Mayor wants bats out of Burrvilla

Jackson calls regional district program a ‘real insult’ to historic structure SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s an insult to the city and its heritage. Mayor Lois Jackson isn’t mincing words when it comes to Metro Vancouver using one of Delta’s most important heritage landmarks as a home for bats.

The regional district is conducting research on a colony of well over 2,400 bats that have taken up residency in Burrvilla in Deas Island Regional Park. “I don’t think that’s what that beautiful house should be used for. I really think they should be creating another space and moving them. It’s a real insult to

have that taking place without any thought of removing that experimentation,” Jackson told the Optimist following a regional parks committee meeting where her request for another structure to be built was denied. “I asked if they are going to use this forever as some sort of incubator and they said yes, so

I’m very unhappy about that. That is part of our heritage and it should not be used for that purpose, and will it ever be able to be used by people in the future?” asked Jackson. BURRVILLA: see Page 3 PHOTO BY SANDOR GYARMATI

Bullying loses the ‘Battle’

Pink shirts everywhere as police and fire departments face off at Sungod IAN JACQUES

The Delta Police Department came out the winner on the scoreboard, but everyone was a winner against bullying at Wednesday’s Battle of the Badges hockey challenge. With more than 1,500 students representing 15 Delta schools cheering them on at North Delta’s Sungod Recreation Centre, the DPD bested the Delta Fire Department 4-1. The game, held for the third time and second time on Pink Shirt Day, showed the true spirit of sportsmanship, camaraderie and inclusion. “The Battle of the Badges has become a wonderful annual tradition that unites our diverse community through sportsmanship,” said Mayor Lois Jackson. “As an awareness campaign, it has done a fantastic job of showing our community leaders working together to demonstrate compassion and teamwork as a way to combat bullying.” Pink Shirt Day (www.pinkshirtday. ca) chose cyberbullying as this year’s

School District superintendent Doug Sheppard. School board chair Laura Dixon said the event is just another vehicle the district utilizes in its antibullying messaging. “It’s a galvanizing event that creates a special moment where we all come together. It’s a fun event and the students can see that a friendly competition and a rivalry can also be fun,” said Dixon.

South Delta elementary schools at the event included Holly, English Bluff, South Park, Port Guichon and Ladner. Ladner Grade 6/7 teacher Jonathan Wortley said it was important to bring the students out to get them involved in community events. “Particularly the first responders and to really cement the message of Pink Shirt Day and anti-

bullying. This day highlights it, but it’s a message throughout the year,” he said. “The kids were very excited to be here. In Ladner we are a little pocket of the community, so when you see South Delta and North Delta students together like they are today you get that full feeling of community.” DPD Chief Neil Dubord was happy to see his team win, especially after the firefighters won last year. “It was a fun game. Certainly happy with the effort for sure,” said Dubord. “When you came into the arena you could feel the energy from the kids. It’s great for us as first responders to be role models for all these young students here.” Delta fire Chief Dan Copeland’s last official duty before he retires was coaching the firefighters’ team. “Guys are here for the right reason. They do this in the spirit of team sport, camaraderie and they do this on and off the ice. Delta police and fire share a special relationship,” said Copeland. “For me it’s invigorating to see all the kids in the stands.”

Burrvilla is home to largest known bat colony in province

CONTINUED from Page 1 A report to the committee notes the attic of Burrvilla is home to the largest known colony of its kind in B.C., providing an important habitat for Yuma bats and little brown bats. Unbeknownst to Jackson, bats started taking up residency in the house years ago and Metro

Vancouver regional parks staff worked with members of the South Coast Bat Conservation Society to establish an expanded bat monitoring program. The program monitors for white-nose syndrome, a rapidly spreading fungal disease that’s resulted in steep declines in North American bat populations. Jackson said the house,

which is now closed to the public, could end up with severe, costly damage, even though a plastic sheet has been laid on the upper floor. Built in 1905, Burrvilla, according to the city, reflects the turn of the 20th century economic expansion of Delta’s farming industry, and symbolizes the wealth and status

attained by the prominent Burr family. The man for whom the house was built, Henry Benjamin Burr (known as Harry), was the son of W.H. Burr, who was an early pioneer involved in the incorporation of Delta. The house remained in Burr family ownership until 1974. It was the first house in

Delta to receive heritage designation in 1981 and was moved to Deas Island Regional Park the following year. Jackson said she’ll have Delta staff investigate whether the house is still property of the city as well the conditions for its use. Moving the house away from the regional park is one possibility, she added.

The community came together last Saturday to share in a morning of fellowship, hope, tribute and respect. More than 240 Deltans gathered at Tsawwassen Springs for the 44th annual Delta Leadership Prayer Breakfast to recognize the community’s first responders. The breakfast provides an opportunity for people to gather as a reminder that many men and women in public office, as well as those in the private sector, still place a high priority on Christian values and guidance from God. Gatlin Saip, vice-chair of the organizing committee, said they expected their largest turnout ever for the event. “We’re very excited by that,” he said. “We value our religious freedom in

Canada and the fact that we are able to have a gathering like this in a public place is just part of what makes Delta and Canada such a wonderful place to live. We are so thankful for the work that our responders do. We know that it is a great sacrifice and we honour that this morning.” Guest speaker Shirley Thiessen, formerly of Tsawwassen, provided a powerful message of grief, loss and hope. She first spoke of her life growing up in South Delta and then her family’s move to Calgary in the late 1990s, her family’s trust in God and faith, and how that shaped and enriched their lives. But in 2012 their lives were turned upside down when Thiessen’s son Jordan was killed in a workplace accident just 12 days after he had got married. “Well absorbing the horrendous nightmare of

Jordan’s death, there is one truth that has been imprinted on my heart as a result of my history with God,” said Thiessen. “Jesus is my foundation, my purpose and my living hope. Although my husband and my kids are at the epicenter of the people I love most dearly, they are not my only reason for living, they are not the ultimate source of my joy — God holds that spot.” Struck by the compassion that Calgary police had for their family in delivering news of Jordan’s passing and their subsequent support, Thiessen was invited to work alongside officers in death notification training and continues that work today. She has been honoured for her work by the police and travels to speak to groups about her story. “There is no doubt in my mind that God is honouring my prayer with this work,” she related.

Police officers pull man from water

Two Delta police officers and a reserve constable braved the frozen waters of Goose Bay in Ladner last Saturday morning to rescue a man in crisis. Alerted by the man’s family that he was in crisis, officers located him driving to the end of 34th Street. The man ran into the water and was followed by the two constables, who apprehended him under the Mental Health Act. “Our constables were in

the water for an extended period of time — longer I think than they had anticipated,” said Chief Neil Dubord. “Although the ocean is not deep there, our police officers faced challenging conditions as the ocean floor was very soft, and they were sinking down each step they took. I believe the cold really started to impact them as they were two-thirds of the way back with the man. “Fortunately our fire department and another

police officer reached the scene and were able to assist them all back.” The police officers were taken to hospital, but released later that day. The man remains in hospital for treatment. “I’m very proud of the selfless actions of our officers, who risked their safety to rescue a fellow human being in distress, and I’m so pleased we had a positive outcome for this man and his family,” added Dubord.

Say hello to Shelby

Shelby is a sweet natured seven year old female American Staffie mix. Shelby leans towards shy, so her ideal furever home is a calmer, quieter one that doesn’t do a lot of super social activities they would want her involved in. She has done great with big and small dogs, is more impartial than anything, but recently started playing with her foster brother. We do not know about cats. Temperament wise she is amazing, so sweet, quiet, and she adores cuddles and attention. She needs lots of validation and reassuring right now, someone that can make her a priority as she is still anxious/timid. She follows rules very well, has no behavior problems, and is crate trained. Shelby tugs a little on leash but is developing good habits everyday! She is hilarious and communicates when she wants to play, wants attention, is ready for her dinner etc. She enjoys two long walks a day and a few good fetch or play sessions. Shelby is house trained, knows many tricks and is very treat motivated. She has no destructive tendencies at all! The best part is her doggy smile when you come home. Her cheeks wrinkle up into a huge smile! As with all our dogs, she is spayed and up to date on all shots and vaccines. Sessions ask youth what the community can do for them Delta, Fraser Health create Healthier Communities Partnership

A partnership between the City of Delta and Fraser Health is organizing two gatherings for Delta youth this month. The purpose of Zoom In: Youth Engagement Session is to work in partnership with those 12 to 19 to understand what keeps them resilient and what can the community do to support them in their healthy development. According to the Healthier Communities Partnership, youth provide new ideas and voices that can help fuel enthusiasm and invest-

ment in neighbourhoods and communities. Giving them an avenue to speak up and acknowledging their contributions allows them to establish a stake in long-term participation and contribution to their community. “These gatherings will engage participants in reviewing and nurturing their own decision-making abilities to navigate complex choices,” says Gillian McLeod, social planner for the City of Delta. “Engaging youth in their own problem-solving benefits the entire Delta

Farmers support Farm Roots Mini School IAN JACQUES

The knowledge base for the grade 10 to 12 students at the Farm Roots Mini School will continue to grow thanks to a recent donation from the Delta Farmers’ Institute. Last month Delta farmers Nancy Chong, Alicia Guichon, Maureen Malenstyn and DFI administrator Leisa Yee met with a few of the students in the Farm Roots program who will benefit from the $2,000 donation. The funds were raised at the DFI’s annual Farmers Ball, held last November at Harris Barn. The DFI represents

more than 60 multi-generational Delta farming families and works for the betterment and sustainability of the farming community. Yee said the DFI looks forward to building a working relationship with Farm Roots students. Brooke Moore, Delta school district principal of inquiry and innovation, said Farm Roots students are grateful for the donation, which they will use to finance their agricultural business plans this year. “Thank you goes out to the agricultural community of Delta for its constant show of support and enthusiasm throughout the year,” said Moore.

Youth will develop skills in growing, cooking and selling food as well as a greater connection to themselves, their community and the Lower Mainland food system. Youth also receive a stipend, community service hours and can receive high school credit for their contributions. For more information see: https://deltalearns.ca/ farmroots/.

Six honoured by TOOB with life memberships SUBMITTED PHOTO

At its most recent annual general meeting, the TOOB service club honoured six of its longest serving members. Each has been a member for over 15 years and donated hundreds of hours of volunteer time to make South Delta a better place to live. In honour of their generous contributions over the years, TOOB made each a life member. TOOB president Dave Stanton (third from left) presented a commemorative mug to new life members (from left) Hugh Coflin, Tom Nesbitt, Clay Otto, Peter White and Warren Willis. Bob Spratt was unable to attend the AGM so his mug was presented later.

ne of the most recognizable buildings in our fair city was in the spotlight last weekend as the restoration of the former home of the Delta Museum was celebrated. Preserving the building, which housed Delta’s municipal hall for 50 years and Delta’s museum for another 50, was an absolute no-brainer given the historical significance it holds in this community. It’s become an iconic structure and its central location in Ladner Village provides an anchor for the area’s heritage theme. The renovation wasn’t cheap as $2.5 million was spent, including more than $500,000 from the federal government, to bring the building into the 21st century, complete with an elevator and public washrooms. It’s a steep tab to be sure, but letting it fall into disrepair or demolishing it weren’t options so the expenditure was really a matter of when, not if. Now that the renovation has taken place, it’s created a question that’s often posed when dealing with these heritage structures: What are we going to do with it? The community police station, which had been on 48th Avenue for more than two decades, has been relocated to one floor of the centuryold building on Delta Street in a move that, I guess you could argue, gives the Ladner CoPS a marginally greater profile. The rest of the building will be used for storage and a yet to be named civic service. The museum vacated in 2016 and plans for that move were in place well before that date, so Delta has had ample time to figure out what to do with the building yet a chunk of it is acting as an expensive storage locker. I’m not trying to knock those over at city hall but rather highlight the challenges that exist when it comes to preserving pieces of our past. They’re lovely to look at but to justify pouring in the necessary dollars they must be functional, whether that’s for public or private purposes. Delta is slowly taking steps to help in that regard, including creating a fund that owners of heritage buildings can tap into to finance preservation projects. It’s imperative we don’t let our past wither away, but efforts to save these majestic structures won’t ultimately work unless there’s a vision for their use in a new century.

Protect neighbourhoods and keep prices down in process

or quite some time we’ve seen and heard politicians of every stripe going on and on in the media about the affordability crisis for homes in and around Vancouver. So after months, maybe years, of discussion they decide to levy a tax on foreign buyers, the exact same solution they used to stop people from smoking and in an effort to get people out of their cars. It seems they think increasing taxes is the ultimate fix to shift public opinion, but what they don’t take into account is that if very rich people want to come to Vancouver, voted one of the best cities in the world, where they can live in a safe and secure environment for their families, do politicians really believe that taxing them a few thousand dollars is going to change anything? I believe there is another way to at least slow down this affordability crisis and at the same time improve things for people in existing neighbourhoods. The Optimist carries on a regular basis numerous ads from the City of Delta announcing that a developer is requesting rezoning or variance for a property in an existing neighbourhood. As soon as this happens the affected neighbourhood has to mobilize to oppose the effects this will

Community Comment GREG HOOVER

have, taking time out of their lives to oppose someone who does not reside in the neighbourhood and has no motive for requesting these changes except to make money. Because these applications for variance seem to be accepted so readily by city hall it means at any one time there are numerous groups fighting against changes to their neighbourhoods which I believe is the root cause for much of the affordability crisis. What happens: • An older house needing some TLC is up for sale. A young family that could afford it and spend a few years fixing it up can’t compete against the developer who can afford to purchase this house and the one next door. After rezoning and numerous variances he makes three lots out of two

and builds three homes on the high end of the market. • So the young family can’t buy into the market, the new houses are completely out of place in the neighbourhood and now taxes begin to rise and street parking becomes a problem. • It is happening all over and after the developer picks up his shovel and leaves, the neighbourhood has to deal with what he has left for decades. The solution is easy and already exists. We have an Official Community Plan so why is it negotiable? Why do people, who don’t live in the neighbourhood, have the right to change the rules when they buy a property? For most people, buying a home is the largest investment of their lives and governments should be protecting the right of those existing taxpayers rather than trying to accommodate the whim of every developer. Please don’t write and tell me about improving density — it’s a very big province — or the argument about updating our stock of housing — nobody goes to Europe to look at new houses. Water seepage at tunnel not harmful

Editor: Re: Why all the water at both ends of the tunnel?, letter to the editor, Feb. 28 On behalf of Mayor Lois Jackson, I would like to thank F. Gray for writing and sharing concerns regarding water seepage in the George Massey Tunnel. The enquiry was passed along to our director of engineering who provided the following explanation from the B.C. Ministry

of Transportation and Infrastructure in relation to a previous enquiry: “The tunnel is inspected on a yearly basis by our bridge area manager and regional bridge inspection team, further, our maintenance contractor completes daily patrol of the highways and tunnels. During these inspections and patrol, issues are identified and brought forward for review. This particular concern that

Not fair residents have to endure that stench

Editor: I am a Tsawwassen resident concerned about the operation of EnviroSmart Organics and the resulting air pollution. The strong odours from this facility affect residents of Ladner, on occasion Tsawwassen and, in a more acute way, East Ladner. I cannot imagine living in East Ladner and breathing in the stench from the Enviro-Smart facility. It is more than remarkable that a company can start up a composting operation that destroys the quality of life for hundreds of residents, exposes them to possible health hazards and devastates the value of their homes. Recently the company announced that despite hundreds of complaints from Delta residents it would begin accepting the organic waste from thousands of residences in Richmond.

At a presentation to Delta council, Ray Robb from Metro Vancouver said the company that started the composting operation had not applied for permits and that his agency had “cajoled” the company into applying, although this was “resisted.” Robb also stated the application process finally underway would take several months and it was of critical importance it should be “fair.” Fairness? Really? What about fairness for the residents regularly subjected to the stench? Do the residents of Delta not have the fundamental right to breathe clean air? I think it is obvious to any reasonable person that Enviro-Smart should be shut down immediately until possible health hazards are assessed and proper environmental safeguards are put in place. J.K. Nybo

Donate bread card to food bank

Editor: Just a thought: If you have applied to receive a Loblaws $25 “bread gate” card, why not activate it and then donate it to the local food bank? I am sure they would welcome the donation. I was at the South Delta Food Bank today donating mine and I thought the cupboard looked a little bare. The food bank is located at 5545 Ladner Trunk Rd. Douglas Whitmore

you brought forward was identified through our routine inspection and is not considered to be harmful to the functionality of the tunnel. “The water that you have noticed is generally ground water that has been captured in the soil like a sponge and is slowly being released and entering through the entrance and exit. By way of design, this will occur from time to time in a tunnel, and

that is probably why you noticed water inside on a dry day. To help mitigate this, there are a series of pumps and drains inside the tunnel that will remove the water from the inside and direct it outwards. “The review was initiated in August 2013 to determine a solution to this issue. As previous mentioned, at this time ministry staff is working with the consultants to determine a feasible solution.”

I trust this answers your enquiry. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact: Thomas Chhun, operations managerMetro Vancouver Lower Mainland District Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, at 604-5272242 or Thomas.Chhun@ gov.bc.ca. Dona Packer Executive Assistant to the Mayor City of Delta

Tennis players are also voters

Editor: It’s a shame the City of Delta believes a casino contributes more to the community than a tennis facility. Delta would rather have people mindlessly sitting on their butts stuffing slots so the city can collect its paltry casino revenue than have community members participate in a healthy activity such as tennis. I have been a member of the tennis community in South Delta since 2002 and a member of the Town & Country Tennis Club for the last 10 years where I’ve played in the bubble every year from September to March. I belong to a membership of several hundred players who rely on the bubble for our inside ten-

nis during the fall and winter months. There are lots of groups of tennis players who have block bookings, playing once, twice or three times a week, getting great exercise, enjoying great comradeship and keeping us all healthy, thereby reducing the load on our already overloaded health care system. Why is it that all the surrounding cities provide indoor tennis facilities for their citizens, but not Delta? Shame on you, Delta. Delta seems to think a bunch of rundown outside courts counts as providing tennis in Delta. It doesn’t. I have to assume nobody on Delta council or in the parks and recreation department is

remotely interested in tennis. I’d like to see Delta reject the casino application. Remember this is an election year and all the Delta tennis players and their families will remember who voted for and against this proposal. So councillors, give some careful thought to this matter because we will remember how you voted. However, if the casino is approved and the T&C is torn down, Delta should be obliged to build a new four-court indoor tennis facility in a central location. Delta should provide the land and since Gateway will be profiting from the casino, it should provide the funding. Richard Heath

Editor: Leadership from Delta on the Birds and Biodiversity Strategy is an example for other levels of government The abundance and diversity of birds found on the Fraser delta make it Canada’s foremost bird habitat and the region has been globally recognized as an Important Bird and Biodiversity Area. The Fraser delta is a busy and congested place with world-class wildlife habitat occurring in the same neighbourhood as B.C.’s best agricultural lands as well as Canada’s main trade gateway to Asia. Amidst this dynamic landscape, Delta has released a strategy that

attempts to find benefits for all of those reliant on the richness of the Fraser. In approving the Bird and Biodiversity Strategy on Monday, the City of Delta has demonstrated outstanding leadership. Let’s hope Delta MP Carla Qualtrough takes notice of this local leadership and brings forth ideas about how the federal government can amplify the local efforts to protect our biodiversity from the threats of urban development, port expansion, intensive agriculture, invasive species and climate change-driven coastal squeeze identified in Delta’s Bird and Biodiversity Strategy. With thousands of the

world’s bird experts due to arrive in Vancouver next summer as part of the International Ornithological Congress, the community of Delta can now point to clear actions being taken to identify, protect and enhance birds and biodiversity in this internationally Important Bird Area. Bird Studies Canada looks forward to ongoing discussions with Delta and other willing parties about how we can all contribute ideas and actions that steer the Fraser delta back towards a sustainable future. James Casey Fraser Estuary Program Manager Bird Studies Canada

Moral obligation

Editor: Although considerable work is still being done, the Port of Vancouver has come under serious criticism from Environment Canada and Climate Change regarding what mitigating measures have been proposed to protect migratory birds that feed on biofilm at Roberts Bank during their migration. The federal agency maintains there is insufficient science-based information to support the proponent’s findings that the project would not adversely impact intertidal biofilm and, consequently, migratory shorebirds. In other words, the impact of biofilm damage could be permanent, irreversible and continuous. The environmental case against Terminal 2 is irrefutable and if allowed to proceed this could endanger a whole species of wildlife. As we know, species throughout the world are declining at an alarming rate and Canada is not exempt. The Port of Vancouver has a moral obligation to stand up, be counted, be conscious of this threat and stop this unnecessary project. Rod Asher

Have you ever experienced seasons when the moments, days and weeks seemed to slip away without noticing? If we are honest, most of us will say yes. Maybe we were consumed by the busyness of everyday routines or by a difficult season when merely staying alive seemed like a challenge. Regardless, we often look back on these seasons with a great sense of regret and the feeling that moments were wasted. Time was wasted. The book of Psalms (a great place to start when you come to realize the shortfalls of our humanity and want to refocus on God) gives voice and expression to this tenden-

cy in a prayer by Moses. Moses asks God to “arrest” his impulse to simply just drift through the days. “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” Psalm 90:12

I cannot begin to imagine the pain and the sorrow the parents that lost their children in the shooting at the Florida high school are experiencing. But I am convinced every single one of them would give anything to have just a few more moments. Do not take the time you have for granted — no matter the season. Be thankful, enjoy life, love people and allow God to show you how much He loves you. Let us number the days, tune our ears heavenward and determine that this season will not slip away. That we might have our eyes wide open to see that the Lord is present and active.

outh Delta teens Shelby Satterthwaite and Sean Cuevas will take to the stage next week in Vancouver as part of an all-youth cast in Seven Minutes in Heaven. The Eternal Theatre Collective production, set in 1995 and written

by Steven Levenson, is described as a “startlingly accurate look into the minds of teenagers.” Tsawwassen’s Satterthwaite, 18, says the play is very much a coming of age story and has a nostalgic feel. She plays the role of Margot, a character who just wants everyone to get along. “I really like it. It’s a lot

of fun,” she says. The South Delta Secondary grad performed in the high school’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie last year and was also part of the cast of Delta Youth Theatre’s Annie. Satterthwaite says she enjoys theatre since she’s able to “tell a story that means something to me or other people” and likes

entertaining others. Ladner’s Cuevas, 16, will be making his debut on a professional stage. “It’s an awesome learning experience,” he says, noting the show has an “awesome” cast and crew. He plays Derek, a character who wants to be cool and fit in but is “doing things that are a little too grown up for him.” The play is very funny

and has lots of good jokes, he says. Every Eternal Theatre Collective production is produced and performed by youth aged 13 to 25. The play runs from March 7 to 10 at 7:30 p.m. at Studio 16, 1555 W. 7th Ave., Vancouver. Tickets are either $13 (youth 25 and under) or $20 and are available at www.eternaltheatre.com.

54-40 continues rolling with Keep On Walking Iconic Canadian band 54-40 rolls into Ladner tomorrow night for a sold-out show at Genesis Theatre with a new album in tow. Keep On Walking features 11 original songs and is described as the group’s “most eclectic, propulsive, flat-out excellent album” in a press release. The album includes tracks ranging from rock anthem single Sucker For Your Love, which is “propelled by electrifying lead

guitar, thundering bass, and soaring ‘Hey! Hey!’ chants,” to the “breathtakingly intimate, candlelit ballad Hold My Kiss.” 54-40 includes singer/ guitarist Neil Osborne, bassist Brad Merritt, drummer Matt Johnson and guitarist Dave Genn. Osborne and Merritt are both South Delta Secondary graduates. “This record already feels like a success to me,” Osborne says. “The fact that we created it while

really enjoying playing together is an accomplishment, and why Brad and I started the band in the first place.” The band has been together for nearly four decades and has numerous hit songs like Baby Ran, I Go Blind and Ocean Pearl to its credit. The group was recently inducted into the Halls of Fame of the Independent Music Awards and the Canadian Music and Broadcast Industry Awards.

Kids become ninja warriors in special program at gym club

Art for Wellness classes

SUBMITTED PHOTO

Instructor and art therapist Teresa Massel gave a presentation last month on art therapy benefits and the upcoming Art for Wellness classes at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. The event was attended by about 20 people who enjoyed painting art on canvas and socializing. No art skills are necessary for Art for Wellness classes, starting weekly in April. Classes will be Tuesdays, after school for youth and in the evening for adults. Each class will have a theme, and people can register for one, two or the entire series of 10 classes. Register online at https://deltareg.ca.

Parents can stop worrying about their kids jumping over furniture and climbing the walls as Delta Gymnastics is bringing back its Ninja Warrior Night on Tuesday, March 20. Ninja warrior competitions have a rich history and their popularity has exploded worldwide. Mike Hood, Delta Gymnastics’ men’s competitive program director, is always excited about using the gym in a different way. “We have created obstacles and strategically placed them to be versatile, challenging and fun,” says Hood. “The course appeals to everybody’s instinct to run, climb and go through things. We invite all children and youth in our community to give it a try.” Some of the popular stations include cool climbing walls, wall run up and wipe out zone in the foam pit. The night starts with a warm up, course demo,

There will be a winner for every age category. “Gymnastics-based conditioning is key to working through the Ninja obstacles, so the Ninja Warrior Night delivers a wide range of fast, fun filled yet effective conditioning circuits that gives kids the

opportunity to learn new skills in a friendly competitive environment,” says Hood. Grip strength, speed, agility, balance, swinging and tumbling are all components of Ninja Warrior Night. It also gives kids the chance to meet new friends. The competition is bro-

ken down by age: Dragon Warriors (ages five and six) compete from 3:30 to 5 p.m., Tiger Warriors (ages seven to nine) compete from 5 to 6:30 p.m. and Eagle Warriors (ages 10 and up) compete from 6:30 to 8 p.m. For more information, visit www.deltagymnastics. com.

A solid Delta contingent helped Vancouver Coastal capture ringette gold at the B.C. Winter Games in Kamloops thanks to a thrilling win over Fraser River. The local players included (left to right) Alexandra Zed, Makayla Anderson, Abbi Krzysztofik, Keeley Williams and Madison Maichin, along with head coach Lisa Cadeau.

Golden weekend in Kamloops Impressive medal haul for Delta’s contingent of athletes at B.C. Winter Games It was an impressive haul in Kamloops for the Delta contingent at the B.C. Winter Games. Delta Gymnastics made quite the impression — winning 11 medals. The group was led by Makenzie Grant capturing the JO 8 allaround gold. It was one of four medals for her. Teammate Ava Lappin added three, including gold in vault. Jordan Hemrich was also a multi-medal winner. In archery, Adam Deane brought home two medals, while Jeff Hayes was a member of the gold medal winning Special Olympics basketball team. Delta also had a big part in the VancouverCoastal (Zone 5) team reaching the top of the podium in ringette. The roster featured five Delta players — Alexandra Zed, Makayla Anderson, Madison Maichin, Keeley Williams and Abbi Krysztofik. The team was also coached by Lisa Cadeau. The Zone 5 team completed preliminary play with a perfect 3-0 record, allowing just six goals. It was then a 7-2 win over Zone 2 (Fraser Valley) in a well-played, competitive semi-final. The gold medal battle against Zone 4 (Fraser River) featured some of the best ringette players in the Lower Mainland and it did not disappoint with a high level of skill, effort and tactics demonstrated by both teams. It was also a showdown of two great goaltenders — Zone 5’s Anderson and Jaydie Sawada for Zone 4. Zed erased an early Zone 4 lead on a great rush from her defensive position. Zone 5 came out of the first half-intermission determined, and with some great ring movement and team play, got goals by Keeley Williams and Yvonne Orr in the opening two

Makenzie Grant is congratulated by Delta Gymnastics coach Kristina Sharp. She won four medals at last weekend’s B.C. Winter Games in Kamloops. minutes of the half for a a 3-2 lead. However, Zone 4 tied the score on a shorthanded goal with just over 10 minutes left to set up what was a great finish. The teams continued to match chances until Pyper White scored on a beautiful shot to the top left corner for what proved to be the golden goal. The final seven minutes were intense and loud in the packed McArther Island Sport and Event Centre but Zone 5 prevailed 4-3. “It was an absolute privilege to be able

to coach these 17 athletes,” said Cadeau. “With only six practices prior to attending the Games, you always wonder how they will come together and perform as a team. “There is always the unknown, such as how each player reacts to the environment of an event of this magnitude, to sleeping in a dormitory format and the early mornings and long days. Therefore, coming home with a gold medal makes it even more special. I am so proud of everyone on this team.” Players now return to their respective association teams to complete their seasons at provincials while others will re-join their Lower Mainland Ringette League AA Thunder teams. The U14 AA Thunder are off to the Western Canadian Championships as Team BC in Saskatoon, March 21-25 and players on the U16AA Thunder, also coached by Cadeau, will represent Team BC at the Canadian Ringette Championships in Winnipeg, April 7-14. Here’s a complete list of the Delta medal winners in Kamloops:

Gymnastics Makenzie Grant: JO 8 women’s all-around (gold), JO 8 floor (silver), vault (gold), JO 7&8 Team (silver). Ava Lappin: JO7 women’s vault (gold), uneven bars (bronze), JO 7&8 Team (silver). Lauren Thrale: JO 7&8 Team (silver). Hunter Woodhead: Level 3 Men parallel bars (bronze). Jordan Hemrich: Level 3 Men rings (bronze). Level 3 Men Team (silver). Special Olympics Basketball Jeff Hayes: (gold). Archery Adam Deane: 2 Day aggregate boys recurve (silver), match play boys recurve (bronze). Ringette Alexandra Zed, Madison Maichin, Keeley Williams and Abbi Krysztofik (gold). 3 March World Wildlife Day
