Capture District III Gold!

From the Principal

Ready or not, here I come!

This cry from the popular children’s game, Hide-and-Seek, captures the mood at the beginning of each upcoming year. At Delone Catholic, after a very busy summer, we ARE ready to welcome the student body back with a few changes and surprises from last year.

Top-of-mind is the response to the pandemic. While SARS-CoV-2 is invariably here to stay, the public health threat posed by it has clearly diminished as evidenced by updated guidelines provided by the CDC. Practically, this means that masks are no longer required and social distancing and contact tracing will no longer be enforced. All of this effectively means that, especially in schools, post-pandemic life ought to increasingly resemble life before the spring of 2020! Glory be to God!

This summer has also witnessed some important upgrades to our facilities. First, thanks to the fundraising efforts spearheaded by Board member Travis Kopp ‘91 and the generosity of many donors, including Gettle Inc., the Sheppard Gymnasium now features significantly improved lighting and sound systems, among other improvements. I recently stopped by while the lights were on and music was playing and was altogether pleased and surprised by how much better the experience was. I can’t wait to see these put to full effect during the upcoming fall and winter competition seasons.

Second, the cafeteria, which, last year, was the subject of a student design competition, has received painting and lighting upgrades, and will soon have new tables, to reflect the winning design. The new space will be a more convivial and enjoyable place to eat and socialize, and I believe it will stir up school pride as well. Of course, these upgrades would not have been possible without the generosity of benefactors who believe in the school. We are grateful to all our benefactors who, by their generosity, validate our mission of preparing the next generation to “Be Doers of the Word.”

Third, be on the lookout for the installation of a digital sign in replacement of our current one on Oxford Avenue in the coming weeks. With the capacity for remote programming, it will be an important element, together with our social media efforts, in sharing information with our stakeholders. Many thanks to facilities manager Tony Poist ‘78 and his crew members, Tom Meyer and Barry Eyler, for their involvement in the abovementioned and other improvements to our facilities over this past summer. With renewed attention to the environment in which our students learn, compete, and socialize, the facilities are becoming ever more pleasing.

At a time characterized by teacher attrition nationwide, I am happy to report that the Delone Catholic faculty is both fully staffed and blessed by the addition of three new members! Reverend John Rudolph P’22, P’25 who is no stranger to the classroom having previously served in public schools, has joined the mathematics faculty. Dr. Leo White, a philosopher by training with years of university teaching experience, takes his place in the social studies department, while Ms. Jessica Bassili, herself a product of Catholic schools in the Harrisburg Diocese, is ready to fill the big shoes left behind by Mrs. Judy DiPuppo P’93, P’96, as a member of the Sacred Studies faculty. Together with their returning colleagues, each is eager for the academic year.

Ready or not, here I come? Bring it on. After a busy summer, we’re ready and look forward to a rewarding and productive academic year.

With every good wish,

Prepared to Lead National Park Superintendent

“At every stage of my career, I’ve looked at the next step, and I’ve said, I might like to do that job…which is the next one. That’s how I became a division chief, supervising a team of people. Then I looked at Superintendent, which is managing a whole park. I was in a training program for three months, and I said, yeah, I want to do this.”

Such has been the wonderful and interesting career of Tina Cappetta ’88, who’s worked for the National Park Service since she was a student at Delone Catholic. Now the Superintendent at the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park in Maryland, Cappetta has ventured into a variety of positions at a variety of parks in a variety of states. She began her career as a Park Ranger at Gettysburg National Military Park and worked there during college. She’s been all over the country since then, but she says she owes her career to her Delone Catholic guidance counselor.

“For me, it’s about being able to affect change on a larger scale.”

“My career path started with Mr. (John T.) Miller (’65), the guidance counselor,” Cappetta said. “I was in Open Campus study hall, and he came in and he said, ‘I got this letter from the National Parks Service about a fellowship job and I think you sound like the perfect candidate.’ I said I’d really like this. And I’ve been with the NPS for over 34 years.”

Cappetta believes the two most important traits to do what she does is her love of history and good communication skills. She also participated in Mock Trial and Model UN when she was on the McSherrystown campus. That has taken her to posts in places like Jewel Cave National Monument in South Dakota, the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls, N.Y., and Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine.

“For me, it’s about being able to affect change on a larger scale,” Cappetta explained. “I’m really committed to protecting parkland and the things that are associated with them and telling those stories. I love providing opportunities for Americans, and people from around the world, to really connect with those things.”

“There are more than 400 national parks,” Cappetta continued. “And there’s something special about each of those parks. There is something for everyone there, and I encourage people to explore. They are there for people’s enjoyment and for future generations.”

Cappetta’s current post is a park full of history. It has a canal that’s 184.5 miles long, so it contains transportation history, the history of the people who built that canal and the people who lived along the canal. It also has 200 threatened and endangered plant species, along with lots of geology. The park receives more than five million visitors a year and is a top-10 national park. Cappetta never forgets how it all started.

“I got a great education at Delone Catholic,” Cappetta concluded. “I started at Gettysburg while I was a student at Delone, and it prepared me with the skills I needed to be comfortable with public speaking. It was the 125th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg. I was thrown right into the mix with large crowds and lots of chaos. It really was my preparation at Delone that allowed me to jump right in…sink or swim. And I swam.”

Prepared for Life

Actor

Actor Lance Reneker ’13 (or Lance Daniels professionally) was a self-admitted class clown during his four years at Delone Catholic High School. Reneker’s favorite moments during his time at Delone Catholic were spent playing on the Squires football team, making his friends laugh, and learning valuable trade skills in his favorite Technology Education classes with Mr. Bill Grandia. While he didn’t participate in musicals or plays at Delone Catholic, he knew he loved to entertain.

Life certainly changed for Reneker, as today he can be recognized for acting in an episode of Law and Order: Special Victims Unit and as the recurring character Luke on season two of the Epix TV show Bridge and Tunnel

When Reneker was a junior at Delone Catholic, he caught what some might call the theatre bug. This carried him to his senior year when he was discerning what life after high school might look like. “It was an idea,” he said. “I always loved movies. I was reading up on some actors who didn’t really have experience because I didn’t have any and I wasn’t much interested in musicals at the time. That’s when I packed my bags and moved to Los Angeles.”

Before Reneker made the big move across the country in 2014, he saved up by working in his aunt’s restaurant O’Rorke’s in Gettysburg. He took college classes part-time while working but knew he was being called to do something different. He enlisted help from two of his best friends from Delone Catholic to move him to L.A., and they made the journey a road trip.

When Reneker moved to L.A., the goal was to break into the acting scene. “I took acting classes and spent a lot of time trying to get an idea of what acting is. I had no idea what an agent, manager, or casting director were.” After spending time in L.A., Reneker realized New York was where he needed to be for his career. Admittedly, Reneker says he did not know much about what a career in television and film looked like at the time. “There’s really a lot to it, it’s not just what you see on television and on stage,” he said.

In 2016, Reneker made the move to the Big Apple to pursue his blossoming career in a new setting. It was in New York that Reneker began building upon his career little by little, taking classes, and eventually meeting his agents which helped land him that first big break in Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Reneker says once you start on one episode, your resumé just has to keep building. “Next thing you know, you want the bigger recurring role, a big blockbuster movie, or an independent movie, and you just have to keep climbing the ladder.” In addition to Reneker’s work on television, he also acted in a short film where he had his first experience with stunt driving. He says the stunt work was one of his favorite experiences so far in his career.

Reneker recalls his time in class with Mr. Grandia as a big spiritual inspiration for why he pursued an acting career, and those lessons prepared him for life. “Mr. Grandia was big on embracing what you want to do. Creatively he had a very big impact on my life,” he said. “It’s neat to use your imagination creatively whether it’s through woodshop, architecture, or engineering. I always excelled in those classes because they were hands-on and creative.” He says that because of his experiences in his Technology Education classes at Delone Catholic, he would definitely be building something if he was not acting. He says these skills are useful because as an actor, you should always be open to trying new things, as you never know what the next role might make you do.

Reneker currently lives in New York and is busy auditioning for new roles, after wrapping up season two of Bridge and Tunnel, he looks forward to a potential third season. In the meantime, he is sharpening his skills in a variety of ways to prepare himself for where any new part might take him, including writing poetry, learning braille, and going horseback riding.

While Reneker has certainly built up an impressive resumé in the years that he has been acting, he says he is still working on breaking through and hopes to one day star in a movie. Reneker attributes his faith as a way to keep going through the ups and downs of the industry. “It gets quiet and lonely sometimes, so you turn to somebody to talk to,” he said. “You have to have faith that everything is going to work out, and also have faith in yourself that you are right where you’re supposed to be. It’s all in divine timing.”

Prepared to Serve

Music & Ministry

For Parker Staub ’19, his voice is his instrument. Not only for creating beautiful music but for proclaiming his love for the Lord. Music and song have always been a big part of his life. Those talents turned into a way to extend his faith during his time as a student at Delone Catholic High School and now as a senior political science major and music and statistics minor at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.

Staub began his musical journey by singing in the children’s choir, cantering at Masses, playing the piano, and acting in plays as a student at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Gettysburg. Staub says when he entered Delone Catholic, his passion was able to thrive. “There was an opportunity to take music seriously,” he said. “I got involved with the choir and I was in two musicals.” Additionally, Staub got second place in Delone Catholic’s talent show as a freshman.

Staub credits Mr. Brian Yealy ’79 as a big reason why he is where he is today. These experiences at Delone Catholic inspired Staub to further his faithful foundation and join FOCUS Ministries, the Fellowship of Catholic University Students. As a FOCUS minister, Staub can visit college campuses far and wide, share his faith, and lead others with the Word of the Lord. Through FOCUS, Staub was allowed the opportunity of a lifetime to share his music with the world. Staub is hesitant to call himself a songwriter, but he became one upon the completion of his first song, “Very Good.”

It was after the completion of “Very Good” that Staub decided he wanted to enter the FOCUS Ministries Awaken Competition at the 2021 SEEK Conference which highlights students and their works of art that awakens you to the mystery of Christ through beauty.

“Songwriting is not easy, and I don’t know if I’m doing it right, but I try to read scripture daily. I was reading Matthew’s Gospel and the Gentle Mastery of Christ. I had an idea for melodies and chord progression, and when I came across that Gospel I sat at my piano and created the chorus,” he said.

Staub ended up winning the 2021 Awaken Competition’s songwriting category. As the winner, Staub flew to Nashville, Tenn., to record his single. His song can now be heard on major streaming platforms. He noted that one of his proudest moments since releasing his song was being recognized while doing missionary work in Mexico. “Someone from the first FOCUS campus in Latin America came up to me and told me he loved my song, and that it’s international. I never would have anticipated it taking off as it did, but I never really doubted that the Lord would move hearts with it,” Staub said.

Another inspiration for his song was the idea of what faith looks like later on in a person’s life. “I was going to daily Mass and noticed people there in their 70s and 80s. I was wondering what their faith journey was like and what my faith would look like at that stage of my life.”

As far as what the future holds, Staub continues songwriting in his spare time but is looking forward to being as active as possible in FOCUS, and to where his degree and experiences will take him.

“I have a few more songs that I’ve been praying over and working on, but my priority right now is FOCUS and my mission,” Staub said. Staub does not know what the future holds and knows there are many ways his gifts can serve the Lord, and he knows God has a plan for him.

One song he is working on right now is about the questions we ask Jesus about why something is going on in our life. The song highlights the real experiences we go through and asks Jesus for guidance. As Staub discerns his calling, he asks the Lord to show him the way.

Above all, Staub says he is most grateful for his family for guiding him through his journey and for his gift of Catholic education. “You can’t understate the value that faith is present in every classroom at Delone Catholic. That presence through those four years made me realize that this is real and a big part of my life. My first encounter with Christ was at Kairos with Mrs. Phenicie. Prayer every day and the accessibility of the sacraments show that your faith is relevant at any point in life.”

Molly McManus ‘15

Music was always a private love for Molly McManus ’15. While a student at Delone Catholic High School, Campus Ministry and Respect Life Club were McManus’s main activities while keeping her interest in song and worship writing close to her heart. While spending time praying in the Our Lady, Queen of Peace Chapel, which she called her “home base,” McManus discerned what God’s calling for her would be and how she can use her talents to love and serve the Lord, knowing she wanted to help others along the way.

It was those seeds that were planted early on in McManus’s life that grew her into the recording artist, Catholic high school teacher, campus ministry and worship leader that we see today.

After graduating from the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio with a degree in social work, McManus went on to teach Religion and campus ministry at a local Catholic high school. While working, she pursued her love of music further and signed with Dayton Avenue Records in Minneapolis, Minn. McManus flies to Minnesota a few times a year to record her music and shoot accompanying videos.

“I’ve always loved music, leading worship, and writing, but it wasn’t something I started sharing with others until recently,” she said. She never anticipated writing music as a job or teaching with her degree. “Giving in to God and seeing how he just opens doors and doesn’t ask much of us. Me saying yes has led me into doing something where I’m so much happier.”

The song that means the most to McManus is entitled “Perfect Love,” which was written when she was leading a worship retreat. “God was doing a lot in my heart at the time and I had a little break. I sat down with a friend and we wrote it in 20 minutes. It captures who God is to me really well,” she said. The song focuses on the sacrifice that the Lord gave us and how we come alive by His perfect love. “I was lucky enough to be raised in the faith and see that it is more than just an every Sunday thing, but that it’s really important in everyday life,” she said. “It carries me through everything. Every big decision and small decision I make is made through the lens of how I can serve the Lord.” McManus says every act of service and every song is done to get to Heaven and help others do the same.

“My main goal when I’m songwriting is to be very real in my songs and hopefully help someone to be able to connect with that. I always think about a situation in my life. Whether I’m going through it at the time or I’ve been through it.”

McManus credits Delone Catholic for shaping her to love the Lord and be as connected to her faith as possible. Her most formative experiences at Delone Catholic, she recalled were Mrs. DiPuppo’s Scripture class and Kairos with Mrs. Phenicie.

Today, McManus lives and works full-time in Steubenville, the town where she found her calling. She looks forward to pursuing her music career further. She is currently engaged to be married and hopes to one day start a family, and would love to travel more.

To McManus, creating music is about enacting positive change in one’s life. “I’m a sinner and He’s changed my life and I want to show others that He can change their lives too.”

Eat It or Not! Ripleigh Maring ‘25

Being a full-time high school student and running a business sounds like it could be the plot of a television show. For Ripleigh Maring ’25, this is her life. Raised with a businesssavvy spirit and top-notch work ethic, the 15-year-old firstgeneration Squire is changing the entire ice cream scene in McSherrystown.

Ripleigh owns and works at Ripleigh’s Eat it or Not! Innovative Creamery. The creamery is located just steps away from Delone Catholic High School on South Sixth Street. With the help of her entrepreneurial mother, Laura, and some of her best friends from Delone Catholic, Ripleigh serves up the freshest and most unique flavors McSherrystown has ever seen.

The McSherrystown location is the second location for Ripleigh’s, the first in Emmitsburg, Md., which has plans for a new building in the works. The business started in 2021 as a food truck that was renovated out of an old uniform delivery truck and quickly expanded. The food truck can still be found at the Emmitsburg location.

Upon entering Ripleigh’s Creamery, you are met with three tiers of flavor groups to choose from, starting with the “Safety Zone” for classic flavors like Madagascar Vanilla, Chocolate, and Strawberry. Move over to the “We Dare You” section for more unique flavors like Wildberry Lavender and Oreo Cheesecake. Head over to the last flavor tier, “We Double Dog Dare You” and you’ll be greeted with flavors like Honey Jalapeno Pickle, Buffalo Chicken, and Mango Siracha. In addition to the uncommon ice cream flavors, you can find special treats like Pop-It Waffles, Freak Shakes, and Colossal Cookies.

Ripleigh Maring serves a fresh milkshake at Ripleigh’s Eait It or Not Creamery in McSherrystown, Pa.

All the treats at Ripleigh’s are made a little more fun than your average ice cream parlor, and a little fresher. All ice cream at Ripleigh’s is made fresh with A2 milk from a local dairy farm, Apple Valley Creamery. This type of milk is better for you and more digestible for those with dairy sensitivities.

Where did the idea for an innovative ice cream parlor come from? Ripleigh says it was thanks to her world travels. “Ice cream is in super high demand all over the world, especially in Europe. We said, okay, why don’t we mix up all the flavors we’ve seen?”

Ripleigh has traveled to Greece, Japan, England, Iceland, and more. Not only is the team at Ripleigh’s inspired by their travels, but they also use their creativity to think up the next big flavor. “Sometimes we go, ‘what’s the grossest thing we can make?’ or ‘what should totally not be ice cream?’” said Ripleigh’s mom, Laura.

Just like the ice cream flavors she’s tried are local to their home countries, Ripleigh plans for her creameries to stay local to her. “There’s a lot of people who travel far to come here,” Ripleigh said. “Instead of putting it everywhere, we want a location that everyone wants to come to.”

6 The Squire | Fall 2022

No stranger to hard work, Ripleigh works at the McSherrystown location during the week and the Emmitsburg location on the weekends. During the school year, Ripleigh works after school and on the weekends, while also playing on the Delone Catholic girls’ volleyball team.

“She’s been swiping credit cards since she was six,” Laura said. “She learned how to talk to people and get up in the morning and go to work. She doesn’t know any other way.”

To Ripleigh, giving back to her community and her school is important. Every employee at the McSherrystown location is a Delone Catholic High School student, and she also plans to utilize ice cream fundraisers to raise money for important school and local needs.

Ripleigh’s business experience has helped her inside the classroom, too. “My business has helped me be a leader,

especially during group work,” she said. “I find myself trying to help others, and with my friends working here I’ve kept a close bond between them and my school.”

While already having accomplished so much at the young age of 15, one might wonder what comes next for Ripleigh. Upon graduation, she wants to continue being a business owner, plans to attend college, and has a particular interest in astrophysics. “I’d love to be in an observatory,” Ripleigh said. “Study the stars, the universe, and see what’s out there.”

In the meantime, Ripleigh will continue to be a Squire shining star.

Why Limit Yourself?

If you ask role-playing game (RPG) aficionado, elementary school teacher, and business owner Kyle Ott ’11 what his favorite type of game is, he’ll respond with a simple question: “Why limit yourself?” In Ott’s eyes, you can’t have a favorite game if you haven’t played them all.

Upon graduation from Delone Catholic High School, Ott studied English and history at Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md., and received his master’s degree in public communications from Syracuse University in Syracuse, N.Y. “I always knew storytelling was something that I was going to be doing as a profession,” Ott said. “Game design was always an interest and something I enjoyed, but I never would have seen myself doing it as a career.”

Ott’s love of tabletop games started around his time at Delone Catholic when he would play games with his friends, and when he got to college he would play the popular tabletop RPG “Dungeons and Dragons” at the professional level.

Ott’s interest in “Dungeons and Dragons” caught the attention of one of his college professors. “I wound up co-designing a class with him as a junior at Mount St. Mary’s where we taught historybased board games. As soon as that happened, I knew this was what I wanted to do.” Ott recalled.

Ott’s talent and love of storytelling gave him a multitude of valuable experiences both during and after college. “I didn’t know what storytelling looked like, so I did a ton of different internships.” Ott was a political speech-writing intern for a local state representative as an incoming sophomore in college, worked as an editor for a local newspaper, and then ended up in Los Angeles working at a game design studio after graduating from Syracuse University.

That calling would eventually lead Ott to meet his friend and business partner Riley Parks, and their journey would take off like they never anticipated.

The endless possibilities of game creation inspired Ott and Parks to start Desks and Dorks, a board game and role-playing game podcast and game design company based out of Spring Grove, Pa.

The Desks and Dorks podcast centers on Ott and Parks bouncing ideas for tabletop games off one another in a “March Madness” style bracket. Armed with the ideas that come from these discussions, new games take shape. As Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer, Ott describes his role as everything that happens before games hit the shelf like design, storyboarding, and organizing test playthroughs. Ott describes Parks’ role as everything that happens after the game hits the shelf, such as marketing and logistics. Recently, Desks and Dorks released their latest RPG entitled “After the Rain”, which can be downloaded online, ordered, and is now available for purchase in 13 different stores.

For Ott, inspiration comes from everywhere, including inside the classroom. While at Delone Catholic, the humanities, theater, and English classes specifically prepared Ott for what would become his calling. “I like to say that you can’t throw a rock at a table of role-playing game players without hitting someone who was in drama club,” Ott joked.

Ott’s advice for current Squires as they matriculate through high school and further education, take the most difficult teacher you can. “Take the difficult teachers, the ones who will work you hard, because it winds up paying dividends.”

In Ott’s faith journey, he notes that the guidance of Mr. Andy Franko at Delone Catholic was extremely influential. “I remember Mr. Franko telling the class that we need to not just be told what to believe but why we believe it and how that helps other people. I still remember that sentence to this day.” He acknowledges that his faith plays a role in how he thinks up games that different groups of people will enjoy, and how he can be inclusive to everyone.

During the day, Ott is an elementary school teacher in South Western School District. While Ott hopes to be running Desks and Dorks full-time in the future, he always wants to stay connected to education. “Another thing I never thought I would be is a teacher, but now I can’t imagine it any other way. I always want to stay in education in some way, shape, or form and I think educational games are a huge untapped market,” he said.

Faculty Profile

Carmen Brown, Ph.D.

The real challenge for educators at any level is to make the subject matter relevant to the students. Especially in today’s society where kids have short attention spans and can be ambivalent toward things they deem unimportant. A skilled educator not only can make the material matter, but can also demonstrate to the students the value and utility of the discipline.

“I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher because it gave me the opportunity to inspire student learning,” said Carmen Brown, Ph.D. Dr. Brown has been teaching Spanish at Delone Catholic for 26 years, and she continually searches for strategies to engage her students in the language and the culture of her native Spain.

“My basic goal as a teacher is to stimulate students to become personally involved with Spanish as a living language,” Dr. Brown said. “I feel that a language like Spanish can enrich students’ lives as a practical and useful tool, one that can open their eyes to new and different cultures and ideas.”

To that end, Dr. Brown consistently comes up with interesting ways for her students to experience the words and phrases that they’re learning from the textbook. For example, Dr. Brown will have her students watch television shows and movies, and then the students have to create their own shows. The students have to write the script and perform the characters. They have to create the language and command the language.

“I’m always trying to get ways for my students to use it (the language),” Dr. Brown explained. “It might be topics of conversation or situations…I might throw them into a restaurant and they have to order in Spanish. I’m always finding ways…”

Dr. Brown also encourages her students to expand their fluency by studying abroad, or by contributing to the neighboring Hispanic communities.

Dr. Brown taught at Gettysburg College for four years and at Mount St. Mary’s for six before coming to McSherrystown. She originally thought her stay would be short-lived, but she never went back to higher education full-time.

“At Delone I have found the opportunity to share my love for my language and my culture with my students,” Dr. Brown concluded. “My faith has always been an inherent part of my life and upbringing. I was born in a Catholic country where all cultural and social aspects were celebrated according to the Catholic church. Teaching in a Catholic school, where I can practice and share my faith has been another reason why I feel happy at Delone.”

“My basic goal as a teacher is to stimulate students to become personally involved with Spanish as a living language,” Dr. Brown said. “I feel that a language like Spanish can enrich students’ lives as a practical and useful tool, one that can open their eyes to new and different cultures and ideas.”

From the Director of Advancement

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Delone Catholic High School,

Coming as it does in the midst of proofreading the content you will read in this issue and opening a new school year, sitting down to compose this message has brought so many swirling thoughts to mind. Each spring, I ask the members of the graduating class to keep in touch with us so we can continue to tell their stories. There is no doubt that they will go out to make an impact on their corner of the world, but none of us has any idea what that will look like. We have seen the Class of 2022 off to their next stops and you will read about the mark they have made on our school.

Most of the individuals featured in this issue have walked the halls of Delone Catholic during my time in this role. They have indeed made an impact in inspiring and fascinating ways. Many of them have recalled faculty members past and present who have specifically influenced their professional and faith development. We have opened the doors to the Class of 2026, and I see the faces of young men and women whose parents sat beside me in these classrooms. In addition to making me feel incredibly old, it inspires excitement, knowing a new generation is ready to take the following steps on its journey here.

This is only possible because parents over the last 80+ years have seen the value of investing in preparing their children to lead, preparing them to serve, and preparing them for life, so they can Be Doers of the Word locally and around the world. It also takes the investment of our extended family of alumni, current parents, parents of alumni, and community members who want to educate our students and instill in them the faith and values they have received.

We are immensely grateful to all who have provided the financial resources to keep improving. In 2021-22, more than 1,200 donors listed on these pages invested almost $1.2 million in the mission of Delone Catholic! These funds have provided for the growth and expansion of academic programs, for needed facilities improvements in multiple areas of the school, and most importantly, for nearly $500,000 in financial aid to make a Delone Catholic education attainable for anyone who chooses it.

We will continue many time-honored traditions, and we will be starting some new ones, so we ask you to join us on this 2022-23 journey. We invite our alumni, parents, and friends to be part of these activities, to pray with us, and to continue to invest in our students and faculty who will undoubtedly continue to inspire us in new ways!

May God bless you!

Subsidy

by

We thank these parishes for all of their support –spiritual and financial. Through these generous gifts, the members of their parishes receive a reduced tuition rate which is well below the actual cost to educate a student. In effect, even if they do not receive additional tuition assistance from other sources, every member of these parishes receives a partial scholarship to attend Delone Catholic.

The 1940 Society

Leaders emerged to ensure Catholic education would continue for McSherrystown and the surrounding communities after a fire destroyed Central Catholic High School. Following their example, leaders have generously upheld this legacy, thus allowing Delone Catholic High School to advance its mission of creating disciples who are prepared to lead, prepared to serve, and prepared for life since 1940. In celebration of 75 years of leadership, The 1940 Society was established at the outset of the 201415 fiscal year. Membership is open to all individuals, companies, and foundations making annual gifts of $1,000 or more. We are so very fortunate that these leaders continue to step forward and support Delone Catholic at these levels.

BASEBALL WINS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

BASEBALL WINS DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP

It takes a variety of ingredients to win a championship. Most observers believe that talent alone enables the winner to rise above all competitors. While talent is important, many a talented team has failed to achieve the lofty status predicted for it. There’s a lot more to winning a championship than simply having all of the best players.

The Delone Catholic baseball team proved that theory this spring when it won its second District 3 baseball championship in school history. Not only did the Squires capture the gold medal there, but also battled their way to the final four in the state tournament, the deepest run in that bracket in school history.

“I was just trying to bring them together to gel,” said firstyear head coach Jimmy Smith ’82. “I thought if we had good continuity…our numbers for (off-season) weight lifting were higher than they’ve ever been, and that was a good start because that showed the interest was there. We also had some spots to fill, and it’s all about competition. We had so many players that were team players, they made it easy to coach. They weren’t selfish.”

After finishing the regular season 17-6 and 14-4 in the YAIAA, the Squires also found a little bit of luck in the District playoffs. Delone Catholic earned the second seed by a slim margin over league rival Fairfield. That put Fairfield into the play-in game against sixth-seeded Upper Dauphin, who entered the tournament with a losing record. Fairfield lost and the Squires cruised past UD in the semifinals on the strength of Jake Sherdel’s ‘22 pitching performance. The offense also came alive to score enough runs to achieve the 10-run rule in the fifth inning. Which meant Sherdel could remain under the pitching limit for the week and be eligible to pitch a few innings in the District championship if necessary.

In the other half of the bracket, top seed Camp Hill wasn’t having an easy time. Fourth-seeded Kutztown took the Lions to extra innings in the semifinal, which made Camp Hill extinguish the pitching limit for its top pitcher.

That didn’t make things much easier, however, in the championship game. Trailing 3-2 going into the sixth inning, the Squires scored once to tie it and then scored twice with two outs in the seventh inning for the victory.

“Our MO all season was finding a way to do just enough,” Smith said. “Our lineup wasn’t spectacular, but our pitching was really good and our defense was really good. Our offense would find a way to score one more run than the other team. We only had three regulars who hit over .300.”

The other strength of the team was the seasoned coaching staff. While this was Smith’s first year as head coach, he’s been a coach in the program for years. He also could lean on his two assistant coaches, his son Brett Smith ’13 and Tom Collins.

Brett has the distinction of being the captain of the football, basketball, and baseball teams in his senior year in McSherrystown when Delone Catholic became the first school in District 3 history to win all three of those championships in the same academic year. Brett took his baseball talents to Bucknell University where he remains the university’s all-time hits leader. He played some Independent League baseball for a few years before settling in this year with his alma mater.

“There was always talent in the group,” Brett said. “I just felt like there was something missing in how they played the game. They weren’t always focused, not always being in the right spot. But they bought into what we were telling them. And then we had some close wins in the beginning of the season which made them buy in even more. They saw how we were helping them play the game the right way. We encouraged them to continue to get better every day, and to find a way to play their best.

“It’s all with the players,” Brett concluded. “They worked together and they believed in each other.”

SPORTS SHORTS

2021-22 Boys’ Basketball

The boys’ basketball team experienced a strong resurgence under YAIAA Division III Coach of the Year Brandon Staub. The team experienced its first winning season (17-9) since 2013-14, its first YAIAA tournament appearance since 2016-17, and its first time in the state tournament since 2012-13. A third-place finish in the District 3 tournament was a solid conclusion to the season that also saw Camdyn Keller ‘24 earn first-team YAIAA Division III all-star.

2021-22 Girls’ Basketball

The girls’ basketball team continues to set the bar high for all YAIAA programs. The ladies finished off a 28-2 campaign by capturing the third straight District 3 (4A) championship, the sixth in school history. It finished 12-0 in YAIAA Division III and lost in the league championship game. The team lost in the 4A western semifinals in the state tournament. Giana Hoddinott ‘22 eclipsed the 1,000-point mark, finishing her career at 1,448.

2021-22 Wrestling

The Squires grapplers capped a successful campaign with a fourth-place showing in the YAIAA team standings, and a second-place finish at the Big Cat Brawl. Artem Reichart ‘22 (138) and Domonic Giraffa ‘24 (152) were regional qualifiers after both also were place winners at the District 3 tournament, along with Justin Emeigh ‘22. Giraffa made it to the second day of competition at regionals. Emeigh, Reichart, Jack Scovitch ‘22, and Sam Scovitch ‘22 graduate with some critical experience, but Giraffa will lead a strong returning group.

2021-22 Baseball

Led by an experienced trio of senior pitchers, the Squires earned their second District 3 championship in school history with a 5-3 victory over Camp Hill. First-year head coach Jimmy Smith ’82 guided the club to a 19-6 record that included a co-championship in YAIAA Division IV and a YAIAA championship appearance. The team also made it to the final four in the PIAA tournament for the first time in school history. Senior hurler Jake Sherdel compiled a 7-1 record with a 1.52 ERA, including striking out 100 batters on the season.

The Squire | Fall 2022

SPORTS SHORTS

2021-22 Boys’ Lacrosse

Freshman goalie Austin Gregg set a new school record for saves in a season, with his 170 saves crushing the previous record of 130. Landon Smith, junior attackman, led the offense in scoring with 28 goals, while Tayten Hix ‘22 was the top defender with 34 caused turnovers. Head coach Cole Myers ‘16 said his team was very young but had outstanding senior leadership, showing great perseverance and strength throughout the season.

2021-22 Boys’ Tennis

The doubles team of Ben Elsner ‘22 and Andrew Gervasi ‘22 earned fourth place in the YAIAA tournament to lead the team. Six seniors provided the leadership for the 6-7 squad. Six players return in what coach Denise Dunn has labeled a “rebuilding year.”

2021-22 Softball

After a slow start to the season, the team switched gears and finished second (13-7, 13-4) in Division IV of the YAIAA and qualified for the District 3 playoffs. Senior infielder, Meredith Wilson ‘22 was a Division IV first-team member sporting a .418 batting average. Junior pitcher Amy Anderson ‘23 also was a first-team all-star, and she leads a strong contingent of seven returning starters for the 2023 campaign.

2021-22 Track & Field

Coach Caine Morehead ‘11 said his team had a very successful season after the girls finished second in the league and the boys third. It was the best boys’ season since 2011. Samantha Smith ‘24, Emma Bunty ‘24, Marissa Miller ‘22, Makenna Mummert ‘22, Laura Knobloch ‘24, and Fina Mochi ‘23 all earned individual medals at the District 3 championship, while the 4x100 group of Madison O’Brien ‘23, Bunty, Emily McCann ‘22, and Amy Rupp ‘22 also medaled. Gage Zimmerman ‘24 and Wyatt DiDio’22 medaled on the boys’ side.

Then, Principal William J. Lippe continued a school tradition of recognizing members of the 50th anniversary Class of 1972 whose grandchildren were among the graduates. Mr. Michael Sanders is the grandfather of senior William Seymore. Mrs. Mary (McIntyre) Sherdel is the grandmother of senior Jacob Sherdel. Mr. Richard Staub is the grandfather of senior Elijah Staub.

Mr. Lippe continued by addressing the uniqueness of the Class of 2022 in the school’s history and in the context of world events. “My dear seniors, thank you for developing and sharing your unique gifts with us these past four years; over the past four years, with you, we have all grown increasingly ‘unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ.’

“You are a historic class. Having begun your high school careers in the complacency of the pre-pandemic days of 2018 and 2019, you found yourselves two years ago learning under unprecedented conditions. You did this for more than a year and you succeeded, thereby revealing your character, and now emerge with the hope of better days ahead, seasoned, in my respects, beyond your years.”

Mr. Lippe also extended appreciation to all those who helped support the class, including their families, the Catholic parishes of the Adams Deanery, the Delone Catholic Board of Directors, and the faculty and staff. He especially recognized those members of the staff who are retiring at the end of the school year, Mrs. Judith DiPuppo, Mr. John Hendrick, and Ms. Theresa (Murren) Glass ’60. Bishop Gainer spoke to the graduates next, reminding them that each one of them is a unique individual created in the image and likeness of God. He encouraged each of them to continually seek out the “Why?” of their lives – the purpose for which God created each individual with their personal gifts and blessings.

LeAnna Madison Baker, Valedictorian of the Class of 2022, then addressed her classmates, urging them to “live fearlessly” by facing their doubts and persevering through adversity to pursue their passions.

LeAnna is the daughter of Derek and Tammy Baker of East Berlin. LeAnna has held many leadership roles during her high school career, including Executive Student Council Vice-President, National Honor Society President, Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica Co-Vice President, Mu Alpha Theta Secretary, and Interact Club Community Outreach Coordinator. She was also a member of the National English Honor Society, the Respect Life Club, Kairos Core Team, and a Varsity Cheerleader. LeAnna has been accepted to Washington and Lee University, University of Richmond, Bucknell University, Furman University, Salve Regina University, Seton Hall University, Catholic University of America, Immaculata University, Randolph College,

Chatham University, Allegheny College, and Baylor University. She plans on attending Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., to double major in political science and biology.

A Senior Awards Ceremony was held on the morning of Thursday, May 19, also in the Sheppard Gym, with several guests on hand to present scholarships and awards. In total, the Class of 2022 has been offered $11,487,692.68 in scholarships. Nearly two-thirds of the class earned some scholarship funds.

Members of the Class of 2022 and their families then gathered for a Baccalaureate Mass on Thursday evening, May 19 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hanover, Pa., with Mr. Daniel Breen, Superintendent of Catholic Schools and Secretary for Education at Diocese of Harrisburg, in attendance.

Following the Baccalaureate, the school treated graduates and their guests with the Dairy Dan ice cream truck and Revonah soft pretzels to show their appreciation for the love and support provided to the students over their high school careers.
