As 2025 comes to a close, I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for your incredible support throughout this year of immense growth.Together, we placed the first Occupational Stress Intervention Dog (OSID) in Alberta, opened an office and training centre in Edmonton, and completed construction on our brand-new facility. In addition to these successes, we also graduated 33 Guide Dog, Autism Service Dog and OSI-PTSD Service Dog teams this year. We’re incredibly proud to share that with these 33 teams, we have officially graduated over 400 teams since our start in 1996. We’re actively supporting 235 current teams in 76 communities across B.C. and Alberta. We share these accomplishments with our dedicated community of volunteers and donors whose generosity and support made these milestones possible. It has been an incredibly special journey with you, and the most exciting chapter is awaiting us in 2026 as we celebrate our 30th anniversary and mark the opening of our new home. The B.C. government has sued a trucking company and one of its drivers for damages after a truck slammed into a bridge along Hwy. 99. The incident, which occurred Dec. 28, 2023, involved Chohan Carriers Ltd. and driver Jasveer Singh Sangha, who was hauling an “over-height load” when it struck the 112th Street bridge underpass in Delta. The collision caused significant damage to the bridge’s concrete stringers and supporting structures, according to the lawsuit. The bridge strike was among a string of accidents involving trucking companies in recent years. In response, then minister of transportation Rob Fleming issued a formal cancellation notice to Chohan Freight Forwarders Ltd. for its operations in B.C. “This is the most severe action that can be taken against a company with multiple infractions. It sends a clear message to operators that infrastructure crashes around our province need to stop,” Fleming said in February 2024. “It has never been easier to follow a route to guide a load safely through our highway system and avoid the potential for impact with infrastructure.” At the time, Chohan’s drivers had been involved in six overpass and/or bridge crashes since 2021, including four

In the days following the Dec. 28, 2023, collision, Chohan said Sangha (who it claimed was not a company driver) failed to wait to receive his permit and route directions for his oversized load. Chohan later filed a lawsuit in B.C. Supreme Court against the transporta-
tion ministry in an effort to overturn the suspension of the company’s safety certificate. The Aldergrove-based company claimed it had suffered damage to its reputation, with the resulting loss of business costing it millions of dollars. The B.C. government’s latest lawsuit contends Sangha — whose occupation
and address remain unknown to the province — was a Chohan employee, company agent working under its authority, or had acquired the truck with the consent of Chohan. In any case, the province said Chohan is “vicariously liable” for Sangha’s conduct. The province claims the crash was the result of negligence. Sangha is accused of driving at an excessive speed, failing to stay in the proper lane, failing to maintain a proper distance from other vehicles, and operating a vehicle while impaired by fatigue, alcohol or drugs, the lawsuit says. The document claims the defendants failed to secure necessary oversized-load permits, ignored height restrictions, and failed to verify the route’s clearance. The claim also alleges Chohan Carriers failed to adequately train its driver or implement safety policies to prevent foreseeable infrastructure damage. The Ministry of Transportation and Transit is seeking to recover all costs related to repairs, including wages and materials, plus interest. The lawsuit does not indicate how much the accident cost the province. Sangha and Chohan Carriers have 21 days to respond. Canada Border Services Agency has announced another major drug seizure in Tsawwassen. In a news release on Monday, Dec. 22, the CBSA said that on Oct. 31, officers in Metro Vancouver marine operations intercepted more than 26 kilograms of cocaine from a marine shipment at the Tsawwassen Container Examination Facility (TCEF). With the support of CBSA’s Detector Dog Service, border services officers at TCEF found 23 bricks hidden in the ceiling of a shipping container declared to be carrying boxes of frozen fruit. A total of 26.2 kg of cocaine was seized from the container that originated in Colombia. The drugs were transferred to the RCMP Federal Policing Pacific Region,
Drugs and Organized Crime, for further investigation. “Drug cartels are constantly testing our borders and our ability to protect them,” said federal minister of public safety Gary Anandasangaree in a news release. “The people who work at CBSA are our first line of defence against these criminals and the drugs they want to bring into Canada. This seizure shows just how hard CBSA works to keep our borders secure and our communities safe.” CBSA regional director Nina Patel said the successful seizure is a direct result of the vigilance and dedication of the CBSA officers who keep our country safe. “We are proud of the strong partnership with the RCMP as we continue to fight against organized crime and protect our communities,” she added. CBSA also seized 4,300 litres of street drug precursor chemicals coming from China, at the same facility, last May.

Demand for bags of groceries is up at the South Delta Food Bank but the generosity of local folks is ensuring a smooth operation of the charity. Joe van Essen said that the number of clients for the food bank on Ladner Trunk Road has grown in the past year, but donations keep coming in and the food bank can help everyone who needs it. “We’re not desperate. We’re doing fine,” he said. “We’re not really struggling. We’re doing OK. The numbers have gone up, there’s no doubt about that. We’re spending more money of course to buy groceries, but still we are keeping our head above water,” as long as donations keep coming. Before the pandemic in 2020, the food bank was serving about 75 families. “Now, we’re serving about
130, with weekly bags of groceries. In the last few years, it has gone up,” said van Essen. A major issue is the cost of housing or rent in the community. “I believe really that the rent is so high for people to pay,” he said. Rent for a basement suite can be $2,000 a month, while renting a single room can cost $900 a month. “It’s not easy for folks that don’t make a lot of money,” he said. South Delta is great at Christmas time with stores, businesses, organizations and schools all stepping up with donations, he said. While other agencies have to get out the message about their campaigns, “We don’t even have to do that. It just seems to happen. It’s really good,” he added. food hampers provided every year by Deltassist. A report in September from the charity Food Banks Canada, said food insecurity continues to climb, but new government programs could ease financial strain. The organization’s 2025 Poverty Report Card gives Canada a failing grade on food insecurity and unemployment, but a C for legislative progress, making the overall mark a D. Citing data from Statistics Canada, the report suggests one in four Canadians deal with some form of food insecurity — from worrying about running out of food to going full days without eating. The data comes from the Canadian Income Survey, in 2023 and released earlier this year. Food Banks Canada CEO Kirstin Beardsley says the introduction of the Canadian Dental Care Plan and the National School Food Program could both help.

Delta Nature Reserve to be closed for a year during boardwalk replacement The Delta Nature Reserve is the only publicly accessible part of Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area and is accessed via 2.3 kilometres of wooden boardwalk SANDOR GYARMATI s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
The boardwalk at the Delta Nature Reserve will be closed to the public for a year as Metro Vancouver replaces the structure with a new boardwalk. Built by volunteers in the 1990s, the original boardwalk is the end of its operational life, according to the regional district. Metro’s John McEwan told the Optimist the current boardwalk is in a deteriorating condition and is no longer up to safety and accessibility standards, so an entirely new 2.3-kilometre structure will be built which will be raised in the event of flooding. “A lot of people may not realize the bog is a key component of the region and it’s been described as the lungs of the Lower Mainland. It’s a multi-million-dollar project and we’re excited about it and
excited to be able to get more people into the bog and understand its ecological importance,” he said. To eventually connect to Metro’s future South Surrey Regional Greenway project, the new boardwalk will also have several areas that will serve as viewing spots with seating and information about the bog. The first phase of the project is to address hazard tree mitigations and wildfire fuel management to ensure the area is safe for upcoming construction and future public use. About 350 dead and dying trees have been identified for removal and a further 150 trees will be reduced in height. The nature reserve is a dynamic ecosystem where changing hydrology and storm events have caused some trees mortality near the existing boardwalk, a Metro report explains, adding that active management to mitigate future risks to
the public, park infrastructure and ecosystems is required. Now out for tender, the plan is to undertake the tree removal starting in January 2026 with the opening of the new boardwalk to be held in the spring of 2027. Existing benches that had commemorative plaques will also be removed. McEwan noted they will reach out to families to see how they would like to commemorate their loved ones in the future. Five years ago, the province, federal government and city announced the opening to the public of approximately 170 metres of a west section of the outer boardwalk loop, which was rebuilt and raised to minimize risk of flooding. It was a realignment of the boardwalk to make space for a new vehicle ramp connection between Hwy. 91 and the Nordel Way Interchange, part of the Hwy. 91/17 Upgrade Project.

The City of Delta has revised a plan to extend a new multiuse pathway in Tsawwassen. The city received a joint letter from the six property owners on 55A Street complaining that the proposed pathway extension is not needed or desired, outlining several concerns including potential loss
of their property values. They wanted the extension halted and a review of alternatives. Part of Delta’s Cycling Master Plan, the ongoing 56 Street Multi-Use Pathway project was a 3.5-metre-wide pathway on 56th Street between Sixth and 8A avenues, as well as a shared roadway for cyclists along 8A Avenue and 55A Street to Winskill Park. The original project scope
proposed for the pathway was to have it to extend only as far as 56th Street and 8A Avenue. Noting feedback indicated that the project received strong community support, with feedback also expressing a desire for a continuous off-road pathway to Winskill Park, a recent staff report noted a revised plan was developed extending the multi-use pathway along 8A Avenue and 55A
Southlands. The revised project scope would be within the budget and was reviewed, the report noted, adding the proposed alignment along 8A Avenue and 55A Street would be entirely within municipal road dedication, and would not require private property. A subsequent report to council notes that further engagement of the affected property owners and resi-
dents immediately fronting the proposed pathway along 8A Avenue and 55A Street was undertaken to provide answers to the issues being raised. One property owner on 55A Street still expressed concerns about loss of onsite parking, site drainage and pathway lighting. Staff developed a revised design for the extension to address the property owner’s concerns, and the change was endorsed by council. The city is to also provide traffic calming along 55A Street

and told Global TV Dec. 16 that the government is making continuous improvements but can’t be specific. Under the $1.3-billion Border Plan announced a year ago, the CBSA has spent $6.25 million for large-scale imaging (X-ray) systems, and committed another $31 million for other equipment. New detection tools will enhance ability to spot drugs and precursors at the border. Included are imaging and tracedetection tools, regional satellite labs, and handheld chemical analyzers. An additional $24 million of equipment is planned for delivery in 2026, with more in the following years. The agency uses canine teams, large and small X-ray machines and handheld devices in searching for drugs on the waterfront. Harvie wants CBSA’s upgrades in port security technology to be explained. CBSA though says it can’t confirm the techniques used at specific locations for security reasons.

While the federal government maintains it’s boosting security at B.C. ports, Delta Mayor George Harvie is still waiting to see a particular sign of it. So far, there is no indication that large scanners, which container trucks can drive through, have reached Deltaport, Harvie said. “From what I’m hearing, there is no such thing as rolling scanners. So I won’t be happy until I hear a percentage, that is way above three percent containers being examined, which is close to what it is now,” he said Thursday. Harvie said he knows there’s been some improvement to Canada Border Services Agency equipment but hasn’t seen rolling scanners as used in Europe. “It’s not that I haven’t been asking,” he said, adding he’s relying on Delta MP Jill McKnight for updates. Opening up our hearts this Christmas

T
he Christmas and holiday season can be a busy and hectic time for many of us. Final year-end commitments at work, preparing for the end of school for a few weeks for your children, and connecting with friends and family for the holidays can lead to added stress. It can also be a time filled with joy and happiness as we celebrate, but it can also be a tough time for many in our community. This year has been a financial struggle for many. Ensuring that there are presents under the Christmas tree and a turkey dinner on the table on Christmas Day versus paying rent and having enough money for the essentials has been a challenge. But once again, thanks to the generosity of so many businesses, non-profit organizations, Delta schools and the community as a whole, many families will not have to face that challenge. During the past few weeks and in today’s Dec. 25 edition of the Optimist, we have highlighted many of these moments of generosity. The Delta Firefighters Charitable Society is supporting 10 wonderful organizations with its December Days of Giving Campaign. Wesgrove Homes in Ladner hosted a community toy drive and photo day with Santa that brought in $20,000 worth of all types of new toys that were dropped off to support the annual Toy Depot at Deltassist. The Toy Depot and the Christmas holiday food hamper program at Deltassist were also huge successes this year thanks to the kind hearts of so many. More than 550 families received food hampers delivered by volunteers on Saturday, Dec. 20 to ensure that there will be food on the table this Christmas. Christmas is a time of giving and sharing and South Deltans have shown the true meaning of the holiday season. In closing, the staff at the Optimist would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and all the best for this holiday season.
How Delta has strengthened community well-being
T
welve months ago, I wrote about four pieces of good news to watch for in 2025 that could meaningfully improve health and wellness in Delta. A year later, it’s heartening to report that progress has been made on every front. At Little House in Tsawwassen, recovery support groups are now fully integrated into Deltassist’s comprehensive substanceuse services. After the abrupt withdrawal of a previous provider, there was real concern about continuity of care. Today, those supports are stable, easier to find and better connected, with expanded counselling services available across Delta. For young people, the Youth Hub model has moved from concept to reality. At the North Delta Recreation Centre, schools, police and non-profit agencies are working together to provide welcoming, youthpositive spaces focused on mental and physical health,

skill building and social connection. Importantly, the model has expanded south, with a Youth Hub now operating at Delta Secondary. Primary care remains one of our biggest challenges, but there is welcome momentum. The recent announcement of an AfterHours Urgent and Primary Care Centre in South Delta will help relieve pressure on Delta Hospital’s emergency department and begin to address the reality that nearly one in four Ladner and Tsawwassen residents does not have a family doctor. While more work is need-
ed to recruit physicians to our community and hospital, we see that collaboration between local government, health authorities and doctors can make a real difference. There is also much to celebrate at KinVillage, which has successfully opened its expanded Day Program for Older Adults. By supporting independence, reducing isolation and easing the load on caregivers, this program is an investment in dignity, prevention and quality of life as our community ages. And finally, a small but heartwarming reminder of our caring community - at the end of the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen’s holiday event at Diefenbaker Park, Santa made a special detour to visit a 102-yearold neighbour at her home. Surrounded by family who wanted to be sure she didn’t miss out, she experienced the simple joy of a visit from Santa, proof that moments of wonder, care and connection matter at every stage of life.

This is not a public road - it’s a private, residential driveway Editor: Re: Dec. 11 letter, cyclist frustrated with 52nd Street Although I can understand Bruce Fougner’s frustrations I disagree with part of his solution.
Springs Boulevard is a private road: owned, paid for, and maintained by all the residents and businesses at Tsawwassen Springs. Essentially, it is our private residential driveway
and not a public road. I suspect that there would be very little interest by the owners to change it to a privately maintained, public thoroughfare. Ron Foreman
Your ideas will only make things worse Editor: I am writing in reply to Bruce Fougner’s letter (Dec. 11) about 52nd Street and cycling. I am a regular user of this roadway, as a commuter and as a cyclist. While I agree that the section of roadway from Springs Boulevard to the highway could have been better planned and should have included dedicated bike lanes in both directions, the idea
of two lanes southbound from the highway to 12th Avenue, while practical for traffic, does not respect the residential nature of the more southerly sections. Relegating cyclists to ride through Imperial Village and through the park to 53A - a street prone to dangerous, speeding vehicles, more driveways and future townhouses, is an idea that should be quickly
dismissed. Likewise, the idea of providing a through-route from Tsawwassen Springs to Hwy. 17 would almost certainly subject that minor roadway to increased flows of traffic of residents short-cutting to and from the mall. No, the current situation is not ideal, but these ideas would only serve to make things worse. Hemlock Raseff

The City of Delta is commissioning two Coast Salish welcome poles from Indigenous artists to be installed at Delta municipal hall. A Coast Salish welcome pole is a tall, intricately carved wooden structure traditionally placed at the entrance of villages or gathering areas. The pole welcomes guests, bringing awareness and honouring the land it stands. Tsawwassen First Nation members Bryce Williams and Karl Morgan will collaborate to carve one of the poles, with Musqueam Indian Band member Thomas Cannell creating the second. The artists will design and create the poles over the next several months, with the finished structures set to be installed in mid-2026, the city says, adding that the poles will serve as a powerful symbol of Delta’s commitment to reconciliation and will be featured prominently at city hall’s entrance. Williams and Morgan said they are glad to be part of the project and the relationship building that it represents, while

Translink offering free transit on New Year’s Eve TransLink is offering free transit for all services across Metro Vancouver this New Year’s Eve, from 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 31 until 5 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 1. During these hours, fare gates at SkyTrain and SeaBus stations will remain open. Customers will not be required to tap their Compass Cards or use other payment methods on all modes of transit. The Delta Firefighters Charitable Society (DFCS) has been giving back to the community, which it proudly serves, this December. Through its December Days of Giving campaign, $65,000 has been presented to 10 different organizations. The following charities received $7,500: BC Guide Dogs Heron Hospice Society
Reach Child & Youth Development Society Gift of Speech Campaign Pony Pals Therapeutic Riding Association Deltassist Volunteer Cancer Driver’s Society. The South Delta Food Bank and Guru Nanak Food Bank in North Delta each received $5,000. Be the Light Society received $5,000, which will offer scholarships in support of South Asian women from Delta, pur-
suing post secondary education. In total, $5,000 worth of gift cards for a Ladner grocery store were purchased and donated by the Charitable Society to be included in 25 Christmas hampers supporting Delta Secondary students and their families during the holidays. The December Days of Giving first launched in 2021. Since then, the DFCS has donated more than $300,000 to a range of
Delta charitable organizations. These funds are raised during the year at the society’s fundraising barbecue at the Boundary Bay Airshow, their annual golf tournament in September, and their annual Boot Drive in October. For the 2024 campaign, $63,400 was donated. “This is the fifth year of our December Days of Giving campaign and we are very proud to support so many
important charities,” said DFCS president Daryl McMillan. “The DFCS fundraises locally and we are committed to giving back to Delta citizens.” DFCS secretary Kristy Storey added that they can see firsthand the positive impact these donations can have for individuals and families, especially around the holiday season. “As firefighters, we are fortunate to have so much support from Delta residents when we
fundraise,” she said. “It is a tremendous source of pride for us - that people put their trust in us on and off the job. “Despite a lot of economic uncertainty, we had a very successful fundraising year and we are now thrilled to give back through the December Days of Giving. We know that the charities we’ve selected as beneficiaries, will truly help Delta residents and hopefully make their lives better.”

Santa and his elves are busy at the North Pole making presents and loading Santa’s sleigh in preparation for the big night. The display features approximately 5,000 lights and a variety of handmade decorations. The display will be lit from 5 to 11 p.m. every night until Jan. 4.

We’ve had so many people compliment our display that it just seemed
right to send something along to you. We are also very happy to live directly across the street from a nice couple who have decked their home our in a great display, too. Also, many of our neighbours have caught the Christmas lighting bug. As a result, our street seems to be one that should not be missed. We add a little more every year and enjoy not only decorating and the way it looks but having a great display for everyone to enjoy. Merry Christmas! Our inspiration is our love of Christmas and the joy and smiles the lights and decor bring to little kids and to our neighborhood. It’s a perfect spot for a nice evening stroll enjoying some hot chocolate or perhaps capturing some family photos. It takes a few weeks of planning and effort to get all the lights up. We have over 10,000 lights now and keep adding a little more every year. The lights are synchronized to Christmas music and a few additions this year
are the shimmering curtain lights, inflatables, reindeers, elves and stars which are used to symbolize the Star of Bethlehem that led the three wisemen to the manger where Jesus was born. These shimmering beacons of illumination have long been a symbol of hope, joy, and enlightenment. Delta Secondary’s 20 Days of Giving brings holiday cheer to local families Delta Secondary students excelled at their aim of positively impacting others this holiday season with the school’s 20 Days of Giving Campaign. This year, the campaign gathered enough items to create multiple holiday hampers filled with food, clothing, toiletries and gift cards. Local organizations such as the Delta Firefighters Charitable Society, DYSL – Delta Youth Support Link, Queen Elizabeth Lions Club and the Rotary Club of Ladner made generous contributions, and the company Wallenius Wilhelmsen Lines also donated, helping ensure the campaign’s success. Some individuals in the community also went above and beyond by “adopting” a family, providing personalized support. “As co–Prime Ministers of Student Government, we view 20 Days of Giving as a meaningful initiative that unites
our community,” said Valeska MunroWilliams and Allison Puthanangadi. “Seeing students contribute through donations and volunteer efforts displays its importance. Community partnership helps make Christmas brighter for seniors Residents of Delta View thanks community for support A community partnership once again means a Christmas filled with gifts and joy for the seniors at Good Samaritan Delta View Care Centre. For the third year in a row Delta View partnered with London Drugs and the Seniors Stocking Stuffer program in Ladner. Since announcing the partnership at the home and with London Drugs, the community has generously come through purchasing gifts for the residents of Delta View. “We converted an entire unit into Santas workshop to store and wrap all the gifts for the big day. We would like to thank the communities and businesses of Delta and Ladner who have contributed to this massive undertaking of generosity,” said recreation coordinator Mike Fenn “One special moment so far was when Sandy M asked Santa for a laptop, and a kind resident of Ladner granted this gift to make her Christmas a truly special one. Thank you to the incredible community support of the residents and business in Delta/Ladner and the store manager at London Drugs for supporting the seniors stocking stuff for residents here at Delta View.” -Submitted

The Night Before Christmas Twas the night before Christmas and all through the store The prices were lowered like never before. The sew foam was waiting for just the right home While vinyls and leather were matched for their tone. Tack hammers and pliers were stacked on the shelf With hopes that some trimmer would buy for himself. The roll goods were lined up like little tin men As I walked by so slowly I turned down the bend. I turned very slowly craning by head I saw what I wanted A vinyl in red! I knew it was Christmas tops weren’t in style But springtime would be here in just a short while. I am always impressed
with Nelson’s service and price And I thought of his crew who are always so nice. I think that I’ll call them that old Nelson crew And place one last order Yes, that’s what I’ll do. As I hung up the phone I heard such a chatter I went straight outside to see what was the matter. And what to my wondering eyes should appear But Rob Nelson himself and eight tiny reindeer!

How nutritional needs change with age The human body undergoes an assortment of changes over the course of a lifetime. Some of those changes are visible to the naked eye, but many more are not. The body’s changing needs in regard to nutrition is one alteration that people cannot see. A nutritious diet can be a building block of a long and healthy life. Nutritional needs change as the body ages, and recognition of those changes can help people rest easy that their diets are working in their favor and not to their detriment.
Calorie needs The body requires fewer calories as individuals reach adulthood. That’s because muscle mass begins to decrease in adulthood while fat increases. The National Institutes of Health notes that muscles use more calories than fat throughout the day, so it makes sense that a body experiencing a decline in muscle mass will require less calories than one in which muscle mass is on the rise. No two individuals are the same, and some adults exercise more than others. So it’s best for adults to consult their physician to discuss
their own calorie needs and then adjust their diets based on such discussions. What to eat Aging adults’ calories should come from nutrient-dense foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean meat, and low-fat dairy. This recommendation aligns with adults’ declining calorie needs, as nutrient-dense foods contain ample amounts of protein, vitamins and/or minerals but do not contain a lot of calories. Water needs It’s vital for aging adults to make a concerted effort to drink water
each day. Aging adults who are unaware of that unique biological reality may be risking dehydration because they are not compelled to drink water throughout the day. Dehydration can contribute to dizziness, weakness and lightheadedness, among other symptoms. Those symptoms can be particularly menacing for older adults, who are at increased risk for potentially harmful falls even if they are not dehydrated. The body still needs water as it ages, and seniors taking certain medications may need more than usual
Reach out to a senior this holiday season The holiday season is meant to be a time of togetherness and celebration but many seniors report feeling lonely and isolated this time of year. BC Seniors Advocate Dan Levitt is calling on all British Columbians to reach out to older adults in their communities who may be alone over the holidays, whether they are close friends and family, or a neighbour or acquaintance. “Many seniors spend the
holidays by themselves and a small, caring gesture can make a big difference for both the giver and the receiver,” says Levitt. “A simple phone call or a visit can remind someone they are not forgotten.” He encourages people to take simple, practical steps to connect with seniors: Make a phone or video call, just to check in. Invite a senior for a walk, coffee or a brief visit.
Offer to assist with simple tasks, like getting groceries, clearing the driveway, or giving a ride. Contact care homes to ask about visiting. Many residents appreciate short, friendly visits during the holidays. The Seniors Advocate also encourages older adults who are feeling lonely or isolated to consider engaging with their community. “Reaching out can feel diffi-

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE What seniors can do to safeguard their mental health Mental health has increasingly been noted as a key ingredient to an individual health regimen. The stigma once assigned to mental health issues has largely dissipated, and many people now recognize that mental health should be just as big a priority as physical health. Seniors may not have come of age in a world where mental health was prioritized, and thanks to that aging men and women may not recognize where their mental health is suffering and what they can do to combat such problems. Recognition of the importance of mental health is a step in the right direction, and seniors also can consider these strategies to safeguard their mental health. Recognize your vulnerability: The World Health Organization notes older adults are uniquely vulnerable to potential mental health issues. That’s because mental health is shaped by
numerous variables, including earlier life experiences and some notable stressors related to aging, such as a decline in functional ability that can cause psychological distress. Seniors also are more likely than others to experience adverse events like the loss of a loved one or even a loss of purpose, which can affect anyone upon retirement. Recognition of this vulnerability may be enough to compel seniors to seek advice and assistance on how to safeguard their mental health from agerelated stressors. Take time out if you’re a caregiver: The WHO notes that many older adults serve as caregivers for spouses with chronic health conditions, including dementia. Studies have found that 70 percent of caregivers report feeling stress related to coordination of care, while two in three caregivers have difficulty finding resources and support for their needs. Seniors who have taken on caregiving duties for a loved one must
protect their own mental health by taking time out to care for themselves as well. Work with family members to share responsibilities when caring for a loved one. If family members cannot pitch in, then work with local government agencies to alleviate some of the stress of caregiving. Make a concerted effort to socialize: A 2025 report from the WHO indicated that roughly one-fourth of all older adults are affected by social isolation and loneliness. Social connection can significantly improve mental health and provide a sense of life satisfaction while improving quality of life. Seniors are urged to prioritize socialization. Many community-based groups, including government offices, run programs designed specifically to facilitate socialization among older residents. Take advantage of such programs whenever possible. Seniors living alone also may want to consider relocating to communities exclusive to people
