Paxton now on Baseball Canada’s Wall of Excellence IAN JACQUES

Ladner’s James Paxton is among elite company as one of Canada’s best baseball players. At the 2026 Baseball Canada awards banquet and fundraiser last Saturday (Jan. 10), Paxton became the 14th inductee on to Baseball Canada’s Wall of Excellence, presented by RBC Wealth Management. The awards, now in their 22nd year, celebrate Canadian baseball stars from the past, present and future. Paxton joins previous inductees Larry Walker, Justin Morneau, Joey Votto, Ernie Whitt, Ryan Dempster, Jason Bay, Russell Martin, Jeff Francis, Paul Quantrill, John Axford, Adam Loewen, Michael Saunders and Stubby Clapp. The evening in Toronto also recognized current Canadian big leaguers including rookie stars Denzel Clarke, Liam Hicks and Jonah Tong; recent junior national team standouts Sean Duncan and Will Hynes; longtime women’s national team star Alli Schroder; and featured a special tribute to the Toronto Blue Jays in honour of their historic 2025 season. An athlete whose journey went from Ladner to major league stardom,

Paxton has left an indelible mark on Canadian baseball. He first emerged on the national stage as a teenager with the junior national team, helping Canada capture bronze at the 2006 World Junior Baseball Championships in Cuba. His ascent continued at the University of Kentucky, where he quickly became one of the most dominant pitchers in the SEC. As a sophomore, Paxton delivered

a complete-game shutout to clinch a conference tournament berth, and by 2009 he was Kentucky’s Friday-night ace, finishing third in the NCAA with an exceptional 13.22 strikeouts per nine innings. Drafted initially by the Toronto Blue Jays in 2009, Paxton ultimately began his professional journey with the Seattle Mariners and made his MLB debut on Sept. 7, 2013.
From 2017 through 2019, he posted seasons of 12, 11, and 15 wins, firmly establishing himself as one of baseball’s premier left-handed starters. On May 8, 2018, Paxton delivered a moment that will forever live in Canadian baseball history: a no-hitter thrown on Canadian soil at Rogers Centre. He exclaimed afterwards, “To have it happen in Canada … It’s pretty amazing. Just very special. And against the Blue Jays? You couldn’t write this stuff.” His career later took him to New York, where he helped the Yankees reach the American League Championship Series, highlighted by a must-win Game 5 victory over Houston in which he outdueled Justin Verlander with nine strikeouts over six dominant innings. He would go on to make additional stops in Seattle, Boston, and Los Angeles, completing a career that ranks among the greatest ever by a Canadian starting pitcher. Across his 11 Major League seasons, he finished inside the top 10 among Canadians in wins, strikeouts, wins above replacement, and games started, cementing his legacy as one of this country’s most accomplished arms. - with files from Baseball Canada

Canada’s new immigration policies impacting number of international students in Delta SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
More students are staying for shorter terms in the Delta School District’s International Student Program. At the board of education’s Jan. 6 meeting, Karen Symonds, director of international programs, provided an update on the program’s current enrolment and projections for the coming semester and year. Symonds noted there are several reasons for the current decline that are not unique to Delta. Those include the Canadian government’s greater restrictions on issuing temporary resident visas, reducing the number of families hoping to come to Canada. “Those policies don’t apply to elementary and secondary students, but it creates an overall feeling that Canada is not as open to people coming for a short-term basis than in the past. There are some other factors in there as well, but that is one of the main factors in that,” she said. A couple of Delta schools

Theo Prass, from Germany, an international student who attends South Delta Secondary, showed impressive piano playing at the recent school board meeting. have also seen declines because of a shortage of homestays in those areas, but other schools are holding steady. The total enrolment, as of January 2026, is at 624 students, down 22 from the same time last year. As far as the expected length
of stay is concerned, as of January 2026, 173 students are expected to graduate this year, while 191 students are in Delta for a full year and 260 for less than 10 months. Regarding the increasing trend of students coming for shorter terms, typically five months, Symonds explained
that there are some significant declines in students coming from certain countries where students would normally come from in order to stay longer in Delta and graduate. As those students are graduating, they are not being replaced by more students coming from those countries.
When it comes to new applications, as of January 2026, the program is currently at 273, almost the same as last year, but down from more than 20 from two years ago. The number of those expected to return for 2026/27 is 145, down almost 40 from 2025/26. Beach Grove Elementary has the most international students at the elementary level with a dozen, while Delta Secondary has the most at the high school level at 129, which is just one ahead of South Delta Secondary. The presentation included several high school students in the program sharing their experiences, conveying many positives about personal growth, learning and friendships made. Their insightful presentations also had some humour. Germany continues to be the top country of origin for applications with 184 this school year, with the top 10 rounded out by Japan, Italy, Spain, China, Brazil, South Korea, Turkey, Mexico and Thailand.

Only two register opposition to Deas Island land removal Established in 1981, the park is currently 91 hectares (224 acres) SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Almost nobody in the entire Metro Vancouver region submitted a response of opposition to a proposal to remove land from Deas Island
Regional Park in Delta. This fall, the regional district initiated an alternative approval process for a removal as part of the George Massey Tunnel replacement project, which requires 1,846-square-metres of
the regional park for permanent highway expansion, as well as approximately 42,791-squaremetres to be leased for temporary construction laydown and working space during construction.
Metro is the registered owner of the simple lands. The regional district first must remove park dedication of those lands which could be achieved by way of a bylaw, but the adoption of that bylaw

by the Metro board first required approval of the electors, which could be obtained by means of an alternative approval process. To make the determination of the number of electors, Metro staff requested a voters’ list for the participating area from Elections BC, and that list indicated that there were 1,752,298 eligible electors. It was recommended that number be considered a fair determination of the number of eligible electors for the participating area. Based on the number of eligible electors, 175,230 was the number of electors who must have submitted signed elector response forms to prevent the Metro board from adopting the bylaw. An update report to the board notes that the number of elector responses received before
the deadline was two, which equates to zero per cent. As that is less than 10 percent of the number of electors in the area to which the approval process applies, approval of the electors through the alternative approval process has been obtained, the report notes. The land to be sold to the province for the highway expansion is a narrow triangular parcel adjacent to the east of Hwy. 99. The land to be leased as a temporary laydown area for the construction, meanwhile, will require the clearing of trees and vegetation. While the BC Ministry of Transportation and Transit will undertake restoration of the leased land once the project is complete, it will likely take multiple decades for the park to be re-established to its current condition, a previous report notes.

City makes more changes PRESENTS to its heritage levy Lon Schieder
Judy Collins AN EVENING WITH
SANDOR GYARMATI
s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
Should a City of Delta levy be cancelled and a growing pot of its funds be directed elsewhere? Despite having conveyed dismay over the years about the lack of applications since the program was introduced in 2017, council has given no indication it is ready to scrap the heritage conservation fund. However, council recently approved further changes aimed at increasing participation by owners of homes deemed to have heritage value, as the pot of money available has grown to more than $886,000. The grant program was created from a special levy on Delta building permits to help property owners in the retention and maintenance of those heritage properties. During a November 2019 council discussion on the faltering program, when the fund at the time had a balance of $230,933, Mayor George Harvie said the fund wasn’t aimed at building up a pot of money “to squirrel away” and, if it’s not better utilized, maybe the levy should be removed. By the summer of 2021, the fund had a balance of $319,925. At that time, only a few property owners applied due to the requirements being too onerous. The city made several changes to the program to make it easier to apply but
didn’t see a significant uptick in applications. Earlier this year, council instructed staff to undertake a review for more refinements, and several changes were put forward for council’s approval recently. The changes include an increase in the maximum financial assistance for a property in a single year from $30,000 to $50,000, an increase in the financial assistance to 100 percent of the capital costs of an approved project for accessibility upgrades up to $150,000, expand eligibility criteria to include energy efficient projects that preserve a heritage property, as well as using funds towards the restoration and repair of city-owned heritage properties that are in the budgeting process. However, staff did not propose to remove the requirement that properties receiving grants must be on or added to the heritage register or the requirement for a covenant protecting the building for 10 years. A staff report also notes that while the money collected continued to exceed the awarding of grants, recent updates to the Delta consolidated fees and charges bylaw increased building permit fees, which came into effect Jan. 1, 2026. As the heritage conservation levy was collected as a percentage, the increase to the building permit fees would have consequently resulted in an increase to the levy for every application.

Major additions proposed for John Oliver Park SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
Delta council, in early 2026, will receive a staff report on the feedback gathered on proposed big changes to John Oliver Park. The new features could include, outdoor pickleball courts, a multi-use sports indoor facility, playgrounds and a dog park, as well as a central pathway connecting pedestrian and cycling routes. The site currently consists of four natural grass fields primarily serving football, soccer and rugby. Building on input from field sport groups, three example layouts for the site had been developed for further community discussion, and feedback was gathered this past fall. Based on that feedback, as well as further technical analysis, a final lay-

out will be presented to council, noting that with council’s direction, that layout will be submitted to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) for approval. A Delta staff report last year noted that the sports park, located at the intersection of Hwys. 99 and 91, with its large footprint and central location, remains the city’s most promising opportunity for the development of a large multi-sport tournament

complex. “Despite the park’s convenient location at the nexus of three major roadways, access to the park has been a long-standing challenge due to the undeveloped park entrance along busy Ladner Trunk Road. The city engaged a consultant to do a traffic study in 2009 which recommended the installation of a signalized intersection, though upgrades have not progressed and are complicated by the proximity of the park entrance to the Hwy. 91 on-ramp,” the report notes. Tied into the city’s parallel parks, recreation and master plan update process, the various enhancements for the sports fields are currently estimated to have a price tag in the $60to-$100 million range, which is why a phased development was recommended.

GFL wants to renew air discharge permit for East Ladner facility SANDOR GYARMATI
s g ya rm a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
GFL Environmental Inc. has applied to the regional district to continue discharging air contaminants from the company’s aerobic composting facility on 72nd Street in East Ladner. Holding an online information meeting for residents this Friday, Jan. 16, GFL is currently operating under approvals which expire March 20, 2026, and authorizes four existing sources, which expire March 15, 2026, and authorizes two new sources introduced in 2025. GFL is requesting a new permit authorizing all six sources with a 20-year term to March 2046. The composting facility receives approved organic waste, including food waste, and processes it into nutrientrich compost and landscaping products, such as planting mix and soil mix. GFL also uses its own products at its sod farm, West Coast Instant Lawns.
Before the completion of the facility upgrades, East Ladner residents filed hundreds of complaints with Metro Vancouver about the odour produced by the GFL facility. Metro Vancouver issued an air quality permit for the new facility in 2018, paving the way for a transition to a fully enclosed composting building, which was completed in September 2020. Delta council the following year endorsed an application by the operation to amend its regional composting licence so that it is consistent with the new fully enclosed composting facility and associated processes. The amendment does not change the types or quantity of material allowed to be processed. The composting licence also does not authorize or regulate the emission of odourous air contaminants from the facility as that aspect of the operation is addressed within an air-quality permit. The public meeting information will be available at: www.gfldelta.com.

OPINION Local news matters Editor’s Note
D
IAN JACQUES
oes local news matter? It’s a question that I have been asked more and more frequently over the past few months as I have been out and about attending events in our community. The Op imis continues to be one of the oldest newspapers still publishing in print and online in Canada. The first Op imis was printed back in 1922. To be one of the oldest newspapers in Canada is a milestone that we do not take lightly. It is a privilege to be able to serve this community for so many years and we hope for many more years to come. In our Year in Review edition (Jan. 1), we published a short story on the top Op imis web stories of the year. Our web traffic is vital to the success of our overall operations. I can’t stress enough the importance of our website and our newsletters as there is always more content on our website that is not in our print product. Overall, we had 5,315,000 website views in the past year, which works out to an average of 442,990 website viewers per month. At Lodestar Media (we have rebranded from our previous name Glacier Media), our six publications in the B.C. community news division saw almost 38 million pages read on our websites, over five million newspapers printed and delivered more than five million newsletters to subscribers inboxes that were opened and read. These are impressive numbers. Our web traffic grew overall between the six publications by 33 percent compared to the year prior. Our audience is massive and growing, and local news is more relevant and important than ever. And we achieved these numbers by reader and brand loyalty. So, as I close the books officially (even though we are 12 days into 2026), as I pen this column, I want to say thank you to our readers, advertisers and supporters of not only the Op imis , but all our community newspapers. Trusted news sources matter. Local news matters. The numbers from last year certainly prove that.
2026 off to an unpredictable start for those of us looking outward
I
t’s mid January and I’m already exhausted from the overlapping crises coming out of the White House from President Donald Trump and his administration. As my niece in Portland, Ore., says, “We wake up every day wondering what’s next.” The world order feels slightly off its axis. Power struggles amongst nations makes Canada less secure as America takes bold action to assert its own interests. It’s still surprising that relations between our most friendly neighbours could go so wrong, so fast. We don’t want to hear any more suggestions about becoming the 51st state. We are Canadians, true north strong and free. While 90 percent of Canadians live within 150 kilometres of the border, trips down south were down by 35 percent last year. Sorry Point Roberts, but I don’t

even want to go to pick up a parcel, and Trader Joe’s in Bellingham will have to wait. Over the holidays we were given tickets to a Canucks hockey game. A highlight of the night was the singing of our national anthem. As the two giant maple leaf flags rolled over top of the crowd, I beamed. I’m cheering because national pride has swelled in the last year.
The majority of our Canadian news sources are obsessed with the analysis of our southern neighbours. With our dependence on U.S. trade it’s to be expected. Yet I believe most of us find the saturation of American news and information day in and day out hard to stomach as news from the south intensifies. Our family and work challenges consume most of our energy so we would be forgiven for pulling the covers over our head and ignoring the daily disruptions to the world order. Don’t turn away. Now, more than ever, it is important to watch what’s going on outside our communities. Remain engaged, even if it’s for a short period. Talk to your friends about how you are feeling and remain compassionate toward others with different opinions.

FraserHealthneedsreview Editor: “We are working on it.” Once again, Fraser Health has used that meaningless phrase because of their lack of progress on our healthcare debacle! To quote Delta Coun. Dylan Kruger in an Optimist story in 2025, “earlier this year, I called for a public health emergency in Delta after our hospital’s ER faced multiple closures leaving
our community without access to urgent care . . . Delta has the longest ambulance-wait times in Metro Vancouver, . . . jeopardizing the health and safety of our residents “ Dr. Brian Day, author of My Fight For Canadian Healthcare, having spent 13 years fighting provincial and federal governments to improve our health care said, “spending the most money, Canada is in
the top three internationally as per performance. We are down to 30/31st worst in the world and 26 percent of all doctors have had a patient die on the waiting list!” We are overdue for a complete, independent review of Fraser Health, and the provincial government and their inability to look after the health of residents of B.C. Here’s how to help Pt. Roberts Editor: The U.S. Coast Guard could quickly establish an Aframax tanker interdiction base at Point Roberts and board and confiscate Aframax tankers bound for China and
take the Aframax tankers to Cherry Point, in Washington state. They could also relocate their customs office from Friday Harbour to Point Roberts and process the deportation of
Aframax crews to their home countries. This would stabilize Canada-U.S. relations and provide a stable economic base for Point Roberts. Robert Dow Leighton

BC Ombudsperson releasesupdatedguide for council meetings The Office of the Ombudsperson has released an updated edition of its Open Meetings: Best Practices for Local Governments guide, designed to support cities, regional districts, and other local governments in meeting their legal obligations to hold meetings that are open, accessible, and transparent. Originally published in 2012, the guide has been comprehensively updated to reflect legal, operational, and societal changes that have occurred in the more than a decade since its initial release. The revised version addresses evolving meeting practices – including the rise of electronic and hybrid formats – and incorporates updated legislation such as the Accessible BC Act and the Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act, as well as lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic. “This guide helps clarify the rules around when meetings must be open to the public and how local governments can meet
their obligations,” said BC Ombudsperson Jay Chalke. “Clear and accessible guidance ensures that local decisionmaking is transparent, accountable, and aligned with the law.” In recent years, concerns about transparency and closed-door decisionmaking have drawn considerable public attention. The ombudsperson says this guide responds to the growing need for clarity about what the law requires, and provides practical support to local governments across the province. “Local governments make decisions that affect communities every day,” said Chalke. “When those decisions are made openly and transparently, it fosters trust and confidence in our democratic institutions.” The updated guide includes: Practical best practices for complying with open meeting requirements Clarification on when and how meetings can be closed to the public Guidance on emerging

challenges such as hybrid meeting formats, accessibility obligations, and maintaining clear and adequate records. The revised guide follows a public consultation period in fall 2025 during which the office received feedback from provincial and local governments as well as members of the public. The final version incorporates those insights and serves as both an educational tool and a preventative resource for local governments across the province. In the BC Ombudsperson’s 2024/25 Annual Report, complaints about local government made up 13 percent of all complaints received – the fourth highest category. Among those, concerns about council member conduct, including compliance with open meetings rules, were among the most commonly reported issues. The updated guide is available now at bcombudsperson.ca. - Submitted

Her iconic recording of Joni Mitchell’s Both Sides Now from the 1967 album Wildflowers was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, while her rendi-
tion of Stephen Sondheim’s Send in the Clowns earned the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1975. During her career, she has released 55 albums, achieved numerous gold and platinum records, and received widespread critical acclaim. In recent years, Collins has
continued to experience a creative renaissance. Her 55th album, Spellbound (2022), marked the first time she wrote all the songs on a single album and was nominated for Best Folk Album at the 65th Grammy Awards. The album was praised for its introspective, deeply personal exploration of life, resilience, and artistry. Beyond music, Collins remains a powerful cultural force. She is an author, filmmaker, activist, keynote speaker, and mentor to emerging artists. In March 2025, she released her first book of poetry, Sometimes It’s Heaven, further showcasing the lyrical vulnerability that has defined her career. With a legacy spanning seven decades and a presence that continues to captivate audiences worldwide, Collins remains a living legend. A Delta Naturalists Society trip report to Centennial Beach THEA BECKMAN
D e l t a N a t u ra l i s t s S o c i e t y
Every quarter or so, the Delta Naturalists Society (DNS) flings open its doors to the general public for one of its weekly birding walks. The most recent one, held on Sunday, Dec. 28, was a roaring success with more than 20 people in attendance: seven
Delta Naturalists regulars and a lively contingent of newcomers who bravely decided to spend their morning peering into bushes with strangers. Under the rambunctious stewardship of Thea Beckman, a club member since 2020, the birding kicked off at 9 a.m. sharp. Numerous Bald Eagles dotted the winter-bare trees, while
a sizable flock of Brewer’s Blackbirds churned through the area with Red-winged Blackbirds and European Starlings stitched in among them. The bushes and brambles around the pond were alive with large flocks of Goldencrowned and White-crowned Sparrows, while the water itself was dotted with Mallard
Ducks, American Wigeons, and a lone male Northern Shoveler, flashing handsome chestnut flanks. From there, the group headed toward the beach under high, overcast clouds that mercifully held their rain. Along the shoreline, a small flock of Sanderling—diminutive whiteand-black shorebirds—skittered along the surf line, per-
petually just out of reach of the lapping waves. A pair of Black Oystercatchers flew past, their long, candy-red bills stark against the steel-gray backdrop of the ocean. Out over the water, large flocks of Brant Geese streamed past in determined lines, while farther offCONTINUED: see Page 17

What is a reverse mortgage?
Soft tissue management is the answer you are seeking. Rehabilitation of soft tissues is primary. First, your dentures require cleaning to remove offensive organisms that may be contributing to the inflammation and edema (swelling). A reverse mortgage available to homeowners aged 55 and older. A reverse mortgage allows you to access a portion of the equity in your home which can be taken out in a single lump sum or as monthly income.

Unlike a standard mortgage in which monthly payments are made to the lender, a reverse mortgage does not require principal payments. The loan balance is repaid in full when a homeowner sells, moves or passes away.

How can you help in designing an ad that will get the readers’ attention amongst the other ads and the articles in the paper?
Are older Canadian banknotes worth much money? For almost all Canadian banknotes from 1969 to date, only uncirculated notes have a chance to be worth more than face value. All used bills, they need to be deposited into the bank. Last week I did the monthly cash deposit and I found Jim Richardson, out that the Bank of Canada has changed the rules owner on older banknotes. We were unable to directly deposit them but had to fill out forms to send the Bank of Canada with the notes. Payment to us would be after the bank receives them. I believe this is the beginning of demonetizing the older notes like most other countries in the Western Coin & Stamp world is already doing.

Here are the five most important points in creating a good ad: 1. Lead with a strong headline. It should be interesting and try not to be too cliché. Is not everyone tired of all the “Best Kept Secrets” that are in every marketplace today? 2. Use a graphic element that ties into the product(s) being sold and that will attract attention. 3. Make sure your ad copy describes at least one benefit for the potential customer. Why should they buy that product now and/or why should they buy it at all?
Sarah Strother Publisher Delta Optimist
4. There must be a call to action. Create a sense of urgency so the reader has a reason to act on the information in the ad. 5. Tell them who you are and where you are. Design a strong logo and use a font relevant to the business you are in. Always include your address, website, phone number etc.

Community CONTINUED from Page 16 offshore, dark flotillas of Scoters bobbed on the waves. Through the protected dune area, the group was hopeful for a glimpse of the unusual wintering female Mountain Bluebird that had been in the area for weeks. Alas, she was hunkered somewhere out of sight. Birding, as ever, keeps one humble. Near the pumphouse, the wetlands were bustling. Large flocks of Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, and Lesser Scaup crowded the water. A lone
Horned Grebe dove repeatedly for food, popping up just long enough to tease the group before disappearing again beneath the surface. Northern Harrier quartered the marshes, gliding low and methodically, searching for a late breakfast. Total bird species for the day came to 31, which is a little low for Centennial Beach, but more than respectable given the relaxed pace of an introductory walk. More importantly, most of the group stuck it out for the full two hours, asked excellent questions, and seemed genuinely delighted by what they’d seen.

Hi, Dr McPhie is there anything other than new year’s resolutions I can do to have a great year? Skip New Year’s resolutions. They rely on motivation, which is unreliable under stress. Capacity building is different. It strengthens the systems that make change sustainable. I love capacity medicine. And I love sharing capacity building systems with all my patients. Capacity means improving sleep, nervous system regulation, cardiovascular health, metabolic stability, and cognitive reserve before asking more of yourself. When capacity rises, better choices happen naturally with less effort and far less burnout.
Dr. Heli McPhie, BSc, N.D.
Focus this year on building the body and brain that can actually support your goals. Results follow structure, not willpower. We can help come see us Hugs, Dr Heli McPhie

God, as our creator, knows what is required for his people to flourish in life, so he calls us to abide by structured rhythms of rest. He advises us to take time away from our labour and make time for our loved ones, our well-being, and our relationship with God. This intentional rhythm of rest not only guards us from burnouts but teaches us humility, trusting God, and acknowledging the King of kings who provides and sustains life. I encourage you to examine your rhythms to include God-honouring rest.

Have you ever planned to go on a vacation where you needed to find a dog sitter, someone to water your plants, take out the garbage, and check your mail while you’re gone? Taking a break sometimes feels like more work than it ought to be, but enjoying quality time away often necessitates intentional planning; we don’t stumble upon it accidentally. I am writing this a few days before I begin my three-month sabbatical leave, but by the time you read it, I will already have begun my leave. To ensure I can be away from my work, I had to plan meticulously with my colleagues and create excel sheets and task lists to delegate my responsibilities. Rest doesn’t come naturally for many of us in our culture; we must

Tunnel Town curlers off to Newfoundland IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
A dream has been fulfilled for a pair of curlers from the Tunnel Town Curling Club in Tsawwassen. Team Cody Tanaka, comprised of skip Tanaka, third Jared Kolomaya, second Mitchell Kopytko, lead Coburn Fadden, fifth, Sam Husdon and coach Joshua Miki, captured the provincial men’s championship with a 6-5 win over the Jason Montgomery foursome from Shawnigan Lake. Team Tanaka went 7-2 over the course of the championship week in Esquimalt. Tanaka and Husdon grew up curing at Tunnel Town both starting at the young ages of 10 and 11-yearsold. They call Tunnel Town their home club and still curl together on Thursday nights in the club’s men’s league. The other members of the team are from Kamloops.

Now Team B.C., they are off to the Montana’s Brier in St. John’s, NL., Feb. 27 to March 8. Kolomaya has competed in a brier before, while for the other members, this will be their first crack at a Canadian championship. “It was an awesome week. Honestly, it’s a dream come true,” said Tanaka.
“There have been a lot of messages. I think we are the first team to represent Tunnel Town at the brier, so that’s really special for me. “As a curler growing up, you always dream of going to the brier and now that it has happened, I’m speechless. I really can’t believe that this is happening.”
Tanaka said the team stuck to a game plan and kept things simple. “We waited for the other team to make a mistake and when they did, we capitalized. I felt that strategy worked well for us the whole week,” he said. “They [Team Montgomery] were unbelievable all week. Honestly, every game that they played, they dominated. When we won the semifinal, we had a talk and said we had to just keep playing our game and hoped that it would be a close game. Lucky for us, we had a shot for the win.” Over the next few weeks, the team will get together in Kamloops and Tsawwassen for practice and to prepare. “It’s going to be Brad Gushue’s final brier in his hometown, so it’s going to be a lot of fun and pretty special,” said Tanaka. “We are an underdog team, but we’re going to battle every game and try and do B.C. proud.”
Sharpe looking for fresh start after trade to Vancouver IAN JACQUES
ijacques@delta-optimist.com
Will Sharpe is looking for a fresh start following a trade between the Kelowna Rockets and the Vancouver Giants. On Tuesday (Jan. 6), the Giants acquired the 18-year-old Ladner defenceman from the Rockets in exchange for forward Ty Halaburda, a secondround pick in 2028 (originally Everett’s) and a fourth-round
pick in 2028. “We are very excited to add Will to our blueline. As a 2007-born NHL-drafted defenceman, he will be a major piece for our team immediately,” Giants general manager Hnat Domenichelli said. “His leadership, skating ability and hockey IQ make him a perfect fit as we start a new era in Vancouver.” Sharpe was selected by the Los Angeles Kings in the seventh round of the 2025
NHL Draft, 216th overall, after recording a career-high 44 points last season in 66 games, split between the Lethbridge Hurricanes and Rockets. The Optimist caught up with Sharpe at the Ladner Leisure Centre on Thursday afternoon (Jan. 8) following his second practice with the Giants. “Obviously, it was a bit of a surprise. It was definitely a tough day for myself having to leave a great group of guys that
we have in Kelowna, but I feel like it’s an exciting opportunity for myself,” he said. “To be able to come back home and practise everyday in the rink I grew up playing in is pretty special. I don’t think I could have landed in a better position.” Sharpe was originally a first-round pick by Lethbridge in 2022, selected 11th overall. This season, the smooth-skating left-shot defender has 16 points in 31 games (3G-13A).

In his career, he has recorded 71 points in 157 career games (16G-55A). In 2023, Sharpe won a gold medal with Hockey Canada White at the U17 World Challenge. “I think a fresh start is needed for me, so I’m going into this with that mindset,” he said. “I’m just looking to keep developing my game the way I need to and obviously help this team get into a playoff spot and hopefully do something with it.”

Unwavering dedication. Attentive listening. Skilled and supportive guidance.
A new year often prompts homeowners to think about next steps — whether that’s downsizing, selling a long-time family home, or simply exploring options. You don’t need to have everything figured out to begin. My role is to walk you through the process, help you make sense of timing and choices, and support you from early conversations through to final decisions — at a pace that feels right. It starts with a conversation. Call or email to book a consultation.
