Harvie wants to withdraw Delta from nonessential Metro Van programs IAN JACQUES

Mayor George Harvie wants Delta out of nonessential Metro Vancouver programs.

If re-elected in October’s municipal election, Harvie, who is running under the Achieving for Delta Team said this policy announcement follows the recent passage of a motion intended to reduce the number of members serving on the Metro Vancouver board of directors - a motion that still requires provincial approval before implementation.

“The motion addresses a symptom of the regional government’s challenges rather than the underlying issues and, on its own, will not deliver any meaningful change,” he said in a news release issued Aug. 4.

Harvie said the fundamental issue is that Metro Vancouver has expanded beyond its original core responsibilities while becoming increasingly costly and less accountable to taxpayers over the last 30 years.

“Reducing the number of directors around the boardroom table will not solve the real problem,” said Harvie. “Metro Vancouver has moved far beyond the essential regional services it was created to provide.”

Harvie said Metro Vancouver’s expansion into areas such as climate programming, air-quality initiatives, and social housing, has contributed to a larger bureaucracy, increased operating costs, and additional financial pressure on municipalities and taxpayers.

He said administrative and departmental costs associated with these expanded programs have increased significantly, particularly between 2024 and 2026, without delivering measurable outcomes for residents across the region.

financial controls, and clearer accountability to taxpayers.

“Delta will continue working with neighboring communities to protect the essential regional systems we all rely on,” said Harvie. “However, we will not continue supporting unchecked mandate expansion, increasing administrative costs, or decisions that do not provide value and accountability for taxpayers like what happened this year when board members were paid $500 to attend a five-minute meeting, including Coun. Kruger. I was disappointed with the involved board members not forcing staff to find an alternative way to have the report considered.”

But the other two mayoralty candidates in Delta are calling Harvie out for this policy announcement.

One Delta’s Dylan Kruger said the problems at Metro Vancouver can’t be solved by re-electing the person who helped create them.

“George Harvie had nearly three decades in positions of influence to fix Metro Vancouver. Instead of delivering results, he left taxpayers with higher costs, more bureaucracy, and less accountability, all while enjoying international business-class travel on the public dime,” said Kruger. “Our One Delta team is taking a different approach. We fought to ban international travel for Metro Vancouver directors, eliminate wasteful spending, reduce the size of the board, and strengthen accountability.

“It’s time to move forward. Delta deserves a mayor who will stand up for taxpayers, demand accountability, and bring Metro Vancouver back to basics.”

Melissa Granum running for Delta First said the challenges at Metro Vancouver stem from years of ineffective governance.

“These systemic issues cannot be solved with symbolic pledges, simply reducing the board size, or by suggesting Delta withdraw from ‘non-essential’ services,” she said. “Metro Vancouver manages regional utilities and infrastructure, parks, housing, and longterm planning that no single municipality can effectively deliver on its own. The question isn’t whether Metro Vancouver should exist, it’s whether it is being governed effectively. Right now, I do not believe that it is.

“An independent governance review by Deloitte identified systemic issues in May of last year, but meaningful structural reform has been extremely limited. The only way to hold Metro Vancouver accountable is through our own local government elections and the eight-year track record of our current representatives proves the need for change.”

Youth advocacy group forms ahead of municipal election RADHA AGARWAL

A newly formed youth advocacy organization is aiming to change the landscape of British Columbia’s municipal elections by backing local candidates who prioritize the needs of young voters.

Young British Columbians for Better Governance is a non-profit that recently launched a two-year plan to increase youth voter registration, recruit campaign volunteers and develop practical policy solutions.

Edward Yuan, VP of the society, explains that while federal and provincial politics often dominate the conversation, the group believes local government has a very immediate impact on daily life.

“The issues young people raise — including housing, affordability, transportation, employment, climate resilience, recreation and access to services — are directly connected to decisions made by local and provincial governments,” Yuan added. “Young British Columbians should be ongoing partners in making those decisions.”

Yuan helped start the initiative alongside president Jonah van Driesum and some peers who recognized that young people are a powerful voting block federally but remain largely disengaged at the municipal

level.

In Delta, the group has officially endorsed Dylan Kruger for mayor, citing a shared vision for smart planning and regional infrastructure.

This decision also considers the candidate’s willingness to be ongoing partners and consult with young people in the future, says the group.

Yuan pointed out that delaying major infrastructure projects previously created bottlenecks later.

He noted that if the region had started building a new tunnel a decade ago, the project would already be completed and generating economic growth rather than just getting started today.

A major concern for youth in Delta is geographic isolation and poor transit connectivity between North Delta, Ladner and Tsawwassen.

Yuan explained that the lack of reliable internal transit forces many young residents to leave the community to socialize.

“I like staying local,” Yuan said. “But it can be a little bit difficult, admittedly, for trying to plan things out with friends.”

He says it’s tough for people in North Delta, Ladner, and Tsawwassen to get together without a car.

As a master’s student in public policy and global affairs at the University of British Columbia, Yuan

spends roughly two hours each way transiting from Delta.

Housing affordability is also a serious issue for the group.

Yuan noted some of his peers live at home out of financial necessity rather than a lifestyle choice.

Without affordable housing or reliable transit to keep them connected, young people in Delta are finding their social lives restricted and their ability to build an independent future severely compromised.

“We want people to be able to see themselves having a future here, building a life,” he said.

The society has also announced a growing list of endorsements across the province, throwing its support behind candidates like Surrey councillor William Li, Maple Ridge mayor Dan Ruimy, Langley Township councillor Shumail Javed, Saanich councillors Susan Brice and Harjas Singh Popli, and Parksville mayor Sean Wood, among others.

Following the fall elections, the society plans to shift its focus toward fundraising and localized policy research.

Yuan emphasized that they intend to track where donations originate to ensure funds raised in Delta go toward investigating issues specific to the municipality, rather than subsidizing research for larger cities.

Illegal dumping a problem in Delta SANDOR GYARMATI

The City of Delta is asking residents to report illegal dumping.

The city notes that, each year, illegal dumping costs thousands of dollars in remediation.

In 2025 the city attended 655 dump sites, including at rural roads, ravines and other green spaces, pulling crews and resources away from other services.

Delta residents take pride in their community, the city notes, however, some of what’s left behind is hazardous, such as drywall and other building materials, which can require specialized handling and disposal.

The city is also asking residents to help by reporting those trying to dump their waste.

“If you witness dumping, your report can help us identify those responsible. Dashcam footage is often especially useful. Please don’t approach anyone in the act of dumping,” the city notes.

Fines can be up to $500.

Crews and bylaw staff monitor known problem areas and investigate all reports, according to the city, adding there are a variety of options for residents to dispose of items conveniently, and often for free.

The city also notes that to learn more about illegal dumping, find legal ways to dispose of waste or report

illegal dump sites quickly, check delta.ca/illegaldumping.

Metro wants to ‘amplify’ its efforts Metro Vancouver has come up with a final draft of an updated Solid Waste Management Plan which notes that litter and illegal dumping not only impact the environment and wildlife but also result in significant costs for member jurisdictions to collect and dispose of the materials.

Efforts to prevent litter and illegal dumping are already underway, but Metro Vancouver and its members can amplify these efforts through continued collaboration and the actions listed under the revised strategy, the document notes.

Among the proposed actions is enhancing litter and illegal dumping data to identify opportunities to recycle commonly littered or illegally dumped materials, as well as reviewing approaches in other jurisdictions to reduce illegal dumping.

Another proposed action is to increase the number of community drop-off events to provide options for large or difficult to manage materials and prioritize diversion over disposal.

The draft plan has been endorsed by the Greater Vancouver Sewerage and Drainage District’s board and will be provided to the provincial Minister of Environment and Parks for approval.

Delta police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding a series motor-vehicle collision on Ladner Trunk Road last Saturday night (Aug. 8).

The collision, which involved an electric motorbike and another vehicle, closed Ladner Trunk Road for several hours.

First responders arrived at the collision site in the 10400 block of Ladner Trunk Road at approximately 5 p.m.

Media relations officer A/Insp. Joel Thirsk told the Optimist Monday morn-

ing that the 26-year-old male driver of the electric motorbike, was travelling eastbound on Ladner Trunk Road (where it bends northsouth) at 104 Street.

The injured driver was transported to hospital in critical condition with life-threatening injuries, but Thirsk said the injured male is now in stable condition and is expected to be released from hospital following surgery.

His injuries are now considered nonlife threatening, said Thirsk.

Alcohol and speed have not been ruled out as contributing factors in this collision. The incident is still under investigation.

Elections BC concludes investigation into Achieving for Delta candidate No penalties laid against Jennyfer Cassar IAN JACQUES

Elections BC has concluded an investigation into Achieving for Delta council candidate Jennyfer Cassar.

After receiving correspondence from several Delta residents regarding allegations of the inappropriate use of Facebook business advertising

by Cassar, the Optimist reached out to Elections BC asking whether there was an investigation into the allegations.

Via phone and email, Elections BC Communications told the Optimist that complaints were received and investigated.

“Our team has worked to bring the candidate back into compliance and our team has provided education about the rules to the candidate,” said Elections BC. “There is no open investigation at this time.”

Elections BC also said that no administrative monetary penalties were issued.

When asked for comment, Cassar provided a statement via email to the Optimist.

“I can confirm that Elections BC contacted me,” said Cassar. “The content and context of the advertisement were aligned with Elections BC regulations. At their request, a minor administrative revision needed to be made in order for the ad to continue running. No infractions or penalties were issued.

“Elections BC was very helpful, provided clear guidance, and the matter is now fully resolved.”

any people in Delta have no respect for the environment or the community in which they live in.

Illegal dumping continues to be rampant in our community, so much so in fact, that the City of Delta is stepping up actions to curb the practice.

Late last week, the city issued a notice on its Facebook page asking for help from residents to report any cases of illegal dumping.

The post also included some telling pictures of piles and piles of garbage strewn about our parks and trails.

The city says that each year, illegal dumping costs thousands of dollars in remediation efforts and that’s thousands of dollars that hits the pocket books of all of us as taxpayers.

Further to that, the city attended some 655 dump sites in 2025 - including rural roads, ravines and other popular green spaces and trails.

And that’s just the 655 dump sites that were reported to city officials. I’m sure there are lots more that go unreported.

This year alone, I estimate that we have written at least a half dozen stories and or printed letters or commentary on illegal dumping. That also includes our beaches and recreation areas.

Delta residents take pride in their community, but when it comes to these illegal dumping practices, you have to wonder about that.

Now, you also have to take into account that some of these cases of illegal dumping are also being done by non-Delta residents and people from outside the community, but no matter who is doing it, the practice is a blight on our community and costs all of us thousands of dollars.

So, if you see someone illegally dumping garbage or come across a dumping site, contact the City of Delta. The city says fines can be issued up to $500 for those who are caught and held responsible.

We are not immune to a fire storm

I

f you watched the Bald Range wildfire crest over Cartwright Mountain above Summerland on Friday night, you were horrified like me.

In just 30 minutes 1,000 hectares of forest was on fire and spreading. The fire moved with such force it’s a miracle that only one person died escaping the flames.

It’s tragic how many families have lost their homes this summer in the B.C. interior, some people escaping with nothing other than the clothes on their backs.

Sitting in the comfort of our suburban west coast homes we prefer to believe that we are immune from a wildfire, but we are not.

Imagine what it would be like to have a home you love, a garden you’ve nurtured, animals you’ve raised all gone in a heartbeat?

tion, yet it’s happening more frequently to our neighbours near and far. We are not exempt from the trauma of wildfire.

Since 2017 the Lower Mainland has had more frequent hot and dry summers and fires natural or human caused have popped up on the edge of urban areas.

While we don’t live near wilderness we do live near urban forests, parks and farmland which are fire

prone landscapes with tinder dry conditions.

Our beautiful beaches are danger zones too as people ignore beach fire bans.

In mid July remnants of a bonfire beside the Boundary Bay Dyke trail turned into a wildfire that was thankfully quickly extinguished by the Delta Fire Department.

What if it had jumped the dike, nearby homes could have caught on fire?

What kind of insanity is it to think it’s okay to light a fire in drought conditions in the middle of summer, yet people think they can outsmart Mother Nature.

Rapid population growth has caused landscape changes that are altering our eco systems and it’s up to us to adapt to nature’s new rhythms.

Keep our community safe by being fire smart because this is the new normal, whether we like it or not.

Now is the time to ask questions

Editor: As a Delta resident, I believe it is important that our community fully understand the implications of the proposed West Coast Oil Pipeline Project before decisions are made.

The Alberta government has submitted a proposal for a pipeline capable of transporting one million barrels of crude oil per day to a new marine export facility at Roberts Bank. The federal government is now considering whether this project should be designated as a project of national interest.

The proponents have presented a case based on energy security, jobs, Indigenous economic participation, and access to global markets. These are important considerations. However, projects of this scale must also

carefully consider the communities and ecosystems where they will be located.

Roberts Bank is already a heavily used industrial area, with existing port operations and the proposed Roberts Bank Terminal 2 expansion. It is also part of the Fraser River estuary, a globally significant ecosystem supporting wildlife, migratory birds, fish habitat, and coastal environments.

Before this project moves forward, Delta residents deserve answers.

How will the proposed terminal affect local air quality when considered alongside existing and future port activity?

Will cumulative impacts from industrial operations, marine traffic, and tanker movements be fully assessed?

Will the facility be required to use the highest available technologies to reduce emissions and protect the surrounding environment?

If carbon capture is part of the broader argument for expanding oil infrastructure, we also need clarity about what emissions it addresses and what local impacts in Delta still require attention.

The Alberta government’s own West coast oil pipeline project submission to the Major Projects Office is publicly available, and I encourage residents to review it themselves.

This project is still in its early stages. That is precisely why now is the time for thoughtful questions, transparency, and meaningful community involvement.

South Delta should be more welcoming for cyclists

Editor: In 2022, the City of Delta received Hub Cycling’s Biggest Leap Award for its commitment to ensuring Delta elementary students learn road safety, as well as its work in developing a Cycling Master Plan. Delta was “thrilled” to receive the award.

I realize we have more community cycling routes and the much loved Barn to Beaches route but….for the long distance and commuting cyclists, our community has taken a big leap backwards.

Burns Drive was a safe way to cycle from South Delta to Panorama, South Surrey and beyond. Burns Drive has been closed for two years with no information if, or when it will reopen.

The Millennium Trail connection to

the bike shuttle, Deas Island Park and River Road….closed!

In the past, Ladner and Tsawwassen were popular destinations for several cycling clubs. The sunshine, the great number of coffee/lunch stops, the weekend markets and BC Ferries Terminal are just a few reasons why South Delta was a popular place to ride.

Construction debris on road shoulders, no “Share the Road” signs on alternate routes and outdated and incorrect closure signs makes South Delta challenging and unpleasant to ride in.

Let’s put our coffee shops and bike routes back on the map by making South Delta a welcoming place to ride a bike.

Sad to say good-bye to these beautiful trees Editor: Like a lot of Delta residents, I enjoyed Tsawwassen Sunfest held over the August long weekend.

The pancake breakfast under the trees, catching the bagpipes leading the parade, walking through the amazing car show, browsing the market and enjoying the cool shade of the beer garden with friends while the occasional softball flew

in from the slo-pitch games.

I am sad in advance that it appears the beer garden trees are scheduled for destruction to become a parking lot.

The current trees do not appear on the display boards showing the renewal project layout for the new Winskill Aquatic Centre.

It will be tragic to see those magnificent tall trees cut down and

replaced with parking lot trees. The current trees are 40-foot tall mature evergreens, listed on the city’s arborist report as fair condition and low risk.

Perhaps we will get one more year for the beer garden and pancake breakfast area before we say goodbye to a Tsawwassen tradition and that beautiful grove of trees.

Editor: Re: Arthur Drive townhouse project (Optimist, July 30) This plea to preserve Ladner’s heritage corridors reminds me of a heritage home, built in 1940, known by the local residents as the Hobbit

House and is located on King Edward between Cambie and Main in Vancouver.

The Hobbit House was put up for sale in 2017 and luckily the developer was able to blend the restoration within rezoning plans for a 20-unit town-

house complex.

I’m sure if this Vancouver developer was able to include some of this oddly built structure into his plans, then surely the historic Westholme Residence can be saved in some fashion.

Fantastic treatment at Delta Hospital ER

Editor: On Thursday, July 23/26 I ended up at the Delta Hospital ER because my Apple Watch told me my heart was beating at over 120 b.m.

I had no idea what was wrong with me, but Dr. Gilcrest explained in great detail that I had A.Fib and I am 95-years-old.

I wanted to write in with a letter to let the community know we have a wonderful team working for us at Delta Hospital as you don’t often hear good reports of emergencies.

The whole team on duty that day worked hard and quickly for me and Dr. Gilcrest gave me the best possible care.

In Matthew 17, there’s a moment when a desperate father went in search of Jesus in order to heal his son. Instead, he wound up with the disciples who discovered they didn’t really know how to help.

There’s a lot happening in this story. But part of what’s going on here is that following Jesus doesn’t work the same way as other religions.

You see, the way religion works is we obey, and we do good things in order to be accepted

by God. It’s like a conditional transaction.

Religion asks questions like: “How can I get God to help me in my business?” and then, when that doesn’t happen, religion says, “God, I did those things you said you wanted – I gave money

Religion seeks access to God to get him to do what you want. True faith gives God access to your heart so he can tell you what he wants.

In his desperation, this man turned to Jesus – seeking after religion.

But instead, Jesus found him, and he gave him so much more; he made him come alive, and set his heart on fire with love for God.

Delta Pride gears up for eighth annual picnic RADHA AGARWAL

Delta Pride is returning to Ladner with a week of local events designed to bring people together, culminating in the eighth annual Pride Picnic on Sunday, Aug. 16.

For organizers, the chance to gather and celebrate locally is more important than ever.

“It’s been a very, very difficult time for the queer and trans community,” said Delta Pride board member Christa Horita Kadach, pointing to the ongoing political challenges and rhetoric targeting LGBTQ2S+ individuals in the U.S. and Canada.

“It’s just the idea that we can have a Pride picnic in our little town, gather community together, celebrate our diversity, and just allow people space to be themselves… It is a really wonderful opportunity.”

The main event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Memorial Park.

Horita Kadach noted that the festival has grown significantly since its early days. What started out as a small group flipping hot dogs, now draws a lively crowd of more than 500 people.

“It just really shows the need and the desire that people have to gather together as a community to support, and just be able to spend time in a safe place

The stage will also feature performances by Bad Shah, Carrie Dawn, Dandy, Abb ‘Original, youth musician Elizabeth Graham, Hooman Hoops, Dayna Beck, and DJ Cuzo.

The Delta Pride Society is proudly grassroots and completely volunteer-run by board members Carol Johnson, Lydia Elder, Rebecca Robinson, Curll, and Horita Kadach.

Relying on community donations rather than large corporate sponsorships, the team has lined up a few ways for locals to get involved before the weekend.

To kick off the weekend, community members can bring their furry friends to the second annual Pride pet walk on Saturday, Aug. 15. The group will meet at the Ladner Wharf at 11 a.m. and stroll through the village, wrapping up with treats and water at Pets-N-Us. Last year, this was a beautiful affair featuring dressedup dogs and walkers blowing bubbles.

What to know about AI use in the classroom Artificial intelligence (AI) has been foremost on the minds of millions of people in recent years.

While much of the public discourse around AI has focused on the uncertainty and anxiety it has instilled in people concerned about their jobs, use of the technology in classrooms has garnered considerably less scrutiny.

That AI in the classroom has not been the central focus of public discourse should not be mistaken as a sign that academia has proven immune to the technology. In fact, educators know quite the opposite is true.

A 2024 Common Sense Media survey of more than 1,000 teenage students found that seven in 10 reported using generative AI for schoolwork. The students’ most common reason to use it was for homework help. If that surprises parents or people without school-aged students at home, then some additional information about AI use in the class-

room might be even more eye-opening.

AI has had a presence in classrooms for a long time: While the public discourse surrounding AI might only have ratcheted up over the last couple of years, the technology has had a presence on many campuses for far longer than that. Computer-aided educational systems have been used in classrooms for decades to help students in subjects including math and language. While the release of ChatGPT in late 2022 might have revolutionized and complicated the use of AI in educational settings, the popular platform did not mark the first time educators and students accessed AI-driven tools.

Many students use AI with permission from their teachers: The Common Sense Media study found that AI is not necessarily being used without the knowledge of educators. Roughly

AI has helped lots of students: Parents may be suspicious of AI tools like ChatGPT because they feel kids will employ such applications to get around doing their schoolwork by themselves, it’s important to recognize that AI has helped countless students improve their academic performance. Tools vary, but many are capable of personalizing the learning experience in much the same way effective but sometimes expensive tutors have done to help struggling students for years.

There are safeguards in place: AI detection software is not foolproof, but many educators use such programs to check the work students submit to ensure they are handing in their own work. As AI tools are tweaked and

strengthened, detection software might become an even more reliable and accurate way to check students’ work.

AI has been in classrooms for quite some time. Though parents are not wrong to question the potentially adverse effects of AI on their schoolaged children, it’s equally important to recognize the many positive effects of AI on students and educators.

How to minimize distractions during study time Digital technology may have impacted life for the better in many ways, but the same devices that educate, entertain and connect users can distract students at every turn.

Learning to turn attention away from distractions is a key to a successful study session.

Here are some ways to manage distractions while studying for academic success.

Gatekeep digital distractions: Students can move their phones entirely out of arm’s reach or into another room while studying. When studying on tablets or laptops, students can use software to disable non-academic platforms so they’re not tempted to check social media or browse the internet.

Avoid cognitive fatigue: Study blocks should be a maximum of two hours per course before switching subjects to keep the mind fresh. Trying to maintain intense concentration for hours on end often ends with attention waning and the brain seeking other stimuli.

Study during the day: People naturally get tired after dark, which means moving study times to daylight hours may lead to greater success.

Set aside a dedicated study area:

Students should establish a consistent, quiet and remote study spot that is physically separated from visual and auditory disruptions. Also, a study area should be separate from relaxation spots so the brain automatically switches to focus on the task at hand.

Advise others not to disturb: Students can establish boundaries with roommates or family members to ensure study sessions are not interrupted. Ask roommates or family members to avoid a designated study area and to silence phone notifications and alerts.

Quiet the environment: Some students prefer complete silence for studying, and can benefit from noisecanceling headphones. Others may prefer ambient noise or instrumental music to drown out background noise.

Build in breaks: Study sessions can be broken up with breaks to provide a change of scenery and also to grab snacks and beverages or make a trip to the restroom.

Minimizing distractions while studying requires students to determine what works for them in a study environment. Additional measures to reduce external stimuli also may need to be implemented.

They have many good ideas when it comes to improving the viability of agriculture in BC and also strengthening food security for the nation.

That’s what BCfresh President and CEO Steve Roosdahl told the Optimist regarding the feedback from the local farming community on the announcement by Prime Minister, Mark Carney of the launch of Canada’s first-ever National Food Security Strategy.

Backed by more than $3 billion in investments over 10 years, the strategy is aimed at breaking open the market for independent retailers, boosting domestic food

Following the

announcement, members of the Delta Farmers’ Institute met with Delta MLA Jill McKnight to get more information about

the initiative and outline ways to achieve the objectives, as well as the current challenges growers continue to face.

In an interview following a tour he took part in with media, business leaders and farmers visiting Delta’s vast agriculture lands, Roosdahl said among the major concerns for growers are increasing costs, such as packaging and fuel costs which drive up other costs including fertilizers.

“They are looking for whatever support they can get, especially when you look back at tariffs. A lot of them are on equipment that was coming in and now you had these

last-minute tariffs that came in to increase their costs. So, there seems to be no end in sight with costs going up and the downward pressure on pricing. And all those costs are upfront costs, with 90 per cent of their costs are upfront for fuel, seeds and planting,” said Roosdahl.

“We were talking about different potential things.

Are there any incentives that could come towards growers? Are there any tax incentives? Property taxes are significant. And are there any incentives to reduce tax on fuel to help the growers manage?” he asked.

presented was the possibility of helping growers improve storage of harvested crops with the newest technology to prevent loss of products sitting for too long, he said.

The federal government says among the other objectives for the food strategy is cutting red tape, as well as boosting production through the launch a new $1 billion Agri-food Project Finance Fund, establishing a $150 million Food Security Fund and creating a $100 million Collaborative Food Innovation Fund to help producers expand agrifood processing.

A community rooted in farming, food and learning

Southlands Tsawwassen is home to active farmland, orchards, gardens and agricultural programs that connect food production with community learning.

Agriculture is an active part of Southlands, from large-scale farming and seasonal growing fields to orchards, pollinator habitats and community learning programs.

The community includes a 275-acre publicly owned working farm operated

by Kelly Farms, along with more than 40 additional acres of working farmland made up of seasonal growing fields, orchards and smaller agricultural areas.

Snow Farms Ltd. farms part of the land, with produce sold through Southlands Farmers Markets. Hops are also grown on site, while apples from the orchard are made into cider at Four Winds Beach House & Brewery.

Alongside this active farming, Southlands is expanding opportunities for people to learn about food, agriculture and the natural systems that support them.

The Bee Place, its pollinating field and Southlands Flower Farm are part of a developing learning platform focused on pollinators, biodiversity, food systems and hands-on agriculture.

At The Bee Place, beekeeper Julia Common welcomes school groups and community members to learn about the role bees play in food production and healthy ecosystems.

Nearby, Southlands Flower Farm provides habitat and forage for pollinators while offering workshops focused on growing, seasonality and floral design.

Southlands is also home to Project Pickle, a hands-on learning initiative designed to connect children and young adults with planting, harvesting and the journey from soil to plate.

Southlands is working with community partners to expand the program and develop new opportunities to focus on farming and food.

Across Delta’s farmland, rows of native flowers, shrubs, and trees have been quietly making a difference.

Known as hedgerows, these plantings provide valuable habitat for wildlife while offering practical benefits for farmers and the surrounding environment.

Often found along field edges or beside roads, hedgerows are a simple addition to the landscape that can have a big impact.

Hedgerows support an incredible variety of wildlife, from hawks and owls to butterflies, bees, and beetles.

By adding more native plants to the landscape, hedgerows provide food, shelter, and nesting sites for many different species. They also serve as wildlife corridors, creating safe pathways that allow animals to move through urban and rural landscapes.

As hedgerows mature, their benefits continue to grow.

Trees provide shade and perches for birds, while shrubs offer protective cover for small mammals and

nesting sites for birds.

Native flowers bloom throughout the growing season, providing a reliable source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinators that are essential to healthy ecosystems.

As natural buffers, they can separate fields from nearby roads while also increasing biodiversity on the farm.

By attracting pollinators, hedgerows can support crop production, while the beneficial insects they attract can help manage common crop pests.

At Salt & Harrow Farm in Delta, Suzy and Seann have seen firsthand how hedgerows can benefit their farm.

Through DFWT’s Hedgerow Program, they received the support needed to establish a hedgerow and bring these benefits to their fields.

“The hedgerow program is a game changer for us because the hedgerow acts as a buffer alongside our organically managed fields, provides pollinator and beneficial insect habitat, and is a natural wind barrier,” says Suzy.

Tsawwassen’s Emma Boyd made her Commonwealth Games debut in Glascow, Scotland with the national Bowls team.

Boyd teamed up with Kelly McKerihen in the women’s pairs competition finishing with a 4-1 record in group play with wins over Kenya, New Zealand, Botswana and Fiji and an opening loss to Wales.

Despite the 4-1 record, it was not enough for Canada to win the group and advance to the medal round.

The medal round saw England winning gold, with Malaysia the silver and Northern Ireland winning bronze.

“My 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games experience has been one I’ll cherish forever,” Boyd said.

“Representing Canada and wearing the Maple Leaf on the world stage has been an incredible privilege.

Making my Commonwealth Games debut is something I’ll always remember, and I’m so grateful for the moments I have had on and off the green.”

Boyd had a standout 2023/2024 campaign.

She and McKerihen won the Australian Open Women’s Fours, with McKerihen skipping the championship, and captured the title at the prestigious Hong Kong Classic.

Boyd also earned bronze as part of the Canadian women’s triples at the 2023 World Bowls Championships and bronze at the 2024 World U25 singles, adding to earlier titles including gold at the 2017 World U25 mixed triples and the 2019 U25 Canadian National Singles Championship.

Boyd has been with the national Bowls program for eight years.

That is one word to describe the impressive regular season and playoff for the Ladner Pioneers.

On Sunday night (Aug. 9) at the Ladner Leisure Centre, the Pioneers won their sixth straight provincial Senior B lacrosse championship completing a threegame sweep of the North Shore Indians.

Ladner won Sunday’s contest 16-10.

The game was close with the score tied seven different times.

The Pioneers led 10-8 after two periods, but outscored the Indians 6-2 in the final period.

Mitch Jones (3G, 6A) led the scoring with Haiden Dickson adding five goals.

Keegan Okino stopped 48 shots for his 6th win of the playoffs.

On Aug. 5, Ladner took game one at the LLC 13-8.

Jones led the scoring with one goal and eight assists while Spencer Bromley notched a hat trick. Okino turned aside 37 of 45 shots.

Game two was on Aug. 7 at the Harry Jerome Community Rec Centre, with the Pioneers winning 12-10.

Ben McDonald led the scoring with four goals and two assists.

Jones ended up the top points getter in the playoffs with 42 and also led with 25 assists.

Dickson was top goal getter with 20, and Okino was top goalie with an 0.853 save percentage and 7.17 goals against average.

The Pioneers won the league title with a 14-0 regular season.

They opened the playoffs with a 3-0 semifinal series win over Nanaimo.

With a 20-0 record, the Pioneers now head to Edmonton for the President’s Cup (Aug. 30 to Sept. 5) where they hope to claim their fourth national title in five years and sixth overall.

and the executive have done over the winter, trying to recruit…our goal was to bring more Delta guys into the team,” said team president John Burr. “So we were fortunate to get guys like Ben McDonald, Rhys Porteous, Mitch Jones who wanted to come back, Haiden Dickson as well, so all these guys coming into a new team, they all fit so well into the team chemistry. It’s like they have been playing for the Pioneers for eight, 10 years. It’s just wonderful to see. They’re good teammates, they’re all focussed. I’m just super happy the way this team came together this year.”

Playoffs are still going on across the country, so a final schedule for the President’s Cup is still being finalized.

Burr knows that it will be the toughest test for the team.

“It’s going to boil down to goaltending and defence.

I think we have a strong core there and of course the offensive players,” he said. “We have good depth in all areas of our team. We know it’s going to be an uphill battle. You are facing the top teams in the country in one tournament and anything can happen, so it’s relying on the players and the coaching staff to figure out who will be in the particular games and put the best team on the floor. I’m confident we can do well.”

SDU U17 Ravens win provincial bronze medal

The South Delta United U17 Boys Division 2 Ravens capped off an outstanding season by finishing third at the Provincial B Cup Championships in July after earning silver in the Coastal Cup in May. The Ravens opened the tournament with a 1-0 loss to Juan de Fuca battling through sweltering temperatures.

The team responded with resilience in its second game, earning a hard-fought 1-1 draw against familiar rivals from the Slurpee Cup, BV United.

Central defender Kyle Pearson scored the Ravens goal.

Needing a victory in their final group-stage game to keep their medal hopes alive, the Ravens faced tournament favourites Nelson Selects.

The breakthrough came in the 77th minute when Gavin Hol delivered a perfectly weighted cross to Ethan Rutherford, who calmly struck the ball off the left post and into the net.

Three minutes later, Martin Valencia took advantage of the hard work of forward Oliver Welz by striking home from distance a deflected keeper clearance to seal an impressive 2-0 victory.

The win left all four teams in the group tied on four points with the Ravens advancing as the second-place team in the group.

Winskill coach and swimmer to represent Canada

The Winskill Dolphins recently wrapped up the 2025/26 season on a high note with coach Judy Baker and swimmer Abby McLeod selected to represent Canada at the World Junior Open Water Championships in Sante Fe, Argentina this September.

This is the second year in a row that Baker and McLeod will represent Canada with both participating in the Junior World’s in Romania last summer.

Additionally, McLeod earned a spot on the Junior National team that will compete at the Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships Aug. 17 to 20 at UBC. She qualified at the recent Canadian Swimming Trials where she placed top three nationally for Juniors in the 200, 400, 800 and 1,500 free.

Naomi Mynott also had a strong event at Trials making finals for the 200 fly, 400 IM, 800 and 1,500 free and placing top five nationally in all four events for Juniors. Mynott, entering Grade 12 at South Delta Secondary has also committed to swim NCAA Division 1 at the University of West Virginia where she is receiving a full ride scholarship to swim

starting in the fall of 2027.

For Baker, her selection as a coach at another major international competition is a testament to her commitment to providing world-class training at the local club level.

Just this season, the long time Winskill coach was the lead coach for the Next Gen Distance camp in Australia where both Mynott and McLeod participated; was the lead distance coach at the 2026 Swimming Canada National Junior Development Camp in Ocala, Florida where both Mynott and McLeod participated; won the Small Team Provincial Championship at the Swim BC Winter Provincials where Mynott and McLeod were the high points earners for the team at 155 and 132 respectively; and led Winskill to be recognized among the top “On Track Clubs” in Canada under a new program developed by Swim Canada to celebrate athletes and clubs achieving excellence.

With the 2026/27 season just around the corner, expect the Dolphins to continue to make a splash in the pool!

Katherine Lucille Isaak (née Bamford) passed away peacefully on July 29th, 2026, surrounded by her family after a short but courageous battle with cancer. She loved and laughed without restraint, caring deeply for all those her light touched. From camping at the Glen, to vacationing in Palm Springs, or simply having tea with her girls, her stories and laughter echo in all of our hearts.

She will be forever missed by her devoted husband, Henry, her beloved sons, Michael (Brandi) and Andrew (Maria), her best friend and sister, Dana (Ray), and her precious grandchildren, Wyatt, Silas, and Zoe.

On Monday, July 27, 2026, Olga Irene Crawford, loving wife and mother, passed away peacefully at the age of 101 in the Bayview Seniors Community, White Rock.

Olga was born in 1924 in Regina to John and Mary Nazarewich.

She met Ralph Crawford and they married in 1952.

Over their marriage, they lived in Moose Jaw, Winnipeg, Ottawa, and Tsawwassen. Ralph predeceased Olga in 2020.

Besides being a dedicated wife and mother, Olga worked for CN Railways, CHOB radio in Moose Jaw, Famous Players Theatres, and Ralph’s dental practice in Winnipeg.

She will be greatly missed by her son Patrick (wife Donna Giberson), daughter Aileen (husband Rodney Stuart), grandson Julian, extended family, and many friends she has met along the way.

Our world is diminished and forlorn since our renaissance man, Jim Murphy, passed without warning at home. He filled our lives with his generosity, intelligence, robust conversation, quick wit, dependability, and loving devotion to family and friends. No one can take his place.

Born in Kamloops, BC, and a navy captain’s son, Jim never lived in one place too long. Victoria, Halifax, Dartmouth, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Washington, D.C. were all called home.

To fund his University of Victoria education, Jim worked as a seaman on a Danish freighter, BC forest firefighter and cab driver, graduating in 1976 with a BA in history and political science while managing the student union pub.

He earned his accounting degree in 1986 while working at the Victoria Empress Hotel, then moved on to the Mandarin Hotel and the Hotel Vancouver. It all led to somewhere he loved. In 1998, he hung out his own shingle in Tsawwassen with his wife, Trish, and opened a second office in White Rock in 2003. Jim found his work to be both rewarding and challenging; it was the best job he ever had. Jim’s work attire included his signature bow tie and unique hats.

Fatherhood brought out his best. He volunteered steadily for school and sports, and the house rang daily with the music of Jim and his sons practising. At the age of 70, becoming a father-in-law created more happiness.

Music and motorcycling brought him great joy. He evolved into a solid guitarist and clarinetist. During the last few years, he became a valued member of the Delta Music Makers. Jim’s passion for motorcycles started when he was a teenager after he won his first motorcycle in a store raffle. Jim’s other hobbies included photography, bird watching, smoking meats to perfection wearing his Hawaiian shirt, computing, and reading. He transitioned from playing squash to swimming and bicycling. Gardening and nurturing his beloved palms were important, too.

We relied on his accurate memory for events, personal and worldly. Being a history major, his knowledge was vast and comprehensive. An unshakeable belief in democracy guided him throughout life.

Jim is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 37 years, Trish, sons Joseph, William (Hailey), and Jonathan (Samantha); sisters Dorrie (Brad) and Kathleen; sister-in-law Madeline (Bob-deceased); Aunts Helen (Jean-Pierre) and Carol; stepmother Betty; many cousins, nephews, nieces, friends and clients. Jim’s mother, Joan, tragically predeceased him in 1987 and his father, Thomas, in 2019.

Our words are inadequate to convey how deeply loved Jim was, and how much we will miss him. Gone too soon at 73.

Maurice “Mak” Arthur Kinsey of Tsawwassen, British Columbia, passed away on August 7, 2026, at the age of 100.

Maurice was predeceased by his beloved wife, Iris.

He is lovingly remembered by his daughter, Jacquelyne (Stephen); his son, Steven (Michele); and his grandchildren, Christopher (Shannon) and Sarah (Lachlan).

A retired Canadian Armed Forces fighter pilot, Maurice flew the CF-100 and CF-101 Voodoo. Flying remained one of his great passions throughout his life, and he shared his knowledge and enthusiasm by teaching Air Cadets in Delta for many years.

Maurice was devoted to his community. He was instrumental in establishing the Delta Hospital Foundation and led the Remembrance Day service in Ladner from 1980 to 2007. Through these contributions, he honoured service, strengthened his community, and helped inspire future generations.

An avid golfer and sailor, Maurice also enjoyed tennis and swimming. He will be remembered for a life defined by dedication—to his family, his country, aviation, and the community he called home.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honour Mak’s memory are invited to contribute to a charity of their choice.

Fond memories linger every day, Remembrance keeps them near.

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Mary “Chuckie” Charlotte Park at the age of 88 on May 23, 2026, in Ladner, British Columbia. Mary was born on September 20, 1937, in Hamilton, Ontario. Known lovingly to most as “Chuckie,” she grew up as a spirited tomboy whose strength, humour, and fiercely caring nature remained with her throughout her life.

Chuckie was a warm, kind, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, aunt, and great-aunt whose caring nature touched countless lives.

Together, Chuckie and her husband George dedicated much of their lives to caring for children, teens, and adults with developmental disabilities through operating group homes. They were especially connected to First Nations communities in Northern British Columbia, supporting emergency placement homes for children at risk with compassion and dedication, always believing in the importance of preserving cultural traditions and helping families reunite whenever possible. Their patience, generosity, and caring spirit were known to all who met them.

In 1978, a job caring for adults with developmental disabilities brought Chuckie, George, and their family across the country to Ladner, British Columbia. This became the beginning of many years of operating group homes that touched the lives of countless children, adults, and families. Among their many adventures were yearly trips to Mexico in their motorhome, creating cherished memories together over the years.

Ladner remained close to Chuckie’s heart, and she deeply valued the sense of community and connection she shared with her neighbours there.

Chuckie found joy in caring for others, whether family, friends, or animals. She especially loved hummingbirds, and feeders were always placed outside her windows so she could watch them from inside her home. The hummingbirds remained year-round and brought her endless comfort, peace, and happiness.

Her appreciation for nature and all living creatures reflected the gentle and caring spirit she carried throughout her life.

To her family, Chuckie was a mother of grace, offering unconditional love, compassion, strength, and comfort to all who entered her life. Her faith, gentle spirit, and selfless devotion to others were reflected in the way she lived each day, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

Chuckie held the memory of her mother close throughout her life, and her greatest happiness always came from her children, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and the many people she welcomed into her life with open arms.

Chuckie is survived by her loving family, including her brother Walter. The family is especially grateful she was able to return to Hamilton, Ontario, where she grew up, to visit him twice in the last few years. She cherished her nieces and nephews and was grateful to spend time with Walter’s children and their families during those visits.

The family would like to thank Dr. Turnbull and Jill for their care, kindness, and support over the years. Their compassion and dedication meant so much to Chuckie and her family.

Her family finds comfort in imagining Chuckie reunited with her mother and with George, with whom she shared a deep and lasting bond throughout their lives together. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered for her gentle heart, adventurous spirit, humour, unwavering kindness, and the love she gave so freely every day.

In keeping with Chuckie’s wishes, no formal service will be held. Her family will remember and celebrate her in their hearts and memories.

Graham Richard Parker, born November 13, 1934, in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, passed away peacefully on July 27, 2026, at the age of 91.

Graham spent his childhood years in Edmonton, Alberta. He attended Victoria Composite Secondary School and went on to the University of Alberta to obtain his degree in chemical engineering. It was during his time in Edmonton that he met his life companion, Joyce. They shared 67 years of a loving marriage filled with worldwide work adventures, and global vacations - travelling to virtually all the continents with no places that they did not visit when given the opportunity.

Graham's work career began in the explosives industry, working for CIL on James Island, BC, before relocating to Hinton, Alberta, to get his introduction to the pulp and paper industry, working as technical superintendent in the local mill for about 12 years. In 1974, he had the desire to leave smalltown Alberta and relocated his family to the west coast to settle in Tsawwassen, the community he would call home for the rest of his life. He had his own small forestry consulting business before finally joining an engineering firm that ultimately became known as HA Simons. He retired as one of the senior engineers overseeing the forestry group, but always specializing in the pulp and paper sector. His time with HA Simons took him to oversee projects where he lived in Swaziland, Africa, for a year and Melbourne, Australia, for five years.

Graham was a very outgoing individual who would always have time for anyone he met. His quick wit and humour were something he excelled in. Sharing a meal, drink, or coffee over conversations around sports, politics, situations around the globe, or any other topic was something he enjoyed. Over the years, he was a volunteer for various organizations: a town counsellor and member of the police board while in Hinton, a member of Kinsmen and Kiwanis organizations in various locations, and a board member for a number of non-profit organizations Outside of work, Graham found great joy in his early years fishing and camping, playing fastball, curling, bowling, and golf. Later in life, travelling the world, watching most sports, and golf were his real passions. He was an avid golfer and proud member of the Beach Grove Golf Club, where he spent many hours trying to improve his game, with limited success but not from lack of trying!

Graham was extremely proud of his five boys: David (Marion), Warren (Jeannie), Craig (Barb), Kelly (Kelli), and Richard (Kim); ten grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Graham is predeceased by his parents, Dave and Beth Parker, his wife Joyce (2023), and his grandsons Michael (2002) and Jeremy (2015).

By his request, no service will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Delta Hospital in his memory.

Wilma "Joan" Lord (Melny), born November 8, 1941, passed away peacefully on July 21, 2026, at the age of 84. Joan was known for her great sense of humour and her ability to make those around her feel comfortable and at ease. She was loved by many.

Joan lived an interesting life with many different chapters throughout. She was very proud of her career in healthcare, initially working as a nurse but finding her calling at GF Strong Rehabilitation Hospital as a Sexual Health Clinician. She was a pioneer in this field, helping those who had suffered life-altering injuries regain their independence and enjoyment of life.

Outside of her professional life, Joan was an avid gardener who loved planting big and beautiful gardens. She also enjoyed travel and experiencing all that different cultures had to offer. Whether she was at work or in her garden, or traveling the world, Joan was known for her knack for real estate, love of shopping, and her keen sense of fashion, something she took great pride in.

Joan called many places home, including Vancouver, Bowen Island, Victoria, and even Winchester in the UK. In her final years, she settled in Tsawwassen, where she very much enjoyed the central location and easily accessible shops and activities.

Joan was very loved by her family and will be dearly missed.
