Knights in Training Inspiration can emerge from all sorts of sources, many of them unexpected and unplanned, such as a friend’s casual observation on some matter which opens up a new direction in life or the way sunlight filters through a window at a certain time of the day that prompts a more commodious arrangement of furniture. As Christians, we do not believe in coincidence. Thus, we understand inspiration as God’s plan unfolding through what may sometimes appear to be random occurrences.

Inspiration, thus understood, may have been at work when Rev. Cyril Allwein, the School’s first principal, named Delone Catholic’s athletic teams the “Squires” and “Squirettes” to honor the donor of the School’s original building and the man for whom the School was named, Charles J. Delone, Esquire.

Although in modern-day America, “esquire” is used after a surname to denote a member of the legal profession, in the Middle Ages, “Esquire,” or the shortened form “Squire,” was a knight-in-training. Once a boy had finished his service as a page at about 14 years of age, he would take on the position of a squire to prepare for his own knighthood by serving as an attendant to a knight, maintaining his equipment, and carrying his armor, shield, and sword.

Looking back on the seemingly accidental choice of “Squire” for Delone Catholic’s athletic teams and mascot, it seems clear that it was inspired by the Lord. How else can one explain the choice of a term that so thoroughly captures the work of the Delone Catholic student? As fourteen-year-olds, our students come to us as spiritual knights-in-training to be prepared for the fight ahead a fight that all human beings must endure. The Apostle Paul warns in Ephesians 6:12, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

At this point, it is worth noting that a squire of the Middle Ages didn’t have to be taught what a battle was and when it was occurring. Unlike kinetic battles, however, spiritual battles are not so easy to identify. Thus the training of our Squires begins with an understanding of the adversary, Satan, and his weapons, including lies, temptation, and accusations, and that fear, anxiety, depression, apathy, and despair are all signs that a spiritual battle is being waged.

How do we prepare our Squires (and Squirettes) for this battle? Our knights-in-training must learn to put on, in St. Paul’s words, “the whole armor of God.” Like the squire of old whose job of maintaining his knight’s armor made him intimately familiar with it and thus ready to don the armor himself one day, our Squires must become intimately familiar with God’s armor so that when they wear it they will “be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might (Eph 6:10)”.

As to what God’s armor is, fortunately, St. Paul lays it out in some specificity. Those entering the spiritual fight must: gird their waist with truth; put on the breastplate of righteousness; shoe their feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; take the shield of faith which will “quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one;” and take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God (Eph 6:13-17).

To fully unpack all that St. Paul gives us in these few bible passages will take time and careful study by our Squires and Squirettes, but we believe it is a worthy pursuit and will offer great reward. Our goal, then, is to plant in all of their hearts the words of St. Paul: “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand” Ephesians 6:13.

This edition of The Squire will introduce you to members of the Delone Catholic community who, in one way or another, embody the Spirit of a Squire. May their examples inspire us and our students to put on “the whole armor of God.” With every good wish,

Giving Back the Gift of Music Erick Von Sas ’10

by Stephanie R. Leader Von Sas and Yealys The Spirit of a Squire gives back to school and community in any way, and among the most beautiful gifts a Squire can give back to Delone Catholic High School is the gift of their time and talent.

Erick Von Sas ’10 has dedicated his time and talent to the Marching Squires, the Delone Catholic High School Music Program, and his mentors Mr. and Mrs. Brian ’79 and Lynn ’84 Yealy since his high school graduation.

Von Sas’s love of music began as a student at St. Joseph’s Elementary School in Hanover, where Lynn was his elementary music teacher.

He started on the baritone, then transitioned to playing the tuba when he became a student at Delone Catholic in 2006. “I found my people right away,” he remarked. “Because of the environment that Brian and Lynn create throughout the department, I took anything I could that was a graduation requirement so that I was always in the band room.”

After graduation, Von Sas continued his education at the University of Dayton in Ohio. As a recent graduate from the Delone Catholic music program, the Yealys asked if he would come back and share his talents as a staff member during summer band camp. From there, every summer while in college, he came back to work at camp as an instructor. “To have the faith to ask me as an 18-year-old to come back and work as a staff member is not super common. They had the trust in me to guide and help shape things,” he said.

By 2014, Von Sas had begun teaching his own band, and in 2017, he moved to teach in Maryland and currently is band director at Crofton High School in Anne Arundel County. In 2021, he earned his Master of Music in Music Education from The American Band College of Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash. As a new father and full-time music educator, Von Sas has his hands full but continues to work intermittently as a drill designer and visual consultant for the Delone “Don’t stop playing. way to keep making music.”

Now, Von Sas has the opportunity to shape the music program at Crofton High School, as the school recently opened in the fall of 2020 and is still establishing its music program. The COVID-19 pandemic presented lots of challenges as far as the restrictions on the music program, but despite the challenges, the program has grown significantly since its beginning. “When I first took the job, it was just band and orchestra, now I am able to teach band and a music technology course. We are marching 70 students this fall, and have about 130 children split between two concert bands.”

Von Sas attributes much of his success and the success of the program with which he works to the skills he learned while a student at Delone Catholic, and then a graduate staff member. “Brian and Lynn really had a big impact on not only the trajectory of me becoming a music educator but also on my style, and how I teach,” he said. He notes that being a part of a smaller, more intimate program at Delone Catholic made him understand the value of personal music instruction and individual contributions, especially as he moved on to his undergraduate studies. “Brian and Lynn always talk about how important it is for everyone to contribute. If someone isn’t contributing (in a smaller band) then it is noticeable. To take that frame of reference to a school with 400 students in the band program makes you realize how formative individual attention is.” He also says that maintaining high expectations and coming from a very systems-oriented perspective allowed him to grow in his career.

To students currently involved in the Music Program, Von Sas has one piece of advice: “Don’t stop playing. Find a way to keep making music.” He says to think of being part of the band as “one big group project.”

To Von Sas, giving back to the school that formed his vocation of music education is incredibly important. “Thinking of the motto of the school, ‘Be Doers of the Word,’ I get a lot of joy out of coming back because the quality of the students here is very high,” he said. He also notes that the collective years of everything the Yealys put into the music program at Delone Catholic is incredible. “Working with high schoolers, middle schoolers, and students in general can be demanding and challenging,” he said. “Four decades of impact is no small measure, and absolutely amazing.”

39 Years of Service Ruthann Pinkos

by Stephanie R. Leader Nearly four decades of Squires have had the privilege of receiving their scientific education from Miss Ruthann Pinkos, now a legend in the halls of Delone Catholic. After 39 years of teaching in the science department and spearheading a variety of extracurricular activities, she is now enjoying her well-deserved retirement. Over the years, she has seen many of her former students go on to careers in the sciences and medicine, thanks to her instruction, discipline, and high standards. Pinkos has left an indelible mark during her tenure, teaching courses in chemistry, earth and space science, and biology. She also spent a number of years serving as department chair.

Her story began as a student at Millersville University in Millersville, Pa., when she participated in a job search program Ruthann Pinkos held by Delone Catholic. She applied and was soon hired to officially begin her teaching career. A product of 12 years of Catholic education herself, Pinkos was drawn to the unique spirit of Delone Catholic.

“To me, the Spirit of a Squire is tradition, dedication, and family,” she said.

Her extracurricular leadership also shaped students outside of the classroom. “Some of my favorite moments over the years were when I was directing shows, watching the students, and doing everything for Student Council,” she recalled. She remembered how her heart swelled as she witnessed a student who had trouble speaking overcome their struggles during rehearsal or saw a shy student break out of their shell and showcase a talent that no one knew they had. During Homecoming, she “liked the powderpuff games and just helping kids be creative.”

As a teacher, she had a few driving philosophies that guided her in the classroom. “My concern was always to be fair, consistent, and try to reach as many (students) as I could.” As a scientific educator within a Catholic environment, she was always driven by her faith. “In the classroom, (my faith) guided me in showing the students the beauty of the universe that God created. That continues even today, I just saw wild ponies go swimming. I am always in awe of God’s creation.”

As Pinkos moves on to the next stage of her life, she looks forward to connecting with her former students and seeing what life has in store for them after their four years at Delone Catholic come to an end. “I just saw one of my students get his doctorate, and I saw another student that’s gone on to be an aerospace engineer,” she said proudly.

“It was a very fun and rewarding career. I still get text messages that say ‘thank you.’ That is what makes it all worth it.”

Pinkos has advice to future educators who are carrying on the tradition left by so many wonderful Delone Catholic teachers who came before — “Always be fair, consistent, mean what you say, and say what you mean.”

Retirement has now begun for Pinkos, and she is relocating to Delaware to be closer to her family and the beach, where she says she will spend her days on the dock fishing.

As for her time at Delone Catholic, she leaves with one remark — “It’s been a good, good 39 years, and I have no regrets.”

Profile Hank and Chris Shea Forensics Supporters & Forensics Team Impact Profile

by Eric T. Lawrence ’98 Bright-eyed teenagers enter the halls of Delone Catholic not entirely sure where the next four years will take them, to say nothing of the 50 years after that. They encounter faculty and staff members eager to help them use the classroom and extracurricular activities to ultimately discern where they are being called. The results often lead the Spirit of a Squire to be filled with gratitude.

The story of Hank Shea ’74 becoming a grateful Squire began when his father, an employee of Westinghouse, was transferred to Gettysburg in the fall of 1970. Shea is the oldest of five brothers, the three oldest of whom would graduate from Delone Catholic before another transfer for Mr. Shea took the family to New Jersey.

Shea recalls his parents being very supportive of his activities, which were many and varied, including time spent as a member of the basketball and golf teams, the international relations club, and student government, where he ultimately served as the student body president as a senior. With an already full resume, another pursuit at Delone Catholic served to open doors that have led to a vast array of experiences over the past 50 years.

“The really important and most transformative involvement was in Forensics,” Shea said. “Dad said that we could play whatever sports we wanted as long as our grades were good enough, but all of us had to participate in either speech or debate. It turned out to be very wise.”

Shea recalls that he “dabbled” in debate, but as a sophomore, he got into extemporaneous speech because of Delone Catholic Hall of Honor inductee Mary Furlong.

“Mary was a strong taskmaster,” Shea recalled.

“She said to me and Mike Dorman ’74 that we could be very competitive at the state and national level. Starting in my junior year, three days a week, sometimes more, we would eat our sandwich in about five minutes and then go to Mary’s classroom.

We would give extemporaneous speeches on topics she would give us. We did that for two years.”

That dedication was rewarded when Shea and Dorman qualified for the National Catholic Forensics League tournament in New Orleans, La., as seniors. “There was not a lot of money, so we took a bus from Hanover to New Orleans,” Shea said. “I don’t think there was even money for a hotel along the way. We just slept on the bus, but it was a wonderful experience.”

His experiences at Delone Catholic, particularly with Forensics, led to his being accepted to the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University on an ROTC scholarship. He spent time during college as an intern on Capitol Hill and won a competition for the Circumnavigators Foundation Fellowship as a junior. The prize for that win was a 90-day world trip that took him to South America, Africa, and South Asia. “Seeds planted at Delone were nurtured at Georgetown. That’s the bottom line,” Shea said.

He was accepted into the Harvard University School of Law, leading the U.S. Army to defer his active duty until he graduated. Shea was named Assistant to the Army General Counsel, working at the Pentagon, where he served on the Panama Canal Commission, as the lawyer for Arlington National Cemetery, and in numerous roles that increased professional opportunities for women.

Following a move to Minnesota in the mid-1980s to raise a family, Shea served as an assistant U.S. Attorney, mostly prosecuting white-collar crime. “I had a wonderful career as a federal prosecutor drawing on what I learned at Delone,” Shea said. “I could have spent the rest of my career in the courtroom and been fulfilled, but about 20 years ago, I wondered if I was doing enough for my community.”

Shea has spent the last 20 years working at the St. Thomas University School of Law, based in Minneapolis, partly as a way to promote restorative justice. Even before COVID-19 and ubiquitous virtual classrooms, he was using video conferencing to teach students in Minnesota and Arizona at the same time, and over the years, he has brought more than three dozen former offenders, many of whom he prosecuted, into the classroom to “share the lessons they have learned from their failures.”

Over the last five years, he has gotten involved with the Veterans Defense Project, a non-profit advocacy organization. He is currently on sabbatical from St. Thomas, focusing his efforts on this project full-time. “Especially in the last 20 years, with veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan, a lot of criminal activity has resulted from invisible injuries like PTSD and traumatic brain injuries,” Shea said. “We work to secure justice for all veterans and give them a second chance if their offenses are a result of military service. These are good people who served our country. Their families and communities love them, but they have to deal with these issues stemming from their service.”

This is one of the many philanthropic areas Shea and his wife, Chris, have supported. They married in the mid-1990s after Shea was widowed. Chris spent 35 years working for General Mills and retired as the Executive Vice President for External Affairs. “I worked for the government,” Shea said. “She was very generously compensated by the company. That’s what has allowed us to engage in a wide range of philanthropy.”

Their passions lie in feeding the hungry, sheltering the homeless, assisting victims of war and natural disasters, and helping veterans through restorative justice. “For my entire life, I have supported Catholic education, ministries, and outreach,” Shea said. “Since we’ve been married, Chris has joined me in that.”

Delone Catholic has been a grateful beneficiary of the Shea’s generosity.

The school’s donor records go back nearly 30 years, and Shea has been a mainstay. “I cannot remember the first time I gave to Delone,” Shea said. “I like to support Delone because it made me who I have become. In recent years, we have given in memory of Mary (Furlong) and Chuck (Glessner – another retired faculty member and Hall of Honor inductee). That is an easy thing to do. They did so much for me and my brothers.

My affinity for Forensics comes from the huge impact it had on me as a person. Their (Furlong and Glessner) dedication and sacrifice created a debt we can never repay, but we can plant seeds and provide opportunities like those that were provided for us.”

Like Shea and Dorman before them, current members of the Delone Catholic Forensics team have excelled. In the spring, a strong contingent qualified for the national tournament in Louisville, Ky. Thanks to the generosity of the Sheas, the current Squires were able to have the lifechanging experience of representing their school on the national stage. And they didn’t even have to sleep on the bus.

“Our hope is that Delone continues to educate community leaders who think clearly, act justly, and interact respectfully with others,” Shea said. “That is so important in the world today. Delone Catholic taught me about my responsibility to others through my faith, my family, and my friendships. It taught me to feel and express gratitude and to work together with other people to make the world a better place. The Delone Squire Spirit is something you just wish you could have every student benefit from.”

SPAIN

Spanish Sojourn

This past summer, two Delone Catholic High School students traveled to Spain as part of a Spanish language immersion trip.

Senior, Samantha “Sam” Smith ’24 and sophomore, Jaqueline “Jackie” Martinez ’26 traveled with Delone Catholic International Student Coordinator, Dr. Barbara Wert and her granddaughter, Averie, as part of a trip sponsored by Lancaster Mennonite School. Between the two schools, a total of seven students and four chaperones participated in the trip.

From June 5-19, Smith and Martinez enjoyed the cultural experience of Madrid and Leon, touring major sites (Moorish, Roman, and Medieval structures and ruins), visiting a few schools, eating wonderful savory food, and walking part of the Camino trail.

During week one, each student stayed with a host family in the suburbs of Madrid. Smith described her host family as very kind.

As an “immersion” trip, both Smith and Martinez were thrust into the midst of the Spanish language.

feel right at home. Smith attended one of Claudia’s horse shows, and was amazed at how beautiful and celebratory it was: “It’s like a festival for the riders and horses.” Martinez described her family, whose daughter, Silvia, was of a similar age, as very welcoming.

As an “immersion” trip, both Smith and Martinez were thrust into the midst of the Spanish language. Smith, who has only taken Spanish 1 and 2 at Delone Catholic so far, and tends to be shy said, “Since you have to communicate, it forced me to use the language.” Martinez, who is a native Spanish speaker, commented that their dialect is very different; in fact, her host family is from Catalan, which has a distinct dialect from that used in Madrid.

Both students were able to enjoy the culture of Madrid. Smith’s favorite part was the shops in Plaza Mayor, the central square of the city. Martinez was amazed by the beautiful paintings at the Prado Museum (Museo Nacional del Prado) – especially the art with a Catholic theme, of which there was much. Both loved the food and the Spanish emphasis on celebrating meals.

The second part of their trip took them north of Madrid, where they walked part of the Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James: think Appalachian Trail as a pilgrimage). The students walked approximately 20 miles of the trail over two days, ending near the city of Leon. Walking in the Spanish heat, Martinez said that although “I thought I was going to die, walking the trail felt calming” and allowed the students to bond together. Dr. Wert noted that she kept track of her steps on an app during the trip and that the students probably clocked in over 100 miles of walking over the two weeks.

Smith and Martinez, who were acquaintances before the trip, are now good friends. Moreover, the two made many friends over the course of the trip. They still keep in touch with their newfound Spanish friends, and their friendships continue with the students from Lancaster Mennonite.

Although at first they were both homesick, and it was difficult for them being in a new environment and a new country, both are very glad that they went, and would love to go again.

Summer Fun & Learning in Spain

Most of us immerse ourselves in lifelong learning, even when we don’t see it coming. In June I had one such experience! The Lancaster Mennonite School in conjunction with an International Exchange student agency, PursueLanguages, sponsored a twoweek “Spanish Immersion Trip”. I had the privilege of chaperoning three young ladies on that trip as we tagged along with several students and teachers from the Lancaster Mennonite School.

My goals for the trip were multi-faceted. First, I wanted to travel to the school and area where one of our International students from Madrid, Marcos Lau, lived. Second, I hoped to visit at least one other school to network with teachers and administrators to see if I could encourage other students from Spain to come to the U.S. and Delone Catholic High School in particular. Third, I wanted to learn a little more of a foreign language and Spanish seemed the most practical. And finally, I wanted to see some ancient history and historical sites up close and personal. I am pleased to tell you that ALL of these things happened! My quest for new experiences and new learning was an adventure I will never forget. I encourage all to try this type of experience.

Our group traveled together (seven individuals from Lancaster and the three young ladies (two were Delone Catholic students and one was my granddaughter) and spent two weeks in Spain.

We stayed with families for the first week to be immersed in the Spanish language and culture and we each met people who we will be in touch with for the rest of our lives. We all visited three schools in Spain, one was in Sahagun, one was in Madrid, and one was in Leon. I also visited with administrators from four other schools in those cities with my counterpart from Lancaster Mennonite (Christy Horst) and our travel guide (Mr. Ephraim Wambu) from PursueLanguages.

I learned that people in other countries with other backgrounds are really similar to people from the U.S. that I know. They are friendly, intelligent, eager to teach and learn, and proud to show visitors their country and culture. We all learned a great deal about the history of the country through visits to historical sites, and museums, and being invited to festivals and lunches in wonderful settings with local cuisine. We learned a great deal about ancient sites – more about the Roman culture in Spain in up close ways… I touched a Roman wall ruin and walked on castle grounds where individuals walked hundreds of years ago.

This trip reinforced something I have always known – to learn is to experience life and history up close and personally. I know that I learned a great deal in a short two weeks and I believe that my co-travelers, Averie, Samantha, and Jackie did as well.

Have fun, keep traveling, and learn something new every day!

Unearthing History Tara Noel ‘20

One of the spirits of Squirehood is acknowledging and respecting the past while forging a path to the future. One Squire in particular who recognizes this is Tara Noel ’20. Since graduating from Delone Catholic High School, Noel has embarked on archeological journeys that uncovered stories from her own backyard in Gettysburg, Pa., and most recently, a study abroad spring semester and summer archeological excursion in Greece and France where she uncovered artifacts that will shape future historical research.

Having come from a family steeped in Catholic education, Noel immersed herself in a world of learning from an early age. Her mother, Crystal ’94, had a powerful influence on her academic pursuits. “My mom was a teacher at St. Francis School and then became a principal at Sacred Heart School. I followed her where she went, and having that strong base really helped my education.”

While a student at Delone Catholic, Noel could be found dabbling in a variety of extracurricular activities including swimming, Speech and Debate, Spiritual Life, and involvement in honor societies. When it came to her life after high school, she knew her love of learning would clear the way and give her an idea of what her future studies should look like. A desire to stay close to home and the best academic offering brought her to Gettysburg College to continue her education, and she now majors in English and anthropology, with a focus in archeology.

“In college, I knew I really liked history, English, reading, and writing. I didn’t know how to incorporate that into a future career, but then I got to college and explored different avenues of academia to know what I was passionate about. It took a lot of hard work to figure out the right path.”

That work included an internship with the Gettysburg National Military Park in the summer of 2021, which launched Noel into a love of excavation and archaeology. “I only had one archaeology-related class before (the internship)... I learned a lot of my hands-on skills (there).” Through that internship, Noel was able to participate in the excavation of an old janitor’s house from the Civil War, participate in a panel discussion for the park, and did metal detection work. Then, for her spring semester in 2023, an archeological study abroad opportunity of a lifetime brought her to The American School of Classical Studies bioarchaeology lab in Athens, Greece, and then the historic Roman harbor town of Lattes, France, for a threeweek program in the summer. The work, although physically demanding, provided Noel with an unparalleled education and understanding of the world in these historic places.

Among the artifacts Noel has uncovered include some that were unexpected. “We’re not digging up lost treasure; we find common items like ceramics, glass, nails, but sometimes you find metal objects like coins that you would not think would be preserved,” she said. “While excavating a floor, I found the top of a water pitcher. That was something that was uncommon to find, especially fully intact.”

Now, Noel is back at Gettysburg College to complete her senior year and would like to continue her already burgeoning experience in archeology and excavation. “One day I hope to get my master’s degree. I am interested in travel writing or working at national parks in the American Southwest. It’s up in the air, but I want to do something that combines my love of writing and travel, in a historically related way,” she said.

While the specifics are still unfolding, Noel’s passions and willingness to take risks will no doubt be cornerstones for her future success. She thanks Delone Catholic for giving her that strong confidence in herself. “Being an alumnus of Delone Catholic, I would say I learned how to work hard and communicate well with others, have a strong faith in myself, faith in God, and faith in the community around me,” she said. “The Spirit of a Squire means being fearless, confident in yourself, and not being afraid to go for what you want.”

The Society shows Delone Catholic’s eternal gratitude to those whose philanthropic support ensures that future generations will graduate as “Doers of the Word”.

As the founder of the concept and the Patron Saint of Catholic Schools, Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton holds an important place at Delone Catholic – so much so that she has been chosen as the Patroness of Delone Catholic. All who come through the school’s main entrance pass under a statue depicting the first native-born American saint, serving as a reminder of her ability to intercede on behalf of the school’s students, faculty, alumni and friends.

Since its founding, Delone Catholic has been the beneficiary of great support from countless individuals. Members of The Society create a legacy that extends their generosity into the future with the confidence that the assets they have created during their lifetime will continue to support work they find meaningful. Often, this can be done with little or no current financial impact to the individual while allowing them to have a profound impact on countless lives.

The first members of The Society are those whose generous gifts have been realized through bequests and other planned giving vehicles following their passing. Acknowledging that this list is likely incomplete, we thank them for their great belief in Delone Catholic and pray that these good works have gone with them.

Delone Catholic Receives Two Largest Planned Gifts in School History

The first six weeks of 2023 turned out to be one of the most transformative time periods ever for Delone Catholic High School. Before the calendar could turn from February to March, the school received the two largest planned gifts ever given to the school, totaling nearly $1.5 million.

In early January, Delone Catholic received nearly $330,000 from the estate of Cynthia Lawrence ’75. About a decade prior to her sudden passing in October 2021, Ms. Lawrence had made provisions in her will to provide funding for tuition assistance to students attending Delone Catholic. In recognition of her inseparable relationship with her parents, Robert H. ’51 and Nancy (Strasbaugh) ’53 Lawrence, and the love all three had for their alma mater, these funds will establish The Lawrence Family Scholarship Fund, an endowment which will provide resources in perpetuity for families who may not otherwise be able to choose a Delone Catholic education.

Exactly one month later, Delone Catholic received the first of two installments of a planned gift from Mary Louise Eltz ’52. Ms. Eltz returned to Delone Catholic following graduation from college and served as a physical education teacher from 1955-1958. Her career took her to a public school in northern Pennsylvania before she settled at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she was the inaugural women’s basketball and women’s tennis coach. She served as a member of the university’s physical education faculty until her retirement in 1997 and was inducted into the Crimson Hawks’ athletic hall of fame. By naming Delone Catholic a beneficiary of a life insurance policy and an individual retirement account (IRA), her total gift of more than $1.1 million has established an endowment to support the operations of Delone Catholic in perpetuity.

Through different vehicles, these alumnae made the ultimate gift to Delone Catholic. Having already made significant contributions in their families and communities, and through their life’s work, they have established a lasting legacy among Delone Catholic’s most generous benefactors. Their belief and investment in the mission of Delone Catholic will ensure it continues to thrive for generations to come. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for their generosity, and pray that God will grant them eternal rest, and make their gifts fruitful in building His Kingdom!

2022-23 Boys’ Basketball The Squires (17-9, 9-5 YAIAA III) burst out of the gates with 11 wins in their first 13 contests and reached the PIAA District 3 Championship games for the first time in 10 years. Coming off a regular season sweep at the hands of Diocesan and division rival York Catholic, Delone Catholic went on the road in the first round of the District playoffs and grabbed a four-point win against the Fighting Irish. In the next round, the Squires put together a stirring comeback on the road against top-seeded Columbia. Down by 17 at halftime, the visitors relentlessly clawed back to a 54-48 win. After earning district silver, the season finished just short in one of the most thrilling games ever played in the Sheppard Gym. The Squires battled North Penn-Mansfield in a back-andforth PIAA first round game, and they had a good look at a buzzer-beating three-pointer which would have sent the game to overtime, but rimmed out.

Camden Keller ’24 and Bryson Kopp ’23 were named to the YAIAA Division IV All-Star first team, and Gage Zimmerman ’24 received honorable mention.

2022-23 Girls’ Basketball The Squirettes (25-4, 12-0 YAIAA IV) continued their recent run of dominance within division play. They captured their sixth consecutive division crown and upped their winning streak in division play to 60 games. They also have an active home winning streak of 49 straight, made more impressive by the inclusion of eight wins in the district playoffs and three in state playoff contests.

After graduating six seniors in 2022, all of whom went on to play at the college level, a young team gelled quickly. Their only loss in the season’s first 23 contests came to a Class 6A state playoff participant from the previous season. The Squirettes reached the 20-win plateau for the 20th time in 24 seasons under head coach Gerry Eckenrode. Megan Jacoby ’25 was named YAIAA Division IV Player of the Year by the league’s coaches. Reece Meckley ’26 joined her on the all-division first team, while Brielle Baughman ’24 was on the second team, and Kaitlyn Schwarz ’24 received honorable mention.

2022-23 Wrestling The Squires (3-15, 2-4 YAIAA III) picked up a win against East Pennsboro in December’s Snacktown Duals at Hanover, and got league victories over York Tech and Fairfield in January.

Individually, Austin Gregg ’25 won the 152-pound weight class at East Pennsboro’s season opening Big Cat Brawl. Isaac Roth ’23 was the runner-up at 172 pounds. Colby Noel ’24 placed seventh at 127 pounds, and Gregg finished eighth at 145 pounds in the District 3 Class 2A Section 1 Championships.

2023 Baseball The Squires (13-9, 11-4 YAIAA IV) captured their second straight YAIAA Division IV title, in part, by opening league play on a seven-game winning streak. Their division crown qualified them for the YAIAA tournament. In the semifinals, they turned the tables on Bermudian Springs with a 3-0 win after dropping the regular season meeting. They were tied with Susquehannock after five innings in the championship game before a big sixth from the Warriors put the game out of reach. In the District 3 Class 2A semifinal, Delone Catholic went on the road and locked up in a pitchers’ duel with top-seeded Halifax. The Wildcats scratched out a single run in the bottom of the seventh for a 1-0 win ending the Squires’ season. Head coach Jimmy Smith ’82 was named YAIAA Division IV Coach of the Year. Aidan Wittmer ’24 (pitcher), Brodie Collins ’23 (catcher), Trent Giraffa ’23 (infielder), and Brady Dettinburn ’24 (outfielder) were all named first-team all-stars, and Denver Ostrum ’24 received honorable mention.

SCAN CODE AND STAY UP TO DATE! 2023 Boys’ Lacrosse The Squires (2-13, 1-12 YAIAA I) dropped a 6-5 decision at KennardDale on Apr. 13. Less than 24 hours later, they returned home and got in the win column with a 9-6 victory against York Suburban. They also closed out the season with a 14-2 win over Mifflin County.

2023 Boys’ Tennis The Squires (4-7, 1-6 YAIAA II) picked up wins against York Suburban, York Catholic, Dover, and York Country Day. Collin Kuhn ’26 and Sebastian Fielding ’24 qualified for the YAIAA Class 2A Singles Tournament.

Kuhn, the fifth seed, reached the quarterfinals before bowing out. The duo also was the third-seeded pairing in the league doubles tournament and reached the quarterfinals.

2023 Softball The Squirettes (14-7, 12-4 YAIAA IV) grabbed a piece of their 10th YAIAA division title in the last 11 seasons, and they earned the Division IV berth in the YAIAA tournament thanks to a season sweep of co-champion Fairfield. They put together two four-game winning streaks and a three-game run, and did not lose consecutive games during the regular season. Delone Catholic dropped the YAIAA semifinal to Littlestown, and their season ended with a loss to Newport in the District 3 Class 2A semifinal. Amy Anderson ’23 was named YAIAA Division IV Pitcher of the Year by the league’s coaches. Teagan Funkhouser ’25, Olivia Kale ’24, Kat Keller ’24, and Jill Sherdel ’26 all received honorable mention.

2023 Track and Field The Squires (4-2, 4-2 YAIAA III) and Squirettes (5-1, 5-1 YAIAA III) both made strong showings in the regular season. At the District 3 Class 2A Championships, Ryder Noel ’23 led a group of top-10 finishers, placing second in the 100-meter dash. Aden Davis ’23 was the fourth-place finisher in the 1600, and Bryson Kopp ’23 placed eighth in the long jump. Emma Bunty placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles and seventh in the 300-meter hurdles. Fina Mochi ’23 tied for second in the high jump and placed sixth in the pole vault, and Laura Knobloch ’24 came in 10th in the javelin. Noel and Mochi closed out the season with a 16th-place showing in the 100-meter dash and a tie for 23rd in the high jump, respectively, at the PIAA Class 2A Championships. They were joined by Davis as honorable mentions on the YAIAA Track and Field All-Star Team.

Class of 2000 Jim Zinn is being inducted into the DeSales University Athletics Hall of Fame in Center Valley, Pa., as part of the university’s homecoming 2023 festivities. A 2004 graduate of DeSales, he still holds the single season record in three-point percentage at the university.

News Departures

At the end of the 2022-23 school year, Science Department Chair Ruthann Pinkos and Tech Ed Teacher Ted Goeres retired.

In addition, English Chair Nancy Duffy P’13, P’19 and Business/ Information Technology/Math Teacher Ryan Grogg ’00 announced that they would be moving on from Delone Catholic.

Ms. Duffy moving closer to family, and Mr. Grogg returning to a public school position after two years at his alma mater. Prior to these departures, Science Teacher Julie Bowman ’14 left Delone Catholic for a job outside the field of education.

Over the summer, Social Studies Teacher Jennifer Knectmann, World Language Teacher Celia Cuadrado, and Family & Consumer Science Teacher Cora Shields accepted teaching positions at other schools, Math/Science Teacher Barkley Walter ’08 announced his engagement and accepted a teaching position out of the area, and English Teacher Meghan Girroir P’14, P’21 seized the opportunity to move closer to her New England roots. Main Office Administrative Assistant Heather Kehr accepted a position teaching third grade at St. Francis Xavier Catholic School in Gettysburg, Pa. Delone Catholic is grateful for the indelible impact each of these educators has made over many collective years of faithful service to our Squires, and wish the best for them in their future endeavors.

Changes Vacating a teaching position on the math faculty, Rev. John Rudolph, Sr. P’22, P’25 has been appointed as the school’s Director of Athletics.

Mr. Matthew Thomas has left his role as Director of Enrollment and Outreach for a new position on the Advancement team as the Director of Community Engagement.

Arrivals For 2023-24, math and science have been combined into a single department, chaired by Mrs. Candy (Staub) Sneeringer ‘88. The Math and Science Department has welcomed several new and experienced teachers to fill vacancies, as well as an additional science position that has been added to the department. Mrs. Sara (Smith) Aguilar ’10, Ms. Savannah Dawson, and Mrs. Melissa Rectanus joined the Science faculty. Ms. Mary Miller and Ms. Grace Nicosia joined the Math faculty.

Mrs. Mary Martz P’12, P’14, P’17, P’19, P’22, P’26, P’27, who served as a long-term substitute in 2022-23, has been hired as a permanent member of the Sacred Studies faculty.

In the humanities disciplines, Ms. Elizabeth Brennan and Ms. Gabi Cranga ’17 have joined the English faculty, Ms. Emmanuelle Dougé, the World Languages faculty, and Mr. Aaron Urbanski, the Social Studies faculty.

In the fine and practical arts, Delone Catholic welcomes Tech Ed Teacher Tim Tracey. For the fall semester, Ms. Amber Smith will be student teaching in Family & Consumer Science, with cooperating teacher Mrs. Joan Hammond. Ms. Smith will officially join the faculty upon her graduation from Messiah University in December.

Mrs. Amy (Bell) Miller ’05 has joined the Advancement team as the Director of Enrollment, and Mrs. Kathy Sheerer P’22 has assumed the role of Main Office Administrative Assistant.

Delone Catholic Class of 2023 Graduates Offered more than $8.8 million in Scholarships

By Julia T. Fuhrman “You have a diploma, and you have a good day!” With a line inspired by “our wonderful cafeteria ladies,” Salutatorian Arielle Snyder ‘23 finished her speech welcoming fellow Delone Catholic High School Class of 2023 graduates.

Delone Catholic High School held commencement exercises for the Class of 2023 on Friday, May 19, 2023, at 6:30 p.m. on J.T. Flaherty Field. Superintendent of Schools and Secretary of Education for the Diocese of Harrisburg, Mr. Daniel Breen, conferred the diplomas.

The Class of 2023 Valedictorian is Lily Ann Shriner, daughter of Eric ‘96 and Michelle Shriner of Gettysburg. Lily has held many leadership roles during her high school career, including Executive Student Council Treasurer, National Honor Society Treasurer, Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica Vice President, Tri-M Music Honor Society Vice President, and Interact Club CoPresident. She was also a member of the National English Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society. She was a member of the Marching Band, Concert Band, and County Band. Lily has been accepted to Pennsylvania State University Park, George Mason University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Virginia Tech University, and North Carolina State University. She plans on attending the College of William and Mary, majoring in Biology and Marine Science. She hopes to become an environmental researcher traveling the world.

Addressing her classmates, Shriner recollected the time spent freshman year coping with math tests and COVID tests simultaneously. In the time spent in social isolation, Shriner reflected, “Years of our personal evolution was compressed into just a few short months, and I believe we all became better human beings out of this experience.”

Shriner continued the theme of embracing the unexpected, sharing, “From my perspective, life is like a Taco Bell drivethrough. You can plan out everything you want, get to the window, and order perfectly, but the brown paper bag of life you will get is never going to have every taco you want made perfectly. Life without twists and turns would be boring. I will

always remember those times in high school when I wasn’t perfect or took a risk I was unsure of.”

She concluded, “You are miles ahead of the person you were freshman year, and there are countless roads ahead to explore in your future. In the words of Saint Catherine of Siena, ‘Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire.’”

The Class of 2023 Salutatorian is Arielle Kate Snyder, daughter of David and Stephanie Snyder of Hanover. She was the Executive President of the Student Council and the Co-President of the Interact Club. In addition, Arielle was inducted into membership in the National Honor Society, the National English Honor Society, the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, and the Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society. She was also a member of the girls’ volleyball and basketball programs. Arielle has been accepted to York College of Pennsylvania and Shippensburg University. She plans on attending Shippensburg University with an interest in forensic science and has enlisted in the U.S. Army National Guard.

In her speech, Snyder also touched on the uncertainty that characterized the four years of high school for this class, while reminding her classmates, “...let us always keep in mind that Delone Catholic has prepared us to lead, prepared us to serve, and prepared us for life, and these are our roots. The families that supported us, the friends that we made, and the teachers that expanded our minds intellectually and our spirits religiously are the reason that we have such bright futures ahead of us. While what the future holds for us may be unclear, here we learned who we are, who we want to be, and what we believe in.”

In the immediate future, 89 percent of the Class of 2023 will pursue further education at colleges and trade schools, one percent will enter the military, and nine percent will enter the workforce after graduation. 17 percent of the class participated in internships during high school, while another six percent finished vocational training programs. Together, the Class of 2023 performed more than 12,950 hours of service to the community.

Earlier the week of graduation, the Class of 2023 and their families gathered for a Baccalaureate Mass on Tuesday, May 16 at 5:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hanover, Pa. Rev. Michael Reid, the principal celebrant, was joined by many of the priests and deacons of the Adams Deanery. Rev. Samuel Miller, the school’s chaplain, gave the homily, reminding students that they would always have their faith to sustain them no matter where life’s journey takes them. The evening concluded with a celebration for families and guests in the church’s parking lot.

The Senior Awards Ceremony was held on Thursday, May 19, 2023, at 9:15 a.m. in the Lawrence B. (Sonny) Sheppard, Jr. Memorial Gymnasium, with several guests on hand to present scholarships and awards, many of which are available exclusively to graduates of Delone Catholic High School.

Gracie Wildasin earned the Catholic Faith Award, perhaps the school’s highest honor. In her nomination, Campus Minister,

Mrs. Kate Phenicie wrote, “Gracie has a beautiful witness of a young disciple. She is not shy about displaying her desire to follow God and dedication to the Church and strives to do the right thing consistently in her life. I am thrilled to recommend her as a very worthy recipient of the Catholic Faith Award.”
