Tour de Delta on this weekend

There will be wheel-to-wheel action over three days this weekend as the 13th edition of the Tour de Delta hits town starting tonight. Cyclists will descend on the streets of Delta for a series of three races: the MK Delta Criterium on Friday in North Delta, the Brenco Criterium Saturday in Ladner and the White Spot | Delta Road Race on Sunday in Tsawwassen. Cyclists will be chasing a total prize purse of $25,000. This year marks a first for the Tour de Delta with international sanctioning, as well as a brand new course entirely

in Tsawwassen, for the road race. That recognition from the sport’s global governing body is expected to give the race its strongest field ever. The new start/finish location at Dennison Park lends itself to a fun, family environment, said race director Mark Ernsting, adding it can allow youth to see how professional teams are set up and other details about the race. The Tour de Delta kicks off B.C. Superweek (July 5 to 14), a collection of events around the Lower Mainland with a prize purse totaling $110,000 this year.

Delta fire chief Dan Copeland and Mayor Lois Jackson were all smiles Thursday morning as they checked out two new trucks for the department.

The Delta fire department this week showed off two new fire trucks that will enhance the department’s emergency response abilities. Ordered from a Nebraska manufacturer, Delta received a Wildland 2 quick response truck and a Ladder 6 aerial apparatus truck. Costing just under $1 million, the fully-equipped ladder truck will be stationed at the Annacis Island hall. Costing $350,000, the smaller Wildland 2 vehicle will initially be stationed at the Tsawwassen hall. The ladder truck is a replacement for a 15-year-old vehicle that was involved in a collision last September, forcing the fire department to write-off the vehicle. The new truck has a “state of the art” ladder that boasts a 105foot capability, able to reach large buildings, apartments and high-

rises. The truck also carries the latest in auto extraction tools and medical equipment. Fire chief Dan Copeland said he was particularly excited about receiving the Wildland 2, which carries 500 gallons of water. The four-wheel vehicle is the first of its kind in the province, specifically built to maneuver around some of the unique and challenging terrain in Delta. It was built to access areas like the dike, rural areas, Tsawwassen Beach and Burns Bog. It will carry equipment capable of fighting wildland fires and a portable extrication rescue tool for emergency work in rural areas. Deputy fire chief Ken Sim noted the municipality placed the order last year hoping to take delivery before the HST was officially scrapped April 1, 2013. The HST-exempt purchase saved the department about $75,000. Sim said many other departments were scrambling to place orders to upgrade their equipment before the HST was cancelled.

Piece of history to be torn down

Old Massey family home, built in early 1920s, in Ladner to make way for new housing development BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

A piece of Delta’s history will soon be torn down. Although it’s not on the municipal heritage register, there’s little doubt the old Massey family house on 47A Avenue in Ladner does have historical significance, but, like may other heritage structures in Delta, it’s going to make way for a new housing development. George Massey, perhaps Delta’s most important historical figure who spearheaded the construction of the underwater tunnel that now bears his name, moved his young family to the home in 1942. Built in the early 1920s and previously owned by a Captain William Cowley, the house was on 4870 Stanley Street, later renamed 47A Street. George Massey lived there with his wife Lila, raising children Doug and Doreen. In 1964 he passed away in the home, which was originally a one-storey bungalow before being converted to have a basement by the Masseys. It had several owners and many tenants since the Massey family sold it, but it’s still widely regarded as the Massey home by locals. Council recently approved a redevelopment application for the property, but asked the developer to put the house on the market for $1, in case someone is interested in purchasing and moving it. That’s something Doug Massey doubts will likely happen. He toured the property with his sister Doreen Kushnir for a final time this week. The property, once much larger and containing a

Doreen Kushnir and her brother Doug Massey have many fond memories of their childhood home on 47A Street. The house is to make way for a new housing development. robust vegetable and picturesque flower garden, is now overgrown and showing years of neglect. A sycamore tree that’s gown large will also be coming down. “It’s not his home of birth but it’s where his family grew up. It’s where he worked on the tunnel. If they wanted to commemorate the site with a plaque, that would be fine,” said Doug, a former city councilor and longtime community activist. Turning 80 next month, Doug said the area looked much different back in his days growing up there, but very little is left as a

reminder. He moved to the house when he was nine years old and attended Ladner Elementary. Walking through the empty house, Doug and Doreen spotted one of the few original features inside their dad’s old bedroom, a doorknob that Doug promptly removed as a souvenir for his sister. She took a few leaves off the sycamore tree. “There are a lot of good memories here,” she said. “My favourite was our family dinners, every Sunday no matter what. My dad loved salisbury steak

and our mum made lots of it every Sunday. Family dinners are a tradition we still have to this day,” Kushnir said. Now living in a condo just a block away from her childhood home, the 81year-old Kushnir, widow to the late Bill Kushnir, recalled the challenge of having to share of a bedroom with her brother before their dad built a stairway to the attic, where he built two bedrooms. As there was no second floor in the house, their rooms were in the peak of the roof where they could only stand up in the centre of their

rooms. Doreen recalled spending plenty of time up there during the huge flood of 1948. In his book, titled The Journey & Life of George Massey and Family. Doug recalled that to access the stairway, they would have to go through the dining room, past the only bedroom though their parents’ bedroom, as the living room was out of bounds and used only for special occasions. “This became very awkward later for my sister and me in our late teen years to access our bedrooms if we were to come home late. Sometimes I would sneak

though the living room, but the creaking stairs would always give us away,” he wrote. Massey in his book also described the view from his bedroom window, including the Ladner Pea Cannery, the Imperial bulk station and Chung Chuck’s potato field and house. Across the street today is an old warehouse building painted red, part of Chuck’s operation. Massey laughed that more than potatoes, including firecrackers and booze, were sold out of that building, which the Chuck family still owns today. He said Chung Chuck’s wife was often arrested and went to jail, taking the wrap for her husband’s activities. Dropping by the site while Doug and Doreen were still there reminiscing, developer Howard Smid said he didn’t think anyone would buy the house and move it. He noted Delta’s own bylaws makes it difficult to preserve heritage houses because older homes can’t be moved onto new residential lots. If older homes are moved, they usually find there way outside Delta to places like the Gulf Islands, he said. Donna Mueller, who moved into the house in the early 70s and resided there for a few years, told the Optimist she had discovered some old blueprints and model of the Deas Island Tunnel project in the basement. It was obviously George Massey’s, she said. Mueller, a member of the Delta Museum back then, donated the items to the local museum. Doug, noting there are no other tunnel plans in the house, contrary to some local reports, said the items later disappeared from the museum inventory.

Woman dies after being thrown from horse in Ladner Wednesday A woman died Wednesday night after being thrown from the horse she was riding in Ladner. The 43-year-old woman

and her 18-year-old daughter were riding in the 3600-block of 34 Street at around 8:40 p.m. when a dog spooked the mother’s horse, said Delta police

spokesperson Sgt. Ciaran Feenan. She was thrown off the animal as it galloped away. The daughter’s horse immediately followed and the girl was thrown off as

it attempted to jump a ditch. Nearby residents immediately began CPR on the mother before paramedics and emergency personnel arrived and took over.

She was transported to Vancouver General Hospital but later succumbed to her injuries, Feenan said. The daughter was taken to local hospital where she

was treated for her injuries, which included scrapes to her face and bruising to her left leg. The names of the victims have not been released.

Huntington reintroduces legislature to move province’s fixed election date to fall Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington this week reintroduced legislation to move B.C.’s fixed election date to the fall. The independent MLA said hopes to prevent future elections from interfering

with the budget process. “I am proposing a practical change to B.C.’s fixed election date that would prevent the budget from being misused and disrupted every four years as an electioneering tool,”

Huntington said. The proposal comes as MLAs are set to debate a 2014 budget, which is a resurrection of the budget introduced last fall - a budget that wasn’t subjected to legislative oversight

because of the May election, Huntington said. The Fall Fixed Election Amendment Act was previously introduced by former MLA Bob Simpson as part of a six-piece Democratic Reform Agenda issued by

three independent MLAs last February. “Currently, pre-election budgets are never debated in the Legislature and amount to little more than a glimmer in the eye of the Finance Minister. This

contributes to public skepticism and the perception that election-year budgets exist only for campaign purposes,” Huntington said. “British Columbians have lost confidence in pre-election budgets.”

Report outlines council expenses BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Mayor Lois Jackson lead the way in salary and expenses on Delta council last year, while Jeannie Kanakos wracked up the highest total among the councillors. The municipality last week released council’s remuneration and expense report for 2012, a requirement under the Community Charter outlining what the mayor and each councillor earned in base pay, as well as their car allowance, benefits and total expenses related to their duties in office. The report, on council’s agenda last Monday but not discussed, show that Jackson made $110,460 in remuneration and had $16,728 in car allowance, for a total remuneration of $127,188. On top of that, she also accumulated $1,513 in benefits. She had $6,610 in council-related expenses, which includes the cost of trips to conferences, and

another $1,578 in expenses in her role as police board chair. Meanwhile, all the councillors last year made $49,294 in remuneration and were paid out $10,368 in car allowance, for a total remuneration of $59,662. Once again, that doesn’t include benefits and expenses. Kanakos, according to the report, was given $1,863 in benefit payments while registering $8,951 in expenses. That combined total of $10,814 in expenses and benefits was the highest among her councillor colleagues. While Kanakos had the highest amount paid out in benefits, Scott Hamilton had the highest in expenses at $9,434, although he was only paid out $335 in benefits. The next highest payout in expenses, after Hamilton and Kanakos, went to Ian Paton, who had $8,019 in that category, although he also only had just $335 in benefit payouts. When it comes to how

mayor and six councillors. “It is normal practice for municipalities with a population of over 50,000 to employ eight councillors,” the report stated. “Employing the lesser number of council members in Delta translates into additional workload per individual as work items such as council committees need to be distributed amongst fewer members.” Meanwhile, as far as the current council configuration, they will essentially be down a body until the November 2014 civic election with Scott Hamilton being granted an unpaid leave. Hamilton, who became an MLA after winning the riding of Delta North for the Liberals in last month’s provincial election, was recently granted a leave until mid next January. After that, he’ll officially step down from council. It’s a move designed to avoid a costly by-election because by the time he officially resigns it will be close enough to the next election.

much municipal politicians earn, it’s seemingly always a controversial topic, especially in Delta where sharp increases occurred over the last few years. Jackson’s salary in 2006, for example, was set at $82,692, while councillors at the time earned $31,446. Council voted to give themselves a number of raises since then, the latest occurring last year. For a number of years, the salaries for Delta’s civic politicians have been based on the average of four Lower Mainland municipalities with similar populations — Coquitlam, Richmond, Township of Langley and District of North Vancouver. The remuneration rate in 2012 had fallen below the average, so the new raise was calculated, seeing the mayor’s base pay go up six per cent and councillors by eight per cent. A report from finance staff at the time pointed out Delta is the largest municipality in the province that continues to employ a

What is the activity? Playing in the pool with his daughter. Where and when does this take place? Ladner Leisure Centre. How often do you participate? Twice a week.

Delta police nabbed a few impaired drivers over the Canada Day long weekend as the department kicked off its summer Counter Attack campaign. Over the three-day holiday weekend, officers assessed more than 700 drivers. Out of that, 10 were

asked to take a roadside breath test with six passing, one registered a warn and three registered a fail. In total, officers issued one three-day driving suspension and three 90-day driving suspensions. There were nine violation tickets issued and officers also discovered one person driving while suspended. The Counter Attack program will continue through-

How long have you been involved with this activity? Mark has been coming to the pool since it opened, nearly 30 years ago. Why did you get involved with this activity? The pool is big, clean and fun. Also it helps tire out his daughter so she naps better after playing in the pool. What do you like best about this activity? The beach entry and the warmth of the Leisure Pool. How does it benefit your life? Playing in the pool provides healthy exercise for both Mark and his daughter. It allows his daughter to interact with other children. What other things do you do to keep active? Gymnastics and running. Did you know that ParticipACTION recently launched a campaign called ‘Bring Back Play’? It encourages parents to increase their children’s physical activity levels by bringing back the fun games and unstructured active play that used to be a part of every childhood. Play allows youth of all ages to try new things, test boundaries and use their imaginations. Summer is a great time to get out and play with your children! The Outdoor Pools are now open, and offer free public admission from 12-5pm on weekends and statutory holidays. Water Play Parks are in operation from 10am-7pm daily until the Labour Day long weekend. Another way to spend quality family time is to check out the events being held over the summer. The Tour de Delta, Boundary Bay Airshow, Delta Police Pipe Band & March Hare Band Concert, Concerts in the Park, Outdoor Movie Nights, Tsawwassen Sun Festival and North Delta Show & Shine will all offer plenty of fun for children and adults alike. For further details on scheduled events, and ideas for all the ways you can play this summer, go to www.delta.ca or call (604) 952-3000.

out the summer with officers setting up road blocks at various locations around the community. “The Delta police believe road safety is a priority all year round, not merely a seasonal event,” said department spokesperson Sgt. Ciaran Feenan. “Officers and volunteers conduct various initiatives throughout the year, including commercial

vehicle inspections, speed, aggressive driving and seatbelt enforcement. These initiatives are carried out for enforcement and educational purposes in an effort to reduce the carnage on our highways.” Police are also reminding the public to never get into a vehicle if the driver is not sober and to pre-plan your transportation when heading out for the evening.

Ladner lost a long-time resident and selfless volunteer in George Koka, 73, last week. He passed away on June 27 due to complications from a surgery. One of the places Koka gave back was the Ladner branch of the Royal Canadian Legion as a member for over three decades and on the executive for about 15 years. “This Legion, and this town, is going to be devastated without him. Without a doubt,” said branch manager Jacky Hillairet. Koka ran the Legion’s meat draw for 30 years, organized golf tournaments, ran the beer garden at the annual May Days fair for close to 20 years and also played a big role in the branch supporting Variety The Children’s Charity and the Delta Hospital Foundation. He also did many “little things,” Hillairet noted. “We’ve got to revamp everything to get people to step up because of the little things George did and

didn’t tell anybody – he just did it,” she said. That’s just the kind of guy he was, said Koka’s son Craig. “If he saw a job that had to be done, he’d just go do it,” he said. Koka’s daughter Kerry described him as “totally selfless” and “un-replaceable.” Koka was also a longtime force behind the Deltassist Christmas hamper program, rounding up food and organizing the sorting and distribution of the hampers to less fortunate families around Delta. “I just like helping out. Why not? Somebody’s got to do it,” he told the Optimist in 2005, talking about the hamper program. Koka, a three-time cancer survivor, was also heavily involved in amateur sports in Delta, working as an umpire, coaching boys and girls baseball as well as boys soccer. He started with the Ladner Minor Baseball Association in the early 1970s and later served over a decade as president Ladner Men’s Fastball League.

Fire danger rating level rises

After hot, dry long weekend status shifts from low to moderate in Delta The summer weather has arrived, and with it the fire danger rating is on the rise. On Tuesday, after a hot, dry long weekend, Delta’s fire danger rating was moved from low to moderate. This means that there is now a ban on open air burning and smoking in Delta parks. The ban is in effect for all areas of the municipality and prohibits campfires and open cooking using briquettes and propane barbecues in all Delta parks until further notice. An outdoor burning ban was implemented last week. As of June 24, all burning

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW There’s something to be said for issues hitting close to home. We recently published a letter from a Tsawwassenite who essentially suggested that an earlier letter writer from Ladner concern herself with what’s going on in her own community and leave Tsawwassen, and particularly the Southlands, well enough alone. He’s subsequently caught some grief for that sentiment, and while it’s true that everyone should have a right to express their own opinion, I think there’s some validity in the notion that those closest to an issue have the most to either lose or gain. I live in Ladner and will fully admit that whatever happens on the Southlands will have very little direct bearing on my quality of life. That doesn’t mean I’m not entitled to an opinion — and when you’ve got to write 104 columns a year you’re always looking for something to comment on! — but I acknowledge that I’m unlikely to be significantly affected, either positively or negatively, by anything that transpires on that property. Those living in proximity to everyone’s favourite piece of real estate, however, will feel any impacts, again, both positively and negatively, to a much greater degree, so I don’t see the harm in giving their opinions greater weight. I recognize there’s a danger in suggesting someone’s viewpoint is more important than someone else’s, but I believe we’ve already set that precedent as I don’t think the public or politicians put as much stock when people from outside Delta take it upon themselves to tell us what we should be doing. And that happens for a reason: The farther away you are from something, the less it matters. Have I been impacted by Sunstone, the 800-unit development off Nordel Way in North Delta? Not that I can tell, and if it was going to happen, I suspect I would have felt it by now given people began occupying homes there back in 2009. I doubt I’m alone in being oblivious to the effects of the large-scale project in another part of the municipality. The Southlands, obviously, is closer to home, but for the most part it’s still very much a Tsawwassen matter. The proposed development, if approved, would add more cars to the tunnel line up and offer greater housing choices, both of which extend beyond Tsawwassen, but most of the other issues at play are far more localized. As a result, I don’t mind Tsawwassenites being given a greater say. Then again, maybe I’ve just become accustomed to having my opinions ignored!

Chung Chuck held true to his beliefs throughout his life DOUG HUSBAND

COMMUNITY COMMENT Chung Chuck died of old age on Dec. 8, 1986 and his name still resonates with old timers locally and with the legal fraternity. Some locals thought Chung an “irascible character” while his lawyers felt he had a very strong natural sense of justice evident when he believed anybody in authority was exceeding its legal limits. Chung garnered much media attention in his legal battles with the B.C. vegetable marketing board and the Corporation Of Delta, which spanned decades. Attempts to control his potato business or other business interests were met with hostility and confrontation. The marketing board, via legislation aided and abetted by local farmers, attempted to stop Chung from transporting and selling produce. Numerous charges and counter charges resulted. In 1977 Chung denied Delta’s

engineering department access to his property for the purpose of shutting off municipal water. Staff believed Chung was supplying water to nine illegal houseboats. This discussion escalated with an outraged Chung brandishing a shotgun. Delta’s police department attended, as did Chung’s lawyer, and over several hours a temporary truce was negotiated. This standoff resulted in a frenzy of media coverage. Ensuing charges laid against Chung were dismissed as Delta failed to convince the judge that Chung was given proper notice or the shotgun brandished by Chung was loaded, which disappeared before trial. Chung was represented by a senior defence lawyer who went on to a distinguished career as a supreme and appeals court judge. It is reported Chung retained as many as 70 lawyers during this tumultuous period. Chung also found time to participate in Chinese farm and patriotic associations as well as the Red Cross and Salvation Army. Perhaps tiring of confrontation, he twice ran, albeit not successfully, as a candidate for reeve of Delta in the 1950s and for the presidency of the B.C. Vegetable Marketing

Board. In later years Chung was reportedly a wealthy man with his land holdings, potato business, retail stores and restaurants. A noted Vancouver artist solicited the opportunity to formally paint Chung. The portrait was profiled in many exhibitions across Canada and as far away as London, England. CBC produced a television documentary on his life titled Chung Chuck, Vancouver’s fighting farmer. He has been inducted into the Metropolitan Vancouver Hall Of Fame based on his accomplishments and contributions to Lower Mainland history. Chung’s life, marked by controversy and unconventional by some standards, held true to his beliefs of liberty and his rights under the law. He successfully challenged legislation to the highest court in Canada. A self-made man by any standards, Chung’s passing was celebrated by many. A warm eulogy was delivered by one of several lawyers in attendance. Chung’s statement “I grow potato, I sell potato” lives on. Chung Chuck’s family remain active in business and service in the village of Ladner. And a good night to you, the family of Chung Chuck.

July 5, 2013 The Delta Optimist A9 Letters to the Editor

Others can express view

Editor: Re: Concern yourself with Ladner issues, letter to the editor, June 26 I, too, am from Ladner, and I strongly disagree with the opinion expressed in Peter White’s letter that the fate of Southlands is an issue only for Tsawwassen residents. That is a very naive understanding, in a disrespectful letter, and demonstrates elevated selfishness and arrogance. This kind of opinion regarding this land use issue has cost all Delta residents annual tax revenues that would have flowed to the Corporation of Delta in the millions

of dollars for many years. That being the difference between mixed residential and agricultural tax rates. And this during a period when the rate of growth of expenditures by the Corporation of Delta has consistently exceeded the rate of inflation, so our taxes ballooned. In the past Delta has been offered an excellent opportunity to own a revenue-generating golf course, along with extensive real estate taxes, plus many other expensive benefits from that land, but the same kind of selfishness was used to pressure politicians from accepting it for all of

us. Now the land owner has been squeezed into offering a weird mixture of ownership and land uses, including an urban agricultural experiment that will cost huge amounts of public money to organize and manage (think big bureaucracy) without a hope of ever being economically successful. It’s all in the name of maintaining a pastoral view for a privileged few at the expense of all Delta residents. This attitude is certainly a poor approach to building a vibrant and viable community. Tom Griffing

Thankful for return of lost purse Editor: Can you find a small corner in your paper to say “thank you so much” to a person (or persons) unknown to me for turning

in my favourite red purse at the Safeway in Tsawwassen. I thought it had been stolen at a bus stop. It gives one hope, faith and a ray of sunshine

to know that there are still good honest citizens around. Thanks also go to Delta police for their help and advice. Sybil Barrett

Everyone needs housing On World Refugee Day (June 20) I was reading the local news around development and housing in South Delta. Most of the debate centres on “not in my backyard.” Thankfully, other voices in favour of housing for the young, first time buyers or seniors are getting press time. We have lost the ability to have civil constructive conversation around the common good. Squeaky wheels get grease, stereotyped evil developers are fun to vilify and angry homeowners make good news. Those who favour thoughtful development do not write letters or attend meetings. Asking a few people why they did not voice their support, they spoke in hushed tones about needing to live with their angry neighbours or customers. In other parts of the Lower

Mainland, densification and housing alternatives have created vibrant and exciting communities. There are 43.7 million refugees and internally displaced people due to violence and war in the world. Every one of those would give anything to live in a laneway home, a refurbished sea container, a downstairs suite no matter how small, little own a condo, apartment or townhouse. What does all of this have to do with God or religion? Nothing you might say. We speak and act as if that is not so. Yet we know — whether you are a Christian or follow another world religion — that all express some variant of the Golden Rule — a primary concern for one’s neighbour. Surely the housing of my neighbour is worthy of the same concern as my own. I believe Jesus would agree.

Milestone books launch in Ladner Tim Bowling, originally from Ladner, kick-started a notable career when he launched his first poetry collection, Low Water Slack, at the Ladner Pioneer Library in December 1995. Now, eighteen years later, he has published ten collections of poetry, two books of nonfiction, four novels, and has won both national and international awards for his work. Bowling celebrates 20 years of writing with his latest collection, Selected Poems, which will fittingly be launched at the Ladner Pioneer Library on Thursday, July 11 at 7 p.m. In Selected Poems, Bowling has gathered together his finest poems.

Always a poet of intense emotion and surprising metaphor whose lyric-narrative voice ranges in tone from romantic to humorous to coldly tragic and dark, Bowling’s integrity has never wavered, nor has his commitment to celebrating poetic tradition and his love of the natural world. Many of the poems in the volume have won significant honours, both in and outside Canada. Also launching her book that same night will be Theresa Shea, who will read from her debut novel The Unfinished Child. Her book follows protagonist Marie MacPherson, a mother of two, who finds

herself unexpectedly pregnant at 39. Marie’s situation is further complicated when she becomes convinced something is wrong with her baby. She then enters the world of genetic testing and is entirely unprepared for the decision that lies ahead. Intertwined throughout the novel is the story of Margaret, who gave birth to a daughter with Down syndrome in 1947, when such infants were defined as “unfinished” children. As the novel shifts back and forth through the decades, the lives of the women converge, and the story speeds to an unexpected conclusion. Shea has published poetry,

fiction, essays, reviews, and articles in a number of Canadian magazines and journals. Born in Maryland and raised throughout the United States, she moved to Canada in 1977. Shea and Bowling currently live in Edmonton with their three children. This event is made possible with the support of the Fraser Valley Regional Library and the Canada Council of the Arts. Admission is free and everyone is welcome. The Ladner Pioneer Library is located at 4683 51st St. For more information about the book launch, please phone 604-946-6215.

The steeps of Lake Louise

Lace up the hiking boots, fill the water bottle and hit the trail JANE CASSIE

Optimist contributor

The majestic Rockies lovingly embrace Lake Louise. Steeped with height and beauty, they tower above the quaint village, cocoon our cozy campground and set the scenic stage for our hikes in Banff National Park. After a short 25 kilometres (16 miles) drive from our last stop at Yoho National, we’ve been able to de-hitch our home, lace up our boots and hit the trail. “Check the sign, Babe,” Brent says, at the Eiffel Lake trailhead. Plastered next to bold text is a mug shot of a mean-looking grizzly. My bear bells suddenly take on a staccato beat. I glance at the holster can of bear spray attached to my husband’s belt. I just hope he can use it like a six-shooter if the need arises. “It says, by law, we have to hike in groups of four or

more beyond this point.” I read aloud. “Do you think the four extra paws we’ve brought along will suffice?” Although Kalli, our year-old Schnauzer is a great hiking hound, she clearly doesn’t meet these requirements. Fortunately, Karen and Dave, a couple from Invermere do. And after leaving the aqua-green Moraine Lake behind, we chat while ascending together up ten switchbacks and 320m (1,000 feet). There’s a fork at the switchback’s summit, and while our new-found hiking buddies head to Sentinel Pass, we tag along with others going to Eiffel Lake. Within minutes we’re out of the trees, traversing a sunny slope that’s overlooking the Valley of Ten Peaks. Tiny Moraine Lake is now far below and rising from its silty shores are 10,000 foot-high mounds that loom over the predominant Wenkchemna Glacier. Some have steep crevices

doused with avalanched snowfields. Many are striated and etched after eons of weathering. All are stunning. Even our leashed trailblazer is impressed. With her nose to the ground stone, our pup leads the way — across open meadows fringed with golden larch, over sketchy sections of rubble and rock. Plowing through snowdrifts, sniffing at wildflowers, alert to nearby critters; ground

squirrels in the woodlands, mellow marmots in the subalpine and rock rabbits who screech from their stony alpine homes. The trail continues beyond for heartier hikers — another four kilometers of trekking into the high alpine and they’ll meet the Continental Divide. We, on the other hand, decide to retrace our steps. And while sauntering back over the view-boasting slope our group number diminishes.

Some have fallen back, others have moved ahead. By the time we reach the switchback junction there’s just the three of us (and that’s counting our canine). I think about the pack rule and wonder if our pup will dub as a bear protector. “Do you want to join our group,” the fit-looking German asks. “We’re heading up to Sentinel Pass.” Although my feet have endured more natural step classes this past week than I thought possible, it is our last day at Lake Louise. And it’s only three kilometres to this popular spot. How hard can it be? Sunlight glints off the golden stands that border our Larch Valley trail and the ten mammoth peaks that we had recently zoomed in on now beautify the backdrop. We gradually ascend to a lake-dotted meadow and soaring to the heavens, just beyond, is an uphill climb that will truly test my previous words. Razor

Z-sharp switchbacks etch the steep pitch and from this lower viewpoint we can make out an ant-size human chain. Although dubious of my footing and balance, I have my trusty poles and pup to propel me along. Breath, then step. Don’t look down. While repeating this mind-calming mantra and tethered to Kalli I eventually make the grade to this highest hiking pass in the Rockies. From the wind-blown 12,000-foot apex, I’m breathless. And whether it’s from the thin air or wowing vista, there are two things I can be sure of. Thanks to the steady stream of hikers on this trail, my husband’s six-shooter skills won’t be necessary. And because of the four extra paws we’ve brought along, I’m assured of getting help back to sea level. Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent travel article syndicate. Delta Islanders Sahawna Baker looks for an open teammate during B.C. Intermediate “A” Lacrosse League action against the Victoria Shamrocks. Delta’s next home game is July 12 when Richmond visits Ladner at 8 p.m.

Tsawwassen’s Brendan Hodge has been named to the Canadian rowing team that will be competing at the upcoming 2013 Samsung World Rowing Cup in Lucerne, Switzerland. Hodge spent his junior years in the powerhouse Brentwood College high school program before attending Harvard University. He returned to competitive rowing after a five year hiatus and is a member of Canada’s men’s lightweight sweep group. Following a competition in Amsterdam, the Canadian team has two weeks to train and finalize its crews for the World Cup, slated for July 12-14. “It’s exciting as it is the first team event for this quadrennial,” said Rowing Canada Aviron High Performance Director, Peter Cookson. “The expectation is this will be a learning experience for the athletes and coaches, as we move forward and develop crews for this year’s World Championships in Korea in late August.”

Markus Thormeyer joined the Victoria Academy of Swimming (VAS) for their Southern California competition tour. Thormeyer posted the fastest 200 metre backstroke for the 16 and under age group in the country and second fastest for U18 this year. Thormeyer trained and competed for 11 days with the VAS Olympians – including London Summer Games silver medalist Ryan Cochrane – under Canadian Olympic Swimming head coach Randy Bennett, with full access to their senior team support staff. Great Golf - Great People - Great Value! Jim Sarkissian has been a Full Play member of Beach Grove Golf Club for the past 3 years. We asked Jim to share with us some of the benePts and reasons for of being a member. Why did you join? As my children got older I found that I had pockets of time where I could get out and play more golf. In the past I played at the different public courses. I enjoyed the golf courses but I often wondered what it would be like playing at a private club with the same bunch of guys. About the same time my then 11 year old son Matt expressed an interest in playing which really helped to seal the deal at home. Of course it didn’t hurt that I had a number of Air Canada pilot acquaintances at the Club. Why Beach Grove? At the time I joined the value proposition at Beach Grove was exceptional especially when you compared it to like facilities in the Lower Mainland. I had played in the Beach Grove Amateur Championship so I knew that the Club ran professional tournament competitions and I loved the Clubhouse and the people that I had met while I played as a guest. The clincher was the Junior program that the Club ran. It was Prst class and the staff in the shop really respected the kids and their needs. Head Professional Brent Derrheim was easy to talk to and he seemed genuinely interested in welcoming new members to their community. My Prst couple of years I played as an Associate member but quickly found a circle of players to enjoy the game with as a Full Play member. How do you use the Club? I play 3 to 4 times per week with a number of different groups. Beach Grove is great because most everyone you play with welcomes you into their group. I love the pace of play in the morning so I often try to get out as early as possible. I practice a bit so having the driving range is a real bonus. I am completing my second year as the Chairman of the Beach Grove Amateur Championship held in August each year and really love the volunteer involvement and being a part of a team that gives back to the Community of Tsawwassen. All three of my brothers come to the Club to compete in the Amateur which is both fun and a bit stressful!! My son Matt plays the game and my wife Pam is starting to show an interest as well. I hope that as time goes on I can get out more with Pam and Matt in addition to staying active in the Men’s Group.

Team Canada ready for White Spot Road Race

Nats brings plenty of experience to Tsawwassen course Team Canada’s roster for the Tour de Delta’s White Spot Road Race on Sunday includes five riders who have collectively competed in the Olympic Games, UCI World Championships, Giro d’Italia, Vuelta d’Espana and the Tour de Suisse in addition to countless National Championships. Zach Bell, Christian Meier, Will Routley, Nic Hamilton and Nigel Ellsay are members of the Cycling Canada National Road or Track Team at the Tier 1, 2 or 3 level. Bell is the 2013 Canadian Elite Men’s National Road Race champion and also represented Canada at the 2008 and 2012 Summer Olympics, finishing seventh in Beijing in the men’s points race and 12th in the men’s madison. He was eighth in the men’s omnium in London last summer. He is ecstatic about coming back to the Lower Mainland, a region where he’s had a lot of success over the years, including here in Delta. “BC Superweek was the first set of races where I was able to show some signs of ability on the bike,” said Bell. “This year I’m excited to make a return where the calibre of riders should be the highest it’s ever been. “To wear the maple leaf in a set of races that has formed such a foundation for my career is an amazing honour.” Meier was part of the National Team just two weeks ago at the Tour de Beauce where it ended up with a stage win and third overall finish.

“I am very excited to be able to race the Tour of Delta this year as part of the National Team. We had a good showing at the Tour de Beauce a couple weeks back and with the team we have racing at the Tour de Delta I think we are on track for another successful race,” said Meier. “We have a diverse roster which should be able to tackle most all situations during the race.” Meier is a member of the ORICAGreenEDGE team out of Australia. The 28-year-old finished first in both the Sprints classification and Special sprints classification at the 2013 Volta a Catalunya in March and has raced in the Giro d’Italia this year and last. He was also first in the road race at the 2012 Tour de White Rock. Routley is in the midst of a third season racing professionally in Europe and he can’t wait tto compete in BC Superweek — especially with the changes to the Tour de Delta. “To see the Tour of Delta grow into a UCI (sanctioned) race this year is very exciting,” Routley proclaimed. “I’m really happy to be able to take part in the inaugural edition as a part of Team Canada, and look forward to seeing the maple leaf on the podium.” The men’s 151-kilometre White Spot Road Race takes place through the streets of Tsawwassen and gets underway at 9 a.m. It starts and finishes at Dennison Park.
