Looking back on his high school experience, Walter feels that Delone Catholic prepared him well academically. “When I took calculus III at the Naval Academy, there was a lot I had already learned from calculus classes at Delone.”

He hopes to do the same for his students by teaching them to look at math in a new way. “Math is just another language,” he noted. “My goal is to help them translate English into this thing called ‘math.’” He added, “I want them to care more about understanding and learning than about their grades - understanding the material will provide good grades.” His teaching strategy is simple: listening and patience. “Ever since I was a child, I could understand the way other people’s minds worked. I enjoy guiding someone, but first I have to figure out where they are.”

Walter is very positive about his experience at Delone Catholic thus far, noting that he has felt encouraged and supported. “I was given a lot of freedom about how to teach my classes. I was given trust. And I really appreciate that.” Reflecting on Delone Catholic, he stated, “This is an awesome place and I want to be able to share that with people.” Delone Catholic High School inducted its Hall of Honor Class of 2022 during a joyful day-long celebration on Friday, Feb. 11. The five-member class brings the total number of inductees to 35 in seven induction classes. The event began with a school-wide Mass in the Sheppard Gym at which the class’s plaques were blessed. A dinner and induction ceremony was held in the Sheppard Gym Lobby in the evening. After missing the in-person induction last year due to COVID-19 gathering limitations, the Hall of Honor Class of 2021 was also recognized.

Andrew M. Angel '73

Andrew M. Angel ’73 – a three-sport athlete at Delone Catholic, he went on to play football at the University of Rhode Island, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in resource development and urban affairs in 1978. He also earned a master’s degree in applied management from the University of Maryland in 1999. At Delone Catholic, he played on two undefeated football teams, returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown against Cedar Cliff in a 1972 battle of unbeaten teams that clinched the South Central League title. During his senior year, he also helped the boys’ basketball team to a South Central League co-championship and a Central Penn Catholic League title. Professionally, he founded Angel Systems, Inc., a small pest control business which has served throughout the Mid-Atlantic region for over 30 years, and has been recognized for superior service to many of the largest government facilities in the region. Most significantly for Delone Catholic, he founded The John Gastley Scholarship Foundation in 2006, and has served as its chairman since. That organization has raised more than $200,000 to provide a full scholarship to Delone Catholic for students who have been academically successful and demonstrated community involvement. A scholarship recipient has graduated with each Delone Catholic class since 2013, and they have excelled in the classroom, in extracurricular activities, and in the community.

Connie K. Schlak

Connie K. Schlak – a former member of the Delone Catholic faculty, she is also the mother of two Delone Catholic alumni. During her career, which spanned from 1982-2002, she taught Spanish and served as the chair of the Foreign Language Department. She also taught English, Latin, and religion at various times throughout her tenure. She was a demanding teacher, but one whom students loved, and she prepared them well for life after high school. Many of her former students have gone on to careers in education. Outside the classroom, she served as a class moderator, and led the yearbook and Quiz Bowl clubs. She also served as a coach of the varsity golf team from 1990-1994.

Sister Jacquelyn Staub, SSJ

Sister Jacquelyn Staub, SSJ – a beloved colleague who offered her service in countless ways behind the scenes and with little fanfare. She served as the Delone Catholic librarian from the late 1980s until her official retirement in 2011. However, she continued to volunteer in the library every morning from 2011 until 2018, allowing the librarian to take on a part-time teaching schedule. She served as the recording secretary for faculty meetings for years, and served on the TASC (Teachers Assessing Student Concerns) team, for which she also collected data and made reports to the LIU and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She worked diligently to stay current with technology, providing teachers and students access to new resources, and she volunteered to manage the ordering and cataloging of text books, a task which required significant time over the summer. Since moving on from her role at Delone Catholic, she continues to be a presence in the local Catholic community, serving as a volunteer with Sacred Heart Parish, Conewago. Above all, everything she accomplished was marked by conscientiousness, dependability, and kindness.

Mary G. "Trudy" Willet

Mary G. “Trudy” Willet (1927-2011) – a Delone Catholic pioneer, she was the first full-time lay female teacher in the school’s history, serving from 1961-1990. In an era when mothers were often the sole providers of childcare, she was able to work with family members to help care for her children while providing excellent instruction in the classroom to students of all abilities. Her three daughters went on to graduate from Delone Catholic, and following her example, one spent many years as an educator, one was a long-time volunteer and board member at Delone Catholic, and the third has been a coordinator of liturgical ministry in her parish. Mrs. Willet was known for her commitment to encouraging and working with students who struggled in math. She spent countless hours tutoring, both during her career and after her retirement.

One Delone Catholic alumnus in particular credits Mrs. Willet’s teaching style and commitment to showing him that students learn in and can be taught in different ways to unlock concepts for them. He has gone on to a decades-long award-winning career in middle school math, science, special education, and administration, reaching hundreds of students in the southwest United States, partly owing to her influence. After retiring from the classroom, she served as a part-time director of development, working painstakingly in an era before the internet to populate the database of alumni and businesses, growing financial support for the school in the short term, and laying the groundwork for future success in this area.

Mary Ann (Rang) Williams '64

Mary Ann (Rang) Williams ’64 (1946-2017) – spent her time as a student involved in various activities, a practice she continued throughout her life. At Delone Catholic, she was a member of the glee club, operetta, political science club, and Spanish club. She earned a degree in risk management from York College of Pennsylvania in the 1980s, and eventually retired from M&T Capital Corp. as an executive vice president. Her most impactful contributions came in service to her classmates, her parish, and her community. She served as the secretary and treasurer for the Class of 1964 for more than a decade, helping to keep class members in touch and coordinate reunions. She was a member of the Hanover Dutch Days committee, and served her parish in many roles. She was on the building committee and the stewardship committee at St. Joseph Parish, Hanover, and became the first female to serve as the president of the parish council.

Mr. Angel and Sister Jackie and members of their families were in attendance. Mrs. Willet and Mrs. Williams, both posthumous inductees, were represented by members of their families. Mrs. Schlak was unable to attend, but was part of the produced video highlighting all five members of the class.

The members of the Class of 2021 are Barbara A. Buehler, Robert B. Kenworthy ’54, Diane M. (Neiderer) Livelsberger ’65, Donald B. Smith, Sr. ’46, and John W. Smith ’47. Donald B. Smith, Sr. was a posthumous inductee. All four living members of the Class of 2021 were in attendance and were presented with their plaques, and numerous inductees from earlier classes joined to celebrate the new class.

The Hall of Honor inducted its inaugural class in conjunction with the celebration of the school’s 75th Anniversary in 2015. The Hall of Honor recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the school through consistent contribution of time, effort. and/or financial resources or who have improved the school and its reputation through significant professional or community achievements.

The Hall of Honor Nomination Committee invites nominations for the Delone Catholic Hall of Honor Class of 2023. For eligibility requirements, nomination forms, and biographies of previous inductees, please visit delonecatholic.org/ about/school-history/hall-honor. Anyone without access to a computer who wishes to make a nomination may contact the Office of Advancement at 717-637-5969, Ext. 211. Any nominees who were not selected for the Class of 2022 will be considered by the committee for the Class of 2023. Nominations must be received by Sept. 1, 2022 in order to be considered for the Class of 2023. Any nominations received after that date will be considered for the Class of 2024.
