Cuts to offset $3.38M shortfall Reductions to be felt throughout district as school trustees grapple with yet another deficit SANDOR GYARMATI

The Delta school board is looking at another round of cuts as it faces a $3.38 million operating deficit. The budget for 2016/17 made public today has a shortfall despite an increase in fund-

ing of $60 per pupil from the Ministry of Education. Unlike last year, when the board had a $2.06 million shortfall and made only a few cuts, the measures to balance the budget this time around will involve reductions on many fronts. “It’s difficult to look at a reduction anywhere that doesn’t

have some impact either directly or trickled down on schools,” secretary treasurer Joe Strain said while explaining the budget situation to the Optimist this week. Cuts include reducing secondary supervision assistants to just one per school and removing secondary library technicians,

which will leave just one position working out of the Delta Manor Education Centre. Other cuts include reducing school board office supplies and services, removing the secondary school equipment repair budget, which may leave schools to fund their own repairs, reducing the media library opera-

tion and reducing the district’s French coordinator hours. Additional reductions include potentially reducing six full-time special education assistants, unless enough extra funding comes through, and reducing the allocation of teaching staff by six positions. REVENUES: see page 3

Three years after launching the North Delta Seniors Bus program, a similar initiative is coming to South Delta. Delta council approved a one-year lease on a wheelchair accessible bus for the program Monday night. On the heels of the success of the North Delta program, there was always a commitment to expand it to South Delta, said Coun. Sylvia Bishop. “Accessible and affordable transportation is an ongoing issue for seniors,” states a staff report presented to civic politicians. “With an aging population in Delta, this had accelerated the demand for inexpensive transportation options for seniors.” Service will be provided to individuals that require transportation that is otherwise not readily available.
