Giant pain for lacrosse teams Dry floor users upset as junior hockey team’s lease with city keeps ice in arena SANDOR GYARMATI

The first-place Vancouver Giants could be starting a long playoff run, which has the local lacrosse community once again crying foul.

“I don’t know why lacrosse, which is such a big part of the community and the history of Delta, is being so disrespected,” said John Burr, president of the Ladner Pioneers senior lacrosse club. “Our access to dry floor time and our season is getting squeezed at both ends more and more.”

The Giants, who practice at the Ladner Leisure Centre but play their games at the Langley Events Centre, have a deal with the City of Delta for exclusive use of the leisure centre into early May, which would cut into the season for lacrosse, ball hockey and other dry floor users.

Burr said they’ve been told the Giants will be leaving the leisure centre during spring break, however, the city is giving the junior hockey team ice time at the South Delta Recreation Centre, which means that facility won’t be available for lacrosse.

Delta Junior Islanders president Darcy Phillips said the contract is a poor one for the city, but especially for local users groups, noting it’s a case of

Matt Taylor, vicepresident of Delta Minor Lacrosse, agreed, saying he doesn’t understand why the Giants can’t have practices at Tilbury Ice, Langley or elsewhere instead of ice sitting empty for most of the day while squeezing out other users.

“I don’t care if you’re the Canucks or whoever.

It’s a public facility that should be used by other public user groups,” said Taylor, adding they met with city officials who kept pointing out the city has a contractual obligation.

Giants are to be provided with exclusive access to the ice rink at the leisure centre for a period of two consecutive hours each day from Monday to Friday from Sept. 1 to the end of the Western Hockey League playoff season. The Giants also get use of the centre in August to hold training camp and exhibition games.

Parks, recreation and culture director Ken Kuntz said the city is working on trying to accommodate all users.

“Delta has a contract to provide ice to the Giants during their playoffs. The city is upholding that obli-

gation. Staff have worked with the Giants and all dry floor sport users to minimize any impact. A number of alternatives for lacrosse, ball hockey and roller hockey are being considered by the groups, including the city purchasing arena time in neighbouring communities. The clubs are currently reviewing the alternatives and we hope to have something finalized by early next week,” said Kuntz via email.

Saying over 400 junior and senior lacrosse players in Delta are being impacted, Burr complained it’s difficult to foster and grow

the sport locally when told they should be playing in other communities.

Noting the lease means the Pioneers will never again be able to host a President’s Cup national tournament in their home arena, Burr said they’ve also been told the Giants are taking over the leisure centre at the beginning of August, which squeezes lacrosse further if teams have their own playoffs.

He said it’s to accommodate a hockey school held by the Giants, which should get local taxpayers more upset how a public facility is being used to accommodate a for-profit business.

In 2015, Delta entered a new lease with the Giants.

It was an in-camera decision by Delta council to ink a 10-year deal with team owner Ron Toigo.

Lacrosse officials said they are upset user groups were not included in those discussions.

In 2005, the municipality entered into the first lease with Toigo to move the junior hockey club’s training facility to the leisure centre.

The Giants at the time paid approximately $1 million toward an addition to the leisure centre, which included a weight room on the top floor open to the public as well as space for the hockey team on the ground floor. The Giants also got exclusive ice time.

Three-year-old girl is killed in accident on Delta farm IAN JACQUES

The BC Coroners Service is continuing to investigate an accident on a South Delta farm last Wednesday that killed a young girl.

Few details are known about the tragedy, but through the Delta Fire

Department the Optimist has learned that it appears a three-year-old child was involved in a farming accident.

“It appears an older tractor tire fell on the child. I understand that it had been leaning up against a barn,” said deputy fire Chief Brad Watson.

“I’m not sure what hap-

pened or how it happened — I can’t comment on that.”

Wilson said the call came in just after 5 p.m.

Firefighters who responded to the call administered first aid until paramedics arrived, he said.

“On the record, I can tell you we are in the early stages of a fact-finding investigation in the Lower Mainland region involving the death of a young girl on Wednesday,” spokesperson Andy Watson said.

“The Coroners Services’

Smokers are forced indoors at Ladner townhouse complex IAN JACQUES

A resident at Ladner’s Lynden Court townhouse complex says it’s crazy that people are being forced inside their units if they want to smoke.

The resident, who contacted the Optimist but would not provide her name for fear of reprisal from others in the complex, is taking issue with the way a civic bylaw is being enforced.

She said residents received two notifications last month from Metro Vancouver, which manages the 48B Avenue family rental complex.

“The first one [notification] just banned smoking

by your front door. It was prompted by complaints but I’m not sure by who,” she said.

“The neighbours I’ve spoken to are extremely upset because they don’t want to smoke indoors around their children, and also ruin all their belongings with smoke. I’m concerned because my children often play with other neighbour children in their homes, and I don’t want them to be exposed to that.”

She said she feels it’s ridiculous to rent a place with a backyard and be told you cannot smoke out there because other people might smell it.

Ulryke Weissgerber, Metro Vancouver’s manager of housing area operations, said Metro is just following City of Delta bylaws.

“Initially, I agreed with them [residents] and generally speaking when we have had issues about second-hand smoke both municipalities as well as residential tenancy has agreed that the balcony, courtyard or backyard is part of the residential premises that are rented

and if the tenancy agreement speaks to the fact it is a no smoking property then there is some teeth in it and if not, my understanding has been people have the right to smoke,” said Weissgerber.

“Some of the people at Lynden Court are of this opinion, others are saying no, municipal bylaw says you cannot smoke in any outdoor area, so City of Delta bylaws have told us that their bylaw is very restrictive and residents can only smoke in their units. We have no alternative but to adhere to municipal bylaws.”

Delta council made amendments to the city’s smoking bylaw last August.

“Having that feeling that the community supports you means so much. We live in a beautiful and loving community. I think the community is more aware of the homelessness that we have out there. I’m really overwhelmed by our community support.”

Delta’s extreme weather shelter had a recordbreaking year.

Located at Ladner United Church, the shelter was recently deactivated after opening for 39 consecutive days.

“Since the beginning of November, we have had 88 openings,” said shelter coordinator Shirley Baker.

“It’s all weather dependent of course and we have had some very tough weather this year. In that timeframe we have seen 175 physical bodies come in and use the shelter. Whether that is repeat people, it doesn’t matter. That is just 175 bodies that were not on the street.”

Baker said volunteers have been amazing.

“The night staff, in particular, because they are there all night long and now that we have a washer and a dryer, volunteers can provide the cleaning

Opening up a dialogue was one of the themes at a pair of forums last week that explored the issue of racism and hate in the community.

Held in North Delta on March 13 and in South Delta on March 14, the forums were hosted by the Delta Organizing against Racism and Hate Committee. The events brought together committee members, school district and city officials, Delta police and interested community members to share experiences, insights and awareness.

“We need to see more and more people opening up their heart, their mind and their ears,” said committee member Rhiannon Bennett in her opening remarks at Thursday’s forum at Ladner’s Harris Barn. “This is not a comfortable thing to come together and talk about. As a person of colour — as an Indigenous woman — it

causes me a great deal of angst when I’m the only one in the room to talk about this. I want all of us here to hold this space and listen to the truth that is presented here by all our speakers, so we can be of one heart and one mind and we can work together.

“There is division in our community,” said the former school trustee. “There is hate and racism in our community and it’s up to each of us here to work on addressing that. Pointing out that racism and that hate isn’t being divisive or hateful. Nothing is going to get better unless we have these difficult conversations and work on solutions together.”

According to the committee, Delta is now the 33rd community in the province to host a forum.

The committee is part of the B.C. Anti-Racism Network, which was established in 2001.

“Delta is diverse in many ways, but unfortunately, where there is diversity there is the pos-

sibility of misunderstanding, miscommunication, disagreement and conflict, harassment and even violence,” said Mayor George Harvie. “We are very fortunate in Delta to have skilled and trained police, teachers and community workers to identify and address these issues for the benefit of all members of our community.

“Knowledge is the first tool against violence of any source and it’s through evenings like tonight where we can come together and leverage ways to make it stop.”

Delta School District superintendent Doug Sheppard said it’s important to address any issues in the most appropriate way.

“There are issues and we want a better community, which is why these discussions are so important and vital. We want to continue the great work of this committee and ensure our role in making this a better community for all of us.”

Will red give way to blue in Delta?

Is Delta going to stay red or will it revert to blue?

Has Trudeaumania run its course? Will the new People’s Party of Canada become a vote-splitting difference?

Those are just some of the intriguing questions facing the riding of Delta as the next federal election is just seven months away.

The 2015 election was a game changer in a lot of ways as the newly reconfigured riding, which combined North Delta and South Delta for the first time in a quartercentury, saw newcomer Carla Qualtrough beat Conservative incumbent Kerry-Lynne Findlay by more than 9,000 votes, making her the first Liberal to represent South Delta in Ottawa since 1968.

Qualtrough was a newcomer to politics, having unsuccessfully run for Delta school board in the municipal election the year before. Her victory over Findlay, a minister in Stephen Harper’s cabinet who had won the DeltaRichmond East riding four years earlier with over 54 per cent of the vote, ended a decades-long Conservative run in South Delta.

Qualtrough garnered 49.3 per cent of the popular vote, while Findlay saw her support drop to just 32.7 per cent. Delta had among the highest voter turnout in the country in 2015 at just over 75 per cent.

Qualtrough went on to be named to cabinet in the Justin Trudeau majority

government, becoming minister of sport and persons with disabilities and later minister of public services and procurement.

Trudeau announced Qualtrough would seek a second term in this year’s election as she looks to prove that 2015 wasn’t an aberration.

Feeling optimistic, Phil Horan, chair of the Liberal riding association in Delta, said they’ve been knocking on doors and asking people specifically how they feel about Qualtrough, and the response has been overwhelmingly favourable.

“Carla is rightly perceived as being very aware of issues in Delta and representing Deltans’ views in Ottawa. Carla and her office are very busy helping constituents across Delta, which has resulted in tangible outcomes and investments in our community. As a local mother of four, whose children are very active, she spends a lot of time in the community and talks to people about their concerns constantly,” he said.

“Working with Carla over the past four years has been a wonderful experience. She has the trust of the EDA (electoral district association) and certainly has proven to be one of the strongest members of cabinet as she takes on more and more responsibility. We are confident that if she continues to work hard for Deltans that they will support her re-election in October,” said Horan.

Meanwhile, Conservative riding association president Sujay

Nazareth said four people have been “kicking the tires” on a potential candidacy in this fall’s election.

So far, only one, Angelina Ireland, has filed her application.

Nazareth said the party is hoping to find out soon when a nomination meeting will be held as the goal is to have a candidate in place by no later than midMay.

“The Conservatives

have been given a little bit of momentum through the size of government deficits and they’ll play their balanced budget, fiscal economy ticket, and that now might become a bigger issue, although the overall economy is at least OK,” added Tupper.

Changes in the political scenes in several provinces could also become a factor, he said.

And even if South Delta swings back to its Conservative leanings, North Delta remains a big X factor.

North Delta had been part of Newton-North Delta until the 2015 election, a riding that had been held by the Conservatives (2004), Liberals (2006 and 2008) and New Democrats (2011). While the NDP won Newton-North Delta in 2011, the Conservatives topped the polls in North Delta.

Fast-forward to last summer and Trudeaumania was in full force as thousands were on hand to give the prime minister an enthusiastic welcome when he paid a visit to an East Delta farm.

He was also harshly lambasted by locals on social media.

Tupper said Trudeau had a fairly long “honeymoon period” thanks to the resignations of the leaders of the two other major parties.

“There’s been a lot of changes and I think it’s going to be a more hotly contested election than people thought,” Tupper observed.

What might work in Trudeau’s favour is the

Conservative fragmentation thanks to Maxime Bernier’s People’s Party of Canada, something that could play out in Delta, he said.

“He has a lot of work to do, but people who don’t like the federal Conservatives, who don’t like the federal Liberals and certainly don’t like the NDP either, those Conservative-leaning people like what Bernier’s putting forward. It’s got to be a little tougher than the Conservative Party is right now in terms of its approach to issues,” said Tupper.

“The Liberals now see mainland British Columbia and places like Delta and Vancouver as an area of great promise for them. They did well last time and put a lot of effort into it. Each riding is different but it’s going to be very, very hotly contested,” he added.

It’s also possible the socalled ethnic vote could play a big factor as well if there’s a concerted effort focusing on winning the Indo-Canadian vote in North Delta, Tupper said.

“That could very well happen. The population of Delta South per se is not like the north. Just look at the controversy in the byelection in Burnaby South where that was made an issue. Those patterns we’ve seen in suburban Toronto as well.”

Findlay, meanwhile, is attempting a comeback as she’s been nominated as the Conservative candidate in South SurreyWhite Rock.

This year’s federal election will be held Oct. 21.

TSAWWASSEN

• March 13, 12:51 p.m., Tsawwassen Ferry Causeway: Complainant reported a man was shoveling beach sand into the bed of a pick-up truck.

Upon arrival police identified the vehicle and initiated a traffic stop. Police spoke to the driver who advised that his friend advised him that it would be OK to take the sand from the beach. Police advised the male not do this in the future as it could have strict bylaw

repercussions. The male understood and reported he would not do it again.

• March 13, 9:56 p.m., 1000-block of 56th Street: Unknown caller called police to report that a group of approximately 10 young boys were either chasing each other or being chased. Police attended and patrols were negative for anyone engaging in the described activity.

• March 15, 10:28 a.m., 5000-block of 16th Avenue: Complainant reported that her vehicle was broken into overnight from a parkade. The complainant advised that the driver door lock had been damaged, and approximately $500 worth of assorted tools had been stolen. A piece of paper had been wedged over the garage entrance door, which was believed to be the point of entry into the parkade.

The complainant was advised to contact ICBC with police file number for claim.

• March 16, 10:16 a.m., 4900-block of Chehalis Drive: Complainant called police to report the shed at his residence was broken into and his bike

Delta police responded to a single-vehicle accident just before 9 a.m. last Saturday in the 5600-block of Ladner’s Admiral Boulevard after the driver of a van drove into the front yard of a residence. Officers administered an approved screening device to the driver who blew “0” and stated the accident was caused by a coughing fit. The driver was issued a violation ticket for driving without due care. The van was towed and the driver left the scene on foot. was stolen. Complainant advised that he had not been home since midNovember so timeframe of theft unknown. Bike valued at $300. Due to delay on report, no surveillance and no witnesses, police unable to investigate further.

• March 16, 11:04 p.m., 5100-block of 8A Avenue: Complainant reported a disturbance described as a loud party. Police attended the residence and identified a male who reported

that he was having a birthday party. Since the male’s guardian was not at residence, police advised the party be shut down. Police also called the guardian to make him aware of the situation to which he reported to police that he was aware and would be home shortly.

• March 10, 11:14 a.m., 47A Avenue and Garry Street: Complainant reported a construction

bylaw noise complaint.

Police observed the construction and located a male who self-identified as leader of the construction team. The male was issued a warning in regards to breach of municipal noise bylaw and advised he could receive a ticket for future violations. The male apologized, stated he understood and left the area with his team. The construction company was contacted by police and advised the construction workers were issued a warning and have left the site.

• March 12, 5:23 a.m., 4600-block of 53rd Street: Complainant reported that for the past hour a dog had been barking which she believed to be from a residence in the neighbourhood. The complainant advised the dog sounded in distress. Police attended the area where patrols were conducted for approximately 20 minutes with negative results.

• March 14, 6 a.m., 10000-block of Hornby Drive: Anonymous report of a red Dodge Challenger excessively speeding in

a 50 km/h zone every morning. Police set up laser speed detection device and at 6:45 a.m. officers observed a red Dodge Challenger in the oncoming lane passing another vehicle. Officers estimated the speed at 115 km/h. Laser enforcement confirmed vehicle speed at 110 km/h. The driver was charged with excessive speeding and illegally passing on lined roadway. The driver was issued a violation ticket and a notice of seven-day vehicle impoundment.

• March 15, 12:08 a.m., 5900-block of 49A Avenue: Police observed a Chevrolet Cobalt parked at Bell Park with the driver’s side rear triangle window smashed. Police contacted the owner who advised her backpack with black leggings were stolen from the rear seat. Police determined the offence occurred overnight.

• March 15, 11:10 p.m., 5000-block of 57A Street: Complainant reported a noisy party in the neighbourhood. Police spoke with a woman at the party and advised her to keep the party inside to reduce overall noise level.

ollaboration is generally a good thing, but when it comes to planning a new crossing of the Fraser River, I have apprehensions about such an approach.

I recognize that the more voices you have at the table, the better the outcome will be, but that premise is based on the notion that everyone involved is looking out for the greater good, which might not necessarily be the case when it comes to a gathering of regional mayors.

Delta North MLA Ravi Kahlon was lauding the NDP’s handling of the issue while speaking at a Delta Chamber of Commerce luncheon earlier this month, suggesting the voices of all Lower Mainland communities will be heard before a business case is presented for the preferred crossing option next fall.

There are many new mayors as a result of last fall’s civic elections, but this group has historically been ambivalent toward a replacement for the George Massey Tunnel, partly because it was considered a provincial responsibility but perhaps more due to the fact that members wanted scarce infrastructure dollars to be spent in their own back yards.

I’m not sure much has changed on the territorial front as both Vancouver and Surrey have already flexed their political muscles within the new group to move forward on prohibitively costly SkyTrain extensions in those two cities.

Expanding rapid transit is a laudable goal, but given there’s only so much money to go around, you have to wonder what will be left for the Highway 99 corridor.

When regional representatives got together to devise a 10-Year Vision for our transportation network, some areas got rapid transit investments, others received increased bus service, whereas Delta got one of its park and ride lots repaved. Then-MLA Vicki Huntington aptly described our slice of the pie as little more than the crumbs.

Maybe I’m being too cynical and the new-look Mayors’ Council will endorse a project that adequately addresses the congestion at what’s generally considered the biggest bottleneck in B.C. I’m holding out hope that’s the case, but I worry that regional politicians have a history of being far more concerned with their own interests than what might be good for their neighbours.

Now that council knows truth, why is casino proceeding?

wo weeks ago I watched the HBO documentary Leaving Neverland, which chronicled the interactions of Michael Jackson with boys under the age of 10. When Jackson was at the peak of his career, his fame, fortune and apparent genuine love of children allowed the world, and the parents, to give him the benefit of the doubt as they watched this 30-year-old man interact with seven-year-olds.

The documentary is very detailed and graphic and has caused people and companies to re-think the career and influence of Jackson. The BBC and radio stations around the world have removed his music from their playlists and the Simpsons have eradicated an episode that included him. I loved his music but this is a moral decision that each of us will have to make for ourselves.

Also over the last two weeks I have attended Delta council meetings in support of Delta residents who oppose the approved casino for South Delta.

These residents realize how the previous council was misinformed at length by the B.C. Lottery Corporation and Gateway when it amended the bylaw banning all forms of gaming to allow this casino. Since that time numerous reports have been done by the province, the federal government and the RCMP

that conclusively prove the link between international crime and money laundering in B.C. casinos.

The criminal world refers to the way this works as the “Vancouver Model” and it has been operating for over 14 years without government or law enforcement being able to stop it.

Much of the money, into the billions of dollars, being laundered comes from the sale of drugs. When the money is cleaned, it is dumped into Vancouver real estate, expensive cars and many other aspects of our economy, causing all sorts of issues.

How many people in Delta do you know that will show up at this casino with hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash to play blackjack for the evening? For over a decade casinos overseen

by BCLC have accepted hockey bags and boxes full of $20 bills to purchase chips. Is this proper and

capable management?

So now it is suggested that cashless casinos will solve this issue. Doesn’t anyone understand what we are dealing with? Now the clients can just use credit card fraud instead of carrying those heavy bags of cash. They are already using bank drafts issued by illegal banking operations in the Lower Mainland.

When our kids can’t afford to live here, when you see homeless camps and you watch first responders rushing to another drug overdose or fentanyl death, remember all of this has some connection to casinos.

The residents of Delta have made council aware of every aspect of these reports and much more information, yet this new council continues to pursue the construction of this casino and one has to ask why?

I’m very sure that if the parents of the kids Michael Jackson took under his wing knew what he actually was, they would never have allowed their kids anywhere near him.

Well, Delta council now knows the truth about the money in casinos and the pain, sorrow and chaos it causes, so why would it allow construction to proceed?

It’s worth asking council members.

Dog walker believes officers could have used discretion

Editor: I thought for a long time as to whether to send this to you, but if it helps others avoid some embarrassment, and some dollars, well, why not.

I took my dogs out for a walk at the dike the other day, my daughter’s dog and my 14-yearold English shepherd.

It was along the portion that curves around the pond and in front of the First Nation’s homes in Tsawwassen.

It was a beautiful, sunny day. No one else but me.

As I returned from the short walk, us old dogs can’t go far these days, I observed a vehicle parked in front of the gate. As I got closer, red and blue emergency lights started flashing and two enforcement officers got out of their vehicle, ticket book in hand.

One pointed at the sign and said, “Your dogs are supposed on the leash.”

“Yes, I know,” I replied.

“They harm the wildlife,” he informs me.

“My dogs don’t chase the wildlife,” I said.

“You could end up with all sorts of tickets for this,” one said.

“Well, I won’t come here again,” I answered.

“Fine,” he said.

I wished them a good day, got in my car and left thinking that was the end of the matter.

Not quite. The next day I received a Tsawwassen First Nation ticket in the mail. Driver of the vehicle, me, charged with “untethered animal in public place.” Cost: $100, $50 if I get it to them quickly. Am I guilty? Yes. Will I pay it?

Yes. I’m not happy about it though.

I was a police officer for over 35 years, so I know a fair bit about enforcing the rules. I learned early on that when it comes to minor offences, discretion plays a big part in enforce-

ment. Did I ticket drivers for doing 52 km/h in a 50 km/h zone? No. Driving at 80 km/h in a 50 km/h zone? Yes. If my dogs had been chasing the wildlife, jumping into the pond and destroying the habitat, would I have deserved the ticket? Yes, certainly. But a ticket to have my 14-yearold dog plodding along, 10 feet behind me, barely able to keep up, enjoying a certain freedom to stop and sniff when she chose?

Not likely.

Perhaps using discretion is not a part of the training for Tsawwassen First Nation enforcement officers. Or perhaps they felt this was such a serious infraction it warranted a $100 fine. I don’t know.

But I do know that if you want to take your dogs for a walk along the dike, and you want them to enjoy a certain amount of freedom, don’t go where I did.

Don’t turn Southlands into another Granville Island or Steveston

Editor: At last week’s public hearing it was interesting to see a presenter in support of a 51-foot tall building housing an industrial brewery operation and adjacent 200-seat restaurant proposal for the Southlands comparing it to Granville Island and Steveston as a public attraction.

I work at Granville Island. The place, popular as ever, is a zoo. Traffic gridlock is the norm and although it is served by transit and a ferry system, parking is difficult to find.

The same applies to Steveston. On any given sunny weekend, it is over-

run with tourists and locals, and again, cars continually circle looking for magic parking. With this proposal, we are asked to reduce the number of parking spots.

This seems like a conundrum: Tourism Delta and the Delta Chamber of Commerce are advocating approval mentioning that it will attract hordes of visitors and at the same time we are asked to reduce parking spaces.

Is this what we had in mind when the Southlands residential project was approved? We heard of the inclusion of small businesses such as bakeries,

hairdressers, a book shop, a coffee shop and others that cater to community needs. Now before a single construction nail has been driven, we are asked to approve a rezoning for an industrial brewery with its silos, truck deliveries and bottling/warehousing components.

Even though it is appreciated that Four Winds Brewery is a company that is a good employer, makes great beer and supports community events, it is an industrial operation and should not be approved to occupy half of the allotted commercial space at the Southlands.

Lack of casino agreements could prove costly

Editor: I asked Delta council about casino social contracts/agreements in an email in November 2018 and during question periods at council meetings on March 4 and 11. The city has not responded.

Why didn’t Delta enter into social contracts/ agreements during the

bylaw process to require local labour and local suppliers for Gateway’s Cascades Casino Delta? And why didn’t Delta procure extra payments for a responsible gaming fund or crime costs?

The City of Vancouver did and is receiving an additional $600,000 per

year from its gaming service provider. Over a 30-year lease in Delta, this could add up to $18 million in lost funds and a negative local economic impact.

Is there still an opportunity to enter into these type of contracts/agreements with Gateway?

T2 project should have been abandoned a long time ago Editor: Re: Public to finally have a say on T2, March 14 The in-depth article provides a well-balanced viewpoint, however, there are several statements from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) that are misleading.

There is no validity in the notion that Canadian containers will be forced to travel via the U.S. As Global Container Terminals has stated, the U.S. traffic now routed through Canadian ports is discretionary. Port operators have stated they would divert U.S. containers to U.S. ports if there is a need to do so in order to accommodate Canadian traffic.

It is also worth pointing out that handling U.S. containers at Canadian ports adds nothing to the Canadian economy. If you follow the logic under the VFPA scenario, T2 would be built to handle U.S. traffic. Where is the sense in that?

The VFPA claim that even with expansion at Prince Rupert T2 is still needed is also false.

Container traffic through Prince Rupert is growing at almost three times the rate of VFPA. The Prince Rupert container facilities are growing to meet the demand.

Their expansion is being done in phases and they have potential for a full build out to between four and five million containers.

VFPA also conveniently forgets a federal government study done by leading experts several years ago. One of their recommendations was to maximize Prince Rupert’s potential before building any further container facilities in Vancouver.

Finally, the VFPA’s paid consultants conclude that T2 “...is not likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects.”

None of the port’s environmental studies have been peer-reviewed by

experts independent from the VFPA. However, independent experts are already challenging these conclusions, siding with Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) in stating that building T2 will indeed adversely impact intertidal biofilm and, consequently, migratory shorebirds in general, and the western sandpiper species in particular.

ECCC also notes the negative impacts will be immediate, continuous, irreversible and cannot be mitigated.

The T2 project should have been abandoned a long time ago. Once the independent scientists explain the negative environmental impacts to the panel during the public hearings this should put the final nail in the T2 coffin.

To continue with Robin Silvester’s metaphor, rather than entering the stadium, T2 is about to double fault at match point.

Editor: Since bad driving is maiming or killing so many, as well as hiking our insurance rates, could Crime Beat include tallies of fines issued for running red lights, ignoring stops, failing to stop before turning right on a red, improper turns, sloppy lane changes, speeding, tailgating?

Publishing these figures would tell us in graphic counts whether our police force is taking traffic safety seriously. I’d like to think it is, but I see too many people committing all of these traffic infractions and more with impunity.

There’s an old say-

ing that cities and police forces prove true over and over again: “Nothing will be done until after somebody is killed.”

After several deaths and many injuries, adjustments were made to traffic and pedestrian control signals in Delta, but given that Tsawwassen alone has seen two accidents involving pedestrians since those adjustments were made, it has to be concluded that more assiduous enforcement of traffic safety laws is in order.

Earlier this month I came upon the aftermath — blood and other body fluids — of a man who’d been struck on 56th Street.

The police refer to this tragedy as a “collision” and it was a “collision” but it was one between a tandem dump truck made of tons of steel and a human of blood, bones, tissue and a heart.

Nobody mourns a dump truck or a car when it’s hauled off to the scrap yard, but family and friends do mourn a victim, be he killed, or be he crippled for life.

And lest we forget, our doctors are saving more and more victims from traffic death rolls, which is good but tragic because too many of them are crippled for life.

Don’t let mall redevelopment follow Southlands’ lead

Editor: Re: More than just a pub, Murphy’s Law, March 7 Century Group’s plan to industrialize the Southlands — adding further to the traffic congestion on 56th Street

— shows the application passed by Delta council was the thin end of the wedge. Council fell for it.

Where will it end?

We may expect Century Group to apply the same strategy to the redevelopment of the Town Centre

Mall; we know it envisions one or more high-rises.

Unless council stands up for the good of the community by banning the project altogether, the outlook for Tsawwassen is bleak indeed.

Don’t let Delta be a community that loses its local newspaper

Editor: Loss of local newspapers is a trend in small communities all over North America. A column in the Vancouver Sun this week prompted this letter.

Over 1,400 small papers have shut down over the past 15 years in the U.S. I’m sure you noticed that the Optimist arrives only once a week instead of twice. This could be the canary in the coal mine for our small community.

People check all their devices to get the news.

The lifeblood of revenue for our paper comes from advertising. This cash is now being diverted to online sources. Staff working for the paper should be paid for their efforts.

We look to the paper for those great warmhearted items about our children, Crime Beat, local business, sports and club events, arts and entertainment news, municipal council

and other local activities, even obituaries.

Federal Liberals have situational ethics

Editor: Re: MP remains confident in PM, March 7 Of course Delta MP Carla Qualtrough supports Justin Trudeau. Why would we expect anything else? She, like the rest of the cabinet, have situational ethics.

As far as Trudeau’s handing the SNC-Lavalin affair, he obviously does

not know what to do as he has run into something he has never run into before in his life: two Liberals with ethics. One is flabbergasting, two is a miracle.

That brings me back to Qualtrough.

As a Canadian citizen, it is a good thing she was never attorney general, as she would have given into Trudeau and SNC would have gotten their DPA, and

probably we would never have heard a thing about it.

As a retired lawyer I can hardly wait for a defence lawyer to try the Trudeau defence in the next attempted murder case. The Trudeau defence is a simple one in that you can’t charge me with attempted murder because I didn’t kill her.

Cartoon accurately depicts political opportunist

Editor: Re: Cartoon is racist propaganda, letter to the editor, March 14 Firstly, I think, lighten up. Oh but perhaps you do not have a sense of humour.

This view was pretty accurate description of an opportunist who suppos-

edly left Ontario to run in a “safe” socialist-leaning riding. There some supporters that are still trying to block the necessary pipeline would rise to the occasion to vote him into Parliament.

I would wager he would not have won a seat running in an Ontario riding.

Perhaps you are hoping he could be the leader to form an NDP government and you are hopeful of a guaranteed income for doing nothing, which is one of the socialist planks he wants to implement.

Hopefully that will never come to pass.

Treatment areas will be restricted to infestations of Spartina spp. on cobble beaches, salt marshes, and intertidal mudflats (at low tide) located in Boundary Bay, Robert’s Bank, and Burrard Inlet, but treatment may expand over the course of the permit period to include sites at Sturgeon Bank and Sea Island. The total area proposed for herbicide treatment is a maximum of 10 hectares annually, spread across approximately 12,332 coastal hectares.

Pesticide applications will consist only of the herbicide product Habitat (active ingredient: imazapyr), and the adjuvant IPCO Ag-Surf ll (active ingredient: alcohol ethoxylate) which will be applied to selected sites within the areas indicated above using hand-held spray bottles, backpack sprayers, or mounted sprayers. Pesticide application will complement existing and ongoing mechanical removal methods.

This is the third application for a pesticide use permit submitted by the provincial government for pesticide use on Spartina spp. The previous six years of herbicide treatments have shown a significant decreasing trend in the overall abundance and distribution of these noxious weeds. The proposed duration of this pesticide use is from June 1, 2019 to May 31, 2022.

Experiencing dementia – for 30 minutes

Virtual tour comes to The Waterford to give staff and community leaders unique perspective IAN JACQUES

Community leaders, emergency personnel and health officials had a chance to see first-hand what life is like walking in the shoes of someone with dementia — and it was an uncomfortable experience for most.

Last week, The Waterford seniors’ community in Tsawwassen hosted the Virtual Dementia Tour during a day-long event.

The tour is an experimental training program that uses patented devices to temporarily alter participants’ reality to give a unique glimpse into the dementia world.

Developed by P.K. Beville, a geriatric specialist and founder of Second Wind Dreams, the half-hour tour was created to give caregivers, family, first responders and health care providers unique insight into the struggles and challenges of those with dementia.

Last Wednesday, the Optimist was on hand to take the tour with Delta

South MLA Ian Paton and his constituency assistant Taylor Grant.

“I was very confused. I maybe understood a few words that were said, but I had no idea what to do in the room,” said Grant during a post-tour debrief with staff at The Waterford.

Paton said it was certainly an eye-opening and educational experience.

District wants action on shop teacher shortage

There’s a shortage of trades teachers in Delta.

At last week’s Delta board of education meeting, trustees agreed to send a letter to the province, including Delta MLAs Ian Paton and Ravi Kahlon, outlining the growing issue of a lack of shop teachers.

Noting Delta has had to close shop classes due to a lack of teaching staff, board chair Laura Dixon said many teachers are retiring, creating a shortage that’s made all the more challenging because only BCIT provides the necessary trades and technical training.

Those who want to become teachers must then take a two-year certificate program at UBC, all the while they could be making money elsewhere, she said.

“It’s doing a disservice to students and staff. This is a province-wide issue,” she said.

Dixon said the province needs to get engaged with other stakeholders to find a solution, which could include establishing additional training centres.

The letter notes a significant theme of Kahlon’s recent presentation to the Delta Chamber of Commerce was the economic strength of sectors that employ British Columbians in trades, technical and vocational careers. It states the Delta district understands that opportunities for students to gain exposure and training in these areas while enrolled in K-12 is a key to preparing for such jobs.

“Yet, there is a significant gap in our ability to connect students with the careers of the future. Our school district is unable to hire the specialist teachers needed to support our students’ access due to a province-wide shortage of qualified technology education teachers. In fact, we have had to close some shop classrooms in Delta because of our inability to find qualified candidates…” the letter states.

B.C.’s new curriculum includes applied design, skills and technology content beginning in kindergarten.

“Our teachers are now using these skills with their students. When these

students begin Grade 8 they will have greater proficiency and interest in continuing with these skills-based courses and, accordingly, there will be an even greater demand for courses in technical education,” the board stated.

An enhanced service model for policing at the Tsawwassen First Nation is paying big dividends.

The TFN service team is a result of a contractual policing agreement between the Delta police and TFN with six police officers (one sergeant and five constables) dedicated to TFN policing.

The TFN jurisdiction includes the Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons shopping malls as well as residential and industrial developments.

Delta police Chief Neil Dubord said the relationship between police and the TFN is “exceptional” with both parties working together in developing overall public safety strategies.

Dubord said the service team is running at full strength, operating seven days a week, 12 hours a day, with patrol officers providing call response during off hours or if officers are tied up on a call.

Pepsi is an adorable male mixed breed who weighs 25lbs. Don’t let the white speckles and greyish muzzle fool you, he’s only one year old! PB&Chi took him in after an adoption thru another rescue didn’t work out. Pepsi was a street dog in India, and is therefore a bit shy and scared of his new country and people.

It takes him a bit of time to warm up to new people, but once he does, what a little ham! He is so playful and goofy! When it comes to other animals, look out because Pepsi LOVES them all, cats too! He ADORES big dogs, especially pitbulls (good thing he’s with us!) and we feel he must go to a home with at least one other dog who will give him calm and confidence. Because of the huge change in his world, Pepsi is working on issues with separation anxiety. He is not a fan of being left alone, and will cry for about 10-15 minutes when first left. He must be crated when left alone or will panic and hurt himself, but he is fine in his crate. In his current foster home, she leaves him out with her dogs while she is at work and he has no issues, makes no peep. At night he sleeps in his crate. Pepsi is almost completely house trained and is practicing his leash skills; he pulls a bit and zig zags, but is easy to control. This sweet boy will be such a gem once he settles into his new culture and country. A active family that loves to hike, bike and explore would be ideal for him as he is an active guy and it would help acclimate him to his new world. As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines and microchipped. We are looking for an immediate foster or furever home. There’s a new face at the helm of the Tsawwassen Community Police Station.

Const. Lee Chapman took over last month from Const. Leisa Schaefer who has left the Delta Police Department to take a role in an integrated unit as part of the RCMP. Chapman, who has been with the DPD for 11 years in general patrol, is also a trained negotiator working with the RCMP throughout the Lower Mainland.

Prior to joining DPD, he worked as part of the nursing team at Colony Farms psychiatric hospital.

said the initiative has been a success and will be run on a regular basis to deter criminals from coming to Delta and TFN lands to commit crimes.

He said cultural awareness training is also integral to the work of the service team as much of their time is focused on community engagement, visibility and participating in events in order to build

relationships.

“The feedback from the majority of TFN has been very welcoming to the service team,” Dubord added.

“Recognizing that relationships between Indigenous peoples and law enforcement can be highly strained, Delta police are in an enviable position of developing a unique and beneficial policing model for the TFN.”

Damage to sidewalk and buildings prompts tree removal in village

A group of trees along 48th Avenue in Ladner Village will be replaced following their removal last week.

The tree removal caused several residents to reach out to the Optimist to express concerns, but according to the City of Delta, they had no choice to remove them.

“The sidewalks were heaving badly and the roots were actually getting into the foundation of some of the buildings and heaving the slab of the building, so we did have to do something along that stretch,” said engineering director Steven Lan. “We did consult the LBA (Ladner Business Association), who were supportive of the work. We did send out notifications to the village businesses prior to the works being undertaken.”

Reporter offers an inside look Legendary George Garrett looks back on storied career in new memoir

It’s a must read for history buffs, journalism fans or anyone who just loves a good story.

Legendary reporter and newsman George Garrett has recently launched Intrepid Reporter.

In the memoir, Garrett shares the behindthe-scenes tales of his harrowing, humourous and occasionally humiliating investigative tactics, from posing as an accident victim to uncover the questionable practices of an insurance lawyer, to acting as a tow truck driver to expose a forgery scheme, and baring it all for the sake of an interview with a local nudist colony.

He also delves into the

personal details of his life, sharing the hardships and resilience that marks him as an empathetic storyteller. He reveals the heartbreaking loss of his son in a canoeing accident and his wife Joan’s devastating diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease, which inspired him to dedicate his time to supporting the Alzheimer Society.

“It was truly a labour of love,” said Garrett. “I started thinking about this book long after my retirement. I wanted to leave something for my grandchildren about what their ‘papa’ did. I had so many experiences covering stories in B.C. that it might be something of interest.”

The book is flying off the shelves and several of his appearances in Maple

Ridge and Surrey have seen people lined up down the street to meet Garrett and have him sign their copy.

It is also number three on the best-seller list.

“I’m just a reporter.

I’m not a writer. I just tell stories,” he said. “It’s humbling and rewarding to see the reactions from people. My intent was to give the public an insider’s view into how one covers a beat, the essence of stories, the contacts you build up and the trust that you develop. To me that is the basis of good reporting — the contacts you build up.

There is a time to release a story and a time to hold it for a while, particularly if there is an investigation involved.”

Starting from humble

beginnings as a farm boy in Saskatchewan, Garrett rose through the ranks of journalism. Now retired, he spent more than 40 years with CKNW. He also worked for BCTV, now Global TV. He has received the Bruce Hutchison Lifetime Achievement Award from the Jack Webster Foundation and the Radio Television Digital News Association of Canada Lifetime Achievement Award. He lives in Surrey, and continues to be active with the Volunteer Cancer Drivers’ Society, which has been featured in the Optimist on numerous occasions.

Garrett said despite the challenges that journalists face today and the industry as a whole, he feels the role of journalists

is still vitally important to society.

“In this era of fake news, (U.S. President Donald) Trump has sold the idea of fake news and that is damaging to the institution,” he said. “When all is said and done and beyond the politics we are the last resort at getting at the truth and that is an important role of the media. I think a segment of the public are convinced that everything is fake news. Well, it isn’t.

The real news is important. It’s a tough job, but I really have great hopes for the future. We have good people in journalism right across the country. The public is well served.”

Three long-standing and beloved community festivals have been recognized with this year’s Delta Friends of Heritage awards.

At the March 11 council meeting, Mayor George Harvie presented the awards to representatives from the Ladner Pioneer May Days, Tsawwassen Sun Festival and North Delta Family Day. “This year we [council] have decided to recognize the people who strengthen community traditions by carrying on long-standing community celebrations,

Wedding day schedule keeps couple on time

Wedding days can be hectic. In fact, many couples note after tying the knot that their wedding days were so busy the ceremonies and receptions were over before they knew it.

Creating a wedding day schedule can seem like a daunting task. Couples tend to have lots of things to do before saying “I do,” and organizing everything so ceremonies begin on time can seem as puzzling as a brain teaser. But certain scheduling strategies can help couples ensure they look their best and make it to the altar on time.

• Start with the ceremony. Couples can establish a framework for their wedding day schedule by working back from the ceremony. Once the ceremony time is set, couples who plan to take photos before their ceremonies can then work with their photographers to determine how much time they will need for photos and

where they want to take the photos. Bridal parties may need transportation to the photo session, so determining when and where to take photos before the ceremony gives couples an idea of when to arrange for pickup.

• Confirm when the wedding venue is open to the wedding party. Before booking hair and makeup appointments, couples should confirm when they will be able to access their wedding venue. Brides may want to get their hair and makeup done at the ceremony site, but that may only be possible if the venue opens early for the wedding party. If it does not, then brides must account for transportation time to the ceremony site when making their wedding day schedules.

• Determine how much time is needed for hair and makeup. Weddings that feature large bridal parties will require more time for hair and makeup than ceremonies with small

bridal parties. Grooms and groomsmen often take care of their own hair, though some grooms might want to schedule hot shaves for themselves and their groomsmen. Grooms should ask groomsmen if they want a hot shave and then work with their barbers to determine how much time it will take to tend to all participants.

Brides with large bridal parties may need to book more than two hair and makeup artists so everyone can get done on time.

Wedding hair and makeup sessions can last several hours for large bridal parties, so brides should schedule their sessions early if their parties are big.

• Make lunch arrangements. Some couples choose to tie the knot and host their receptions at the same venue. In such instances, if brides are getting their hair and makeup done at the venue, ask the venue rep-

Some venues may include small lunch buffets in their reception costs, while others might charge extra. • Distribute your schedule to one another and the bridal party. Once the wedding day schedule has been devised, couples should share it with each other and their wedding parties. Grooms’ wedding day to-do lists might not

be as extensive as brides’, but grooms should still be kept in the loop regarding the schedule so they can help if anyone has questions or if something goes awry.

Sharing the schedule with the wedding party decreases the chances of someone being late or missing an appointment.

Library bringing pocket-size robots to town

Ozobots are coming to Tsawwassen tomorrow.

The Fraser Valley Regional Library will launch Tech-Up with Ozobots at seven branches throughout the region, including the Tsawwassen Library. Aimed at children in grades 4 to 6, the pro-

gram offers a fun introduction to coding and digital exploration.

Participants will use logic and creativity to program the Ozobot Bit, a pocket-size robot that can move, change its speed and direction, and display coloured LED lights.

Children can control the Bit’s movements by drawing coloured lines on paper using markers. Once they learn the basics, they can use tablets and dragand-drop coding to program the robots through a series of challenges.

FVRL’s Ozobots program grew out of a partnership with Science World British Columbia. The regional library system received

a donation of 18 Ozobot Bits as a result of Science World’s Tech-Up program.

This initiative promotes coding and computation thinking instruction in schools and libraries throughout B.C. FVRL supplemented the donation by purchasing 10 more Ozobots, along with tablets and learning resources.

est addition to the FVRL Playground, a collection of non-tradition library offerings that foster STEAM learning. The Playground began in 2016 when FVRL received a donation of ukuleles from a local arts group. Since then, the Playground has grown to include programmable robots, telescopes, green screens, circuit boards and virtual reality experiences.

This strong horse-rider relationship I developed allowed me to see from an early age how important a trusting relationship is, along with the importance of staying dedicated in difficult situations.

Delaying maintenance not worth risk

sharply on the road, and if your ball joints fail your suspension can collapse, also causing to lose all steering control.

Underinflated tires can cause your tires to overheat and blow out, while overinflated tires reduce your car’s contact with the road and wear more quickly.

It’s spring — finally — but I’m not about to start cleaning.

But that’s what I’m told I ought to be doing. When

the fairest season arrives and the dark days of winter are done, I’m supposed to be hauling the throw rugs out on the lawn and beating the heck out of them.

I’m supposed to be giving the walls a good wipe down. I’m expected to wash all the table linens and dust the crown moulding and disinfect the light switches and scour the Venetian blinds and clean behind the washer

In any case, it perplexes me why there’s such a thing as spring cleaning, but no summer or winter counterpart. Do the blinds not get as dusty in July and the rugs as dirty in

January?

If anything, there should be something called fall cleaning, given that all summer long, people have been tramping in and out of the house, tracking in dirt on their bare feet and dripping their Popsicles on the kitchen floor.

Yet, here we are: on the second day of spring. And there I was, just last week, gawking at a magazine’s headlines when I was standing in the checkout at the supermarket.

It was the magazine’s spring issue. Inside, I was told, I would find a recipe for a brilliant Easter feast, a spread on the newest seasonal styles and a perkme-up to get my makeup April ready.

And then there was this: a checklist for cleaning up spring-style. Forget it, I thought, leaving the magazine where it was.

There’ll be no spring cleaning, not this week or next. I’d rather be whistling while walking.

Delta Grinding Facility Project - Public Comments Invited March 18, 2019 — The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (the Agency) must decide whether a federal environmental assessment is required for the proposed Delta Grinding Facility Project, located in British Columbia.

To help inform this decision, the Agency is seeking comments from the public and Indigenous groups on the project and its potential effects on the environment, as described in the summary of the project description.

Substitution Request The Government of British Columbia has requested that the environmental assessment for this project under B.C.’s Environmental Assessment Act be substituted for the federal environmental assessment under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 (CEAA 2012). This means the provincial government would conduct the environmental assessment of the project on behalf of the Agency.

The Agency is also seeking comments from the public and Indigenous groups on this request.

Ladner Rotarians bring clean water to Laos

Many thousands of people, mostly children, in small, remote villages of northern Laos, are living healthier lives with access to clean water and, in turn, a valuable education to improve their lives thanks to Adopt-A-Village in Laos.

A team of Ladner Rotary members has just returned home after delivering water filters and education supplies to the remote villages in Laos’s Luang Prabang province.

Providing water filters to these villages enables education support in that region by providing clean water and significantly reducing illness preventing children from attending school and adults from supporting their families.

Education was the original aim of Adopt-A-Village, which has expanded into providing clean water in a poor country still suffering the impact of the Vietnam War and struggling to look after its people.

The first stop on this year’s Adopt-A-Village water filter distribution tour, to deliver 240 water filters, was Ban Xiengd, a

village of 2,000 people.

Last year, Rotary Club of Ladner led a project, with the support of others and the Rotary Foundation, to fund and help build two small dams, 6.5 kilometres of pipe, a large concrete water tank and 15 tap stations spread throughout the village. The touring team also visited four other, smaller villages to distribute another 240 water filters.

“I want to make this world a better place,” said Ladner Rotarian Mike Storey, who just completed his fifth Adopt-A-Village tour with wife Kathy. “I want to help those people who have very limited options and who were born into the difficult situation they find themselves in.

“We see first-hand that what we do has tremendous meaning to them, and we can see the appreciation in their faces. I have found that these trips abroad give me a new appreciation for Canada and for the opportunity and freedoms that we have here.”

Being one of the country’s top field hockey players comes with an extra burden these days for Sara McManus.

The 25-year-old from Tsawwassen is one of the greatest players to ever come out of the Falcons Field Hockey Club. The standout defender has been a fixture with the national team since she was 17 and already has 165 international caps to her credit which ranks near the top in the history of the senior women’s national team program.

Along the way, McManus helped Canada win bronze at the 2015 Pan Am Games in Toronto and also was a member of dominant run at UBC that won national titles in 2012-13.

The South Delta Secondary graduate wants nothing more than to get to the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. Canada hasn’t reached the sport’s pinnacle event since the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona.

SDSS grad helps UBC capture national title Jayde Robertsen makes instant impact with T-Birds after transferring from Eastern Washington Jayde Robertsen’s homecoming couldn’t have had a better ending.

The former South Delta Sun Devils standout helped the UBC Thunderbirds capture the U Sports national women’s volleyball championship on Sunday in Edmonton after a thrilling five-set victory over the defending champion Ryerson Rams.

Robertsen, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker, began her collegiate career at Eastern Washington before transferring to UBC. The 2017 SDSS graduate wasted little time in making an impact, cracking the starting line-up in 29 of 30 matches. She ranked third on the team with 185 kills.

UBC entered the nationals as the eighth seed and opened with a five-set win over B.C. rival and No. 1 Trinity Western (2523, 27-25, 23-25, 23-25, 16-14).

Robertsen recorded nine kills and five blocks.

The Thunderbirds then

defeated Dalhousie 3-1 (25-20, 22-25, 25-16, 25-21) in the semifinals with Robertsen adding five more kills.

The championship match saw Ryerson jump out to a two set lead (14-25, 20-25) before the Thunderbirds rallied with a pair of 25-20 wins to pull even. The decisive game was 15-11.

UBC finished the game with a .245 attack percentage to Ryerson’s .197.

That’s after UBC started the match hitting just .062 in the opening set. The slow momentum swing was palpable over the course of the match, eventually shifting heavily into UBC’s favour.

The triumph ended an improbable journey.

“We were 0-3 in league (to start the season) but battling to even get into the top five in playoffs,” said UBC head coach Doug Reimer after receiving his eighth gold medal with the T-Birds and ninth overall. “Four weeks on

An outstanding competitive season continued for Tunnel Town Curling Club juniors at the 2019 BC U18 Championships.

Meredith Cole and Keira McCoy were members of the silver medalist Team Taylor rink that also featured Jensen and Chelsea Taylor.

The girls fell 10-2 to Team Buchy in Sunday’s championship game at the Juan de Fuca Curling Club. Back in December this up-and-coming rink produced a 4-3 record in its debut at the BC Junior Women’s Championship. Cole and McCoy are only in Grade 10 and 9 respectively.

Team Taylor’s run to the podium in Juan de Fuca included a 5-2 record in round-robin play to finish third at the eightrink event, then a come-frombehind 6-5 win over Vancouver Island’s Team Douglas in the semi-finals. Taylor scored a pair in the eighth to tie the game and added another in the ninth.

Meanwhile, Connor Deane and Sam Husdon continued their decorated campaign with a bronze medal in the boys U18 draw.

The rink was skipped by Deane and Husdon was the third. They were joined by Mack Ellis and Troy Cowan — both from Vancouver Island. The boys were coached by Tunnel Town’s Cody Tanaka.

Team Deane secured a semi-

final berth with a 5-2 record, then dropped a 5-4 heartbreaker to eventual champion Team Colwell from the Interior. Deane had stormed back from an early 4-0 deficit to tie the game.

Colwell scored one in the eighth to break the deadlock.

Husdon and Deane also made their debut at the BC Junior Men’s where they finished fourth. They went on to enjoy a terrific high school season — leading the Delta Pacers to the Fraser Valley title and a second place finish at the B.C. Secondary Schools Championships.

Deane’s season is not finished yet. He will be competing in next month’s B.C. Mixed Championships as a member of Team Umbach.

South Delta Secondary School’s west gym was impressively transformed into an elite level gymnastics venue for last week’s B.C. Secondary Schools Championships.

The two-day meet welcomed over 300 gymnasts from across the province and was cohosted by SDSS and the Delta Gymnastics Society. It’s the second time in recent memory the Ladner based club has pulled off the feat, having brought the competition to Delta Secondary in 2011.

Thursday’s session featured girls competing for titles in Levels 2-5. The championships wrapped up with Level 1 for junior and senior girls, as well as boys in Levels 1-5.

Tsawwassen beach volleyball twins Megan and Nicole McNamara have been named Sport BC’s Team of the Year following a dominant 2018 campaign.

The 21-year-olds were recognized on Wednesday as part of the 53rd Annual Sport BC Awards Ceremony and Gala dinner at the Fairmont Pacific Rim. The Minto Cup junior lacrosse champion Coquitlam Adanacs and the rowing pair of Hillary Janssens and Caileigh Filmer were the other finalists.

The McNamaras enjoyed an outstanding season around the globe, including leading the UCLA Bruins to their firstever NCAA beach volleyball national championship with All-Tournament Team honours.

They were also among eight pairs from across the US to receive All-American status for the third consecutive time.

The girls also spent time on the pro circuit — winning silver at the NORCECA stop in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic in October and a fourth place finish at a FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour in Mexico to conclude their competitive season.

They have now begun their senior season at UCLA where the No. 1 ranked Bruins are off to an undefeated start.

The Sport BC Awards recognize the province’s best in amateur sport including athletes, coaches, and officials for outstanding performances in their sport over the 2018 season.
