passenger shuttle buses operated by Universal Coach Line.

The mall charges a fee with tickets available in a two-pack for $4.25, 10-pack for $21 or a monthly unlimited pass for $42.

Amazon notes that its shifts will be 10 hours, four days a week.

The e-commerce giant last September announced its plan to open the 450,000-square-foot fulfillment centre at the new Delta iPort warehouse on 41B Street on Tsawwassen First Nation industrial lands.

henever government announces it’s going to make things more affordable, that it’s going to leave more money in my pocket, I tend not to end up a whole lot better off.

Maybe it’s because I’m too average to benefit, that the help is often geared at those who really need it or those who can afford to buy influence. Perhaps it’s because the amounts are too insignificant to notice or they’re quickly eaten up by costs rising in other areas.

Whatever the case, it’s hard to remember drawing a direct line between a government decision and my wallet, at least in a positive way.

Until last weekend.

I drive a 2004 Honda Accord. I don’t provide that information to brag or flaunt my wealth, but rather to set the scene for what I’m going to tell you.

Last September I paid $1,899 to ICBC for the privilege of getting behind the wheel of my luxury ride for another year. I thought that was rather steep given I’ve been driving for 35 years without an accident claim and, due to the fact I walk to work, the car is only insured for pleasure use. I realize insurance is as much about liability as it is the vehicle itself, but paying almost two grand to insure a vehicle that Craigslist would peg at somewhere in the neighbourhood of $4,000 seemed excessive.

With my insurance due in early September, I was one of the first to give the new ICBC rate structure a whirl.

The idea of putting greater onus on those who are driving up costs while cutting a break to those who aren’t a drain on the system sounded promising from my perspective, but I still wondered whether the “dumpster fire” that is our public insurer could actually lower my premium after steadily increasing it year after year, good driving behaviour be damned.

To say that I was pleasantly surprised when I was told my total would be $1,602 is an understatement. Given the friendly agent from BCAA didn’t even look at my car, the almost $300 in savings had nothing to do with the depreciation caused by the dog’s claws finally springing leaks in the back seats and everything to do with the new rate structure.

Government had finally made a decision that benefitted my bottom line, which must mean it’s only a matter of time before another move takes it away.

Taxi industry should be happy ride sharing is set to launch

love driving. A few years back I had clients in Seattle and Portland, and I used to look forward to driving down to visit them.

They started calling me the Road Warrior. Given where we live, a love of driving can come in handy (but driving does not include being parked at the tunnel).

My daughter bought herself a car a while back, but got rid of it when she moved to Vancouver.

A student, she got used to taking the bus. She moved to another location, and now needs a car again. We set out her budget and calculated how much it was going to cost her.

Between gas and insurance (which is going to go up for her), it was going to cost her over $5,000 a year. Add in the cost of the car, maintenance, depreciation, etc., it was going to work out to about $6,500 a year. A pretty expensive decision.

Cars are expensive. For her budget, she could easily take cabs and the bus and save money in the long run. The problem is, she only would need short cab rides, and cab drivers don’t like short rides. Sometimes, they won’t even show up. So her only choice was to buy a car.

What the taxi industry doesn’t realize is it’s competition isn’t

Uber and Lyft, it’s car dealers and Craigslist. Ride sharing is actually a benefit for taxis, and will grow the market. Toss in car sharing services, and there’s little reason at all to have a car — if you live in the city.

Competition is always a good thing for consumers. People will take the path of greatest convenience, given a choice. Lots of people would love to abandon their cars, but simply can’t because they can’t always rely on a cab. With ride sharing, it’s like organized (and safer) hitchhiking — if someone is going your way, catch a ride. Plus, you’ll know what it costs you in advance. The cars are clean and the riders have an incentive to make the experience a great one as they are rated.

In today’s world, lack of com-

petition will create competition.

The only way to stay ahead of it is to not give people a reason to complain. If they’re unhappy, they will find alternatives. The alternative used to be buying a car. Now there might be a new alternative.

For us in Delta, I think ride sharing will be a great thing. We have an aging population that relies on someone else driving for a very short trip. Need a ride down to Boundary Bay between buses? Hop in, I’m going that way anyway. And thanks for helping pay for my fuel.

These changes are coming, like them or not. Car rentals are getting expensive too. The alternative? Turo. It’s like Airbnb for cars. Great service, only problem is you have to pay to have the car cleaned, unless you do it yourself.

I don’t hear the car rental companies complaining, and Turo is direct competition.

Ride sharing is coming. Taxis will still survive. Can’t we all just get around?

Youngsters given chance to enjoy a Day at the Farm

Editor: Last Saturday my husband and I had the privilege of volunteering at the 14th annual Day at the Farm which was held at the Ellis family’s Westham Island Herb Farm.

It gave us the opportunity to greet old and young alike as they came through the entrance gate. We were both pleasantly surprised at the large number

of young families that attended, many of whom were visiting a farm for the first time.

We watched children learn firsthand which vegetables grew above ground, which were handpicked and which were dug up.

We saw the determination on their faces at their attempts to milk a cow (albeit a mechanical one).

We heard their peals of laughter as they jumped and rolled around in the hay. We saw their smiles of anticipation as they climbed on board for the hayrides.

Our community owes the Ellis family a huge amount of gratitude for hosting this event every year.

They are without a doubt the backbone of this

event and with the support of the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, together are able to pull off a remarkable experience for those who attend.

As one older visitor commented, “It’s like going back in time to the small country fairs that we used to experience as kids... what a treat.”

It was a great day.

When will light bulb come on?

Editor: Here’s the one question I’d like to ask politicians this election: Could we get on with it and adopt solar energy en masse?

It’s 54 years since Guy Plecash stood up to tell our Grade 6 teacher, Mr. Nanson, about a trick he’d mail-ordered from the back pages of a comic book: a kit whose bulb lit up when exposed to light.

Mr. Nanson, excited,

asked Guy to bring it to class. He did. And as promised, Guy’s bulb lit up when exposed to light: solar power. We’d just seen our first demonstration of solar power — 54 years ago. And it was an old idea even then, one as old as the universe.

So, politicians, when are we going to get on with using it en masse instead of blah-blahing about it?

No covered courts for kids to play Editor: What an inspiration the recent successes of our Canadian tennis stars (Bianca Andreescu and Felix Auger-Aliassime) are to our young people in Delta. Tennis is a life sport with no worries of concussions, is gender equal and can be played into one’s senior years.

Because of this I believe many of our young people will be anxious to learn the game. But there is a problem: our municipal council seems to think our youth would be better served by a casino.

Yes, when Delta council sought to woo a casino

licence to the former Delta Town & Country Inn location, that decision demolished the only covered tennis courts in all of Delta. In fact, Delta is the only community in the Lower Mainland that does not have a covered facility.

Thanks to council and a park staff that valued casino revenue over exercise, our youth that want to play the game when the rains come may end up watching videos instead.

My wish is that council shows some leadership in providing a racquets facility that young and old can use year round.

Editor: As the president of the newly incorporated Delta Pride Society and one of the organizers of this year’s event, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved for supporting the second annual Delta Pride Picnic that was held on Aug. 31 at Ladner’s Memorial Park.

We had such a great turn-out this year. From the young to the young-atheart, everyone seemed to have a wonderful time at this great inclusive community event. Many enjoyed the activities, the games, the food and the networking.

As members of the LGBTQ+ community in Delta, we have also been encouraged over this past year by seeing the rainbow flag being raised both at city hall and in front of the school district office for the first time. This was truly heartwarming to our community and displays the fact that Delta is a place of acceptance to all her citizens and to demonstrate that hate has no

be put in front of local venues.

First of all, the rainbow was a symbol of God’s promise not to flood the earth ever again. If the LGBTQ wants to borrow it, feel free, but they cannot claim it as their own.

If our leaders understood the definition of inclusivity and diversity, they would not go ahead with this project. What the LGBTQ organization wants is for everyone to agree with them. When we don’t, they go to the media and cry discrimination and intolerance. They claim a need for freedom

of speech and expression but don’t allow others the same freedoms.

The 2019 Pride Parade was a perfect example. The Vancouver Public Library and UBC (which exemplify diversity and inclusion by hosting speakers of multiple genres) were both specifically uninvited for hosting speakers the LGBTQ felt spoke against their agenda. I’m sorry, but who are the intolerant ones? Are those with different opinions not being discriminated against?

Where is the freedom of speech and expression for others?

While I do not support the LGBTQ, I also do not condemn them. That is not my place. I only ask that those with opposing or different opinions not be labelled as haters or intolerant. The very things the LGBTQ are fighting for are the same liberties we all deserve.

I hope to see benches with crosses on them symbolizing the saving grace of Jesus.

Will Coun. Dylan Kruger, who seems awfully supportive of the LGBTQ and their agenda, openly support and fight for that?

It’s a never-ending road

Police say there are many good truckers out there, but the bad ones continue to keep them busy IAN JACQUES

With Delta playing host to a container port and ferry terminal, as well as a thoroughfare to the U.S. border, it’s no surprise the city has some of the highest numbers of commercial vehicles on its roads each day.

That’s why the Delta Police Department has placed an emphasis on truck and commercial vehicle safety, with a largescale annual blitz as well as monthly checks and regular daily enforcement to ensure unsafe vehicles are taken off the road.

Const. Ken Usipiuk, a 12-year veteran of the force, including seven years with the traffic unit, has pretty much seen everything at the side of the road.

“The majority of the issues that our officers find are tire defects, braking problems or cargo that is not properly secured,” he said.

During the annual enforcement campaign this year, a three-day effort that included other policing agencies as well as the province’s Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement branch, 378 vehicles were targeted for full inspections and of those, 160 were pulled off the road.

One of the highlights — or lowlights depending on your perspective — was an unsafe trailer that turned out to be stolen. It had stolen plates too.

Drivers were issued 174 violation tickets during the three days, most ranging from $109 to $311.

However, a number of drivers were issued $598 tickets for failing to comply with previous orders as they had not fixed their vehicles within an allotted time. These vehicles were taken off the road. Some drivers also received multiple tickets.

Usipiuk said officers see similar situations every day when they conduct enforcement.

“Do we have a problem with the maintenance of vehicles? Yes, certainly,” he said. “But there are also many drivers and companies out there who take the time to properly inspect their vehicles, ensure vehicles are new and safe, and follow all the rules.

their drivers and we do presentations with the owners standing there. I also meet separately with the drivers and ask them what’s working and what’s not working. What can I advocate for on their behalf? I get a great list and go back to the owner.

Usipiuk said it’s a clear example of a driver not performing a proper preinspection of the vehicle.

“When I pulled the driver over, he said everything was fine when he left the yard,” recalled Usipiuk.

“If it was fine then how did all of this damage happen? This truck had airbag

up, turn on all the lights and do your walk around and you look at everything,” he said.

some that these companies put their drivers and safety first.”

Two recent incidents along Delta roads, however, highlight the fact that while the industry is trying, there’s still lots of work to be done.

Traffic unit officers pulled over a truck in the 6400-block of Highway 17 with six flat tires and a cracked rim. The driver was hauling 30 tons of gravel with an inoperative suspension.

The truck was towed and won’t be allowed back on the road until the owner can prove it has

suspension. Every airbag was deflated, so that’s the suspension. The axel had no cushioning and with 30 tonnes of gravel, it only takes so much before things start to break and once the rims break, the tires blew and finally the driver knew something was wrong.

“This had to have been broken before he hit the highway. This is negligence.”

He said it takes 10 to 15 minutes to do a proper pre-trip inspection.

“That would have been found within five seconds because you start the truck

and paperwork showed as well that the driver didn’t complete a pre-trip check.

“The first thing that should be checked is proper documentation, registration and safety because when I get in that vehicle I’m responsible,” he said.

“How does that driver not see that both safety certificates were expired and both the cab and trailer had expired registration?

“I’ve been doing this for far too long and nothing surprises me, but this is just common sense safety issues that both drivers and owners have to be more diligent and cog-

tive, it is no worse than it had been in the past, but that is far from being good enough. I wish we had a way to have a lot more enforcement — both from policing agencies, CVSE — but until you have an industry and professionals in this industry that treat their equipment the way it needs to be treated, recognize the stature and importance of the work that is being done, we will always have these marginal companies operating and it’s incredibly frustrating.”

“We are working to establish a mandatory entry-level training standard in B.C. that will line up with the federal standard. We are doing a ton of work to help the industry do better and raise the floor, but these recent incidents that you have highlighted in Delta is completely unacceptable and needs to end. I can’t tell you how frustrating it makes me and our members when we see these things happening.”

Earle said regulations need to be tightened and more provincial resources have to be put into enforcement.

“We need to see smart regulations that help companies doing the right thing to do it better and to catch companies doing the wrong thing and shut them down, but that is way easier said than done,” he said. “Often we find regulation makes it harder for the good companies to do it right and just makes the difference between those and the bottom group of companies who are doing it wrong… makes it more attractive to cheat.

Surrey-Guildford NDP MLA Garry Begg, speaking on behalf of the provincial Ministry of Transportation, said government is prepared to continue to do more to ensure commercial vehicles operate in a safe fashion.

“For years now we have had cooperation with the CVSE, Delta police, RCMP in your region and part of enforcement is education, ensuring that drivers understand their responsibilities to keep their trucks safe and safely on the road,” Begg said.

“Over the course of a year we inspect hundreds of thousands of commercial vehicles when they are stopped at weigh scales, inspection sites across the province as well as these random road stops.

Consistent with our desire to make sure the roads are safe, we are going to continue those and increase those in areas where we detect there is a trend or greater instances.

“We are more than prepared to respond with the cooperation of Delta police, RCMP and our other partners. It is a concern, for sure.”

Boundary Bay Regional Park is one of only three areas of coastal sand ecosystems in the Fraser Lowlands and is regionally important for plants, invertebrates, birds and other species.

That makes it an excellent example of what “biodiversity” actually means, which is why the Fraser River Discovery Centre has chosen it to be the location for its next BioDiversity Speaker Series event on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

“Most people may know Boundary Bay as simply a beautiful place to visit,”

said Stephen Bruyneel, the centre’s director of external relations and development.

“But it actually is far more than that, being home to flora and fauna that are dependent on the ecological processes and composition that are unique to coastal sand ecosystems.”

Tomatoes in the spotlight at annual Earthwise fest

The warm summer sun has given us ripe, juicy tomatoes of many shapes, sizes and colours, and Earthwise Society will once again be celebrating the beauty and diversity of the heirloom tomato in all its glory.

This year’s annual Heirloom Tomato Fest takes place on Saturday, Sept. 14 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Earthwise Garden in Boundary Bay. It will feature a colourful array of certified organic heirloom tomatoes, whose seeds have been carefully saved and handed down through the generations.

I have a button bag. I have a key collection. I have a box full of cables.

These are not things I dip into on a regular basis.

But heck, I might need to someday.

You just never know.

“Why are we keeping this?” the husband asked the other day.

He was rooting around in what I call the Everything Drawer. The Everything Drawer is in the kitchen and holds all manner of things. Takeout menus. Scissors. Tape.

Pencils, pens, playing cards, matches, cheque-

books, Post-it Notes, magic markers, paperclips, golf tees, clothespins.

He was holding the bag that contained the key collection.

“Those are keys,” I said.

“I know they are keys,” he said. “Why are we keeping them?”

We’re keeping them, I told him, because we might need them someday.

Never mind that one or two may be associated with suitcases that we may no longer have, and that another one or two may be connected to the shed that we had replaced.

We may need them one day. As I say, you never know.

Then there’s my button bag. It contains perhaps 300 buttons, many of which came with articles of clothing in case a button flew the coop.

We won’t get rid of them either, even though I haven’t the foggiest idea whether the buttons’ matching clothing items long ago was sent to good-

will.

“But this,” said the husband, “this is really stupid.”

He’d moved on from the Everything Drawer and was holding the box of cables. There were perhaps 20 of them.

“You know,” he continued, “in the interests of de-cluttering, shouldn’t we toss them?”

I’m reluctant, I said.

Most households, I ventured to suggest, probably also have boxes of cables that aren’t plugged into anything, but which may come in handy someday.

The husband glared at me.

“OK,” I said. “The cables can go.”

But I’m keeping the keys and the buttons, I said, and everything else in the Everything Drawer.

I may need a key for something someday, even though its suitcase has vanished.

It may be a match for a shed down the road. Hey, you never can tell.

Cello quartet to perform

The Vancouver Cello Quartet will perform at South Delta Baptist Church tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. Formed in 2012, the quartet plays classical and contemporary works. The concert is the first of the Vancouver Chamber Music Society’s Tsawwassen series, which will continue in the fall and into early 2020.

Dream projects continue to become reality for South Delta author Ashley Spires.

Agent Binky: Pets of the Universe, based on her Binky the Space Cat graphic novels series, made its TV debut last Saturday.

The premiere episode was on Treehouse Network and will be on every Saturday at 9:40 a.m.

Pacific time for a 26-episode season.

McKee hosts open house

McKee Seniors Recreation Centre is hosting its annual open house Sept. 16 to 21.

The open house is an opportunity to learn more about the more than 50 programs the Ladner seniors’ centre hosts throughout the year. There will also be some unique events and guest presentations during the week, including a safe driving session for seniors and a dance party.

“We have our fingers crossed for season two, because I’ll be writing some of those episodes,” said Spires. “There are seven books in the series, so there is lots of material to work with.”

Binky the Space Cat, which is the inspiration for the series, is based on a cat who thinks he is in outer space and his house is a space station.

“In my books he is always fighting against the aliens and to protect

the “Hollywood” treatment.

Last year, The Most Magnificent Thing, Spires’ bestselling picture book of the same name, published

by Corus’ Kids Can Press in 2014, was turned into an animated short film, featuring the narration of Hollywood icon Whoopi Goldberg and screen and stage star Alison Pill.

“Certainly I dreamed that something like this would happen, but I have to pinch myself sometimes to make sure it is real,” she said. “To come full circle

and get to see these characters that I have created move across the screen is pretty amazing, surreal in fact.”

Spires, who grew up in Tsawwassen, has won numerous awards for her work.

On Tuesday, she also released her newest book, Fairy Science, the first in a picture book series with Penguin Random House in the U.S. and Canada, and her first co-publishing

deal with Crown Books in the U.S. “It’s about a fairy who doesn’t believe in magic.

She is the only one who is all behind science, so it’s very silly and goofy, but has a lot of science tips and something kids will laugh at and something that teachers can use in the classroom,” she said.

“I’m very pleased with how it turned out and I can’t wait to share it with everyone.”

The Tsawwassen Rotary Club is once again hosting the annual Terry Fox Run in support of the Terry Fox Foundation and cancer research.

The event is set for Sunday, Sept. 15 at the South Delta Recreation Centre where participants can walk, run, ride, push a stroller or rollerblade as funds are raised to help continue Terry’s legacy.

There are five-kilometre and 10-kilometre routes.

a.m. with the run starting at 10 a.m.

“This is the third year we have been at the South Delta Rec Centre,” said Rotarian Sara Kirby. “This location is great. Lots of space for everyone. There will be music, food for afterwards and it’s just a great, fun atmosphere.”

The route is through Beach Grove and along the trails.

“We encourage anyone to come out. We have parents who come out with strollers, little kids out on bikes, a lot of walkers and runners,” she said. “It is

really designed for anyone who wants to come out and participate in a fun event. The five-kilometre loop is a nice route for everyone.”

Participants don’t have to fundraise in advance in order to participate.

“There is no minimum donation required.

Obviously it is nice to have donations to go towards the Terry Fox Foundation.

Go for a run and afterwards celebrate with some great local beer at the third annual Winded 5km run for charity presented by Four Winds.

Winded is set for Sunday, Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. The run starts at Centennial Beach and the route takes participants along area trails before finishing at Cammidge House in Boundary Bay Regional Park for the postrace barbecue.

“We decided we wanted to do an event first that would benefit the community and the people within the community, so Deltassist is such a great organization and has so many programs that help youth, seniors, so it was a good fit for us,” said Adam Mills, sales and marketing director for Four Winds.

“It’s a fun event with a real positive vibe of getting the community together.”

“They are amazing to work with. It’s a great community, family event,” said Danes. “To see great community support as well from other sponsors is fantastic. It’s not a serious run, it’s just lighthearted and all about community.

Acclaimed Tsawwassenraised chef Kevin Cherkas will soon showcase his culinary skills at the world’s leading gastronomic festival in San Sebastian, Spain.

Cherkas, the head chef at Cuca Restaurant in Bali, Indonesia, is the lone Canadian representative at Gastronomika 2019, which attracts renowned chefs, culinary experts and industry professionals.

“I am honoured to be presenting at Gastronomika 2019 and proud to be the only Canadian chef,” Cherkas said. “We aim to present San Sebastian’s audience with something that will blow their mind.”

The South Delta Secondary grad was awarded his culinary arts degree at Vancouver Community College and took his first professional steps at the Metropolitan Hotel in Vancouver.

“I never thought it unusual to travel across the world learning to cook,” he said.

In 2001 he left Vancouver for New York City to work under celebrity chef Daniel Boulud and in 2003 moved to the birthplace of molecular gastronomy, Spain, honing his skills at some of the country’s most revered restaurants. Notaries say people under 55 still need a will If there is no will in place, custody of any underage children may not be assigned as intended B.C. notaries are raising awareness that people under age 55 need to create a legal will.

A survey last year by Ipsos for the BC Notaries Association found that while 67 per cent of people aged 55 and older have a will in place, 62 per cent aged 35 to 54 and 77 per cent aged 18 to 34 do not have a will regardless of whether they own a home, have dependant children or other important considerations.

“A legal will ensures that those you love and care about will be provided for, in accordance with your wishes, around the distribution of your estate,” said Daniel Boisvert, a notary in Tsawwassen and president of the BC Notaries Association.

“A will takes the guesswork and pressure off of family members or other loved ones and provides you with peace of mind that your estate will transition smoothly, whether it be assets or the custody of a child,” said Boisvert.

B.C. notaries remind British Columbians of five key reasons people under the age of 55 should have a will: • You have children under age 18 • You own a home • You are separated, divorced or living in a common-law relationship • You have pets • You want peace of mind about your family’s future The Ipsos survey found only 34 per cent of parents with children aged 18 and under have a will. If there is no will, or the will is not properly prepared, cus-

tody of any underage children may not be assigned as you intended.

Further, if the public guardian and trustee is brought in to administer the estate, the province may then decide on the future of dependent children and distribution of assets.

“We can’t emphasize enough how important it is for parents to have a will,” said Kristy Martin, a notary in Langford. “A legal will gives clear direction as to the guardianship of the children, rather than this important decision being made by the courts

or government. This is particularly important if children are orphaned or if there is a complicated family situation, because it creates certainty for all families.”

Another concern may be the welfare of a pet and ensuring it will be looked after by a friend or family member if you are no longer able to do so.

Overall only 44 per cent of B.C. adults have a will in place and only 57 per cent of homeowners have a current will, according to the survey.

“When serving clients who are first-time home buyers we help them understand the purchasing process, as well as other types of documentation they may want to put in place such as a will, now that they own a significant asset,” said Tarja McLean, a notary in Kelowna. “This may be a particular concern if only one person’s name is on the title.”

For most people, creating a will doesn’t take as much time as they expect.

A good way to start the process is to think about who you would want to care for your children, inherit your home and any other assets.

“Creating a will can typically be done in two short meetings,” said

David Watts, a notary in Vancouver. “During the first meeting, we will discuss a general overview of your assets and your intentions for their distribution. The second meeting finalizes your plan and your paperwork.”

The remembering, deciding and reflecting that takes place in the planning of the service are often an important part of the process of grief and mourning. Ultimately, this process of contemplation and discovery creates a memorable and moving funeral experience for all who attend.

We gather together to establish the significance of a life. Instead of dismissing the whole funeral process in an effort to escape the reality of death, we should work to make the funeral as meaningful and healing as possible. It is impossible to progress through grief without first facing the fact of the loss.

It is important to recognize that funerals are for the living, for those who will suffer the trauma of losing a loved one. It is through the funeral process that a number of emotional needs are met for those who grieve.

A funeral is similar to other ceremonies in our lives. Like a graduation ceremony, a wedding or a

baptism, a funeral is a rite of passage by which we recognize an important event that distinguishes our lives. The funeral declares a death has occurred.

The funeral is the first step in healing and has both psychological and social healing aspects.

It is often the initial step toward separation from the deceased to the beginning of the grief process and re-establishing a place in our community without the loved one.

The funeral ritual makes the death a reality for those who are bereaved.

The ritual of viewing the deceased may be seen by some as harsh and unnecessary and they may say, “I just want to remember him the way he was,” however, it is a reality and confirmation for the person grieving as to the finality of the loss, thus allowing them to begin healing.

Funerals are often a time for remembering the deceased, and telling stories or memories, as well as rituals to help in the psychological healing.

The funeral allows for the community to support the mourners, and gives structured time and interaction with members other than the family. Attending the funeral allows us to deal with the loss, say goodbye and reaffirms the importance of living.

The Delta Hospice Society exists so that people in Delta impacted by a life-threatening illness, end of life or loss-of-life experience relief of suffering. The society knows the death of a loved one or friend can be a very difficult experience.

Grief can be described as the human experience in response to loss.

Following the death of a loved one, it is very natural to grieve. An individual may grieve not only the loss of the person, but also the hopes, dreams, needs and expectations of that person.

How one experiences grief is unique and each person must work through their own personal journey of loss.

The booklets Understanding Grief and When Someone Dies are free and offer practical help for family and friends.

They are available in paper form at the Centre for Supportive Care. They are also viewable on the society’s website at www. deltahospice.org under the Learning Resources tab.

Delta Hospice offers three free groups this fall for those who are living with grief experiences.

If you recently experienced the death of a loved one, then consider joining a safe and supportive group for bereaved adults to share with and listen to others in similar situations and learn to navigate your grief process.

If you are recently bereaved and interested in self-care practices, join a group to learn a variety of self-care techniques and participate in experiential guided relaxation to help address feelings of depression, exhaustion and anxiety as they relate to grief.

And finally if your recent

loss was due to suicide and want the support of others in similar circumstances, join the adult Suicide Grief Support Group where you can share your feelings and thoughts in a safe and supportive environment, learn about coping strategies and resources, and develop community with others.

Delta Hospice Society also emphasizes the palliative approach which offers care and support to people early on from the time of a life-threatening diagnosis.

It offers a Restorative Yoga group for people living with cancer where body, breath and mind come together in fully supported reclining yoga positions.

It’s only fitting Dave Chyzowski is back in a position to share his remarkable hockey journey.

The 48-year-old is the new head coach of the Delta Hockey Academy’s Girls Prep Team and also an assistant with the Vancouver Giants. He has moved back into a teaching role after working as Director of Sales and Marketing for the Kamloops Blazers.

Both programs feature players aspiring to reach the next level and you can’t find anyone better than Chyzowski to share his experience.

He was a Western Hockey League star who captained Canada to the World Junior Hockey Championship in 1990. A year earlier he was taken second overall in the 1989 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders and his pro career included stops in three North American leagues and another seven years in Europe.

If that’s not enough, there was also over a decade coaching in Kamloops Minor Hockey where his sons Nick and Ryan went on to play in the WHL. Ryan, 19, is currently an assistant captain with the Medicine Hat Tigers.

“Those kids going through slumps think it’s the end of the world. It’s fun to see them because I see myself,” Chyzowski laughed.

“Everybody wants to score goals. First of all, you need to hit the net and you need to go to the net. Don’t expect the puck to go in. (NHL hall-of-famer) Mike Bossy’s philosophy was shooting 5-hole every time. I tell kids you’re not good enough to hit the corner every time.”

At DHA, Chyzowski is not only coaching in an academy environment for the first time but working with girls too. He couldn’t be more impressed.

“It’s been unbelievably gratifying. They are phenomenal kids.

(Laughing) I’m used to yelling and screaming at boys to the point where my teeth are falling out. Honestly, they have a completely different mindset. It has been a breath of fresh air for me.

I love it.

“I see them in the gym. I see them in the classroom. They are so dedicated that it motivates me to make sure I am doing my due diligence to be the best I can be every day to give them the best opportunity.”

It was an impressive 4-1 season-opening win for South Delta United over the visiting Coquitlam Metro Ford Rampage in B.C. Coastal Soccer League U17 Girls Division One action on Sunday at Dugald Morrison Park.

It’s going to be a season to remember for the South Delta United Division One U12 boys soccer team regardless of what happens on the pitch.

The group of 11-year-olds, along with some players from the club’s U11 Division One team, will be travelling to England next March for a trip of soccer, culture and fun.

Basing themselves out of London, United will play three matches against teams from London and the surrounding area. They will take in a Premier League match featuring Leicester FC and Watford FC, as well as a Champions League match between Charlton Athletic and Queens Park Rangers. The boys will also attend training sessions at Tottenham Hotspur’s Academy and West Ham United’s Academy.

There will be a cultural trip out to Stonehenge and the beautiful Cathedral City of Salisbury. Other plans are to enjoy the amenities of London, such as, The London Eye, The Tower of London, a night at the Theatre and a visit to Buckingham Palace, to name a few.

“The experience of training and playing soccer in England will give the boys a lifetime memory and will be an encouragement to their love of the game and skill, plus an understanding

that through a dream and hard work, this can become a reality,” explained United coach Owain McKibbin. “The boys’ hard effort and dedication to their fundraising activities has already shaped them into a stronger team and shown them they can achieve a dream.”

The boys have been busy fundraising in the community with chocolate bar sales, bottle drives, hot dog sales and corporate fundraising.

“This is a significant undertaking and we have appreciated the tremendous support we have received to date, but still have a long way to go,” continued McKibbin.

The latest fundraising effort is a beer and burger fundraiser on Saturday (Sept. 14) from 6-to-9 p.m. at the Landing Pub and Grill. For $15 customers will get a burger, their choice of beverage (wine, beer or pop) and support the team too. There will also be raffle draws.

“We truly appreciate of how supportive and generous our community is and we welcome this opportunity to show how skilled and competitive our U12 team is, even in a European setting. We feel the boys will be a team to be proud of in England,” added McKibbin.

Islanders standout caps busy summerwithsilveratnationals A terrific summer on the lacrosse floor concluded with a silver medal for Jared Maznik at the National Bantam Championships in Coquitlam last month.

It was back in May when the Ladner native earned a roster spot with Team B.C. following a three-day tryout process.

The hosts went 3-1-1 in roundrobin play at Nationals with wins over Saskatchewan (9-5), Nova Scotia (16-0), Manitoba (16-3), a tie against Ontario (4-4) and a loss to First Nations (6-4).

That set-up a rematch with First Nations in the semi-finals and B.C. avenged the earlier loss with a 7-3 triumph.

B.C. was just seconds away from beating Ontario in round-robin play. This time the Eastern powerhouse jumped out to a 4-0 lead and cruised to an 8-3 win in the gold medal game.

Maznik was among B.C.’s top scorers in the tournament with 10 goals. He earned player-of-the-game honours against Nova Scotia.

Earlier, he had a leading role in the Delta Islanders advancing to the Bantam A1 Provincials where he earned all-star honours.

He has been playing the box and field versions of the game since he was five with the Islanders and Delta Footmen organizations.

Maznik also spent part of his summer playing for club team — the Woodsmen — where he helped them win gold over

The Delta Pacers will usher in the volleyball season next week by welcoming the defending U Sport national men’s champion to Ladner for an exhibition match.

The Trinity Western University Spartans will take on Douglas College next Wednesday (Sept.

18) at 7 p.m. The match is free of charge and the doors open at Delta Secondary at 6 p.m.

DSS teacher and senior boys coach Andrew Robson put the game

together. Pacers boys and girls volleyball teams from Grade 8 to senior will practice at 4:30 p.m. then take in the action.

The Spartans line-up is loaded with outstanding talent from across the country.

Derek Epp (Saskatoon) played for the senior national team this summer while Brodie Hofer (Langley) and Calgary’s Jesse and Mathias Elser played for Canada at U21 World Championships. Several more players are part of the national team program.

“They are the best university vol-

leyball program in the country by a long shot and Douglas is striving to be the same at the college level,” said Robson. “It should be a fun game with some pretty cool athletes on both sides of the net. It’s an opportunity to give the sport more exposure.

I think a lot of people don’t see it at the highest of levels. It’s never really on TV and you kind of have to seek it out. They are both in pre-season mode right now and happy to do it.”

The men’s volleyball program has a history of recruiting DSS talent including Robson himself. The latest is 2019 grad Gavin Payne.

Wonderful Father, Loving Grandpa, Uncle and devoted Husband, Al joined Trudy, the love of his life a mere few weeks after losing her. Al is predeceased by his parents Eric and Flossie of McAuley, Manitoba, his brother Lind (Ethel) and sister Joyce (Jim). Al is survived by his brother Walt (Diane), and many nieces and nephews across Canada, who will miss their gentle Uncle. Al worked for the BC Ambulance Service for most of his working life and will be remembered as a kind, compassionate, humble, caring soul. Al was also an avid hiker and so many will remember those amazing hikes to Spruce Lake, the Two Lions and so many other adventures.

He stayed close to his farming roots, returning to McAuley for seeding and harvest. You could always find Al repairing or building some structure at home or for someone.

Beloved Mother, Nana, Aunt and wife, Trudy slipped away gently, just days before her 89th birthday, leaving behind her husband of 60 years.Trudy is predeceased by her son Gordon.

Trudy was an amazing, organized, strong woman.

An ER nurse for many years as well as the face you would see at the Tsawwassen Medical Clinic before she became the manager of the Prostate Centre in Vancouver. She was the caterer extraordinaire for the Alliance Church and spent many hours volunteering for the Boundary Bay Bluebacks in her children's younger years. She and Al spent many hours volunteering for the Delta Hospital, She was a humble lady in the background of events, quietly helping people. Her life touched so many and she will be missed so much.

Trudy and Al are survived by their children Brad (Christine) and Brenda (Kevin), their cherished granddaughters Samantha and Michaela and precious great-grandson Cooper.

Mum was very active socially and made friends wherever she went. Mum loved to swim. She went to Winskill pool most mornings for more than 20 years. Mum also felt strongly that making a contribution to others was the core of being a good person, so she volunteered as a green coat at YVR airport for 25 years and she made an effort to visit many seniors at the KinVillage’s Assisted Living complex over the later part of her life. Mum was independent and a self−determined person who lived, loved, and contributed to all those who had the opportunity to know her.

With our very broken hearts, we announce that we lost our Ma, Susan Anne Blackhall (nee Jensen) after a courageous one year battle with cancer.

Ma, as everyone called her, was the core of our family. She leaves behind her loving husband, Forbes; her two daughters Laura (Chris) and Tracy (Bill); her two granddaughters, Cassidy (Kellen) and Emily; sister, Frankie (Dennis); nieces, Kristin (Todd), Cortney (Dindo), Lindsay (Wes); great nephews, Ryder and Talan; great niece, Sydney; and of course her dog, Brew.

Ma was the most selfless person and she was beautiful inside and out.

Ma was the hardest worker, extremely dedicated to her job at the Tsawwassen Medical Clinic where she worked for 31 years.

What Ma enjoyed most was spending time with her girls (daughters and granddaughters).

Ma loved traveling especially to Mexico and Laughlin with good friends and of course her many trips to Disneyland.

Debbie Chow passed away peacefully on August 5th, 2019.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Duncan Chow; their three daughters, Emily, Laura, and Lyndsey; and son−in−law, Bret Hodge. Also, her dear siblings, many much−loved nieces, nephews, in−laws, and friends.

Debbie was born in Vancouver and was the daughter of Carol and Pete Kinvig. She grew up in White Rock and then moved to Ladner to raise her family. Debbie was well known and loved for her cheerful personality, positive attitude, and adventurous spirit. She continued to live a vibrant and courageous life even upon receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis.

The Celebration of Debbie’s Life will be held on September 15th, 2019 at the Semiahmoo Fish and Game Club at 1 PM − 5PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Debbie’s honour can be made to the Delta Hospice in Ladner, BC.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and grandfather. Denis was unexpectedly taken from us, too soon, due to complications of a brain tumor. Denis is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Nadine; his children Mike (Elaine), Steve (Leslie), Joe (Nikki), Ben (Erin), Jenny (Chris), and Kristina (Ashley); his grandchildren Will, Kaylen, CJ, Alyssa, Adam, Liam and McKayla; his three sisters Jane, Linda and Judy; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends and colleagues. Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Denis married his high school sweetheart, Nadine, in 1971 and they settled in Regina. In 1973, he began working for Sask Housing, which began his life long passion for building accessible, affordable housing. In 1988, Denis took a position with Affordable Housing and moved his family from Regina to Tsawwassen.

Denis branched out on his own in 1991, forming Loeppky Consulting Limited. His company helped design and build many affordable housing developments throughout BC. Most recently, Denis worked closely with Musqueam First Nation.

This partnership, as well as the friendships he developed through his work, were very important to Denis and brought him much happiness. When he wasn’t working, Denis still put his skills as a builder to good use on home renovation projects, refinishing and building furniture, and tinkering in his workshop. And, he was always a phone call away, with just the right tool, whenever something needed fixing. Denis also loved spending time with his grandchildren who brought him endless joy.

Denis taught us that “nice guys” finish first, and his generosity, optimism, and kindness will be sorely missed. There will be no funeral, per Denis’ request.

CROWE, John William April 17, 1929 - August 4, 2019 Born in Tonbridge, Kent, England, John passed away peacefully in Ladner early last month after a courageous battle with bone cancer. I have special memories of my darling husband who emigrated to Vancouver in 1957. What a special man he was, gentle, kind and true loving friend to many, especially children; he was a great support to refugees from all corners of the world, known as “Uncle John Santa Claus”.

He was happily married to Gwendolen for 65 years, and they travelled together to many parts of the globe by sea and air. He was very talented at woodwork (built a log cabin at Chilliwack Lake), journeyman sheet metal worker, Local 280. He served in the R.A.F., before coming to Canada and was a longtime member of both St. James United Church, Vancouver, and later Ladner United.

John was a youth counsellor, singer, actor, chef, artist, musician, boxer, nature lover; a co-founder of United Players Theatre Company, and Metro Theatre, he will be deeply missed by close friends and also family in England.

Celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 21st at 1:00pm at Ladner United Church 4960 48 Ave, Delta, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to his favourite charity; Operation Eyesight Universal, 200 - 4 Parkdale Crescent NW, Calgary, Alberta, T2N 9Z9. SVENDSEN, Robert Senius June 24, 1937 − August 31, 2019 It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Svendsen on August 31, 2019. Bob was born in Stettler, Alberta, on June 24, 1937. He grew up on his family’s farm, joining the military shortly after graduating in 1956. He served 25 years in the military, which often pulled him away from his cherished family. After retirement, he applied his genius to other endeavours, always focusing on how to spend more time with us.

In the fall of 1961, he was fortunate to meet the love of his life, Evie. They married on June 20, 1962, in Calgary, and enjoyed 57 years of love, close friends, and a tight−knit family. Dad found the perfect partner in Mom. He, an introvert at heart, was content to care for his prize thoroughbreds, and Mom, a vivacious and adventurous woman, found the rhythm ideal and made each a better version of themselves. There was a lot of laughter, dancing, teasing, and fierce commitment in their lives together. They were proud parents and engaged grandparents.

Our dad was the epitome of a gentleman, a most generous man, and as a father, insisted we were unique and gifted children. He was our rock, and entrenched in us solid values; that animals were our responsibility to care for and protect; that those less fortunate were simply lacking love and we should help in any way possible; and most importantly that our mother was the root and pulse of our family. He adored Mom. He raised us old−school and we are thankful for his strict and loving guidance. He also taught his grandchildren respect, generosity, kindness, compassion, and that they would one day make a difference.

Predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Marie, and his sister Aline. Survived by siblings, Roger, Andy, Lou, Claude, Sally, Guy, Mike, Paul, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and his cat Mittens.

O’CONNELL, James Brien 1950 - 2019 Surrounded by his close family, Jim passed away suddenly and peacefully on September 9th. He will be greatly missed by his wife of 39 years, Corinne, his children Bryan (Norah), Colleen (Ian), grand daughter Isabelle, his sisters Maureen and Rosemary of Winnipeg, and the rest of his loving family and all who knew him.

We are fortunate to have had him in our lives. Bob was predeceased by his parents, Aage and Annie Ethel Svendsen; parents−in−law, Aldwin and Josephine Martinolich; brothers, Ed, Sid, Lisle, and Larry; and his sister, Etta Svendsen. He leaves behind his wife, Evie; daughters, Tracy (Mark) and Kelly (Mike); grandchildren, Dakota, Caitlin, Olivia, and Sloan; sister, Laura; brother−in−law, Larry; brother, Eric; and his sisters−in−law, Joyce, Dot, and Karola.

We would also like to thank his incredible friend of nearly 60 years, Mike Smith, who called him daily and always brought our father joy. The Smith family has been tightly entwined with ours, and for that, we are forever grateful.

There will be no funeral as per Bob’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, we would suggest donating to the Royal Canadian Legion in honour of his fellow veterans.

We would also ask that in his memory, please do an act of kindness to someone in need, reach out to those who cannot help themselves, and look upon those less fortunate with love.

We know Bob will appreciate your actions and as he would say, "thank you ever so kindly."

OLIVER, Clara Frederica Bly. February 22, 1923 − August 31, 2019 Passed peacefully surrounded by the wonderful caring staff of West Shore Laylum.

Predeceased by her loving husband, Roy Latta Oliver; and their infant daughter, Susan. Survived by children, Barbara, David (Pat), Jim (Bev), and Laura; and grandchildren, Sean (Melissa), Devon (Chris), Michael, and Thomas.

This position is available immediately and will start as a 3 month term trial period, and will be extended for more long-term if this proves to be a suitable fit for both the Sanctuary and the individual. WEST, Sharon E. March 25, 1942 − September 4, 2019 Sharon passed away in Delta Hospital.

She was much loved and will be missed dearly by her children, Ronna−Lee, Kirk, Randy, Rick, Kimberlee, and Jay. Proud grandma to eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
