Earlier this year, the district developed the

Justice and Equity Action Plan, which focuses on eliminating unfair treatment, discrimination and oppression. “Our goal is to make every student and staff member feel valued, seen, and heard regardless of their sexuality, gender, race or religion,” said superintendent Doug Sheppard. Nathan Wilson, the district’s indigenous cultural mentor, opened the ceremony noting that May 5 is also Red Dress Day, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, and 2SLGBTQIA+ people. The Pride flag will remain raised until the end of June to celebrate Pride Month.

Sandpiper’s survival secret stuck in mud of Roberts Bank PHIL MELNYCHUK

People from around the world have responded to Sandpipers’ Last Supper after the documentary on part of Delta aired on CBC’s The Nature of Things on YouTube a few weeks ago. The film explains the role that the acres of mudflats in Roberts Bank, next to Deltaport, play in ensuring the western sandpipers reach their breeding grounds in Alaska. “It’s been really well received already. We’re getting alot of positive feedback, from people all over the world really, people that had no idea of that story of the western sandpipers … and why they use these ecosystems, the mudflats,” said environmental journalist Isabelle Groc who directed the film. “So we’re very pleased so far.” The film explains that biofilm, a nutritious slime that’s located in the muck

of the mudflats, is crucial for the birds because it allows the sandpipers to continue northward for breeding. “It’s a superfood for the birds, this what gives them the boost they need to complete their migration,” said Groc. “This is one of their critical stop over sites en route to their migration to Alaska. “What brings the birds specifically to these mudflats is intertidal biofilm that they find on these mudflats.” The birds scrape biofilm off the surface of the mud with a toothbrushlike tongue and can slurp up 20 percent of their body weight in an hour, says the film. Former federal government scientist Bob Elner made the discovery in the early 2000s and is now scientist emeritus with Environment and Climate Change Canada. will destroy the feeding ground, says the film. Building a new artificial island at the end of the causeway will change the hydrology of Roberts Bank, said Environment and Climate Change Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The island could restrict saltwater tidal flows into the mudflats, resulting in more freshwater from the Fraser River, and eliminating the biofilm and the

food source for the birds. “If they don’t have access to these nutrients … they won’t arrive in good shape to their breeding grounds in Alaska,” said Groc. Preserving the biofilm is one of the 370 legally binding conditions of the approval, she noted. The Roberts Bank mudflats is one of the last remaining intact intertidal mudflats in Western Canada, and if the biofilm is lost, there’s no other

food option for the birds, she said. The terminal expansion was given the green light by the federal government in April 2023, after a “long and thorough review,” with provincial approval following in 2024. RBT2 will provide a 50 percent increase to the container terminal’s capacity, providing 2.4 million TEUs (20-footequivalent units) of addi-

tional capacity yearly and contributing $3 billion annually to GDP. However, final approvals are still pending from Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Groc has been photographing the birds for the last 16 years. She said the scientific evidence shows the port expansion, as proposed, is not compatible with the healthy functioning of the biofilm.

A new leader is ready to take the reins of the Delta Optimist. The Optimist is pleased to announce the arrival of Sarah Strother as publisher, taking over from Matt Blair who has moved on to a new leadership role within the Glacier Media chain. “I’m looking forward to my new role with The Delta Optimist. The Local Government Association (LMLGA) has endorsed a resolution put forward by the City of Delta on the need for better protection for the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR). At the LMGA’s convention in Whistler, which took place April 29 to May 1, Delta’s resolution called for the province to strengthen the Agricultural Land Commission’s (ALC) enforcement capabilities by increasing funding to allow for a significant expansion of its compliance and enforcement team. The resolution will also be put forward at the Union of BC Municipalities (UBCM) convention later this year. The resolution came about after Delta council raised concerns about large structures on agricultural land and adopted of a resolution that, in part, directed Delta staff to coordinate and assist the ALC on future enforcement on non-compliant buildings. A Delta staff report pointed out that the ALC only has eight staff members,

which includes six officers, one advisor and one supervisor, even though the ALC regulates and oversees land use legislation for approximately 4.6 million hectares of ALR land across B.C. Providing an update to council at their May 5 regular meeting, Coun. Rod Binder, vice-chair of the city’s agricultural advisory committee, said that’s a lot of “heavy lifting for those eight folks” and the compliance and enforcement team needs help. Binder also noted that city staff are currently working on a survey that will engage members of the agricultural community on potential additional regulations to help guide Delta’s zoning when it comes to non-compliant farm use buildings. Council earlier this year agreed to have the city investigate recent developments on local farmlands where large new buildings have been constructed or are in the process of being built. Binder at the time noted non-compliant use of new buildings could drive up the price of farmland, making farming less economically viable.

Council OKs design for new Winskill aquatic centre SANDOR GYARMATI

The Winskill renewal project is making progress, advancing to the next step, with shovels in the ground this summer, while the city keeps a close eye on the costs. Delta council on Monday heard a presentation from staff on the latest round of public consultation on the design for the new aquatic and fitness facility, with council approving the final form, character and layout plans that had been refined based on the input. Jim Bauer, director of facilities and major projects, said there was strong support for the design, outlining several refinements for the lobby and reception area, the exterior design, as well as the park plan. “The core design features that received the most support included the natatorium, fitness centre, accessibility features, and other indoor amenities such as the gym, multipurpose rooms, BGC space, and community kitchen. “The majority of participants rated these features as ‘looks great’ and expressed excitement about the thoughtful designs, expanded community space

Construction on the two-level, 90,000-square-foot facility starts this summer. and responsiveness to community needs,” his report to council states. Among the refinements are the addition of more comfortable and accessible seating in the lobby area, softening the “boxy look” of the exterior and refining the covered areas at the entry and along 56th Street, as well as enhancing accessibility and improving the user experience from the parking area to the building.

The report notes participants who were less supportive indicated their opposition to past project decisions, wanted to revise the scope to include a library or were unaware of some of the features such as the steam room, sauna and multi-purpose rooms. As far as the project’s total cost, Bauer noted the construction management firm has come up with a Class C cost

estimate, projected within the range of +20 or -15 percent. The project cost is estimated at $130 million, which was at the top end of the initial estimated cost provided to council last fall. Increases have been partially offset by savings achieved through more favourable baseball field construction pricing, but the latest estimate also incorporates a $2-million tariff contingency, along with others. The current plan is to have the existing Winskill facility and its programs remain open until the new facility opens its doors in 2027. As for Winskill Park, last fall, council approved an overall park plan, including a fourth baseball diamond, built in conjunction with park field improvements. Preparation is currently underway with realignment of the baseball diamonds, which are expected to be complete by this fall. Bauer also noted that a study five years ago identified the need for a storm drainage upgrade near Winskill, and that project will also be carried out. That project will cost $1.6 million but funds are available in the engineering department’s budget.

he life of a journalist has rarely been an easy one and lately it’s seemingly getting worse. This week, our Central News team updated a court case involving Glacier Media reporter Jeremy Hainsworth who was stalked and harassed for just trying to do his job. The man has been ordered by a judge not to have any contact with Hainsworth for one year after showing up to his work and sending “aggressive, rude and offensive” emails. Appalling is one word that comes to mind when I think of what my colleague has had to endure because of this person. I have many other words and thoughts, but they are not suitable for print. Not to the extent that Jeremy went through, but I too was harassed by a person in Delta. Following a story that I wrote involving this person who was convicted in a stalking case and sent to jail, I received threatening calls from him in jail telling me that he would be paying me a visit once he was out of jail. Sure enough, out of the blue, the person showed up at our office, knocked on the door and demanded to speak with me, seemingly the same day he was released from jail. He offered veiled threats when I told him to leave, he left by saying, “Don’t worry, I know where to find you.” The incident was disturbing, so much so that I contacted Delta police. The harassment against me and this newspaper also continues online – on our community Facebook pages with demeaning comments about the newspaper and how we our doing our jobs. By all means, you can disagree with my opinion, disagree with how we cover issues in our community, but I draw the line when it comes to personal attacks. I lie awake at night wondering how much longer I can do a job that has been my life for almost 30 years.

Mental-health crisis is on our doorstep

y cousin lives in Cape Town, South Africa. She sent me an Instagram video recently that was titled: “Vancouver is broken.” It was 20 seconds of the Downtown Eastside at its worst. The narrator described our city as full of violent crime with the senseless killings of citizens, full of addicts and homeless people screaming in the streets. My cousin asked me, “Was this true or was it a scam?” I have yet to answer because I don’t know how to, and frankly I’m embarrassed. My son works on the DTES as an outreach worker. How do I tell her this is where he works and that the video is not fake? On April 26, the unimaginable happened when a man drove through the Lapu Lapu Day festival killing 11 people, critically injured many and traumatized not just our city,

but Filipino communities around the world. The suspect is currently undergoing a mental-health assessment and was under the care of a mental-health team, so just like the people of the Downtown Eastside, he was in crisis. From the upper class to the poor, and everyone in between, people are suffering behind closed doors and in broad daylight. South Delta is not immune.

Just ask Delta police. The cost of this near epidemic to Canada’s economy is astounding. Annually, billions of dollars are lost to health-care costs, lost productivity, and quality of life, because of mental illness. Thankfully, since the festival tragedy, there has been serious talk amongst politicians to change laws and increase support. If you drive by the growing memorial at 41st Avenue and Fraser, in Vancouver, and witness the outpouring of grief for the victims, it will break your heart. My wish is that not one more innocent person loses their life because of the actions of someone in a mental-health crisis. That wish starts with the will to bring change. Now is the time. How many more must suffer? Editor: I started voting when I was 19 years old and have voted in every election since. I’m now 69, and after the tragedy at the Lapu Lapu Festival, I’ve never been so disheartened with politicians of all parties, at all levels in this province and country. As former Vancouver police chief Adam Palmer stated last week, the mental-health crisis took a turn for the worse when the government decided to let people heal in the community, and the necessary support wasn’t there. Repeatedly, I hear political rhetoric about mental health issues, repeat offenders, and the opioid crisis, and I see nothing, or not nearly enough, being done. Why is this?

Although we absolutely love Ladner, there is one thing that is sadly lacking. Namely, off-leash dog parks. For where we live, near Ladner Elementary, there is nowhere within walking distance where there is an off-leash park. This lack is terribly unfair and must be remedied ASAP. Tina Hopkins

If it was up to Delta students, this riding would now have a Conservative party Member of Parliament. The results of the national Student Vote program, which saw a total of 24 Delta secondary and elementary schools cast ballots, with 21 returning on election night, had Conservative Jessy Sahota on top in the federal election, winning with just over 48 percent of the vote. Liberal candidate Jill McKnight finished second, at just under 32 percent of the vote that had valid ballots, while the NDP’s Jason McCormick followed with just over 15.5 percent and Natasa Sirotic, with the People’s Party of Canada, finishing at just over 4.5 percent. The results varied across the schools with Delview Secondary, for example, having Sahota win with just over 52.4 percent, and almost 59 percent at North Delta Secondary, while McKnight had the most votes at English Bluff Elementary, with just over 41.2 percent In B.C., 149,115 students cast ballots from 853 schools, and the Conservatives came out on top with 29 seats, while the Liberals and NDP won nine and four respectively, and the Greens one.

In total, more than 900,000 elementary, intermediate and high school students across the country participated in Student Vote Canada, coinciding with the 2025 federal election. According to Student Vote, the Conservative Party nationally won 165 seats and 36.4 percent of the popular vote in Canada, forming a minority government, while Pierre Poilievre won his riding. The Liberal Party won 145 seats and 31.7 percent of the popular vote, forming the official opposition, while Mark Carney also won his riding. The NDP won 13 seats and 14.5 percent of the popular vote, while party leader Jagmeet Singh lost his riding. The Bloc Québecois won 18 seats and the Green party won two. After learning about democracy and elections, researching the parties and platforms, students cast ballots in their schools. Student volunteers took on the roles of deputy returning officer, poll clerks and others, to recreate as authentic an experience of voting as possible. Student Vote is a program of CIVIX, a non-partisan registered Canadian charity dedicated to strengthening democracy through civic education.

The Delta Chamber of Commerce and Ladner Business Association (LBA) have announced changes to their leadership structure. Richard Wischnewski, who was the LBA president, has recently been named the new executive-director of the chamber, while Jason Roberts, has been appointed as the interim president for the LBA. Wischnewski assumes his new role with the chamber, starting on May 15. “Serving on the LBA board since 2021 and as president over the past two years has been an incredibly rewarding experience,” said Wischnewski. “I’ve had the privilege of working alongside a dedicated group of people who care deeply about the strength and future of our business community. “This role has taught me so much — not just about leadership, but about the character and commitment of the people who make Ladner such a unique and vibrant place. Boundary Bay Regional Park sees more visits, says Metro Van report SANDOR GYARMATI

More than a million people visited Boundary Bay Regional Park in Delta last year. That’s according to a 2024 annual report to Metro Vancouver’s regional parks committee, which notes there were 1,025,800 visits at Boundary Bay Regional Park, up around six percent from the previous year. Meanwhile, Deas Island Regional Park in Delta had 354,900 visits in 2024, down two percent from the previous year, while the Delta South Surrey Regional Greenway had 64,700 visitors, which was down almost 37 percent. The report notes there were an estimated 14.5 million visits to regional parks and greenways, with records set at three locations, but none in Delta. Leading the way in visitations was Pacific Spirit Regional Park at more than 3.9 million. The report also highlights several accomplishments including a pilot program that allowed mobile food vending

at Boundary Bay Regional Park. Some of the other works completed included the advanced design of major greenway projects, including the trail at Aldergrove Regional Park, a section of Delta South Surrey Regional Greenway, a perimeter trail at Boundary Bay Regional Park and the reconfigured Delta Nature Reserve boardwalk. On another front, regarding Centennial Beach at Boundary Bay Regional Park, Metro Vancouver has been looking at potential future uses for the beach’s pavilion concession building. A staff report last fall noted the regional district engaged with a consultant team comprising architects, business/budgeting professionals and a kitchen consultant to evaluate uses. The study was to compare the current facility with possible future configurations providing combinations of food services and public use of the pavilion space, the report notes, adding the analysis will also examine operational impacts and any capital improvements.

Delta will replace washroom at Maple Crescent Park SANDOR GYARMATI

The City of Delta has issued a request for bids from qualified designbuilders to provide a firm price to complete the Maple Crescent Park washroom building project. The design of the new washroom building is to be based on the design of the new Ladner Lions Park washroom facility, according to the city. The successful proponent will be responsible for the demolition of the existing building, relocation of the existing irrigation antenna, controls and associated electrical boxes currently mounted on the building, as well as the design and construction of the new

building. The city notes that the washroom building at Maple Crescent Park was constructed in 1970 and is mainly composed of concrete blocks on a slab and a wood joist roof. The requirements include ensuring the freeze risk is mitigated as there were reports of water lines freezing at the Ladner Lions Park washroom, according to the city. The city also notes the available budget for the project is $800,000. The target for completion is by Dec. 31. A condition assessment was carried out by a consultant in 2020 for 33 city park washrooms and fieldhouses. That assessment recommended the washroom building

The fieldhouse at Hawthorne Park in Ladner is also to be replaced this year. In 2024, the new washroom was constructed at Memorial Park, but that building does not have a concession or storage. That washroom building cost about $790,000 for the demolition of the old structure and construction of the new building.

Mayor’s Charity Ball raises over $900,000 for local children On May 3, community spirit and generosity filled Cascades Casino Delta as 250 guests gathered for the second annual Delta Mayor’s Charity Ball, raising over $900,000 in support of the Healthy Snacks Program for Delta students. Presented by Realco Properties, the evening began with an elegant cocktail hour at Match Eatery & Public House, where guests mingled and connected. It was the perfect lead-in to an unforgettable night of giving. Emceed by Fiona Forbes, the formal program opened with a poignant moment of silence in honour of the lives lost in the April 26 Lapu Lapu Day tragedy. The City of Delta wants to enhance traffic safety at a pair of busy intersections. The city has issued a request for bids for an engineering firm for the design, construction administration and field inspection services for traffic control improvements at 56th Street and 16th Avenue in Tsawwassen, as well as a new traffic signal at 116th Street and 90th Avenue in North Delta. Last year, the city installed a full traffic signal at the intersection of 56th Street at 14B Street, a result of Delta council’s approval of an application to build a 48-unit market rental apartment building fronting the intersection. The city notes it is now looking for traffic signal and intersection design enhancements at 56th Street and 16th Avenue that also include accommodations for cycling facilities. The upgrades would include sidewalk widening, changing the left-turn movements to

protect pedestrians and other enhancements. Among the upgrades eyed for the 116th Street and 90th Avenue intersection is replacement of the existing control with full traffic signal, sidewalk widening and accommodation and upgrades of the cycling facilities including new asphalt bike ramps for bike lanes. The two new intersection initiatives aim to eliminate conflicting movements and significantly improve safety for all road users, the city notes. The design component of the project is to be completed no later than Oct. 31, in preparation for tendering for construction by the end of this year. Meanwhile, the City of Delta has wrapped up the public engagement phase of the North Delta Transportation Study. Staff have been gathering feedback on safety concerns, including speeding, roadway parking and congestion, to help formulate transportation recommendations for North Delta.

Another Tsawwassen development proposal that still must work its way to council is a revised mixed-use building application for the corner of 12th Avenue and 53A Street. The city last year received a revised rezoning application to consolidate the four properties to permit a six-storey building, with ground floor commercial units and 67 residential apartments units above. No rentals are proposed. An original application was submitted in January 2024 and underwent a public consultation process last summer, but the applicant later revised the application with several

changes. Those include increasing the height from five to six storeys, increasing the number of residential units from 65 units to 67, and eliminating 13 originally proposed lock-off suites. The commercial floor area is also bigger than the original proposal. The planning department notes the proposal is consistent with the neighbourhood centres and corridors land use designation in Official Community Plan (OCP). That means a public hearing can’t be held if council grants preliminary approval. A traffic study notes the current development proposal is anticipated to generate about 213 and 109 two-way site vehicle trips during the weekday

morning and afternoon peak hours, respectively. The report concluded the development is not anticipated to materially impact the traffic operations of the study road network. Another application, submitted in 2021 and having undergone revisions, had previously been considered, a project that would have seen a new 3.5-storey office/ retail building at the site. Following a July 2023 public hearing, council unanimously voted to reject that proposal, preferring the site focus more on residential uses. That earlier proposal had also been a controversial one for area residents who argued the building didn’t fit with the residential area.

Wayne Lunderby encouraged all who attended to honour the milestone by staying firmly committed to God’s Word and following Jesus, sharing His amazing grace with family, friends and community. Thirteen individuals were presented with their awards at a gala event on Monday, April 28 in Vancouver. The awards celebrate individuals and organizations whose outstanding contributions foster the well-being, strength and future of our community. As a signature fundraising event, the Awards not only highlight the nominees’ achievements but also unite our diverse community in a shared mission to empower and uplift one another. This year’s event was a resounding success in raising funds for the YWCA’s Housing Action Fund to

accelerate the development of new affordable housing for women and their children. Since its inception in 1984, the YWCA Women of Distinction Awards have been a cornerstone for celebrating progress and advancing gender equity. During the past 42 years, the event has honoured nearly 2,300 exceptional nominees who inspire change and drive meaningful impact. We are proud to present the extraordinary award recipients for 2025: Davidson, who is the Chief Medical Officer, BC Children’s Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre, won her award in the health and wellness category. She led the hospitals’ response during the COVID-19 pandemic and

led work to unite strategic goals across the organizations. Her contributions have transformed child and youth mental health care in B.C., having co-founded the National Institute of Families for Child and Youth Mental Health and now serving as Founding Board Director. The institute encourages collaboration between caregivers and professionals and jurisdictions worldwide have emulated its model. She championed the creation of the Institute of Global Health at Children’s and Women’s Health Centre, the first of its kind in North America. She was also appointed Division Head of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry in the Department of Psychiatry at UBC. -Submitted

become a pillar of the local arts scene over the past 11 years. “Some of these kids train over 20 hours a week — dancing, acting, singing — and the personal growth I get to witness is truly incredible,” says Reader-Romo. “None of it would be possible without our incredible parent volunteers and the support of this community. As a sports fan, this is one of my favourite times of the year when we’re blessed with NHL and NBA playoffs at the same time. There’s something special about the playoffs; the intensity is unmatched and the world’s premier athletes either get crushed by the pressure or rise to the occasion to showcase their skills on the world’s biggest stage. What are two favourite words for sports fans? Game 7. I love game 7 in a playoff series because it’s do or die; win or go home. Your entire season is on the line; you either show up or crumble under the pressure. The bible teaches that we need to live as if we’re playing a game 7 in the cosmic battle between

There is a race set before us. We’re called to run this race faithfully until the end; putting everything on the line and giving it our all; playing with intensity and fervour but recognizing that we can look to Jesus who provides us perfect victory. Scripture also exhorts us to “be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labour is not in vain” (1 Corinthians 15:58). Do we live our lives with such intentionality and fervor? Or are we just coasting, living aimlessly? There is no time to waste on meaningless things; we have a battle to fight and game 7 to win. Let’s make the best use of our time to live for Christ.

Mental Health Week: what is masking?

Masking is hiding or suppressing something about ourselves — emotions, personality traits, behaviours, or symptoms — from others. It’s a coping mechanism used to stay safe, hide in plain sight or “fit in,” and we may even do it without being aware of it. People mask for a lot of different reasons, including social acceptance, economic necessity and, sometimes, fear. Masking can be a helpful tool in our day-to-day lives — it can help people navigate social situations, feel safe, and maintain personal boundaries and privacy. We don’t always want to share everything about ourselves with every person we interact with, and

masking lets us decide who gets to see which parts of us. Unfortunately, people with mental illnesses and addictions often feel the need to mask to keep a job, find housing, or simply be accepted. When asked how we’re doing, many of us respond with the socially acceptable “I’m fine” or “I’m good” even though we might be having a bad day or struggling with something bigger. People with mental health or addiction struggles often wear that “I’m fine” mask every day and, over time, constant masking — whatever the reason — can lead to other or worsened mental and physical health concerns.

Other examples of masking include: • Hiding one’s gender identity or sexual orientation to stay safe, physically and psychologically • Hiding an invisible disability, including a mental illness, so as not to be seen as “weak” or different • Hiding natural characteristics of neurodivergence (atypical brain function including autism, ADHD, dyslexia) to fit in with what’s deemed normal • Hiding a substance use problem or using substances to cope with stress or symptoms of mental illness and distress • Presenting an idealized image of one’s life on social media.

Professionalism and politeness aren’t the same as masking. Managing your reputation by behaving professionally in the workplace, or politely in public, is not the same as masking. Being kind and courteous, even when we’re struggling, is practicing compassion. Masking is more about hiding things about ourselves so that others accept us and requires constant effort. It’s the difference between showing up as your best self at a job interview (managing your reputation in a specific situation) and constantly maintaining that idealized self so others will accept you. -Submitted

Step up for your friend or brother, so no one suffers in silence

HeadsUpGuys has recorded more than 4,500,000 visits from around the world

Sometimes, a breath of fresh air, some exercise and warm sunshine can make a difference in how we see things. The HeadsUpGuys online men’s mental health resource, is trying to encourage just that through its Step Up For Him campaign this June. Step Up for Him invites friends and family to take “meaningful action in support of the men in our lives … who often struggle with mental health challenges in silence.” The campaign takes place between June 1 and 15 and asks people to step up and ask their dad, brother, son, husband or colleague to go for

a walk, a hike, a bike ride or, “something creative that fits your style. “Getting active is not only good for our physical health, it’s also great for our mental health,” says a release. June is also Men’s Health Month which is preceded by Mental Health Week, from May 5 to 11. The campaign has been launched to mark the 10th anniversary of HeadsUpGuys, based out of UBC, which focuses on men’s mental health and helps people world wide. Organizations or individuals who participate in Step Up For Him, can also share their stepping up steps on social media by shooting quick videos of what they’re doing and why, and being asked to end the video, “You are not alone, I’m here for you.” The HeadsUpGuys website

also as an amplification kit where there are also custom Step Up For Him images for Instagram or Facebook posts, along with digital graphics, a poster and a two-week tracker. “Sharing the experience boosts mental health for everyone involved,” says HeadsUp. “Doing it together makes it more fun and builds the social connection that’s so important for mental health,” it says. HeadsUp spokesman Joe Rachert said physical exercise is a fantastic prescription for mental health. “Getting out into nature. Getting out for a walk, you get those endorphins going. It works incredibly well to improve your mental health and it is under appreciated and under valued,” he said. But it doesn’t matter what the activity is. Instead, it’s just the act that matters and shows

the person he’s not alone, he added. While the Step Up campaign takes place in June, HeadsUp also just released a public service announcement titled, The Candle, about suicide prevention and awareness, just before Mental Health Week, said Rachert. That’s since received more than 31,000 views as it’s shared around. “I think it says a powerful message, you’re not alone,” said Rachert. “Really, that’s our message. You’re not alone. None of this should have to be done in silence, or alone. There are resources out there. There are people to talk to.” According to the release, every week,10,000 people in more than 50 countries, use HeadsUpGuys to help work towards a happier and health-

ier life. The website tries to improve mental health literacy among men and offers tips for self care, inspirational stories, screening tools, self-guided courses, an international therapist directory and guidance in how to support men. According to the World Health Organization, men account for 75 percent of all suicides, while researchers estimate that 60 percent of those who die by suicide have major depression. HeadsUpGuys is a program of The University of British Columbia (UBC), operating under the leadership of Dr. John Ogrodniczuk, professor of psychiatry and director of the Psychotherapy Program at UBC. At Home A spring lawn revitalization strategy New growth is a hallmark of spring, whether it plays out in the birth of birds and bunnies or with the returned buds on trees and plant stalks. While most greenery rebounds naturally, lawns may need a little extra TLC to return to their once lush, green glory. Revitalizing a lawn in spring is a multifaceted process but can be well worth the reward when green grass adds to a beautiful landscape and functional yard. Here is how to get started when the weather warms, courtesy of The Farmer’s Almanac and The Home Depot. Clean up debris: Spend a few hours raking up leaves from the lawn

and removing any other winter debris like twigs so that air can reach the grass below. Also remove any thatch that has developed. Do some weeding: Pull out any weeds that have poked through early on and apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent additional weeds from taking over. Start the aeration process: A core aerator punches holes into the soil. This enables air and water to penetrate through to the roots. Mow to an appropriate height: Begin to mow when the ground is dry enough and the grass is long enough to need cutting. Leave some length to the lawn; otherwise, sunlight will reach the

soil and encourage weed seeds to germinate. With a little elbow grease at the start of spring, homeowners can establish strong and healthy lawns. Test the soil: Take a sample of the soil to determine its pH level and nutrient needs. Then you can adjust and set a strong foundation for the lawn to grow. Overseed the lawn: Apply grass seeds over the lawn, paying special attention to any bare or thin areas so that the seed will fill in the lawn. Water consistently: It is important to water the lawn deeply and consistently, especially when the weather is dry, to help promote strong root development.

Golden weekend at club volleyball provincials

South Delta is now home to several new provincial champions – this time for club volleyball. Brianna McKee - libero (SDSS), Ryan Assaly - outside (SDSS), Payton Kilpatrick - outside (SDSS), and Athena Falcos - middle (DSS) won gold at the BC U17 provincial championships playing for Raincity Riptide, which trains out of White Rock and Surrey. The last three years, Riptide has made every provincial final but has always finished second. This year, they won the provincial final, winning each game, that they played en route to the final, in straight sets. Each of the girls has played for their local high school volleyball team since Grade 8. Since joining the Riptide, they have each played an integral role for their team. This season, the team had three Super Series ranking tournaments in the Lower Mainland, Okanagan, and Nanaimo which helped bracket the

This team placed first at both the Lower Mainland and Okanagan Super Series tournaments in the top division, only coming in second at the last one in Nanaimo against U17

Thunder. The U17 Provincial championships were held Friday and Saturday, April 18 to 19, at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Raincity played three games on Friday, not dropping any sets.

Saturday saw the team start with a strong win against Kelowna in the quarterfinal match. Winning straight sets sent the girls to the semifinals against the Ducks where they won again in straight sets, sending the girls to the provincial final for a rematch against the Thunder. The team won the first set handily 25-7 and the second set 25-17. McKee’s outstanding play as libero and leadership as captain earned her provincial MVP recognition. These girls will continue to train in the next few weeks getting ready to take on Canada’s best at the National Championships in Edmonton, May 18 to 21. They were the top-placing B.C. team last year and finished 11th out of 240 teams from across the country. They are looking to best this result this year and are on the path to doing so. Two South Delta girls also won gold at the U18 volleyball provincials: Claire Thompson and Jenna McKaig. They play on the U18 Ducks. - Submitted

Ladner FC wins Division 2 Fraser Valley Soccer League title

Ladner FC capped off a remarkable season by winning the Division 2 title and securing promotion to Division 1 for the 2025/26 campaign — despite falling short in the Provincial Cup semi-finals. Their Provincial Cup run ended on April 26 in a 3-1 defeat to Gastown Astros FC. Gastown came out flying, scoring twice in the first 20 minutes and adding a third just before halftime. Despite a second-half goal from captain Markus Niebuhr — his second in as many games —Ladner couldn’t mount a full comeback. Refusing to let the loss define their

season, Ladner refocused ahead of their crucial promotion playoff against Division 2A winners Mission SC on Friday, May 2. Ladner has had a poor run in with Mission in recent years, most notably dropping a 2-1 decision in the Presidents Cup final just one month ago. With a spot in Division 1 on the line, both sides showed attacking intent early. Mission struck first in the 15-minute after a well-timed through ball led to a rebound goal. Ladner responded on the half-hour mark when Niebuhr, continuing his fine scoring form, slot-

ted home his third goal in three games off a beautifully delivered Vikram Puri free kick. Tensions flared in the second half as Ladner’s tenacity and discipline frustrated the home side, ultimately leading to a red card for Mission’s coach. With neither side able to find a winner in regulation, the match headed to a dramatic penalty shootout to decide the Division 2 title. Ladner started strong, converting their first two penalties while Mission missed both of theirs. However, the drama was far from over. Ladner missed their next two, while Mission drew level, forcing sudden death. After

a crucial miss from Mission, William Khuu stepped up and calmly slotted home the winning penalty, sparking celebrations among the travelling supporters. While the club can now proudly call themselves Division 2 champions and look ahead to Division 1, uncertainty remains. Club officials have not yet confirmed if Ladner will accept promotion, with the decision hinging on how much of the current squad will return for next season. Regardless, the 2024/25 campaign will go down as one of the most memorable in Ladner FC’s history. - Submitted

It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Joanne Harris (nee: Pohoreski) on April 27, 2025, at Delta Hospital. Born on January 11, 1929, in Lenvale, SK, she was the youngest of eight children. Times were tough, but the family made the best of the circumstances. Recognizing there was not much of a future for her in Lenvale, Joanne left home at the age of 17 for Winnipeg, where she attended business school. From there, in 1951, she moved to Montreal, where she worked for TCA (Air Canada) and took full advantage of her passes to see the world. She also took up skiing and golf and nurtured her love of knitting, cooking and baking. Again, with an adventurous spirit, in 1961, she picked up and moved to Vancouver, where she met and married Geoff in April of 1966. They promptly moved to Tsawwassen, started a family and set down deep roots in the community. A tireless volunteer, a long-time member of Tsawwassen United Church, and a Board Member of Kyndred Community Living (DCLS), Joanne’s impact on the Delta community went beyond her positive spirit. From championing the 'pie ladies' to playing the piano in our care homes to knitting and baking for fundraising efforts – if she wanted to do it, it got done. Survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Geoff; daughters Nancy (Doug) and Linda; two grandsons, Thomas and Mathew; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends in the Delta community. The family would like to thank the team at Delta Hospital for their tremendous care and to thank our local community for their kindness and well wishes. PITMAN, George Harry

With great sadness, we announce the passing of George Harry Pitman on April 25, 2025, age 87, at Lady Minto Hospital on Salt Spring Island. George was born on March 4th, 1938, in Toronto, Ontario to Bill and Amy Pitman. At the age of 10, he and his family moved to Vancouver and his life-long love of the West Coast began. He married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn (nee Burgess) in 1960 shortly after graduation. Together they built boats, cruised the coastal waters, and flew in planes piloted by George. In 1966, George began building a home in Tsawwassen in anticipation of the birth of their only child, Carrie, who made a surprise arrival on George’s birthday in 1967. Shortly before this, George started his career with Federal Pioneer. He had a natural talent for sales and was a strong and passionate leader. George stayed with Federal Pioneer/Schneider Electric for over 30 years. He was an innovator, problem solver, and a friend as well as a mentor to those he worked with. After decades of boating, George began a search for what would become a retirement home in the early 80s. His love of the Gulf Islands drew him to Salt Spring where he and Marilyn purchased the perfect lot in Maracaibo and together, they built their dream home. George was never happier than when he was sitting on his deck, enjoying the ocean breeze, and sipping a martini. After retirement, George and Marilyn continued their adventures first in a motor home taking trips through the US and Mexico, and then later in Case Grande, Arizona where they enjoyed winters with the many friends they had made. In 2017, George lost his “partner in crime” when Marilyn passed. George found companionship and love with Josephine Chai, a long-term family friend. Josephine was an unwavering support for George and cared for him with love and kindness during the last years of his life. George was a person who loved life, enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and never met a gin martini he didn’t like. He worked tirelessly to achieve his dreams, always seeing what he could accomplish with hard work. He had an excellent sense of humour, loved telling a good story, and seemed to have an endless number of interests. His larger-than-life personality has left an equally sized hole in our hearts. He is survived by his partner Josephine Chai, his daughter Carrie (Rob), and his grandchildren Ella and Matteo. In his final hours he was with Josephine and Carrie, surrounded by love. At his request, we will be celebrating his life at a private family gathering. We would like to thank the staff at Lady Minto Hospital for their care and dedication.

Fi[ passed away surrounded by her loved ones on the 28th of April. She is predeceased by her parents and survived by her brother, along with numerous friends who will always love her. Fi[ enjoyed time with friends, her cigarettes, her Sauvignon Blanc and of course, that glass of Prosecco. Bedazzled in pink, a touch of bling, and her magnetic 1000-watt smile, she never failed to greet anyone she met with a “Hello darling!” Fi[ was particularly fond of dogs and carried a stash of treats in her handbag for any “pooch” who stopped to greet her. She enjoyed travelling and made lifelong friends in every country she visited. Fiona owned a salon in the UK and continued a successful career as a Master Stylist in Canada. Fi[ marched to the beat of her own drum throughout life. We shall forever miss Fi[, her warmth, kindness, generosity and her gregarious persona that will live on in our hearts. She gets the last words to describe her beautiful life. As she herself would say, it was “bloody marvellous!” Memorial Service will be at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Delta, on May 10 from 2:00 PM onwards.
