Following a rallyinLadneron March29, attended by hundredsof residents,thereis stillnotimelinefrom theprovincial governmentonwhenfull construction will startonthenew Beedie Long-Term Care Centre in Ladner.

Nearlysix weeksaftertheNDP released its budgetandannouncedthat it was “adjustingthetiming ofdelivery”oflong-term care projects in Delta, Abbotsford, Campbell River, Chilliwack, Kelowna, Fort St Johnand Squamish,the Optimist, reached out to provincial Infrastructure Minister Bowinn Ma seeking someanswers and clarityon theprovince’s position.

“Itis absolutelyunderstandablethat peopleareconcerned whentheyhearthat such a much-needed projectisn’tontrack to be delivered as previously expected,” said Ma.

“Itisanimportantprojectand I want to emphasize that. It isnot being cancelled. It is being puton pause so we can work withtheFraser Health Authority to getthe project to whereitneeds to be in order to proceed.

“Theintentionis to delivermore long-term care beds onthe site in Delta.”

Throughtheeffortsofthe Delta Hospital Community

Health Foundation,morethan$18million has been raised towardsthefundingoftheproject.

Pre-load work continuesontheproposed construction site at Delta Hospital,whichisexpected to wrap up in May. Work willthen stopuntiltheprovincegives the go-ahead.

“Itisnota secret to anyonethat B.C.’s fiscal situation isina very challenging state, asisthefiscal state ofthe governments rightacrossthecountry,”she said.

“What this hasmeant, particularly forthisupcoming year, governments had to takea really hard look at what theyare spendingonforthisfiscal yearandwhat we are

borrowingmoneyfor, sowe had to take a hard look at the capitalinvestments andwhat wasandwhat wasnot ready to go.

“The Deltalong-term care centre, unfortunately, was notoneoftheprojectsthat was ready to go and could not justify borrowingmoney at theinterest ratesthat currentlyexistfortheprovincefor aprojectthat we knew wasn’t going to be able to breakgroundthis year asexpected.

“So, we aretakingthetime overthisnext year to work withFraser Healthandotherhealth authorities to take anotherlook at someofthesedeferredprojectsand how we deliverthemand make sure that we arein a place to be considered in Budget2027.”

Ma saidtheprojectdesign was well overthe approved budget andthefundingis simply notthere to proceed.

“I do want to emphasizethat we are so gratefulfor the contributions of the community andthat it really speaks to how importanttheprojectisforthecommunityand we knowthat,whichiswhy we are committed to getting thisproject to a pointwhereit canproceed,” she said.

At the March30 Deltacouncilmeeting, council unanimously approved sending a letter to Premier Eby, Health Minister JosieOsbourne and Ma callingfor the reversalofthisdecision.

Ma saidshe was awareoftheletter.

“Itis absolutelyunderstandablethat council would be advocatingfortheircommunity,for such animportantproject, butuntil we can getthecost estimate down fortheproject, we arenot able to proceed with it,” she said.

Incumbent Couns. Daniel Boisvert, Rod Binder, Jennifer Johaland Dylan Kruger have beenannouncedasthe first candidates runningfor One Delta in October’scivicelection.

One Delta madetheannouncement Tuesdayafterthe party’s name was approved latelast week by Elections BC.

One Delta says they will runafull slate of candidatesinthe municipal election.

In announcingthe party name, One Deltaalso welcomedafamiliarface in Delta politicsaslong-timecouncillorBruce McDonald was named party president.

“Deltadeserves steady leadershipthat empowers all members of counciland respectstaxpayers,” said McDonald,who served nine termson counciland received theFreedomof theCity award.

“I’ve spent35 years watching mayors comeand go,and I’m very worried aboutthe currentleadershipandthe impactit’s having.The strongest teams arethose willing to ask toughquestions and have open, respectfuldebate.

“One Deltabrings togetherexperiencedleaderswhoarenotafraid to do just that. Taxpayers can have confidenceina teamcommitted to account-

ability,transparencyand puttingthe communityfirst,whichiswhy I’m standing with One Delta.”

Kruger said residents want to see city hall get back to basics.

“They want dependable services, well-maintained roads and parks and leadershipfocusedonpractical results, not politicaltheatre,” saidKruger.

“Having someone withBruce McDonald’s experienceand reputation stepforward to supportthis team reinforceshowimportantitisthat we restoretrustand put Deltafirst.”

After working to strengthenthecommunityfrom withinthe current system, thefourcouncillors sayit’s timefor leadershipthat listens,plansfor tomorrowanddelivers for residents.

One Delta’s prioritiesinclude:

• Strengtheningfinancial oversight andtransparency

• Maintaining roads, parks, and recreationfacilities across all neighbourhoods

• Supporting police,fire, andemergencypreparedness teams

• Encouragingopencouncildebate andcitizen-ledcommittees

• Making city hallmore welcoming and responsive to residents.

The party says improvingtransparencyand publicinvolvementisessential to restoring trust. “We want people to feel welcome at city hall,instead offeelinglikethey’refightingit,” said Johal. “Residentsdeserve to knowtheir voices matterandthat theirinput will

Public safety remainsacorefocus, withcommitments to supportfirst respondersandensureneighbourhoods remain safe.

“When peoplefeel safe wherethey live, the wholecommunity benefits,” said Binder.“We willcontinueadvocatingforthe resourcesthat ourfirst respondersneed to dotheir jobs well.”

On infrastructure, the party says Delta must continue making steady, city-wideimprovements to the facilities residents rely on every day.

“Playgrounds, sportsfields,and recreationcentres must continue to be maintainedandall partsof Delta deserve access to these services,” added Boisvert.

“Consistent investment requires leadershipthat listensandplans. We’re going to keep improving what residents usemost, upgrade what’s agingand buildforthefuture.”

Kruger said One Deltais ready to lead.

That’s according to a Delta staff report outliningthe myriadofissues thecityfindsitself beingforced to pay asit absorbs about$7 million annually indirectdownloadingcosts.

Deltacouncil recently agreed to have stafflook into howthe citycouldhelppromote saving olderhomesfromthewrecking balland repurposethemfor low-costhousing.

At their March31meeting, councilheardapresentationfrom Glyn Lewis, CEO andfounderof Renewal Development, on sustainable home re-locationsand waste reduction.

Noting too many good single-familyhomesaredemolished, Lewis toldcouncilthat about2,700homesare torn down acrossthe region to make spaceforhigher-densitydevelopment, with about131demolished every yearin Delta.

That number isexpected to increase dramatically with provincialhousinglegislation, relaxed zoning policiesand other economicfactors.

Basedonhistoric ratesof demolitionandtheexperienceintheCityof Auckland, New Zealand,wherethereare similarhousing policies,itis projectedmorethan45,045 homes will be torndown across Metro Vancouver overthenext 10 years to accommodate residential redevelopment.

The report outlined several policy recommendationsfor Metro Vancouverasaframework to encourage municipalities to avoiddemolitionand encouragehome relocation.

Amongthemis requiring all single-familyhomes slated fordemolition to undergo anassessment to determine whetherthehome can be relocatedordeconstructed.

Thejudge concludedthatMeeks didn’t intend to causethecollision,andthat she didn’tknowifhesaw thered left-turn signal, butifhedidn’t,heshould have.

Thecollisioninvolved thepickup andanoncoming, westbound Kia Soul, with twooccupants,withthe passenger sufferingbrokenbones,a brain injury, fracturedvertebrae,fractured ribs,among otherinjuries.Thedriverofthe Kiasuffered extensivebruisingand cannolongerrun becauseofrandom spikes of pain.

Thejudge addedthat there’snomedicalevidence that Meeksfainted or passed out, andconcludedthatMeeks wasconsciousduring theincident.

Afterthecollisionin April2023, he’d alsohad aheart attackinJune 2023 requiringhospitalizationfor23 days.

ButMeeks alsosaidundercrossexamination that he hadfaintedseveraltimes in periodsbeforethe crash,although he hadnorecollectionoffeeling faintbefore thecollision.

Thejudge alsoconcludedthere wasno evidenceMeeks waslooking at his GPS while he wasturningandno medical evidencethat he hadfaintedorpassedout duringthe incident andthat theCrown hadproventhat he wasconscious.

Harrisconcludedthat “a reasonable person would have foreseenthe risk of his conductandtaken steps to avoidit.”

Apre-sentencereporttakes place June 15in Surrey provincialcourt.

Deltacouncil recentlyendorsed amotion to askthe Unionof BC Municipalities(UBCM) to formally convey strong concern to theprovincial governmentof chronicprovincialunderfundingthat resulted in staffing cuts at theAgriculturalLand Commission(ALC).

Themotion putforward by Coun. DylanKrugernotestheunderfunding hasunderminedconfidence in the province’s commitment to safeguarding agricultural land,also callingonthe province to immediately restore, stabilizeand significantly increasefunding and recognizethe “agriculture sectoras acriticalandnon-negotiableprovincial priority.”

The samemotion wasalso recently approved by theCityof Chilliwack’s council.

Delta last year submitteda resolution totheUBCM callingforthe strengthen-

ingoftheALC’senforcement capabilities,allowing fora significantexpansion ofitscomplianceandenforcement team.

That camefromconcerns regarding large structures appearingon agricultural land,promptingthe municipality to direct staff to coordinateandassist theALConfutureenforcement onnoncompliant buildings.

A report last year pointed outthat theALConly haseight staffmembers, whichincludes sixofficers, oneadviser andone supervisor, eventhough the ALC regulatesand oversees landuse legislationfor approximately4.6million hectaresof AgriculturalLand Reserve (ALR) landacross BC.

A recent separate report on governmentdownloadingnotes that Delta staffaretakingona significantenforcement role withintheALR.

Costsareestimated at about$200,000 for Delta, butthatnumber can vary significantly year-over-year, the report notes.

Ifanyonein ourcommunity thinks thenew Beedie Long-term Care Centre will beginfullconstruction anytime soon, you’d betterthink again.

I spoke with Ministerof Infrastructure Bowinn Ma latelast weektrying to get someanswers as to whytheproject, and sixother long-term care projects across B.C., were paused when theprovinceannounced its budgetin February.

The simpleanswer: theprovincedoesnot have the money.

Ma said governmentcontinues to work withthe Fraser Health Authorityandotherhealth authoritiesinthe province to gettheseprojects back on budgetandmore fiscally refined.

In the caseofthe Beedieproject next to Delta Hospital,aprojectthat throughthe Delta Hospitaland Community Health Foundation, raised more than $18 millionandwherepre-load work is wellunderway, Ma says theprojectis over budgetand is notshovel ready.

So much forthe generosity of this community.

So much forallthefamiliesinneed oflong-term care fortheirlovedoneswho have been waitingfor yearsfor aproper care centre to replace Mountain View Manor whichopened in1977.

WhileI appreciated Ma’s time,heranswers only serve asmoreexcusesfora governmentthat isincapableof governing.

I’ll be honest, Iusually like to keepthings positiveinthis space,upliftingandcommunityminded,alittlehopeful nudgefor the weekahead. But every now andthen, I’ve got to spita littletruth. Consider this oneofthosemoments. Here itis. Not everyonewho seems good …is good.

Some people withless-than-great intentions have mastered a clever strategy. They surroundthemselves with genuinely kind,credible, communityoriented people.

Let’slook at somefacts,shall we?

As reported by Lodestar Mediacolumnist Rob Shaw in Februaryfollowing the releaseofthe budget,the total provincialdebtis set to hit$183billionin2026-27. That’s a rise of18 percentina single year,49 percent from when Premier David Eby tookofficeand178 percent sincetheNDPformed governmentin2017.

Last week,S&Pdowngraded B.C.’s credit rating from A+ to A— withanegative outlook.

What doesthisallmean? Well, put simply, we have a governmentthat offersconsistent deficits, a debtthat continues toballoonandno clearplanin sight to balanceits budget.

In February,Bridgitte Anderson,president ofthe Greater Vancouver Boardof Trade,inaninterview with Lodestar said, “Thisisa very dark day,” whendescribing the budget.

It certainly was. Andthey’renot going to getany better. Thereare darker days ahead.

It’s like social camouflage. If enough goodfolksarenearby,it canthrow you offthe scententirely. Youthink,“Well, they must be solid…look whothey’re with!”

Meanwhile, yourinstinctsarequietly tapping you ontheshoulder saying, “Hey … something’soffhere.”

And yet, we ignoreit.

Because inaplacelike Delta,where community means something, we want to believe the best in people. That’s a beautiful thing. Butit canalso make us alittle generous with ourtrust.

Now,thisisn’t about becoming cynicalor walkingaround side-eyeing everyoneinLadner Village. (Although, let’s be honest, the parking situation alonecould sometimes justifyit.) It’s aboutdiscernment.

So pay attention to patterns,not proximity.

Just because someone stands beside good peopledoesn’tmean they stand likethem.

Characterisn’tcontagious by association. It showsupinconsistency,in how peopletreatotherswhen there’s nothing to gain,andinwhat they do whennoone’s watching, not just who they’rephotographed with at events.

Thetruthis,mostofus have encounteredthis before. The charm. The polish. The carefully curatedcircle. And then…thedisconnect.

So here’sthe gentle reminder:trust your gut. It’s usually wiserthan we give itcreditfor. You can be kindanddiscerning. Supportiveand aware.

Because a strong communityisn’t just builton good people. It’s also builton peoplewhoare willing to see clearly.

Re: Intersection Safety at Ladner Trunk Road and62nd Street.

Iamwritingon behalf ofthe Delta Police Departmentin response to recentletters regarding safety at theintersection ofLadnerTrunk Road and62nd Street.

Firstandforemost, we want to acknowledge theconcerns raised by Ashley Goring andother communitymembers.

Anyincident involving a pedestrian, particularly a youth,isdeeply concerning, and we recognizetheimpactthese events have onfamilies andthecommunity.

It isimportantthat discussionsaround safety areinformed by accurate information.

Between Jan.1,2020, and year-to-date2026, there have been11 police-reportedcollisions

at thisintersection.Of these, fourinvolved injuries,andoneinvolved a pedestrian (Jan.12, 2026). The remaining incidents were primarily vehicle-to-vehiclecollisions,includingminor property damage and traffic-related offences.

I canconfirmthat we have not hadanyfatalcollisionsinthisintersection.

Whileanycollisionis one too many,this data doesnotindicateahigh frequencyof pedestrianinvolved incidents at this location.

That said, we take communityconcerns seriouslyand routinely conducttrafficenforcementaround our schools.

Since January2025, the Delta police have conducted morethan 18hoursoftargeted enforcement at theintersectionofLadnerTrunk Roadand62nd Street,

including patrolsnear Holly Elementaryduring peak schooltravel times

Thisenforcementand educationfocusedon driver behaviour, speed, andcompliance with pedestrian right-of-way.

We have also supported safety awareness through social mediaand electronic reader boards to reinforce safedriving, particularly during periodsof poor weatherand reducedvisibility.

Road safetyisashared responsibility. We encourageall roadusers to remainalertand make safe choices.

We willcontinue working withtheCityof Delta to monitor thisarea and respond to safetyconcerns.

Sinceit began,morethan18,000 people have diedin B.C. --189of them were Delta residents. That is189 friends, children, parents, siblingsand communitymembers that we have lost in oursmallcity.

There have beenextensive impacts onthelivesofthosewhoaregrieving thoselosses, andcontinuinghealth care resources supporting peoplewho have had toxicdruginjuries.

The Delta Community Action Team strives to reduce stigma towards people whouse substancesor havesubstance -usedisorderandincreasesocialconnection. We advocateforupstream

preventioninitiatives—efforts that addressthe root causesof substance useand reducethe risks long before a crisis occurs. We believe that this will resultina stronger, more resilient community.

Unregulateddrug toxicityisnow theleading causeofdeathofBritish Columbians ages19 to 59.A large percentage ofthose lives lost aremen, aged 30 to 49. Substanceusedisorder is ahealthissue, notamoralfailing.

We encourage everyone to learn more aboutthe root causesof substanceuse disorder, evidence-based treatmentandprevention,andif you can, to gettrained to use Naloxone.

In North Delta, we too areconcerned aboutthe lack ofhealth-carefacilitiesand services.

We have nohospital, no Urgent andPrimary Care Centre, nohospice andashortage ofdoctors.

The BC Primary Care Report released by the provincial government in August 2025 revealed that in B.C.,76 percent of

residentsare attached to adoctor, butin SurreyNorth Deltaitisonly 70 percent.

It may seem to some that North Deltaand South Deltaare two solitudes, butinaddition to health-careconcerns, residentsarealsounited by ouropposition to over-densificationand high rises.

While Tsawwassen residents have been successfulinopposinghighrise developmentsinthe town centre, in North Delta we haven’t-city council has beendeaf to ouropposition to their

planforanentire six kilometre stripof Scott Road forcondominiumsand 30-plus storey high-rise towers.

Andwhile Delta South MLA Ian Paton has spoken outforhealth care and againsthigh-rise towers, Delta NorthMLA Ravi Kahlon hasnotonly been silent abouthealthcare needsandhighrises, it was hislegislation as housing ministerthat enabledandencouraged Deltacouncil to include high-risesintheOfficial Community Planinthe first place.

Please make it stop! Theongoing Massey Tunnelorbridgenonsense has becometiresome.

I roll my eyes whenalettercontains “let’s look at a few facts,” becausethe factsused maynot be facts at all.

Theintentionallyforgotten reason to replacethe George Massey Tunnel had nothing to do withtrafficcongestion.

Rather,the tunnelacted asadikepreventing largecontainerships,colliers andtankersfromtravelling to Fraser Surrey Docks, so the BNSF Railway wouldnot have to pay“wheelage” to BC Rail,which stilloperatestheline to the Delta superport.

Asthe VancouverFraser Port Authority wouldnotfundtheestimated $1 billion needed to readjustthe many weirs and dikesdesigned to self-scourthe river to mitigate dredgingcosts,theylostinterest inanewcrossing.

Theend result,thecrossing became a politicalfootballandnotoneof good transportationplanning, because, there arenoplansforanewcrossing ofthe NorthArmoftheFraser,takingpressure offthe Oak, Knight,and Queensborough bridges. Thusgridlock willnot just

remain, butincrease.

Asnocontract was signed to build thebridge andtheissueof securing a firmfoundationforthe massive towers needed fora cable-stayed bridge are still unsolved,anycostsmentioned todayare, likethe current North Shore Watertreatmentfiasco, spurious.

Whya tunnelinsteadofa bridge?

Soilconditions.Andit was soil conditionsthat sawthe original George Massey Tunnel builtinsteadofabridge. So letus putanend to this tiresome bridge or tunneldebate, becausefor both projects,it willincrease gridlock and congestion.

Deltacouncil last week approved a$16,852heritage conservationfund grant to helpfund window replacement forthehistoricLarsen Residence at 11102 River Rd.

The totalestimated costoftheprojectis$33,705.

Thegrant requestis subject to the building beingadded to Delta’s heritage register, andthe ownersentering into acovenant to maintainandprotectthe dwellingfor10 years.

According to theCityof Delta,the KnuteLarsen Residence, builtin1905, wasthefirst house built in thearea, afterthe Gunderson House. It was built by Pete Peterson, a Norwegian builder,for Knute Larsen.

Delta’s BarnsideBrewing wasthe settingforafederalfundingannouncement last week to provide some muchneeded support to Canadianbreweries, distilleriesand wine makers

Delta MP Jill McKnight, madethe announcementofa two-yearextension ofalcoholexciseduty relief, to protect brewers, distillers, and winemakers.

According to anews releasefromthe federal government, by renewingthese measures,thefederal governmentis providing relief to Canadian businesses, particularly local craftbreweries,that contribute to jobsandlocal economies.

Effective April1,the government’s combined measuresareoffsetting risingcostsforanadditional two yearsin two ways:

First, the governmentis capping inflationaryincreases: Theannualinflationadjustmenton beer, spirit,and

wineexciseduties will remain capped at two percent.

Second,the governmentisprovidingtargeted relief to craftbrewers: The exciseduty rate onthefirst 15,000hectolitresof beerbrewed in Canada will remain cut by half.

Together,these twomeasuresare expected to providemorethan$30millionin total reliefthrough to 2028. For a craftbrewery, reducingtheexciseduty rate by halfonthefirst 15,000hectolitres representsup to about$90,000in additionaltax savingsin the2026-27fiscal yearalone.

“HereinBritish Columbia, craft brewersareacornerstoneof ourlocal economy,creating good jobs, supportinglocal agriculture, andbringingcommunities togetheracrossthe Lower Mainland,including Delta,” said McKnight. “Extendingthesetax measuresmeanscraftbrewers have the stabilitytheyneed to invest, hire, and innovate.”

Delta will payanadditional$211,684 this yearforthecity’smembershipinthe Fraser Valley Regional Library(FVRL) system.

A report made public at council last weeknoted that a revised budget option selected for2026fora4.52 percent increase, whichbrings Delta’s totalmembershipassessment to $4,894,199.

The FVRL boardestablishesanannual budgetfortheprovision of library services to its15member jurisdictions.Each member municipalityis chargedalevy to coveroperatingcostsofthelibrary branchesandcentraladministration.

Anarea thathas seen much change in librariesisthedemandfordigital materials.

A FVRL report notestheyare inhigh demand withcirculationincreasing at double-digit ratesforthe past decade,and digitalcirculationnow making up about 40 percentof totalcirculation,despitethe

digitalcollection lackingthedepthand volumeofthephysicalcollection.

Circulationgrowth overthe yearsis nowentirelydue to growthindigitalcirculation with overallphysicalcirculation steadilydeclining, primarily in physical audio/video.

Meantime,theCityof Delta recently issued a requestforbidsforupgrades to theLadnerPioneer Library.

The work includesconstructionofan interioruniversalaccessible washroom andotherinteriorandexterior building upgrades. The work also includesnew carpet,furnitureandshelving.

Council last year agreed to seek FVRL board approval to allocate up to $715,000 infunding support towardsthe renovationproject.

Thefunding camefromthe FVRL’s member salary and benefit reserve.

The totalprojectcostfortheproject wasestimated at $900,000, but between thecity’s2025 to 2029 Financial Planand reserves, Deltaonly hada totalof$200,000 available.

It was somethingthat just had to be done, perhaps so residentsand visitorsarenot surrounded by trashastheyenjoy South Delta.

On March28, a groupof18 volunteers roustedaround onthe Tsawwassen Causeway Beachanddragged out about225 kg of garbage in aboutfouranda half hours.

“The beachlooks so

much better, butthere is so much more still,” saidLadner’s Maxwell Sudermann,whoorganized the cleanup.

Volunteersfocusedon removing junkfrom the blackberry bushesand found someold cabinet

doorsandoldnewspapers.

“It was wildhow much garbage wasactually left. We had everything from ropes, to unfortunately,there arelotsof condoms,a surprising amount,” he said.

He addedthat a total of18 bags were collected that day andfilledapickuptruck.

It wasthefirst timethe cleanup tookplaceon the beachforthe volunteers.

It wasacombined effortof Community Ground Community Care, a loose organizationhelpingthose with mobilityissues,and funded by hiscompany Sunscape Outdoor Maintenance.

Thegroup cleanedup a good part ofthelength ofthe beach, just before the boat ramp, on the south sideofthe causewaywhere people have bonfiresand launch their boatsand paid attention to the hard to reach areas intheunderbrush.

They may do other cleanupsaround town andanother cleanupon the causeway in midor late summer.

Big changes have been made to the upper managementofthe Delta Ice Hawks.

The Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) team, now based at North Delta’s Sungod Arena, announcedon Tuesday, March31that headcoach and general manager Steve Robinson was relievedofhisdutiesafter eightand a half seasons withthe club.

Thisfollowedthe Ice Hawks being bouncedinthe second roundofthe playoffsinfive games by the Ridge Meadows Flames.

Robinson joinedthe Ice Hawks in January2018andledthe team to the first PJHLtitlein six years, followed by a silvermedal at the Cyclone Taylor Cup.

That seta toneforthe Hawks, who madetheplayoffs(advancing to at least the semi-finals)in every season except oneunderhisleadership.

In 2022,the Hawkshosted the Cycloneand won silveronhome ice.

Thenext year, Delta wonanintense finals matchup to taketheleague title andadvance to the Cyclone again. Over thenine yearsofhis tenure,the Hawks went244-98-16-11-5.

“This team hasshared many laughs, many tears,and many greatmoments withcoach Steve,” saidthe Ice Hawks ina statement. “Thank you, Stevo, for everything you’ve doneforthis organization. You’llalways be a part ofthe Hawks family– we wish youthe best.”

On Thursday, April2,the club announcedthehiringof Mark Burgin asthe team’snew general managerand Rick Lanzasheadcoach.

Burginbringscoachingand board roles with Semiahmoo Minor Hockey, BC Floorball boarddirector, founder

ofDiversity Athletics Society,and BC Hockey boarddirector.

He has worked withthe Vancouver Canucks’ “Conversationinthe Locker Room”,iscertified Power Edge Pro (PEP)instructorand Cognitive Sports Performance Coach, and wasafinalist oftheNHL’s Willie O’Ree Community Hero Awardin2024.

He has spent years training, developing, and mentoring athletesinthe WHL,NCAA, ECHL,AHL,andNHLonandofftheice.

“I amhonoured to jointhe Delta Ice Hawks asthe team’s general manager,” said Burgininanews release. “With a collectivefocusonplayerdevelopment, playeradvancement, and building a programthat young athletesaspire to be part of, we strive to continue to buildanorganization that thecommunity can rallyaround. Following hisprofessionalplaying career,Lanztransitionedinto coaching and scouting, servinginheadcoaching rolesin boththe BCHLandWHL.

In 2004, he ledthe Burnaby Express to a Canadian Junior A Championship, capturingthe Centennial Cup— widely regarded asoneofthemost challenging trophies to winin Canadian hockey. He hasalso worked asahead scoutfor severalNHLorganizationsand was part ofthe St. Louis Bluesorganizationthat wonthe Stanley Cupin2019.

Most recently,Lanz served ashead coachofthe Delta Hockey Academy U-17Prep team, guiding theprogram

to a 26-1-3 recordandafirst-placefinishamong22 teamsinthe CSSHLPrep Division,as wellas holdingadevelopmental role withthe Hawksforthe last coupleof years.

Maureen wasbornonJune5, 1935, in Charing Cross, London, England to Williamand Ellen(née Steeden) Starling. Herdream wastobecomea teacher, and shequalifiedforhighereducationbut wasunable to go to universityasher family needed hertogoout to work.

Maureen was18yearsold when shemet theloveof her life, Michael John Harbottata cyclingclub meetinginWestHam,Londonand they marriedon March 29, 1958. They livedanadventurous life, emigrating to SouthAfrica, NorthernRhodesia (Zambia),and then making Canada theirhomein 1969.

Maureen will be remembered forherunwavering supportofherhusbandandchildren,andher love of adventureand travel.She lovedquilting, tennis, her rose garden, reading,writing,and acupof teawith hermanyclose friends.Her greatestjoy washer family.

Maureen wasthebeloved wife of Michael for68 yearsand adevoted mother to Stephen (Teresa), Nicola (Barry), Melanie(Bruce),and Abigail (Spencer). Shelovedallofher tengrandchildrenand five great-grandchildrendeeply. Sheisalsosurvived by twoofherbrothers, Michael (June)and Derek (Christine),and many niecesandnephews, andpredeceased by herparents, herdear sister Pamela,andherbrother BrianinEngland.

JoiningBeach GroveGolfCourse in 1968,George wenton to serve on theboard aspresidentand make valuable contributions to thejuniorprogram. George lovedto spend time withhis grandkids, read,and travel, especiallytoMaui.

George islovinglyremembered by hiswifeof51 years, Natalie;theirchildren, Julie (Sheldon)and Kyle (Becky); as well ashisbeloved grandchildren, Georgia, Jack,Scarlett, and Wyatt.

Born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta,Pat madeher waytoVancouver in her20s,whereshe marriedand raisedherdaughter in thesuburbsof Tsawwassen. Patlater returned to schoolandbecameateaching assistant.She wouldsubsequently spend many yearsinthe DeltaSchool District workingwith learningdisabled high-school students. Patfound her time at theTsawwassenandLadnerhigh schoolsextremely rewarding, approaching students withcuriosity and compassion. Shealsoformed cherished lifelong friendships with her colleagues from school.

Patlater settledinRichmondandenjoyedher retirement yearsimmensely, engaging in her passions fortraveland learning.She lovedsharinga great meal withfriends,and zippingaround the lowermainland in herbrightorange car, visiting farmers' marketsand localsights. Shealso loveda good laughand waskindandgenerous to afault.

Always adevotedand supportive Mom, Patis survived by heronlychild,Shannon. Shealsoleaves behindher much-loved McCann cousinsin Edmonton, Alberta,aswellasmanydear friends.

Pat will be missedbyall whoknewand lovedher. Specialthankstothe kinddoctors,nurses, and care aidesat theRichmond Hospital Palliative Support Unit.

Inthesummers,you couldalwaysfindDianne in her gardenamongsther vegetablesand flowersorather next-doorneighboursspoilingall thehorsesand chickens.

Shealsospent thelast25+ yearsvolunteeringmany hours at theLadner Thrift Store, whereshe madea lotof greatfriends.She spent many hoursathome workingonthriftstore projects.Her mainjoyatthe thrift storewas to make sure theother volunteers laughedandhad fun. Turnsout shewas very good at this.

Hergreatestlovewas forher family,especiallyher grandsonsand great-grandsons.

Born in Karlsruhe,Germany,toFriedaand Hermann Auer, Lindaperseveredthrough wartimechallenges, meetingthe love ofher life, Guenther,atthe local Sports Club.She followeddad to Canada in 1952 to join himfor “a year.” Aftera shortcourtship, they married, celebrating72yearsof“doing what comes naturally”together.

Lindaand Guentherbegan theirlifetogether in Winnipeg with onlya down quilt and aspoonand bowl between them.Two yearslater,theypacked theirtwo toddlers, Ralphand Susan, into theirVW Beetle,tiedthe cribsonthe roof,andheaded to Vancouver.Arrivingonthe westcoast,they welcomed Petertothe family and shortlythereafter settled in Tsawwassen, whereLinda transformed the bareproperty of theirfirst homeintoagarden paradise.Small butmighty, sheworkedtirelessly, nurturingher vegetable and flower gardensand tacklingthe lawnswithher manual reel mower. Whennot in thegarden, shewaspassionately knitting sweatersfor thefamily, puttinguppreserves, making jelly, andbiking to get groceriesandother goods.Thrift, borneoutof wartimenecessity, dictated thatnothing waseverwasted; even outgrownclothingwaspainstakinglybraided into rugs.

OurhomeinTsawwassenwasalways open to friendsand family,and ahubof whatever sports teamsthe family wasinvolvedin.Lindadelighted in lovingus with herdeliciousbaking, meals, and hospitality. This caring forotherscontinued even afterdownsizing to theirOcean Park BlackForest home, where, despite thepoor soil (compared to Tsawwassen),Linda received recognition from Surrey forherbeautiful garden. Fortunately, her many skills andher independentandhardworking naturewerepassedalong to children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Missing momare Ralph(Christie), Susan(Steve), and Peter(Candy), whothank theirchildrenand grandchildrenfor theirlovingvisitstoOma,Dr. Arjun Odredraforhiscareoverthepastfew years, and to Woodgrove Manor stafffor theircompassionand kindnessinher finaldays.

Barbarahad anaturalgift forconversationand genuinelyenjoyed connecting with people. She dedicatedmanyyearsvolunteeringthrough St. David’sinTsawwassen, whereher kindnessand welcomingnaturetouched many in thecommunity. Sheenjoyed spending time with her family and friendsand lovedtravellingthe world, most recently with her lifelong friend, Betty, sharingmany memorableadventuresand experiences together.
