Firefighters knock down massive barn blaze IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Thirty-seven Delta firefighters battled a massive barn fire in Ladner Tuesday morning. Fire Chief Dave Wood said the department responded to a report of smoke coming from a barn at 4050 46A St., at 10:40 a.m. He said crews arriving on scene found a large, two-storey wood-frame farm structure fully involved, with heavy fire through the roof and a large column of black smoke visible across the area. “Crews battled hard to bring the fire under control, deploying multiple attack lines and master streams to protect adjacent vehicles, equipment and neighbouring structures while working to knock down the main
body of fire,” said Wood. “Due to the size and intensity of the fire, nine off-duty members were called in to support the incident and maintain emergency coverage for the rest of the community.” The Delta Fire Department deployed eight fire apparatus and 28 on-duty firefighters, while nine off-duty members were called in. BC Ambulance was on stand-by at the scene. No firefighters were injured. Wood said the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. “Fire investigators were on scene for the duration of the firefight but, due to the heat, have not yet been able to access the site,” he said. “A complete investigation will occur once the scene is safe to enter.”

Generations of Guichons return to Ladner SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It was a big, unique reunion of a family that spans most of the history of Delta, celebrating more than 145 years of the Guichon family in the community. Family members from nearby and throughout B.C., as well as other parts of Canada, gathered at Ladner’s Memorial Park on a sunny Saturday, Sept. 5, a celebration for a family that is ingrained in the fabric of the rich history of Delta. A pioneer farming family whose various members continue to work the land, the Guichons can trace their local roots back to the founding of Felix Farms in the 1800s by Laurent Guichon. Members of the family have been growing and harvesting potatoes and other produce in Delta ever since. By the way, that’s how Port Guichon in Ladner got its name. The family has also been integral throughout the many decades in local sports, government and community organizations. Branches of the Guichon family have also been key figures in other communities, including some still involved in cattle ranching in the Nicola Valley. Saturday’s gathering had many children getting to meet for the first time highlighting the younger adult generation’s successful effort to bring together what is still, after all these years, a close-knit family. “I’m just happy to be here and this is wonderful to see,” said Lorraine, 103, who still lives in Ladner and enjoys reading the Optimist newspaper. Danielle, one of the organizers who runs Backroads Family Farm Market with sister Alicia, a current member of Delta city council, said, “It’s very unique

One Delta outlines plan for safe school routes IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
One Delta’s school trustee candidates have announced their plan for safe routes to schools in Delta. In a news release issued Aug. 31, One Delta’s school board team says it will work closely with families, schools and community partners to make it safer and easier for children to get to and from school every day. “Safe routes strengthen our neighbourhoods, reduce congestion and help build a community where children can walk, ride and grow with confidence,” says One Delta school board candidate Val Windsor. “One Delta’s school board team is proposing practical, meaningful steps that give families real reassurance that their kids are protected and supported every day.” Ensuring students have safe, reliable routes is essential to their well-being, independence and success. The One Delta team says it is committed to practical, community-driven improvements that reflect the needs of Delta’s neighbourhoods.

• Identify safer walking and cycling routes, along with practical upgrades such as improved crossings, better sightlines and missing sidewalks. • Reduce congestion at school entrances by supporting safe drop-off locations and encouraging families, who can do so, to walk the final portion of the trip. • Support walk zones and walkingschool-bus initiatives so more children can safely walk with family, friends or supervised groups. • Promote age-appropriate roadsafety education and support enforcement of rules around e-bikes and e-scooters, while working with partners to strengthen Delta’s existing Vision Zero strategy. “Families want to know their children are safe in school and we need to work together to ensure they can get to class safely as well,” added One Delta mayoral candidate Dylan Kruger. “This is an opportunity for all partners to work together to ensure our neighbourhoods work for the people who live there and ensure every child has a safe route to school.”

Delta First calls on Ottawa to guarantee RCMP capacity for expanded Roberts Bank port IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta First mayoral candidate Melissa Granum is calling on the federal government to provide clear assurances to the City of Delta that adequate policing and security resources will be in place to protect Roberts Bank as the port continues to expand. In a news release issued Sept. 1, Delta First says the expansion of Roberts Bank will bring increased economic activity, more workers, more transportation movement and greater importance to critical infrastructure in Delta. Granum, who worked for nearly two decades in senior civilian public safety roles, including 12 years with Delta Police Department, says law enforcement resources must keep pace with that growth. “Delta is home to one of Canada’s most important trade and transportation hubs, and with that comes significant security responsibilities,” said Granum. “Before further expansion moves ahead, Delta residents deserve to know that the RCMP will have the resources necessary to properly protect the port and the surrounding community.” Granum is calling on the Government of Canada and the RCMP to work directly with the City of Delta
to provide assurances regarding: • Adequate RCMP staffing and resources to respond to the increased demands created by port expansion. • The capacity to provide effective policing and security at the growing Roberts Bank port and surrounding critical infrastructure. • A clear assessment of the additional policing and security pressures created by future port expansion. • A commitment that Delta taxpayers will not be left to absorb costs associated with policing responsibilities arising from nationally significant infrastructure. “Roberts Bank is critical infrastructure for Canada and a major gateway for our national economy,” Granum said. “If Ottawa is expanding the port, Ottawa must also ensure the security resources are in place to protect it.” Granum says she supports strong relationships between local, provincial and federal agencies and believes Delta must have a seat at the table when decisions are being made that directly affect the safety of its residents. “As mayor, I will be asking the tough questions and seeking concrete answers. We should not be told after an incident that resources were inadequate. We need assurances, planning and accountability before the expansion is complete.”

Kruger outlines vision for an affordable Delta IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
One Delta mayoral candidate Dylan Kruger says he is drawing a sharp contrast with opponent George Harvie’s plan to raise taxes. “What George Harvie and the Achieving for Delta candidates are proposing is simply wrong for our community,” said Kruger in a news release. “One Delta believes new taxes or levies, or whatever name they are given, are another cost that residents simply cannot absorb right now. Instead of relying on the same old, tired political playbook, our commitment is straightforward: no new taxes, levies or fees.” Kruger was responding to Harvie’s pledge to impose a new community levy to fund a recreation centre in North Delta. While One Delta also champions building the new North Delta facility, Kruger insists the project must be funded through growth and investment, not the pockets of homeowners. “Building Delta and ensuring fairness

invest in Delta without adding financial pressure on residents.” One Delta says it has a two-part strat-
egy for funding major infrastructure projects: securing a fair share of federal and provincial investment and expanding Delta’s commercial and industrial sectors. “We will stand up for Delta and make the case that our community deserves meaningful support for the major projects planned in our region,” says Kruger. “Delta will play a significant role in developing these projects and residents should benefit from that.” One Delta says they also plan to focus on growing the business side of the community. With roughly half of Delta’s tax revenue already generated by businesses, expanding this base naturally reduces the tax burden on residential homeowners. “This isn’t about raising business taxes. It’s about bringing more businesses and investment to Delta, especially in our industrial areas,” says Kruger. “That’s why we’ll create an economic development office to support local businesses, fight tariffs and attract new investment. We have a plan. Others just have words and new taxes.”

One Delta school trustee candidate drops out IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
One Delta school board trustee candidate Surj Uppal has withdrawn from the municipal election. Last week, some posts on his social media page came to light and were pointed out by residents on other community Facebook pages as being “inappropriate.” However, Uppal gave no definitive reason why he withdrew his candidacy. He issued a statement on social media. “As much as I cherish the chance to serve my community, sometimes
the best path forward is to step aside,” said Uppal in a statement he personally released on social media. “I’ve always been one to get into the game rather than watching from the sidelines, but I have decided to withdraw my candidacy for the school board. “The focus should be on what is best for the students and the educational decisions ahead. I’m deeply grateful to those who supported my campaign. For those who didn’t, I appreciate the constructive criticism. “Moving forward, I look forward to continu-
ing my work as a volunteer and supporting Delta in any way I can. In my opinion, it is the best place on earth.” The One Delta campaign also issued a brief statement to the Optimist saying: “Surj Uppal has decided to withdraw his candidacy for school trustee to the Delta School District board of education. “Surj made the right decision, ensuring the conversation is focused on building a stronger future for Delta students. “One Delta will move to identify a new candidate before the nomination period closes,” said the campaign.

OPINION Bye, bye Jerry Editor’s Note IAN JACQUES
I
t’s a classic move when a government does not want any media scrutiny or backlash from the public. The news release came into my email inbox around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4 - the end of the day - going into a long weekend. The news release, “Metro Vancouver announces leadership transition” outlined the ouster of embattled chief administrative officer Jerry Dobrovolny. Under Dobrovolny’s watch, there has been scandal after scandal. The ballooning costs of the North Shore wastewater treatment plant, exorbitant travel costs from staff and Metro mayors and directors, and mis-management at every level you can think of. Yet, in the news release, Metro board chair Mike Hurley praises Dobrovolny - thanking him for his many years of public service and contributions to the organization. The release reads like more of a letter of recommendation rather than a letter of dismissal. It just shows how out of touch this organization is. How this organization continues to slap taxpayers in the face. How this organization is out of control. The news release, at the end of the day on a Friday allows for little scrutiny. No one from Metro is talking. No one from Metro will say how much Dobrovolny is getting in his exit severance package. But you can bet it’s going to be a big dollar. After all, Dobrovolny earned well over $500,000 in salary and benefits last year, so it stands to reason he will be leaving with a nice compensation package. His long-awaited dismissal is long-over due. Dobrovolny should have been fired years ago. Heather McNell, the organization’s deputy chief administrative officer, policy and planning, is now the acting CAO. She inherits a huge mess and an organization that the public can no longer trust. I wish her luck. She is going to need it.
Nature’s rhythm matches political change ahead
T
his year the transition from summer to fall came early. First, the Canada geese arrived overhead with their heavy bellies and rhythmic calls. Then I heard the crickets rubbing their wings in the tall grasses along the dike, and to my amazement I discovered a praying mantis dancing on a leaf in my garden. Deep in the night I hear the coyotes howling in their summer dens, and when the blackberries turned soft I knew the sun was turning towards the winter equinox. There’s something else changing this autumn-- our local government. There were early signs too. To my amazement, a candidate for mayor showed up at my door in June. It felt premature, but in South Delta we take our local politics seriously. In the hierarchy of
Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT
government, municipal elections may be the least sexy, yet local government dictates the minutiae of our lives. From garbage pick up to playgrounds, our daily lives are ruled by bylaws and budgets. This year’s local elections are emotionally heavy as South Delta deals with the rapid growth of housing. Residents have taken to the streets, literally, to push back against over-building. Nothing mobilizes pro-
test like a proposal for a 50-unit condo project going up beside your single-family home. While I’m against over development, there is a real need for mixed-housing in our communities in order to attract and keep a younger demographic. Infrastructure, health care and traffic are taking a hit with our city’s fastpaced growth and it’s only going to get worse. As the bright orange pumpkins in the fields reveal themselves, the campaign signs along our roads and lawns will appear. There may never be such an important election because the next mayor and council will make decisions that will affect generations to come. It’s vital we listen carefully to what they offer. As the trees lose their leaves, get prepared to choose who will manage the cold winds ahead.

Paton talks with RCMP about seat deal
NOTARY PUBLIC
IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Delta South MLA Ian Paton, now sitting as an independent when he left the B.C. Conservative caucus on Aug. 24, has now been interviewed by the RCMP as police look into whether an offer made to Paton was unethical and possibly illegal. As reported earlier by Lodestar Media, when Paton was still part of the Conservative caucus, Paton said a request was made via phone by then chief of staff Chris Delaney in June offering Paton a new advisory role with the party in exchange for giving up his seat in Delta South so leader Kerry-Lynne Findlay could run in a byelection. “I was at RCMP headquarters in Surrey on Sept. 2 and spoke with two investigators,” said Paton. “I told them that on the night of June 30 I got a call from the chief of staff asking whether I would step down because KerryLynne Findlay would like to run in Delta South. I said I was not interested. He said we would offer you a role as a policy adviser on agriculture issues in exchange for the same salary as an MLA. I told them I like what I’m doing and I simply was not interested.” Paton said the investigators asked a few follow-up questions and the interview concluded. Paton is one of nine MLAs that have quit the Conservative caucus to sit as independents. Findlay issued a statement on Sept. 2 calling any allegations against her and her team as part of an escalating effort to derail her campaign in the Abbotsford-Mission by-election. “These allegations are baseless. What we are seeing is a coordinated political attack designed to sidetrack our campaign at the very moment we are taking our message directly to the people of Abbotsford-Mission,” said Findlay. “I have spent my career serving in positions of significant public trust. I am a lawyer, a former Canadian Human Rights Tribunal judge, a King’s Counsel and a member of the King’s Privy Council for Canada. I served British Columbians as a federal cabinet minister and later as chief Opposition whip in the Conservative caucus. I have been

vetted numerous times to be given the highest security clearances. “Those responsibilities carry serious ethical and professional obligations. I have always understood those obligations, and I have conducted myself accordingly.” Also on Sept. 2, Delaney tendered his resignation. Findlay named deputy chief of staff, Reann Gasper, to the role of chief of staff. Gasper resigned as MLA in Abbotsford-Mission allowing for the byelection in the hopes of getting Findlay elected so she has a seat and can sit in the legislature. “I want to thank Chris for his service and for putting the interests of British Columbia and our team first,” said Findlay. In a statement, Delaney said he resigned because he wanted to remove any distraction from her campaign to win the byelection. “In no way does my resignation have anything to do with not supporting Kerry-Lynne,” he said. “On the contrary, I am more committed than ever to her success. But the enemies of B.C. and the enemies of democracy, like those who have walked away in previous days, are determined to prevaricate, misrepresent, mischaracterize and outright lie to try and stop Kerry-Lynne from standing in their way of delivering B.C. into their hands. I stand behind Kerry-Lynne 100 per cent. She is going to win in Abbotsford-Mission and begin the process of taking back our province before it is too late. Independent MLAs Peter Milobar and Ian Paton have welcomed fellow independent MLAs Rosalyn Bird, Bruce Banman and Á’a:líya Warbus into a new, as of yet, unnamed provincial party, bringing its standing in the legislature to five seats. These five MLAs are part of nine MLAs who have resigned and left the B.C. Conservative Party caucus in the past few weeks. “We’re building on the momentum Peter and Ian have created over the last week and a half toward giving voters a stable, thoughtful alternative to the NDP,” said Bird. “This party will be focused on the issues the NDP has neglected for far too long: the economy, health care, affordability, taxation and land rights. These are issues that shape the everyday lives of
British Columbians.” The new party will hold an internal leadership vote before the legislature returns on Oct. 5. Milobar will serve as interim leader until the caucus elects a permanent leader. “We’re working hard, every day, to build the party British Columbia needs right now,” said Milobar. “The support we’ve seen from across the province has been overwhelming, and people are stepping up to help us bring this party to life in a very short time. City explains its reserves SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It may look like the city is flush with cash at first glance, but the total listed as Delta’s reserve balance doesn’t tell the whole story. During council’s discussion several weeks ago on the city’s 2025 audited consolidated financial statements, the eye-popping total outlined as reserves and unappropriated surplus was once again raised to clarify for the public. According to the report, the total was $238.4 million, up from $226.7 million in 2024. That number is comprised of $72.9 million in unappropriated surplus including: General ($37 million), Water ($17.7 million), Sewer ($9.9 million) and Solid waste ($8.3 million), while $35.5 million was in restricted statutory reserves, $56.9 million for capital projects in progress and $73.1 million in other non-statutory reserves. Navin Chand, General Manager of Finance, explained that most of the money is restricted, including funding tied to projects. He said reserves fall into three
categories including restricted statutory reserves meant for specific areas approved by council, such as the equipment reserve or artificial turf replacement reserve. Another category is capital projects in progress, so much of that money listed is earmarked for projects that are already underway. The non-statutory reserves are a little more flexible, he said, although those funds have been mostly allocated for projects in the five-year plan. Coun. Dylan Kruger asked what should be a “healthy percentage” for an annual target of a budget to be in reserves, including general reserves for unexpected events such as dealing with the Westham Island Bridge accident. Chand responded typically a target level would be in the 15-to-20-per cent range. Noting funding needs to be available to deal with events such as the Burns Bog fire a few years ago, Mayor George Harvie said, “Sometimes when people see when they go through the numbers, that we’re flush. But that’s not the case. We need to ensure we have those backups in case of emergencies.”

The City of Delta recently announced that the new bike park is now open to the public at Kensington Park North. The bike park in East Ladner is open daily from dawn to dusk and features an asphalt pump track, a dirt jump area with four levels of difficulty from beginners to more advanced, a staging area for dirt jump lines, a seating and rest area, as well as an accessible pathway connecting to the existing parking lot. The asphalt track covers an area of over 1,000-square-metres and is 107-metres-long, while the dirt jumps cover 2,600-square-metres with four jump lines and runs 206-metres-long. The city also notes that the existing pump track at Holly Park will remain open for riders for the time being, while a broader master plan for Holly Park is considered. The Kensington Park project had a budget of $500,000. A final concept design was approved last fall. A land exchange that was part of an adjoining townhouse development resulted in a modified Holly Park

Jesus will hold you fast Sometimes we can get it in our heads that following Jesus is like a tightrope act. We are told to “Be holy as I am holy” and that the way is narrow – and it’s like we feel we must carefully balance our whole life while walking across a tightrope. But following Jesus is nothing like walking a tightrope; it’s sitting in his safe and secure fortress. This is the promise of Psalm 125. In our journey of faith, Psalm 125 reminds us about a simple truth: our trust is in Jesus Christ alone, and nothing can separate us from his love. This psalm tells us: we don’t put our trust in our own confidence of how we feel about God. We don’t put our trust in ourselves, and our own
in keeping and holding on to you. If you have put your trust in Jesus, then may you know – deep down in your bones – that nothing can separate you from his love. Because Jesus is sure of you. And if you have not put your trust in Jesus, you can take that step today. You can simply say to him: “Jesus – doing it my own way isn’t working, and I want to do it your way. Forgive me for ever trying to trust in something else. Here’s my heart. Here’s my life. All I am is yours. I trust in you alone.” And as you trust in him, and rest in his promise, may you also rest in his peace – which keeps guard over your heart and mind in Christ.

ability to hold fast to Jesus. Instead, our trust is in the Lord. It’s in Jesus. He is the one who holds us fast. And your trust – your faith – is not in your own ability to hold onto him; rather, it is in the fact that he is holding fast to you. He is personally invested

Tru Charitable Foundation, formerly First West Foundation, has awarded $67,000 in grants so far this year to Delta-area charities. Among this year’s recipients is the Heron Hospice Society, one of several local organizations receiving support through the Foundation’s Envision Financial Regional Community. The Heron Hospice Society received $20,000 to support the continued delivery of free counselling and community-based wellness programs. They provide compassionate care and support to people with life-limiting illnesses and their families, as well as bereavement care to individuals who are grieving the loss of a loved one. “When my wife passed away recently, just shy of our 49th wedding anniversary, I didn’t know what to do or where to turn. Two friends, whose advice I value and respect, encouraged me to reach out to Heron Hospice Society of Delta, for grief counselling,” says

Since 1996, Tru Charitable Foundation has awarded more than $15 million in grants to charities supporting communities served by Envision Financial and the other local brands of Tru Cooperative Bank. In 2026, the Foundation is investing $1.839 million through 19 endowments to support registered charities in 34 communities across British Columbia. “Strong communities are built by organizations that understand local needs and are deeply connected to the people they serve,” says Tracy Fortino, Executive Director of Tru Charitable Foundation. “We are proud to invest in the people and organizations working every day to create healthier, more resilient, and more inclusive communities. These grants are about more than funding projects—they’re about supporting lasting change and helping communities for generations to come.” -Submitted

Funeral pre-planning with a professional eases anxiety The death of a loved is difficult to confront. Emotions are elevated and grief is prominent, which can make it hard to make important decisions. Quite often several people need to come together to make decisions necessary for a family member’s funeral arrangements. There also is a financial component to consider. Funeral pre-planning is a good way for individuals to make a difficult time a little more manageable for their survivors. Funeral homes frequently work handin-hand with individuals and families to customize pre-planning packages and facilitate the process. Here’s a rundown of pre-planning as individuals consider their options. Explore your options Pre-planning a funeral enables people to consider all of the options without the time constraints of making funeral arrangements directly after the passing of a loved one. A knowledgeable staff member at a funeral home, can explain the offerings and answer any questions. Straightforward process Unless an individual has planned a funeral in the past, there could be a lot of unknowns. Funeral homes handle these events every day and can guide families through the intricacies of the process with ease. Most

have pre-planning kits that include all of the essentials of the process, such as choosing caskets, deciding on prayer cards and designing floral arrangements. Avoid confrontations Working directly with a professional also helps alleviate the burden on family members, who may not agree on arrangements or concur on what they
believe would be a loved one’s final wishes. When preplanning a funeral, individuals can spell out in their own words exactly what they desire and even finance the funeral in advance. Establish a payment plan A funeral home staff member can go over the various ways to fund funeral expenses, and may work out a payment schedule to spread out the expense over a period of time. He or she also may explain how funeral prearrangement can be a way to “spend down” assets in a way that protects those monies from look-back periods when determining eligibility for certain assisted living or nursing facilities should that be required in the future. Works with religious officials Very often a funeral home is a conduit that facilitates all facets of the funeral process. They may reach out to a preferred house of worship to organize a mass or other religious service, and will also contact the cemetery and work with them to secure a plot and deed. This also alleviates pressure down the line on grieving family members who need time to mourn. Pre-planning a funeral merits consideration. Working with a trusted funeral home removes much of the pressure during such difficult times. -Metro Creative

Here are some tips for writing an obituary Coping with the death of a loved one is never easy. Even those comforted by the acknowledgment that a recently deceased friend or family member lived a full life may still struggle with the sense of loss that comes with the passing of a loved one. Obituaries do not necessarily have to follow a formula, but the following tips can help people compose an obituary that conveys who their deceased loved one was and how much this person meant to friends and family. Contact the Optimist: Before writing an obituary, contact the Optimist and we can help you and answer your questions. Do not feel obliged to include cause of death: While acquaintances who first learn of a person’s death via an obituary may be curious about cause of death, loved ones of the
deceased do not have to include such information if they are uncomfortable doing so. Include some biographical information: Obituaries are typically more than simple announcements of death. Some simple biological information can shed light on who the deceased was and his or her personal and professional accomplishments. Include donation information: Well-wishers who read the obituary may want to send flowers or make donations to express their condolences. Include the family preference regarding flowers or donations in the obituary. Include visitation and funeral information: Be sure to include the day, location and visitation hours for viewings. If the funeral will be public, include the day and time of the funeral as well. -Metro Creative

The loss of a friend or loved one is seldom easy, particularly if a person had been suffering from an illness. Close friends and family honor the memories of their deceased loved ones in different ways. Charitable giving can be a great way to honor a loved one’s memory while helping others. Survivors often find comfort in the knowledge that they can do some good in the name of a loved one. Tributes or memorial gifts can be approached in different ways and serve as an ongoing reminder of a deceased loved one. Create a charitable foundation Those who have the time and resources can establish their own charitable groups in the decedent’s name. This method of charity requires the most time and effort, but can prove to be quite an impactful memorial. Individuals who would like to go this route can consult with financial and tax professionals about the best way to establish a charitable group. Community foundation Families can focus on something their loved one cared deeply about,
such as animal rescue, children, the arts, or even particular places in a community, such as a local park. Medical tribute Memorial gifts that assist medical associations or groups working to find cures or offer treatments for diseases are quite popular. If a loved one passed away due to a specific illness, it is common to ask for donations to a specific organization that specializes in information and services pertaining to that illness. Many such groups have a “donate in memory” option on their websites. Oftentimes families are notified regarding who made memorial donations in their loved ones’ names, but the amount of the donation need not be revealed. Finish their work If the decedent was engaged in a charitable project prior to their death, volunteer to help complete that project. Giving back after the death of a loved one is a great way to keep the memory of that person alive. -Metro Creative

AT HOME
Tips to winterize a home
It’s not uncommon to spend a lot of time out of the house when the weather outside is warm. The popularity of outdoor living spaces has made it easier than ever to enjoy nature without leaving home, which can generally be done from late spring to mid-fall each year in many regions. But as fall creeps toward winter and temperatures drop, it’s time to head back indoors. Check your carbon monoxide detectors: Fall is a great season to open the windows in many regions that feature prototypical autumn air. But the crisp air of fall will eventually give way to much colder air, at which time the windows will be closed and likely remain shut for months to come. When windows remain closed for long periods of time, such as in winter, the buildup of CO, which can come from sources like water heaters, gas stoves, fireplaces, and clothes dryers,
can poison residents over time. CO detectors are a safety net against such a fate, but they must be operating at peak capacity in order to be effective. As fall winds down, check all CO detectors to make sure they’re working properly and replace any that are not. Check for drafts: Check around windows and doors throughout the home to see if there are any gaps that are allowing air from outside to enter the home. If daytime temperatures are mild well into the fall, then it can be difficult to see if there are any drafts before the sun goes down. Conduct this check in the evenings when temperatures are a little more chilly and leaks are easier to detect. If drafts are detected, apply weather stripping around doors and windows that do not require replacement. If there’s drafts around aging windows and doors, consider replacing them. -Metro Creative

A roof is a vital component of a home that protects the structure from the elements and ensures that sun, rain, wind, and snow do not compromise the integrity of interior spaces. Homeowners who stay in a home for many years will likely need to replace a roof at some point. Choosing when to replace the roof may come down to selecting the right season. Experts typically consider fall the prime time to upgrade a roof for a variety of reasons. Moderate temperatures: Fall weather tends to be comfortable in many regions of the country. Fall temperatures are better suited for roofing and allow materials to work the best. When temperatures are too hot, shingles can become soft and prone to scuffing, while cold temperatures can make materials brittle and difficult to seal. Comfort for workers: The same
moderate conditions can make it easier for roofing contractors to get the work done. It can be extremely hot on a roof during summer, necessitating frequent breaks for workers. Winter weather conditions are not ideal for working on a roof, with snow and ice making things slippery. Fall weather can help workers feel more comfortable. Avoid the rush: Spring and early summer are peak seasons for roofing contractors due to post-winter repairs. Homeowners may experience shorter wait times, better pricing and flexible scheduling if they opt for a fall roof replacement. Prepare for winter: Getting a roof in the fall means having a new and functional barrier against winter storms that can be hard on old roofs. It also means the roof will be ready for rainy, spring weather. Fall is an ideal time to replace a roof for many reasons. -Metro Creative

Festival highlights our community connections
Now in its fourth year, Barnside Harvest Festival returns to Paterson Park in Ladner from Sept. 11 to 13, bringing the community together for three days of world-class music, local food and drink, family fun and genuine Delta hospitality. Since launching in 2023, the festival has welcomed nearly 80,000 attendees, becoming Ladner’s signature summer celebration for locals and visitors from afar. When the festival co-founders, John Donnelly and Ken Malenstyn, first presented their plan to host a major rock festival in Ladner, the stated goal was to achieve 5,000 attendees. Once the year one line-up was announced, the community truly embraced the event buying more than 10,000 tickets on the opening weekend of sales, and the producers had to apply for an increased site capacity. Barnside Harvest Festival is now firmly established as the largest outdoor live music festival in the entire region! This year’s festival raises the bar with two headline performers each evening, creating a weekend that
spans generations and genres. The festival will also bring back two crowd favourites from last year to the Main Stage, including local surf-rock group Uncle Strut and rising country stars The Heels. Friday night kicks off with Vancouver favourites Marianas Trench and rising Canadian rock artist JJ Wilde, alongside performances from Hotel Mira, Fake Shark, and several emerging local acts. Saturday features one of the festival’s strongest lineups to date, headlined by Smash Mouth and Canadian rock legends Big Wreck. Fans can also enjoy performances from The Washboard Union, Daniel Wesley, Jake Vaadeland, the Sturgeon River Boys, Jackson Hollow, and more throughout the day. The festival wraps up Sunday with two iconic Canadian artists taking the stage: Tom Cochrane, known for classics like Life Is a Highway, and Kim Mitchell, whose hits including Patio Lanterns and Go for Soda have become staples of Canadian rock. Sunday’s lineup also includes Grapes of Wrath, Limblifter, Australia’s Kim Churchill and Imogen
Enjoy the Barnside Harvest Festival
Clark, plus a variety of regional performers. While the music is the main attraction, Barnside Harvest Festival is more than a concert experience as festival-goers can explore the Vancity Artisan Market, browse local vendors, enjoy cuisine from 20 food trucks, visit the new Delta Discovery Centre and TFN Pavilion, and bring the whole family to the White Spot Family Zone. The popular BC Craft Beer Corner also returns on Sunday, showcasing 30 craft breweries from across the province. Community support includes the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club Charity barbecue, Heron Hospice’s custom guitar raffle, Delta Firefighters 50/50 draw and hundreds of volunteers from Ladner Rotary Club and community-minded individuals. Produced by Barnside Brewing Co., the festival proudly highlights locally crafted beer brewed from grain grown on the brewery’s Ladner farms, alongside B.C. wines, ciders, and genuinely fun experience for everyone. -Submitted

Track star wins national gold
North Delta’s Tanaz Aulakh Kahlon, recently returned from the National Legion Track and Field National Championships in Regina, where she represented Team BC/ Yukon. The 17-year-old track and field athlete secured national titles in the 400m hurdles, the 400m sprint, and was part of the winning 4x400m relay team. She crossed the line in the 400 hurdles with a blazing time of 58.63 seconds, setting a championship record. Her triple gold and impressive performances earned Kahlon the Leroy Washburn Award, which is awarded to the top female athlete of the entire national U18 championship. She was selected to Team BC for the third time, an impressive feat that few accomplish. She has been running track and field since elementary school where she developed a love for the sport and competition. A member of Universal Athletics Club, she trains at the North Delta Secondary track and field facil-
ity with coach Jessie Dosanjh. Universal Athletics is excited to see her represent the next generation on the national stage. She holds provincial titles in the 400m sprint and 400m hurdles. More so, in her age group, her current personal best time in the 400m ranks her second in the entire country this year, and her 400m hurdle ranks her the best U18 hurdler in Canada this year, and second in all of North America. “Sseeing the hard work at the right time pays off. It makes all of the effort, early morning training sessions and commitment worth it,” she said. Looking ahead, she is entering her senior year at École Burnsview Secondary where she will be completing a double dogwood degree as part of the French Immersion program. She is actively preparing for university recruitment, with eyes set on NCAA Division 1 track and field programs. - Submitted

Lakers win youth hoops tournament at DSS On Aug. 28, Delta Secondary wrapped up summer with a basketball tournament for boys from Ladner and Tsawwassen entering grades 6, 7 and 8. During the past few months, the players took part in free, weekly drop-in sessions at DSS, sharpening their skills and competing in fast-paced scrimmages. Experienced coaches from Ladner and South Delta referees and clock operators generously volunteered their time. The final session saw the boys split into four teams named after NBA franchises. The Lakers went undefeated to claim the championship. “Congratulations to all the boys who came out for the sessions! They achieved their two goals — having fun and improving their skills!” said organizers Ryan Fraser and Mike Coughlin. - Submitted

William “Bill” Clapperton, Age 70, May 17, 1956 passed away peacefully on May 26, 2026 in Ladner, British Columbia. Bill spent his career serving others as a firefighter. After a brave and dedicated career, he enjoyed a well-deserved retirement splitting his time between Delta, Hawaii and sailing on his boat. When he wasn’t on duty, Bill was happiest out on the water sailing, playing and coaching lacrosse or relaxing on the beaches of Hawaii. Known for his incredible smile, laugh and sense of humour. Bill could always be seen riding his bike around town or kayaking in the river. Bill approached both his work and his hobbies with true passion. Bill is survived by his loving family, including daughter Leanne (Liam), girlfriend Becky, sister Trish and cousins Carol, Joe and Judy. He will be missed by all his family, friends, lacrosse and firefighter communities. He was predeceased by his parents Pat and Rod. A celebration of Bill’s life will be held at Fisherman’s Hall in Ladner on Sept 19 at 2-6pm. Aloha shirts are encouraged. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Hawaii Youth Lacrosse. https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/PG25465BY2P6

(Sandra) Gail Huscroft died peacefully at Melville Hospice on August 6, 2026, at the age of 82. Gail grew up surrounded by extended family in the neighbourhood on Lavender Road in Toronto and spent her childhood summers at the family cottage built by her father on Georgian Bay. Gail met James “Jim” Huscroft on a High Park Ski Club cruise on Lake Ontario. They had known each other only several weeks when Gail left for several months in Ireland, where she told potential suitors she thought she had already met the man she would marry. She was right. Within weeks of returning, they were engaged and then shared 58 years of marriage. Having gone to teacher's college, Gail taught before staying home with her young children and later returned to work with the federal government. Her aptitude for numbers and exceptional organizational skills eventually led her to become a contract officer with Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Family was always Gail’s priority. She was a devoted advocate for her children’s education, yet success was never a condition of her support. She believed in them without burdening them with expectations and greeted their accomplishments with genuine delight. After 19 years in Ottawa, Gail and Jim moved to Ladner, where they pursued their love of sailing. They sailed their own boat around Vancouver Island and spent many summers exploring the coast. Gail also loved more land-based travel and creative pursuits. She sewed, knitted, quilted, made pottery with Delta Potters and painted, leaving a legacy of craftwork made with love. She also treasured her community of friends and was an enthusiastic member of the Red Hat Society. For their 50th anniversary, Gail gathered all ten family members together for a month in France, one of many adventures shared across generations. Her grandchildren were among her greatest joys and an endless source of pride and wonder. Her life was defined by love, devotion and pride in family, sailing, creativity, friendship, a good sense of fun, and an openness to new experiences. Gail is survived by her husband Jim; children Crystal Huscroft (Christian St-Pierre) and Mark Huscroft (Lea-Marie Bowes-Lyon); grandchildren Samuel, Emeric, Charlotte and Theo; and sister Brenda Edmonds (Charles). She was predeceased by her parents, Alexander Hassard and Dorothy Pantry.
It is with sadness that we announce the passing of David in his 90th year. He was born to Walter and Eileen Conder in St. Boniface, Manitoba. His childhood years were spent in Sooke on Vancouver Island, where he made many lifelong friends. After graduating from U.B.C. with a chemistry degree, he moved to Sarnia, Ontario, to begin a career with Dow Chemical. He met his wife, Jean, in Sarnia and shared with her 62 years of happy marriage. David returned to B.C. in 1967 to teach chemistry at B.C.I.T., where he remained until his retirement. Those years were spent in Tsawwassen proudly raising his son, David, and his daughter, Jill. He loved to camp, run for exercise, and visit the gym. He enjoyed his cat house guests. David is survived by his loving wife, Jean (Brandon); greatly loved daughter, Jill Sutcliffe; grandson and granddaughter, Luke and Brooke Sutcliffe; sister Geraldine Sora and her two sons, Selim and Erol. He was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Eileen, and his older sister, Joyce Reid. David will be greeted in heaven by his son, David Mark, who went ahead on the same date in September 2009. We find this so comforting. He will be remembered by extended family and friends in Ontario, British Columbia, and Australia. An informal gathering for family and friends will be held at a later date. Keep David’s memory alive by holding your family close while they are still with you.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Trevor Edward Frederick on July 27, at age 53. Trevor grew up in Tsawwassen, where he attended high school and played on the local football teams. He lived in BC, finally settling in Sechelt, and owned a small construction company. He introduced innovative designs to his clients and was known for his excellent management of job sites. In spite of the challenges of dyslexia, Trevor contributed extensively to any job he undertook. He was the victim of a car accident in 2018, and after a number of surgeries, life became more difficult, but he still maintained a positive attitude in his business and life. Trevor was the cherished son of John, who predeceased him in 2015, and Gail, who gladly became a loving mother when Trevor came to live with them at the age of nine. He lived life with a generous spirit and a great sense of humour. He will be missed by Gail, his cousins, nieces, extended family and friends here, and his extended family in Ontario.
