Surprise ending for towers Relief felt all around after Whatcom County official denies application due to height BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

It was a sweet but unexpected victory for Tsawwassen and Point Roberts residents this week. Just days before a Whatcom County public hearing was to begin in Bellingham on a contentious proposal to erect radio towers in the Point, the county’s hearing examiner announced Tuesday he was denying the application by BBC Broadcasting Inc. The examiner, who also cancelled the hearing, citied the fact the towers exceed height limits in the American peninsula. “It was a pleasant surprise,”

said Tsawwassen resident Jim Ronback, a member of the Cross Border Coalition Against the Towers that has waged battle with the proposal for more than a year. “There was concern as to whether FCC regulations could exempt it (height limit) but we felt the FCC preemption only applied to cell phone towers, not radio towers. They are not essential infrastructure.” Mayor Lois Jackson called it’s a tremendous victory for the community. “The level of engagement, lobbying and hard work undertaken by many concerned Delta citizens, who banded together and

citizens, we have achieved the desired outcome we sought.” BBC Broadcasting Inc. applied to erect five 45-metre (150-foot) steel towers at an undeveloped lot on McKenzie Way, about 330 metres from the border. The towers would have transmitted South Asian radio station KRPI, AM 1550, which broadcasts from studios in Richmond. The station currently broadcasts using antenna in Ferndale, Wash., but wanted a stronger signal for its Lower Mainland audience. Delta is bringing in a consultant to develop a strategy to ensure long-term sustainability of the local business sector in the face of a pair of massive shopping malls taking shape at the Tsawwassen First Nation. Construction is underway on the two malls, Tsawwassen Mills and Tsawwassen Commons, which, when complete, will feature almost 1.8 million square feet of retail space. The malls are expected George Harvie to open in Delta CAO the spring of 2016. There have been concerns about the impacts the development would have on the local business community, which is made up of mostly small, locallyowned operations. “At this time of great change and uncertainty for the business community, Delta should assist the business communities in developing a strategy to ensure these vital pieces of the community are sustainable for the longterm,” Delta CAO George Harvie stated this week in a report to Delta council. Harvie told civic politicians other cities are facing similar issues. Once hired by Delta, the consultant will work with the municipality, Tsawwassen Business Improvement Association, Ladner Business Association, Delta Chamber of Commerce and Tourism Delta to develop the South Delta Business Sustainability Strategy. The murder charge against a Delta police constable following an on-duty shooting is part of a growing trend in this country, says one expert. Former Sgt. Rick Parent, who spent 30 years with the Delta Police Department, is an expert in police shootings. Parent, who has a doctorate in criminology and is an associate professor in the Police Studies program at Simon Fraser University, did his master’s thesis on the phenomenon of suicide by police, which garnered international attention. In the past, Parent said, officers would, more often than not, be given the benefit of the doubt. An officer would write a report following an incident, and it would be taken at face value. However, he said that over the last decade there’s been a growing trend where the public and the courts no longer automatically believe a police officer’s version of events. The trend started before Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski was Tasered by police at Vancouver International Airport in 2007, but, he said, that fatality intensified the situation. Over the years, there has been an increase in the number of police officers facing charges from incidents in the line of duty. Delta police Const. Jordan MacWilliams was charged this week with second-degree murder in the death of 48-year-old Mehrdad Bayrami following a five-hour police standoff outside Starlight Casino in

New Westminster in 2012. MacWilliams, who has been with the department for close to seven years, was a member of the Municipal Integrated Emergency Response Team at the time, and one of many officers responding to the incident. The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) looked into the shooting and last year chief civilian director Richard Rosenthal forwarded a report to Crown counsel. The IIO does not recommend charges but can forward a report to the Crown following an investigation where it’s believed an officer may have committed an offence. “It’s unusual, but it’s also a trend,” Parent said of the charge. “If there’s any type

For over a year, opponents on both sides of the border have been fighting the application on several fronts, arguing KRPI’s operation in Ferndale causes considerable public nuisance due to interference with household electronic equipment. Delta-Richmond East MP Kerry-Lynne Findlay, noting she’s been in dialogue with Washington Congresswoman Suzan Del Benne on the issue, was

among those scheduled to speak at the hearing. “I am pleased that the American authorities responsible for decisions on this proposal have addressed the concerns that I and the community have raised,” she said. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington, who was also scheduled to speak, said the reason for denial was a wonderful surprise. “I am just so very pleased for all the people who worked tirelessly to achieve this result. Besting the system doesn’t happen often,” she said. “We should also be grateful there was

decisions. We sometimes encounter violent situations that force us to react in a manner to protect the public and ourselves. These decisions will be the subject of intense examination by governing bodies, who will hold us accountable for our actions for years thereafter. While no other profession is under the microscope to the same degree as policing, no other role in society is granted the same powers as the police. With our powers, we must also accept scrutiny.” A group of residents from Beach Grove and Boundary Bay sent a large floral arrangement to Delta police headquarters Tuesday afternoon with a card expressing their support for MacWilliams and thanking him for his sacrifice. “Every day police officers put themselves in harm’s way and to receive public support like this is very humbling and gratifying,” said media relations officer Sgt. Sarah Swallow. “It is rewarding to know that the majority of the public stands behind us and the tough, split-second decisions that we make in the course of our duties. “The community of Delta has always been incredibly supportive of the Delta Police Department; but it is one thing to have a supportive public during good times, it is another thing to see that outpouring of support so strongly during difficult times.” Swallow said the department has received many supportive calls and emails this week. MacWilliams is scheduled to appear in court again in December.

of grey area, the officer is charged with murder.” Earlier this year, an Ontario judge threw out a second-degree murder charge against Toronto police officer David Cavanagh. Cavanagh, also a member of an emergency response team, was charged after his gun discharged, killing a violent suspect in 2010. He was initially charged with manslaughter but that was upgraded to seconddegree murder. In a case closer to home, earlier this month a Kamloops RCMP officer was acquitted of breach of trust charges after he and other officers watched two female inmates have sex in a jail cell. Parent said the trend

toward charging officers could have a negative effect on policing. It could make some officers question putting themselves at risk when no one is backing their actions. “Regardless, at the end of the day, I think you’re going to find that this is a trend that is going to continue.” In an open letter to staff Monday, Delta police Chief Jim Cessford, said scrutiny comes with the territory. “In light of what has happened, it is important that we continue to be proud of who we are and the integral role we play in society,” he said. “We sign on to this job knowing that we will face risk... “As police officers, we are called upon to make instantaneous, life-or-death

a hearing commissioner who looked so closely at the documentation and read the law so closely. I’m happy for Point Roberts and thrilled for Tsawwassen.” According to the county planning department, once the hearing examiner makes his final determination, the applicant, any party of record or any county department may appeal the decision to the Whatcom County council within 10 business days. A written notice of appeal must be filed that either addresses an alleged specific error of law or how the decision is clearly erroneous on the entire record. Opponents believe an appeal will likely be filed.

STRATEGY from page 1 The aim of the strategy will be to provide advice on what Delta and the business community can do to ensure the sector is sustainable. Harvie said Delta would expect a report from the consultant within three months of starting the project. Construction is well underway on the two malls. Pre-loading began in January and construction of the superstructure started this summer. Ivanhoe Cambridge is behind Tsawwassen Mills, which will include approximately 1.2 million square

feet of retail space with 16 anchor tenants. Property Development Group is building the adjacent Tsawwassen Commons, which will have 550,000 square feet of outdoor retail space. Earlier this year, Ivanhoe Cambridge announced that a Bass Pro Shops is planned for Tsawwassen Mills. The 145,000-square-foot outdoor recreational retailer will be the fourth in Canada and the first in B.C. Property Development Group has also announced its first anchor tenants, including a 108,000-squarefoot Walmart.

Hospital advocacy group in the works

Doug Massey says it’s once again time for the community to rise up to demand quality health care services BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

Plans are in the works to form a citizens’ group to advocate for better health care in Delta. Longtime resident and community activist Doug Massey, who was one of many members of the now defunct Save Delta Hospital Society, said it’s once again time to show support for the hospital. He was prompted to help several others organize an advocacy group, aimed at putting pressure on Fraser Health and the province, after doctors at the hospital made public their concerns about the level or urgent care patients receive due to the lack of a fully functioning surgical program. “A group of us met earlier this week and are making plans for a campaign that will launch next week,” said Massey. They said they’re pleased the minister has agreed to meet with them. Delta South MLA Vicki Hunting said it’s time Fraser Health considered the situation with an open mind. “The regional delivery of health care is complex at the best of times,” Huntington said. “But when 31 doctors raise a red flag, the administration simply has to review the problem. Surely there is a compromise that will be cost effective and still satisfy Delta’s medical staff and improve patient satisfaction.”

MK Delta proposal divides candidates

Some seeking council seat adamantly opposed to project while others suggest allowing process to play out BY

ADRIAN MACNAIR

Optimist contributor

Thirteen Delta council hopefuls tried their luck at appealing to voters in North Delta Tuesday evening, discussing a variety of issues from transportation to marijuana grow-ops. The first divisive topic of the meeting hosted by the Delta Chamber of Commerce was the MK Delta Lands proposal to build 1,100 residential units at Highway 91 and 72nd Avenue. Some were adamant there can be no building on what they believe is part of the environmentallysensitive “lagg” of Burns Bog. Incumbent Sylvia Bishop said if it were not for the man-made highway separating the land from the contiguous mass of Burns Bog, it would be part of the ecological conservancy today. Many others agreed. Lori Mayhew said Delta needs to work with the Burns Bog Conservation Society to protect the land from development. Jennifer Thoss was even more direct: “This is

an easy question. No.” Nicholas Wong, the youngest candidate on the ballot at 24, said his environmental convictions are strong and would be opposed to building density on any green space in Delta. Incumbent Jeannie Kanakos cited the different iterations of the project indicating the public isn’t interested in development there. “What you’re looking at is a significant project that seems to be moving in the wrong direction,” she said. Others had more practical reasons for their opposition. Ron Calliou said no to development, citing increase in traffic and accidents. “Just because you can, doesn’t mean you necessarily should,” he said. Johann Ackermann, meanwhile, said building on the bog could be risky because if anything goes wrong then Delta will be on the hook for approving the development, echoing similar criticisms made about the Southlands development in Tsawwassen.

Some candidates, like incumbent Ian Paton, were more neutral in their stance, saying they’ll wait until the proposal comes before council before jumping to a decision. Incumbent Bruce McDonald said the developer has the legal right to come before council despite the difficulty they might have getting it through. Fellow incumbent Robert Campbell pointed out the proposal has changed significantly since 2013 and developers have the right to follow through. “You’ve got to put your-

self in their shoes,” he said. “You’d want your chance to appear before council.” Rod Binder said MK Delta Lands already have the right to certain land uses that might be worse than what the developers are proposing, adding the project has changed based on public feedback. “This appears to be a land owner that listens,” he said, citing the challenge of

finding housing in North Delta. Peter Mattoo said he doesn’t want to see the bog increase in size, adding that just as people wouldn’t want housing encroaching on the bog, the bog should not encroach on housing. There are few, if any, areas left in North Delta to develop, he said. If elected, he would carefully review what’s being proposed and look at the pros and cons. Heather King had perhaps the most interesting idea of all. She said people in Delta will always be worried when a developer owns environmentally sensitive land. She proposed a land swap between MK Delta Lands and the municipality that would allow the developer to acquire Paterson Park in Delta. Another topic that generated a great deal of discussion was housing for

seniors and those on fixed incomes. While not offering any concrete suggestions, Calliou said it makes sense to take care of those who took care of us. Many candidates, like Binder and Thoss, talked about needing a greater “diversity” of housing options and increased density in North Delta. Mayhew said seniors want to stay in their homes and community, which means redevelopment of lots allowing for more houses on the same footprint. Mattoo said he’d like to see more seniors centres built in North Delta and then develop housing options around those locations. • The chamber joined forces with the Optimist to host a similar forum last night in Ladner. The following are some of the calls the Delta police responded to in the previous week: Tsawwassen • Oct. 15, 8:45 p.m., 1500-block of Golf Club Drive: Complainant reported her young son had answered the door and a male indicated he had come to measure the carpets. Son did not allow the male into the residence. Investigation found the male had left and gone to the correct address next door. No problem and investigation concluded. • Oct. 16, 8:31 a.m., 1500-block of Gillespie Road: Complainant reported her vehicle parked in the driveway had the rear windows broken sometime overnight. Nothing stolen from vehicle. • Oct. 18, 8:27 a.m., 5500-block of 13A Avenue: Report was received that someone had thrown an object at the complainant’s sunroom and smashed the window. No suspects or witnesses. Ladner • Oct. 13, 9:17 a.m., Dowler Road and Paton Drive: A black folding leather “Diesel” brand wallet was found in the area.

The wallet contains various cards, including bank cards, and cash. The owner can claim at police headquarters in Ladner.

• Oct. 13, 3:54 p.m., 6500-block of Ladner Trunk Road: Complainant left her purse in a local business when she left late in the evening. TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW I can’t say for certain, but I suspect the windstorm that ripped through here Tuesday night was caused when all those folks opposed to the radio towers exhaled at the same time. With a five-day Whatcom County public hearing set to begin next Monday in Bellingham, the hearing examiner surprised everyone by announcing Tuesday morning that he was denying the application based on the fact the structures exceed the height limit for Point Roberts. I’m sure opponents don’t really care what derailed the project that had caused so much angst on both sides of the border, but I find it curious that the height of the towers was the proposal’s eventual undoing. Given the five-tower array proposed for an undeveloped lot just south of the international border was always slated to be 45 metres (150 feet), it’s odd that it took the better part of a year-anda-half to quash it on those grounds. From what I’ve been told, the radio station tried to get around the height limit by arguing the antenna farm would be an essential public utility, claiming it fills a need in the tiny American peninsula. Such arguments defy common sense given 50,000 watts is overkill in the extreme for such a small area and that a Punjabi-speaking station doesn’t provide a lot of benefit for a community that doesn’t have a single Punjabi-speaking resident. Regardless of the flawed rationale, or a host of other peculiarities, the proposal was just days away from going to a hearing, the outcome of which opponents thought would be a toss up. There was a real possibility the hearing examiner could have granted a height variance, paving the way for the towers to be erected and the communities of Point Roberts and Tsawwassen to be blanketed by radio waves that would have undoubtedly wreaked havoc with household electronic devices. Thankfully that won’t happen, assuming an appeal, if launched, isn’t successful. It also means those who spearheaded the coalition that met this challenge head-on will now be able to get back to their own lives after having devoted thousands of hours to the cause. One of those who led that charge, Jennifer Urquhart, summed it up very well in an email she sent out to her coalition colleagues Tuesday afternoon: “Congratulations to all who have toiled, worried, drafted, door-knocked, registered, researched, written, called, connected, pushed, donated and donated again, cajoled, emailed, hounded and prayed. Sometime the right thing actually gets done.”

No need to wait for Halloween to get hands on ‘fun treats’ MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT According to Forbes Inc., Halloween is now an $8 billion a year industry. I can believe it! Right around the Labour Day weekend, the end aisle displays of candy start to show up and the dollar store begins to hang its costume displays. If there were a way to produce a variety of pumpkin that would ripen in August, I am sure we would see those as well. Halloween candy has certainly changed over the years. The trickor-treat menu is, for the most, part mini chocolate bars that are marketed the first week of September or slightly earlier. What used to be called Halloween candy has now morphed in to an additional product line called “Back to school fun treats.” The marketing tries to tell us these are not chocolate bars at all, but rather some sort of legitimate

food group that can shamelessly make its way in to the kids’ lunch boxes. The inventor of the back to school fun treat must surely be in the Madison Avenue hall of fame. Getting us to buy all those chocolate bars for weeks on end is genius. Fun treats are convenient and damned cute, and positioning them as a snack item slightly legitimizes the offering when we toss a couple in the lunch bag or offer them as an after school snack. Parents have been sucked into the massive merchandising efforts of multinational corporations like Nestle and others that recognize an opportunity when they see one. They know that mom and dad are busy and that convenience is king. It may be that we think a couple of fun treats may alleviate the guilt associated with not being able to spend enough quality time with the kids. Who knows? I do know that retailers are making an enormous effort to ensure we have the opportunity to purchase these things at every turn. In one casual meander through a local grocer the other day, I was able to find six massive end aisle displays of mini chocolate bars. This did not include the 200square-foot floor display of every

mini chocolate bar known to man. It was a fun treat Mecca. The convenience of the fun treat only serves to highlight the ingenuity of savvy marketers who can easily persuade us to drop many unneeded calories from sugar into the lunch box, no doubt ensuring additional love and respect from our children. I have not been immune to the fun treat explosion. I have, in the past, felt obliged to pick some up in September, convincing myself that they might run out before the big day. Ya right! Gulling down a few fun treats while watching TV is easy. Why have two when you can have six? They’re so small. Kids should not be denied the spoils of Halloween over a couple of weeks but kids and parents should not be exposed to this overthe-top marketing of junk food for such an extended period of time. I was talking nutrition and fun treats with a Grade 2/3 class on Wednesday and Mrs. Thomson, teacher of the class, had some sage advice for her students. She told her kids to make sure that Mother Nature puts a snack in their lunch every day. Balance is good. Happy Halloween!

Candidate doesn’t want to get elected based on race Editor: Re: Local government lacks diversity, Oct. 17 As a lifetime resident of Delta and one of two candidates for Delta council who are visible minorities, I strongly disagree with the opinion voiced by Peter Mattoo. I believe that we are blessed to live in Canada, a nation founded on the principle that a person’s individual merit is the sole factor in their success. As such, I echo Mayor Lois Jackson’s comment in the same article that “Canadians are open to all cultures” and that race should not be an issue taken

into consideration in an election. Good reason is blind to colour or creed and good reason alone should determine the way the citizens of Delta vote. Whether positively or negatively, making ethnicity an election issue where no problem exists is racism. It is the same as if an individual were to refuse to elect me because I am of Asian descent. If anyone were to vote for me on the colour of my skin, I would feel as though my intelligence and my convictions were being insulted. Learn my views, feel the force of my enthusiasm, but ignore

my race and religion. I sympathize with and share the concerns regarding respect for cultural heritage. However, the best way to tackle the issue is through the formation of community groups and political action. Should new ideas and new blood be infused in a government that lacks meaningful discourse? Absolutely. Should that change come on the wings of racial undertones? Absolutely not. So, come November, vote blind to race, vote for sound judgment, and vote for good reason. Nicholas Wong

Rotarians enjoy taking kids to hockey game Editor: A group of Tsawwassen Rotarians sponsored some kids from the Tsawwassen and Ladner Boys and Girls Clubs to a Vancouver Giants hockey game last Saturday night. The reason Rotarians from all over Vancouver were attending the game was to promote our End Polio Now campaign, which was highlighted by having the End Polio Now logo shining on the side of the

Pacific Coliseum. We had a bus so we thought why not invite kids from the Boys and Girls Club and help them have a great time. We had a full bus — Rotarians, Boys and Girls kids and the Interactors (junior Rotarians) from South Delta Secondary. We were so proud of the Boys and Girls Club kids. They were very well behaved and respectful. Whatever the staff at the

Boys and Girls Clubs is doing, keep it up, you are making a difference with these kids. So who got the most out of Saturday? It was us. The laughs, the energy, the bridging of the generations made this night memorable for all the Rotarians and me. It will probably become a new tradition as we were already talking about next year on the bus. Tom Smith

Heartwarming experience

Editor: I just returned home from a truly heartwarming experience: I attended a performance of The Secret Mask at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. This Sidekick Players Club production truly shines. What a touching play, delivered by a superb cast. I found myself drawn in and captivated through every nuance wrung from their characters. Bravo! The Secret Mask follows the recovery of a stroke victim, through the exploration of ensuing relationships: full of pathos, comedy, hope and healing. No wonder Rick Chafe has just been nominated for a Governor General’s Literary Award for this play. The Secret Mask is into its final weekend, and you owe it to yourself to secure a ticket. Carol Jones

Production by Sidekick Players tackles sensitive topic with dignity and grace

Editor: I attended Sidekick’s production of The Secret Mask last weekend not knowing what to expect. This is a fairly new play and I hadn’t heard about it prior to reading in the Optimist that playwright Rick Chafe has been nominated for a Governor General’s Award for this script. That was the reason I bought a ticket.

The topic was one that I wasn’t sure I would want to see on stage as so many of us know someone who has suffered a stroke, but what I was privileged to witness was so much more than someone suffering a stroke. This beautiful story is about a father, his son and his speech therapist, with a few other colourful characters he encounters on his journey to wellness. He is

left with aphasia and memory loss, which results in some very funny dialogue. Chafe based his lead character on his father and the aftermath of his stroke. When I left the theatre, I felt like I personally knew “Ernie.” I was so intrigued by this character, I did a bit of research when I got home and discovered the real “Ernie” was Fred Chafe, a very well respected journalist who worked with the Canadian Press in Vancouver. I would encourage anyone, whether you’ve experienced a stroke in your family or friends, to see this production. If you’ve never experienced this, you

should see this as well. It is uplifting, heart warming and I left feeling a sense of hope and strength, should I ever have to encounter this again in my life. Our community is so fortunate to have such a talented group of people in the Sidekick Players Club. This is not a popular play (but I am sure it will be) and hasn’t been produced much given its age, but this group has presented it to us with dignity and grace. Thank you. Sharlene Terrett Editor’s note: The final two performances of The Secret Mask take place tonight and tomorrow night at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Curtain is at 8 p.m.

Poor sweet Thelma has had a rough couple of years. She was originally brought to the SHELTERas a stray in January of 2013 in rough shape. We had her all checked up and she was adopted shortly after to a sweet elderly woman. Thelma was showered with love and helped this woman have a full and meaningful last year. Unfortunately, Thelma’s sweet owner passed away in early May of 2014 and Thelma was brought back to our shelter. Thelma does not like the company of other cats and has never lived with a dog. A home all to herself would be best, this older lady doesn’t need any more stress in her life. Miss Thelma is looking for an understanding family with big hearts who are willing to make her last years amazing and full of love! It’s her turn after all!

A Warm and Joyful welcome to...

Daniel Kirkegaard

Sacred Heart Catholic Church

Tsawwassen United Church

Keeping our balance I received an email from my friend and colleague, Major Rev. Jim Short at Ladner United Church. You may know him from his writing in this slot. He is also a padre with the Canadian Armed Forces and served in Afghanistan. With his permission, I offer you some of his thoughts on the shocking events in Ottawa. “We’ve woken up to a second event in our own country of violence which appears to have targeted members of our armed forces, my brothers and sisters, as well as our elected officials. We again approach that time when we solemnly {observe} the time of Remembrance. So, I ask you to pray for military personnel and their families and all who are touched personally by this trauma. If you know someone in the

military, give them a call and ask them how they are doing today. Please do not make those horrible naive assumptions that we do around terrorist activity. In our world those people who identify terrorism with any faith are not true worshippers or people who practice faith. ...People that do these kinds of acts know that they succeed not only by hurting others but by scaring us in our daily lives. I am not easily frightened. And lastly, perhaps the hardest one, we follow Jesus who calls us to “love our enemies” — and to be peacemakers. So, with my own personal sense of being shaken and saddened... may the peace of God that surpasses all of our understandings keep your hearts, minds and bodies in the peace of Christ.”

Family Fright Fest returns Annual Halloween event back at McKee next Wednesday evening BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Family Fright Fest is right around the corner for some more spooky fun this Halloween season. The event, which takes place at the McKee Seniors’ Recreation Centre, McKee heritage house and the surrounding area, is set for next Wednesday in Ladner. Students from South Delta Secondary will once again transform the McKee heritage home into a haunted house. Students are going with Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas as this year’s theme for the project. Visitors can expect to see characters from the movie like Sally, Jack Skellington, Santa, Oogie Boogie, Dr. Finkelstein, The Mayor, Zero, Lock, Shock and Barrel and many more, notes SDSS teacher Tracy Neff. Students will guide people through the house, which is appropriate for audience members of all ages, she says. Around 130 students are working on the project, adds Neff. “They’ve been working really, really hard so kudos to them,” says Delta recreation program coordinator Kelly Wilson. McKee seniors are involved in Family Fright Fest once again and the fun at

seniors’ centre includes trick-or-treating. “I think the main thing about this event that’s so cool is you’ve got youth and seniors coming together to create a really great community atmosphere,” says Wilson. With the Boys and Girls Club and library joining in as well, it creates a good sense of community groups coming together, she adds. There will also be hayrides, spooky stories, a bouncy castle, crafts, live music, dancers and food, including the Kee Café and, new for this year, food trucks. Homeowners on the hayride route have been encouraged to do a little Halloween decorating. “We’ll see what happens. It’s the first time we’ve tried it. We’re excited about it,” says Wilson. Family Fright Fest takes place in Ladner next Wednesday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Those coming are encouraged to dress up, bring friends and family, and have a “frightfully great time,” a Delta press release says. The haunted house will also be running next Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. • Delta advises there will be a road closure the night of Family Fright Fest: 47th Avenue will be closed between Arthur Drive and 51st Street from 4 to 8 p.m.

Lots of spooky events around town

Looking to get into the Halloween spirit? Here is a spooky list of some of the events and displays around town: • Everyone is invited to the Point Roberts Fire Department’s second annual Spooooktacular Haunted House and social at 2030 Benson Rd. on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 2 to 5 p.m. There will be treats for goblins of any age. Come as you are — costumed or not. • Visit the Tsawwassen Arts Centre on Thursday, Oct. 30 from 5 to 8 p.m. and check out the Spooky Theatre, enjoy haunted story times, ghost hunts, trick-or-treating, crafts and a pumpkin carving contest. Bring your pre-carved jack-o-lantern to display, or bring your own pumpkin and carve it at the arts centre. Prizes awarded for people’s choice favourite pumpkin. Admission is free. Check www.delta.ca for more on fun Halloween events at civic venues. • Halloween Horror Delta, presented by local Mistress of Darkness Robyn Balabanov, is back for 2014. The display, with new props and a new photo area, will be open for visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. on Halloween night at 5674 Grove Ave., Ladner. Treats will be given to trick-ortreaters in costume. Friday, Oct. 31. The non-scary, dry, warm and safe family fun is free and sponsored by mall merchants. The mall is also hold-

ing a designer pumpkin contest with adult and children’s categories. Visit www. TsawwassenTownCentreMall.com for more. • Brent Coleman is bringing his Halloween spirit to the ‘Bay. Coleman, who recently moved with his wife and eightyear-old son to Tsawwassen (283-67A St.) from East Vancouver, is putting together a haunted yard display for some spooky fun for the community this Halloween. • Ann and Tim Enno will once again have a display set up at their Tsawwassen home (543-55A St.). A front yard cemetery with a variety of ghouls and ghosts is in the works. “Every year is kind of different where we set things up,” says Ann. • The crew at Beach Grove Café has got into the Halloween spirit. The cafe has a couple of spooky customers on display, a bedazzled skeleton and a haggy witch, sitting at a table enjoying a latte. • The Burns Bog Halloween Spookfest takes place Saturday, Nov. 1 at the Delta Nature Reserve (behind Planet Ice Delta - 10388 Nordel Crt.) from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be activities and a costume contest. Admission costs $5 per child.

New opera hits home for local

Stickboy explores the life of a young boy impacted by bullying BY

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

Stickboy, a new Vancouver Opera production, hits close to home for Tsawwassen’s Nicholas Harrison. The opera explores the life of a young boy impacted by bullying, something Harrison endured in school as well. “It’s very topical. I think it’s really important,” he says. “I want people to go and see it and then maybe it’ll bring up discussions at home and amongst family and friends about issues about bullying, or being bullied.” Harrison is the fight director for the opera, which began yesterday and will run until Nov. 7 at the Vancouver Playhouse Theatre. “My role is to really make sure that the actors, the performers, are safe, but they can execute these fights convincingly.” He says the fight scenes really serve the piece well. Harrison, who also went through physical and sexual abuse in

school, says bullying can affect someone for the rest of their life and the people around them. “I think it’s really important and I think it’s amazing the Vancouver Opera is taking this on.” Asked about any advice he would have for someone currently being bullied, Harrison says to tell people about it. “Bullies like to operate on people’s fear. The code of the schoolyard, when I was going to school, was silence — don’t talk about it. That has to be broken.” He adds if you’ve been bullied or abused, know it’s not your fault. “The issues of bullying, and more broadly of how we treat those who are ‘different’ from us, are profoundly important to our community and to the world,” says James W. Wright, Vancouver Opera’s general director, in a news release. The opera is composed by Neil Weisensel with libretto by spoken-word artist Shane Koyczan. For tickets call 604683-0222 or www.vancouveropera.ca.

Annual car run set for next Sunday S N OAW B I R D Tribute to The annual commemorative car run starts in Ladner Nov. 2.

ANNE MURRAY

Sweeping Tribute Honours Canada’s Sweetheart This multi-media show will take fans of Anne Murray back over four decades of hits and career highlights, including 24 Juno Awards and four Grammys. Fellow Nova Scotian Laura Gillespie and her amazing band deliver genuine reproductions of all the favourite hits, including “Snowbird”, “ Could I have this Dance”, “A Little Good News”, “You Needed Me”, “Daydream Believer” and many more.

The Old English Car Club’s annual London to Brighton Commemorative Run will use Ladner as its starting point. The event, set for Sunday, Nov. 2, begins at the Delta Town & Country Inn and will finish at the Fox and Fiddle on the Langley Bypass. Tony Cox, a member of the organizing committee, says he expects an “eclectic mix” of British cars to take 4

part. The weather plays a role in how many vehicles take part, he notes. A few years ago the event attracted around 80 cars with great weather, but last year’s event, which had poor weather, drew around 35. The local event commemorates the historic London to Brighton run in England, the longest running motoring event in the world, Cox says. That run celebrates the repeal of a law that basically limited motorized vehicles to four miles an

hour. Cox, who is the grand marshal for the local event, will have his 1962 MGA at the run. He’s had the car for about a decade and did a cross-Canada trip with it this year. Those interested in taking part in the run should arrive at the Delta Town & Country Inn before 10 a.m. on the day of the event. The club accepts a donation, which is passed on to a charity. Travelling on a ‘toy’ train in India

Railway line covers 26 kilometres from Metapullayam to Ooty BY

MARGARET DEEFHOLTS Optimist contributor

The dawn sky is flamingo pink as my cousins and I board a miniscule carriage at Metapullayamstation. Even at this early hour the platform is bustling with eager vacationers. The Nilgiri’s Blue Mountain Train is bound for the town of Coonoor in the Nilgiri Hills of South India. This is one of only two steam-powered train journeys in India, the other one being the Darjeeling Mountain Railway. From Coonoor the journey to Udagamandalam (formerly known as Ootacamund and popularly shortened to “Ooty”), is powered by diesel — a more prosaic locomotive than this coal-fired little Puffing Billy. The entire railway line from Metapullayam to Ooty covers 26 kilometres. The train

will negotiate 208 curves, 16 tunnels and cross 250 wooden trestle bridges along one of the steepest tracks in India, in just over four hours. We have been looking forward to this trip for months, as it completes a foursome of mountain railway journeys we’ve done together over the past couple of years. The little train jerks into life, pushed by a steam engine at the rear. A railway conductor perches on a platform in front of the train to check for obstacles — herds of wild elephants have been known to amble leisurely across the tracks. We have front centre views of the narrow gauge track as it winds sinuously through tropical forests and dense undergrowth. At this stage the terrain is relatively flat, so we move along quite briskly, but on the horizon the Nilgiri rang-

es lie against the sky like azure smudges, giving rise to their popular nickname, “Blue Mountains.” At Kallar station the train engages with a rack and

pinion rail that runs along the middle of the track. Then, as the climb begins in earnest, the little train clicks and clatters as it pants uphill at a maximum

speed of 13 km/h. The scenery changes to rugged gorges and silvery waterfalls plunging over jagged rocks. The train rides along the rim of canyons, and we gaze out at chiffon scarves of mist wreathing the summits of peaks. Wild flowers and feathery ferns line the route, and as we climb ever higher, we chug over several wooden trestle bridges across yawing chasms. This is thirsty work, and the locomotive is replenished with water at stations with very English names like Adderley, Hillgrove and Runneymede. At Hillgrove, passengers dismount to sip chai and click their cameras at vistas of the Nilgiri mountains folded range upon range, reaching skywards to heights of 9,000 feet or more. After Runneymede, the scenery gives way to rolling hills with tea bushes like

green knitted shawls flung across their slopes. Houses, painted bright primary colours of orange, green and purple dot the hillsides or stand tucked into treeshaded valleys. The air is fresh and cool now and the breeze carries the scent of pine and wild flowers. Like us, passengers don cardigans and toques. We dismount at Coonoor and bid farewell to our carriage companions who will be continuing on to Ooty. Over the next few days we explore our surroundings, including Coonoor’s Sim’s Park, the little village of Kotagiri, a Toda tribal village and the Thread Garden Museum. This week I answer a couple of questions from readers: Q. How do you trim back grape plants? I have lots of fruit now and the plant has grown so bushy. A. Grapevines should be pruned when they’re dormant and you can see what you’re doing. The simplest and most effective way of pruning grapes is to cut almost all the growth on your grapevine so you end up with one main trunk plus four branches on each. Each of your four branches should be as thick as a ballpoint pen and should be cut back to about 12 buds each. You should also leave four stubs pruned back to about two buds each. Each of those four stubs should emerge from the trunk at a point close to each of the branches. The idea is that your four branches will produce fruiting side branches that will give you grapes in the next fruiting season (2015). So what you end up with after you’ve pruned this fall/winter is one trunk, four side branches and four stubs.

Be prepared for a grapevine that looks like you tried to murder it as well as masses of green waste/compost. When you prune in the next fall or winter, the four stubs will have grown to a size suitable to become your four branches. Cut these back to 12 buds and also leave four stubs (cut to about two buds each) close to the four branches.

Grapes are a lot of work but very nice when they’re kept tidy by the yearly pruning. Otherwise they will try to eat your house. Grapes are a lot of work but very nice when they’re kept tidy by the yearly pruning. Otherwise they will try to eat your house. Q. I live 22 kilometres northeast of the town of Smoky Lake, Alberta. I have struggled for years with a veggie garden. Just when I think I have the soil nice and workable, we get a hot summer like this year, then it rains and the dirt turns to concrete. The dirt is what they call number two grey ash, about one foot deep, then it goes to sandy clay. I do have leaves and grass cuttings about three

feet deep I’ve been dumping in the same place for 20 years on the acreage. Would it help if I put it all in the garden and tilled it in? It’s a big job, but I could do it. Or is there a better way? My garden is 50 feet by 20 feet. A. There is no better way. Putting those leaves and clippings on the garden and tilling them in is the best way possible. Those grass clippings and leaves will have broken down into rich, black compost. More than anything else, compost holds moisture in soil and forms a nutritious easy-to-work garden. It’s so good that you saved these things over the years and have them all in one place. I suggest you begin by taking one foot depth of this material and till that in. That way it won’t be such a huge job and the compost will get mixed in better. The following year do another foot and the year after that the last foot. You might try choosing a different spot for the next pile of clippings so you can use the lower layers of the old spot before you start on the new pile. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Send them to her via amarrison@shaw.ca It helps me if you add the name of your city or region.

Delta Mayor Lois Jackson visited Delta Hospital last Wednesday to see some of the Delta Hospital Auxiliary volunteers in action. Jackson dropped in on the Pillow Pals volunteers during one of the group’s monthly work sessions. The Pillow Pals construct special comfort pillows designed to help women recovering from breast cancer surgery. The volunteers also make car seatbelt protectors for other surgical patients. Auxiliary member Elaine Canning said Jackson visited to see how the pillows are made and to thank the volunteers for their efforts. Last year, volunteers made more than 120 sets of comfort pillows.

Popular Red Nose service is in need of volunteers With only five weeks to the first night of Operation Red Nose, the safe driving service is putting out the call for volunteers. With the popularity of Operation Red Nose growing each year, the need for volunteers is also increasing. Last year, 450 volunteers ensured nearly 2,000 people got home safely over nine nights of the holiday season. Since 2002, Delta Gymnastics Society has been the local host of the award-winning national program that strives to keep the roads safe while at the same time supporting amateur youth sport in the community. “This year, we estimate we need 55 volunteers per night plus our headquarters team to keep up with the demand,” said Operation Red Nose coordinator Carlene Lewall. “We want to encourage our community to help us keep

our roads and families safe by supporting this program.” Volunteers have to be 19 years or over and are needed to fill many positions, including dispatch office, greeters, drivers and navigators. Jumping has benefits at any age

KRISTA POPOWYCH

Bouncing on a trampoline brings to mind kids laughing and having an awful lot of fun. Just this past week my son begged me to take him the giant indoor trampoline park — with the lofty goal of getting his dad to join him. Unfortunately, not many of us include jumping as part of our exercise routine. Most adults over the age of 40 are either starting to feel the effects of degenerative joint diseases or are worried they will get injured. But jumping is actually good

for us. Especially when it is done on forgiving surfaces such as those found on a trampoline or rebounder.

For years, the benefits of rebounding have been toted in a circle of committed bouncers. In the late 1970s, Albert E. Carter published a booklet that described the physiology of “reboundology” and coined and trademarked the word. As the father of rebounding, Carter took the lead in endorsing the benefits and science of rebounding, both first hand from his personal experiences and from feedback from others.

Jumping is definitely fun. There is something about bouncing that automatically boosts our endorphin levels and makes us feel better. You can’t help but smile. I have a fitness trampoline in my family room. I thought it would be a great way for my kids to burn off some energy and not jump on the furniture. Wishful thinking. Now they just jump from the rebounder onto the furniture and back again. But at least they are exercising and having fun at the same time I encourage you and your family members to get a jump on it too!

Once you have your rebounder, start slowly. You will be surprised at how quickly your heart rate goes up once you start bouncing. Initially intersperse easy bouncing with other movements such as walking on the spot, squats or simply stepping on and off of it. If you are apprehensive at all, make sure you hold the handlebar. Work towards 15-20 minutes of continuous bouncing.

Bouncing is very effective in activating the lymph system. The lymphatic system is often touted as the garbage dump for the body, where toxic wastes are disposed of.

Although the benefits of regular exercise are well documented and understood, not as regularly discussed is the lymphatic system and its important role.

Bouncing is particularly effective because every muscle is activated during the jumping motion and due to gravitational pressure. Some research claims that as little as five minutes of light bouncing is highly effective in gently easing waste out of the lymphatic system.

The eX-Train Youth Athlete Training Program features weekly 90-minute sessions, running Sunday evenings, from Nov. 2 to Dec. 14 at the South Delta Recreation Centre. A free information session for young athletes, parents and coaches will be taking place this Sunday (6:30-8 p.m.) at the recreation centre. increase their strength, flexibility, agility and speed. The program is geared toward enhancing individual body mechanics and is available for athletes between the ages of 13 to 18. “This is ideal for young athletes that could value from more diverse training but simply don’t have the time to make a full commitment to another sport,” explained Ann Lacey, Assistant Fitness Programmer at the Winskill Aquatic and Fitness Centre. The program will be overseen by Carl Ljungberg, who has 20 years experience as a personal trainer

and has been involved coaching soccer, lacrosse and football in South Delta. He specializes in designing workouts for people who need an efficient and effect program, and, most importantly, results.
