The Delta Islanders will be heading to the 2016 Minto Cup with a huge wave of momentum.

They are B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League champions for the first time in their 15-year history after a thrilling 11-10 double overtime win over the Coquitlam Adanacs on Tuesday night.

The Adanacs entered the bestof-three final as heavy favourites, having won seven consecutive league titles and rolling to a perfect 25-0-0 record. The Islanders

served notice with a 9-6 game one victory, then dropped a 11-10 overtime heartbreaker at Sungod Arena.

They returned the favour 48 hours later in front of about 1,500 fans at the Coquitlam Sports Centre with a resilient performance.

Playoff MVP Jon Phillips scored with 1:03 remaining to send the game to overtime and Chase Fraser extended it to sudden-death with 1:07 left in the 10-minute extra period. Nick Jensen finally ended the drama when he finished off an odd man

The Islanders had reached the league finals on two previous occasions, including being swept in last year’s series. Now, they have taken lacrosse where it has never gone before in this community and it’s far from over.

The Minto Cup starts Aug. 20 at the Langley Events Centre.

Delta will be up against champions from the Ontario and Alberta leagues, along with the Adanacs.

It was one special night for team president Darcy Phillips,

who also holds down the same position with Delta’s minor box and field programs.

The Ladner resident is one of many who has put years of volunteer time into the franchise and the sport to get to this point.

He also watched his son deliver one huge performance.

“I’m speechless right now. It’s great to see it all come together.

Islander pride,” he smiled. “It shows what a lot of hard work and time in the box can do.”

“I have only wanted to win in Ladner. I have never put on a jersey other than Ladner,” he said. “I have had chances to go to other places in junior. I never wanted to leave here and I wanted to do this in this town.

“When you have done it once you can do it again. There will be a second time and there will be a third time. This is just a stepping stone (for this franchise).”

Delta MP and Canada’s Minister of Sport and Persons with Disabilities Carla Qualtrough has just returned from what she described a “memorable and thrilling” experience at the 2016 Summer Games in Rio. Qualtrough represented the federal government at the Games from Aug. 2 to 9 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

In the days leading up to the opening ceremonies on Aug. 5, Qualtrough met with numerous government officials including a session with all of the Commonwealth Sport Ministers.

“We spent time talking about international issues related to sport — things like anti-doping, integrity in sport, specific sports funding and women in sport,” she said. “The talks were very interesting and in my role as Canada’s Minister of Sport, very important to get our mes-

As for Rio itself, Qualtrough said despite the many concerns heading into the Games, at the end of the day, Rio was ready to host the world.

“It was down to the wire, but the athletes are saying the field of play is excellent, the officiating has been great, the facilities are great for athletes — all the kinks were worked out well before the opening ceremonies,” she said.

“To be honest if you are a spectator or a fan, you have to have a little more patience. Transportation has been an issue. It’s a big city and it takes a while to move around and the spectator lines have been long because of security, but I have always been focused on the athletes’ experience and what I have heard is that this has been great.”

Canada is fielding a team of 313 athletes in 37 sports, along with 205 coaches and support staff.

New environmental regs for container trucks SANDOR GYARMATI

The Port of Vancouver announced last week new environmental requirements have come into effect for container trucks serving the port.

Effective Aug. 1, all trucks registered in the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s Truck Licensing System are required to have either a diesel oxidation catalyst

or diesel particulate filter installed in order to gain access to port facilities, the port announced. There’s currently approximately 1,750 trucks performing around 30,000 container trips weekly along truck routes in the region, including South Delta, and most trucks in the system are already compliant.

The port authority notes that to fulfil the longstanding requirements and maintain port access,

trucking companies and independent owneroperators must provide verification of their truck engine age or proof that retrofits have been made to older trucks. Since the implementation, around 100 trucks last week alone that were in the Truck Licensing System are no longer permitted to access port facilities.

“The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority has a number of programs to reduce

emissions and improve regional air quality,” said Peter Xotta, vice-president of planning and operations. “Modernizing the port’s truck fleet is just one way we are contributing to efforts that address climate change and protect the health of local citizens.”

Meanwhile, a future truck staging area planned for South Delta is in the detailed design phase.

provincially owned-land at the junction of Highway 17 and Deltaport Way for the construction of a dual truck staging area and Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement inspection and enforcement facility. Approximately 10 acres (4.1 hectares) of currently agriculturally designated land will be paved with asphalt to accommodate 40 truck parking spaces, queuing for up to 140 trucks and a restroom.

Khal Drogo Khal Drogo came to the shelter in an odd predicament - he was a daddy!

Often times in the cat world male cats usually don’t seem to stick around to raise their young but for some reason this big orange tabby boy seemed to.

We don’t know for sure that he’s the father of Khaleesi’s seven kittens but there’s an awful lot of orange in there! Khal was a bit unsure of people when he first came into the shelter but it didn’t take long for him to realize we were okay. He’s still getting used to us but food and gentle pets seem to be the way to this rough boy’s heart. Khal is fully litter box trained and loves to eat! We aren’t sure yet how he’ll be with other cats as he had some wounds from cat fights but time will tell. We do however know that Khal does not appreciate the company of dogs. It will be safer that Khal be adopted to a home with adult children or adults only as he’s still nervous around people. Khal Drogo has been neutered and just recently had a dental.

Canada Post and the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) remain at the negotiating table, but progress has been discouraging according to Canada Post.

“We remain committed to our goal of reaching agreements that are fair to our employees. At the same time, the agreements must allow us to continue to provide affordable pricing and service to our customers and all Canadians,” said Serge Pitre, vice-president of sales in a news release.

Pitre said there has been some confusion amongst the public that there was a 30-day timeframe to negotiate a deal without a work stoppage.

“This confusion may stem from an earlier offer

Accordingly, Aug. 8 was not a date of significance,” he added. “Canada Post has expressed its strong desire to continue to negotiate without the threat of a lockout. Although CUPW has repeatedly said that they do not intend to strike, a threat of a 72-hour notice to strike is always a very real possibility.”

For its part, the CUPW has been ramping up public pressure on Canada Post and the federal government to negotiate a fair and just deal.

Last Saturday, more than 1,000 postal workers and allies gathered in Montreal and marched to Prime Minister Trudeau’s constituency office.

“It is time for Canada Post to negotiate seriously with us and address the issues that are key to achieving new collective agreements,” said a CUPW news release. “Now we wait and see how the government will react to our request for them to encourage Canada Post to come to the table ready to resolve the big issues.

We have shown both the

government and Canada Post that we are organized and committed to achieving negotiated collective agreements.

“There have been some discussions with Canada Post, but the end result is the same — little or no progress. There has definitely been no progress on the key issues. We are determined to get this process moving towards a settlement and when the movement happens, we will be ready.”

Contract discussions have been going on since late 2015.

The following are some of the calls the Delta Police responded to in the previous week:

TSAWWASSEN

Aug. 2, 6:58 p.m., Unit Block Graham Drive: Complainant reported the theft of a bicycle from the yard of his residence.

Police informed the complainant the bicycle was found abandoned in a field several days earlier and provided him with contact information to recover the bike.

Aug. 4, 9:15 a.m., 1700 Block 56th Street: Complainant reported that someone had broken into her vehicle by smashing the driver-side window. A sports bag and her wallet was stolen. Several of the complainant’s credit cards had already been used at multiple locations at the time of police report.

Aug. 5, 2:04 a.m., 700 Block Gilchrist Drive: A

citizen contacted police advising he had confronted a male stealing items from his vehicle.

The male fled the scene running in a westbound direction. Police attended and searched the area with the dog unit without success. The suspect entered the vehicle through an unlocked door and a camera tripod valued at $600 was stolen.

Aug. 5, 3:53 p.m., 5600 Block Goldenrod Crescent: Complainant reported she had parked her vehicle in her driveway and accidently left it unlocked.

When she returned to the vehicle she found it had been rummaged throughout, but nothing had been stolen.

Aug. 7, 1:44 p.m., 5200 Block Dennison Drive: Complainant reported the theft of goods from his open carport. Items stolen include four full jerry cans of gas and frozen fish and meat from his unlocked outdoor freezer.

Aug. 8, 2:57 a.m., 2800 Block Highway 17: Police stopped a vehicle, which was speeding northbound on the highway. While speaking with the driver, the officer detected an odour of alcohol coming from the driver’s breath.

Two breath samples provided by the driver read “Warn” and as a result he was given a seven-day roadside suspension. The vehicle was legally parked

off the highway and the driver was transported to his home by police.

LADNER

Aug. 2, 10:28 a.m., 2800 Block River Road West: Police received a report that a boat was upside down in the water with a fishing net strewn around it. Police were able to tow the boat back to shore and when the net was cut away from it, a six-foot sturgeon was found and released.

The boat was tied to the dock and the owner informed of the situation.

Aug. 2, 7:25 p.m., 4400 Block Clarence Taylor Crescent: Complainant said that she had paid $320 to a computer company called “Teamviewer” who contacted her through a pop-up ad on her laptop advising her of a virus they could fix remotely. The next day she received a call from the company threatening to “mess around with her computer” if she did not give them access to her bank accounts. She was instructed to put $2,500 into her chequing account and then send the money to Thailand. The complainant, realizing she may be the victim of computer fraud, went to her bank and cancelled her account and then to the police to file a report. The security division of the bank is currently monitoring the complainant’s account.

Delta seeks grant for renovation SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta is hoping to land another big federal grant to renovate the historic former city hall building in Ladner Village. The municipality is applying to the Enabling Accessibility Fund for funding of $50,000 to install an elevator.

Last summer, Delta received a $500,000 grant from the former Conservative government to renovate the building, which until recently had been the home of the Delta Museum for almost 50 years.

The $2.5 million rehabilitation project will see a major upgrade that includes the century-old facility having to also become more accessible for seniors and those with disabilities. A recent civic report notes the main floor of the building is elevated from the sur-

rounding sidewalks by approximately 10 feet and the current access is only via the long stairwell. The municipality is planning to add an exterior-accessible elevator that would provide direct access from the street to the main level of the building.

Parks and recreation director Ken Kuntz said most of the museum collection has been moved out to a temporary storage facility. Testing is already taking place of the walls and floor material for any hazardous material in advance of the renovation.

Once the renovation is complete, the building will serve as a community police station and its washrooms will be the first public washrooms in the village open seven days a week.

Meanwhile, the museum is set to re-open next year in the former courthouse in the Ladner civic precinct.

Natural, unstructured playground a first for Delta

Delta’s first natural, unstructured playground is coming to Annieville Lions Park in North Delta this fall.

A community costsharing project in partnership with the Corporation of Delta, the North Delta Lions Club, and made possible by an Otter Co-op community spaces grant, the initiative will see natural play elements introduced to the existing playground.

“Parks are so important to the development of our community,” says Mayor Lois Jackson. “There are many benefits to a natural playground and unstructured play for kids, and we are excited about working with community organizations like North Delta Lions and Otter Co-op to bring back play to Delta.”

Unstructured playgrounds are designed to reintroduce kids to healthy risk in natural play environments. Natural play features at the Annieville Park will include a log fort with a slide, log climber, leaping posts and a minizipline.

According to the Corporation of Delta, children who play regularly in natural environments show more advanced motor fitness, including coordination, balance and agility, and they are sick less often. Exposure to natural environments also improves children’s cognitive development by improving their awareness, reasoning and observational skills.

t can’t be as dramatic this time around, but that doesn’t mean we won’t feel it.

When the George Massey Tunnel opened back in 1959, it completely transformed Delta, ushering in an era of unprecedented growth thanks to vastly improved road access.

For the better part of two decades, this place absolutely boomed, to the point where a school, sometimes two, would open every September to serve new neighbourhoods that had popped up.

The advent of the Agricultural Land Reserve put an end to that sprawl by drawing a hard line between rural and urban, boundaries that still exist today, which means the 10-lane bridge to open in 2022 won’t have anywhere near the same impact as the crossing it’s scheduled to replace. However, that doesn’t mean getting across the south arm of the Fraser in a more timely fashion will be the only effect of the new span.

The bridge will apply pressure on farmland to be sure, but as long as the province holds firm on ALR boundaries and permitted uses, it’s hard to see significant change in that regard.

The real stress will be applied to the finite amount of residential land in Ladner and Tsawwassen, which will become more desirable once commuters don’t have to inch their way along the highway and through the antiquated tube.

When you couple ease of access with an aging, single-family-centric housing stock built during a time when lots were far larger, you’ve got the recipe for wholesale redevelopment.

We’re already seeing this happen in a piecemeal way, but the bridge could take that to a completely different level.

Fifty-year-old houses on 10,000-squarefoot lots don’t jibe with today’s market forces so you could soon see them disappear with increasing frequency.

How widespread this renewal becomes depends largely on the public’s appetite for change, which could well be determined by what kind of change is being proposed. We’ve made it abundantly clear we don’t want this place to turn into another Richmond, so I suspect density will become a buzzword in the years ahead.

Maintaining the character of these communities is paramount, but the pressure brought about by a new bridge will be unrelenting. Get ready because Delta’s next act begins in just six years.

Pay attention to politics here, not just in the U.S.

f the average Delta household is anything resembling ours, we spend more time immersed in American presidential politics than our own federal leadership debates.

Perhaps it’s just show time or represented better in prime time capturing our attention. I can’t think of two more controversial characters in a race to assume the leadership of the most powerful and influential country in the socalled civilized world.

Hate to say it, but I can’t wait for the leadership debates leading up to the November presidential election for our southern neighbours.

Seems there’s something flawed in candidate selection for these two to end up as their parties’ representatives.

Closer to home and perhaps not so captivating, but definitely worthy of our attention, Delta will undergo its own nomination races leading up to the May 2017 Provincial election.

The B.C. Liberal Party has authorized Delta South to hold a candidate selection meeting on Sept. 21. These meetings across all parties are far more significant than one might think in that a small turnout of members can nominate a candidate worthy or not, of the leadership and moral responsibilities given them.

In addition to these considerations, there is also the divisiveness between those of a particular political persuasion in backing an individual as the party’s nominee.

It certainly happened in the past, when there were two or more excellent candidates and likely will happen again as we move forward to the selection dates.

The B.C. Liberals have endorsed Ian Paton and Jim Cessford as candidates in Delta South.

Both camps are busy signing up members, which potentially benefits the parties’ fortunes for the provincial election. It’s almost impossible to avoid awkwardness between candidates who know each other well, and have supported each other when wearing different hats.

That sentiment carries over into the two “camps” whom are

well known to each other and have collectively worked together to address common political issues.

Cessford, a Sunshine Hills resident, is the recently retired Delta police chief of 20 years, and a well-known and knowledgeable South Delta personality. Cessford has a gregarious and outgoing personality, which belies his paramilitary policing career successfully completed. He has served at the country’s highest policing levels, so he has endured some of the inside “political” intrigues.

Paton Jr. is a born and raised Deltan from a family with highprofile community and provincial history. He has held a seat on Delta council since 2010, remains deeply involved in community affairs, is well-known in the agricultural community and is a high profile auctioneer lending support at many local fundraisers.

Both candidates are worthy to represent Delta South. These candidate’s profile work well at the municipal level. Not so at the provincial and federal level. The popularity of the party leadership vastly overrides the individual profile, look only at the last federal election locally for confirmation.

Paton and Cessford are venturing forth on an exciting opportunity with a formidable challenge ahead for one of them.

More of bog set to be destroyed

Editor: Re: MK Delta Lands Burns Bog development proposal, July 29.

There has been talk of sorts that the proposed deal with MK Delta Lands is the best trade-off or compromise that we could get.

The fact remains, more of Burns Bog is set to be destroyed.

Delta council has opened a path for bulldozers and dump trucks into the bog.

What has influenced council’s decision? Were deals/offers (land transfers and money), persuasions (more development attempts in the bog), and tax revenue involved?

Council surely didn’t want to destroy any part of this environmental jewel, but nature’s influence on council seems to take a back seat.

Why is it such a problem to protect what is left of Burns Bog, and give in to its destruction?

But this problem is not insurmountable. In fact, this same problem was overcome to a large degree back in 2004 with the creation of the Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area. Can this current problem be solved like it was back in 2004? Of course it can, but sadly,

so far, there is no political will.

If MK Delta Lands gets the final go ahead for their project, what is there to stop Suzicorp from developing their large parcel of bog next to MK’s (on the east side)?

Private interest has trumped the environment and the public good, but

my hope is that further destruction of the bog is not inevitable.

Delta council knows what they are getting out of this deal, but do they grasp the benefits of keeping Burns Bog, our “Lungs of the Lower Mainland,” protected from encroachment disease?

We all need to be more mindful on roads Editor: Patrick Burns makes a few salient points in his letter of Aug. 5: “As a pedestrian and often cyclist and motorist in the Tsawwassen area...” and I see a lot of the bad behaviours he mentioned, unfortunately, predominantly by pedestrians and cyclists.

He alleges that much of this behaviour is rooted in ignorance of the law, reality and basic physics and I tend to agree with him,

seeing cyclists riding sans helmets, riding on sidewalks, riding on the wrong side of the road and riding across crosswalks – all in ignorance of the law and reality.

I see pedestrians blithely walking into traffic, often with their face buried in their phone, earbuds jammed in place – deliberately ignoring the don’t walk signals and exhibiting the same behaviours, again, that Mr. Burns alleges is the sole

domain of the motorist.

Just “as a driver it is your responsibility to know the rules of the road and adhere to them at all times” applies to motorists it also applies to pedestrians and cyclists.

Yes, motorists are guilty of ignoring the laws, but so are pedestrians and cyclists.

So let’s not just go for the low hanging fruit – all of us needs to be more mindful out there, regardless of our ‘rights’.

Wisdom of making the right choice

Editor: Re: Massive brain drain awaits U.S. if Trump wins election (ML Burke column, Optimist Aug. 10).

That “massive brain-drain awaiting U.S.” could quite easily go either way come November with either a Republican or a Democrat win.

According to the latest New York Times/CBS poll, almost two-thirds of registered voters find Clinton and Trump equally unpopular.

While America’s voters are faced with an electoral “Hobson’s choice”

of an unpopular Hillary Clinton as the lesser of two evils, this election has very much become one history will remember as the competing “evils of two lesser!”

Perhaps the final word on the 2016 presidential election race to the bottom should go to an observation attributed to Woody Allen: “We stand today at a crossroads: One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other leads to total extinction. Let us hope we have the wisdom to make the right choice.”

B.C. desperate for doctors Editor: I read with incredulity the plight of Dr. Hejazi not being able to certify in B.C. (Optimist, Aug. 3).

When will our College of Physicians and Surgeons climb out of the dark ages and recognize other countries have first world medical schools? Our province is desperate for physicians. Let these new Canadians certify after taking an entrance exam and allow the folks of British

Columbia to benefit from Dr. Hejazi’s expertise.

We as a country need to shift our narrow paradigm and realize we in Canada do not have the best interests of our citizens at heart, including the Canadian Hejazi family, if we continue denying qualified medical professionals certification in Canada.

“The official celebration was last weekend because the month of August marked 10 years of us being in Ladner,” said owner Cathy Jesson. “The celebration went really well. Environmental Assessment of the Proposed George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project

Burns Bog Escape, a 5D gaming experience, runs rain or shine Friday, Aug. 19, Saturday, Aug. 20 and Sunday, Aug. 21. The first-time event takes place along the inner loop of the Delta Nature Reserve where participants will be faced with a series of puzzles to solve. The cost to take part is $20 for adults and $10 for kids (anybody under 18) during the daytime. There is also a subsidy families can apply for if planning on a daytime visit.

During the evening the cost is $30 per person.

The event is a fundraiser for the Burns Bog Conservation Society.

He says the club has been asked not to publicize the title of the film that will be shown as it is “too new of a release.” It’s being advertised as a “fantasy adventure movie.”

Starlight Spectacular is scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. with the movie starting at dusk.

and chairs and to walk or bike if possible. The event is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if necessary.

The Tsawwassen Town Centre Mall will host its Outdoor Movie Night & Block Party on Saturday, Aug. 27.

“It is a fantastic, free community event that brings a thousand guests together in the heart of Tsawwassen,” said mall promotions manager Shannon Taylor.

During the block party there will be numerous display and community booths with activities,

handouts, and information. There will be special performances by Studio Cloud 30 from about 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. and a Taekwondo demonstration from 7:45 to 8:15 p.m.

The TOOBs service club will be hosting a fundraising barbecue with smokies, hotdogs, popcorn, water and pop. Proceeds will benefit the club and the Ladner Girl Guides Association, which will be assisting with the event.

The computer animated Disney movie Inside Out will be shown at the mall’s movie night.

“If we cannot hold this event here at the mall in 2017, we will partner with and/or sponsor other community groups such as the Tsawwassen Rotary Club and look at other public spaces as a venue, to ensure that this fantastic community event continues,” she says.

The Western Dachshund Club’s 26th annual Wiener Walk & Picnic is set for Sunday at Winskill Park in Tsawwassen.

Between 75 to 100 dogs dachshunds are expected to attend, notes club member Susan Lankau.

“Many people come year after year. It’s just a fun thing for them,” she

says.

Popular events set to take place include wiener on a stick, musical hulahoops, a costume contest, best trick and wiener dunking (where dogs go after a piece of wiener in a bowl of water).

There will be samples from dog-related businesses as well.

For humans there will be a dachshund information table, an auction, a 50/50 draw and hotdogs

and pop.

The entry fee is $10 for your first dog and $5 for each additional dachshund. All dogs must be on a leash at all times.

Organizers ask that dogs be older than five months.

The event runs from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is set for 10:30 a.m.

Visiting Hawaii’s legendary volcanoes

Instead of fleeing eruptions, people pack picnics and go to watch, according to local guide RICK MILLIKAN

With fellow nature lovers, we head off to learn about Hawaii’s volcanoes and witness Kilauea’s fiery caldera at twilight.

Investigations begin in north Kona, where Ka’ahumanu highway slices through vast lava flows.

“Generally, people flee from volcanic eruptions.

Here, we pack picnics and go to watch. And that’s what we’re doing today!” grins our guide Steve. “Do you see Hualalai to the east? It erupted in 1801, producing these lava fields of jagged a’a and smooth pahoehoe. Hawaii’s oldest volcano, Kohala lies northward. We’re now travelling to the hotspot that created these and Hawaii’s three other shield-shaped volcanoes. Millions of years ago this hotspot began creating an archipelago of islands inching northward atop the Pacific Plate.”

Patches of golden Egyptian fountain grass dot this black terrain. In

Wailea, highland grasses flourish, creating green pastures. Saddle Road takes us up through a desolate valley between two huge dormant volcanoes. Steely observatories sparkle atop snowcapped Mauna Kea. Mauna Loa, we discover, represents the earth’s greatest volcanic mass.

On the windward side, abundant rainfall and rich volcanic soil nurture varieties of roadside ferns, cane orchids and bushy ohi’as, polymorphous plants shape-shifting to fit varied environments.

Handing out flashlights at Hilo’s Kaumana Caves Park, Steve smiles, “You’ll soon see that part of Hawaii’s charm lies underground!”

A steep stairway leads down to a fern-bordered cave entrance. Scaling rock piles and ducking under crevices, we step gingerly on a rippled old lava flow between smooth black walls.

“Desperate islanders asked Princess Ruth for help.

Arriving from Honolulu, she sat near the approaching lava, praying for fire goddess Pele to spare Hilo.

Atop Kilauea, we discover the UNESCO declared Volcanoes National Park a natural heritage site partly due to its being a religious setting. At the Jaggar Museum, we focus terrace telescopes on its steamy caldera.

Exhibits display Pele’s hair, long golden strands of volcanic fiberglass and Pele’s tears, droplets of volcanic glass. A posted legend describes how demigod Kamapua’a turned himself into ama’u ferns and surrounded Pele’s home to be close to her. The crater’s descriptive name: Halema’uma’u means house (hale) of the fern (ama’u).

Pictures and maps identify Kilauea’s eruptions, continuous since 1983. One photo shows the new rift across Crater Rim Drive,

so large it could swallow a bus!

Driving onward, we view steam rising from vents, giant ferns thriving in its rainforest and several small craters. Minutes later, there’s a short hike to a volcanic rift. I ask about the green ferns dotting the black landscape.

“That one’s the legendary ama’u. Its red frond is the scar where Pele burned Kamapua’a,” said Steve. “Those others are Kupukupu. Kupu means wise, so Kupukupu, are doubly wise in finding sheltered niches.”

Noting another form of Ohi’a, prompts another legend.

“Pele fancied a handsome Hawaiian called Ohi’a. He turned her down. So she changed him into a tree. Later showing godly compassion toward his truelove Lehua, Pele transformed her into a beautiful red blossom and attached her to Mr. Ohi’a to be forever together.”

On the road again, Steve tells another legend.

“Kama-pua’a and Pele were initially attracted to one another, yet they squabbled. Pele tried to burn her demigod admirer, so Kama-pua’a turned himself into a pig and trotted away. Pele then became lava, attacking Kama-pua’a. He turned into ama’u ferns, hiding in crevasses. Ultimately, he morphed into a pigfish, diving into the Pacific and swimming away.

Descending switchbacks along the new Chain of Craters Road, Pele’s lava can be seen, zigzagging down a steep escarpment, leaving untouched islands of emerald ama’us.”

Back at the Jaggar, we gaze upon Hale’mau’mau, now spectacularly illuminated by glowing red magma. In the warm evening air, constant crackcrack-crackling can be heard. Is Pele at her stove stirring poi?

Studio West presents Lion King musical

Studio West Dance presents its fourth summer musical, Disney’s The Lion King this weekend.

Performances are Saturday at 3 and 6 p.m. and Sunday at 1 and 3 p.m. at Hawthorne Elementary School’s gymnasium, which has been masterfully converted into a theatre space, complete with stage, lighting and sound.

It’s a one-act kids’ show that will run approximately 30 minutes.

“We are over-the-moon excited to produce this show,” explained choreographer and Studio West director, Jyla Davis. “It is even more significant this year as we prepare to compete in Showstoppers West Coast Finals in Disneyland in July 2017.”

The production will pack a punch with all of your favourite characters, played by 25 of Delta’s most talented young triple threat performers.

Tracy Neff. “I remember watching it over and over again the summer it came out. My family had to listen to me belt out, ‘Hakuna Matata’ a hundred times a day.”

Davis and Neff became fast friends when they performed together at Theatre Under the Stars 16 years ago. Soon after that, Davis launched into a professional dance career and Neff went to study musical theatre at the Boston Conservatory.

“We both arrived back in Delta around the same

time and we both knew that we wanted to work with youth in Delta to create opportunities that we were given or that we wish we had,” said Davis.

Davis and Neff, along with an efficient team of helpers, put the show together in one week.

“It is unbelievably fastpaced, but we all have a blast and laugh a lot,” said Neff.

The Sidekick Players will be auditioning for the second production of its 20th season, Art by Yasmina Reza (translation

by Christopher Hampton) and directed by Jacqollyne Keath.

Audition dates are Wednesday, Aug. 24 and Sunday, Aug. 28 from 7 to 9 p.m. with call backs (if needed) Wednesday, Aug. 31 at the Sidekick Rehearsal Hall (downstairs), Tsawwassen Arts Centre, 1172-56th St., Tsawwassen.

Cast requirements include: three males who can play 40s to late 50s, Serge (40-59) art lover and dermatologist, Marc (40-59) engineer and Ivan (40-55) stationary shop employee.

Production dates are Jan. 12 to 28, 2017, with possible extra matinee Jan. 2 at The Tsawwassen Arts Centre.

Art opened in London’s West End on Oct. 15, 1996. The production stared Albert Finney, Tom Courtenay and Ken Stott,

produced by David Pugh and Sean Connery. It ran for eight years.

The comedy, which raises questions about art and friendship, concerns three long-time friends, Serge, Marc, and Yvan.

Art then played on Broadway in New York from Feb. 12, 1998 to Aug. 8, 1999.

The March 1, 1998 opening-night cast featured Alan Alda (Marc), Victor Garber (Serge), and Alfred Molina (Yvan), who was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play for his performance. Art won the Tony for Best Play and went onto a 600-performance run. Replacement actors included Judd Hirsch, Joe Morton, George Wendt, Buck Henry, George Segal and Wayne Knight.

The comedy, which raises questions about art and friendship, concerns three long-time friends, Serge, Marc, and Yvan.

Serge, indulging his penchant for modern art, buys a large, expensive, completely white painting. Marc is horrified, and their relationship suffers considerable strain as a result of their differing opinions about what constitutes “art.” Yvan, caught in the middle of the conflict, tries to please and mollify both of them.

For the past 12 weeks, a BCIT intern has been monitoring trees on the margins of farm fields for songbird abundance and diversity. In addition, a UBC Masters student is monitoring these same habitats to determine their benefits to wild bees.

In the fall of 2016, two BCIT Fish, Wildlife and Recreation student teams will be evaluating the ability of Grassland Set-aside fields to conserve local raptors and small mammal populations. A separate BCIT team will be conducting surveys to provide farmers and conservation partners with information regarding the extent to which waterfowl feed on different crop residues.

The information gathered through all of these scientific evaluations may improve the ability of local farms to sustain their soil for long-term crop production, while maintaining the ability of the Fraser River delta landscape to conserve a multitude of wildlife species.

So, the next time you drive by a local farm field and see the crop sign, remember that because of the efforts of local farmers, Delta’s fields are alive with scientific investigation!

Gov’t silent on threat to Delta farmland

Port constantly warns Metro Vancouver it will require 2,300 acres of additional industrial land VICKI HUNTINGTON

It’s an open secret that, as a federal body, the Port of Vancouver doesn’t have to play by provincial rules. They can, for example, take land they own out of the Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) and completely side-step the usual application to the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC).

Given the port constantly warns Metro Vancouver that servicing its needs will require 2,300 acres of additional industrial land, and given it currently owns 240 acres of land zoned for farming in Richmond, the implications of their power is significant.

Even though the port has categorically stated that it does not have to go to the ALC – port officials have said on the record that an application to the ALC is “not going to happen” – the Minister of

Agriculture continues to say they expect the port to go through the ALC process. And it doesn’t matter how you ask the question, or what proof you provide, the province will not admit it can’t control the process.

My only conclusion is that the province is quite happy to let the port do what it wants when it comes to development on agricultural land. In fact, when the premier answered my question about using provincial influence to protect the Richmond land, she accused me of not supporting job creation.

Why is this issue so important to Delta?

Well, the Emerson Group has recently renewed options to purchase about 250 acres of farmland, near the Tsawwassen First Nation, for $50.2 million. I saw the early plans for a huge intermodal yard (tracks, distribution centres, roads, cranes) to service the port.

And I was told, initially, the port was involved in the plan. If that is the case; or if Emerson sells the land to the port; or if the port purchases the land and sells it (changes to the Canada Marine Act allow the Port to sell land as federal land), then that land can be developed without referral to the ALC. So along comes the Terminal 2 Environmental Assessment (EA), which is currently underway.

And believe it or not, the EA doesn’t include the potential impact of the T2 expansion on agricultural land, despite the port’s stated plan to acquire more industrial land.

B.C. says its interests in the EA are restricted to noise, light, traffic and air quality.

They could have asked for more information about the adjacent, provincially designated Roberts Bank Wildlife Management Area, but they were silent. They

designated ALR, but they didn’t.

The province is doing nothing to protect the agricultural land of the Fraser Estuary.

Tsawwassen First Nation and KPU team up for farm school

Since last year, students, staff, teachers and community members have been busy building a new farm from the ground up.

The Tsawwassen First Nation (TFN) Farm School has been growing organic vegetables and training new farmers in sustainable agriculture since last summer.

The development of both the farm and the school emerged from a partnership between TFN and the Institute of Sustainable Food Systems at Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Since last year, students, staff, teachers and community members have been busy building a new farm from the ground up. Participating students are enrolled in the program from March to November and get to be involved in every stage of

the growing season from planning, to seeding, preserving, harvesting and seed saving.

The farm sits on 20 acres of TFN land near 52nd Street and 28th Avenue. It has four acres of market garden, two acres of mixed fruit orchards, greenhouses, pigs and laying hens. A big portion of the farm will be used as incubator plots for students who have completed the program in following years. Students are eligible to steward a quarter to a half acre piece of land for up to three years and try their hands at starting their own micro farm business.

The TFN Farm School

is committed to ecological and restorative farming methods and will be fully certified organic by the end of the summer. Some of the projects undertaken this year including the planting of a habitat enhancing hedgerow of mostly native plants and the installation of solar panels to serve all of the electricity needs of the farm.

Thanks once again for the opportunity to provide this annual message to Delta Optimist readers as we look back at another rewarding year in B.C. agriculture.

You can feel it as soon as you drive off the ferry.

Delta is a special place.

It starts with the unique ‘Welcome to Delta’ signs and the use of the bulrush plant in the logo, a nod to Delta’s beautiful natural environment.

Delta’s special quality is also reflected by your dedicated and hard-working agriculture community.

From the field vegetables, to the greenhouses, to the blueberry fields – Delta has it all.

During the past year, the B.C. government announced a new strategic growth plan that clearly identifies the next steps to build on the record $12.3 billion in agrifood and seafood revenues in 2014. We want to have a $15 billion dollar year industry in B.C.

by 2020. We are going to do this by achieving economic growth, adapting to climate change, and maintaining food supply security. We need young farmers, young business people and young leaders and this will drive the future of our sector in Delta and beyond and we will be there to support them.

The B.C. government has invested $8 million in our Buy Local program since 2012 to help B.C. companies find new customers in British Columbia. In the past year, two Delta family businesses, Bremner Foods and Brockmann’s Chocolate have received Buy Local funds to help grow their businesses.

We have also been building the market for B.C. agrifoods abroad, reaching a record $3 billion in exports in 2014 to more than 150 countries.

As we continue to support B.C. agriculture and seafood companies, in return they have always been looking at ways to give back to their com-

munities. That’s why we announced the new 2016 Farmers’ Food Donation Tax Credit in February.

The credit is available to individuals and corporations that carry on the business of farming and donate a qualifying agricultural product to a registered charity. This may include meat products, eggs or dairy products, fish, seafood and fruits and vegetables. I know food banks throughout the province are looking forward to these donations.

There are about 55,000 people working in our British Columbia agrifood and seafood sectors. As you make your way along Highway 17, I ask that you think about the people you see working in the fields and greenhouse operations.

They deserve our support. Experience your local farmers market, roadside stand, or agrifood and seafood business. You will meet some incredible people, supporting their family, their local community, and British Columbia.

Taking Root: District & KPU mark inaugural agricultural cohort This fall, staff and students from Delta School District and Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) will celebrate the inaugural semester of Farm Roots Mini School.

This unique program, co-run between Delta School District and KPU, allows students to use the project of building a farm as a practical learning platform to explore their interests in an outdoor, hands-on, and ‘real-life’ setting.

While earning dual credits towards high school graduation and KPU, students will design, plan and build a farm.

Located on eight acres of land at the old Boundary Beach Elementary School site, the grade 10-12 students will attend Farm Roots every second day, and their regular school the other days.

To commemorate this unique first cohort, the District and KPU will be hosting a program launch, inviting local stakeholders, community groups, indigenous representatives and neighbours to the farm for an open house and celebration later in September.

“We are so excited to be working with KPU and to be able to offer this immensely valuable learning opportunity to our students,” said Doug Sheppard, superintendent Delta School District.

“Farm Roots is a unique program that will not only grow as an educational offering, but also as a part of the Delta community.”

When asked what types of crops the farm will produce, Brooke Moore, district principal of inquiry and innovation says Farm Roots teachers are open for almost anything.

“What makes Farm Roots Mini School so amazing is that the practical workings of the farm will be initiated by the students,” said Moore. “As a part of their learning they will need to explore what will work and what won’t work, and what resources and logistics will certain crops need, and how to plan for future seasons.

The business component will be significant as well — questions like marketing, and investigating land use are all a part of that process.”

At the farm, students

will explore and learn about food systems, resource management, business administration, science, and social studies with a focus on innovative sustainability and agricultural sciences.

Moore added that teachers from Delta and Kwantlen as well as the local farming community will carefully guide students through their work.

“The first year will be very exciting. There will be a lot of learning around what works as well as what doesn’t. As educators it’s our job to help facilitate that learning,” said Moore.

Farm Roots will provide students with unique skills applicable to varied and burgeoning career paths, as well as the competencies in demand from today’s employers: leadership, collaboration, creativity, problem-solving, and communication. Farm Roots’ goal is to also delve into issues of ethical and environmentally sustainable food security.

During the past 20 years, IAF has delivered government funding to more than 1,700 projects across B.C. To mark the anniversary, the foundation commissioned an economic assessment to quantify the total impact of government funding delivered to these projects, and the totals speak to the value of the investments.

The $192 million invested in B.C. agriculture and agrifood through the IAF has had an impact of $1.85 per dollar, including 2,834 person-years of employment, and $10 million in tax revenue, for a total economic impact of $355 million.

“This report shows how collaboration between senior levels of government and the agriculture industry can make a significant difference to agriculture and agrifood in B.C.,” said Ken Bates, chair of the IAF. In the tree fruit, grape

and wine sectors, IAF has played a significant role, from directly delivering funding to projects, to managing funds for important sector initiatives including the early days of Orchard Replant and the Sterile Insect Release program. In the past five years alone, IAF has delivered more than $870,000 to 73 innovation and export projects through Growing Forward 2, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative.

The B.C. Wine Institute has received $137,035 through the Buy Local program and the B.C. Agrifoods Export Program under Growing Forward 2.

The lifelong friends, who grew up in Delta Lacrosse together, have helped their hometown team make history.

The Delta Islanders captured their first-ever B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League championship with a thrilling 11-10 double overtime win over the seven-time defending champion Coquitlam Adanacs on Tuesday night.

Phillips and Messenger were aged up four years ago to get an early jump on their junior careers.

The momentum has slowly been building with tons of hard work along the way.

“This is a five-year plan coming together. This isn’t an accident,” beamed Messenger. “We have been practising our tails off to get here. Running stairs, around (Delta) hospital, around the town.

“We had all the pieces,” added Phillips who led the playoffs in scoring and earned MVP honours.

“Everything has worked out this year and it’s just a dream come true to get where we are.”

Lacrosse fans might feel a little short changed the league finals were just a best-of-three affair since both teams are already headed to next week’s Minto Cup in Langley.

Games two and three were as good as junior “A” lacrosse gets — both with plenty of momentum shifts and needing overtime to determine the outcome.

Delta forced overtime in game two with a goal in the dying seconds and were 1:46 away from sweeping the series when the Adanacs struck twice to pull out an 11-10 win at Sungod Arena on Sunday.

An estimated 1,500 fans were treated to another barn-burner 48 hours later at the Coquitlam Sports Centre.

The Adanacs’ dynasty looked poised to continue when John Hofseth gave the hosts a 9-7 lead with 5:11 remaining. However, Aidan Milburn cut the lead to one just 23 seconds later. Phillips then notched his hat trick goal with

63 seconds left on a terrific long range bounce shot.

After nearly seven minutes of scoreless play in overtime, Hofseth put Coquitlam back out in front.

Again, Delta answered — this time Chase Fraser with 1:07 remaining.

The teams then headed to sudden death overtime and Nick Jensen capped a 3-on-2 break with his second of the game, just 39 seconds in.

Delta’s transition game played a huge part in the win with a pair of goals coming from defenders Adam Jay and Jensen. Jay also showed great patience to set up Fraser’s tying goal.

“These guys have heart and determination,” said Islanders head coach Greg Rennie.

“Everyone counted us out. No one wanted to believe in us at the

beginning of the year and said we were pretenders. Coquitlam is amazing and you can’t take anything away from that team. They are going to be dangerous and they are going to want to get us in the Minto Cup.” Rennie did some of his best work as assistant general manager at the league trading deadline — acquiring Nate Wade, Ryan Lewis and Jay to shore up the back end.

He also went east for the very first time to grab a pair of Ontario standouts — goaltender Kevin Orleman and high-scoring righty Cam Milligan.

It also took the support of some veterans, who were now no longer in the line-up, not to disrupt team chemistry.

Orleman and Milligan not only brought talent, but a fearless atti-

tude when it came time to facing the powerhouse Adanacs.

“They are an incredible organization but I think folks out here maybe respect them a little too much. They put their gear on one piece at a time just like us,” said Orleman who made 52 saves in game three. “It feels incredible to get the win but Cam and I didn’t come all the way out here to win a B.C. championship. Minto Cup is the ultimate goal.”

“This is exactly the way we wanted it to work out,” added Milligan. We didn’t want to go through the backdoor (to Minto Cup). We wanted to go as B.C. champs.”

The Islanders will face Alberta champions Calgary Mountaineers on Aug. 20 (8 p.m.) to open up Minto Cup round-robin play.

Delta Sports Hall of Fame accepting nominations Past & present Olympians among honourees With a mission “to celebrate Delta sport achievement, recognize excellence and honour past, present and future sport role models,” the Delta Sports Hall of Fame has been highlighting athletic achievement in Delta since its inception in 2005.

With the 2016 Rio Games now underway, it is interesting to note that almost 20 athletes honoured by the DSHOF have represented Canada and Delta at past Olympics. This summer, two more Delta athletes, who are past honourees of the Hall of Fame, are taking part in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. Mark Pearson is representing Canada in field hockey for the second time.

Back in 2014, he was honoured in the Sports Champion in the Athlete of the Year category. The Tsawwassen native has been a standout with the men’s national team program for many years having recently recorded his 200th international cap. He scored in Canada’s opening game loss to Germany on Saturday.

Eighteen-year-old swimmer Markus Thormeyer made his Olympic debut, helping Canada’s 4x100 freestyle relay team reach Sunday’s final and place seventh.

The Tsawwassen resident was honoured this past year as a Sports Champion in the Youth Athlete of the Year cateogry.

Thormeyer will join the UBC Thunderbirds after Rio to continue his swimming career.

“I qualified on the fourth day and final day of Olympic team trials.

“After the first three days I hadn’t qualified so when I touched the wall and saw that I had made the team, words could not describe the feeling.,” said Thormeyer about qualifying for Rio, The DSHOF presents two awards in multiple categories.

Sports Champions recognized accomplishments made within the past year.

Categories include: Athlete, Youth Athlete, Masters Athlete, Coach, Team and Volunteer, all for this past year.

The second category are inductions into the Delta Sports Fame in six categories — Athletes, Builders, Coaches, Teams, Pioneers and Sponsors.

Nominations for both categories are now open for the 2016 edition until Aug. 22.
