It’s unlike any other mall

With its huge footprint and mix of retailers, Tsawwassen Mills is a first for B.C.

SANDOR GYARMATI & IAN JACQUES Its uniqueness will keep people coming back. Ivanhoe Cambridge is showing a high degree of confidence in the longterm success of its newly opened Tsawwassen Mills, a mix of premium fashion brands, outlet stores, firstto-market shops, food and entertainment, pointing to how it’s something completely different than any other retail centre in this province. Tsawwassen Mills GM Mark Fenwick said given the success of the company’s other two similar malls in Calgary and Toronto, it has high hopes for Tsawwassen Mills. “Shoppers are going to have a unique experience when they come here. This is a mall like no other that is offered here in the Lower Mainland. There is a great mix of outlets, full prices stores, our anchor stores and the 18 stores that are new to market,” he said. “Whether it is Saks off

A canoe suspended from the ceiling outside Bass Pro Shops draws looks from shoppers. 5th or Pro Hockey Life, or Bass Pro Shops, or the neighbourhoods, there is lots to explore. There is so much to see, whether it is the retailers, the art, the amenities — it’s an easy place to get around and shoppers will have a different experience every time

they visit.” Claude Sirois, president of retail for Ivanhoé Cambridge, said the Mills brand is well recognized as offering a unique combination. “People more and more today are looking for value and the fact that we have

scale allows us to offer something that’s unique. We have 18 first-to-market retailers that are part of this project today, including the Bass Pro, so we are very, very optimistic we will find our place in this market, and consumers are going to love every-

thing about it, as per our marketing campaign,” he said. The Tsawwassen First Nation, meantime, is set to become even more of a retail hub once Tsawwassen Commons is completed next door to Tsawwassen Mills.

Many retailers at Mills are in B.C. for the first time

CONTINUED from Page 1 Once inside, the excitement level was high as the throng dispersed to various stores, many of the retailers in B.C. for the first time. Hundreds stood in line waiting to swipe bar codes, which they had received online or through other mall promotions, for their chance at winning a $10,000 shopping spree. Stores also had their own promotions.

Some retailers were busier than others but almost all had a steady stream of customers. The biggest lineup was seen outside the Michael Kors outlet, while Lululemon athletica also had a sizable lineup. Many others were doing brisk business and had lengthy lineups for their cashiers, including the DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse and Saks Off 5th. Bass Pro Shops was also quite busy with many

people wanting to check out the unique décor and take photos of the huge fish tank. It didn’t take too long for the 1,100-seat food hall to be jammed. Almost every shopper who talked to the Optimist on opening day had positive things to say, to varying degrees, when it came to the deals, while all seemed impressed with the selection of retailers. Although parking got

tight as the day went on, traffic flow in and out of the mall was fairly smooth and Highway 17 didn’t experience the massive backups that were anticipated. However, that could change this Thanksgiving long weekend. During the opening ceremonies, Daniel Fournier, chairman and CEO of Ivanhoe Cambridge, couldn’t contain his enthusiasm when describing his company’s

$600-million project. “Wow, what a day, what a place. This is emotional for us at Ivanhoe Cambridge. This is spectacular,” he said. Praising their partnership, TFN Chief Bryce Williams described the project as a hallmark for a successful and sustainable future for his people. “We are proud to welcome the neighbouring communities onto our lands,” he said.

What Mills shoppers are saying Optimist reporters Sandor Gyarmati and Ian Jacques caught up with a couple dozen shoppers during opening day Wednesday to get their take on Tsawwassen

Mills, the 1.2-million-square-foot addition to Greater Vancouver’s retail landscape. Here’s what they had to say about the $600-million mall:

Linda Rankin and daughter Shonna Atkinson made the trip from Coquitlam.

Has the mall lived up to your expectations? Tanya Corbet got a deal on shoes.

What’s the best bargain you found? Tanya Corbet Tsawwassen First Nation “I got a pair of good shoes at a good price. Yes, I was looking for shoes.” Ann Muirhead Ladner “We went to Guess and we found 40 per cent off on top of the price. There’s a pinwheel you get to spin and it gives you something additional off. So we got

some jeans.” Vanessa Morrell Tsawwassen “I’m very excited. I found my favourite pair of running shoes for like 70 per cent off. It’s really good and I just got started.” Brenda Godin Aldergrove “It also took me three hours to get in and out of the Lululemon, probably the best bargain.”

Linda Rankin Coquitlam “Oh yes it is. It’s a very well designed mall and the food is reasonably priced and there’s lots of seating.” Dorothy Robb Tsawwassen “Yes, I’m very excited. We’ll be back tomorrow. This is a treat for us. But I am concerned about some of our own stores in Tsawwassen.” Eileen Varil North Vancouver “I think it’s a beautiful mall. I think they have lots of interesting stores but

I’m not sure about the bargains.” Thomas Ellis Tsawwassen “Absolutely. There’s a lot more to do in here than go in all the shops.” Tim Lundquist Surrey “There are stores here you don’t see in other malls, so yes. The Bass Pro Shops in Calgary is a little larger and little better selection but this one has just as nice a layout and better selection on fishing gear.”

Prince George resident Mike Cole stopped in to check out Bass Pro Shops.

What store were you looking forward to visiting? Patty Crich Parksville “I used to live in Ladner and came over just for this. We want to hit Marshalls and Designer Shoe Warehouse and Saks (Off) 5th Avenue. Those are stores you don’t normally see elsewhere.” Mike Cole Prince George “Definitely the Bass Pro Shops. We were on our way to Victoria and thought we’d come to Tsawwassen to do some shopping.”

Amanda Harris White Rock “I am hoping to check out Marshalls. That Bass Pro also looks really cool, actually. This place is pretty big and amazing, so we’ll be looking at a few places.” Susan Blakney Tsawwassen “I had no idea what stores were here but wanted to see. I have to admit I’ve been pleasantly surprised. There’s places I’ve never even heard of, but is there going to be a Walmart?”

Bass Pro Shops was a must see for Courtland McKenzie of Tsawwassen.

What store impressed you the most? Kristyna Walsh Ladner “A few of the stores made a real effort to make it a unique experience and you get a much different vibe than at some of the other malls.” Christelle Termulo Burnaby “I really wanted to check out the Nike store. It was good. Some excellent deals.” Renee Coady Tsawwassen “DSW – Designer Shoe Warehouse was our first stop and we all got free

shoes thanks to the gift cards.” Sharon Tica Richmond “DSW was my first stop. It was so busy, but it was cool to look around and there were some great deals.” Courtland McKenzie Tsawwassen “Bass Pro was a must see for me and my friends. We must have spent like 45 minutes to an hour inside the store and I’m not even into that kind of stuff. But I want to go back because it’s just so cool.

Rag Muni (right) of Surrey took the day off work to visit Tsawwassen Mills on opening day.

How much of an effort did you make to get to the mall? Pat Wolchuk Victoria “We came on the ferry this morning specifically for the opening. We were walk-ons on the ferry and they picked us up in the free shuttle, gave us a welcome bag and a gift card. We’re both feeling pretty royal.” Jag Gill Richmond “The drive out here was good this morning. The tunnel traffic was not too bad and it was easy to get around in the parking lot. There is lots of parking, which was good.”

Allison Krause Tsawwassen “I got here are at a quarter to eight and was 639th out of 1,000 in line, so I got the free gift card.” Rag Muni Surrey “Traffic was good. I took the day off because I wanted to check it out and see what it was all about.” Peter Yu Vancouver “The traffic getting here was not too bad, but it’s a hike walking inside for sure.”

Pat Lee of Ladner liked the natural feel and all the artwork.

What do you think of the overall appearance of the mall? Sonja Gill Richmond “The mall has a real nice feel to it. The floors look fantastic and the biggest thing for me is the wonderful TFN culture that is all around. That is really quite appealing. I will come back for sure.” Ken Fok Richmond “It is a different layout than in most malls and I like that, but the Mills map is wrong. HMV was the store that I really wanted to get to and I was ticked off a bit that it was located wrong on the map, so that was a little bit of a negative impression right off the

bat. Plus I asked customer service and they didn’t know either.” Pat Lee Ladner “The look is very appealing. The natural feel and the artwork is very nice. It has been an interesting day. I will, of course, be back because I have my $50 coupon to spend.” Kandie Kelly Tsawwassen “I love the natural light and the wood certainly sets off a nice feeling when you are inside. I’m also looking forward to walking around and seeing all the artwork.”

Delta woman chosen as a Daughter of the Vote Elinor McNamee-Annett off to Ottawa next year IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

A Delta woman is among a group of 42 diverse females from across B.C. who have been selected as Daughters of the Vote to represent the province in Ottawa on International Women’s Day 2017. Elinor McNameeAnnett, who graduated from the SFU School for International Studies, works at the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade where she helps run leadership programs. She is passionate about global issues and empowering youth to be difference makers. “I really believe in what Equal Voice’s mandate is for the project — supporting young women to take their seat in political processes early on, which will lead to a more inclusive government down the line,” she said. In June, Equal Voice launched a national politi-

cal initiative designed to encourage more young women to become politically engaged. McNameeAnnett said Elinor she filled out McNameethe online Annett application and was thrilled she was selected. She said she sees this as an opportunity to get equipped with tools on how she can better promote and support women in politics. “I think women still face enormous barriers when it comes to politics even just informal politics, let alone running for office,” she said. “When you look at the stats it’s quite evident that equality for women in politics just doesn’t exist. Until we can have open, honest and transparent conversations about gender roles in society and politics, women will continue to face these bar-

riers.” Daughters of the Vote will mark 2017 as the 100th anniversary of some women attaining the right to vote in federal elections as well as celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday. On International Women’s Day in March 2017, young women from every riding in Canada will gather in Ottawa for a special leadership conference, including a historic moment when the delegates will fill all 338 seats of the House of Commons. “I think being a part of the discussion is a great first step. I want to bring my local perspective of growing up in Delta, but also my own experiences of study and travel and contribute globally to the discussion,” McNameeAnnett said. Equal Voice is a multipartisan organization dedicated to promoting the election of more women.

aking every vote count is a laudable goal, but the last thing we need in this country is more elections. The federal government is in the process of consulting Canadians on whether they’d like to scrap our firstpast-the-post system in favour of something that’s more reflective of the way we actually vote. This initiative is underway because, without fail, in every election certain parties, and they change from election to election, get more seats than their popular vote warrants and others get fewer seats than they deserve. The governing Liberals are just the latest example of this inequity as they claimed almost 55 per cent of the 338 seats in the House of Commons in last fall’s election despite receiving less than 40 per cent of the popular vote. At the other end of the spectrum, the Greens elected just one member even though their popular vote percentage warranted about 10. There’s an inherent unfairness in the system, so even though the Liberals benefitted from it, they deserve marks for entertaining a possible change. The most likely option is some sort of proportional representation that would assign seats based on popular vote, which ensures the House of Commons better reflects voters’ wishes, but it comes with its own drawbacks, including lack of local representation and, more importantly, what would undoubtedly be a never-ending string of minority governments. In the seven federal elections over the past 20 years, no party has received as much as 41 per cent of the vote, so under proportional representation, each time we would be left with a minority government. That isn’t necessarily a negative if all those sent to Ottawa realize there’s a need to compromise to get things accomplished, but given recent history, that seems as likely as the Canucks capturing the Stanley Cup this season. We endured four elections in seven years from 2004 to 2011 thanks to dysfunctional minority governments, so I’d have deep reservations about embracing a voting system that pretty much guarantees more of the same. There’s no denying the first-past-thepost system isn’t ideal, but I wonder whether this country has an appetite for an election every other year.

Dutch delegation interested in forward-thinking schools

A

delegation from the Netherlands was in Delta last week to tour a few schools and learn about the Ministry of Education’s new curriculum. The new curriculum suggests that to prepare students for the future, “it must be learner-centered and flexible, and maintain a focus on literacy and numeracy, while supporting deeper learning through conceptbased and competency-driven approaches.” Sander Dekker, secretary of education, culture and science for the Netherlands, and about a dozen other educators and officials were hosted by Dianne Turner, chief educator for the Ministry of Education and former superintendent for the Delta School District. One of the stops on the tour was the newly opened Farm Roots Mini School run out of the former Boundary Beach Elementary site. On the day of the visit, the 24 Grade 10 to 12 students that are participating in the first cohort of the program had just finished creating several raised garden beds that will augment their field work and provide opportunity to get some seed in ground for a late fall harvest and for overwintering crops. The young farmers planned the style of their beds and built them using chop and table saws to cut their own lumber and screw everything together. Superintendent Doug

Community Comment MIKE SCHNEIDER

Sheppard, assistant superintendent Brad Bauman, board of education chair Laura Dixon, district principal of inquiry and innovation Brooke Moore, myself and several other district officials and educators were on hand at Farm Roots as well, and everyone had a brief opportunity to mingle with the kids. The Dutch delegation has travelled the world over the years to study how other jurisdictions teach their children. They have been here before and came back for a closer look at how the new curriculum is being implemented. They are in the midst of changing the curriculum in their country and really like what we are doing here. And why not? The Delta School District is embracing the new curriculum and is actively engaging its students. Project Pickle and the Farm Roots program are affording a new learning platform for our young students. In accordance with new ministry

standards, programming in our community is offering “opportunity for deeper learning through doing rather through passive listening or reading,” according to the ministry. The delegation heard how we try to teach our kids about farming, nutrition and jobs in the broader food economy and how important the sector is to our overall economic health. The three main principles of “Know, Do, Understand” are easily delivered on school farms across Delta and concept-based, competency-based curriculum is relevantly offered within the context of farming and food. There is still lots to do in B.C. and right here in Delta but it is encouraging to see that important people from other countries are taking a very close look at the “Bold Vision” that is taught in the Delta School District. We start them early here in elementary school and are attempting to provide a clear path for our kids to pursue an interest in food and farming in high school as well. The recent partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University will hopefully encourage our kids to further their interest in horticulture and eventually gain meaningful employment in this $15 billion sector of our economy. Mike Schneider is founder of Project Pickle and likes to write about growing, cooking and eating food. He is a Jamie Oliver Food Revolution ambassador.

Delta continues arts council’s work

Editor: I was invited to the fifth anniversary of the Corporation of Delta taking charge of the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. It was a pleasure to take part in that celebration. At this time, I would like to give kudos to the Corporation of Delta and the program coordinators at both centres — Jacqueline Hamlin (Tsawwassen Arts Centre) and Lisa Doepker (Firehall

Centre for the Arts) — for the following: • Offering programs that focus on the visual, performing and literary arts. • Continuing the exhibitions, concerts and other events that are appropriate for the arts centres. • Constantly evaluating current programs and events while trying new ventures as well as listening to suggestions from the public. • Accommodating other

large groups in the community. With the wonderful arts centre staff, the Corporation of Delta is doing a fine job of maintaining the cultural programs and nurturing the growth in that rich area. I am delighted to see the work the Delta Arts Council worked hard to establish for decades is honoured with such commitment and support. Patti McGregor

Earthwise grower grateful for the opportunity

Editor: Having a small plot of land at Earthwise in Boundary Bay has been a privilege and a gift. Many of us have developed and/or renewed our connection to the earth. My eight years of dreaming, planting, harvesting and sharing has been completely satisfying.

From this involvement I have experienced a sense of control over my life, the enjoyment of eating organic, homegrown food and belonging to an active, progressive community. This has been a priceless time of devoted commitment to something I believe is good for the body and soul.

Now, as changes in the landscape are rapidly taking place, I will hang on to my social connections and remember to be open to the new possibilities ahead. Perhaps, we have learned the value of sharing something worthwhile to many in our world. Abby Armstrong

57th Street resident concerned by increasing traffic

Editor: I live on 57th Street in Ladner and have been a resident of Delta since 1970. I am greatly concerned

about the amount of traffic currently going down 57th Street towards the tunnel and the amount of traffic that will be traversing 57th Street when the Captain’s

Cove development is complete. What plans are in place by Delta to limit, slow and handle the traffic volume? Carolien van Halderen

Delta Hospital Foundation has announced that MK Delta Lands Group will be returning for the fourth consecutive year as presenting sponsor of the annual Moonlight Gala. The prestigious event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 5 and will transform the Tsawwassen Springs ballroom into Mount Olympus for a night of entertainment all in support of Delta Hospital. “We were only too happy to step in once again as presenting sponsor to show our support for the Hospital and our community,” says Joanne Barnett, president of MK Delta Lands Group. “Delta Hospital provides access to vital health care services when we most need it. We see the new residential care facility as an important investment, one that will be integral for many Delta families in generations to come.” With the support of MK Delta Lands Group and the community, the 2015 Moonlight Gala raised a record breaking

Bling Bling

Domestic Short Hair, Black, Neutered Male Adult, (Approximately 6 years old)

Bling Bling came to the shelter as a trapped stray after he ventured into a trap at a colony we were trapping. Bling Bling had a broken tooth when he arrived at the shelter and his owners were unable to claim him. Bling Bling has had a root canal to save his fractured tooth and has had full blood work and a dental cleaning to bring his health up to date. This handsome cat doesn’t seem to like the company of other cats and would probably do best in a home with no dogs or young children. A home in a safe neighbourhood where Bling Bling could venture outside would be suitable for this kitty. Bling Bling is the quiet, silent type that enjoys head butts and petting. His quiet nature makes him a very endearing soul to be around.

This year funds raised will go towards building a new residential care facility and purchasing a much needed echocardiogram. “Last year’s fundraiser is going to be hard to beat, but with MK Delta Lands Group presenting and lead sponsors Shato Holdings, Port of Vancouver and Ocean Trailer, along with rest of our generous sponsors, I think we have a chance,” says gala co-chair Don Sangster. “The committee has been working hard to create a fun evening worthy of the Greek gods for all our sponsors, community leaders and donors to Delta Hospital that will be in attendance,” says fellow gala co-chair Pam Paton. “You do not want to miss this sell-out event.” There are only a handful of tables left for this year’s Moonlight Gala. has ceased, and demand is producing numbers in line with what we’ve seen historically. It seems dramatic, as would anything else that wasn’t the incredible, continuous uptick we’ve seen for the last 18 months,” said board president Charles Wiebe. In North Delta, the “average price” was $852,346 for September. That’s up over 23 per cent in a year, but down 10.6 per cent from August.

The South Delta real estate market may have cooled but it’s still got a little sizzle left compared to other areas. The latest statistics from the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver show the number of homes sold in Metro Vancouver last month continued to drop but the so-called “benchmark price” remained stable. Home sales in September saw a decrease of 32.6 per cent from the sales recorded in September 2015 and a decrease of 9.5 per cent compared to August 2016. Last month’s sales were also 9.6 per cent below the 10-year sales average for the month. “Supply and demand conditions differ today depending on property type,” board president Dan Morrison said. “We’re seeing more demand for condominiums and townhomes today than in the detached home market.” As far as South Delta, the benchmark price for a single-family detached house in Tsawwassen last month was $1,269,700, a 1.8 per cent increase from the previous month. It’s up 36.6 per cent in the past year, although most of that increase occurred earlier this year when prices were

Sunshine Coast. Meanwhile, the situation is much different in North Delta. According to the Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, housing sales in the Fraser Valley continued to slow throughout September, dropping below the 10-year sales average for the month for the first time this year. “What we’re experiencing is an environment where the summer sizzle

climbing fast. In Ladner, the benchmark price stood at $1,064,800, a 3.3 per cent increase over the previous month and 36 per cent hike over a year. Ladner’s one-month increase was the highest in the board’s coverage area as prices in most communities remained relatively stable. Tsawwassen’s onemonth increase was third highest, behind the

The award was given out during the Union of British Columbia Municipalities annual convention in Victoria. By working closely with the Delta Chamber of Commerce, Ladner Business Association, Tourism Delta, and the Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association, Delta has been able to support these organizations and individual businesses in a variety of ways, including social media campaigns, business seminars and workshops, community fairs and festivals, and trade and investment missions and initiatives. Delta has also embraced new technology with the BizPal permitting and licensing program; eMobile, ePlan, and eInspection tools; and online business renewal to help reduce red tape for the small business sector. In addition, Delta has adopted the South Delta Business Sustainability

Strategy to revitalize the downtown environments of Ladner and Tsawwassen and attract new businesses in response to the new TFN malls. Delta also has created a variety of economic incentive and tax revitalization programs to encourage development in key business areas throughout the municipality. Municipal hall maintains ongoing dialogue with key business leaders through recurring Mayor’s Economic Breakfast meetings. The meetings provide local business leaders with the opportunity to provide feedback and voice concerns directly to Delta’s elected officials and senior staff members as well as hear from government representatives at various levels. The most recent meeting, held earlier this year in Ladner, had a theme of “Delta is open for business.”

Live Green

Teach kids to live in eco-friendly way

Protecting the planet is a global responsibility that requires the cooperation of every man, woman and child. Many eco-conscious adults likely adapted their lifestyles over the last several decades, when the movement to live in a more eco-friendly way took off. Parents who want to instill that lesson in their children at an early age can do so in various ways: • Turn time outdoors with your kids into teach-

ing opportunities. The great outdoors provides a great opportunity to teach kids about the environment and how to protect it. • Make recycling a priority at home. One of the easiest ways to get even young kids actively involved in protecting the planet is to get them to recycle. • Use a water filter at home. Water filters also provide a simple way to teach kids about the

value of protecting the planet. According to The Water Project, a nonprofit organization that provides reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, bottles used to package water take more than 1,000 years to biodegrade. • Another fun way to teach kids to be more ecofriendly is to stop driving everywhere and ride bikes when possible. Short car trips burn substantial amounts of fuel.

A cleaner, greener approach to growth. We’re honoured to announce that our

commitment to be a Sustainable Gateway.

A new adventure for Amanda Children’s author, inspired by her own travels, adds fifth entry to novel series DAVE WILLIS

hildren’s author Darlene Foster has added another entry to her travel adventure series. Amanda on the Danube: The Sounds of Music follows the 12-year-old main character on an adventure with her best friend Leah aboard an elegant riverboat along Europe’s second-longest river. “It is a fast-paced, fun and intriguing story with some European history tucked in,” says Foster, who has a book launch event scheduled for next month at Albany Books in Tsawwassen. The title marks the fifth entry into this series and Foster says she thinks it’s the best one yet. “In this book, Amanda travels to three different countries, Germany, Austria and Hungary. On her travels down the Danube, Amanda learns some interesting things about each place she visits while the friendship between her and Leah is tested,” Foster explains. “For the first time, all four of the parents are along for the trip and we get a glimpse of the relationships, especially between Amanda and her mother.” She notes there are, of course, new characters who appear in the story but some may not be who they appear. Foster describes her main character as spunky,

Darlene Foster’s latest book is titled Amanda on the Danube: The Sounds of Music. inquisitive, adventurous and brave when she needs to be. She adds Amanda is also very caring and doesn’t like to upset people, even though she does at times. Foster’s books are inspired by her own travels around the world. “I did a Danube river cruise four years ago and loved it. I fell in love with that part of the world and

enjoyed all the places we visited,” she says. “There is so much history and I wished the walls could talk. There must be many stories there. I must say, Budapest was a pleasant surprise. I did not expect it to be so amazing. I had fun writing the book and reliving my trip.” The book was released last weekend and is published by Ladner’s Central

Avenue Publishing. “The Amanda series appeals to kids of all ages, by bringing together the elements important to today’s children,” says Central Avenue’s Michelle Halket. “Darlene introduces readers to countries they might like to visit or perhaps have already been. She incorporates learning about new countries with the adventure of

travel and a fun mystery that needs to be solved.” Foster, who says she’s “a bit of a nomad right now,” divides her time between Spain, B.C. and Alberta and stays in Tsawwassen when she’s in the Lower Mainland. She has a special book launch event at Albany Books, 1240-56th St., Tsawwassen, on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Tsawwassen teen shares love for guitar

Carter Stefan is just 13 years old but he’s already released his first all-instrumental album IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

You might not know the name Carter Stefan yet, but you will soon as the Tsawwassen teen is starting to make his mark in the music world. At just 13, Stefan is already an accomplished classical/jazz guitarist. Last year he wrote 12 original compositions, recorded each song, performed all the accompanying music and then released the allinstrumental album Carter Stefan — Twelve by Twelve two months before his 13th birthday. Stefan first picked up the guitar when he was 10 and was instantly hooked. “It started with some pretty easy stuff and then I was put in front of an audience and I made like $200,” he recalled. “I thought, ‘Wow,’ this is pretty awesome. From there I just loved performing and sharing my music with other people.”

Stefan’s music encompasses many styles, including country, reggae, classical and some Delta Blues. Besides the guitar, Stefan played the ukulele, piano, trumpet, percussion, base and various other sound effects for the album. His label Kave Sound Studios recently submitted the album to the Junos for consideration for Best Album of the Year. “I’m really stoked — I hope it gets nominated,” Stefan said. He said he really doesn’t know where his music comes from. “I just sit down with the guitar and I just play. It just comes out of my mind and my instrument. I don’t know how it happens, it just comes out,” he said. Stefan has already built up quite a community following with numerous private performances, the Special Olympics Delta gala dinner, the South Delta Jazz Festival, the Grand Prix of Art and a

a lot of fun,” he said. “I really like playing in front of these people. They are nice. The staff here are great too. I just love volunteering.”

And the residents get just as much out of the experience as Stefan does, according to recreation manager Tim Bowman. “It’s right before dinner and it can be a very calming experience for the residents,” said Bowman. “The first time he came here last year he just blew us away. I asked him back right away and it has turned into a regular Monday gig. He’s a super nice kid too. It’s nice to see a young man being such a devoted volunteer.” Balancing his music, school and finding time to hang out with friends is a constant challenge, but one Stefan relishes. “I really love what I’m doing and I want to be the best guitarist in the world. To do that I know that I might have to make a few sacrifices, but that’s OK,” he said. “I just love playing music. I can’t see myself doing anything else.” Check out http://www. carterstefan.com for more about the artist.

Vigorous exercise can reduce workout time

Studies done by Health Canada tell us that in order to stay healthy we need 60 minutes of physical activity every day. This amount of exercise has been proven to reduce our risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) as well as other problems such as Type 2 diabetes, obesity and certain forms of cancer. Health Canada also tells us (because they’re bossy like that) that as we progress to more intense activities, we can cut our physical exercise time down to 30 minutes, four days a week. So, instead of an hour of activity a day, by increasing the intensity we can burn the same amount of calories and increase our fitness in half the time. Now, you tell me, which is easier to fit into your schedule: 30 minutes a few times a week or 60 minutes everyday? There are also a number of scientific articles that support vigorous aerobic exercise too. The benefits include greater improvements in aerobic fitness, a lower body weight and greater reduction in CHD risks. Take, for an example, a person who walks for an

Couple home on the range at Siwash Lake JANE CASSIE

Optimist contributor

His cocoa brown eyes appear despondent, yet when glancing my way he blinks flirtatiously. He inches closer, gently nudging my side. There’s an instant connection. “What’s with the long face, Dude?” I ask, while brushing a wisp of silver hair away from his freckled brow. Although he doesn’t reply, I know how to make him happy. And before long, I have him eating out of the palm of my hand. Smoke, a new found friend, is my equestrian partner during our threeday stint at Siwash Lake in B.C.’s Cariboo. And while feeding him a couple of hay-blend biscuits, my feelings of trepidation begin to wane. Although my husband is ready to live out his elusive cowboy dream, I’ve arrived with some uncertainty about straddling any saddle. “Don’t worry, you’ll feel comfortable before heading out,” our guide says consolingly. “It all starts

with learning about horsemanship.” Although not sporting the typical chaps and spurs, this confident wrangler could pass as a modern day Gene Autry in his plaid shirt and widebrimmed Stetson. He goes on to explain that Siwash offers one of the best riding programs around, and once confident, guests are free to venture out on their own. “As well as the 160 Siwash-owned acres, we have access to trails that wind through the encompassing 80,000 acres of Crown land,” our guide informs us after providing step-by-step instruction that includes everything from hoof to hair care. By the time I’ve climbed aboard my “Flee Bit Paint,” every detail has been dealt with, right down to the final saddle cinch that will keep me strategically on top. I squirm into the supple leather saddle, and take a deep breath of fresh country air. In a matter of minutes I’ve been transformed from a city slicker to a Cariboo cowgirl who

grasslands where the cattle and deer love to graze. It’s a wilderness setting of unparalleled beauty — untouched, peaceful and spectacular. Part of Siwash Lake’s splendor can be attributed to its pristine location. Although just a five-anda-half-hour drive from Vancouver and 32 kilometres (20 miles) east of 70 Mile House, the final 20

travel minutes are bridged by remote country roads. The 7,000-square-foot lodge is hewn from the land itself, and while perched on a grassy knoll, offers us postcard lake views. Several luxurious safari-inspired tents nestle amid the firs on a ridge overlooking the lake and wilderness, and a genuine barn loft suite offers sweeping vistas of the

home meadow. Mouth-watering sensations that could rival the house of James Beard are served at the canvas-clad, fine dining Pavilion atop the ridge. Everything from the farm fresh breakfasts to innovative entrees is exquisitely presented. And discreetly delivered to our door each morning is a wake up tray, sporting a thermos of coffee and freshly made muffins. As well as covering the countryside on Smoke’s strong back, we paddled shimmering Siwash Lake, hiked the interpretive Siwash trail and had hammock time in the grassy meadow. A helicopter safari, wilderness survival, mountain biking, waterfall hike, forest yoga, 3-D archery, marksmanship and reeling in a few fat trout will have to wait until next time. Runners get ready to hit the course in last Friday’s annual Boundary Bay Cross-Country Meet at Boundary Bay Regional Park. More photos at www.delta-optimist.com.

Kids run cross-country for Hannah Over 1,000 students take part in annual meet in Boundary Bay Over 1,000 kids from 13 elementary schools took part in the seventh annual Boundary Bay CrossCountry Meet at Boundary Bay Regional Park last Friday. The meet is hosted by the RunInn Delta and the Sacred Heart School parents and featured 12 races for boys and girls from Grade 2 to Grade 7. The kids run between 1,300 and 1,800 metres depending on their age and every participant enjoyed a

barbecue lunch after their race hosted by the TOOBs. “We had a perfect day for racing,” says meet director Kevin Ridley. “We were very excited by the great turnout and we were so lucky that it was a sunny, warm day for the kids to run.” The event is also a fundraiser for the Hannah’s Heroes Foundation and every child who ran donated $1 to the charity. Combined with support from sponsors, the meet

ended up raising about $1,200 for the local charity. The meet was sponsored by New Balance, Muscle Memory, Sungod Physio, DNA Data, Brent Derrheim Golf, Service Master, the TOOBs, SaveOn-Foods and the RunInn Delta. “We have to thank all of our sponsors who gave time and money to help put on this event,” says Ridley. “We could not do this without our sponsors and all of our volunteers

who helped out on the day.” The main goal of the meet is to encourage participation in order to introduce kids of all abilities to a fun day of fitness. “This is a great event for our local community and it’s great to see more of the local schools show up this year,” says Ridley. “We had five local elementary schools and our goal is to get all the South Delta schools to participate next year.”

The little apple tree in the back yard produced so many “McIntosh” apples this year we were able to share applesauce with the whole family. The “Concord” grapes, well, let’s just say, the jelly will be in everyone’s stocking. It has been an abundant year — as the Psalm writer says, “May there be abundance of grain in the land; may it wave on the tops of the mountains; may its fruit be like Lebanon; and may people blossom in the cities like the grass of the field.” (Ps 72:16) That’s why we give thanks, to celebrate the abundance set before us — remembering that in our embattled world there

are many who do not have enough. But, to whom do we give thanks, and are we satisfied to just say thank you and then “dig in?” Some families make it

their tradition on this Thanksgiving weekend to share their thanksgiving by making an offering to someone else, perhaps it’s a hard working young family making “ends meet” or perhaps it is a gift to the local food bank, serving many on our behalf. “But as for me, my prayer is to you, O Lord. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love, answer me.” (Psalm 69:13) This year, I want to give thanks to the God who creates all the goodness of the earth. Then I want to give thanks especially to God for the love that goes with the gift of God’s grace and abundance … overflowing.

REPLACE SMOKE ALARMS EVERY 10 YEAR FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCTOBER 9-15, 2016

firepreventionweek.org

Don’t wait — check date on smoke alarms Fire Prevention Week offers reminder to people to replace smoke alarms every 10 years firefighters, elementary students will learn about the importance of having a working smoke alarm in every bedroom and general fire safety. Children will also have the opportunity to become the Chief-ForA-Day on Nov. 4.

For more information about fire safety, visit the Delta Fire & Emergency Services’ website at www. delta.ca or call 604-9468541. To learn more about smoke alarms, visit www. firepreventionweek.org and www.sparky.org/fpw.

To ensure they’re in good working order, smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years after the date they’re manufactured. Smoke alarms save lives, but did you know that smoke alarms have an expiration date? Smoke alarms that are more than 10 years old should be replaced. That is the message Delta firefighters are promoting during this year’s Fire Prevention Week. From Oct. 9 to 15, fire departments across North America will be working to educate the public about

the importance of fire safety and the importance of having working smoke alarms. Fire Prevention Week is held annually and highlights an important theme in fire education. This year’s theme, “Don’t wait—check the date!”, focuses on raising awareness that smoke alarms expire and to replace smoke alarms every 10 years to keep families safe.

To find out how old your smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm. The alarm should be replaced 10 years from that date. Students in kindergarten to Grade 3 will be invited to enter to win the Fire Prevention Week 2016 iPad contest. The iPad contest is jointly sponsored by the Office of the Fire Commissioner, the BC Fire Chiefs’ Association,

Proud Supporters of the Delta Fire Department

the Fire Training Officers’ Association of BC, the Fire Prevention Officers’ Association of BC, Fortis BC and First Nations’ Emergency Services Society. A student in each of B.C.’s five fire regions will win one iPad, as well as one student from a First Nations-operated school. Delta Fire Rescue & Emergency Services will once again be delivering the annual Fire & Life Safety Program to schools during Fire Prevention Week and through the month of October. Surviving a fire in the home increases with a little advanced planning. home fire escape plan. Reduce your family’s risk from fire by following the tips below: Smoke Alarms • Make sure everyone in your home can recognize the sound of the smoke alarm and knows exactly what to do when it sounds. • Install working smoke alarms near sleeping areas and on every level of your home. For maximum protection, also install smoke alarms in bedrooms. • Smoke alarms should be tested and maintained in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Alarms should be tested once a month by pushing the test button and listenSpecializing in:

ing for the alarm. • For battery operated smoke alarms, replace batteries at least once a year or for extended life batteries, refer to manufacturer’s instructions. Batteries should also be replaced when the smoke alarm makes a chirping sound. • Smoke alarms should be cleaned at least every six months by gently vacuuming the exterior. • Smoke alarms do wear out and should be replaced at least every 10 years. • To find out how old a smoke alarm is, look at the date of manufacture on the back of the alarm; the alarm should be replaced

10 years from that date. Home Fire Escape Plans • Create a home fire escape plan showing two ways out of every room. Practise your plan with your entire family by having a home fire drill at least twice a year. • Choose a family meeting place a safe distance away from your home. All family members should be taught to report to the family meeting place. • One person should then go to a neighbour’s house or nearest phone to call 9-1-1. Fire Prevention Week

Fast facts about fire and its many causes

Home fires • Half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. when most people are asleep. Only one in five home fires were reported during these hours. • One-quarter of home fire deaths were caused by fires that started in the bedroom. Another quarter resulted from fires in the living room, family room or den. • Three out of five home fire deaths happen from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. • Cooking equipment is the leading cause of home fire injuries, followed by heating equipment. • Smoking materials are the leading cause of home fire deaths. • From 2009-2013, roughly one of every 335 households had a reported home fire per year. Smoke alarms • Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. • In fires considered large enough to activate the smoke alarm, hardwired alarms operated 94 per cent of the time, while battery powered alarms operated 80 per cent of the time. • When smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected or dead. • An ionization smoke alarm is generally more responsive to flaming fires and a photoelectric smoke alarm is generally more responsive to smoldering fires. For the best protection, or where extra time is needed to awaken or assist others, both types of smoke alarms are recommended. Heating • The leading factor contributing to heating equipment fires was failure to clean. This usually involved creosote build-up in chimneys. • Portable or fixed space heaters, including wood stoves, were involved in one-third (33 per cent) of home heating fires and four out of five (81 per cent) home heating deaths. • Just over half of home heating fire deaths resulted from fires caused by heating equipment too close to things that can burn, such as upholstered furniture, clothing, mat-

tresses or bedding. • In most years, heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires, fire deaths and fire injuries. Cooking • Unattended cooking was a factor in one-third of reported home cooking fires. • Two-thirds of home cooking fires started with ignition of food or other cooking materials.

• Ranges accounted for three of every five (61 per cent) home cooking fire incidents. Ovens accounted for 13 per cent. • Children under five face a higher risk of nonfire burns associated with cooking and hot food and drinks than of being hurt in a cooking fire. • Clothing was the item first ignited in less than one per cent of home cooking fires, but these

incidents accounted for 18 per cent of the cooking fire deaths. • More than half of people injured in home fires involving cooking equipment were hurt while attempting to fight the fire themselves. • Frying is the leading activity associated with cooking fires. Smoking materials • Most deaths in home smoking-material fires

were caused by fires that started in bedrooms (40 per cent) or living rooms, family rooms or dens (35 per cent). • Sleep was a factor in roughly one-third of the home smoking material fire deaths. • Possible alcohol impairment was a factor in one in five (19 per cent) of home smoking fire deaths. • One out of four fatal victims of smoking-mate-

Candles * During 2009-2013, candles caused three per cent of home fires, three per cent of home fire deaths, six per cent of home fire injuries and five per cent of direct property damage from home fires. Champions to be honoured Delta Sports Hall of Fame committee will recognize recipients at gala this month

The Delta Sports Hall of Fame committee is recognizing excellence in and out of the field of play over the past 12 months with its 2016 Sports Champions recipients. Winners in the various categories will be recognized at a gala banquet on Saturday, Oct. 22 at the Coast Tsawwassen Inn. Tickets are $60 and can be purchased by calling Delta Gymnastics Society at 604943-0460. The evening’s festivities will also include a Rio Olympics panel featuring Delta’s four Olympians. Here are this year’s Sports Champions: Youth Athlete: Olivia Sheppard (soccer) Setting her sights high as a six-year-old, Sheppard dreamed of playing soccer at an NCAA Div. 1 school and for Canada. Sheppard was selected to Provincial Select squads for four years in a row. At the 2012 Canadian National Soccer Championships, the Tsawwassen resident earned the “Golden Boot” as top scorer. She was invited in 2015 as one of the inaugural members of the National EXCEL (REX) program designed to groom players for the Canadian Women’s National team. This past year, Sheppard’s hard work in both school and soccer paid off as she accepted an offer to play for Princeton University where she has established herself as a starter in her first year. Athlete: Brendan Hodge (rowing) Motivated by Silken Laumann to take up rowing, he attended Harvard University. After the 2005 U-23 World Championships where his crew finished seventh in the lightweight men’s fours (LM4), he “retired” from rowing to complete his law degree at UBC. After watching the 2012 London Olympics, the Tsawwassen

Soccer standout Olivia Sheppard is one of the 2016 Sports Champions who will be recognized this month at a gala banquet in Tsawwassen. resident knew he wanted to give rowing one more shot. His crews competed in LM4 in World Cup races and World Championships and won gold at the 2015 Pan American Games. Qualifying for Rio 2016, Hodge and his LM4 crew finished 13th. After two “careers” with an eightyear break in between, Hodge has retired from competitive rowing (again). Athlete: Maxwell Lattimer (rowing) A Ladner resident, Lattimer began rowing at Vancouver College where he was selected to Team BC in 2006. He rowed for the University of British Columbia and was named the Canadian University Rowing Association’s Male Athlete of the Year in 2013. That same year, Lattimer won three gold medals for B.C. at the Canada Summer Games. In 2014, he joined the senior national team where, a year later, his crew won gold at the Pan Am Games in LM4. At the 2015 World Championships his crew secured an Olympic berth for Rio 2016 where they would go onto finish 13th. Athlete: Pricilla

Westlake (bowls) A graduate of South Delta Secondary, Westlake is a champion. She got her start in lawn bowling in 2009 through an introduction from her grandmother. Over the last seven years, she has never looked back. She has been a BC Junior champion (2013, ‘14), Canadian Junior champion (2012, ’13, ‘14), Canadian U25 singles champion (2014, ’15) and Canadian indoor singles champion (2015). In 2016, Westlake won bronze at the World Indoor Cup and was selected to represent Canada this November at the World Bowls Championships in New Zealand. Master Athlete: Matt Yole (bowls) A seasoned athlete in lawn bowling at 87 years young, Yole had an outstanding 2015. A member of the Ladner Lawn Bowling Club for more than 26 years, Yole took up the sport upon his retirement. Currently past-president of the club, he has served his sport faithfully. In 2009, Yole’s vision reached a point where he could only see

one-third of the green. Rather than quit, he discovered blind lawn bowling and he hasn’t looked back. Last year, he won the gold medal at the National Blind Championships. Volunteer: Chris Roper (softball) Roper has been a dedicated volunteer in North Delta Softball for more than 20 years. Roper began coaching in house league, continuing on to coach the ND Lightning “Rep B” team for more than 12 years and in 2013 adding the “Rep A” Delta Heat team which he continues to coach today. His Lightning teams won two provincial gold medals and three provincial bronze medals during his tenure. He served as president of ND Softball for more than 16 years and in 2013 he added the role of president of the Delta Heat “Rep A” fastpitch association to his responsibilities. Team: Midget A1 Delta Islanders (lacrosse) Delta Islanders players and coaches have been successful for many years but on different teams. Coached by Steven and Darron Alexander, Tanner Taylor and Chris McCluskie, they won the silver medal at the U-15 field lacrosse Provincials in February. In July, the team won the Provincial A1 Midget Box Lacrosse championship. This team also serves the community by raising money and volunteering for the Delta Islanders cancer fundraiser and refereeing with the club. Coach: Cory Philpot (football) A well-known figure in the football community having played and won the 1994 Grey Cup as a member of the B.C. Lions, Philpot has built a legacy through his postCFL contributions to the community. Through his organization All Star Youth Sport, he works to provide opportunities for athletes, regardless of their economic ability, to participate in sports. Inspired by his mother Lily, Philpot has given countless hours to North Delta Community Football, as chair of Football Canada’s noncontact committee and with football operations in B.C. He led his U-16 B.C. All-Star Youth Flag Football team to a 2016 national championship. Coach: Brent Calvert (football) For over nine years Calvert has been a fixture with South Delta Rams community football as a coach. He has given countless hours of volunteer time to coaching, leadership, training and administering football programs. His teams have achieved success under his guidance, having gone undefeated in the Junior Bantam and Bantam divisions.

34-28 over Carson Graham; Notre Dame next IAN JACQUES

C o n t r i b u t i n g Wr i t e r

South Delta Sun Devils moved to 2-0 in conference play following a thrilling 34-28 overtime win over host Carson Graham Eagles last Friday night. In overtime, Sun Devils’ quarterback Michael Calvert hit Billy Matwichyna for a 20-yard score, but the Eagles blocked the convert, putting South Delta only up six. On the ensuing drive, the Eagles marched all the way down to the South Delta three-yard line where the Sun Devils defence held on fourth down to pull out the victory. “We didn’t play to our potential and let them back in the game too many times,” said South Delta head coach Ray Moon. South Delta opened

the third quarter with a 90-yard kick-off return by Matt Porteous to go up 28-14, but Carson Graham scored a pair of touchdowns in the fourth to tie the game. South Delta had big scoring plays all night long. Matwichyna opened the scoring thanks to a 65-yard strike from quarterback Ben McDonald and later scored following a 44-yard pass from Calvert. Porteous also scored on an 80-yard sweep. Calvert finished with 113 yards and two touchdowns while McDonald threw for 87 yards and one touchdown. Stef Goulas led the defence with 14 tackles and three sacks. South Delta plays host to Notre Dame tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Moon said his squad will have to be much sharper on Saturday if

they hope to remain undefeated. “It’s going to be a big game. Notre Dame just upset New West and they will be coming out hungry for another win,” said Moon. “On the defensive side of the ball we have to be able to control our gaps and when we try to get pressure on the quarterback, we have to make sure we get through instead of being tied up on the line. “We were able to sack the quarterback five times against Carson, but we need to get more pressure and we have to stop the run. They were able to get runs when they shouldn’t have and we have to tighten up on our pass defence as well.” With six guys injured, including four starters, Moon said other guys need to step up. “It’s the old story — next man up,” he said.
