The nasty infighting among the Achieving for Delta slate oncity council has gone public againafter several councillors were notified they are not welcome to run againonthe slate inthe2026 municipalelection.
In a letter datedDec. 2, with theelectoralorganization’s letterhead and signed by the group’sDon Sangster, council members Dylan Kruger, Dan Boisvert, Jennifer Johal and Rod Binder were served notice “the Achieving ForDeltaorganization willnot be endorsing you to run as Achieving ForDelta candidatesinthe upcoming civicelection.”
The letter also states, “Furtherthat you cease inany representationsas being associated with our organization, inthepresent orthe future, forthe purpose offundraising, campaigning or general personal promotion, asofthe date ofthisnotice.”
Coun.Alicia Guichon, a two-term councilmember also on the slate that sweptall the council seats inthe2022civic election, was notmentioned.

Neither was Coun. Jessie Dosanjh.
Mayor George Harvie, who hada publicfalling out with

thefourcouncillors, isalso not brought upintheletter.
A response statement by thefour said, “It isdisappoint-
ing that Mayor George Harvie chose to remove usfromthe Achieving for Delta teamvia email today. Thisunilateral

decisionisaimed at silencing voicesthathave raised concerns about the mayor’s patternof reckless spending and increasingly erraticdecisionmaking.”
The statement also notes, “Delta residentsdeser ve a councilthat collaborateseffectively.
“Our goal has always been to work together, engage inopen debates, and respect differing opinions Unfortunately, the mayor seemsmore focused on exerting control.”
The statement also notes that, in2024,most ofcouncil voted to remove Harvieas chairof Metro Vancouver, but prior to his removal, Harvie spent over$47,000ontaxpayer-funded first-class trips to citiesaroundthe world, which has previously been reported on by the Optimist and Lodestar Media.
“Thisdecision was the right choicefortaxpayers,” the statement notes, adding, “Moving for ward, we will continue to put Delta residentsfirst, holdthe mayor to account, and pushforgreater transparenc y andaccountability at city hall.”

John Rustad’s long-soughtresignation last Thursday as BC Conser vative leader markstheendofoneofthe strangest chapters in modernBritish Columbia politics, definedlessbycoherentconservativerenewalthan by the chaoticnarrowingofaparty’s purpose.
Rustad, you will remember, wasbooted fromthe BC United Partythree yearsago and inherited afringevehicle —the largelyidled BC Conser vatives —that suddenlyfound itself with oxygen, pollingstrengthand real strategicopportunity. Part of it washim.Part of it wasPierre Poilievre’scoattail. Part of it wasthe BC NDP’s follies.Rustad even gotthe last laughonthe partythat dispatched him, in dispatchingthemduringlastyear’selection campaign.
Thedispatcher is againthe dispatched,so closelastyeartothepremier ’s joband so far todayfromit. Hisfull-circlejourneyreturns him to the ratherforlornML Arolehenot so longagooccupied.
He leaves behind amovementthatsquandered its opening, exhausted itsrelevance andcosttheprovince somethingithasnot hadinmorethana decade: acredible, modern,centre-right alternativecapableof challenginggovernmentonthe issues thatmattermost.
Politicalleadership is not just aboutmessage, but aboutallocating attention. And Rustadconsistently allocateditpoorly.

John Rustad,steppeddownasleaderof theBCConservatives lastThursday.
lost afunctioning opposition at theprecise momentwhenone wasmostneeded.
B.C.’s political system relies heavily on competitive pressure to keep governments responsive, innovative andtransparent.
Rustad’s leadershipblunted that. His Conser vativespushedthemselves into cornersthatabsorbedattention butyieldedno policyarchitecture, noinstitutionalability andno realistic path to governing. They gotlouder at the expenseofgetting smarter.

At atime whenBritish Columbians were clamouringfor relieffromsoaring housing costs,spirallinghealth-care delays, infrastructure shortfallsand apublic safetysystemstrugglingto keep upwith mentalhealthand addiction crises,Rustad chosetosteer his partyinto thinnerand slimmer cultural terrain.
Insteadofoutliningalternativehousing frameworks, he fixatedon pronouns.Instead ofdebatingenergy transition policies orthe futureofLNG,heheldfasttorhetorical battles over climatescience.Insteadofoffering disciplinedcritique ofthe government’seconomic policies, heleanedintosocialmedia algorithmsandgrievance politics.
Thecostofall this is not just that Rustad became anichefigure, butthattheprovince
Theparadoxof Rustad’s tenure was short-term visibility at theexpenseof long-termviability. Effective opposition requirespolicy, disciplineand a breadthof appeal.Rustadoffered outrage, incoherenceand ashrinking base.Under his watch, the party’sinternal culturetilted ever furtherfromdialogueand toward agitational purity, weigheddownbythe politics of saying noloudly, ratherthanoffering acompelling yes.
Theconsequences will echofor years. In failingtomodernizethe partyorbroaden its tent, healso botchedtheconditionsfor aunifiednon-NDPcoalition.
It is possible nowtoanticipatethree splinteredparties —OneBC, CentreBC andthe Conser vatives—jockeying for turf asthe BC NDP sitbackand watchthe tirefire.
ItbelongsinRustad’spoliticalobituar ythat hepresided overthefragmentationofthe right-of-centrevoteatthe very momentwhen
it could have consolidated.Theelectorate wasleft tochoose betweenagoverningparty mismanagingmultiple crisesandanopposition that toooften seemeduninterestedin discussingthem seriously
Forbusiness, civic planners, Indigenous nationsand cities, the lack of aplausible and functioningalternativemeant fewer checks on majordecisions,fromland-usereformto infrastructureprioritization to taxpolicy.
Whenopposition parties abandonthe hard policyfiles, governmentslosethe motive to refine their own. Rustad maynot have intendedit, buthis leadership createdavacuum in theprovince’s policyconversation. Into that vacuumdrifted aprovincial governmentfreetodefineits agenda withoutthe friction, scrutinyorelectoralcompetitiveness that sharpenspublic policy.
Rustad’s defenderswill arguethathespoke for voters whofelt ignored by establishment politics.Thereistruth in that. But speaking forfrustration is notthesameas channelling itinto constructivepoliticalforce.Leadership is not amegaphone, buta translation tool. It takesunrest andturnsitintoagenda. Rustad succeeded at thefirst taskand abandoned the second.
Hisresignationcloses achapter, butthe damagepersists. The BC Conser vatives under Rustad became aparty moreinterestedinsymboliccombatthanmaterial improvement.
B.C. needed anopposition readytointerrogate, propose andholdaccountable. Rustad gave themanopposition readyonly to provoke.
He leaves B.C. without aviableconser vativealternativeandleaves his partywith a brandofpolitics that excitesthefewand exhausts ever yoneelse.
In wavinggoodbyeThursday viapress release, Rustad indicated hisousterwasnot acapital-L Liberaltakeover, as if that would soothethe party’ssouls.Evenhemustknow by nowthatintegratingelementsof amore centristplaybookisnecessary if the partyhas anychancenextelection.

Re: Feds, fund energy research project in Delta (Optimist, Nov. 27)
ADelta-based company is receiving $1.4millioninfederalfunding for a research anddevelopment project. I find thetiming very interesting.
According to the Optimist story, this collaborationisfundamentalincreatinga pathway tosignificantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissionsofthe transportationindustry, whileproviding anaffordable demand solutionfor the hydrogen sector to scale.
Two questions : Why isallthismoney
put into reducing greenhouse gases by thetransportationindustr y when our controversial primeminister has just OK’d anoilpipeline to pump andcreate more oil forlocal and international consumption?
Needless to say, that would produce an ever-increasing amountofgreenhouse gases, would itnot?
I’m very curious where the supply of the hydrogen islocated ordo we have to develop a hydrogen industr y to supply the new, improved transportation industry’senvironmental status?

The following letter was sent to Delta MP Jill McKnight and copied to the Delta Optimist.
Asoneof your constituents,I must express my dismay onlearning of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Memorandum of Understanding withAlberta’s Premier Danielle Smith, negotiated withnoinvolvement from B.C., behind our backs.
A bitumen pipeline across northern B.C. remainsanunacceptable risk Please note that :
• Thisproject has been proposed inthe past and soundly rejected forfar too many good reasons
• Thisproposalflouts the rightsof Coastal First Nationsandviolates the spiritofUNDRIP and free, prior, andinformed consent.
• Thisproposal would modifyor even lifttheoil tanker ban innorthcoast waters, exposing our coast to the catastrophic risk of a worse-than-Exxon-Valdez spillof heavy bitumen inthehighly likely event ofanaccident in Canada’s most dangerous waters, Hecate Strait.I joinBritish Columbians, provincewide, andoppose any attempt to carve out exceptions to Canada’s tanker ban.
• The proposed pipelineis redundant. The new TMX pipeline currently serves demand at less thanthree quarters ofits capacity. What actual demand existsfor a northern pipeline?
• Expansionof raw resource exportsforadded-valueprocessingoutsideof Canada removes Canadian capacity to apply our own addedvalue As my MP,I expect you to oppose any new pipelineproposal to thenorthcoast, even to the point of joining MP Steven Guilbeault inplacing your cabinet positionontheline

Christmasmeans many thingstoeachof us :atimeoffamilygatherings, dinner parties, lights, presents, and way toomuchfood!
Tackysweatersand a jolly, beardedman in a redsuit, certainlyadd charmand humour to the season
Ourfamily’s traditions includelisteningto Anne Murray’s Christmas Wishesand twoorthree viewingsofAlistairSim’s 1951 portrayalinA ChristmasCarol.
Decemberisalsoa bittersweetmonthas we consider those less fortunate and perhaps
rememberthosewe’ve lovedandlost.
It is quitepurposeful to pauseandconsidersupportingthose amongst usexperiencingpractical and emotionalneeds. Notjustoncea year, but Christmascan become the catalystfor such yearroundcompassion.
Christmasshouldalso propelus to considerour spiritualneeds.
Most ofusdon’tneed another roundofpresents,but perhapssomethingmore.
