MP hints at crossing funding

Delta MP Carla Qualtrough is urging B.C. Premier John Horgan to take action to address congestion at the George Massey Tunnel.

In a recent letter to the premier, the firstterm Liberal MP said she’s pleased to learn the region’s mayors and First Nations’ chiefs have reached a consensus on a new crossing, adding she’s had many conversations on the issue with her constituents, transportation experts and others, including Delta Mayor George Harvie and federal Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Francois-Philippe Champagne.

Qualtrough stated she’s made her opinion known to all, and that is another crossing is not only essential but urgently needed.

“As you know the George Massey Tunnel provides an integral crossing of the Fraser River for Highway 99, connecting the Greater Vancouver area north of the Fraser,

This is a national and an international trade corridor that is essential to our region and federal economies,” she wrote.

Qualtrough also hinted

that federal money would be coming as her government has committed significant funding for such infrastructure improvements.

“Funding is available for large-scale, transformational projects that support identified priorities such as trade and transportation, and public tran-

sit, and that are in the public interest. In my opinion, the George Massey Tunnel replacement project would fit these parameters, especially given that there is an appetite to include rapid and/or green transit in the crossing,” she added.

Horgan recently openly hinted a twin-tunnel proposal would get serious

consideration from his government.

Noting federal dollars wouldn’t have come with the previous provincial Liberal government’s 10-lane bridge plan because it would have been tolled, Horgan said Metro Vancouver mayors now appear united in their support for a plan to reduce traffic congestion at the aging tunnel.

In response, Delta South Liberal MLA Ian Paton accused Horgan of misrepresenting the wishes of the mayors.

“The mayors were very clear: any replacement cannot touch the Fraser River, otherwise a lengthy federal environmental assessment would be triggered. That’s why they wanted to explore the option of a deep bore tunnel under the river bed — not a twinning of the existing tunnel as John Horgan is suggesting,” Paton said in a statement.

The provincial Ministry of Transportation has stated that a business case for a preferred crossing option would be completed by late 2020.

East Ladner residents are patiently waiting to have their voices heard as an Environmental Appeal Board hearing continues in Tsawwassen.

The hearing concerns an air quality permit issued last year to the contentious GFL/EnviroSmart composting facility. It began at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn June 3 with opening statements to a three-member panel.

At the start of the hearing, it was indicated GFL would need four days to

lay out its case, but that has now stretched into seven days of testimony and cross-examination by Metro Vancouver lawyer Greg Nash as well as the resident appellants.

GFL lawyer Gary Letcher has presented numerous witnesses, trying to prove to the board that the hundreds of complaints made by residents are not based on scientific evidence and that residents are not experts in determining whether foul odours were coming from GFL or farming operations in the area.

During his opening,

Letcher told the board the permit was too restrictive, required too many records and reports that were costly for GFL, and that GFL should be recognized for its role in building a $37 million enclosed facility.

GFL director Brian King was under-cross examination on Tuesday when the Optimist was on hand for part of the afternoon session.

Nash took King to task for the way GFL has compiled its monitoring records, how the facility was operated when GFL acquired it, whether staff, including King, has the

qualifications to operate a composting facility adequately and whether the company took odour problems seriously.

King said he was aware of the increase in complaints, and they were of concern, but questioned the validity of some.

“There seemed to be an increase, but until the complaint is validated as us as the source, we considered those to be suspect,” said King. “With the amount of improvements we were doing, we were addressing the issues. I thought there were other factors at play. The num-

bers in my eyes don’t reflect what was actually going on.”

As the hearing is in progress, the residents are unable to make any public comments, but they are hopeful to begin their testimony either today or Friday.

The residents believe the permit is inadequate and does not do enough to alleviate the smell that has impacted their quality of life for years.

The hearing is scheduled to continue June 17, 18 and 26 to 28. It runs 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and is open to the public.

Teacher suspended for comments to student

A Delta private school teacher has been disciplined for telling a student to kill himself.

According to a recent ruling released by the B.C. Commissioner for Teacher Regulation, Boris Pekarsky was teaching a Grade 9 band class when the incident occurred in November 2016.

Pekarsky yelled at the student who was not on task to sit down. As the student was doing so, he tripped over a percussion instrument, causing a loud noise. According to the ruling, Pekarsky then told the student, as well as another student in the percussion section, to leave class. As the student who tripped was leaving, Pekarsky said, “Go kill yourself, it won’t matter anyway.”

Several students heard the comment and “were shocked and upset by Pekarsky’s comment.”

In January 2017, Pekarsky met with a small group of students from the Band 9 class, most of whom were in Honours

Band, saying he didn’t know what to do about the behaviour of a few students whom he felt had been “acting out.”

Later that month, the school disciplined the teacher by suspending him without pay for 10 days in March 2017.

The ruling notes Pekarsky admitted the conduct described constitutes professional misconduct and agreed to a three-day suspension of his independent school certificate that will be served June 25, 26 and 27, 2019.

The ruling also notes that in determining that a suspension is an appropriate consequence, the commissioner considered several factors, including the teacher failing to treat all students in his class with respect and failing to consider the hurtful impact of his words.

The commissioner also noted Pekarsky’s January 2017 discussion with some of the students was inappropriate and his discussion about other students created an unhealthy dynamic in the classroom.

It’s too soon to tell what caused the death of a grey whale that was spotted in Boundary Bay last week.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada A/marine mammals coordinator Paul Cottrell said there was no obvious cause of death, but investigators took photographs and multiple tissue and organ samples for further analysis following a necropsy done on the animal at Sea Island last Thursday morning.

He said preliminary observations indicated the whale’s body condition was better than the previous five whales found dead in B.C. waters — three stranded in Haida Gwaii, one near Victoria and one on the west coast of Vancouver Island.

“The other five were all quite compromised and emaciated,” he said.

The whale found in Boundary Bay, however, had higher fat content in the blubber, although Cottrell cautioned that more testing is still required.

A dead grey whale was transferred from Boundary Bay to Sea Island so a necropsy could be performed.

He said necropsies are crucial to determine if there are other factors at work — including vessel strikes, entanglements with fishing gear or pathogens — and to identify potential threats to the rest of the population.

That’s where the public can be of invaluable assistance, Cottrell said.

“Our B.C. marine mammal response program is really dependent on the eyes and ears of the public

that are out on the water, that are walking beaches, that see these dead animals or see injured, distressed or entangled animals to call us immediately,” he said.

Canada’s marine mammal incident reporting hotline, at 1-800-465-4336, is monitored 24 hours a day and ensures that investigators can get to a whale as soon as possible.

In the case of a dead whale, a swift response is

crucial because fresh tissue and organ samples can provide better information, Cottrell said.

In the case of a stranded live whale, a quick response might save its life.

“An example is the live stranded grey whales that we had in Boundary Bay,” Cottrell said, referring to an incident at Centennial Beach last month.

There’s a lot on his plate and he’s looking forward to the challenges ahead.

Ken Baird became chief of the Tsawwassen First Nation this spring, saying he felt the time was right for him to try to serve his people in the important role.

“My priorities have always been our elders and youth as well as the health and well-being of all our members. That’s been my platform,” Baird told the Optimist in a recent interview.

A member of the TFN legislature for the last decade, Baird won the top job in April when he defeated incumbent Bryce Williams 86 to 78. Baird had lost a close race to Williams three years earlier.

A father of six and grandad to four, Baird was born in Vancouver and raised in Langley but moved back to Tsawwassen 25 years ago. He worked in the asphalt business and then as a printer before joining the TFN’s public works department where he most recently served as supervisor.

He describes the TFN community as a very close-knit one.

“I’m related to half the people here and when I married my wife, Cindy, I became related to the other half, pretty much,” he said.

Baird explained one of the top priorities is to make sure all members

are ready when tax exempt status is lost within a couple of years, a provision of the First Nation’s 2009 treaty.

“It’s definitely a case of helping them prepare.

We’re also looking at ways, if it’s possible, to compensate them.”

“When it comes to future developments on TFN lands, the members are very involved. We want to bring the best deal on

the table,” he said. “At one time we were in a position where we had to make deals to get money in the coffers.”

Many members don’t reside at the First Nation, something Baird hopes will eventually change with new housing to encourage more Tsawwassen people to come home.

A new cultural centre is also on the horizon. He said the TFN, eventually, will have its own elementary school.

“We’re going to get to a point in the next 10 years where our build-out of residents will warrant a school. It’s down the road but definitely something that will happen.”

Baird’s election makes him the third chief in the past seven years as Williams defeated incumbent Kim Baird in 2012.

This year’s election saw a total of 318 eligible to vote out of a population of 491 members. A total of 175 members voted for a turnout of 55 per cent.

Almost 70 votes were submitted by mail-in ballot.

“I reached a point in my political career where I was ready for it. I truly want to make a difference,” said Baird.

The Tsawwassen legislature is the highest body of the Tsawwassen government, consisting of 13 Tsawwassen members elected every three years, plus the chief, for a total of 14 members. The top vote getters, plus the chief, form the executive council.

• June 3, 10:11 p.m., 1200-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported that his black road bike with white trim (value $2,000) had been left outside a shop unlocked from 3 to 5 p.m. and was now missing.

Owner is trying to provide further identifying information. Reminder to all bike owners: please stop by a district community police office to register

your bike to help protect against theft, or potentially have it returned if it is stolen and recovered.

• June 6, 5:42 p.m., 1700-block of 56th Street: A complaint was received of youths drinking in the skate park. Police arrived to locate two men with open liquor in public.

Both were cautioned about drinking in a public park and the open liquor was dumped at the scene.

Neither were drivers.

• June 6, 11 p.m., 5500block of 12th Avenue: Police received report of an injured owl, and arrived to find owl on the roadway. Owl had likely been clipped by a vehicle when attempting to collect a nearby rat. Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (OWL) attended to collect the owl, which appeared stunned with no major injuries.

• June 7, 3:16 p.m., 5000block of Willow Springs Avenue: A complaint was made regarding two vehicles travelling 50 km/h in the complex which has a 20 km/h speed limit. As licence plates were pro-

vided, police were able to locate and speak to the drivers. Both indicated they were unaware of the limit, and agreed to slow down in the future.

LADNER

• June 4, 2:22 a.m., 7500-block of River Road: Police attempted to stop a speeding vehicle. Police activated emergency lights and sirens but the vehicle continued to accelerate.

The vehicle was later spotted pulled off the side of the road. The driver was arrested for dangerous driving and identified to have prohibited driving conditions.

• June 6, 9 a.m., 7000block of Highway 17: Police were conducting laser enforcement on the highway which has a speed limit of 80 km/h.

Laser confirmed speed at 132 km/h. The driver was charged with excessive speed and her vehicle was impounded for seven days.

Driver left in a taxi.

• June 7, 5:09 p.m., 4400block of Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant contacted police to pick

up his firearms and ammunition for destruction. Complainant turned over a shotgun, rifle and 50 rounds of ammunition, and signed a certificate authorizing their disposal.

• June 7, 9:46 a.m.: Complainant contacted Delta police to report an attempted fraud at an unknown branch of a major bank in Edmonton using a forged copy of an old cheque. No loss occurred as the bank did not cash the cheque.

Complainant was advised to contact Edmonton police to report the attempted fraud as the incident occurred in that department’s jurisdiction.

• June 8, 12:29 a.m., 3600-block of Deltaport Way: Police attended a two-vehicle crash. One vehicle had been travelling westbound, followed by another vehicle. The lead vehicle activated its hazard lights and attempted to make a U-turn, which resulted in a collision with the following vehicle. Both vehicles were severely damaged. One person received minor injuries.

Police donate recovered bicycles to kids in need The Delta Police Department continues to find ways to give back to the communities it serves.

Last Tuesday officers donated 18 bikes recovered by police and not re-claimed by their owners to R.E.C. for KIDS, a nonprofit organization that provides sports equipment to kids in need.

“When we recover lost or stolen bikes, we try to locate the owner, but most times the bikes have not been registered or reported lost/stolen,” said Const.

re we in store for the mother of all campaign promises?

I couldn’t help but think of that possibility after reading Delta MP Carla Qualtrough’s letter to Premier John Horgan with regards to a new crossing of the Fraser River.

Dated May 15 and included on this week’s Delta council agenda, the letter details how the Liberal MP was pleased to learn the region’s mayors and First Nations chiefs have reached a consensus on a new crossing, but the crux of the correspondence is in the fourth paragraph where she touches on the availability of federal funding for such projects. Qualtrough states the Liberal government has “committed significant funding” for these kinds of large-scale undertakings, adding that, in her opinion, a replacement of the George Massey Tunnel would fit such parameters.

You don’t even have to read between the lines to ascertain that Justin Trudeau’s Liberals would be willing to throw a substantial amount of money at the project, but the only hitch is there isn’t one for the feds to support because at this point all we’ve got is the provincial NDP government studying potential crossing options.

That exercise isn’t expected to be completed until the fall of next year, way too late for Liberal re-election purposes, which is presumably why Qualtrough is not only impressing upon Horgan the urgent need for a new crossing but the necessity to identify the project as a provincial priority. If he does so by this fall, I suspect a whopper of a campaign pledge — perhaps something in the half-billion-dollar range — would quickly follow.

A key member of Trudeau’s cabinet who’s looking to get re-elected in what’s traditionally been a right-of-centre riding, Qualtrough would get great mileage out of an announcement that provides “significant” federal dollars to address a traffic bottleneck that’s been the bane of commuters around here for decades. It would also take the age-old practice of using our money to buy our votes to new heights, making former Delta MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay’s preelection spending spree four years ago look like chump change.

The only question that appears to remain is whether there will be a crossing identified in time to be the recipient of the Liberals’ largesse.

It’s getting harder to believe what so-called experts say

ack in June of 2010 I wrote a letter to the Optimist concerning an investigation, accepted by Delta council, that concluded the black dust covering Tsawwassen was not coal dust or diesel particulate, but was actually insect or caterpillar droppings.

I’ve still not witnessed these hordes of caterpillars that invade our property but the black dust is still there so they must be nocturnal. But the “experts” and our council says its caterpillars so I guess I have to believe them.

In February of this year the Optimist reported that 30 dead ducks were found in a pond adjacent to the Tsatsu Shores condo complex near the ferry terminal in Tsawwassen.

Environment and Climate Change Canada was called in and two months later after an examination, attributed the ducks’ deaths to malnutrition.

All at the same time and in the same place? Delta is on the Pacific Flyway, where hundreds of thousands of birds of all types come to fatten up for their long journey north or south, so how could 30 ducks die of starvation at one time and all in the same place?

Now wait, if you believe the experts in the first story, perhaps the ducks ate a massive amount of those dusty caterpillars, lost their appetite and just couldn’t eat any more.

Speaking of Environment and Climate Change Canada, there was a letter in the May 23 edition of the Optimist indicating that Delta should declare a “climate emergency” which got me wondering what would make this necessary?

In my lifetime, I’ve lived through the world running out of oil, a predicted mini ice age, the collapse of the ozone layer, Y2K, the end of the Mayan calendar and global warming. All of these

were predicted by experts and all were wrong.

The Maldives have over half a million residents and the islands are an average of only 1.5 metres above sea level, and many of Holland’s folks live 6.5 meters below sea level.

When the Maldives are evacuated and the Dutch are moving to Germany, I might start to get concerned.

Yes, I’m a climate change disbeliever and my reason for feeling that way is because “experts” who can’t get tomorrow’s weather correct 50 per cent of the time are telling us of this great pending climate disaster and blaming the human population for it.

They never tell the public how much our crops and forests depend on carbon dioxide to grow, and they never mention the 100-plus volcanoes under the Antarctic and the dozens of volcanoes under the Arctic ice sheet that are spewing lava and super heated gas and water under the ice.

I’ve gotten very tired of the Baloney Diet.

Hearing shows there are better options for West Coast ports

Editor: Re: Mayor says risks too great to move forward with T2, June 6 I am very pleased to see Delta Mayor George Harvie express concern and opposition to the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s Terminal 2 proposal.

I attended most of the T2 review panel public hearings. More than two weeks of both general hearing sessions and topic specific sessions have now concluded. The panel now heads to Vancouver Island to hold community sessions, where First Nations will present their views and concerns, before returning to Vancouver to complete and close the public hearing.

Results from these hearings thus far can be summarized down to two fundamental questions: 1. Would the building

of T2 result in significant adverse environmental effects that cannot be mitigated? Answer: yes.

2. Are there locations elsewhere in B.C., other than Roberts Bank, that can provide all the container terminal capacity required to meet Canada’s trading needs, with much less environmental damage, without ever building T2? Answer: yes.

During the two-plus weeks of hearings the review panel received more than 50 presentations expressing concerns about the project. Most of these presentations were very specific. There were also many presentations from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and stakeholder groups. Generally stakeholder groups expressed support but were much more general and did not offer comments on environmental

issues.

The Environment and Climate Change Canada position regarding western sandpipers and shorebirds stated at the public hearing was as follows: “ECCC maintains that predicted project-induced changes to Roberts Bank constitute an unmitigable specieslevel risk to western sandpipers, and shorebirds more generally, due to the predicted disruption to the salinity regime that supports fatty acid production from biofilm.”

Several expert independent scientists challenged the non-peer reviewed science postulated by Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s. One summarized it this way: “From a scientific point of view, the 2019 Proponent Biofilm report cannot be used as evidence in support of proceeding with RBT2.”

Delta shows its true colours after flag vandalized

Editor: Re: Church’s pride flag vandalized, June 6 What do you fear?

Last week the rainbow flag at Ladner United Church was sprayed with black paint. I guess someone felt so much fear around what the flag represents they lashed out.

I am sorry for their fear.

I wish for no one to live in fear. Fear begets fear and

no one wins.

Last week we also remembered the 75th anniversary of D-Day and the soldiers who fought and died so that all can live without fear.

How can we honour their sacrifice? Maybe we can provide safe places for conversation, to talk about fears, to get to know each other and realize that we are all muddling through

day by day the best we can.

Four Winds proposal far different from comparisons

Editor: Re: Craft brewery brings a community together, letter to the editor, May 30 Kevin Klassen’s wellwritten letter in support of the relocation of Four Winds Brewing to the new proposed Southlands Village illustrates the passion of craft brewery enthusiasts. He paints an idyllic image of young, happy families, seniors and youth all drawn together by their shared love of craft beer, hanging about what he calls their “Third Place,” with only home and work closer to their hearts.

Klassen feels the local, negative response to the Four Winds proposal was “uninformed and ultimately irresponsible.” He tosses in “fear mongering” for good measure.

Klassen describes with obvious, almost religious, zeal the central role of several Lower Mainland and other craft breweries in their local residential communities, which apparently is the theme of his master’s thesis. He references 33 Acres Brewing in Vancouver, Persephone

Brewing near Gibsons, Townsite Brewing in Powell River and the breweries, at least four of them, located in Port Moody on “Brewers Row.” He claims the “size of the proposed [Four Winds] facility is in line with the breweries noted earlier and many others that are compatible with their residential neighbours.”

Unfortunately, the facilities cited by Klassen are neither comparable in size with the proposed Four Winds brewery, nor in residential neighbourhoods.

These other facilities are easily located on Google Maps, where you can determine their approximate size, as I have done with over 80 Lower Mainland craft breweries.

Klassen’s “comparable” facilities range between about 2,500 and 7,500 square feet, with most on the lower end of that range. The proposed new Four Winds building is about 30,000 square feet, with the variance application including two other industrial buildings comprising together about another 10,000 square feet.

With the brewery building, this comprises 50 per cent of the 80,000 square feet set aside in the original plan, not for commercial use and certainly not for industrial use, but for mixed residential-commercial use.

And, of course, none of the other breweries cited

by Klassen appear to be anywhere near as high as the proposed Four Winds building, which would be approximately the size of a typical supermarket.

But the differences between the Four Winds proposal for Southlands and Klassen’s comparable sites doesn’t end with building size. 33 Acres is located in the Mt. Pleasant district of Vancouver on 8th Avenue just west of Ontario Street.

It is in a large, busy commercial area extending from Broadway north all the way to False Creek.

Persephone Brewing is north of Gibsons off the Sunshine Highway, in a mostly forested area, with only four detached homes on large lots in sight of the brewery. Townsite Brewing is in Power River,

just a half block from the Catalyst Paper Mill.

And “Brewers Row” is on Murray Street in Port Moody, with a large mill and terminal facilities immediately to the northwest and a multi-line rail transportation corridor immediately to the south.

Neither the size, nor the location, of Klassen’s referenced breweries bear any resemblance at all to the Four Winds facility and the Southlands and Boundary Bay neighbourhood. The same can be said of the great majority of other craft breweries in the Lower Mainland.

Four Winds is a significantly larger facility.

It intends to expand production at Southlands.

Boundary Bay is a small, quiet residential neighbourhood of mostly detached homes. To this, Southlands, as originally proposed, will add additional housing options, including detached homes and townhomes.

The village is planned to consist of street level retail, with two-storey townhomes above. The Four Winds proposal

would consume half of that space, not just the commercial space, but the more affordable housing as well.

If Klassen would like to promote a very small craft operation in the shadow of a large paper mill, marine terminal or other heavy industrial facility, or in very lightly populated and forested areas on the Sunshine Coast, he has made the case for that, but not for siting Four Winds in Southlands/Boundary Bay. Not by a long shot.

Klassen objects to the words “manufacturing” and “industrial” in describing Four Winds’ brewing operations. He likens brewing odours to that of baked good and fruit, although to be fair, odour really exists only in the “nose of the inhaler” where opinions honestly differ.

I understand and respect Klassen’s reverence for craft brewing and his belief that brewing is art, not industry. Many share his passion. But for those for whom beer, craft or otherwise, is just a welcome and convivial relief

on a hot day, brewing on the Four Winds scale is an industrial activity, which is why it is so zoned in Delta.

I also do not share Klassen’s apparent belief that breweries, craft or otherwise, are necessarily the best choice as the focal point and ideal meeting venue — a kind of spiritual centre — for small, familyoriented communities, although brew pubs would likely be very welcome in Southlands. Four Winds is not a brew pub. Far from it.

Contrary to Klassen’s claims, I think most young families with small children will be very happy to locate in the new Southlands. The first question young parents hunting for a home in Southlands ask the real estate agent is unlikely to be: “Is there a large craft brewery nearby where I can take the children to meet friends?” They won’t feel disadvantaged to find there is no commercial brewery dominating the village, and many may well be understandably relieved.

People’s Party tabs Ireland to be its candidate in Delta Three are now in race for federal election in fall SANDOR GYARMATI

The People’s Party of Canada has announced that Angelina Ireland will be its candidate in Delta in this fall’s federal election.

Ireland is a long-time local resident and is involved in many community organizations, including the Ladner Rotary Club, Delta Hospice Society and Sacred Heart Parish, a news release announcing her candidacy states.

The release also notes Ireland holds a master’s of arts degree in political science from Carleton University and has been an accountant for the past 20 years. For 15 years she has been an entrepreneur providing client accounting services to small businesses.

“The time has come to respect the taxpayer, stand up for families, defend our borders, create wellpaying jobs and celebrate our country. Together we will build a Canada where

taxes are low, government is limited, opportunity is unlimited, freedom is honoured, and people are put before special interest groups,” she said.

The news release adds the People’s Party of Canada represents the opinions and perspectives of thousands of Canadians across the country who believe traditional political parties have ignored citizens in favour of political posturing and pandering.

The party notes it will provide many opportunities to meet Ireland and

members of the riding association to discuss policies.

Ireland had been a member of the Delta Conservatives and had sought the nomination to be its candidate, but a few weeks ago withdrew and left the party.

The Conservatives have yet to name a candidate, although Tanya Corbet announced last month she’s seeking the nomination.

The riding association notes the nomination period has opened and several others have applied. A candidate is expected to be chosen in six weeks.

Incumbent Delta MP Carla Qualtrough, a key member of Justin Trudeau’s cabinet, is seeking re-election for the Liberals.

The Green Party of Canada named Craig DeCraene as its Delta candidate.

The NDP has yet to name a candidate.

The federal election will be held Oct. 21.

That’s what Dr. Brian Ruddy said when asked what drew him to dentistry back when he was preparing to graduate from high school in Montreal during the early 1970s.

A notable linebacker who was recruited to play university football in the Maritimes, Dr. Ruddy ended up needing wisdom teeth removed and contracted a rare condition that affected his optic nerve. The treatment meant spending most of the summer of 1971 in hospital, ruling out the immediate jump to the east coast. But it proved to be a pivotal point in his life. “I was impressed by the whole medical/dental system, and while I was in hospital McGill University came to recruit me,” he says. “And since a good number of football players at McGill were studying dentistry, it led me to become more interested in it as a profession.”

Today, Dr. Ruddy has brought his skills and experience back to Tsawwassen as an associate at South Delta Family Dental Care. He had his own practice in Tsawwassen in the 1980s through to the early 1990s before moving to Calgary where he set up shop in that city’s downtown until 2010. Following that, Dr. Ruddy came back to B.C. and worked in the Okanagan, where he also put his private pilot’s license to use, flying around the province tending to patients.

For the past three years, he worked on Vancouver Island commuting from his home in Tsawwassen, until the opportunity came late last year to relocate back to Tsawwassen and join Dr. Johnathan Brown and the rest of the staff at South Delta Family Dental Care.

Dr. Ruddy says he takes great pride in using his skills to provide treatment solutions for patients, all in a casual and relaxed atmosphere.

“A mentor of mine in dental school once told me that I had a gift,” Dr. Ruddy says. “He said that I had good hands and I took what I did seriously, but I didn’t take myself too seriously.”

That’s one reason why he prefers staff and patients call him by his first name. “Dentistry is a craft I really enjoy and know that I’ve done my best to help a patient who has left the surgery better than when they came in,” he says.

I knew the answer, given that I know the husband’s TV-viewing habits, since I happen to be married to the husband.

He watches golf. He watches James Bond films non-stop. He watches the NFL channel.

“No,” he said. “I don’t.”

As I say, I knew the answer. He is also out of the loop.

Breaking Bad? Um, again, I’m in the dark.

Seems like a compelling title for a show, but not sure what it means.

Breaking Bad? Does this mean the characters have been otherwise good people who have gone to the dark side? I can only guess.

But really, I gather than while I have been fixated on Ellen and Fire Masters and Wheel of Fortune and The National, most folks out there have been doing the Bad thing — and commenting about it constantly on Facebook.

“Do you have any idea what Downton Abbey is all about?” I asked the husband. “Seems to be big.”

“No idea,” said the husband, flipping from one sports channel to another.

“Do you think there’s a typo in the name of the show?” I asked. “Should it really be Downtown Abbey?”

“No idea,” he repeated.

“Could you get me a beer?”

I got him a beer.

“Then there’s that show called Orange is the New Black,” I continued.

“What’s that about?”

The husband took a swig of his bevvie.

“The Seahawks have released Doug Baldwin,” he said. “I’m golfing at 7:30 tomorrow.”

I took that to mean he did not know how orange turned into black — or mauve or emerald green, for that matter. Really.

How does orange turn into black any more than white turns into puce? It just doesn’t happen, right?

But that’s just me. I know next to nothing about the top-rated shows.

The final leg of the 2019 Special Olympics BC Law Enforcement Torch Run made its way through Delta last Friday to a celebration barbecue at Delta police headquarters in Ladner.

DPD continues to be a strong supporter of Special Olympics BC and throughout the week Const. Jeremy Pearce, S/ Sgt. Ciaran Feenan, Const.

Jen West and Insp. Deb McLeod joined other law enforcement officers and athletes to run throughout the Lower Mainland.

“Delta has had the

honour of hosting the last leg. It was my pleasure to be part of the run,” said DPD deputy Chief Norm Lipinski.

Since 1990 the Law Enforcement Torch Run has raised more than $4 million for Special Olympics BC. Dan Howe from Special Olympics BC spoke of the commitment from all involved and how this year’s run was even more significant as it marks the 50th anniversary of Special Olympics around the world.

McLeod, who has been involved through the DPD for 20 years, took part in her final run as she is soon

retiring. She was honoured with a special recognition from Delta Special Olympics.

McLeod in turn also honoured the many community businesses and supporters, presenting special recognition to Leslie Abramson from the Tsawwassen Rotary Club, which served up the postevent barbecue.

Over the years DPD has helped raise more than a quarter million dollars, including more than $5,500 alone last Friday.

Delta Special Olympics athlete Kim Davies spoke of the impacts sport and competing has had on her life.

Bouquets of pink and white balloons, a gourmet cake shaped into the number 100, champagne and best wishes from Queen Elizabeth welcomed Elinor Sanders on June 5 as The Wexford residents gathered to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Sanders was born and raised in Swift Current, Sask. in the latter stages of the First World War. In the span of 100 years she would experience the Great Depression, marry her college sweetheart George Lentsch and travel across Canada as they brought four children into the world. They would settle in Ladner to raise their family and enjoy the B.C. coastline. Following the death of her husband in 1975, and while in her late 50s, she learned how to paint, eventually becoming a prolific artist. She

Love eventually returned to her life and following her marriage to Bert Sanders they spent

the next 33 years golfing and wintering in their beloved Maui.

At age 99, she moved to The Wexford in Tsawwassen. For her birthday celebration, her family joined her new family at The Wexford to celebrate a life well lived and to tuck away yet another memory of this remarkable woman.

A foursome will take to the links of the Beach Grove Golf Club next week in support of the ALS Society of BC. Long-time supporters of the PGA of BC Golfathon for ALS, Beach Grove head professional Brent Derrheim will be joined by assistant pro Jordan Rodda and members Jeff Norris and Jon Hwang. They will golf from sunrise to sunset on Thursday, June 20 to raise funds and awareness for the important cause in the 14th annual event.

Derrheim was one of the first from Beach Grove to take on the challenge many years ago, while club pros Shaun Lundy and Cory Rudston-Brown have followed in his footsteps the past few years.

This year will be the first time members from the club will participate on the course, although as Derrheim points out, the membership support over the years has been fantastic in everything from fundraising to supporting the golfers on the course with refreshments and encouragement.

“They will likely play five to six rounds, but they want to walk. Jordan and I will be in carts so we can get in as many rounds as possible,” said Derrheim.

“This year is going to be no different in terms of the membership support.

Everyone gets behind this cause as it has touched the lives of so many members here, so that’s why the participation level is really high.”

Derrheim said they hope to raise at least $15,000. Donations can be made at: www.golfathonforals.com or at the pro shop.

“We want to encourage more online donations because you can track the total,” said Rodda. “I’ve never done a golf-a-thon before. I’ve done other fundraisers for other causes. I was around last year when Shaun did it, so I saw what he went through, but I think we’re ready.”

Proceeds from the Golfathon for ALS provide crucial support services to ALS patients and their families, friends and caregivers.

Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Thomas Keeley and I am a Lutheran pastor serving Benediction Lutheran Church in Tsawwassen.

It is indeed an honour to be asked to write for the Minister’s Minute.

When “Lutheran” comes to mind, what do you think of?

For many, it is Martin Luther, the 16th century Augustinian monk, who ignited a religious revolution by pounding his 95 Theses on the church door in Wittenberg, Germany on Oct. 31, 1517.

While the emergence of what has become known as the “Lutheran Church,” as a denomination, certainly has a dramatic history, Lutheran Christianity

was gifted by God to see what the Bible plainly teaches — that we are not saved or made righteous by our works or efforts, but only by what Christ has done for us on the cross (Romans 3 and 4). This is the gospel — the Good News of Jesus Christ!

Though Lutherans have certainly not been, and are not, the only Christians to confess “Grace alone through faith alone,” the Lutherans were the first to seek to reform the church by emphasizing the centrality of this teaching — what some call the doctrine upon which the church stands or falls.

I look forward to discussing aspects of the Lutheran perspective in coming articles.

Jazz show

A fundraising concert for the South Delta Jazz Festival is set for Friday, June 14. The evening will feature jazz standards and original material from festival faculty.

Presented by the Delta Community School, the South Delta Jazz Festival runs July 2 to 6.

The Loades of Music band will be playing at Petra’s by L’Aromas in Tsawwassen on Thursday, June 20 at 2 p.m. The free concert will be approximately one hour and all are invited to come and listen to some very good concert band music.

Teen walks red carpet at Cannes

Zarina Sterling stars as child bride in short film that premiered at French festival IAN JACQUES

It’s a breakthrough role for a promising actress and aspiring filmmaker from Tsawwassen.

Grade 10 student Zarina Sterling, who attends South Delta Secondary and the Delta Film Academy, plays the lead in the new short film Child Bride, which recently premiered at the Cannes Film Festival.

Based on a true story, Child Bride tells the tale of a child bride who is forced to sacrifice her childhood for her family to survive.

Her wedding night doesn’t go as planned.

Sterling portrays the child bride and at the age of 15, is the same age as the actual character.

Director/producer/writer Mostafa Keshvari, who has won numerous awards for his feature-length film Unmasked, says Child Bride tells an important story.

“The real child bride wanted to escape her fate, but as she tried to do this, she killed her husband.

The authorities catch her and she eventually was executed a few months ago. I was writing this script while this was going on,” he said. “When she was executed I thought I now can’t save her, but I can save other child brides by sharing this story.”

Filming took place in Tsawwassen and the surrounding area in January.

“A lot of sponsors helped us to make the movie at a very little cost.

Everyone involved is from B.C. telling this international story,” he said. “We are now sending this to as many festivals as possible to raise awareness. The reception at Cannes was really good. We were the only film with this story.

Zarina’s acting is what really made the movie. She is the same age. Having a minor to play this role with all the violence is challenging, but she did an amazing job.

“The film is hard to watch, but we wanted to make it shocking to people, authentic and to tell the true story. There are 12 million child brides around the world. We are hoping this film will shock

people enough to do something about it.”

Sterling said she was honoured to play the role.

“I auditioned and when I got the role I was shocked and surprised, but to be able to play such a strong character was quite a humbling experience,” she said. “It was a character that had to go through so much.”

Sterling, who is in her third year in the film acad-

emy, wants to create her own films one day.

She said walking the red carpet at Cannes was an unforgettable experience.

“It was incredible to be able to go to that,” she said. “Seeing famous people — Willem Dafoe, Sylvester Stallone, I met and spoke with Quentin Tarantino, gave me lots of inspiration. It was incredible to have that experience.”

It’s about raising awareness and money for a disease that many know little about.

Tsawwassen’s Lindsay McCallum and her family know the battle against multiple sclerosis all too well. This incurable and degenerative enemy sees more than 100,000 diagnoses every year with one in two Canadians personally affected by this mysterious and debilitating disease.

McCallum was so young when her father was diagnosed that she has no memory of him being able to walk without a limp.

Challenged by frustration, fear and sheer determination, she took the steps her father could no longer take by standing up and taking action to end MS. In 2012, McCallum’s Miles for MS took its first strides towards raising $30,000 to help those suffering with the disease and to fund the research, prevention, treatment and

She and her family vowed to continue to honour her father’s legacy by organizing their seventh walk through her residential neighbourhood of Tsawwassen on Sunday,

“The main thing is to raise awareness. Delta has never really had a locallyorganized run like this,” she said. “In the past we have really done this with family and friends, but now we want this to be a full community event.”

“I was just at Cliff Drive along with another MS volunteer and spoke with the students. We talked about the walk and about MS and one of the women there had MS,” said McCallum. “Afterwards she thanked me for the presentation. That one person made the presentation worth it. My goal is to make this an annual community walk so that we can extend the support and extend the awareness around it.”

The five-kilometre, kid-friendly walk starts at 9 a.m. with the route beginning and ending at Cliff Drive Elementary.

The Grouse Grind is a challenge at the best of times, so imagine trying to climb the popular North Shore trail while sevenand-a-half-months pregnant?

That’s exactly what Hilary Spires is going to do as she tackles the Grouse Grind Challenge on June 21 in support of BC Children’s Hospital.

“You have from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. at night to fit in as many Grouse Grinds as you can on the longest day of the year,” she said.

“Normally during the summer I would have a pretty hefty race schedule, but seeing this year as I’m pregnant, I thought I would give back instead and do something that is still a physical challenge, but a little safer than a larger distance run.”

Spires has climbed the Grouse Grind on numerous occasions, but has yet to participate in the Grouse Grind Challenge as she typically has competed in other races around the time of the annual event.

She recently completed four trips up the Grouse Grind in a training day and certainly noticed a few differences from past experiences.

“Without being pregnant my fastest time is 38 minutes. At seven months pregnant, 52 minutes was the fastest I could get up there, so it’s a significant difference,” she said.

It was still safe and you have to run up in a little more of an upright position than I normally would, but you can use hiking poles, so that will help on the day of.”

The Tsawwassen woman said she’s had a surprising number of friends with children who have received care at BC Children’s, which is extra motivation for her to raise money for the hospital.

“They do such an excellent job and everyone who has been there has told me it is such a special place,” she said.

Spires recently completed the Sun Mountain 50-Mile event, an 80-kilometre race in May. She finished 39th out of

101 female competitors despite being six months pregnant.

“Normally I would have liked to finish among the top, but in that condition, I just went slow and I was careful,” she said. “I work with midwives and all my family are so supportive of competing and staying active and doing what I love. I wanted to set an example that as an athlete you don’t have to take a break and not be active. The feedback I have received from other women has been amazing.”

Spires hopes to do eight to 10 trips up the Grouse Grind on June 21 and raise a few thousand dollars.

A beautifully-illustrated history of pioneer life in South Delta and the early history of both Ladner and St. Stephen’s United churches is now available for purchase.

A Heart for God in the Heart of the Village has been put together by Ken Atkey (posthumously) and Catherine Bone (wife of now retired Rev. Jim Short).

The release of the book coincided with the anniversary of the United Church of Canada, which marked its 94th year on June 10.

Bone explained that when the restoration of the church took place in 2012, lots of history was unveiled. Photos were taken and the idea of a historical look at the churches was suggested.

Atkey had already compiled years of research, notes and stories, but passed away days before the church re-opened.

“Ken wrote a lot about the area and it became evident that this should be a book about the purpose of this congregation and not singularly about this building,” said Bone. “I wanted to honour Ken’s writing and the history of the ministry of this church.

It was also my way to say thank-you to Ladner United as Jim and I leave Ladner United after 18 years.”

Marion said she is pleased how the book came together.

Rogers said there are a lot of threads that tie this book together with others that have been written.

Jog for a Jug offers cool reward

The 38th edition of the Jog for a Jug is set for this Saturday in Point Roberts.

The local fun run is organized by the RunInn Delta with all proceeds going to local charity.

“When we took over the race 12 years ago it was a great chance for us to help give back to the community,” said RunInn Delta owner Kevin Ridley.

“We are a big believer in supporting local community and when we first

got involved with the race we donated all proceeds to the Hannah’s Heroes Foundation, which was a local charity helping kids with brain stem cancer.

Since then we have helped out Kidsport Delta and this year we are proud to have Deltassist as our local charity of choice.”

Ridley said Mark Schoeffel of Hollis Wealth has also come on board as a presenting sponsor. The company will be donating

$2,000.

The Jog for a Jug is an 11.2-kilometre fun run or walk through Point Roberts with the start and finish at Kiniski’s Reef Tavern. The race is followed by a barbecue provided by the Reef with music and prizes.

Breanne Gallagher will step into the spotlight one more time as a South Delta Sun Devil except it won’t be in an athletic arena.

Gallagher will be teaming up with Madison Huehn on June 25 to deliver the valedictory address at SDSS’s commencement ceremony.

“I haven’t written anything yet but I’m definitely going to be talking about soccer,” she smiled.

Tears were flowing when she wrapped up her high school sports career on a sun-baked turf field at Cloverdale Athletic Park after helping the Sun Devils finish fifth at the recent B.C. AAA Championships.

Gallagher, along with graduating teammate Emily Birarda, are two of just six players in the program’s rich history to play all five years on the team.

She wasted little time in making an impression, scoring some key goals in the Sun Devils’ run to a bronze medal on home turf during her Grade 9 year. The clutch scoring continued over the next three seasons and included another third place finish in 2018.

“Emily and I made it provincials for five years in a row and it’s really fortunate we got to experience that,” said Gallagher. “It was a new group every single year and a new challenge.

“It’s been a heck of a journey and it’s so fortunate we got to play all these games and experience all the things we did with the coaches and the girls. You learn something new every day. I’m not sad it’s over, just not getting to experience it all over again with the same girls.”

The pair are also winding down their club season as members of Coastal F.C. of the B.C. Premier Soccer League. The highlight of that run was capturing the U17 Canadian Championship on home soil last October. Gallagher happened to score the game-winning goal in the final against Quebec.

“It was one of the coolest things I ever experienced. Not just the game and tournament but all the preparation and coaching that went into it,” continued Gallagher.

“Months before we all sat down at our first practice and talked about our goals. Then to go out and accomplish them. Quebec was an amazing team that had several national team players.”

The next chapter of her soccer career will take her to the unofficial destination of top recent SDSS athletes — the University of Calgary.

Already featuring a number of former Sun Devil football standouts, she made her commitment to the Dinos midway through her Grade 11 year.

“It was already the top choice for me academically then I looked into the soccer team,” she said.

“They have had tons of success and is a kind of program that is on the rise. I am super excited to be part of that.”

It will be a homecoming to the province she spent her infant years before her family left Edmonton for Tsawwassen in 2004.

That’s when her father Ian accepted a position with the Vancouver Giants as strength and conditioning coach and to run the Delta Hockey Academy.

Hockey has always been a huge part of her life — watching her older brothers Brendan and Nolan play. Brendan now stars for the

Breanne briefly played organized hockey but followed her sister Erin’s path and focused on other sports. She played rep fastpitch and won a provincial silver medal with the Sun Devils junior volleyball team in her Grade 10 year.

“I played hockey for one year and realized I was better at other things,” Gallagher laughed. “We

were always around the rink and we had one in our backyard in Edmonton as it was part of our home culture. But our parents encouraged us to try other things and see what we might be good at it. Erin also danced and Nolan and Brendan played football “I always played more than one sport. You can do it as long as you have balance and my parents have really helped with that.”

Delta gymnasts win medals at Canadian Championships Delta Gymnastics members Makenzie Grant and Astarte Garnett returned home with medals from the recent Canadian Championships in Ottawa.

Competing in the JO9 and JO10 levels respectively, Grant, 12, and Garnett, 15, each achieved bronze in the floor event. The medals were well deserved as both are powerful tumblers, awesome dancers and have great amplitude in

their leaps and jumps.

Delta Gymnastics Superstar and Gymnaestrada Coordinator Jenn Watts is responsible for the excellent choreography for both routines.

The six-day meet was held at Carlton Universit and brought together Canada’s best national level and highperformance gymnasts, from novice to senior Olympic level athletes.

Delta Islanders will be looking to rebound on Saturday night after falling 19-4 to the Victoria Shamrocks in B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League action.

The lacrosse community will pay tribute to a former player and coach at the inaugural Thomas Haydon Day on Saturday at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

The Ladner native and Delta firefighter lost his battle with pancreatic cancer last October at the age of 36. Now an evening of events in his honour have been centred around a B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League regular season game between the Delta Islanders and Burnaby Lakers at 7 p.m.

An hour long alumni game will get underway at 4:30 p.m. It will feature a number players who came through the organization as well as Haydon’s family, lifelong friends and teammates.

Players committed to the game include: Jason Northey, Jim Nishiyama, Harry Bining, Gary Bining, Trent Smalley, Greg Guichon, Adam Haydon, Andrew McBride, Russell Marynowski, Adam Smith, Cody Blake, Matt Zinn, Scott Boyle, Dave Yee and Jamie Bates.

An outdoor barbecue will run from 6 to 8 p.m. and a beer garden inside the LLC from 6 to 10 p.m.

All proceeds from these two events will be going to pancreatic cancer research on behalf of the Delta Islanders and Haydon Family and Friends.

The inaugural Thomas Haydon Memorial Award will be handed out in the second intermission of the junior “A” game. It comes with a $2,500 scholarship.

The winner will receive a custom Haydon axe, reflecting his career as a firefighter. A larger version of the award is expected to be on permanent display inside the LLC. Haydon played and coached lacrosse in Ladner for more than 20 years. He was also the first captain of the inaugural Delta Junior “A” Islanders in 2002.

His playing career included helping the Ladner Pioneers win the President’s Cup national senior “B” championship in 2004.

Tier 1 Junior B Islanders topple Victoria for fifth straight win

A big seven goal second period powered the Delta Junior “B” Tier One Islanders to their fifth straight win on Sunday night at the Ladner Leisure Centre.

Keegan Kozack had seven points, including four goals, as the Islanders produced an impressive 11-5 victory over the second place Victoria Shamrocks to improve to 8-4-0 on the season. They also

pulled within four points of Victoria with two games in hand.

The game was tied at 2-2 when the Islanders took control by scoring eight of the next nine goals. Kozack’s hat trick led the outburst while B.C. Junior “B” Tier One Lacrosse League scoring leader Ben McDonald had a goal and an assist. Lucas Hooymans, Quinn Ridley and Devyn Zunti,

with a pair, had the other goals.

Peyton Hooper rounded out the Islanders’ scoring while Ashton Leclair made 35 saves.

The result came two nights after Delta rallied for an 11-10 win over the Burrards in Maple Ridge.

The Islanders erased a 9-7 deficit with four unanswered third period goals.

McDonald led the comeback with a pair and finished the night with five.

Zunti added a goal and four assists.

Peyton Hooper chipped in with a pair while singles went to Max Yingling, Jackson Tutkaluke and Kozack. Leclair made 49 saves.

Delta returns to action on Friday when the Burnaby Lakes visit at 8:30 p.m.

It is with great sadness we announce the untimely loss of our wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandma and friend.

Diane was an incredibly kind and quietly determined person who touched the lives of many.

She loved to play the piano and make jewelry and she enjoyed many years travelling with her husband and doting on her three grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brother Charles, daughter-in-law Cheryl and brother-in-law Ken. She will be deeply missed by all whose lives she touched, her loving husband of 55 years, Neil, sister Marnie and brotherin-law Jerry; sister-in-law Joan; daughter Kathy; son David; son-in-law Scott, grandchildren Riley, Jenna and Danielle, niece Donna, nephews Michael and Ben (Nikki), great nephew Kyle and great niece Ruby. The family would like to acknowledge and thank the amazing staff at Richmond Hospital, including Dr. Yun who took such excellent care of her. LIVESEY, Catherine Scott March 29, 1920 - June 5, 2019 Catherine passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 5, in her 100th year at the Good Samaritan Delta View Care Centre in Delta, BC. Her father, Captain James Watson, wounded in the Great War serving with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, met his wife, nurse Margaret Boyd, in his native Scotland. They were married in Glasglow in 1917, then moved to his home in Edmonton, Alberta, where Catherine was born three years later. The family moved to Saanichton on Vancouver Island, where Catherine graduated from Mt. Newton High School.

She followed in her mother’s footsteps, graduating in 1945 from the School of Nursing, Royal Columbian Hospital, New Westminster.

In marrying Ernest (Ernie) Edward Livesey in 1964, she discovered and embraced a ready-made family with his daughters Diana (Jacques) and Joan, granddaughters Corinne (Chris) and Yannick (Tim), and great grandchildren Robyn, Audrey, Dominique and Felix. A seasoned traveller before marriage, she introduced Ernie to worldwide trips and cruises, including the Old Country to meet her extensive Scottish relations. She joined him in all the extra-curricular interests that rounded out his long career in teaching— gardening, bridge, and dancing. She loved entertaining and cooking; her freezer was always stocked with cookies and pastries and her granddaughters loved her shortbread! She continued this after Ernie passed in 1987. Our thanks go out to the care team in Cascades at Delta View for the warmth and exceptional care and to the staff at Kin Village where she lived happily for 10 years. Gratitude also to Richard (Luc), her godson, to extended family Dale and Ron, and to her friend Sandra for their care and support through the latter years of decreasing mobility, which Catherine bore with courage and determination. She will be remembered for her infectious laugh, great sense of fun, and her intelligence. Her cremated remains will be interred at St. Stephen’s Anglican Church, Saanichton, on Vancouver Island, with those of her husband and parents.

A private gathering is to be held at a later date.

Walter was born in Peno, Alberta on July 29, 1925 to parents Annie (Kinash) and Peter Melnyk.

In 1929 they moved to their new farm in Warspite, Alberta. Walter married Emma Allen of Waskatenau, Alberta in June of 1955, then moved to Thorsby, Alberta to start his own family.

Walter and his family later moved to Calgary, then moved to Tsawwassen, BC on the west coast in 1970.

Walter left behind his two children, Debi and Brad and three grandchildren Melanie, Shaelynn and Braydon. He also left behind his sister Helen Holguin of Honolulu, Hawaii and was also predeceased by his loving wife Emma of 63 years and sisters Nancy Klufas and Olga Tronnes of Edmonton, Alberta.

Walter was always there for his family, friends and his community. He served as a Lions Club member for 65 years, most recently with the North Surrey and Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Clubs.

He was also an active member of the Delta Stroke Recovery Society. Walter followed in his father’s, grandfather’s and great-grandfather’s footsteps and was very successful in the hotel and hospitality industry. Walter had a great sense of humor and made people laugh with his jokes, comedy routines and skits most notably the story of “Little Red Riding Hood.”

God needed him to be together once again with his lifetime partner and best friend Emma, as well to make others laugh up in Heaven. Although we miss you so very much, we know you have not left us, but are now looking over and taking care of us from above alongside of Mom in Heaven.

Thank you for being the best Dad and Grampa!

Sue Emily Watson graciously and peacefully left this world on May 4, 2019. Sue was born on February 16, 1943, in Vancouver, BC, to loving parents Alan and Florence Watson. She is predeceased by her sister Sandra Brigola (2013).

Sue is survived by her brother Paul (Doreen). She will be sadly missed by friends and family. Sue leaves behind 3 children and 6 grandchildren: John (Kayla, Randy), Devon (Maria), Heather (Jordan, Kelsey, Allison) and Scott (Lynne), Maya. We celebrate that Sue is now free from the devastating effects of Rheumatoid Arthritis. The words of: courage, strength, tenacity, and unbound Spirit are aptly used. She is most lovingly remembered; for her intellect, her laughter, her sense humour, her joyful spirit, and her love and dedication to all that she pursued. Her life made rich by her family, her love of fabric and textiles, weaving, travelling, reading, home renovation, gardening, and her delightful way of thinking, best described as “way outside of the box”.
