The B.C. Greens announced Wednesday that Larry Colero will be their candidate in Delta South in the upcoming provincial election.

“In the last election, our party

“Other party candidates may say they will represent constituents. But as MLAs, they are expected to vote as a block to satisfy campaign donors instead of their constituents, like approving unnecessary, reck-

Police board members would like to see community stations open on weekends IAN JACQUES

Volunteers in Delta put in 28,000 hours at three community police stations (CoPS) last year, but some members of the Delta police board would like to see the program expanded.

Delta police Insp. Varun Naidu presented a CoPS year in review at Tuesday’s board meeting, outlining many of the program’s successes in 2016.

Naidu said CoPS has a robust volunteer base with 30 to 35 in Ladner, 35 to 40 in Tsawwassen and 100 to 110 in North Delta.

Volunteers in Ladner put in 4,630 hours last year, while that figure was even higher in Tsawwassen (6,066) and North Delta (17,146).

“In North Delta, we have a very strong percentage of college and university students whereas in Ladner and Tsawwassen we have more retired or senior citizens who are our volunteers,” he said. “These are amazing numbers and I’m very proud of the volunteers.”

The Ladner and Tsawwassen stations are open business hours Monday to Thursday, and while the North Delta station is open every weekday, including into the evening on some, it’s also

closed on weekends.

Board member Cameron McLeod said not having the stations open on weekends defeats the purpose of community policing.

“If we don’t do that then stop the program because half funding, half supporting is not supporting it at all,” McLeod said.

Board member Peter Buxton said the police department should be looking at more solutions to these issues.

“Why are we not making

this more attractive to students?” Buxton asked. “I guarantee that if you market this in the schools, you will be able to staff these centres. Maybe we should be shifting some of the priorities and put this into the recruiting budget.

“I respect the officers and respect the collective bargaining agreements, but you want community engagement, so that means serving the needs of the community and the needs of the community are on weekends when the

offices are not open.”

Deputy Chief Lyle Beaudoin said the capacity of the collective agreement and how much money is put towards the program are major challenges when looking at staffing levels.

“We have lots of priorities, but we can come up with some really good modeling that we could pitch to the finance committee for additional funding if that is the will,” said Beaudoin.

CoPS volunteers help drive a number of ICBC initiatives, including distracted driving campaigns, Speed Watch, Cell Watch and Lock Out Auto Crime.

Volunteers are also involved in programs such as Block Watch and Safe Schools and partner with officers on several crime prevention initiatives.

At the end of the discussion, the police board passed a resolution asking staff and police to come back to the board with a full cost analysis to see what it would take to allow the offices to be open on weekends and to look at some form of a marketing and awareness campaign to attract more volunteers.

Colero has run for the Greens in two federal elections

Colero, a former president of Ladner Minor Baseball and former chair of the Delta Community Living Society, was a South Delta resident for 25 years before he and his wife Chris followed their kids to White Rock, where

they lived for seven years.

They have since returned to South Delta. While in White Rock, he ran for the Green Party in the last two federal elections.

The party did not field a candidate in Delta South in the last election out of

respect for independent MLA Vicki Huntington and had planned to do the same this year. That was prior to Huntington making the surprise announcement that she wouldn’t be seeking a third term.

Nicholas Wong has

since stepped forward as an independent and despite Wong receiving her endorsement and constituency association backing, the Greens decided to field their own candidate.

The election will be held May 9.

TSAWWASSEN

• March 4, 11:30 a.m., 5900-block of 17A Avenue: Citizen found an empty cash box leaning against a

tree adjacent to the school.

Police seized the box and entered it into exhibits.

Box is believed to be from a previous break and enter and was likely thrown from a vehicle.

• March 4, 7:01 a.m., 5600-block of 12th Avenue: A business reported a break and enter via an adjoining door to the neighbouring business.

Once inside the business, the office door was kicked open and approximately $100 stolen.

• March 4, 5:36 a.m., 1500-block of 56th Street: An employee reported finding the front door to the business smashed.

Shortly after police received a call from the alarm company indicating the side door of the business had been compromised. Police attended

and confirmed the break and enter and theft.

LADNER

• March 2, 9:40 a.m., 7400-block of Wilson Avenue: Report received of a semi-truck trailer stolen from a business parking lot. Trailer entered on police database.

• March 3, 11:07 a.m., 4800-block of 54th Street: Complainant reported they parked their vehicle in the driveway while they were unloading groceries.

When they returned to the vehicle they found a silver MacBook Air laptop in a black case had been stolen from the open vehicle.

• March 4, 5:02 a.m., 3900-block of 33A Avenue: Complainant reported they had entered into a contractual agreement with a company in China

whereby they agreed to collect funds on behalf of the company for a monthly salary and percentage of the dividends.

Cheque received from the company was found to be fraudulent. Investigation determined the company does not exist.

• March 5, 8:11 p.m., 7900-block of Huston Road: A business reported the gated compound had been entered by cutting off the padlock. Two shipping containers in the compound had padlocks removed and several items stolen from the containers.

• March 6, 1:24 a.m., River Reach and Chisholm Street: Report of paint thrown on a residence.

Investigation by police found a vehicle parked in the area also had paint thrown on it.

Calls for police service way up in January IAN JACQUES

Calls for service to the Delta Police Department showed a dramatic increase for the first month of 2017.

Total calls in January were 2,079, up almost 300 from 1,805 in January of 2016. The increase in activity was due in part to a large jump in property crimes, which saw an overall increase of 46 per cent compared to January of last year.

Speaking at Tuesday’s Delta police board meet-

ing, Chief Neil Dubord said it’s unusual to see such a large jump in the numbers.

“It’s something that I have not seen in my two years here — I haven’t seen us go up by close to 300 calls in a month,” said Dubord. “I don’t have the February data yet, so once I get that then we will be able to see whether this was just a one off or whether we are seeing some kind of a trend.”

Deputy Chief Lyle Beaudoin also cautioned the board this was only a one-month snapshot of

data.

“Any time you see an increase like this you are concerned,” he said.

“But what it does for me is it shows us that areas that we need to focus on regarding the hot spots for auto theft, theft from vehicles and general property crime.”

Opiod funding The Delta Police Department is getting funding for another tool in its fight against fentanylrelated overdoses.

The board learned Tuesday the province has granted Delta police

$40,000 for the purchase of trace narcotic detection equipment and training.

The device will provide police with the increased ability to test for and detect fentanyl when handling drugs and investigating crime. The trace detector is not an operational tool, but rather requires specialty training and will be maintained in the drug office at Ladner headquarters. It is meant to assist officers in determining the type of drug seized in order to complete reports to Crown counsel without waiting for lab analysis.

Redevelopment along the waterfront in Ladner could happen sooner than later if an assurance to MLA Vicki Huntington comes to fruition.

The independent MLA recently called on the provincial government to fulfill its promise to offer long-term water lot leases for residents and businesses along the Fraser.

She got a reply that might provide a light at the end of tunnel.

“In 2015, the government promised to settle this issue, and they have yet to deliver,” Huntington said. “People need the certainty that comes with long-term leases for their personal, financial and business decisions.

Instead, these individuals and businesses find themselves on month-to-month leases. The situation is untenable and it’s creating chaos on the river.”

When the government took over the administration of the leases, it promised leaseholders that lease deals would be reached by the end of 2016, said Huntington.

“Without the longterm agreements in place, banks aren’t lending, developments are on hold, marinas can’t sign moorage leases and commercial docks aren’t being repaired. The government has put local residents and businesses in a terrible situation,” she said.

“The ministry was supposed to have this resolved by now. Instead, the ministry is sending out yet another survey asking basic questions,” she added. “Excuse me, but this type of work should have been completed long ago.”

Huntington noted that Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Steve Thomson responded by saying negotiations are

ongoing and are expected to be resolved “very shortly.”

Still awaiting a determination on long-term water lot leases, Delta has no redevelopment on the books for the waterfront.

The province took over managing the foreshores after its agreement with the port authority expired at the end of 2014, but Victoria hasn’t offered current or prospective leaseholders, including many float home owners and businesses, long-term tenure, which means the Delta-owned Seven Seas site, which was put up for sale, isn’t a particularly attractive place to make a big investment.

Sean McGill, Delta’s director of human resources and corporate planning, told the Optimist earlier that investors aren’t interested unless they’re guaranteed long-term deals, but he said the province was only willing to offer two-year leases.

Finance minister talks budget Mike de Jong addresses Liberal supporters during pre-campaign stop in Ladner SANDOR GYARMATI

The writ hasn’t been dropped yet but the provincial election campaign seems well underway in Delta South.

Finance Minister Mike de Jong paid a visit to Ladner last Friday afternoon to talk to over 50 party faithful at Taverna Gorgona, going over some of the highlights of the government’s recent budget, which included, among other things, a reduction in MSP premiums, reducing the interest rate on student loans and reducing the PST on electricity for businesses.

He also went over some of his government’s achievements over the last four years.

Ian Paton, the Liberal

candidate in Delta South, said he was pleasantly surprised when he was contacted and told the finance minister wanted to drop by and meet supporters.

“We basically just talked about what good shape the province is in as far as leading the country, as far as economic growth,” he said.

As far as his own effort to get elected, Paton, a Delta councillor, noted he’s been busy door knocking and meeting as many people as he can in Ladner and Tsawwassen since he won the nomination last September.

“At first it wasn’t my favourite thing, knocking on people’s doors, but most have been very supportive and positive and think I’ve done a pretty good job on Delta council,

so they think this is a good next move for me,” he added.

Nicholas Wong, who will run as an independent, and Green candidate Larry Colero will square off against Paton in the May 9 provincial election. School trustee Bruce Reid is expected to get the NDP nomination later this month.

Wong said the finance minister’s visit shows the government is worried about losing the riding yet again.

Issues, including Delta Hospital and farmland under threat, are still very much in the minds of voters, he said.

Incumbent Vicki Huntington, a two-term independent, decided not to seek re-election for health reasons.

Social profile helps Delta identify service needs ‘Living document’ will be continually updated SANDOR GYARMATI

For the first time Delta has an accurate snapshot of itself for social planning purposes.

Gillian McLeod, hired last year to be the municipality’s first social planner, and Sean McGill, director of human resources and corporate planning, made a presentation to Delta council recently to outline A Social Profile of Delta in 2017.

As far as what social planning means for Delta, McGill said it’s a process that helps identify a community’s strengths and weaknesses.

The profile is a comprehensive document outlining Delta’s demographics, available services and groups, as well as issues that need to be addressed, including service overlaps and gaps, in addition to where Delta can work with agencies to achieve more optimal results.

“We view the profile as a living document, a docu-

ment to be continually updated by staff to ensure it accurately reflects the needs of the community and those providing services to people in it,” said McGill. “We will discover over the course of the next few weeks additional services and programs that are out there and available, as well as additional needs in the community, and we’ll continually update the profile to match that.”

McLeod went over the categories within the profile, including “Health and Community,” which is the largest.

“One of the number of things I’ve found across all of this work was a lack of knowledge among the public and sometimes the agencies themselves as to who exists, who’s out there and how can we better publicize what is offered,” she said.

Some of the areas found wanting include a lack of substance abuse day treatment or residential programs for youth as well

as few services for seniors with addiction issues.

There’s also no universal daycare strategy to support those living here on limited incomes, although Delta CAO George Harvie would note that’s one area where Delta might be able to do something with developers.

Some of the other findings in the profile include a lack of emergency and short-term housing, many seniors living in social isolation and a need for programs for vulnerable youth.

The category of “Personal and Public Safety” is one area where Delta shines, said McLeod.

It was noted that Delta should not take on roles and responsibilities that belong to other agencies or governments, although the municipality can play a role by advocating, applying for funding and having a close relationship with the various stakeholders to help them fulfill their services and support mandate.

Only local traffic will be able to access a stretch of Ladner Trunk Road in East Delta until next Tuesday.

Municipal crews will be doing drainage infrastructure work at the intersection of Ladner Trunk Road and 104th Street near the

East Delta Hall.

That means only local traffic will be allowed in the area from today at 7 p.m. until Tuesday, March 14 at 5 a.m.

Deputy engineering director Hugh Fraser said 104th Street, from Highway 91 to Ladner Trunk Road, will be closed as well as

Ladner Trunk at the highways 91 and 99. Motorists will have to take Highway 99 to get around it.

Fraser said two culverts that cross under Ladner Trunk Road, as well as one under 104th Street, need replacing and the most effective way of doing that is to cut open the road.

ey, where did all that equity go?

The Greater Vancouver real estate market has been in decline since peaking last summer, but the downturn has been so gradual it wasn’t until I saw the numbers this week that the reality of the situation really hit home.

In the early part of 2016 when the market was escalating at an unsustainable rate, prices were up 40 to 50 per cent over the previous year. It got so crazy that you were hard pressed to find a home in South Delta for under a million bucks. It also got to the point that even though you knew a market correction was in the cards, the gains had been so huge it would take quite some time to give all that new-found equity back, if that was even possible.

Well, we’re not there yet, but the gradual market decline since the province introduced a tax on foreign buyers last summer has put us in that neighbourhood. A chipping away at values by a percentage point or two every month has meant the price of a singlefamily home in Ladner was only 6.8 per cent higher in February than it was 12 months earlier. In Tsawwassen, prices were up just 7.5 per cent from a year earlier.

That’s a far cry from the obscene gains experienced last year, but it should be noted that homes in Ladner are still 52 per cent more expensive than they were just three years ago, while prices are up 58 per cent in Tsawwassen during that time.

I see a couple of takeaways from this situation, the first being that if you’re moving within the region, the fluctuation in the market isn’t a big deal. If you sell high, what you end up buying is also inflated so you’re not necessarily any better off. The same principle applies if you sell low. It’s only if you’re cashing out or moving outside the region that a decline in equity hurts.

The other takeaway is that even though air is being let out of the Metro Vancouver real estate balloon, an affordability crisis still exists. Even these new lower prices continue to be out of reach for a great many, particularly young people who often face an agonizing choice between staying here knowing they have no hope of ever owning a home and moving away in order to do so.

We need more than just a market correction to address that issue.

City references ahead of time only reinforce need for split

n the Feb. 17 edition Doug Husband informed us that it was the last column he would be submitting here.

The former Delta mayor commented that over the years he didn’t use this forum to criticize others for decisions they made, nor for political purpose or personal recognition, and from what I remember of his columns, he was always respectful and informative.

When Ted Murphy asked me if I would be interested in filling the space left by Husband, I recognized this opportunity obligates me to submit columns that focus on local issues and hopefully generate public discussion that shines a light on other options or alternatives, as I like to think outside the box.

Unlike Husband, I most definitely will criticize others for the decisions they make and I will state my reasons why. I am not a member of any political party or group in Delta or B.C. and I’m too old to be interested in personal recognition.

My hope is that open and polite discussion of topics that affect South Delta will encourage the people who live here to become more involved in the improvement and protection of our unique community. Let the discussions begin: My letter in the Feb. 10 edition in response to the notice by the Corporation of Delta regarding

changing its name to the City of Delta was to suggest that if names are to be changed, it would be more advantageous for South Delta and North Delta to separate first and then worry about names.

I went on to list numerous major issues in South Delta that don’t impact North Delta but I forgot to mention we also have different members of the legislative assembly, and for the past eight years South Delta has elected Vicki Huntington as our independent voice in Victoria.

It’s very difficult to think of anything we have in common with North Delta except the mayor and council and Highway 10.

There have been several letters in support of the idea since it was printed and only one, from Ed Ries, indicating that South Delta couldn’t survive separation because of the loss of tax base.

He came to this conclusion with

no discussion of facts, no map showing where Delta would be divided and no feedback from the residents. My letter was to promote discussion and to explore the possibilities, not to jump to conclusions, and if the idea is feasible, to have the question on the next municipal ballot.

An article on the recent economic breakfast stated both the mayor and Liberal cabinet minister Peter Fassbender referred to where we live as a city. I don’t care so much about the name itself but I do care about the fact council released a notice to change the name with no public discussion or information, asking for public support, and then the mayor starts using the term city a full month before the requested public responses are even submitted and tallied.

That complete lack of communication with the people and the brazen attitude that council will get the name changed is a perfect example of why I would like to elect our own council in South Delta that would answer to us.

Approximately 7,000 elector response forms opposing the name change are needed to stop the change from happening.

These forms are available on the Corporation of Delta website.

I have lived in this community for many years and have witnessed Delta police in many roles as they undertake their duties, such as school liaison officers, traffic section, elder resources, missing person criminal investigations, domestic abuse and next of kin notification, to name but a few. I feel to showcase the wonderful work that DPD does in this community with the photo that was chosen for the front page is disgraceful and not at all respectful and could be traumatizing for members in our community.

Neighbourhood going to the dogs

Editor: Something needs to be done about barking dogs in Tsawwassen. There have always been noisy dogs, which is more reflective of the owner than the dog. I obviously have an issue with a particular dog, a German shepherd whose bark rips the sound barrier and tears a hole through my house walls and tests my sanity.

Why is any dog allowed to disturb the peace? The

Delta Community Animal Shelter should have stronger powers to impose fines on dog owners until they comply with Delta’s noise bylaws. Why should one dog owner be able to affect the peace of neighbours around him?

Any owner can train a dog to bark only when it’s warranted. I used to appreciate dogs but this barking dog that ruins my day whenever he decides to sound off has made me

look askance at all dogs now. I feel they should all be collectively transported to the North Pole where they can howl until they’re blue in the face.

This neighbourhood truly has gone to the dogs and I may need to move.

I’ll put up with lawn mowers, car engines, weed wackers, leaf blowers, but a dog’s bark exceeds all these in its hellish, earsplitting volume.

Mark’s on the move but store still locally owned, operated

Mark’s has a new home.

The store has relocated to Tsawwassen Commons after leaving its previous location at Trenant Park Square in Ladner.

It opened last weekend and will have a grand opening event from March 21 to 26.

It was a difficult decision to leave Ladner, said owner Elliott Graham, noting the store had been there for many years but needed to expand.

At just under 11,000 square feet, the new flagship store is double the size of the previous location, he said. Every department has expanded and the store will carry double the inventory, he added.

Graham, who lives in South Delta with his family, said he wants to get the message across the business is still locally owned and operated.

“Even though we’re not in Trenant Park Square any more, we’re still in South Delta,” he said.

Dash for Dogs raises $16,000 Over 400 runners and 200 dogs braved the cold last month to take part in the third annual RunGo Dash for Dogs in Stanley Park. This year’s charity event brought in close to $16,000, which will go directly to support the work of the Delta-based BC & Alberta Guide Dogs.

The non-competitive run is sponsored by RunGo, the local developers of a voice navigation app. The app offers turnby-turn navigation for run-

ners, including those who are visually impaired. The app was on full display as runners navigated their way through the crown jewel of Vancouver, many with the help of their fourlegged family members.

“I developed this app because of Dynasty, a retired guide dog,” says RunGo and Dash for Dogs founder Craig Slagel. “The work they do is amazing and they provided me with a lot of feedback when I was building the app so I

wanted to give something back to them.”

Don’t stop short

My mother once took two of her friends and hiked up Mt. Revelstoke to find the famed alpine meadows which flow from the banks of a beautiful glacial lake.

One of the friends quit halfway up the path, sitting down and declaring his resolve to wait there for them.

The two remaining pressed on, their aging bodies aching, only to come upon a swamp and a sad patch of grass.

Disappointed almost to the point of disgust, they turned around and trudged back to their friend and on down to the parking lot.

John Pippus Band in town for St. Patrick’s Day DAVE WILLIS

The John Pippus Band will pay a visit to the Tsawwassen Legion on St. Patrick’s Day. On tap will be classic rock n’ roll covers from the 1950s onwards as well as some of Pippus’ original rock and R&B tunes.

The Vancouver-based quartet is comprised of Pippus (vocals, guitar), Peg Wilson (bass), Wes Skakun (drums) and Brice Tabish (guitar, vocals).

The members range in age and influences so that shows in their music, says Pippus, noting they bring a lot of ideas to the songs when it comes to his original music.

“We have a lot of fun.

We’re not just bandmates, we’re friends,” he says.

Irish dancers are scheduled to perform at 7 p.m. while the music is set to begin around 7:30 p.m.

Police put call out to artists Department holding Wrap our Ride contest to come up with design for Escalade

he Delta Police Department is putting out a call for young artists to create a design for the department’s newly acquired 2009 Cadillac Escalade.

The Wrap our Ride contest is open to Delta residents who are between 12 and 24.

“There are some very talented young people out there and who better to craft the design for the vehicle than those we are trying to reach,” notes Delta police Chief Neil Dubord.

Ice Hawks a win away from finals

The Delta Ice Hawks’ will have another opportunity tonight to advance to the Pacific Junior Hockey League championship series for the first time in five years.

The Grandview Steelers staved off elimination with a 3-1 game four victory on Wednesday at the Burnaby Winter Club. Game five goes at 7:35 p.m. at the Ladner Leisure Centre. If necessary, the series would continue back in Burnaby on Sunday at 4 p.m. That’s only if the Ice Hawks have trouble solving Matteo Paler-Chow again.

The Grandview rookie goalie was superb in game four to extend his team’s season. The Hawks enjoyed a sizeable advantage in the shot department (33-17), like they have in every game of the series, but only Tetsuya Prior could solve Paler-Chow at the 7:11 mark of the opening period.

The Steelers broke a 1-1 tie just 31 seconds later and Jacob Siebenga capitalized on a twoon-one break midway through the third period for an insurance goal, moments after Delta’s Alex Methorst rang a shot off the crossbar.

“Basically we came across a hot goalie tonight. I figured he would steal them a game sooner or or later and he did tonight,” said Delta GM and head coach Darren Naylor.

After finishing on top of league play with a 24-3-1 record, the U18 squad added the playoff banner thanks to a 3-1 win over Shawnigan Lake on Sunday afternoon in Calgary.

South Delta A1 Storm turned in a solid showing at the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association’s Fraser Valley Tier Atom One Final Four Championships. The hosts finished the playdowns with a 0-2-1 record including a hard-fought 3-2 loss to eventual champion Semiahmoo on Saturday at the Ladner Leisure Centre. South Delta also battled Surrey to a 1-1 tie on Monday night and dropped a 4-2 decision to Langley on Sunday.

South Delta Midget “C” Storm began the girls hockey season with no goalie and not knowing whether they would even have a team or not. They finished as Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey’s regular season and Blue Group playoff champions.

Thanks to the hard work of South Delta Minor president Ken Elmer and Director of Female Hockey Ryan Schram, along with the efforts of the team’s coaches and manager, the Storm were able to sign goaltender Gemma Kozak from North Delta.

Playing 18 games in the regular season, the girls put together an impressive 12-3-3 first place record. They often played with just two forward lines and rotating three defensemen.

The post-season followed where the Storm’s 2-2-2 record was good enough to earn a spot in the championship banner game against the always tough Richmond Ravens. Having gone 1-1-2

Ravens doubled the margin just 2:54 in the second when South Delta launched its comeback.

Meaghan Dillon put her team on the board at the 8:44 mark, then notched the

equalizer with just 71 seconds remaining in the second period.

Affilate player Emma Lee gave the Storm their first lead of the game midway through the third but Richmond answered four minutes later. That set the stage for Lee to score again, this time with what proved to be the game winner in an exciting 4-3 triumph.

The Storm played with a lot of heart, grit, and relied on stellar goaltending to gut it out against a very tough competitor. It was a great end to a season that almost never happened.

The South Delta roster also includes: forwards - Paisley Wallace, Lexine Ashe, Chloe Jacob, Alexandra Allen, Natalee Okamura, Meaghan Dillon and Rachel Benjamin, along with defencemen Tamara Ashe, Hannah Benjamin, Madeline Davies, and Elise Ridley.

MURRAY, Evelyn May April 4, 1933 - February 12, 2017 Our beloved Evelyn passed away peacefully in Delta Hospital’s Irene Thomas Hospice on February 12, 2017 at the age of 83. She is deeply mourned by her sister Elizabeth, brother John, sister-in-law Margaret, nephew Byron, and many loving and caring cousins.

Born in Vancouver, Evelyn attended John Wesley Sexsmith Elementary and John Oliver High School.

She followed her father into the family florist business, where they were well-known proprietors of Murray’s Flower Shop on Main Street in South Vancouver. On her Dad’s retirement in 1970, Evelyn took the shop over, along with its subsidiary wholesale Evergreen Supply Company. She went on to become BC’s largest supplier of Christmas cedar roping and wreaths.

In earlier years, Evelyn was a side drummer with Glengarry Girls and Sons of Scotland Pipe Bands, but it was Scotland’s major sport that captured her ongoing interest and a more than 30 year membership in Newlands Golf and Country Club, dating from when she moved to Langley in 1981.

Evelyn’s 66 years with the Sons of Scotland Benevolent Association played another important role in her life, in both Lord Tweedsmuir and Fraser Glen Camps of the Association. Her long and active service was marked by a presentation at Fraser Glen in November of 2010, when she was awarded her 60 year membership pin. She was proud of reaching this somewhat rare milestone in the annals of the SOS. Evelyn moved from her home in Langley to Tsawwassen in 2010 and subsequently became a part of the St. David’s Anglican Church community.

The Reverend Denise Doerkson of St. David’s conducted a private family burial service at Ocean View Cemetery on February 23. A Celebration of Life for Evelyn will take place in Tsawwassen Springs East Ballroom at 5133 Springs Blvd (Hwy 17 at 52 Street) on Thursday, March 23 from noon to 2pm. Light refreshments will be served. In memory of Evelyn, donations may be made to the Delta Hospice Society, 4635 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Delta, BC, V4K 4L8.

MAZZONE, Frank January 15, 1928 - March 8, 2017 Today the Ladner Leisure Centre, lost a loyal, although unpaying, customer. After 25 years in the Ladner community Frank Mazzone will no longer be causing trouble. Frank died peacefully, surrounded by his family at Royal Columbian Hospital on March 8, 2017. Born on January 15, 1928, Frank touched the lives of all who knew him. As a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he was devoted to his family, and will be remembered for his light hearted sense of humour and his love of breakfast desserts.

Frank is survived in legacy by his wife, Sheila, his children, Julia, Larry and Gina and their loving spouses, Garfield, Levern and Ernie. Cherished Grandfather to Kristin (Terry), Garrett (Christine), Shane, Shannon (Matthew), Ashley and Kelsey. Audrina, Ella, Roman and Evelyn will forever miss Great Grampa Frank’s endless supply of ice cream revels, and playing hide and seek in the kitchen pantry.

Frank lived his life to the fullest, whether at work or at play, he did it all….and he did it with a joke and a smile. With too many accomplishments to list, his greatest was marrying the woman of his dreams, Miss Comox Valley, with the pretty bright eyes.

Frank and Sheila had a love that was electrifying.

They undertook adventures that took travelling to destinations that had both an outlet mall and a golf course. As a life long golfer, he will be sadly missed at Country Meadows Seniors Men’s Golf League, not only for his great sportsmanship, but also his always available “fireball flask.” His bag of found and stolen balls will be used by his family for many years to come.

As he wished, we will not be having a service but instead ask you all to spend a moment with a loved one, with a glass of red or a bowl of ice cream.

“It’s been fabulous”.

JACKSON, Janet Marie (nee Richardson) 1949 - 2017 Predeceased by her loving husband of 45 years, William Jackson. Survived by long time friend and fiancé, Wayne Beatty, children; Scott (Rosanna) Jackson, Christine (Boris) Utzler, grandchildren; Linden (fiancé Azedeh Gagnon), Ashlynn, Matteo and Charlottta, lifelong treasured friend Bim Bouchard, five siblings and their spouses, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Janet was born in Vancouver and raised in Sea Island and Deep Cove. She was an exceptional worldwide citizen, traveling to over 90 countries, including multiple trips throughout Europe with her younger grandchildren. She and Bill were seasoned sailors and travelled for many years throughout the Americas with family and friends, including an extensive trip with her 2 older grandchildren. Janet made friends along the way, including a tight knit boating family. She was passionate about giving back and did so in many ways, including multiple missions for optometry service to third world countries, which included helping establish a permanent eye care facility.

Janet was a steadfast and tenacious person, believing that whatever she lacked, she could make up with hard work and persistence.

The relationship that she shared with her siblings was lovingly uncommon. They brought laughter and light to each other even during the darkest times.

Janet was a lifelong learner who was passionate about gardening, hiking, skiing and sailing. She was fluent in Morse code, as well as many other complicated tasks of sailing. She made the best of even the most challenging situations and rarely complained. She maintained her grace and strength right until the end.

After Bill passed away, Janet was blessed to find love again with her long time friend Wayne Beatty.

Funeral Mass on Thursday, March 16 at 11:00 am at Good Shepherd Roman Catholic Church, 2250 150 St., White Rock, B.C. Condolences may be shared at www.myalternatives.ca

Mary lived the last five years of her life with courage, dignity and sunshine. She will be missed by her husband David Riddell, mother Carole Falck, sister Kathy Horsnell (John), niece Jessica and nephew Liam. After moving from Calgary, AB in 1974, Mary attended Upper Lynn Elementary and Argyle Secondary in North Vancouver. For much of her adult life, she lived in the small community of Ladner where she had many friends.

Mary loved her animals, gardening with her best friend Barbie, and travelling the world with David.
