Voters to select new city council in heated election SANDOR GYARMATI

Advance voting for Delta’s 2026 municipal election is in the books with General Voting Day set for this Saturday (Oct. 17). Eligible voters will elect one mayor, six councillors and seven school trustees to serve a four-year term. According to Delta’s chief election officer, there were a total of 8,306 ballots cast during three days of advance voting (Oct. 3, 6, and 7). A total of 2,655 ballots were cast on the first day. In the 2022 race, the overall voter turnout in Delta, including advance polls, was 28.52 per cent. In 2022, out of an estimated 79,423 eligible voters, a total of 22,655 ballots were cast, with 12,006 votes cast in South Delta and 9,700 votes cast in North Delta. This time around, the voter turnout could be higher, with the race for mayor and council a more divisive and heated affair, possibly resembling the 2018 election. In that Delta race, the overall voter turnout was almost 43 per cent, which was among the highest in B.C.
General Voting Day for the municipal election is this Saturday, Oct. 17. Residents can check online if they are registered to vote by visiting: delta.ca/ elections/voters. Those who are registered should have received a voting card in the mail with information about their voting location. On the day of voting, registered and eligible electors will need to present

their voter information card and one piece of identification. Those who did not receive a voter card can still register at the time of voting by bringing two pieces of identification. The IDs should show the elector’s name on both pieces, the address on at least one piece, and a signature on at least one piece.

Eby signs public health care guarantee in Delta
B.C. NDP leader David Eby talked about health care at a town hall event at the Sunbury Hall in North Delta Thanksgiving Monday (Oct. 12).
recruiting in order to get more American health professionals into our province. We also need to train, practically, a new program for internationally-trained doctors and nurses to get them into action right here in B.C., especially for those who commit to living in rural areas of the province. We are committed to that program and that training as quickly as possible.” The Optimist asked Eby about the Beedie long-term care centre at Delta Hospital that was paused along with several other long-term care projects due to financial constraints. Eby said those projects are back on track. “With the funding secured through the B.C.-Canada Prosperity agreement, the BC NDP will move ahead with seven long-term care projects, including the Beedie long-term care centre, that has been paused earlier this year, using a new model that lowers perbed costs, shortens construction timelines and helps us build beds at scale for the future,” Eby told the Optimist. “These seven projects are in addition to the 16 long-term care projects already completed, seven under construction and 15 more in planning.”
Public Health Care Guarantee, which Eby signed in front of the audience. Eby also took questions from the audience in a town hall-style format regarding pharmacare, the need for family doctors, the wait lists for MRIs and CAT scans, and why so many emergency rooms are facing closures, especially in rural areas of the province. “This is a lack of the doctors and nurses and their ability to provide that care,” he said. “We are building a new medical school down the road in Surrey at SFU and that’s great, that’s good news. We are tripling
New urgent care in North Delta Eby and Schierling also committed to a new urgent and primary care centre in North Delta, if elected. “As a firefighter, I know how much it matters for people to get help when they need it,” said Schierling. “A new urgent and primary care centre would give North Delta residents another place to turn for urgent care and help emergency departments focus on the most serious cases. I’m proud to support a plan that brings care closer to home.” Eby said this builds on the 48 UPCCs already opened across the province, including one in South Delta.

In front of more than 100 supporters and flanked by his Lower Mainland candidates, B.C. NDP leader David Eby talked about health care at a town hall event at the Sunbury Hall in North Delta, Thanksgiving Monday (Oct. 12). In his address, Eby outlined new rules to strengthen public health care in B.C. and guard against U.S.-style privatization. Eby said every BC NDP candidate has signed on to a Public Health Care Guarantee that commits to protecting public health care and stopping out-ofpocket charges, as is happening now in Alberta under a Conservative government. “Universal public health care is an expression of who we are as Canadians. It’s a promise that we take care of each other, no matter who you are or how big your bank account is,” said Eby. “That’s why hundreds of health workers are coming from the U.S. to build their lives here in B.C. They want to focus on the care their patients need, not what an insurance company says they’re qualified for. Every single one of our candidates is committed to protecting what makes us stronger and stopping American-style privatization.” Eby said if re-elected, the NDP will close loopholes that allow clinics to charge user fees and extra billing for publicly insured, medically necessary services. Under Eby’s plan, health authorities will phase out the use of expensive private agency nurses, redirecting savings to expand the Go Health BC program that sends public travel nurses to staff rural emergency rooms. During the town hall, Eby introduced Delta North candidate Todd Schierling who handed him the

Conservatives pledge to build long-term care beds About 7,200 British Columbians are still waiting for a longterm-care bed IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The B.C. Conservatives are also making announcements and campaign commitments around long-term care beds. On Oct. 9, the Conservatives pledged to build more long-term-care beds faster and give seniors waiting for care a real choice in where they receive it. The pledge came a few days prior to BC NDP leader David Eby making the same commitments along with other health-care announcements in a town hall event in North Delta. The Conservatives said in a news release that after nine years of the NDP, 7,200 British Columbians are
waiting for a long-term-care bed. The release said the NDP piled so many unnecessary rules on to carehome designs that some proposed beds reached $1.8 million each. Then, having driven up the costs, David Eby used Budget 2026 to defer seven longterm-care projects across the province, said the release. If elected premier, Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson said he will work with care providers, residents, families and builders to cut unnecessary design rules, protect safety and quality of care, and deliver affordable, high-quality facilities faster. The Conservatives also responded to Eby’s health-care announcements in North Delta. Eby noted that the risk of U.S.-style health care coming to Canada is not hypothetical. He said that last year, Alberta Premier Danielle Smith passed a law allowing doctors to work in both public and private health care and charge patients out of pocket. Those who can pay will be able to jump the queue for surgery.
Eby said that like interim BC Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson, Smith ran on a vague commitment in the last Alberta election to maintain a universally accessible, publicly funded system. “We’ve seen the Conservative playbook in action. They pretend health care is safe to get your vote. Then the moment they get into power, it’s carved up for profit,” said Eby. “The same thing would happen here under Doerkson and the B.C. Conservatives. His Nanaimo candidate called a user-pay model the ‘only solution’ to our health-care challenges. His health critic, Anna Kindy, has openly championed a private, payfor-care system – and Doerkson has refused to rule her out as health minister. All of our candidates can guarantee public health will be protected. Conservatives can’t.” The Conservatives countered by saying Doerkson has already answered this on Oct. 5 when he committed to protecting health care funding and keeping B.C.’s system universal and publicly funded. “David Eby has been premier for
nearly four years, and by his own admission he has failed British Columbians on health care,” Doerkson said in a news release. “He admits people are waiting 50 weeks for surgery on his watch, and his plan to fix it is to tax the doctors who perform them. That is the NDP’s health care plan: tax your way out of a doctor shortage,” the release said. “This is the same premier who promised every British Columbian a family doctor by the end of 2025. More than one million British Columbians still don’t have one. Emergency rooms closed nearly 2,400 times in two years. Specialist waits are the longest on record. That is David Eby’s record, and he will say anything to keep voters from looking at it. “David Eby is increasingly desperate, so we fully expect him to resort to the NDP’s usual fear campaign. He is running on fear because he cannot run on his record,” Doerkson said. He said a Conservative Party of BC government will keep emergency rooms open and recruit the doctors and nurses the province needs.

Delta voters can choose new or familiar faces for B.C. election Four candidates in Delta South riding PHIL MELNYCHUK
p m e l nyc h u k@ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Just after they choose new people to run the city, Delta residents will have to re-do their democratic duty a week later choosing a new provincial government. In the two Delta ridings there are some familiar faces and newcomers from which to choose on Oct. 24. In Delta South, Jason McCormick returns to run for the NDP after previously running for the NDP in the October 2024 B.C. election and in the April 2025 federal election.
McCormick is a bus driver for TransLink and has fought for better public and active transportation for more than a decade, according to the NDP website. As a union activist, and a community leader, he’s also active in the B.C. cycling community and the South Delta Basketball Association, growing the latter to more than 400 youth participants. Incumbent MLA Ian Paton, is running for the B.C. Conservatives. Paton resigned from the party in August and joined CentreBC because of differences with former Conservative leader KerryLynne Findlay. Paton then rejoined the B.C. Conservatives in September when Findlay resigned and an election was called. Paton was previously MLA for the B.C. Liberals/BC
United until that party collapsed in 2023 and some BC United MLAs, such as Paton, were asked to join the BC Conservatives. He has served on the committees on health and agriculture, fish and food, and has been the shadow minister for Agriculture and Food. Paton has been Delta South MLA since 2017 and served as the past president of the East Delta Community Hall Society and as a volunteer Delta firefighter with Hall No. 4. He has also contributed to various local organizations, including the Delta Hospital Foundation, REACH Child and Youth Development Society, and the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust. The Green Party of B.C. candidate is Skadi Green, a letter carrier, union organizer, renter and community advocate who has lived in
Metro Vancouver since 2010. Her experience as a worker and organizer has shaped her focus on affordability, workers’ rights, environmental protection and ensuring people have a meaningful voice in decisions that affect their communities, says the B.C. Green party. She is running in Delta South to advocate for stronger protections for working people, greater affordability, environmental stewardship and public decision-making that gives local communities a real voice. Rounding out the list for Delta South is Jim McMurtry, running for OneBC. McMurtry is also running as an independent candidate for Delta school board in the Oct. 17 municipal election. According to the party’s website, McMurtry has ties to the South Delta riding, where he resides with his wife and

Local philanthropist Ivy Tam presents $100,000donation to Delta Hospital Long-time Ladner resident Ivy Tam has made a $100,000 gift to the Elevating Care: Bringing MRI to Delta Campaign, helping bring MRI services to Delta Hospital for the first time in its history. The donation brings the community a step closer to ensuring local residents can access advanced diagnostic imaging close to home. The campaign aims to raise $18 million to fund the MRI equipment and renovations required to establish MRI services at Delta Hospital. Tam has called Ladner home for the past 17 years and has become a dedicated supporter of local health care through Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. Since first connecting with the foundation in 2025, she has made a series of meaningful contributions to support patient care, including a $100,000 gift to the Beedie Long-Term Care Centre campaign and an additional donation to replace aging chairs in Delta Hospital’s Emergency Department. For Tam, the decision to support the MRI campaign was rooted in a desire to help address a growing health-care need in her community. “I believe it is important to help when we can, especially when there is a need close to home,” said
Tam. “Health care touches all of us at some point in our lives. Bringing MRI services to Delta will make a meaningful difference for patients and families, and I am pleased to play a small part in helping make it happen.” Once operational, the new MRI service is expected to provide up to 10,000 scans annually and reduce the need for Delta residents to travel outside the community for diagnostic imaging appointments. Last year alone, more than 5,400 Delta residents travelled elsewhere for outpatient MRI services. “Ivy’s generosity reflects the incredible spirit of our community,” said Lisa Hoglund, CEO of Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. “Her support of local health care has been both thoughtful and impactful, from long-term care and emergency care enhancements, to now helping bring MRI services to Delta. We are deeply grateful for her commitment and leadership.” The MRI project is a partnership between Fraser Health and Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation. Fraser Health will oversee construction, staffing and operations, while the foundation is responsible for raising the $18 million needed for equipment and renovations.

Eby’s $10-a-day child-care spot reeks of hypocrisy ROB SHAW

T
he BC NDP government’s failure to follow through on a $10-a-day universal child-care system was always going to catch up to it eventually. You can’t promise something over three elections, completely fail to deliver, and just keep skating past the voters. Still, nobody expected the sharp, personal edge the issue would take Monday after BC NDP Leader David Eby revealed he, as premier, had accepted one of the very few $10-aday spots in the province that are supposed to be, in theory, earmarked for the neediest. “My family has, yes,” he said, in response to a question at a rally in North Delta. “How do you think, just the optics of that, and how people would feel knowing that you benefit from a program that very few people have access to, and one that you won’t expand?” Global BC’s Grace Ke asked in her follow-up. “Well, I think it’s absolutely crucial that every British Columbian get access to affordable child care, and we are committed to expanding child care,” replied Eby. Far from expansion, the Eby government froze enrolment in the $10-a-day system in February over worries about cost, provider concerns and inequity. Tens of thousands of families still hoping to get one of the few true $10-a-day spots have spent the year waiting for government to fin-

ish a slow-moving review, which has now been pushed off indefinitely due to the NDP’s decision to call a snap election. Only around 10 per cent of the 160,000 child-care spaces in B.C. are actually $10-aday. That, despite eight years and billions of dollars in funding from Victoria and Ottawa. B.C. was one of the first provinces to promise universal $10-a-day, but now finds itself woefully behind the rest of the country with some of the most expensive fees in Canada. Getting a true $10-a-day spot is like winning the sweepstakes, Education Minister Lisa Beare admitted earlier this year. “We are hearing from families that it’s a lottery system,” she told media in February, after instituting a pause. Anyone, in theory, can win a $10-a-day spot if they are at the right facility at the right time, know the right person, can work their way past the epic wait lists and also convince
the penny-pinching provincial government to fund the provider application. The premier won the lottery by having a child in a facility that happened to convert to $10-a-day two years ago, he said in a statement. Recognizing this, he said he made a donation to the facility. Had Eby not been so lucky, his income as premier (more than $230,000) and his wife’s income as a family doctor would have disqualified his family from any financial aid due to the $110,000 household income threshold his government set on what constitutes eligibility for provincial support. “Nobody begrudges David Eby and his wife for their success,” Conservative candidate Margareta Dovgal said in her party’s response. “What families will not accept is a premier who promised them $10-a-day child care, failed to deliver it, and then took one of the scarce spots for himself while a single mom working two jobs sits on a waitlist.” The NDP scrambled Monday to try and contain the damage to Eby. And the days ahead will likely be gripped with the narrative of the wealthy premier winning a lottery he didn’t need. But it’s not really about Eby. It’s about the BC NDP promising multiple times to create a universal $10-a-day childcare system, and failing to come close. It’s about a party that after almost a decade in power has basically tossed its hands up in the air and admitted it doesn’t have a clue how to do what it said it would.

hen the writ dropped, I thought, really? B.C. is known for its unconventional politics but when Premier David Eby called a provincial election less than two years into the NDP’s mandate I was furious. Let’s not forget municipal election campaigns were in full swing, a disrespectful snub to local politics. Despite a crowded political arena we have no choice but to participate twice. No matter how grumpy we are, the voting boxes are beckoning. It’s no surprise we are exhausted by the dirty game of politics.
The constant noise and insults from down south, along with the economic insecurity of trade tariffs, have left us fatigued. In the past two years we have been asked to think about our place in the world, our sovereignty and what our future will look like. Now we must decide who will run our city and our province in the course of the next 10 or so days. This year’s municipal election may be one of the most crucial as we head into a very important four years for Delta. New energy projects are coming to our community, the tunnel construction is underway and the densification of our traditional neighbourhoods is contentious.
Community Comment INGRID ABBOTT
Delta Hospital’s emergency department was at 150 per cent capacity last week, our strained health-care system can’t take
much more. We need help. These are incredibly important issues that impact us all, so please inform yourself about the local candidates and take the time to vote on Oct. 17. A week later, on Oct. 24, we have to get off the couch again and vote provincially. This election result is hard to predict with new parties and old ones lobbying you for their vote. While we don’t have a particularly contentious race here in Delta, take the time to consider the candidates. We must not be seduced by apathy. Get to your polling station and play a part in determining Delta’s future.

Wildlife on Roberts Bank are still at risk
Editor: Prime Minister Mark Carney’s $1.2 billion will do nothing to protect the Roberts Bank environment and sensitive ecosystems which wildlife relies on for their very survival. That pledge is like using a garden hose to stop a fire in a six-storey building. The building will still burn to the ground. The Carney Liberal government either does not understand how important the Roberts Bank ecosystem and environment is to BC West Coast wildlife, or it doesn’t care. Roberts Bank is a living ecosystem. The Roberts Bank
Terminal 2 project and now the oil pipeline will destroy the ecological integrity of Roberts Bank, extinguish an entire species of migratory birds as well as undermine the salmon fishery and the southern resident killer whales, by compromising the biofilm in the mud on Roberts Bank. That biofilm is why the salmon, the shorebirds, the crabs, the southern resident killer whales and all the other wildlife are there. Without that biofilm they would not be there, except there is nowhere else for them to go. Ottawa knows that already. The Federal Assessment Panel told them that.
Their own scientists told them that building the man-made island that RBT2 and the oil terminal require will result in significant adverse environmental effects that will be immediate, continuous, permanent, irreversible and unable to be mitigated at the scale required. Every major Canadian environmental group as well as several international groups have already told the Liberal government. But they are not listening. There have always been and still are alternatives to the Roberts Bank location, but likewise the government is not listening. Roger Emsley

Government needs to do what is right Editor: Re: Reactions mixed on West Coast pipeline project (Optimist, online) Reactions are definitely mixed. While the prime minister, his cabinet, and our MP Jill McKnight are 100 per cent on board, I know of many Delta residents who are appalled at this decision. I am a strong advocate for shifting our trade to other trading partners, and I support investment in projects that will grow jobs and industry in Canada, but I do not support forsaking the future of our children to
spite the orange crybaby. Heavy bitumen is arguably more damaging to the global environment than coal, so why are we doing this? Who is going to buy this product? So I ask, why are we Canadians and our MP supporting the increased production of the dirtiest oil ever produced? Where is our future in that? If this was truly about developing and protecting the future of our workforce and economy, we would use a fraction of the money this will cost to develop new, renewable energy
products and processes. That would create thousands of jobs that any Canadian would be proud to tell their children and grandchildren when they ultimately ask what they did to protect their future. I implore Delta MP Jill McKnight and Prime Minister Mark Carney to think hard about the future of Canada and Canadians instead of just only their reelection or trying to stick it to the big orange crybaby. Let’s grow up and do the right thing now, because later is too late. Shawn Gold

A Vancouver man was sentenced to a year in jail, two years’ probation and a three-year driving ban following a traffic stop in Delta that left a B.C. Mountie injured. Last March, Tobin Haas, 58, pleaded
guilty to a charge of dangerous operation of a vehicle causing bodily harm, and driving while his licence was suspended. He was sentenced Sept. 17 in Surrey Provincial Court. B.C. Highway Patrol said in a release that on Feb. 17, 2024, mid-morning, police stopped a grey Nissan on Hwy. 91 near 72nd Avenue, in Delta, for a suspected outstanding arrest warrant. But when asked for his ID and driver’s licence, police said Haas sped away, dragging the officer until he was able to disengage. The officer is still recovering from his injuries. “If you get stopped by the police, do not make a bad day worse by fleeing the scene,” said Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael McLaughlin. “When you get pulled over by police, it’s almost certain that we already have you recorded on camera. “It’s safer for everyone if you wait for the court process to contest the charges against you.”

Tilbury LNG expansion gets environmental certificate SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The B.C. government last last month announced that it has issued an environmental assessment certificate to FortisBC for the Phase 2 expansion of its liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility on Tilbury Island in Delta. In a news release, the province notes that Tamara Davidson, Minister of Environment and Parks, and Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, made the decision after carefully considering the Environmental Assessment Office’s (EAO) assessment report and recommendations,
along with input from First Nations, technical experts and the public. An environmental assessment certificate is required for the project to proceed. The EAO assessment concluded that the project would not cause significant adverse effects once mitigation measures and proposed conditions are applied, the province explains, adding that the environmental assessment certificate contains 18 legally binding conditions. The EAO conducted the assessment on behalf of the provincial and federal governments. The single assessment is to be used for decisions by both levels of govern-
ment, eliminating the need for two assessments for a single project, the province noted. The federal decision is pending on Phase 2. Tilbury Phase 2 includes the construction of a new LNG storage tank with a working volume of 142,400 cubic meters, LNG liquefaction capacity of up to 7,700 tonnes per day, natural gas receiving facilities and supporting infrastructure within the existing LNG facility area. The Tilbury Phase 2 site is located on the northern portion of the Hopcott Road property. The project this year was added to the B.C. government’s list of priority major projects.

We are currently in the best financial position in Delta’s history - with no debt and healthy emergency contingency funds - while essential services and infrastructure projects continue to grow and improve.” Highlights of the platform include: Affordability: Freezing City fee increases in 2027, keeping municipal and utility taxes competitive, maintaining free recreation for youth 18 and under and lowering the Super Senior Pass eligibility age from 75 to 70. City making more Wellington Point boat launch repairs SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The City of Delta has reissued a request for bids for the reconstruction of key components of the existing Wellington Point Park boat launch in Ladner. The work is to include the temporary removal of the existing wooden float system, demolition and stockpiling of concrete boat launch ramp elements and associated rip rap, the installation of a new precast ramp toe end and perimeter rip rap and reinstallation of the existing wooden float system. The city notes that, recognizing that the project is being undertaken within the tidal influence zone for the Fraser River, approvals from the Federal Department of Fisheries (DFO) and the BC Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship have been finalized. Among other things, those permissions explicitly stipulate that the
construction must be undertaken in conjunction with an in-stream isolation system capable of permitting all works to be undertaken in a dry working environment, and all physical on- site works must be undertaken between Nov. 2, 2026 and Feb. 28, 2027. There is no opportunity to extend physical works on-site past the set completion date, without introducing additional environmental monitoring and oversight requirements. The city also notes it anticipates that the contractor would look to undertake the work during low tide conditions, which typically occur outside normal commercial work hours. Public vehicle circulation must be maintained along the park’s upper roadway area by way of a six-metre wide drive aisle for the duration of onsite activity. The boat launch’s wooden float system was replaced in 2022 and included the installation of new piles to restrain the float system.

Lucas Birks got a full taste of what it is like to be a firefighter as this year’s recipient of the Delta Fire Department’s Fire Chief for the day. Birks, a Grade 7 student at Neilson Grove Elementary was picked up at school at 9 a.m. on Friday morning Oct. 9. After photos with his class and the firefighters, he and his mom Megan, who accompanied him for the day, then headed for McDonald’s in Ladner for breakfast with Mayor George Harvie and fire Chief Dave Wood. It was then a quick trip over to fire hall number one where Wood and other on-duty firefighters presented Birks with an award and posed for photos. There was also an E-Comm dispatch announcement welcoming him as Fire Chief for the Day.

New playground expansions coming for Delta residents SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Construction of the new playground expansion outside the North Delta Recreation Centre is expected to be completed this fall. That’s according to a recent update from the city on the $400,000 project, a partnership with the Reach Child and Youth Development Society. Aimed at increasing capacity and enhancing accessibility, the city is contributing $150,000 for the project, which received a provincial grant and donations. The expansion will double the play area’s size, add fencing, seating and shade trees, as well as include wheelchair-accessible play equipment that allows users to engage with various senses and physical capabilities on a safe and accessible surface. Meanwhile, as far as city playground renewals, the construction of the Ladner Harbour Park new playground is now underway with completion scheduled for this fall. Having an estimated cost of $340,000, the design option selected was based on community feedback, having both accessible playground turf and fibar surfacing. In response to community requests,
the existing Supernova spinner will remain in its current location in the park as it is in good working condition, according to the city. Costing an estimated $350,000, installation of the new playground equipment at Sunshine Hills Park is also underway. A report this summer noted that while community feedback guided the selection of one of the proposed design options, the final design is to also include elements of the alternative option as well. Rubber surfacing will be utilized to ensure playground elements are accessible and a new pathway from the sidewalk will allow for easier stroller and wheelchair access, the report notes. More picnic tables and benches are also included in the design to address the desire for more seating, while the existing swings will be retained with an accessible bucket seat being added. The city has 37 playgrounds in its inventory, 27 of which were constructed during the period from 2002 to 2005 and are nearing the end of their lifecycle. The report adds that, as part of an effort to create a continuous playground renewal program, Delta has completed the replacement and upgrade of 11 playgrounds since 2019, with two playground renewals planned annually moving forward.

Folk super-group The Bills playing KinVillage Two-time JUNO Award nominees The Bills are bringing their signature acoustic sounds to South Delta this fall for a special one-night performance. The globally acclaimed roots quintet will take the stage at the KinVillage Community Centre on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 8 p.m. Known for their explosive live shows and masterful instrumentation, the Vancouver Island-based ensemble promises an intimate evening of genre-bending musical artistry. With individual band members sporting worldclass credentials in folk/roots, jazz, classical and world music, the quintet is celebrated for an original style that folds these genres into a single, cohesive sound. The group’s lineup features all-star multi-instrumentalists Marc Atkinson (mandolin, guitar, voice), Adrian Dolan (fiddle, accordion, piano, voice), Chris Frye (guitar, voice), Richard Moody (violin, voice), Scott White (upright bass, voice). In addition to their two JUNO nominations, the band holds multiple Western Canadian Music Awards. The Doobie Brothers Experience coming to Genesis Coming to the Genesis Theatre on Oct. 24, is “DBX – The Doobie Brothers Experience” Canada’s premier tribute to The Doobie Brothers. Look-a-likes of Tom Johnston and Pat Simmons with vocal similarities and soaring vocal harmonies, are the band’s hallmarks and the foundation to which their performance has been built. With more than 240 years of collective professional experience in the sixpiece band today, their performances are as close to the real deal as you’ll ever get. With one of the most “game-changing” song catalogues in rock and roll
history from the Tom Johnston era to the Michael McDonald era, “DBX” has evolved into a masterful celebration of The Doobie Brothers. Most every rock enthusiast knows the words to China Grove, Long Train Runnin’, What A Fool Believes, Black Water, or Minute By Minute and many, many more. If you love The Doobie Brothers, then welcome to an evening with “DBX – The Doobie Brothers Experience”, and Listen To The Music… The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available at: https://www.vtix.com/ dbx—-the-doobie-brothers-experience/5818/. -Submitted

Can orthodontic treatment provide anti-aging benefits?
I have hearing loss in both ears, but one is definitely worse than the other. Can I just get one hearing aid for now?
Yes. A healthy, well-aligned smile can be one of the most natural forms of facial rejuvenation. As we age, teeth often shift, wear down, and collapse inward. This loss of dental arch support can affect facial shape contributing to an aged appearance. The good news is that teeth can be moved successfully at almost any age. Adults in their 70s and 80s have benefited from orthodontic treatment to improve both appearance and function. Existing veneers, crowns, bridges and root canal treated teeth can undergo orthodontic tooth movement when incorporated into a customized treatment plan. You can, but you probably shouldn’t. Cover one eye with your hand: notice how clarity, depth perception, and spatial awareness are affected? It’s not much different with our ears. Even if your hearing loss is predominately in one ear, wearing hearing aids in both can help with: • Sound distinction and speech understanding (it’s easier Mark Nickel to be selective with what you listen to) BC-HIP, B.Sc • Sound detection (you can more reliably detect where Hearing Instrument sounds are coming from, which is important for Practitioner social and safety reasons) • Sound quality • Brain stimulation (your brain likes getting equal input from both ears) • Listening ease (amplification in each ear is less tiring, less straining and more satisfying) Phone: 604-943-0033 Just as we use both eyes to see our best, our 5682 12 Avenue, Tsawwassen two ears work together to help us hear our best!
What is the mortgage stress test?
How can you help in designing an ad that will get the readers’ attention amongst the other ads and the articles in the paper?
The mortgage stress test was brought in by the Federal Government to ensure home buyers can still afford their mortgage payments if interest rates rise. Lisa Manwaring The stress test means that borrowers will be qualified on a rate of 2% above their actual borrowing rate or the current Government benchmark rate of 5.25%, www.lisamanwaring.com lisa@southwestmortgage.ca whichever is the higher of the 2. 604-805-1833

Here are the five most important points in creating a good ad: 1. Lead with a strong headline. It should be interesting and try not to be too cliché. Is not everyone tired of all the “Best Kept Secrets” that are in every marketplace today? 2. Use a graphic element that ties into the product(s) being sold and that will attract attention. 3. Make sure your ad copy describes at least one benefit for the potential customer. Why should they buy that product now and/or why should they buy it at all?
Sarah Strother Publisher Delta Optimist
4. There must be a call to action. Create a sense of urgency so the reader has a reason to act on the information in the ad. 5. Tell them who you are and where you are. Design a strong logo and use a font relevant to the business you are in. Always include your address, website, phone number etc.

A D V I C E F R O M T H E PROFESSIONALS Dear Dr. McPhie, why am I feeling more tired, achy and anxious, and why am I waking up at night?
What are the benefits of gifting securities directly to a charitable organization?
Great question And far too common. Let’s get this sorted out. Sleep is vital for healthy longevity. Many things to consider:
When you donate securities, there are benefits to both you and your favourite charity. By gifting securities including stocks, bonds and mutual funds, you eliminate capital gains tax, you receive a charitable tax receipt for the full current value of the shares, and you get to donate more to your charity of choice. Donating securities is one of the most tax efficient ways to support a cause you care about, and a great way to make a meaningful gift before the end of the year. Before you decide to donate securities directly, we advise that you discuss your personal circumstances with your financial advisor.

Is it time to replace your aging furnace?
Are older Canadian banknotes worth much money? For almost all Canadian banknotes from 1969 to date, only uncirculated notes have a chance to be worth more than face value. All used bills, they need to be deposited into the bank. Last week I did the monthly cash deposit and I found out that the Bank of Canada has changed the rules on older banknotes. We were unable to directly deposit them but had to fill out forms to send the Bank of Canada with the notes. Payment to us would be after the bank receives them. I believe this is the beginning of demonetizing the older notes like most other countries in the world is already doing.

3. Stress and Sleep: An overactive stress response can contribute to anxiety, disrupted sleep and daytime exhaustion.
If you are interested in making a gift of securities to Delta Hospital and Community Health Foundation, you can find a transfer form and more information on our website: www.dhchfoundation.ca. Just because your furnace is getting older doesn’t necessarily mean it’s time to replace it. Several factors should be considered, including its age, overall condition, reliability, and maintenance history. A well-maintained furnace can provide decades of reliable service, and sometimes a relatively inexpensive repair is all that’s needed to keep it running. However, if your furnace is experiencing frequent breakdowns, needs costly repairs, or has become unreliable, investing in a new system may make more sense. At Neighbourhood Heating & Cooling, we believe in helping homeowners understand their options so they can make informed decisions, rather than automatically recommending replacement. If you’re wondering whether to repair or replace your furnace, call 604-946-7778. We’d be happy to take a look and help you decide what’s best for your home.

A recent survey conducted by Ligonier Ministries found that 45 per cent of Canadian evangelicals “somehow say that Jesus was a great teacher – but not God”. For those of us who are orthodox Christians, this statistic is alarming and indicates that much more work needs to be done by pastors in imparting sound doctrine in our churches. I can understand how unchurched people could be left with this impression, but almost half of professing Christians don’t believe Jesus is God? This is extraordinary, and an indictment of my profession. This is more than troubling and makes me wonder: what exactly is being taught in churches today? It seems far too many pastors are preoccupied

with their own biographical narratives, appeals for money, and self-help coddling rather than preaching the Word, in season and out of season. There’s a reluctance to boldly preach the full counsel of God, entrusting the results to Him. Many leave you with more information about themselves, than the
Lord Jesus Christ. Forty-five per cent… I pray for a reset, renewal, revival and a return to preaching the bible, without apology, or 45 will soon become 46… For starters, in the New Testament, the book of Hebrews opens with this statement: “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed the heir of all things, through whom also He created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature, and He upholds the universe by the word of His power…” I implore you to come to the One and only Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, “God with us”.

The junior varsity South Delta Sun Devils rolled to a 40-19 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders on Oct. 7 to open up their regular season. Using explosive plays on offence and a ball-hawking defence, South Delta took control early and remained comfortably ahead throughout the contest. South Delta struck quickly in the opening quarter as quarterback Raemon Dosanjh connected with Jacob Johal on a 67-yard touchdown pass before finding Will Pravica for a 40-yard score later in the frame. The early aerial attack helped South Delta build a 14-0 lead. South Delta’s defence added to the advantage in the second quarter when Breslen McCaw stepped in front of a pass and raced 87 yards for a touchdown. The Sun Devils continued to capitalize on their momentum moments later as Jack Sever punched in a 13-yard touchdown run for a commanding 27-0 halftime lead. Holy Cross mounted a challenge in the second half, but South Delta responded each time. Dosanjh threw his third touchdown of the game, finding Kaspian Glazier from 15 yards out, while Sever broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run. Dosanjh was nearly flawless through the air, completing eight of nine passes for 190 yards and three touchdowns. Sever paced the ground game with 94 rushing yards and two scores on just four carries. Johal finished with 76 receiving yards and a touchdown, while Pravica added a touchdown catch of his own.

The junior varsity South Delta Sun Devils rolled to a 40-19 victory over the Holy Cross Crusaders on Oct. 7 to open up their regular season schedule. Defensively, the Sun Devils created several game-changing turnovers. McCaw’s interception return touchdown highlighted the effort, while Owen Gillespie and Darwin Good also recorded interceptions to help shut down any hopes of a Crusaders comeback. Next up, the Sun Devils renew their
crosstown rivalry with the Seaquam Seahawks on Thursday night at Mackie Park. Kick-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. Senior varsity After suffering a tough loss the previous week, the senior varsity Sun Devils delivered a spirited response Saturday (Oct. 10), defeating the Carson Graham Eagles 32-20.

South Delta came out firing, opening the scoring on a six-yard touchdown run by quarterback Quinn Kirincic The defence then took over. Esaac Mohammed intercepted a pass and returned it 23 yards for a touchdown before Lucas Chown capped another drive with an eight-yard touchdown run to give South Delta a 19-0 lead after the opening quarter. South Delta extended its advantage in the second quarter when Henry Perry stepped in front of a pass and raced 35 yards for a touchdown. Carson Graham responded with a pair of scores to cut into the lead, but the Sun Devils answered before halftime when Kirincic found Mohammed for a 30-yard touchdown strike, sending South Delta into the break ahead 32-14. The defences controlled the third quarter, with neither side able to find the end zone. Carson Graham added a late touchdown in the fourth quarter. Kirincic led the offence, completing eight of 15 passes for 151 yards and a touchdown while adding a rushing touchdown. Chown carried the ball 17 times for 49 yards and a score. Perry was the top receiving target with five catches for 102 yards, while Easton Giesbrecht contributed two receptions for 19 yards. The South Delta defence was the difference-maker, forcing four interceptions on the afternoon. The Sun Devils will now turn their attention to a major challenge this Saturday when they face the big, physical GW Graham Grizzlies. Game time is 1:30 p.m. at South Delta Secondary.
