Dr. Jarso Jallah Saygbe - Associate Vice President (AVP) As we approach the end of the semester and eagerly anticipate the rest and respite of winter break, the Office of Student Success acknowledges and celebrates your dedication to supporting and guiding our scholars throughout the semester. It has been such a joy traveling together through this memorable and, at times, challenging year. We cannot thank you enough for your constant support of your students. We cannot be successful without you cheering them on, believing in them, and serving as advocates.

Additionally, we acknowledge the critical role our administration, faculty, and staff play in ensuring and providing high-quality instruction in a safe and nurturing environment, where our scholars can learn and thrive as they navigate their educational journey to becoming careerready. This evidently reflects a vibrant DSU community that is deeply committed to student success.

End of Semester Reminders Final Exam Week: December 11 - 15 (Monday - Friday) Students should locate and review their final exam schedule.

Final exams don’t always occur in the same place, time, and day as the class.

Director's Corner: Counseling Services Dr. Mark Parisi & Dr. Michael Monk, LPCMH, NCC Life as a student is rewarding, but it can also come with challenges. Student Counseling Services is here to help. Under the leadership of Associate Vice President, Dr. Michele Fisher, Campus Health Services is designed to help students meet their personal, social, and academic needs. A part of managing your health is to be mindful of your mental wellness. DSU supports students’ mental health through the Counseling Center. Challenges with work/life/school balance, academic struggles, family and relationship difficulties, and financial worries, can negatively impact students’ academic performance and mental health. Talking to someone who can help is worthwhile. This is why the counseling center is here to provide students with the help they need to achieve their goals. Counselors are involved in helping students explore their needs, feelings, interpersonal relationships, and life goals. All registered students have access to the Counseling Center’s services which includes individual and group counseling, crisis intervention, and workshops on personal development and mental health topics. Counseling sessions are offered in person at the center or through telehealth. The Counseling Center works with students to help eliminate any mental health barriers to their academic success.

Counseling Services is led by Dr. Mark Parisi, Executive Director, and Dr. Michael Monk, Director, and offers confidential and free mental health support to all enrolled students.

Dr. Mark L. Parisi earned his Ph.D. in counseling psychology from the University at Albany and is licensed as a psychologist in New York and Delaware. He has a master of education degree in counseling and human services from Lehigh University, a master of arts degree in linguistics from the University of Pennsylvania, and a bachelor of arts degree in Japanese studies and linguistics from Bucknell University.

Dr. Michael Monk, LPCMH, NCC, holds Mark L. Parisi, PhD. Michael Monk, PhD, a Doctor of Philosophy degree in LPCMH, NCC Executive Director of Director of Counseling counseling supervision from Neumann Counseling Services University in Pennsylvania. He is a National Certified Counselor and a licensed professional counselor of mental health in Delaware. His master of education degree is in counseling from the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico.

Student Wellness Tips Whether it is midterms or finals, the Office of Student Success (OSS) knows that exams can be stressful. To help manage stress, these tips are provided for students to aid in the process.

What is stress? There are two kinds of stress: eustress (natural stress) and distress (long-lasting).

Natural stress, eustress, is needed to keep us alert, and motivated, and help solve problems.

However, long-lasting stress (distress) can cause physical and psychological side effects such as gastrointestinal problems, depression, headaches, insomnia, heart disease, and bad habits, such as drinking, smoking, overeating, and drug use.

Tools to help manage stress Relaxation Techniques - Try meditation and yoga.

Practice Acceptance- don’t stress over things you cannot change.

Rational Self-Talk- Set realistic goals and reduce procrastination.

Get organized - using a planner will help you manage your time, create a daily to-do list.

Exercise- physical activity reduces the stress hormone cortisol.

Physical fitness has benefits that extend beyond improved health. To help students work on their physical fitness, DSU offers the Wellness and Recreation Center (WRC). Students can participate in group fitness, personal training, intramurals, sports clubs, aquatics, and special events. Students can contact the WRC by emailing wrc@desu.edu or calling 302-857-7702. Reduce Time Urgency- take things slow, be sure to pace yourself, and allow yourself ample time for tasks.

Disarm Yourself- let go of competitiveness, and avoid the blame game.

Quiet- set time aside for yourself to unwind.

Set Good Habits- avoid smoking as it restricts blood circulation and affects the stress response, avoid excessive caffeine intake as caffeine increases nervousness, and eat a proper diet and number of meals.

Socialize- laughter dispels stress, and speak with your trusted friends and family about your concerns or feelings.

Celine Trombi - Sophomore, Hospitality & Tourism Management Major | Townsend, DE One thing I can tell you about succeeding in college is that it is not as simple as getting a degree and graduating. My success at Delaware State University (DSU) has been and will continue to be defined by the steps that I take to build a support network, involve myself in organizations focused on advancing my future career, and giving back to my local community.

The first step I took toward success was joining the Honors Program. As a new student to the program, I was prepared to participate in a more rigorous and focused curriculum that holds its students to a higher standard with classes that provide more depth and insight into the subjects being taught. What I didn’t expect, was to also be provided with the resources and support that I needed to gain quality experiences both in and outside of the classroom. It was also unexpected that maintaining a connection with the supportive staff behind the Honors Program would lead to acquiring my first on-campus job as a student worker under the Office of Undergraduate Research Experiential Learning and Honors (URELAH).

Leadership was my next venture at DSU. When the opportunity to be on the Freshman class board presented itself, I saw it as a chance to grow a presence at DSU. Freshman election season came and ended with Celine Trombi proudly serving as the Freshman Class Treasurer. I also joined the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality (NSMH). NSMH is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping students who are interested in pursuing a career in hospitality by providing resources, networking opportunities, and a supportive environment.

In addition to being a student worker for URELAH, I am also a Supplemental Instructor Leader for Introduction to General Psychology with Integrated Academic Support Services (IASS). This leadership role is spent providing further assistance to students taking the course by reinforcing difficult concepts from the lectures they attend. Also, I have taken membership in more campus organizations including Hornets in Motion, Only the Hornets, and the DSU Chapter of NAACP. Through these organizations, I will be able to immerse myself in the local DSU and Dover community, make connections with Alumni to grow my network, and learn what actions I can take to advance the black community.

EAB's Navigate: Micro Support Site Goes Live Debuted this Fall 2023 - The Office of Student Success aims to continually provide students, staff, and faculty with all the support needed to utilize Navigate. The microsite includes directions, videos, and frequently asked questions to access Navigate and support your students' journeys.

Click here to access the Navigate Support Microsite - https://www.desu.edu/navigate Navigate streamlines the case notes, referral, and resource processes for the OSS team while providing students with a platform to schedule tutoring, advising, and other related services.

Navigate allows faculty and staff to act collaboratively as a care team for students, monitoring their academic progress, professional needs, and personal concerns.

Navigate also includes an app feature, which keeps students connected to OSS resources on the go. The Navigate app can be accessed on your various app stores, the Apple store or Google Play store, or directly in the DSU HUB app.

EAB Navigate: Academic Planner has Launched OSS is excited to announce a new tool for students. The Academic Planner tool in EAB Navigate provides students with tools to plan and monitor their degree progress from matriculation to graduation, providing a clear path to degree completion.

The academic planner allows students to get a jump start on their registration planning for future semesters. Using the tool, students can generate a plan to share with their advisor with a few simple clicks. Students can access the academic planning feature by logging in to https://desu.navigate.eab.com/ with their DSU credentials. Is your student looking for more information on EAB or the planning tool? They can contact their academic advisor directly for assistance or reference the EAB Planning tool update email that was sent to their student email account.

Staff Highlights Please join the OSS team in celebrating our recent staff accomplishments.

DSU Celebrates Customer Service Week Delaware State University continues its dedication to providing stellar customer service through its Customer Service Center of Excellence (CSCOE), led by Ms. Annette Turlington. During Customer Service Week, the CSCOE celebrated by sharing testimonials from staff and faculty expressing how they strive to deliver customer service to both internal and external DSU customers on a daily basis. The Office of Student Success’s (OSS) very own Mr. Franck Yehiri (academic advisor and adjunct faculty member) was featured in the testimonial. Delaware ACE Women’s Network (DAWN) Rising Star Ms. Tamecka Faria-Frisby, Advisement Director in the Office of Student Success was awarded the Delaware ACE Women’s Network 2023 DAWN Rising Star Award.

The DAWN Rising Star Award is presented annually to one outstanding woman in each higher education institution in Delaware whose potential to achieve is evident.

Upcoming Presentation - 2024 ACTP Conference Ms. Anna Cortese, Director of Integrated Academic Support Services (IASS) proposal titled “How to Navigate a Tutorial Session: the Beginning, the Middle, the End, … and Beyond”, was accepted for the 2024 Association for the Coaching & Tutoring Profession (ACTP) Conference to be held March 17th - 20th, 2024 in Charlotte, NC.

Honors Induction & Graduation Ceremony On Thursday, October 5th, 2023 the Office of Undergraduate Research, Experiential Learning, and Honors (URELAH) held its Annual Induction and graduation Ceremony for the first time in person since the start of the COVID pandemic. The ceremony was hosted by URELAH’s Executive Director, Dr. Shonda Poe. The Honors Program at Delaware State University was established in the early 1970s as an academic and cultural enrichment program for students with demonstrated exceptional ability and those with potential for academic excellence.

The mission of the Honors Program at Delaware State University is to provide students with exceptional intellectual ability, motivation, and commitment with superior learning opportunities that challenge them to reach new levels of academic excellence in scholarship and creativity.

Tutor Appreciation Week Celebrated The first week of October is recognized as “Tutor Appreciation Week”. Here at Delaware State University, Integrated Academic Support Services (IASS) makes it a point to celebrate our tutors and SI leaders to give recognition where it is deserved during this special week. This year, IASS dedicated a board in William C. Jason Library for faculty, staff, and students to write thank you cards for the tutors and SI leaders to post on the board for all to see. Additionally, IASS provided tutors with cookies and snacks throughout the week to remind them that the work they do is appreciated and does not go unnoticed. The Office of Student Success stands firmly in the belief that our tutors are the stars of their department, and the tutors shine brightly in the support that they provide their peers within the DSU Community.

Flash Back Feature Mr. Mark Harris - Final Mixx The Office of Student Success extends a historical shout-out to Mr. Mark Harris, a current DSU employee working in the William C. Jason Library. Mr. Harris is a notable alum who was featured in the Hornet newspaper when DSU was known as Delaware State College. The article, “Dream Becomes Reality for Final Mixx,” featured below showcases Mr. Harris (pictured front row, first spot) and his bandmates who have just landed a recording contract for their rhythm and blues band, called Final Mixx, which was founded at DSU. OSS acknowledges Mr. Harris for his hard work and dedication to DSU. Do you have a flashback memory that you would like to share? Frequently Asked Questions: Parent/Families October marked the official registration season in the Office of Student Success. Students are strongly encouraged to meet with advisors to complete and engage in pre-registration activities. Below are some tips and questions regarding pre-registration.

Who’s my Academic Advisor?

Students are assigned academic advisors by college, major, and last name. They can view their assignment on the OSS website under the advisor directory. Students can schedule advising appointments via the Navigate Student app under your Success Team.

Alternatively, you can also access it through the DSU Hub app under the Navigate section.

How do I know when to register?

All important dates and deadlines is listed on the academic calendar. The academic calendar can be found on my.desu.edu. Students should review the calendar frequently to ensure they keep ahead of any deadlines or school closings.

What is Pre-Registration?

Pre-registration is what happens before schedules are officially entered in Banner (student information system). Students can meet with their advisors individually or during group advising to review their curriculum guides and complete academic plans and fill out course request forms. Once course request forms and academic plans are approved, then students will be provided pin numbers, so they can self-register in Banner Self-Service.

How does my student get Tutoring?

Free academic support, including tutoring, are available at no charge for all DSU students through Integrated Academic Support Services (IASS). Students can schedule an appointment for any IASS service, including the quantitative reasoning center (math tutoring), writing studio (support for writers), or tutorial center (any subject except math and writing) using EAB’s Navigate. Tutoring is offered in person and online. You can find more info about IASS and its services here: https://www.desu.edu/academics/studentsuccess/integrated-academic-support-services.

How can my student stay organized?

Organization and time management are essential skills for all college students. DSU offers time management and organizational support through Integrated Academic Support Services (IASS). IASS offers tutors that work with students to reinforce class concepts by utilizing multiple learning strategies and applying study/note-taking skills and test-taking strategies. Who can my student speak to about Financial Aid? All students are served by the Office of Financial Aid. Each student is assigned a specific financial aid counselor. Counselors are assigned by the last name.
