Aftermorethaneight yearsofpromises, $300million spent andalmostnothing to showforit, there’snot alotfortheNDP government to brag aboutwhenitcomes to the George Massey Tunnelproject. Whichis perhapswhy Transportation Minister Mike Farnworthdidn’ttrythathard to do so whenquizzed aboutthe issue recentlyduringhisministry’s estimates.

Farnworth had to deployallthe ducking anddodging at his discretionformorethananhour to get outofthe simpleandobvious questions aboutwhytheNDP governmentcontinues to slow play the Massey project, despite promisinginthree electionsnow to solvewhat isthe largesttraffic bottleneckintheprovince.

“Weare buildingthe right projectthat is approved, was requested by the region,” said Farnworth. “It will be to the right heights, the right lane widths, the right everything.”

Maybeone day. Long inthe distantfuture, beyond2030.

Butinthemeantime, there’s barely ahintofanyactivity aroundthe current tunnel, which links Delta to Richmond.

“Why hasittaken since2017 to move forward and getthis tunnel builtwhennothing’s happened?”asked Delta SouthMLA Ian Paton. “I drive throughthere severaltimesa week, andIdon’t seeanexcavator, Idon’t see a bulldozer, Idon’t seeanything happening,” Paton said.

“I expectconstruction will startin2026,in termsofwhat the memberislookingfor— bulldozers, diggers, those kindsof things,” replied Farnworth.

That timelineisshaky, at best. Theproject just submittedanew applicationforanenvironmental assessmentcertificateon May9.

It’s inthe early stagesofacomplexenvironmental reviewpro-

cess. The work involvesdropping aneweight-lane tunnelinto the salmon-and sturgeon-bearing Fraser River, thendecommissioningtheexisting65-year-old tunnel.

Patonquizzed Farnworth abouttheimpact on fish and localfarmland because of the NDP’s decision to buildthe tunnel, ratherthana10-lanebridge.

He joked, at one point, that perhapstheNDPcould exempt the Massey throughits environmentalassessmentsonceit passes Bill15andgives cabinet authority to give specialtreatment to specialprojects.

Farnworthdidnottake the bait withacomment.

Oppositiontransportationcritic Harman Bhangu asked Farnworth how government can be building thefive-lane Steveston Interchange as part ofthis project, just northof the tunnelin Richmond, without knowing wherethenew tunnelis going to sit.

“Thecontractorsare working closely withthedesignofthe tunnel, to ensure that the two, in fact, fit together,” replied Farnworth There’stheissueoftheprice. The government hastried to insisttheproject will remain at the$4.15billion budgetlevelit set in2021—despitealmost every other capitalprojectontheprovince’s books, fromhospitals to schools, goingdramatically overbudgetthe last four yearsdue to theescalatingcostsof materials and labour.

“Hasthat figure been revised internally sinceprocurement began? Willthecost rise above $5billionor$6billion?”asked Banghu.

Previoustransportationminister Rob Fleming had beenadamant the budget was setin stone Farnworth, who took overthe portfolioin November, hedged his bets.

“Right now, what’s takingplace isthedesign work in collaboration withthedesign builderand theministry, refiningthedecision and to work towardsan agreeduponprice,” he said. Nobody believesthe Massey Tunnelproject willactuallyhold its$4.15-billion budgetwhen (andif)construction beginsin 2026,five yearsaftertheinitial figures were conceived. Andit’s almostimpossible to believe that the massiveconstructionproject won’tblowthroughwhatever new budgetis set before (and

if) it finishesin2030. Whichis perhapsone reasonthefederal governmentdoesn’t want to get draggeddown into the muck by partnering withtheprovinceon the Massey.

Premier David Ebytriedand failed to getfundingcommitmentson numerous occasions frompreviousprimeminister JustinTrudeau.

“I have been very frustrated by thefactthat we haven’t seen sufficientfederal supportforthat project,” Eby saidin April, before the recentfederalelection.

Ottawa offered a few hundred million last year, but B.C. turned itdown, arguingitdeservedafull 50-50cost-sharearrangement withOttawa.

“Theinitialdiscussions we had withthefederal government in termsoftheir supportforthe project wouldn’t evencoverthe interest on thecostoftheproject, letalonea substantial part of the capitalthat’s required to build this out,” said Eby.

Mark Carney’sfederal Liberals wontheelection. They picked upfivenew seatsin B.C. without Carney having to promise adollarforthe Massey or mentionthe projectonce.

Maybe Eby canconvince Carney to come to thetable. But morelikely,thelong-delayed, faux-budgeted, roilingquagmire that is the Massey project, will continue to be solelythe B.C. NDP’s problem.

Kora’s Corner will remain butthe Rubber Duck Museum will be openingnorthofthe border.

“It’soneofa kindand we didnot want to get rid ofit,” said King.

The rubberduck store will have abroad audi-

“It’s going to sellall different kindsof rubber ducks, alldifferent sizes. If youlove it, we’veprobably gotaduck ofit.”

They hadthought aboutexpandingtheshop but said Point Roberts isnot bouncing back as soonastheythought.

When U.S. President DonaldTrump’santiCanadian rhetoric began inthenew year, along withthetalk abouttariffs and Canadianshoppers boycotting the U.S., the numberofvisitors dropped.

Timing worked out well withfindingaplaceinthe mall,he said.

King says henoticed the numberofshoppers starteddwindlingaround February, withfoottraffic down by 40 to 50 percent.

Point Robertsin general is slowingdown,he said.

“It’s really sad.Alotof ourdeliverytrucks are notcomingasoftennow. It’s just quiet. It’s slow It’s just weird overall.”

He compared theeffect to that caused by the pandemicin2020,though the rest ofthe worldisn’t goingthroughthe same thing.

“It just kindof happened overnight. It’s superfast. There’sno helpnow,”and everyone istrying to dowhat they can, headded. “We’re notblaminganybody. We don’t have anyanimosity towardsanybodyor anythingespecially our Canadianfriends.

“ We just can’t waitfor this to all be over, basically.”

Former Point Roberts chamberofcommerce presidentBrian Calder saidthe economyis worseninginthetiny bordercommunitynext to Tsawwassen.

He saidtarifftalkand Canadians’ reaction againstTrumpandhis threats to annex Canada, caused anotherdropin business, about20 percent, just asthecommunity recoveredfromthe pandemic.

“… the Canadians… got their backsup, and rightly so,andthey just refused to comeanymore,” Calder said, notingthat Canadiansform90 percentof Point Roberts’ customer base “It was strictly anemotional reaction to Trump’sthreats.”

It’s worsenow than

duringthe2020 pandemic, headded, because some Canadiansdid come back later.

“They’re voluntarily notcoming,” Calder said, eventhoughthey want to supportthe businesses.

“Butthey’re just so incensed aboutTrump threatening Canadian sovereignty, they’re just saying, ‘To hell with you, Mr.Trump.’“

Business ownersthere arenowusingtheir own savings to try to survive, headded.

Community Shepherdinghopein a changing world

“The Lord is my shepherd;Ishallnot want.”

Theseopening words of Psalm23 have comforted generations, not merelyas poetry, butas a profounddeclaration of trustindivine guidance amidstuncertainty.

In recent weeks, the world has witnessed theelectionofanew CanadianPrime Minister andtheascensionof a new Pope twopivotal momentsthat have stirred bothhopeand hesitation.

Asheadlinesunfoldand policiesaredebated, one truth remainsconstant: leadership mattersdeeply. Butwhilethe worldoften measures leadershipin powerand popularity, Scriptureinvitesus to a different standard—the tender, steady handofthe Good Shepherd.

At a local seniors home,a resident recently said to me, “Leader’s change, butthe Shepherd whobroughtmethrough warandexile hasn’t failedme yet.”

We participateinthe democraticprocess, yes— butmore so, we shepherd ourcommunity by listening well, serving humbly, and standing withthevulnerable.

To be led by the Good Shepherdis to become shepherds ourselves—in ourfamiliesandneighbourhoods.

Icelandictravellingtapestry comes to Point Roberts

In a small town in Iceland, witha populationof1,000, two women,a secondary history teacherand a regionallibrarian, imaginedandcreated a sewing projectthat took sevenlong yearsand sevenmonths to complete, called The Saga of Njal.

The world wasinvited to participate, andthe tapestry was sewn and embroidered by notonly many local Icelanders,

butalso peopleofall ages from150countriesand sixcontinents. This massive tapestry measures 90-metreslongor the lengthofa U.S. football field. It may be the longest, continuous, handembroidered tapestry on earth.

Njal’s Saga isa story of passionandintrigue about10thand11th Century Vikings. Asmallertravelling panelmeasuring18-feet long wascreated to

DELTA SPORTS SunDevilsJVplayersselectedtoTeamBC

IAN JACQUES

ijacques@delta-optimist.com

Fourplayersfromthe South Delta Sun Devils Junior Varsity football team have been selected to Team BC forthe Western Challenge in early July,in Manitoba. Grade9players

Easton Geisbrecht, Ty MacGregor (both wide receiversanddefensive backs),Akshaan Gill(running back anddefensive line)and Simon Klukas (running back anddefensive line) were selected to thefinal team rosterafter eight weeksof two-a-day practicesand evaluations by the Team BC coaching staffinLangley.

Alloftheplayers say theyareexcited forthe

opportunity to notonly compete at ahigherlevel, butalsoimprovetheir skillsandfitnesslevels

inpreparationforthe startoftraining camp in August forthenew high school seasonin

September. Junior varsity head coach Scott Martens saidheisproud and excited forthe guys.

“Thisshowsthe skills ofthese guys and the skilled guys that we have returning to the JV

programthis year,” said Martens. “Team BC could have two SDSS running backsand two SDSS receivers, whichisalot fora teamofthat nature. It’s competition … it’s beingaroundfootball andhelpscreate more intelligent players. They will have morelive reps, which you don’t have in theoff-season, so to go to a Canada Cuplikethis and get to play in twoor three games, just helps withtheconfidence and just understandingofthe game.

“They will be exposed to different schemesand just makesthemmore well-roundedplayers, whichis turn, just helps ourprogram potentially get stronger.”
