Officers show their support

Childbirth scare for the MacWilliams family highlights the need for blood donations IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Delta police officers came out to support one of their own at the Canadian Blood Services donor clinic in Ladner Wednesday afternoon. Const. Jordan MacWilliams and his wife Stephanie, who is a constable with the Vancouver Police Department, could never have imagined they would be recipients of a blood donation until a medical emergency last year almost changed their lives. Stephanie was in Langley Memorial Hospital to give birth to their second child. She was scheduled to have a C-section, but went into labour early. Everything appeared well in hand, but what should have been a routine procedure turned into a critical medical situation. “I had a hysterectomy. My bladder was cut, my ureter severed and my external iliac artery severed,” Stephanie recalled. “I was given six units of blood in Langley and then transferred to Royal Columbian where I received 30-plus more units.” Doctors told Jordan to prepare for the worst as there was a chance of brain damage, loss of a limb — even death. But thanks to the blood donations, she pulled through, waking up the next day in the ICU. MACWILLIAMS: see Page 3

Duo to tackle Kilimanjaro

Lesley Toigo and son Brody to climb African peak in support of Alzheimer’s

will be “pretty special” to do with his mom. He turns 30 a week before they leave for Africa. Brody, who’s spoken with a few people who’ve done it before, said he expects the climb will definitely be a challenge. “What I’ve gathered is it’s not so much the terrain that’s difficult, it’s the elevation and the pace which you climb at that elevation,” he said. “It’s something I’m up for.” Donations can be made online through http:// joinbc.alzheimer.ca/goto/ teamtoigo. The Alzheimer Society of B.C provides a variety of programs and services for people with Alzheimer’s and other dementias, families and caregivers.

A local mother and son team will be heading to Africa next month to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro. Tsawwassen’s Lesley Toigo and her son Brody are climbing Africa’s highest peak to raise money for the Alzheimer Society of B.C. “I think it will be a big challenge. I’ve heard that it is. But I’m ready for it and I think Brody is too,” said Toigo, a retired mother of five. She said Alzheimer’s affects many people and is “such a tough disease” that impacts the individual as well as family members and friends. Brody, who works in the banking industry, grew up in Tsawwassen and now lives in Vancouver. He called climbing the 19,000-foot peak a once in a lifetime opportunity that

MacWilliams most grateful that people donate blood CONTINUED from Page 1 “Everybody doesn’t expect to need blood, but it took 40 people or more to save me,” she said. “I’m grateful that people donate.” Jordan said the support from his fellow officers is overwhelming. “For them to show up and donate today is amazing. You think about it and you realize how important it is, but what you don’t realize is how personal it can be,” he said. “You appreciate the donation

and what that means so much more when something like this happens to you.” Chief Neil Dubord said it’s always important for the department to support one of its own. “It’s critical for us to be able to show support and leadership and how critical this is for (Canadian) Blood Services to get donations and be able to assist those that need it in our community,” said Dubord. “There is an emotional tie to everything we

do, so it’s nice to see the local impact and the success that giving blood has had on the MacWilliams family.” David Patterson, director, donor relations with Canadian Blood Services, said the support from emergency services in Delta has been tremendous. “The Delta police are not only supporting one of their own, but also the community as a whole,” Patterson said. The Ladner clinic coin-

cided with the nation-wide Sirens for Life campaign, in which emergency personnel across the country are encouraged to give blood. According to Canadian Blood Services, this is a critical time for donations as donors across Canada are needed to fill 25,000 appointments before Labour Day. Ladner’s Jim Duval knows first-hand the impact donations make. The now retired 30-year veteran of the Delta Fire

Department was on hand Wednesday to donate for the 136th time. “I saw a lot of bad accidents, so it has certainly impacted me,” Duval said. “My donating started for me when the Red Cross came to our high school and we were giving blood in the gym. I probably gave it just to get out of class, but as I grew up I continued to give. I feel a lot better when I do knowing that I’m helping someone. I hope I can continue to give for as long as I can.”

Local cyclist takes on ride for fifth time

Wendy Dubnov once again taking part in this weekend’s annual Ride to Conquer Cancer IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Ladner’s Wendy Dubnov will be among the thousands taking part in B.C.’s largest cycling fundraiser this weekend. The ninth annual Ride to Conquer Cancer leaves Cloverdale bright and early tomorrow morning, taking riders through a course of more than 200 kilometres throughout the Pacific Northwest on the way to Seattle. Dubnov, who has lived in Ladner for the past two years with her husband and three children, will be taking part for the fifth time. She admits she is not an avid cyclist, but was motivated to take on the challenging ride by chance. “I saw an ad about the ride and was having a kind of round about conversation with family and friends and I had known a friend who had done it and I said, ‘I think I can do that.’ A couple of them said no you couldn’t do that, there is no way. Tip leads to arrest of shoplifting suspect IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

Alert citizens who noticed some suspicious activity helped Delta police nab a theft suspect at Tsawwassen Mills Monday night. Police responded to a report of a suspicious person in the 5000-block of Canoe Pass Way around 9 p.m. “Citizens were suspicious of a male who was removing packaging from electronic items in the parking lot of the Tsawwassen Mills mall,” said DPD public affairs coordinator Sharlene Brooks. “Once the male

left the packaging behind, the citizen returned the packaging to the store believing the items may be stolen.” Brooks said police were called and subsequently located the male nearby. He was found to be in possession of multiple items confirmed to be stolen from local businesses. These items included the new bike he was riding to haul away his stash. The 37-year-old from Surrey was taken into custody without incident. Although the investigation continues, the man is facing charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property.

said. “Then there is really showing myself that I can do something like this. The first year I did it, it was pouring rain — it was brutal. The second year

there was some rain, but it wasn’t as bad, so every year has always been a different experience. “I have three kids and I fear often when they are sick wondering is this something bad? I’ve had family members and coworkers who have passed away from cancer, so if I can do something to help and raise money to get rid of this terrible disease, then anyone can do it.” The event has raised more than $77 million in its eight years. “It’s a tough couple of days, but when you reach the last pit stop before the finish line it is pretty exhilarating,” she said. “You know that no matter how tired you are or how your body aches, you are in that last stretch, so it’s motivation for that last push. You have people from all walks of life cheering you on and your fellow competitors to charge through. When you finish it is rewarding, to say the least.” To make a donation or register for the 2018 event, see: www.conquercancer. ca.

Thanks to members of the motoring public, a potentially dangerous driver was pulled off the road and a stolen vehicle was recovered in North Delta Monday night. A 22-year-old Surrey man is facing a string of charges following an incident that began near Nordel Way. According to police, a

patrol officer noticed a Honda Civic travelling at a high rate of speed. When it fled police did not pursue, but within minutes two citizens called police to report it. An officer conducting roving patrols near Nordel Court, however, located a male matching the description of the driver and took him into custody.

New report finds kids are all right — sort of SANDOR GYARMATI

s g y a r m a t i @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

Kids in Delta are doing all right — for the most part. That’s the conclusion of a report from DeltaKids, a subcommittee of the Delta Child and Youth Committee that’s comprised of approximately 40 member agencies. Titled The Kids Are Alright, Sort of, the report, based on a survey conducted in 2015, was discussed last week by Delta council. The report found that 28 per cent of children in Delta are vulnerable in one or more scales. Gillian McLeod, Delta’s corporate social planner, said several of those areas have improved in recent years. When it came to community factors, 54 per cent of the time parents selected the most positive response and those responses were generally favourable with issues such as safety, transportation and access to outdoor spaces.

Access to outdoor spaces is good but there are still issues with access to healthcare and childcare. The biggest challenges include having access to a doctor (46 per cent) and mental health professionals (40 per cent) as well as access to childcare (17 per cent) and public health (16 per cent). McLeod said the committee meets monthly to discuss trends and how to address them. “It’s a very organized group, so they’ll notice, ‘Yes, this is an issue and who is doing that work?’ One will take the lead on that and the other agencies will support as they can,” she explained. “This information helps with that decision making and helps with that

advocacy the agencies themselves can do as well in getting the proper partners. Often times that becomes the different ministries and that is one of the reasons why the Ministry of Children and Family Development is funding those committees to continue, so that they can hear directly from those services providers where the issues are and where they perhaps can step up,” she added. Mayor Lois Jackson said Delta provides a lot but she isn’t a big fan of the report’s title. Issues such as housing and health fall within the provincial purview, she noted.

Genealogist shares story of her family’s Delta roots

The Delta Museum and Archives Society recently launched Our Delta Stories, a project that asks community members to share their favourite Delta story in 250 words or less. The stories will be posted to the society’s social media pages and website, while some will also be printed in the Optimist. This story comes from Linda Nygard. My work as a genealogist has helped rebuild our family history in the North Delta area over the past 112 years. In 1905 my great grandmother, Wendla Julina Michelsson, and her daughter (my grandmother), Signe “Sadie” Augusta, sailed from Finland to British Columbia. They settled on Annacis Island where Wendla married Roland Berg, a Norwegian immigrant. In 1906, they were joined by Wendla’s son

John. John died in 1933 after falling off a fishing boat. He is buried in the little cemetery on Brooke Road. Wendla and Roland had a daughter, Nora. Roland died of tuberculosis in 1910. In 1912, Wendla married George Aronsen and they settled at the southeast corner of Brooke and River roads. The property extended east to include a little cemetery. Family lore says that Wendla and George donated that land to Delta. They raised farm animals on their land. Years later, when my father and his siblings would visit from New Westminster, Wendla would put cow’s milk in bottles as her grandchildren would not drink milk from the cow only from a dairy! George and Wendla had four sons — twins George

and Harold, Roy and Thorleif. Wendla died at home in 1948. The home was sold and reportedly burnt on New Year’s Eve 1969. My grandmother Sadie, her half sister Nora, and the four boys attended school at the original oneroom Annieville School located beside Trinity Lutheran Church on River Road. Sadie was confirmed in Trinity Lutheran Church in 1915. She married my grandfather there in 1926 and my father, Frank Roland Hunter, was christened there in 1927. My son and daughter attended the rebuilt Annieville School in the 1970s and 1980s and three of my grandchildren are or have been students there. Two other grandchildren live in Sunshine Hills. My husband and I have lived in Annieville for 42 years and it has always felt like home.

Chico Chico is an adorable two year old male Chihuahua around 10lbs. He definitely had a tough go his first few years as he can get nervous and defensive with new people and dogs at first. Ideally his furever home would be a mellow family with no children that enjoy a calm daily routine. His new family needs to have the time and patience to let him adjust at his own pace and not force interaction on him and be able to respect when he’s uncomfortable. We also want someone who will not let him get away with bad behavior and help show him the proper way to deal with his anxiety and fear. Despite his small size, Chico LOVES walks and hikes and can keep up with almost anyone! He is good with other dogs, big and small, but definitely prefers his small buddies over big guys. We feel a home where he could be king of the world or have one other doggie friend would be ideal, especially if that other dog was confident and social to help rub off on him. We don’t know about cats, but feel Chico would be fine with proper introduction and time. He loves his crate and feels safe in there. He is also great on leash and house broken. As with all our dogs, he is neutered and up to date on all shots and vaccines. Chico is truly such an adorable little man that will be your shadow and snuggle BFF once he trusts you and it doesn’t take long. He is definitely worth it. Kent Warmington (centre) with Terry and Barbara Bell at the Chiswick slipway on the River Thames on Aug. 21.

Reunion a half-century later

Fifty years ago, on Aug. 21, 1967, an exiled South African couple set off from London in a five-metre kayak to meet an initial challenge by a fellow traveler and Delta resident Kent Warmington. He had maintained that Terry Bell could not paddle a kayak from London to Tangiers, a challenge made when the two met in Morocco in December 1965. There the matter might have ended, but another Canadian stole Bell’s prized bush hat and Warmington pledged to return it. He followed his

countryman across Europe to Afghanistan where he found the hat and it was eventually returned. “That made me think I owed it to Kent to take on the challenge and I managed to persuade my then new wife, Barbara, to join me,” said Bell when he, Barbara and Warmington met again in London this week for the first time in more than 51 years. But back in 1966, with blind optimism, Bell decided to extend the destination to Dar es Salaam, an 11,000-kilometre trip. “With hindsight, it

sounds insane, but we eventually made it to Dar — 13 years, two continents and two children later,” Bell remarked as he, Barbara and Warmington, together with members of the Bell family, toasted one another at the slipway on the River Thames where the Bells’ voyage had begun. The journey is now detailed in a book, A Hat, a Kayak & Dreams of Dar, scheduled to be released in South Africa in October. It is dedicated to Warmington and to all adventurers.

t’s definitely a problem for another day, so far down the road in fact that many of us won’t be around to deal with it, but it’s one that’s on the horizon nonetheless. I’m referring to the issue of heritage homes, which has caused much hand wringing in Delta in recent times, but is sure to intensify in the decades to come. Civic officials are having such a difficult time grappling with the matter now that I wonder what the future will hold. Delta is a relatively young 138, and given it was a small, isolated fishing and farming community for its first 80 years, there were only so many homes built a century or more ago. Most of those have succumbed to Father Time, others have been lovingly restored, while a certain number uncomfortably straddle those two worlds. It’s that latter group that’s causing so much consternation as battles routinely erupt over whether to preserve or demolish a structure from our past. These flare-ups are a result of a comparatively small number of homes, which makes me wonder what will happen in another 30 or 40 years when a big whack of Delta’s housing stock approaches what could be considered heritage territory. The George Massey Tunnel opened 58 years ago, ushering in a building boom so great that a new school, or two, had to be opened every September just to keep pace with residential growth. Delta’s population increased tenfold in a couple of decades and we’ve now got the housing inventory to prove it. Those homes are a ways away from being considered heritage candidates, but I suspect enough will survive the coming decades to produce some rather awkward conversations in the future. I’d like to be a fly on the wall of the council chambers a half-century from now when they’re debating whether one of those two-storey box houses should be torn down or preserved because it’s a classic example of 1960s architecture in Ladner. I realize that for a house to be considered for heritage status it has to have architectural value or be connected to a significant person, and not just be old, but if recent debates are any gauge, the age of a structure is a major factor. And it won’t be that long before Delta has a great many houses that will qualify by that measure.

It’s time to revise school year and ditch electronic devices

W

ith the return to school on the horizon, I would like to offer some ideas I have had regarding public school education. The English public school system, which was the basis for our system, was started about 200 years ago when the British realized that giving basic education to the children of England would create better tradesmen and provide a better base for the growth and development of the country. Public school has been in place from September until June for all of those 200 years because originally children were needed in the summer to help on the farm so the family had an income and enough to eat. In the last 50 years we have moved away from an agricultural-based society. I believe it’s time the school year should be revised, which would solve some other issues at the same time. My thought would be that after maybe grades 1 and 2 that the classes should enter a semester system. Each grade would start the first semester in September through the end of November when they would write a provincial exam based on the curricula for that semester. Those who pass move on to the second semester

Community Comment GREG HOOVER

that starts Jan. 1; those who fail repeat first semester. The second semester ends March 31 with another provincial exam. Those who pass start the third semester, running May 1 to July 31. There are several advantages: 1. Those who pass move through the system quickly and are not held back by students who require more training. 2. Those who fail only lose three months and not an entire year of their life. (Does anyone fail anymore?) 3. Summer school would not be necessary. 4. Students would be motivated to pass and avoid having to repeat. 5. Maybe the final exams for high school semesters could be set by colleges and universities to

prepare students for a trade or a professional degree. Another idea is to remove all electronic devices — cell phones, calculators and computers — from schools. I believe strongly in this because by the time they graduate the technology they learned is outdated and no longer applicable, except for learning how to type. Grades 1 to 8 should exist to give the children at least a basic understanding of the science that everyone encounters in life as well as basic mathematics and a command of English or French. Using electronic devises to educate is to me like getting on a jet at YVR on the way to Frankfurt when you learn that both pilots were extensively trained on simulators, but have never actually experienced flying a plane. Are you still going? The goal of the public school system is to educate the children of the province with the skills to navigate life. How will voters of the future formulate an opinion when the basis of what they know comes from their phone and not from their own residual reasoning and knowledge? Tunnel congestion is a non-issue in HOV lane

Editor: I’ve been following the debate over replacement of the George Massey Tunnel with great interest and growing bewilderment. Those who support spending billions of scarce infrastructure dollars on a massive bridge ground their argument on the claim there is a huge problem with traffic congestion at the Fraser River crossing that must be solved. This is truly mystifying. I regularly use the tunnel in both directions at various times of the day and am never delayed more than a few seconds. Most of the time I barely have to slow down before heading into the tunnel. Of course, I am either riding my motorcycle, taking the #601 bus (public transit is a wonderful

thing) or driving with one or more companions. That means I get to use the HOV lane, travel at reasonable speed and merge seamlessly into traffic heading under the river. In case you are not familiar with the term, HOV stands for “high occupancy vehicle.” It is true that during rush hours one can’t help but notice a significant back-up of cars and trucks not using the HOV lane. That is because they are what you might call “low occupancy vehicles” — one person taking up an inordinate amount of road space and burning an unconscionable amount of climate-destroying fossil fuel. This is exactly what we need to discourage: the most inefficient form of human transportation ever

created. First, by not facilitating it with irresponsible highway and bridge expansion and secondly by creating efficient and user-friendly public transit alternatives. This is why it is so disappointing to see Jurassic Jackson and her band of Neanderthals (otherwise known as Delta’s mayor and council) continuing to beat this horse that if not yet dead at least appears mercifully close to expiring. We don’t need freeways choked with gas-guzzling, single-driver cars. Our communities south of the Fraser need 21st century transportation solutions focused around safe, clean and efficient mass transit. That is the future we need to create. Bob Ages

Public must be cognizant that farmland is private property Editor: If we truly want to support farming in Delta, we have to do more than pay lip service. We must act accordingly. The large acreage that borders along the dike in Beach Grove is planted with different crops, including corn, potatoes, rye and sunflowers. It is privately owned and there are signs or obstacles at most of the entrances from public land to private land. The owners and the lessors of the property have closed the fields to people as food safety does not allow for people, dogs, horses, campers, picnickers or any form of intrusion. Farmers have to

secure the safety of their food crops and they are held accountable if the food becomes compromised. Farmers also operate heavy equipment in order to work the fields and harvest the food they grow. There are very large farm machines running on the property and the operators cannot be looking out for children, pets, etc. when they are working. A couple years ago there was a large cornfield that the children were running through during harvest time. The corn is very tall and the corn cutter that chops the stalks is very fast and the knives are extremely sharp. The chil-

dren could not be seen in the fields and the driver would have had no time to react. I am so glad no one was hurt but farm fields are not play fields and the public should stay out. Some people seem to feel that food safety is not their concern and ignore the signage and implements put in the way of the entrances. If your children like to run in the corn, please take them to a maze for their fun and safety, but do not let them venture into planted fields. The bottom line is that if we want to support farming in Delta we must act appropriately and respect the signs. Wendy Christoff

Don’t want those Conservatives back

Editor: Re: Bleak forecast in the cards, letter to the editor, Aug. 18 Bob Orrick’s bleak opinion piece constitutes a diatribe that belongs in its own opinion column rather than a letter to the editor. He seems to be magically endowed with great farcical insight into an inability on the part of the new provincial government “to see right from wrong,” the apparent “snoozing” of the

federal government, with passing insults (Canada’s pseudo-prime minister; the prime minister’s desire to sink us into a sea of red ink). How tiresome to see, in 2017, reference to a “Red Menace” apparently democratically winning an election, when the news is filled with reports and images of emboldened modern Nazis and white supremacists. If his desire for a return of a Conservative govern-

ment at the next election is realized, some folk will be hopeful that it will not be like the last one which prorogued Parliament no fewer than four times, suffered an historic contempt of Parliament vote because it would not provide information on large project costs and had its leader openly criticizing the chief justice of the Supreme Court because of a decision he did not like. We can only hope. Stephen Calvert

Youth Crew sees good and bad in Boundary Bay

Throughout the summer while other young people were relaxing, The Nature Trust of BC Lower Mainland Conservation Youth Crew was hard at work. The Nature Trust hires young people each summer to tackle a wide variety of conservation activities on properties across the province and learn valuable skills for future employment. This summer the crew spent time in Boundary Bay. The crews perform onthe-ground work as well as attend workshops from specialists in the field on topics such as bird counts, and forest and wetland ecology. “I love working outdoors and working with my hands. I am also studying conservation and I love to be able to have a

job where I can help out the environment,” says crew member Brittany Bonapace. A crew hosted a cleanup event in Boundary Bay where at the end of the day it had a giant pile of garbage with items ranging from industrial piping to fishing traps. It also participated with the Delta Naturalists on two birding trips at Boundary Bay and Surrey Bend Regional Park. “I learned about the importance of protecting areas that hold high ecological significance and how The Nature Trust of BC manages the properties by acquiring lands and restoring habitats on the properties,” says fellow crew member Terita Deare. “My favourite activity was conducting eBird surveys on the proper-

difficult thing she had to do was to see how terribly people treat the environ-

ment such as dumping garbage and damaging plants.

The last graduating class from Delta Senior Secondary comprised of students from both Ladner and Tsawwassen is having its 45th reunion next month. The barbecue and barn

dance is also a chance to recognize how the Ladner community welcomed the Tsawwassen students, said organizer Jennifer Leigh. “One of the things I wanted to do with this grad reunion is to honour the fact we’d come in and basically Ladner had taken us in,” she said.

The Tsawwassen students were shown much friendliness while going to school in Ladner, Leigh said. “When you’re thrown into classes all the time, you’re doing things together, and start planning to do things after school … there’s not that much of

a difference between us,” she said. “We all sort of have a soft spot in our hearts for … Delta secondary.” South Delta has undergone many changes from the early 1970s, said Kristin Crouch, another member of the class of ’72. “It’s so different now.

There’s been so much growth for one thing, as far as housing goes,” she said. Originally called South Delta Senior Secondary, Tsawwassen’s high school opened its doors in September 1973, a time of huge population growth following the opening of the George Massey Tunnel

years earlier. The reunion party is set for Saturday, Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Roddick Barn on Westham Island. Tickets to the reunion are $60 and available online through the Eventbrite website. Visit http://bit.ly/2xcqd3c to buy tickets.

Compassionatevolunteersneeded to staff care centre reception desk

“Centre for Supportive Care, can I help you?” This is what you’ll hear if you call Delta Hospice any weekday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Yes, a real person will be on the other end of the phone, ready to assist any way they can. Reception volunteers offer that human-to-human connection that makes a world of difference to people faced with a new lifelimiting diagnosis, trying to navigate the complicated health care system or struggling with a recent loss. Reception is one of a variety of opportunities available to people choosing to volunteer with Delta Hospice. Volunteers cover a morning or afternoon shift, greeting clients and visitors, answering phones and helping with administrative tasks and projects. Several volunteers have been at the desk for many years, while others fill in when regular volunteers are not available. Volunteer Richard Howes’ primary hospice focus is at Irene Thomas Hospice residence, where he volunteers weekly, supporting patients and families at the end of life, but he’s also one of those reception spares.

We have all experienced the result of the exertion of the human will within specific time contained circumstances and our finite tunnel vision that has repeatedly led us into violence, the imposition of our will upon one another. Don’t you think it might be refreshing to experience a world in which the life giving, infinite wisdom of a good, pleasing and perfect will shapes the manner by which we engage our family, friends, neighbours, society and every nation? Yes, it would require us all to be transformed by the renewing of our mind. Would it make a difference? God knows!

Don Levers has written a book inspired by an actual heist from the ‘70s.

Don Levers will be visiting Ladner with his new crime fiction title next week. The author has penned Loot for the Taking, a book inspired by the 1977 robbery of the Vancouver Safety Deposit Vaults. “I always wondered what would have happened if it was guys like you and I, just ordinary guys, that had done this,”

he says. Levers explains the culprits pulled off what should have been the perfect heist, drilling through concrete and steel, ransacking 1,200 safety deposit boxes, only to be caught later at the Vancouver airport with “bulging bags of boodle,” according to a May 1977 article in the Province. Levers, 61, an Edmonton resident, lived in Vancouver at the time of the robbery.

“The story was finished and written in my head 30 years ago,” he explains. “But it was a matter of getting it down on paper, or the computer, to something that was hopefully legible.” Levers will be at Black Bond Books in Trenant Park Square in Ladner on Tuesday, Aug. 29 from 1 to 4 p.m. For more information about the book, visit Levers’ website at www. lootforthetaking.com.

Type of exercise can affect your appetite

Intense workout can help suppress cravings

Well on Your Way P.J. WREN

Exercise, for all its glory, seems to have one downfall for some people — it makes them hungrier afterwards. Instead of experiencing the post-workout high the rest of us do, they struggle with the post-workout munchies. Now, craving food after exercise is not uncommon. Experts say for every 10 calories we burn our bodies are expected to naturally crave three calories afterwards. This is simple biology to ensure we remain properly fueled. However, there are a number of small studies on the subject that have shown that certain types of exercise will squash the food cravings faster than others and that your current body composition might also play a role in whether exercise triggers the urge to overeat. First, let’s discuss the type of exercise that could help curb your stomach from grumbling for pizza afterwards. Recently a study was published that showed the more intense your workout is, the less likely you will feel hungry afterwards.

The study looked at quandary: Obese individuthe effects of the differals need to exercise to help ent types of exercise on them lose the body fat. the levels of ghrelin, a To help offset this reward hormone in the blood and craving mechanism that is thought to increase that may be triggered with appetite. New courts at Memorial offer opportunity to try pickleball

Delta Pickleball Association welcomes newcomers with lessons IAN JACQUES

i j a c q u e s @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .co m

The unique game with the unique name now has a dedicated outdoor home in Ladner. Recently three pickleball courts were opened by Delta as part of the sport court project in Memorial Park. According to Delta Pickleball Association spokesperson Peter Darvill, the three courts are the first dedicated pickleball courts to be built in the Lower Mainland.

Darvill said the volunteer-run association plays Monday and Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday at 10 a.m., weather permitting. The association is offering free beginner lessons on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. with prior registration. “You don’t have to be a chiseled athlete to play this game and it doesn’t take years to become good at it unlike tennis, golf, etc.,” he said. “The learning curve is rapid. Just get off the couch, off the cell phone, off the laptop and

enjoy.” At the recent opening celebration, local players demonstrated the sport for the assembled civic politicians and public. Mayor Lois Jackson and Delta MP Carla Qualtrough both tried their hand at the game. “Carla is legally blind, but was able to pick up the ball very well and return it, something she is not able to do with tennis. It just shows how this game is for all, from nine to 99 and beyond,” added Darvill. Darvill said the sport is experiencing rapid

growth in B.C. with six courts soon to open in Nanaimo and courts popping up across the interior in Kelowna, Salmon Arm, Trail and Penticton. “As our association evolves, we will have equal level play times throughout the week, but right now we just want people to come out and enjoy,” he said. “We applaud Delta council and Delta parks and recreation for their foresight.” Learn more about the local association and the game at www.deltapickleball.org. You can also contact Darvill at peterd@ deltapickleball.org or by phone at 604-940-1667 for more information. PHOTO BY ADRIAN MACNAIR

From the mound to the crease Two-sport standout Braedy Euerby turns his attention to Giants training camp MARK BOOTH

m b o o t h @ d e l t a - o p t i m i s t .c o m

It’s one impressive juggling act that Braedy Euerby doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon. Just a few weeks after having a leading role in the Delta Tigers repeating as B.C. Baseball 15U AAA provincial champions, the 15-year-old from Ladner hit the ice yesterday for his first Western Hockey League training camp with the Vancouver Giants. The promising goaltender was taken 103rd overall by the Giants in May’s WHL Bantam Draft after an impressive season with the Delta Hockey Academy’s Bantam Varsity team. He was named the division’s top goalie with seven shutouts in 11 league games, resulting in a .970 save percentage. Since then Euerby has been shortlisted for B.C. Hockey’s U16 team following an extensive evaluation process that included a week long provincial camp in Shawnigan Lake last month. The final roster will be announced sometime this fall with B.C. slated to compete at the Western Canada U16

Challenge Cup. Following the Giants camp, Euerby will be in DHA colours again this coming season, suiting up for the Elite 15 team, coached by Spencer Bennett. He also plans on taking the next step in his impressive baseball career with the North Delta Blue Jays organization with a good shot of cracking the senior roster. The right-handed pitcher closed out an impressive two-year stint with the Tigers by being a major force in their provincial title run. He allowed no hits and struck out 10 in nearly six innings of work in a key semi-final win over WestCoast. He also helped his own cause with a two-run homer. He also found time in the summer to play for B.C. Baseball’s 15U Selects team. So as the demands for both sports intensify, will Euerby shift his focus to just one? Not if he can help it. “It’s been tough but I don’t like to be bored,” he smiled. “For sure it can get very crazy at times but I love being busy and I love putting the work in to both

Maznik helps B.C. capture bronze at Pee Wee Nationals

A busy summer of box lacrosse for Jared Maznik included having a leading role in Team B.C.’s bronze medal finish at the Pee Wee National Championships in Whitby, ON. The 12-year-old from Ladner racked up 16 points, including 10 assists which ranked fourth and first respectively in the entire tournament. B.C. clinched a podium spot with an 8-4 victory over Alberta after dropping a hard-fought 6-4 semi-final battle to First Nationals a day earlier. Team B.C. had opened the championships with an 8-2 setback to eventual champion Ontario before battling back into contention with wins over Alberta (8-3), Saskatchewan (172), Manitoba (17-1) and Nova

Scotia (13-4). The trip back east culminated a journey that began with a regional camp in late April. Maznik was among a group of selected players invited to another three-day camp a few weeks later at the Langley Events Centre. The Team B.C. roster of 20 players was announced soon after with Maznik being the lone Delta representative. Those extra hours spent at the Ladner outdoor box working on his stick skills had paid off. The group reflected talent from across the province including four players from Vancouver Island while Ridge Meadows led the way with five players selected. The team got together for

Maznik, a student at Sacred Heart Elementary, also plays basketball and runs for the schools cross-country and track teams. However, lacrosse has been his passion since he started playing when he was five. His grandfather played up in Prince George back in the 1960s and two of his wooded sticks are now hanging on his bedroom wall. Besides being part of the Delta Islanders rep program, Maznik also plays the field version of the sport with the Delta Footmen.

The Tsawwassen club qualified 51 athletes for the event, with 31 making the trek up the Coquihalla Highway. “We had lots of fast swims, best times, finals, medals and club records!,” said Bluebacks head coach Sydney Peake. “All of the swimmers have something to be proud of.” While the stakes where high in Kamloops, the fun side of the weekend was not lost as well. That was evident when the Bluebacks were presented the President’s Award — ‘May the Fourth Be With You — which recognized their team spirit. “We had a solid group of swimmers stay behind after completing their own races to cheer on their own teammates,” added Peake. “I was amazed by how supportive and encouraging they were with each other.” Individual results included:

OUR TESTIMONIALS SPEAK FOR THEMSELVES! To the Fraser Elliott Team, I'd like to thank you for a job well done selling my house. Your team is very professional and competent. No matter what questions I had, you people got back to me immediately with the answers and confirmed by other members of your team. You were always easy to reach, and your expertise and knowledge was very much appreciated. I would highly recommend your team to anyone needing a Realtor. PS. The free moving van was a surprise and really helped, Thank You. - Ralph Rasmussen When we called Fraser Elliott it was only a matter of hours that he and Garrett, his teammate, were at our door to view the property and to set an asking price. They were very efficient and helpful. They sold our home within a week and we were amazed at their expertise and handling of the sale. Thank you so much Fraser's team for all your hard work. Well done! - J&H I chose the Fraser Elliott Group to make the sale of my North Delta apartment happen and it did! I personally was confident that I had made a good choice. All the team were respectful and made me feel that my ideas and opinion were valued. Communication was pleasantly and skillfully done by Phil. The end result for the times was good and I would certainly consult them if ever needed. - Lois Garrett gave an appraisal for my home and I considered other realtors, but Garrett's straightforward approach and no pressure attitude led me to list with him. I had reservations about selling during the winter especially after the major snowstorms we have experienced. They sent out a photographer who had to wade in a foot of snow to photograph the outside and despite the weather, the realtor's open house still took place shortly after. It was a roller coaster ride of negotiations which Garrett and Jennifer navigated with great skill and professionalism. The end result was the house was sold in a week. Overall, it was a great experience with the Fraser Elliott Real Estate Group. Well done. I would definitely recommend the Fraser Elliott Group to others. - Don W

Fraser Elliott is a step up from other firms with whom I've listed. They delivered on marketing with professional photos and targeted Facebook marketing. They sold my commercial strata office unit in a matter of weeks, and for a very satisfactory price. Additionally they work as a team, not individual Realtors, and this ensures everything keeps moving. I would certainly recommend their services. - Levi I'd like to say we developed a great relationship with Fraser's team while we went through the sales process, but the truth is we didn't have time. It was a week from signing up with the team to signing the sale documents! What more can we say? A professional team that executes on their promise like a well oiled machine! They make magic. Bench strength we never imagined. No wonder they are award winning! Not using them would really be your loss. Choosing Fraser's team was the best decision we could have made.Thank you Fraser, Garrett, Julie, Amber, Rachel, James the photographer, and Kashmir the stager. You far exceeded our expectations. We're sold!! - Ray and Joanne M The Fraser Elliott Team, l'd like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to you and your entire staff on what l consider to be an outstanding job on the sale of my condo. From our first meeting you told me that you would treat the sale of my condo the same way you would handle selling a $3 million home. You and your team stood by your word and did exactly that. I couldn't be happier! With the extremely tight window time you and your team was working with you made it all fit together. An outstanding performance by you all and my thanks and gratitude for all your hard work. I feel privileged to have met and worked together with such a congenial group as yourselves and will pass my positive recommendations on the appropriate people. Thanks again for the outstanding effort you all put in for me. Sincerely, - Dave Ennis

Our experience working with the Fraser Elliott group was excellent. We were very happy with all aspects of the service provided - sales agent, photographer and staging advice. Everything we needed was done in a very efficient manner and we were always kept in the loop about what was happening. Phil was a great sales agent. He was always on time, always answered my questions and was professional and honest. He was always upbeat and positive as well as thoughtful and understanding. As a busy mom with three little kids at home, Phil always took my concerns seriously and worked to accommodate our needs. I was very happy with our experience and I recommend Fraser Elliott Group to friends and family in the future! - Sara Raouf Thank you to the Fraser Elliott group for selling our townhouse. We were really impressed with our initial meeting with Garrett, with the staging consultation and with the professional photographs taken of our townhouse. A great big thank you to Julie, Rachel, Jennifer and Amber. They worked really hard on all of our showings and promptly got back to us to let us know the outcome after each one. We would highly recommend the Fraser Elliott group to anyone looking to sell their home. - Bryant and Heather

#7 RE/MAX速 TEAM IN CANADA IN 2016**

I highly recommend the Fraser Elliott team . They are very professional and keep you posted continually . They did an amazing job to get us the best price possible for our house including providing a stager. - Linda Nash We couldn't be happier with the experience we had selling our house with Fraser Elliott group! Everything was done in an efficient way, from the staging, professional photos, showings and negotiations. Philip did a great job selling the place and Garrett was able to negotiate the deal we wanted. All in two weeks! If we ever need to sell again we know where to go! - Liselott and Mike McFarlane

REMEMBRANCES

RONNIE GIBSON

September 1933 - August 2003 Remember him with a smile today, he was not one for tears. Reflect instead on memories, of all the happy years. Recall to mind the way he spoke and all the things he said, his strength, his courage, the way he lived, remember these instead. He was a very special man, his eyes that shon with laughter, so much of him that never dies, that lives on ever after.

Remembered & loved always, Pidge, Leanna (Merv), Tanya (Darrell), Darah, Jarrod and Shelby.

SMITH, Christopher “Derek” March 17, 1973 - August 12, 2017 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden passing of our son Derek at age 44. Derek made Tsawwassen his home for the past 30 years after growing up in Port Coquitlam. He took pride in his work as a custodian for The Delta School Board. Although quiet, Derek was recognized by many around town and was respected by all who knew him. Derek was most happy at his parent’s farm in Langley with a coffee in his hand, helping with the farm. He enjoyed his time alone, as well as with family and watching his nieces and nephews. Derek was diagnosed with Tuberous Sclerosis at a very young age, but didn’t let it restrict him. He followed astronomy closely, took time to watch shooting stars, and any major celestial events. He will be lovingly remembered by his Father Tony, Mother Donna, Brother Robert (Anne), Sister Tanya (Stephen), Nieces and Nephews, Hannah, Sarah, Donovan, Laura and Liam. A Memorial Service in memory of Derek will be held at 1:00 pm on August 30th, 2017 at South Delta Baptist Church, 1988 56th Street, Delta. Any memorial donation in memory of Derek to Tuberous Sclerosis (Canada), tscanada.ca or P.O. Box 35057 Essa Road RO, Barrie, Ont. L4N 5Z2 would be greatly appreciated.
