Gov’t ‘hands-off’ on T2: MLA Huntington wants province to take a more active role in environmental review SANDOR GYARMATI

Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington is criticizing B.C.’s environment minister for a “hands-off approach” to the environmental assessment of Terminal 2, but Mary Polak insists that’s not the case.

Earlier this year, Port Metro Vancouver submitted a comprehensive environmental document to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency, which will trigger a lengthy review of the proposed three-berth container terminal at Roberts Bank.

The document summarizes the results of several dozen studies undertaken over four years for the proposed terminal.

Huntington said this week she “grilled” Polak for publicly declining to ask the port authority for additional information on matters of provincial jurisdiction. The object of the comment phase of the assessment process is to ensure the scope of information provided is as complete as possible for the review panel, she said.

“The minister said again today her ministry will step in to address gaps in the environmental assessment process for T2, but they have failed to fulfill that promise to date,” said the independent MLA. “7,663 pages were submitted in the port’s EIS (environmental impact statement), and despite the shortcomings of those

Instead, it was left to individuals, organizations and federal agencies like Health Canada to point out provincial issues missing from the report.”

In July, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency released a list of additional information the port was still required to include in its application. Many of those requirements are areas of provincial concern, including issues related to air quality, originally identified by Health Canada, Huntington said.

She added the province’s failure to notice the port had not considered standards set by its own

ministry raises serious concerns.

Polak told the Optimist Huntington doesn’t understand the process going on, saying the province participated in the screening of the environmental document with the feds.

“Insofar as her saying we have a hands-off approach, we’ve been working with CEEA from the beginning on this. The point is, early on, we identified which issues were under federal jurisdiction and the vast majority are. So, the approach we have taken is that we will observe their process and evaluate as they proceed.

If there are areas we don’t think they have covered sufficiently that are important to British Columbia’s interests, then we will

proceed to have those assessed,” she explained.

“So it’s far from a hand-off approach.

Our office is working very closely with the Canadian Environmental Assessment (Agency) office.”

Meanwhile, the clock is about to start ticking again on the T2 application. Ottawa asked the port authority for additional information before the review could proceed, effectively stopping the clock until the environmental document was deemed complete.

In an early October letter to the government, Cliff Stuart, the port’s vicepresident of infrastructure, advised they were gathering that information and expected everything to be

ready for submission by the end of the month.

Once all the additional information is in the hands of the CEAA, the review process, which includes public and stakeholder input, will begin once again.

The project is subject to an independent review panel under the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, but will also undergo an assessment under the British Columbia Environmental Assessment Act. It also requires other permits and authorizations.

The port has estimated construction of the project would commence sometime in 2018 and would take approximately five-and-a-half years to complete.

South Delta Crime Beat

The purpose of the Crime Beat is to educate and inform the public about some of the property crime trends occurring in South Delta and other files of interest. If you see anything occurring that you believe to be suspicious, call 911 for inprogress crimes and emergencies or 604-946-4411 for other assistance.

The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week:

Tsawwassen Oct. 19, 6:24 p.m., 1800-block of 56th Street: Complainant reported the theft of $700 US and $600 CDN from his wallet that he left in a locker at the gym. The complainant indicated he did not lock the locker as he was visiting from out of town. No other items taken from the wallet.

Oct. 22, 5:53 p.m., 1600block of Enderby Avenue: Complainant reported that sometime overnight someone entered her residence and ransacked the bedrooms and kitchen area.

Numerous items were stolen, including jewelry and cash. A neighbour indicated to police that a white 20-year-old male wearing a black jacket, jeans and baseball cap was observed exiting the driveway area.

Oct. 23, 8:49 p.m., 16th Avenue and Beach Grove Road: Complainant reported he had lost his black wallet containing cash and ID cards after exiting the bus.

Complainant to contact all

agencies and advise them of the loss of the missing items. Information regarding lost items entered in the police database.

Oct. 24, 2:24 p.m., 500-block of Boundary Bay Road: Complainant reported she had parked her vehicle at the beach and when she returned to the car she found the driver’s side rear window smashed and her purse stolen. The purse contained bank cards and ID cards. A search of the area by police did not locate a dumped purse or any other targeted vehicles.

Oct. 24, 9:05 p.m., 600block of Gilchrist Drive: A report was received that two youth were kicking in fence panels. Police attended the area but the youth were gone on arrival. Several fence panels were found kicked in with an estimated damage of $200.

Oct. 25, 10:51 p.m., 5900-block of 17A Avenue: Complainant reported her son was playing on the grass in the area and had left his golf clubs and cart unattended. When he returned the golf clubs and cart, valued at $100, were gone. The clubs are described as gold coloured in a green and black bag.

Oct. 26, 10 a.m., 1100block of 12th Avenue: An iPad Mini found in the area turned into the Tsawwassen Community Police Station. Owner can claim on identification at the office, 1108-56th St.

The purse contained cash, ID, credit and debits cards. Before they were cancelled, the credit cards had been used to make fraudulent transactions.

Oct. 22, 8:55 a.m., 4400-block of 63A Street: Complainant reported he had accidently left his vehicle unlocked and that sometime overnight it was entered and ransacked. A pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses were stolen.

Oct. 22, 11:18 a.m., 6100-block of Aurora Court: Complainant’s unlocked vehicle was entered sometime overnight and several items were stolen, including prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses and a Leatherman multi tool.

Vehicle not available for forensic exam as it had been taken to work.

Oct. 24, 3 p.m., Deas Island Regional Park: Complainant reported that the side window of her parked vehicle had been smashed and her purse stolen without opening the door. The credit cards were cancelled and the complainant to provide police with a property list and numbers.

Ilona said in Germany, where the tradition is still widely practiced today, you can get the crown from a florist, however, she had to make her own with instructions she found online. She said the crown

also includes colourful streamers and sometimes trinkets to signify the members of the family.

With construction progressing, she said they had about a week’s notice of when the last rafter would be complete and the family went door-to-door to invite neighbours to the richtefest, which also typically includes a celebratory feast.

“It was really lovely,”

Ilona said of the richtefest, adding that about 60 to 70 neighbours attended the festivities.

During the ceremony, the Yues’ grandsons delivered the crown to the builder, who placed it on the roof. As per tradition, the head of the household would then hammer in the final nail of the frame.

In this case Richard and Mark hammered in the final two nails.

Terry came to us as a trapped feral that has since turned quite friendly. Terry lived outdoors and was being fed by his finder who was then able to trap him when Terry bit his own tongue and needed medical assistance. He was going to be returned to the finder’s home after he got all fixed up but he decided that perhaps he’d rather be a friendly inside cat instead! Terry doesn’t seem to mind other cats in the shelter and can be seen hanging out with other cats in our communal room. We feel Terry would do best in a home with no dog but may do well with older children who understand cat body language. A centuries-old German tradition made an appearance in Tsawwassen earlier this month.

About a year ago, Richard and Ilona Yue decided they needed more space. The couple, along with their son Mark Roesler and his family, decided to demolish the Yues’ home on Jackson Way and build a larger home that could accommodate Roesler, his wife Charmaine and their two sons, Logan, 10, and Luca, 4, with the Yues living in an “in-laws” suite in the lower portion of the home.

After months of planning, a couple months ago the home was demolished and construction began on the new house.

As construction on the frame progressed, Ilona Yue knew she wanted to incorporate a little of her German heritage into the project — specifically a richtefest, a traditional German ceremony to bless a new home, that dates back to the 14th century.

The ceremony includes several elements, including placing a tree or crown of branches on the roof

A local student is hoping to get the word out about the Teal Pumpkin Project.

Madilynn Ukranitz, a Grade 8 student at Southpointe Academy who lives in Ladner, saw a teal pumpkin while out trickor-treating last Halloween.

She found out about the Food Allergy Research & Education’s Teal Pumpkin

Project that aims to “raise awareness of food allergies and promotes inclusion of all trick-or-treaters throughout the Halloween season.”

The American organization started the initiative last year.

Ukranitz, who has food allergies, explained that having a teal pumpkin on display means the home has allergy safe treats to hand out.

“So that kids with allergies, like myself, can have a safer Halloween,” she said.

That could be non-food items like pencils, notebooks or markers, or nonallergen candy.

She said her family will have a teal pumpkin this year.

he 9,000-vote margin on election night certainly hinted at it, so the subsequent poll-by-poll numbers merely provided confirmation that all parts of Delta were painted red in last week’s federal election.

When the electoral map was redrawn, combining a staunchly conservative South Delta with a middleof-the-road North Delta, it prompted speculation as to what that would mean come election time. Would North Delta, which often holds the hammer in municipal elections, tip the scales federally as well to potentially put an end to more than four decades of right of centre representation in these parts?

That didn’t turn out to be the case as voters in all three communities agreed on the need for change.

With North Delta awash in red, Tsawwassen and Ladner, which hadn’t been represented by a Liberal since Tom Goode in the late 1960s, followed suit, although it should be noted that Carla Qualtrough’s margin over Conservative incumbent Kerry-Lynne Findlay, while significant, wasn’t as large in South Delta. In a closer race, North Delta could well have been the deciding factor, but it wasn’t this time around.

How this came to be is a complex equation but from where I’m sitting there appears to be a trio of major factors that played out to varying degrees, including a decline in popular vote for the Conservatives across the country.

That wasn’t enough to knock off Alice Wong in Richmond or prevent Dianne Watts from claiming victory in South Surrey-White Rock, so there was something beyond just sagging Conservative support that changed fortunes in the right wing stronghold of Delta.

Part of that had to be voter dissatisfaction on a number of local issues, including radio towers, community mailboxes and port expansion, while strategic voting, particularly by New Democrats, sealed the deal. Even though the NDP fielded a credible candidate in Jeremy Leveque, who not only was conversant with the issues but was passionate about them, support for the party plummeted as voters clearly looked for the candidate most likely to defeat the Conservatives.

With leakage from the right and converts from the left, Qualtrough was ideally positioned and it showed in a big way last Monday.

Difficult to know how premier made her decision on bridge

L

ast week B.C.’s privacy commissioner issued a stinging report on how a provincial government employee had destroyed emails relating to an inquiry about the Highway of Tears. A government employee counselled another to erase emails related to the inquiry.

When that employee resisted, the other employee took over the computer and deleted the emails.

He then swore under oath he had not done this, but finally confessed.

In response, the minister of technology, innovation and citizens’ services claimed it was an “exception.” Further checking by the privacy commissioner, however, showed that up to 40 per cent of all emails handled in the premier’s office were being systematically destroyed. Included was the commissioner’s statement that “the [premier’s] deputy chief of staff has not personally retained a single email she has ever sent from her government email address.”

So where are the records? How does this track with the premier’s election promise to have the most open, transparent government in the country?

Closer to home, in March of 2013 the Ministry of Transportation published a con-

sultation guide that showed five scenarios to replace the George Massey Tunnel. This was to help in the discussions.

In September of that year, the premier announced at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention (all mayors and councillors in B.C.) that the tunnel was to be replaced by a single eight- to 10-lane bridge at the same location.

In April 2014, I submitted a freedom of information request for “materials such as documents, data, analysis prepared for the premier to allow her to determine and to announce that the Massey Tunnel would be replaced by a bridge over the Fraser River.” On June 4, I received a letter stating: “Although a thorough search was conducted, no records were located in response to your request.”

So what happened? How did the premier become involved, how did she become aware enough of the discussions, the pro and con? Did the cabinet participate in the multi-billion dollar decision so she could make this pronouncement?

Her public comment last week was: “Decisions I make are mostly made in cabinet meeting and all that’s evident to the public because all of that is recorded… and released.” But no records could be found, so did she simply make the decision on her own in the middle of a shower?

I later asked the question of the senior public servants in charge of the George Massey Tunnel Replacement Project office in Richmond. Their response was silence. I asked them for the financial analysis of comparing the five choices. They responded: “It was high level.” I then asked: “Where were the notes?” They said none were taken.

So just how open and disciplined is the provincial government? Is this how you want a decision costing billions of dollars to be made? Who is hiding what?

Remember that pets are not fond of Halloween

Editor: Jack-o’-lanterns, trickor-treaters, haunted houses and costume parties.

Halloween is full of fun things for you and your family to enjoy, but it’s one of those holidays that is enjoyed more by people than by pets. Keep the following precautions in mind when preparing for the frightfully fun festivities and help ensure that everyone in your family — including your pet — has a safe Halloween.

Keep your pet in a quiet place; away from trick-or-treaters and other Halloween activities. You may know those little monsters and goblins that come knocking aren’t real, but your pet doesn’t. Dogs and cats are creatures of habit and could become frightened or agitated by the unaccustomed sights and sounds of these cos-

tumed visitors.

In addition, frequently opened doors provide the perfect opportunity for your pet to escape, which can go unnoticed during all the commotion. Be sure all pets are wearing collars and ID tags in case of an accidental getaway.

Place live flame decorations like candles and jack-o’-lanterns out of your pet’s reach. Curious critters risk being singed or burned by the flame. They could also easily knock over a candle or pumpkin and cause a fire.

Keep all candy away from pets. Those sweets may taste great to critters, but candy, especially chocolate, can be toxic to pets. Candy wrappers can also be harmful if swallowed. Instead, tempt your pet with a few of his/her favourite treats.

Resist the urge to put

your pet in a costume.

You may think your pet looks adorable dressed as a princess, but most pets don’t like the constraints of costumes. If you do decide to play dress-up, make sure the costume is safe for your pet and doesn’t constrain his/her movement, hearing or ability to breathe. Check the costume for parts that your pet could chew off and choke on and look for dangling pieces like flowing capes that could injure him/her.

Don’t let the family dog accompany your kids on their trick-or-treating.

Children may have a difficult time handling a pet and your pooch could get loose, especially if your dog is spooked by the strange sights and sounds of all those trick-or-treaters.

No one has been able to solve the mystery of the Park Villa mailbox

Editor: Re: Mailbox plan put on hold, Oct. 28 The Optimist’s new headquarters in the church on 47A Avenue are just across the street from the Park Villa apartments.

In August of this year, Park Villa received its new mailboxes. They are indoors just inside the lobby.

Once the new mailboxes were put in place, the residents were told their mail would be delivered to these boxes. All the residents were given their own key to their mailbox.

For the first few days the residents got their mail at their mailbox. Then the mail started to again be home delivered to each apartment as the courte-

ous mailman explained that home delivery was to remain until after the election.

We had the election and one of Justin Trudeau’s promises was for us (and all of Canada) to continue to have home delivery. We will see.

Now just this week, someone (we know not who) came in and cleared an area at the corner of 47A Avenue and Laidlaw Street for mailboxes.

Nothing was said about this land clearing. They came, they cleared and they left.

The apartment manager has phoned and emailed everyone save for the Pope and the Queen trying to discover why this area

was cleared for a mailbox when the whole mailbox plan has been put on hold.

One suggestion has been this mailbox is for the new housing project across Laidlaw Street. If so, why put it on Park Villa property? If these mailboxes are to be used, then this area will be covered with all the junk mail the mailbox holders do not want and who is going to clean up that mess?

Another suggestion is these mailboxes are for the residents of Park Villa, that possibly someone forgot that Park Villa already has mailboxes.

University Women present bursaries to eight students

The Canadian Federation of University Women-South Delta presented its annual bursaries to eight local women at a meeting earlier this week.

This year’s high school winners of $1,000 each are Brianna Grayson, a recent graduate of South Delta Secondary who is now attending SFU, and Rachel Hislop-Hook, a Delta Secondary graduate who is attending university in Edmonton.

The $1,000 community bursaries, awarded to mature students continuing or returning to postsecondary studies, are Natalie Image, an MA student in voice at University in San Francisco, on her way to becoming an

opera soprano; Kathleen Mickie, at the Saskatoon Veterinarian School; Hailey Wahlberg, studying communication at Carleton; Vanessa Yu, at Boyd College, taking her DND (naturopath); and Amy Zell, studying mechanical engineering in Edmonton.

The $3,000 Laura Fowler Scholarship was awarded to Keltie Forsyth, who is taking her MFA at UBC to become a theatre director.

The Canadian Federation of University Women-South Delta is a charitable organization that raises funds to support the education of women in the community.

How would you feel if you had the power to save a life? If you have volunteered for the annual Operation Red Nose campaign in the past, chances are you already have... multiple times.

With only four weeks to the first night of Operation Red Nose, organizers are calling out for volunteers.

Over the 14 years that Operation Red Nose has been offered in the communities of Delta and Richmond, the demand for this national safe driving campaign continues to grow.

“This year, we estimate we need over 50 volunteers per night plus our headquarters team to keep up with the demand,” said local coordinator Carlene Lewall.

The campaign will be offered on nine nights this holiday season and is expected to help almost 2,000 people arrive home safely.

Volunteers, who have to be 19 years or over, are needed as drivers, naviga-

service ensures that those that call for a ride, as well as those innocent bystanders on a sidewalk or other drivers coming to and from various places, have all been spared a potential accident. We call this preventative maintenance.”

Swirling mess goes beyond garbage patch in Pacific

Out in the Pacific Ocean is the biggest garbage dump in the world. It is called the Pacific Trash Vortex or the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. A staggering quantity of trash gets trapped in the spiraling currents of the North Pacific.

The bulk of it is plastic, much no larger than confetti, making the total size difficult to measure.

Estimates range from one per cent of the size of Texas to twice the size of the continental United States. Sometimes debris from this patch escapes and washes up on our shores.

Do you ever feel you have something like that swirling around in the ocean of your brain?

Memories of all those things we have done or

What can we do?

First, we need to be careful about what we take in. Locals are getting into the Halloween spirit with spooky haunted house displays around town. Here are a few to check out: • Brent Coleman’s haunted house display in Boundary Bay is taking on a Louisiana voodoo theme this year.

There’s a lot of new stuff going on and the spookiness factor has been enhanced this time around, he says.

He’s got a beach cemetery along with voodoo stakes and an animatronic witch display complete with a boiling pot.

Coleman, who started working on props about six weeks ago, says he plans on dressing up as Beetlejuice on Halloween and giving guided tours whenever he can. His display is at 283-67A St. • Ladner’s Mistress of Darkness Robyn Balabanov will have her Halloween Horror Delta

display up and running for visitors between 6 and 9 p.m. tomorrow. This year’s display features a witch’s house with animated monsters, a dungeon with a photo area, two graveyards containing custommade gravestones along with various static and animated creatures.

Balabanov’s display, located at 5674 Grove Ave., has been scaring the neighbourhood for over a decade.

• After taking a few years off, Pat McGregor has her spooky display at 6007 Crescent Dr. in East Ladner up and running again. She says her 17-year-old grandson is helping her out this year.

In the front yard there’s a graveyard with coffins, Ghoulies as well as a werewolf while her carport hosts Freddy Kreuger along with a lab with a doctor. All in all the display features about 35 different figures.

St. Petersburg stands out among Baltic ports CHRIS MILLIKAN

ruising aboard HAL’s Eurodam familiarizes us with captivating Baltic ports.

Of them all, St Petersburg stands out.

There, ship’s excursions prove perfect for first time visitors like us. With the need for costly visas eliminated and transportation simplified, two sightseeing days are filled to the max.

Local guide Tanya introduces her storied city.

Named for his patron saint, Apostle Peter, Tsar Peter founded St Petersburg in 1703. This new capital provided crucial Baltic access and prospered, despite frigid winters. Nowadays, icebreakers keep the port open year round.

Our tour reveals a dizzying kaleidoscope of legendary city sights. Frenchinspired architecture tags this city as “Paris of the East.” An enormous equestrian statue memorializes Tsar Peter while nearby Decembrists’ Square recalls an 1825 revolt.

Massive red granite columns support St Isaac’s, a Russian Orthodox cathedral designed to accommodate 14,000 standing worshippers.

Driving through old neighbourhoods and on into the countryside, we reach World Heritage Peterhof, Tsar Peter’s summer palace.

“Starting as a small family residence, this royal complex eventually encompassed these auxiliary buildings, upper and lower parks, several palaces and even a forest,” Tanya explains.

Tsar Peter designed Peterhof’s first 30 rooms in 1714. Daughter Elizabeth and grandson’s wife Catherine the Great expanded his efforts.

From the front terrace, we gaze over the Grand Cascade. This magnificent creation incorporates 64 fountains, 200 gilded statues, bas-reliefs and other ornamentation. Amid its central pond, Rastrelli’s golden Samson wrestles a lion.

Catherine, we learn, commissioned Houdon to create this likeness of the French philosopher, her beloved friend and correspondent.

Another gallery encloses Tsar Peter’s original Rembrandts, collected while studying shipbuilding in Holland.

Adjoining rooms contain Catherine’s extensive masterpiece collections by da Vinci, Raphael and Goya.

Paintings by Degas, Renoir, Monet, Cezanne, Gauguin and Matisse form the largest collection of French art outside France.

Hazel is one of the trees associated with Halloween along with willow. Both were considered magic trees with an especial attraction for water. They are still used for water divining.

Unfortunately hazels in North America have been attacked by Eastern Filbert blight and whole orchards of European hazels have already been torn up. The contorted hazel is one of those affected. Native Canadian hazels have some resistance.

Willow’s magic included its ability to relieve pain and to heal. The active substance in willow is salicylic acid, which is now made synthetically in the pain-reliever known as aspirin.

Cuttings can root faster and stronger if started in willow water. This is made by using water that has had many small-cut willow twigs soaking in it. The twigs are removed after a day or so and the cuttings either started in that water or watered several times with it.

It’s interesting how many of the plants once used to protect against evil spirits were also believed to have healing potential.

For instance, ivy was once believed to cure toothaches and make corns vanish.

Artist Donna Zhang and her students will have their work on display at Gallery 1710 in Tsawwassen this weekend.

Zhang will have one of her many Tibetan portraits at the exhibit, which has a “meet the artists” reception on Sunday.

She’s travelled to Tibet several times in recent years and has gained an “appreciation of the strength of character that shows in the Tibetans’ faces,” her artist bio states.

Zhang, who lives in Coquitlam, obtained her master’s degree of art from Saitama University in Japan in 1997. She subsequently immigrated to Canada and worked as a professional artist.

Tsawwassen’s Birgit Coath is one of Zhang’s 10 students with work in the local show.

As the only three 18-year-old Delta girls playing rep “A” softball this past season, Taylor Woodward, Olivia Priestlay and Keeley Ainge sure made plenty of noise.

A week after Woodward was named Softball B.C.’s Minor Athlete of the Year for her memorable season with the ’97 Delta Heat, Priestlay has been recognized for her decorated career by Softball Canada.

The Delta Secondary gradate is the 2015 recipient of the Ethel Boyce Memorial Achievement Award — presented annually to a female and male player who has exhibited leadership traits and skills in softball. Ontario’s Greg Hammell was the co-winner. Both receive $1,000 to help towards their education costs.

Priestlay is now in her first-year with the UBC Thunderbirds where she is playing under coach Gord Collings. Her impressive minor career includes participating in four Canadian Championships with the ’97 White Rock Renegades, including this past summer when they fell to Woodward’s ’97 Heat in the gold medal game.

The standout third baseman was a tournament allstar at U16 Nationals in 2013 and also won the top batter award that year. She has played in seven provincial championships.

Priestlay joined Woodward on Team B.C. which dominated its opponents in route to winning gold at the 2015 Western Canada Games back in August. She will officially be presented the Ethel Boyce Award at the Softball Canada Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet on Nov. 14 in Winnipeg.

Ainge, also a Delta Secondary graduate, was a dominant pitcher/outfielder with the Fraser Valley Fusion who is now continuing her career with Woodward at Douglas College.

Winskill Dolphins’ Markus Thormeyer makes verbal committment to join Trojans It’s a change in course in more ways than one for Tsawwassen swimming standout Markus Thormeyer.

Coming off an impressive summer competing for Canada at the Pan American Games and World Junior Championships, the Winskill Dolphins Swim Club product has made a verbal commitment to continue his career at the University of Southern California (USC). Thormeyer is currently with Swim Canada’s High Performance Center, based out of the UBC Aquatic Centre after graduating from South Delta Secondary School in June.

The move to a NCAA Division One program means Thormeyer must make the significant adjustment from competing in a 50-metre Olympic size pool to the much smaller U.S. college pools which are typically 25 yards in length. Yet, he is still expected to make an immediate impact with the Trojans’ sprint freestyle and backstroke squads.

At the World Juniors in Singapore, Thormeyer helped Canada capture gold tin he 4x100 mixed freestyle relay thanks to a huge second leg swim. Teamed with Javier Acevedo, Penny Oleksiak and Taylor Ruck, Thormeyer swam a blistering time of 48.77 seconds to move Canada up two positions.

It was then up to Oleksiak and Ruck to complete the comeback with a winning time of 3:27.71 to hold off Austraila (3:28.59) and Russia (3:28.79).

He also qualified for the finals in three individual swims, highlighted by personal best clockings in the 100 backstroke (55.11 seconds) and 100 free (49.76).

Back in July, he was the youngest member of Canada’s swim team at the Pan American Games in Toronto. He also won the 100 back at the National Championships.

Earlier this month, Thormeyer was named Delta’s Male Youth Athlete of the Year.

South Delta Midget A1 Storm’s season is off to a terrific start, taking top honours at a tournament in Kelowna on the weekend. The locals rolled to four straight wins, including a 3-1 triumph over West Kelowna in the final.

Midget A1 Storm avenge early loss to capture tournament in Kelowna South Delta overcomes tough schedule and flu bug to win gold South Delta Midget A1 Storm have started off the season on a winning note by capturing the Kelowna Minor Hockey Midget Tournament last weekend.

Despite having to play two 7 a.m. games and dealing with a flu bug that struck the team, the Storm gutted out a well-deserved tournament crown. They scored 23 goals while only giving up 12 over the course of the five games thanks to some great defensive play and strong goaltending.

The opening game Friday afternoon saw the Storm come out sluggish against West Kelowna. The Okanagan squad scored a lucky goal with just over a minute remaining to pull out a 2-1 win. Jordan Bogress had the lone South Delta goal, while head coach Lawson (Boots) Boutilier told his players he hoped to get another shot at West Kelowna.

An early Saturday morning start against a very physical Penticton team saw the Storm capitalize on

a number of second period power play opportunities to break the game open in route to a 4-2 win.

Bogress paced the attack with a pair, while Greg Porter and Matt Rogers each added singles.

Back on the ice Saturday afternoon, the Storm cruised to a 9-2 victory over the Spokane Junior Chiefs.

Leading the way with four goals was recent addition Bryn Davies. Porter chipped in with two. Singles went to Jared Garcha, Jeevan Bath and Bogress.

The Storm then had to wait until later that evening to see if their victories and 2-1 record were enough to carry them into the semi finals.

The reward was another 7 a.m. game, this time against a very quick and physical team from St. Albert, Alberta.

South Delta came out of the gate firing on all cylinders and were up 6-1 at the end of the first period. St. Albert then mounted a comeback and the Storm held on for a 6-5 win.

Porter had a hat trick. Also scoring were Connor Bavaro, Zack Vaughan and Davies Coach Boutilier then got his wish.

The final was a rematch with West Kelowna who had defeated Salmon Arm in the other semi final.

Despite playing their fifth game in less than 48 hours, the Storm were determined to avenge the earlier defeat and did just that, overcoming a 1-0 deficit to produce a wellearned 3-1 victory.

Porter continued his torrid scoring pace with two more goals to give him seven in the tournament. Ethan Fowler also scored.

Other members of the Storm include goaltenders Tyler McLennan and Josh Morrell, defencemen Jesse Conroy, Hayden Dance, Thomas Morison, Connor Sagert and Matthew Salas and forwards Tyler Rogers, Emile Tracy and Zack Valana.

Assistant Rob Bogress rounds out the coaching staff.

Tsawwassen Shores offers ocean side living Stacey and Brad Kahn spent months looking to buy a family home in a neighbourhood that would offer them a real sense of community for their two young sons.

HILTON (BEAVERS), Ellen Laurene February 18, 1920 - October 09, 2015 Laurene passed away peacefully at Ridge Meadows Hospital on a sunny autumn day. Fall was her favorite season as she loved watching the changing colours of the trees. Laurene led a productive and inspiring life.

Born in Exeter, Ontario, she spent her early years on the family farm near Exeter. As a teenager she moved with her family in to Exeter, where she excelled at music and played the organ in the Methodist church.

After high school she attended the London, Ontario School of Nursing where she graduated as a Registered Nurse. She met her husband, Don, when he was stationed at the Air Force base near London, Ontario. When WWII ended they married and settled in Vancouver, BC, Don’s home town. Laurene nursed at VGH and other Vancouver hospitals until she retired in 1986. They moved to Delta and travelled extensively to Europe, China, Australia and other countries. Laurene was an avid rockhound and Lapidarian and a member of both the Richmond and Delta Gem and Mineral Clubs. She enjoyed searching for rocks with her pick and shovel traversing up steep mountain slopes and down dark mine shafts. The garage became her lapidarian workshop, and it held rock tumblers, saws, drills and numerous tools of the trade. She crafted gold and silver jewellery, and stone carvings, but was best known for her gem tree. She donated many of her trees to her clubs’ annual shows, and it gave her great delight to see the look on children’s faces when they chose their gem tree prize. Laurene led a busy life, but she always had time for family. She was a beloved daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.

Pre-deceased by her husband, Don, in 1992, she is survived by her children Ron (Tara), Janet, and Jack, as well as grandchildren Sarah (John) and Ryan, and two great-grandsons Matthew and Andrew.
