Snow hits Tsawwassen hard Roads so bad that TransLink had five bus routes only go as far as Ladner IAN JACQUES
i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m
Old Man Winter dealt South Delta a blow Wednesday as snow created a traffic nightmare for the afternoon commute. By 4:30 p.m. the Delta Police Department had received multiple accident reports on routes to and from Tsawwassen. DPD closed Highway 17A northbound at Highway 17 at 5 p.m. when an unoccupied school bus slid into a barrier. Arthur Drive was also shut down in both directions near Deltaport Way for approximately two hours until it could be sanded. “By early evening police had 14 snow-related calls, with numerous collisions and reports of vehicles being spun out,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Cris Leykauf. “To deal with the increase in calls and to assist with traffic issues, extra police officers were on shift.” She said most of the closed roads were reopened by 7:30 p.m. Delta’s director of engineering Steven Lan said crews did their best to keep roads cleared, but a significant amount of snow in a short time hampered their efforts. “We certainly had our trucks out and had our primary roads pretreated earlier in the day,

Tsawwassen’s 56th Street was covered Wednesday afternoon as heavier than anticipated snow blanketed the community. but when it hit, it hit so hard, there was quite a bit of snow,” said Lan. “We still had our trucks out there clearing, but as the roadways became really congested our ability to get our trucks from our salt shed back into Tsawwassen took more time. We were out there all night and we are still out there [Thursday morning] clearing all the primary routes.” Lan said crews will be working 24/7 with more snow in the weekend forecast.
“People need to drive slowly during this period of time and be careful. Our crews will be out there – you will see them,” he said. Transit was also impacted as TransLink was forced to shut down several routes during the afternoon commute. “Five routes were only running as far as the Ladner exchange — the 601, 602, 603, 604 and the C-89,” said TransLink spokesperson Jill Drews. “Then the 620 was still running to the ferry terminal, but we had to divert
it to Highway 99 and Highway 17 due to slippery conditions and an accident.” Drews said TransLink was in constant communication with the City of Delta to try and keep the routes clear. “It’s something we do whenever there is inclement weather — we work very closely with municipalities and we relay to them which routes are causing trouble for us and they do the best they can to get a crew out and clear the area, which is what we
did last night,” she said. “Once city crews got out there, I think it was around 8 p.m. when we had all the routes running normally again. It was a challenging situation — crashes on the road and slippery sections. We apologize to our customers, but we have to ensure we have safe conditions for everyone.” More snow is in the forecast for Friday. Saturday is expected to be sunny and cold with the chance of more snow mixed with rain on Sunday.
‘People’s budget’ leaves questions in Delta SANDOR GYARMATI

The NDP government’s first budget has been touted as a “people’s budget” but it remains to be seen how much it will help the people of Delta. Finance Minister Carole James unveiled a series of measures Tuesday aimed at curbing real estate speculation as well as hundreds of millions in spending on housing, childcare, health care and education in addition to new taxes. She said a budget is about people and the kind of communities we want as well as the kind of future we desire. Delta South Liberal
MLA Ian Paton was quick to dismiss the budget, pointing out the government appears to have abandoned addressing gridlock at the George Massey Tunnel. Also critical of various points in the budget, he said it shows the NDP’s disregard for the 80,000 commuters a day who travel the corridor. Last September, the new Green-backed minority government suspended work on the Liberals’ $3.5-billion bridge project pending a technical review, which is to be completed this spring. The government last week announced funding for the Pattullo Bridge

When it comes to affordable housing, the budget outlines a 10-year plan to provide 114,000 affordable homes. How many of those units could be constructed in Delta isn’t clear. Delta is going to begin work on its own housing action plan later this year.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) Delta Hospice Society is a communitybased organization that exists to help individuals and their families experiencing a life-threatening diagnosis, advanced illness or bereavement, live with comfort, meaning, dignity and hope. Delta Hospice Society has expanded since its inception in 1991 to include the Harold & Veronica Savage Centre for Supportive Care and the Irene Thomas Hospice. The Delta Hospice Society is comprised of a Policy Governance Board, staff, 280 volunteers and a care team, with 70 permanent and casual staff. Recently, there has been discussion in the media regarding the implementation of MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) by Fraser Health in hospice palliative care facilities. In British Columbia, medical assistance in dying occurs when an authorized doctor or nurse practitioner provides or administers medication that intentionally brings about a person’s death, at that person’s request. This procedure is only available to patients who both seek it and meet eligibility requirements defined by Canadian Laws.
this premise is foundational, there are some important factors to consider with the implementation of MAiD. While our current constitution does not specifically exclude MAiD, it does include language and terminology which reflects an approach to palliative care that “intends neither to hasten or postpone death”. (World Health Organization Definition of Palliative Care) Some might perceive this as conflicting with the implementation of MAiD in a hospice setting. When the Delta Hospice Society’s constitution was created in 1991, MAiD was still considered a criminal act in Canada, however, amendments to our constitution can be proposed and voted upon by DHS members at an Annual General Meeting. In addition to legal considerations, there are also possible financial implications as Fraser Health is a source of funding for Delta Hospice Society.
As a community-based organization, the Delta Hospice Society Board has a responsibility to represent the interests of our stakeholders on this important issue. As such, in the coming weeks and months, we will be reaching out to solicit feedback from As with any end of life decisions, the Delta Delta community members as well as DHS Hospice Board of Directors recognizes volunteers and staff on the topic of MAiD, that the topic of MAiD is one that is deeply as it relates to the Delta Hospice Society. personal and complex. Enhancements for Grauer Park are getting back on track. Delta council recently gave the go-ahead for a new memorandum of understanding between the city, the Rotary Club of Tsawwassen and the Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club for what could be $255,000 worth of improvements. Those projects include a new bike pump track at the northeast corner of the park, a playground next to the South Delta Recreation Centre and lighting for the skateboard park. In 2015, council approved another memorandum with the Lions Club for all three projects whereby the club would fundraise for the entire amount, which was estimated at $210,000 at the time. A recent report to coun-
cil notes the Lions have finished several other community initiatives involving fundraising and volunteerism and are now turning their attention to Grauer Park, acknowledging the projects will involve significant time and effort to complete. The costs since the original memorandum have also increased. Last year, Rotary entered the picture, approaching the city and the Lions to determine if there was interest for Rotary involvement. Those discussions resulted in a new deal in which Delta has agreed to contribute $62,500 of municipal funding for the skateboard lighting, while the two clubs contribute a combined equal amount for the $125,000 project. After that, they would collectively raise 50 per cent toward the cost of the other two projects. The report to coun-

Who knew what an outcry a misplaced apostrophe could have? Ladner resident Randy Anderson-Fennell wrote to the Optimist recently about his dismay that two signs on the way to Deas Island Regional Park incorrectly added an apostrophe to the park’s namesake, John Sullivan Deas. The signs spelled his name Dea’s. The issue had been a concern for him and his wife, former Optimist journalist Corry AndersonFennell, for about three

Construction company proud of new centre
Wales McLelland Construction president Doug Scott and his wife Jane recently paid a visit to the Reach Child and Youth Development Society’s new home in Ladner. Wales McLelland is responsible for building the Lois E. Jackson Kinsmen Centre for Children through a design build approach. Wales McLelland also contributed $121,000 to the Building for Children Together campaign that saw the City of Delta and all levels of government, socially responsible businesses, community organizations and individuals come together in support
of the $5.7-million project. “We are proud of having the opportunity to assist Reach in attaining their vision of a new centre to support the families in need,” said Scott. “It has been a pleasure to meet and work with Renie (Reach executive director D’Aquila) and her associates. Their passion, as with that of my wife Jane, to help children with special needs is infectious and rewarding.” According to D’Aquila, Wales McLelland has done a tremendous job of constructing a top quality building while keeping costs under control. “They have even helped
us to generate another $90,000 through donations made by their sub trades working on the building,” said D’Aquila. The official opening of the three-storey, 20,000-square-foot centre adjacent to the Ladner Pioneer Library on 47th Avenue is set for tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. The new building will allow Reach to, over time, double the number of children with special needs supported each year. To date, the Reach Foundation has raised $5.5 million but another $200,000 is still needed to complete the project funding.

Efforts to celebrate Delta’s history were recognized Monday night as Delta presented a pair of Friend of Heritage awards. As part of its Heritage Week celebrations, Mayor Lois Jackson presented the awards to Grace Yan, librarian from Gibson Elementary, and representatives from the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust. According to Delta, the Heritage Advisory Commission decided not to choose a Heritage
Award of Merit winner this year. Yan was nominated for her innovative methods of bringing history into the classroom. She has brought in outreach kits on various historical topics from the War Museum in Ottawa, the Royal BC Museum and the Delta Museum and has introduced her classes to indigenous culture through hands-on activities. She has also invited various speakers to talk to students and started Gibson’s Heritage Fair five years ago.

“I feel a lot of educators actually deserve this award because there are many teachers out there who promote heritage,” said Yan. “Our PAC president recognizes my work so she wrote in and nominated me. I have a passion for everything, so it’s not just heritage. I just do things with passion.” Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, has worked to preserve Delta’s agricultural and natural heritage. The organization was established in 1993 by
community members with an interest in conserving agricultural and wildlife resources and today it promotes the preservation of more than 1,500 hectares of farmland and wildlife habitat through cooperative stewardship with local farmers. “On behalf of the Delta Farmland and Wildlife Trust, we’d like to thank the City of Delta for the recognition of our organization. Delta has been a strong supporter and we hope to maintain that relationship for many years ahead,” said program manager Drew Bodnar.

ou can’t help but love a sporting event that can make you feel patriotic and blissfully ignorant at the same time. The Winter Olympics have been must-see viewing for the past two weeks, bringing a host of sports to our TV screens we only watch once every four years, yet despite this glaring unfamiliarity I can’t help but get captivated by the competition and the spectacle. It doesn’t matter that I can’t tell the difference between a triple toe loop and a triple Axel, if there’s a Canadian figure skater on the ice, and given the depth of our team there always is, I’m on the couch cheering them on. The same, both in terms of ignorance and admiration, goes for everything from freestyle halfpipe to snowboard slopestyle. Most sports employ a scoreboard or a timer so it’s easy for even the casual fan to figure out the winner, but in a number of those contested at the Winter Olympics, that’s not the case, forcing ignoramuses like myself to watch — and wait. It’s a different feeling, but in some ways it doubles the excitement as not only do I get to view the performance, but I also get the anticipation of waiting for the judges to tell me if it was any good. And I need that because unless someone ends up on their butt, I have a hard time telling. I was watching moguls the other day when the commentator, a former Olympian, exclaimed, “Whoa, he sure was loose on that run,” despite the fact it looked remarkably similar to the previous run and the one before that. Heck, things look so much alike I suspect you could send the same competitor down the mountain time after time and I wouldn’t be any the wiser. Yet it doesn’t matter that I don’t grasp the subtle nuances of these sports because these are the Olympics and it’s all about supporting the home team. From skeleton to snowboarding to speed skating, if there’s a Canadian in the lineup, it’s definitely worth watching. And if they’re in contention for a medal, well, it doesn’t get any better than that. By weekend’s end, just as we’re getting familiar with twizzles and truck drivers and tee lines, we’ll have to say goodbye to them for another four years, but the nice part of it all is that we can do so with big patriotic smiles on our faces.
Florida shooting a reminder of impacts of mental illness
A
few weeks ago I wrote about nutrition, and well being in general, and their relationship to mental health. Unfortunately, I am compelled to write about mental illness again. No, mental health issues are not going to be solved by feeding carrots to kids in an outside environment. It is a start but there are a host of factors that contribute to the disease as I am sure we all understand. Last week’s Valentine’s Day massacre in Florida has brought mental health issues to the forefront yet again. The shooter, Nikolas Cruz, suffered from depression and attention deficit disorder and had encountered several life-altering events in his young life. These issues are obviously no excuse for the horrific acts he perpetrated, but they are certainly a reminder of the social impacts of mental illness. And then there are guns. If you are an American (or not), how is it that you can walk down the street to your local firearms store and buy an assault rifle designed to kill people, not deer or turkeys, with minimal background checks? As long as your money is green, you are good to go. Gun makers are proud of their advances in technology just like any innovator but it is sad there is
Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER
such an appetite to savour these advances, particularly in the United States where gun violence has clearly become an issue of national security. Yet lawmakers rely on the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms to allow the killing orgy that is occurring with our best friends and allies due south. On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump invited kids and parents from the Parkland, Sandy Hook and Columbine shootings to the White House to talk about the tragedies. From all accounts in the media, it was a raw exchange, not contrived or staged, which is a good thing, and I think that at least portrays what a future dialogue in Congress might look like. Immediately after the shooting, however, the president blamed
mental illness rather than gun use. I am not going to buy into this directly but I will suggest the combination is certainly lethal. We need to fix both. In the Wednesday meeting, Trump suggested that arming educators in the school might be a solution to school gun violence. His thought is to train 20 per cent of the teachers how to use a gun to kill would-be mass murderers. They would be issued with conceal and carry licences which would enable them to have a loaded pistol on them at all times in the classroom. Trump argues that schools are a no-kill zone, meaning that mass murders target schools because they are afraid to be shot back at. I doubt this is the case. There was an eloquent 15-yearold at the meeting who has not been a part of a school system that was void of shooter drills in his lifetime. A sad statement indeed. There is a growing disdain for the hypocrisy in the United States and its role as world protector. We should take pause and appreciate that we live where we do. Hospice has expertise to serve all of its patients
Editor: Re: Logic cuts both ways, Murphy’s Law, Feb. 16 Thank you for bringing up reasonable access in your column about MAiD and Delta Hospice. You are right, Delta Hospital is not fully resourced; some specialized medical services are not readily available, likely due to a lack of infrastructure and redundancy. In my opinion, such is not the case in the issue of MAiD and Delta Hospice. Public funds support Delta Hospice where sophisticated infrastructure and expert resources for individu-
als who are dying and for their grieving families do exist. While this is an issue of reasonable access to care, as you stated, it’s also more than that. This is also a legal issue of human rights. No one is “pushing” anyone to use MAiD in end of life care whether this medical service is available or not. With the provision of access to MAiD by Delta Hospice, the right to choose to not end your life with MAiD remains intact, regardless of the choice of others. Your legal right to die, in your “home” as you wish,
is upheld. Your human right upheld. However, should Delta Hospice continue to withhold reasonable access to MAiD, those who choose to have MAiD and meet the medical/legal requirements, will be denied their legal right to die, as they wish in their “home.” Their human right denied. Come on Delta Hospice, uphold the rights of all. You have the expertise, resources and infrastructure to meet the needs of all patients in this community, without judgement. Don’t you want to do that? Debra Connell
Wait on casino until money Build a bridge Editor: laundering is sorted out Re: Looking longingly Editor: I was impressed by the sincerity and thoroughness of the answers given to me by the various representatives of the casino developers, the lottery corporation, and parks and recreation departments. However, the recent report in the Vancouver Sun indicates the agency responsible for ensuring criminals do not launder money is incapable of doing so. We should wait on a Delta casino until this is sorted out. Secondly, I urge all Delta citizens to inspect the River Rock Casino Resort if they have not already done so. How many patrons resemble the middle class, fun-loving young things out for a fling which constantly appear in the ads? Heather Fayers
Casino will be good for Delta
Editor: I used to work for the proponent of the planned Delta casino. This industry and the amenity the facility contains will give Delta a unique experience and many jobs that all of Delta will benefit from. The money laundering is currently being addressed. The current faculty is tired; the new will be attractive. The jobs will produce many positive economic opportunities for retailers. Bob Kenward
Wine drinkers called to action Editor:
Re: Wine war hits Westham, Feb. 9 The current trade dispute between Alberta and B.C. is untenable. I am proposing and urging every responsible wine drinker in B.C. to make an offer to buy five cases of their favourite B.C. wine at pre-tax wholesale prices. This is essentially the price the wine enters other provinces. It’s the responsible thing to do and important for us to be good citizens. Bohdan Zabolotniuk

at Auckland’s tunnel system, letter to the editor, Feb. 9 Firstly, as New Zealand is a rocky outcropping, the geological structure is readily practical to tunnel. Also, the Fraser River is not 2.4 kilometres wide, so a bridge is the practical solution. For those opponents fearing this bridge would be built on silt and therefore dangerous, then think about staying off the Alex Fraser, Port Mann, SkyTrain and Golden Ears bridges as well. Most have support pillars on concrete/rock and gravel pads down through silt. The new bridge construction includes widening of Highway 99, replacing the two-lane overpass for Highway 10 and, for Richmond mayor and council, eliminating the messy parking lot (oops intersection) of Steveston Highway and No. 5 Road. To our esteemed party in power: enough of the studies, get going on the bridge construction. Tom Moore

The Boundary Bay Park Association is extending an invitation to community members to visit the historic Cammidge House this Sunday to celebrate Heritage Day. Since 1973 Canadians from coast to coast have recognized Heritage Day on the third Monday in February with the view of promoting and celebrating Canada’s national heritage. Geof Hacker says this year the National Trust of Canada has selected a theme of “Heritage stands the test of time” and with that in mind static displays have been prepared by the volunteers of the Boundary Bay Park Association recapping the basic history of Delta and

Say hello to Carrie
Carrie is a darling one year old female pitbull mix around 55lbs that we saved from the San Bernadino Animal shelter in California. She LOVES people, any age, race or creed. She can get excited when she first meets you and can be jumpy, so should spend some time working on impulse control before being considered for a home with small children. She did amazing in play groups at the shelter, but gets very excited meeting other dogs, and needs to work on manners and space and accepting their cues when they have said they have had enough. She is perfectly crate trained and totally house broken and good on leash with the right equipment, at this time we are using a face halti. Carrie is quite a lazy girl! After a decent daily walk, she is all about snoring on the couch! She will need her new family to continue her training, mainly on focus and direction on walks and meeting other dogs. Otherwise she is already on the path to be a fantastic breed ambassador! As with all our dogs, she is spayed and up to date on all shots and vaccines. If you are interested in this sweet girl, please email us at pbandchi@gmail.com or find our foster information and applications on our website at pbandchi.com

Planning for the Future workshop to begin medical, legal and financial conversations
Planning ahead before a health crisis is something all of us should do, yet less than 50 per cent of Canadians have had conversations with their family and friends and even less have spoken with their doctor. Many people don’t know where to begin while others are unaware of the importance. On Saturday, March 10, the Parish Health team at Ladner United Church, in partnership with Deltassist
and the Delta Seniors’ Planning Team, will be hosting a day-long workshop called Planning for the Future. The workshop will cover important information about medical, legal and financial decision making and advance care planning. Keynote speaker in the morning will be Cari Hoffmann, project coordinator for advance care planning for Fraser Health. During the lunch hour
there will be an opportunity for participants to view displays by community groups such as Delta Hospice, Deltassist, Delta Seniors Planning Team, Delta Police Department, Delta’s seniors’ centres and UVic Centre on Aging. In the afternoon, local lawyer Lisa Eastwood will be talking about legal and financial decision making, covering topics such as wills, probate and power of attorney. This
will be followed by a panel discussion with opportunity to ask questions from the experts, including financial advisor Vicki Chatterly. Advance registration for the free workshop is required. To register, call the church office at 604946-6254. The workshop will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Ladner United Church, 4960–48th Ave. A light lunch will be provided.

High school gets musical
South Delta Secondary to stage Disney favourite at Equinox Theatre next week DAVE WILLIS

Students have long been asking Jennifer Harbott to perform Disney’s High School Musical and this was the year she gave in. “This was something they’d been bugging me for five years to do,” says South Delta Secondary’s drama teacher. The show was so popular it’s been double cast and crewed, she notes, describing the production as a “Disney-fied version of Grease.” Approximately 150 students and staff are involved in bringing the show to the Equinox Theatre stage, says Harbott, who’s the director and choreographer. The musical sees teenagers Troy and Gabriella meet at a karaoke night on vacation and then wind up going to the same school. Troy is torn between being a star athlete and singing with Gabriella in the school musical. “There are all of these cliques at this school and nobody crosses over. Nobody can be an athlete and a singer at the same time,” explains Harbott. The upcoming musical runs for about an hour

Grade 9 student Eric Timuss plays Troy in one of the casts. “This is my first year singing anything so I kind of relate to Troy in that way,” he says, adding he’s
having a lot of fun with the role. Laura Marenych, who’s in Grade 11, plays Sharpay Evans. She describes the character as a huge diva who’s aiming to be the star of the show. Marenych says playing the role is a “dream come
true” and that she grew up watching the High School Musical movies all the time. A lot of effort is going into the production, she says. “I’m really happy everybody has put so much work into it. Everybody
loves the show.” High School Musical: On Stage runs from Feb. 27 to March 3 at the Equinox Theatre at SDSS, 750-53rd St. Shows are at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, $10 for students/ seniors and $5 for kids five and under.
Tina Turner tribute at Genesis Theatre Luisa Marshall is bringing her Tina Turner tribute show to Ladner’s Genesis Theatre next Friday. The show will be a family affair for Marshall as she’ll be joined onstage by daughters Kimi (lead guitar/back-up vocals) and Zenia (vocals), sister Tota Mendez (vocals) and the “love of my life” Steve Marshall (drums). “Every second on stage with my family is spectacular, a high that lingers on for a long time. It’s a lot of fun, so inspiring and memorable,” she says. Marshall started performing as Turner, Known as the Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll, just for fun in 1995 after a fan suggestion and embraced the tribute artist role in 2000.
Tribute artists Jenni Doyle (performing as Shania Twain) and Bill Pantazis (performing as George Michael) will be special guests at the upcoming Ladner show. “It will be a magical evening of hit songs from Tina, Shania and George,” says Marshall. She adds her daughters will pay tribute to Irish rock band Cranberries lead singer Dolores O’Riordan, who unexpectedly passed away a month ago. The show is set for Friday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Genesis Theatre, 5005-45th Ave., Ladner. Tickets are $39.50. For tickets call 1-800-838-3006 or visit brownpapertickets. com.

Author’s struggles to fit in help him write first novel DANIEL FELDMAN
Optimist contributor
All of us have found it difficult to fit in at times. Local author David Hopkins wrote a novel related to his own personal struggles with following the crowd. The Sheltered Life of Betsy Parker is about a girl who experiences a rare allergic condition in which virtually nothing can touch her skin from a young age. These reactions cause Betsy to become ill, and even threaten her life. Betsy goes through her whole life sheltered, isolated from the world while trying to gain understanding, compassion and acceptance from society. Hopkins’ similar struggles inspired him to write the novel. “I have been involved in the naturist lifestyle since 2005 when I was 17 years old and I suffer from autism spectrum disorder which has made it difficult for me fit in with my
David Hopkins peers,” said Hopkins, a Delta Secondary graduate. “It was these two factors that inspired the idea about how difficult it would be for someone to fit into society who truly could never have any clothing on.” Hopkins feels literature and film never really display a human merely being naked and behaving just as casually as if that person were clothed. He said one of the purposes of the novel was to remind readers of the way we are all born: naked and completely unashamed in our nakedness. Hopkins wrote the first
draft of the novel over six weeks in the summer of 2014. He sought feedback from several friends and family as well as from local author Darren Groth. He published the first edition early in 2016, but even after that he saw room for improvements and added a chapter later that year. Hopkins has sold over 60 copies. His novel is in the Delta Secondary library and for sale at the Autism Centre in Richmond and on Amazon. Hopkins graduated from Delta Secondary in 2007. Since then, he’s gone on to obtain an associate of science degree at Langara College and is in his last semester of music at Kwantlen Polytechnic University in Langley. A viola player, he recently joined the West Coast Symphony. Daniel Feldman is a Delta Secondary student doing work experience at the Optimist.

Just for fun, I wondered about the scriptural references to snow. Many of them have to do with the “colour” of snow… “white as snow.” When Jesus appeared to his disciples, “His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow.” (Matt 28:3) Another reference is often made to those whose skin turned as white as snow with leprosy, (Numbers 12:10) “When the cloud went away from over the tent, Miriam had become leprous, as white as snow.” As for the white fluffy stuff, the Psalmest writes, “When the Almighty scattered kings there, snow fell on Zalmon.” (Psalm 68:14).
Minister’s Minute ELIZABETH NORTHCOTT
All Saints Anglican Church
I suppose that snow reminds us both of purity through its brightness, as well as the realities of the earth’s seasons — as she sheds her leaves and sleeps while the cold snow
covers the land. This is a season of the church’s year called “lent” — a time that lasts 40 days and commemorates Jesus’ time in the “wilderness.” This is a time to snuggle down to consider how it is that we are called to be the brightness and purity of living God’s will and at the same time to reflect on the ways in which we have neglected to be God’s light in the world and have harmed both the earth and God’s people. It’s more than just saying, “I’ll pray about it!” Lent is a time to reflect and then act — to fulfill God’s love of the earth and all God’s children. Or as one famous company says, “Just Do It.”

Devils off to Grade 8 provincials Promising girls basketball team finishes 3rd at Fraser Valley Championships

South Delta Sun Devils are officially back on the B.C. girls basketball map for the first time since 2005. The Sun Devils have been seeded third for next week’s provincial Grade 8 championships in South Surrey thanks to an outstanding run through the Fraser Valley playoffs. South Delta closed out the 32-team event Monday with a 32-24 win over No. 3 seed WA Fraser Hawks of Abbotsford in the third place game. Andie Assaly led a balanced attack with eight points. Makena Rutledge, Meagan Singh and Jane McDonald each had six. McDonald was also named to the tournament all-star team. It was back in 2005 when a group led by Laura Craig and Kira Carre closed out their high school careers with a third place finish at the B.C. “AAA” Championships. The five-year run included a provincial junior title two years earlier. Success has been hard to come by for the Tsawwassen school since, especially competing in the ultra-competitive Fraser Valley zone. However, this athletic group is off to a terrific start and ahead of schedule according to head coach Sharon Butler who is joined on the bench by another parent volunteer — Christine Young. All but one of their 13 players had initially worked with Butler in the South Delta Steve Nash club program. “It’s a special group that has come together so quickly. They are really team oriented and anything we ask of them they do,” explained Butler. “The energy and chemistry they have developed and the success they are having. “They are all in it now. We set a goal at the beginning of the year that we are going to be in the provincials by the time they are in Grade 10. They decided that’s not good enough. They wanted to be one of the top 16 teams in the province and look at where they are.” The Sun Devils have certainly benefitted from a challenging schedule that included a pair of

tough fourth quarter to slip past Holy Cross 33-29 in their opening game then began to roll. A 27-17 round of 16 win over Langley’s Yorkson Creek was followed by a 26-16 triumph against No. 4 Thomas Haney. The Devils then gave eventual champion Langley Christian all it could handle in a 36-31 semi-final loss despite playing without starting point guard Olivia Barber who was injured in the opening minutes of the quarter-final game. Butler says the opening round scare served notice for the rest of the championships. “From there we realized this is what it is. “You don’t have time, space and you have to think quickly. You really have to battle for everything and they just progressively got better,” she added. The rest of the team features: Brianna Jassman, Sophie Gower, Teila Noble, Kate McDonald, Heidi Leigh, Amy Jones and Amy Smith. South Delta opens play at provincials on Thursday against Sa’Hali of Kamloops.

Falcons Field Hockey celebrating 50th season MARK BOOTH
m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m
It’s a milestone season for a sports organization that has a rich history in this region. The Falcons Field Hockey Club is celebrating its 50th anniversary and will reflect on its decades of excellence with a special weekend in June. It was back in 1968 when Delta Sports Hall of Fame inductee Jurgen Lankau launched what was initially a boys only program. The response was impressive. The Falcons typically fielded 25 teams through to the early 1970s and quickly
earned a reputation as one of the top clubs in the country. Numerous Falcon players went to play for the senior men’s national team during those early years including Peter Motzek, Ralph Motzek, Steve Lewis, Brian Foxall, Brett Peterson, Kevin Brennan, Kirk Adams, Doug Preddy, Ross Rutledge, John Sacre, Mike Gunning, Guy Manwaring, Mike Muller and Dave Ancrum. More recently, Rob Short, Peter Short, Casey Ferguson, Mike Lee and Will Haering were just some of the players to wear Canadian colours. The Falcons eventually launched a competitive girls program, paving the way for the likes of Ann Harada and Ali Johnstone to play for
Canada. Today, Sara McManus, 24, is already one of the most capped players in the history of the women’s national team, having made her Canadian debut when she was just 18. Brendan Guraliuk and Rowan Childs were recently named to the U18 men’s national team that is headed to Mexico next month for a Pan Am qualifier. In total, the club has produced 47 players who have gone on to represent their country. A number of Falcon alumni having also taken their careers south of the border to earn lucrative NCAA scholarships including Lauren Edelmeier (Northeastern),
Jenn Melnyk and Gillian Wladichuk (Kent State), Kristie Lau (Missouri State) Shannon Herold (Stanford) and Emma Mackie (Providence). Delta players have also been fixtures on provincial teams each summer that compete for national championships. Field hockey is noted for being a great team sport that improves your foot work and hand eye coordination and integrates well with other sports such as ice hockey and soccer. The club is still accepting registration for the coming season which features games in the Greater Vancouver Field Hockey League for teams U11 and up. For more information visit www.falcons.ca.
A1 Storm capture league banner South Delta Atom A1 Storm are riding their outstanding campaign into this week’s Pacific Coast Amateur’s Fraser Valley Flight One playoffs. The Storm are entering the post-season with plenty of momentum after capturing the PCAHA banner as Fraser Valley Flight One regular season champions thanks to a 16-2-4 record. South Delta held off Cloverdale A1, Langley A1 and Semiahmoo A1 for top spot. The teams could very well square off again in the Final Four playoffs. First, the locals must take care of Langley A2 in a four-point series that started last night in Tsawwassen. The Storm’s 35-7-6 overall record also
includes a first place finish at Coquitlam Minor Hockey’s recent 54th annual PUP Tournament. South Delta defeated the host Chiefs 5-3 in the championship game to capture the nine-team division. The Storm are coached by (Boots) Lawson Boutillier who is also South Delta Minor Hockey’s coach coordinator. His assistants include Casey Ferguson and Steve Cowan. The roster features: Drezen Bertsch, Miller Bruckshaw, Owen Cooper, Thomas Cowan, Dominic Dumas, Jack Ferguson, Noah Hettinga, Koen Hubbard, Armaan Kaila, Damian Kravcak, Kaden Meyer, Connely Parker, Blair Pashak, Nolan Stewart, Marcus Taylor and Hayden Flack.

NIXON, Linda October 25, 1949 - February 22, 1998 20 years have passed but you are forever loved and remembered.
JOHNSON-TAGGART, Karen L. 1949-2008 We miss you. Ten years has past too quick. We can hear your laughter in heaven. Your love for us makes us who we are today. Your community contributions continue to build and grow. You are greatly missed every day.
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nicola Myles on January 19, with her family by her side. She is predeceased by her loving husband, Bob. Nicola is survived by her children; Patrick, Stephen and Jillian; her grandchildren, Ashleigh, Hailey and Julia; her many much loved nieces and nephews, as well as many wonderful friends. Mom was born in Merritt and was the youngest of six children. She graduated from St. Paul’s Hospital in 1953 as a Registered Nurse. We will all miss her terribly, but are comforted to know that she is reunited with her family and her husband Bob.
We love you
We would like to thank the caregivers at Mountain View Manor for their kindness and attentive care.
