Preparing a New Generation of Servant Leaders in the Trades

Ted Goeres prepares a new generation of servant leaders in the trades

According to the “experts,” Teddy Goeres probably shouldn’t be doing what he’s been doing for his entire career. Despite his humble heart and sometimes chaotic conversations, Goeres rejected what the naysayers predicted and has fashioned quite the teaching career, the last two years of which have been as the Technology Education teacher at Delone Catholic High School.

“Most of my family thought that I would be working in the mill (for my life),” Goeres said. “I was considered mentally challenged.

I knew that I wasn’t. I am super dyslexic, but back in the day, nobody knew what that was. I could fix stuff at a really early age, I could take stuff apart and put it back together.

“What got me through was my special education classes and my strong faith in God,” Goeres continued. “My teacher… she told me, ‘you’d be a really good teacher because you’re always helping everyone else.’ No one in my family had gone to college before I did.

My siblings all went after me, and they said if I could do it, anyone could. Being dyslexic was a good thing because it made me way more determined. I prayed for help. That’s one of the reasons I came to Delone Catholic was to share my religion.”

The students are the better for it. Goeres is a card-carrying journeyman carpenter but has a vast knowledge of parts of many of the trades. He shares expertise in carpentry, electrical, plumbing, and soldering. He also has training in pre-engineering. If he wasn’t teaching, he’d be building things or fixing things.

“I’m not a typical teacher,” Goeres explained. “I like kids to try and figure things out on their own. I see the educational side, but God made us all for different jobs. If you enjoy working with your hands, that’s a good thing. Jesus was a carpenter. How I look at it is you have to find what fits for you. I try to help kids find what they’re passionate about. If you like solving problems, you’ll make a good engineer. But if you like building things, probably the trades will be better for you.”

Right now, careers in the trades are a lucrative option for people who don’t have the desire or the finances to attend a four-year college. According to the National Student Clearinghouse, enrollment in agriculture, construction, and transportation schools has increased by 40 percent. Many of those programs require one year of training at an average cost of $16,000 while a four-year college degree costs an average of $100,000. There currently are hundreds of thousands of open jobs in the trades.

“A big percentage of the Baby Boomers are retiring from the trades,” Goeres said. “So there’s a lot of opportunity for welding, pipe fitters, carpenters, etc. Union jobs are where the money is, but there aren’t a lot of union jobs in this area.”

Goeres said that high school graduates who can get hired by a union shop and then get enrolled in that union’s apprenticeship program can receive college credit for that and almost have enough credits for an associate’s degree after they’ve completed their apprenticeship. The average wage for a high school student who completes an apprenticeship program is between $40,000-$50,000.

“There’s nothing wrong with being an electrician, a pipefitter, or a welder,” Goeres said. “But we shouldn’t quit recognizing the academic side of things. People are smart in a lot of different ways. You need to find your interests and what you’re passionate about.”

Salter Most high school basketball fans who’ve never watched a Delone Catholic girls’ basketball game might be challenged to determine Coach Gerry Eckenrode’s emotional state at any point in the game. It’s difficult to figure out if his Squirettes are winning by a lot or losing by a lot. Safe to say that what you think you see is not necessarily what the coach is thinking.

Truth is, while the 23-year veteran coach has had one of the most successful tenures in the state over the past two decades, he’s often misunderstood because of his focus and intensity once the game tips off. But that’s not the man his players know behind the scenes.

“I’ve always said that as long as we give our best effort, win or lose, that’s all I really look at,” Eckenrode said. “How did we compete?

Did we try to maximize our potential for that night? My teams have lost some games that we played our best, it just wasn’t good enough that night.”

“I have a lot of former players that keep in touch with me,” Eckenrode concluded. “That’s the most rewarding thing…

A coach doesn’t pile up more than 500 victories, four state championships and six district championships without knowing how to navigate the ever-evolving teenage brain. Eckenrode will welcome a new team this coming season after guiding a senior class that compiled a 100-9 record over four years, including that fourth state championship and three district titles.

“I would say that there are kids you can challenge, and then there are other kids you have to have a softer side,” he explained. “I still spend more time, though, for example, on the team I have coming in this year I’m still debating what’s the best approach schematically to maximize their potential. We’re going to have to play a different style than we have the last four years. And we’re going to be more inexperienced and a lot thinner on the bench.

“I think you have to have a balance between the two (challenging and softer side),” Eckenrode went on. “How to have the team mesh together this year is going to be interesting. I’m not sure how it’s going to work out. The biggest issue I will have personally is not comparing this team to the group that just left. I will try to get them to that level, but they’re not the same players. Plus, the group that just left was very self-motivated. Will this group coming in be as self-motivated?”

While winning state championships and seeing your players earn college scholarships to continue their athletic careers at the next level is rewarding, that’s not the most important thing to Eckenrode.

“I have a lot of former players that keep in touch with me,” Eckenrode concluded. “That’s the most rewarding thing… to develop a relationship with those kids, even those who I challenged, and they still keep in touch with me. If I’m not challenging you, it means I don’t care. Once they leave, and they think about it a while, they say, “he wasn’t so bad after all.”

TO SERVE

By Lauren M. Gross In the small town of Jersey Shore, Pa. (nowhere near New Jersey, nowhere near a shore), St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church has stood for more than a century as a beacon for the faithful. Located on the furthest end of the Diocese of Scranton, Jersey Shore is about 130 miles away from Delone Catholic High School.

In this tiny hamlet, Donald C. Price, Jr. a 1962 graduate of Delone Catholic, who along with his wife, Dona, are parents of three Delone Catholic alumni, has made his home and found a church community.

The Prices have been married for “going on 56 years now,” Dona said. They met when Don was being treated for appendicitis and Dona was volunteering at the hospital. Not a Catholic at the time, Dona converted the summer before they married.

At St. Luke’s, they’re involved deeply in the daily life of the parish. Dona is a cantor, a member of the adult choir and the Director of Religious Education, overseeing 35 students in grades K-8.

Don serves as what Father Burt Kozen calls “an altar pappy” – a grown-up altar server – and a sacristan. He had wanted to be an altar server his whole life. Then he became an extraordinary minister of communion, and now serves for daily Mass.

“I just love being an altar server,” Don said.

“The church is our life, to tell you the Gospel truth. Our kids aren’t here, they aren’t in the area. We spend our time with church and church people. It’s just what we like to do, serve the Lord in any way we can,” Dona said.

Don attends daily Mass on Mondays and Fridays: the only days they have daily Mass at St. Luke’s.

“I feel like we get more involved with people; it really helped us to get to know them a lot more, and get involved with the community,” Don said.

“Don is correct, it does connect us to the people of the parish but there is more to it. We have been blessed with a good life, we have three wonderful daughters, Dana, Dora and Jenn (all of whom went to Annunciation B.V.M. School and Delone Catholic), who brought us three great sons (in-law) and blessed us with five terrific grandchildren. We wanted to give back and find it a true blessing to serve the Lord through the church. When Father Kozen asked me to be the DRE I thought I was not smart enough but he asked me to pray about it and I couldn’t say no. This is my eighth year,” Dona said.

Don feels so blessed that he can serve the Lord that he never says no when asked to help, she added.

“We both begin each day with the daily Mass readings and prayer. I have been journaling my thoughts on the Mass readings since 1987 and find it a blessing. I’m an avid reader and have read the Bible daily since the age of 13 and have read the entire Bible more than seven times.

“We both have a great love of the Lord our God and find our greatest joy in serving him. We have been blessed with so much we feel the desire to do whatever we can for God and his people. Our faith and God are first in our life and in our marriage,” she said.

Prepared For Life After the four years at Delone Catholic High School come to an end, our students are prepared for life as they go forth to be “Doers of the Word.” Delone Catholic students are challenged to know Jesus Christ and take Him with them as they distinguish their callings in life and excel in whatever they are called to do.

By Stephanie R. Leader The six siblings of the Ugarte family: Roberto, Isabela Greenholt, Antonio, Armando, Mateo, and Eduardo, all graduated from Delone Catholic from 2011-2021. Each has shared their talents to better the world in their fields. Through their adventures, their faith and Catholic identity have guided them in education and the workforce.

The eldest of the Ugarte siblings, Roberto ’11, has been called to study and practice law. A graduate of Saint Joseph’s University, he went on to obtain his Juris Doctor degree. He is now a lawyer licensed to practice in Pennsylvania, and soon Maryland.

Antonio ’15 attended the Catholic University of America where he obtained a degree in architecture, followed by a Master of Architecture degree concentrating in sacred space and cultural studies, and is now pursuing professional licensure while working as an architectural designer in the Washington D.C., area.

Isabela ’13 was called to the healthcare profession. She knew since high school that she was passionate about working in medicine. She attended Loyola University in Baltimore, Md. where she earned her bachelor’s degree. Upon graduation, she found that she wanted to attend the physician assistant program at Salus University, and now lives and works in Adams County Younger brothers Armando ’17, Mateo ’19, and Eduardo ’21 have also been called to serve in the medical field. Armando graduated from Loyola with his degree in biology and has worked as a medical assistant at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore, Md. He intends to start medical school in the fall of 2022 at the Edward Via School of Osteopathic Medicine. Mateo is currently attending Villanova University where he is pursuing a degree in biology on the pre-med track, and Eduardo is also attending Loyola, where he studies biology on the pre-health track.

Like many high school graduates, the path each family member wanted to take was not always clear-cut, but dedication

to learning afforded them all a sense of direction. “The funny thing about goals is that they are constantly changing,” Antonio said. Antonio’s architectural career has taken him to many unexpected places, internationally to multiple countries, and has had his work reviewed by many worldrenowned architects. For Roberto, he was unsure where life might take him after graduation. Once becoming established in his law career, he remained close to his hometown of Hanover, where he was able to connect with many local professionals, including several Delone Catholic alumni.

For Isabela, she credits Delone Catholic for how she was prepared for effective leadership and learning the value of service in the community. “The things I learned, admittedly failed at, and practiced daily at Delone prepared me for college, my career, and my family life today,” she said. “Delone Catholic taught me time management skills, critical thinking skills, practicing self-discipline, and the importance of practicing my faith.”

Mateo agrees that the time management skills he learned while attending Delone Catholic prepared him for higher education. “Having teachers who challenged me in high school was vital to developing good work habits and learning how to balance school with life,” he said.

Antonio believes that the open class discussions and debates prepared him for the interactions to come in higher education. “Delone gave me the foundation and principles upon which to build a higher education,” he said. He noted that he was given the tools needed to think critically, question subject matter, and not be afraid to raise a discussion.

All six of the Ugarte siblings have similar advice for recent or soon-to-be graduates of Delone Catholic. Do not take for granted your education, get as involved as you can, and be thankful that God gave you the gift of Catholic schooling.

“Ultimately, don’t forget to enjoy the time you have and make as many memories as possible; you’ll never get this time back,” Eduardo said.

As Roberto, Isabela, Antonio, Armando, Mateo, and Eduardo are each prepared for life, they always remember to fall back on their faith.

“I believe my faith will be instrumental in my future career as a physician because I will use my faith every day in my words and actions in caring for others,” Armando said.

“A person’s faith is the foundation of everything they do,” Antonio said. He recalled a quote from St. Francis de Sales which he believes fully envelops Delone Catholic’s motto “Be Doers of the Word”: “Great occasions for serving God come seldom, but little ones surround us daily.”

STUDENT Profile

After they walk across the stage, newly capped and gowned graduates of Delone Catholic High School, many members of the Class of 2022 will travel to college. Some will stay local, some will stay in-state but be farther away, and some will leave the state.

None will travel farther than Lucy Matson, who has been accepted to Aberystwyth University, on the west coast of Wales. Her college experience will be thousands of miles from home, in a country with different customs and traditions, and no easy way to pop home for a long weekend.

By Lauren M. Gross Lucy is looking forward to it with excitement. In addition to graduating from Delone Catholic this spring, she will graduate from Carroll Community College with an associate’s degree in arts and sciences.

In Wales, she plans to major in wildlife conservation. “Wildlife conservation is a very rare major in the United States; there are only about 20 schools in the U.S. that offer it, and it’s geared more towards fish and game or zoology,” she explained.

“My ultimate goal is to get a graduate degree in primatology. I hope to work with chimpanzees,” she added.

As for why Aberystwyth? “Wales just seemed interesting,” she said. She has been to Europe and wants to go back, and she loves to travel. During quarantine, she Google-searched for colleges in Wales.

Since middle school, she has planned to get her associate’s degree through a dual enrollment opportunity that Delone Catholic afforded her to save money. She has worked hard, and for the Fall 2021 semester, she made Dean’s List. Currently, she is on track to graduate with the highest level of honors due to her GPA. In the fall semester, she worked at Carroll Community College as a tutor. This year, the school started a new program called dedicated tutoring. The program assigns a tutor to every introductory statistics class. The tutor runs weekly review sessions with the class or section to which they are assigned. The failure rate for statistics is higher than some of the other classes, so the goal of the program is to lower the failure rate and to provide additional support to those who are struggling.

Various students and employees who have taken this class, or who have a strong background in statistics, were asked to participate.

Lucy took statistics over the summer and earned an A in the course. Her professor then recommended her to this program as she was one of the highest-achieving members in his class.

She was offered the job and was given two dual enrollment sections of statistics. She works with a section from South Carroll High School and a section from Winters Mill High School. It’s one of the ways Delone Catholic has prepared her for life.

At Aberystwyth, she will join a student body of more than 8,000 students studying across three academic disciplines and 17 departments.

“The school has a very global mindset. Their alumni are doing amazing things. There are a lot of fieldwork classes,” she said, adding that she will be able to study in Borneo for a year, working with chimpanzees, getting hands-on fieldwork experience.

The town itself is a small beach town, geared towards conservation. Beyond that, the program itself “ticked all the boxes,” she said.

The application process was easy, and her tuition is less expensive, even as an international student, than she would get at an in-state school in Maryland.

She received an inclusive accommodation scholarship, which means she’ll have free room for her time at the school.

Her parents, she said, are happy for her with the amazing opportunity the school offers, but are sad and will miss her. Her classes don’t start until mid-October, and run through mid-June. She’ll leave on Sept. 10.

Although her associate’s degree classes don’t transfer, American applicants to the school need to have either two college classes or two Advanced Placement® classes with scores of 3 or higher. Lucy more than meets those benchmarks, but her associate’s degree made her a better candidate for application.

“Delone Catholic has always had a higher expectation for educational greatness, this can be seen in our grading policy. Universities in the U.K. are a bit more rigorous than schools in the U.S. Because there are no general education courses in U.K. programs, the University needs American students to go above and beyond in their high school education in order to prove that they are ready for a British university. Delone Catholic’s many AP and Honors courses have given me that opportunity. Staff such as Mrs. Tompkins are also very supportive, and I was allowed to only take 6 credits this year as opposed to 6.5 in order to make time for my college courses. The high expectations have helped to cement the self-discipline which has already been instilled in my life. This allowed me to succeed in my dual enrollment courses to prove that I am ready for a British university. The Virtual High School courses offered

by Delone Catholic have also allowed me to take courses related to my major as well. Becoming a high-achieving student at Delone Catholic made it so that I had faith that I could be successful in a British school. Being the Vice President of the International Club and befriending exchange students has also been very helpful in taking this step,” she added.

For the Love of Ocean Life...

- Brooke Perkins ’19

By Stephanie R. Leader When Brooke Perkins ’19, at just three years old, saw the Pixar movie “Finding Nemo” for the first time, she was introduced to what would become her calling. A fascination, love, and appreciation for marine life and animals blossomed. That love followed her into her academic career at Delone Catholic High School, and now as a marine science major and biology minor at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, S.C. A junior, Perkins is fully exemplifying what it means to be a “Doer of the Word.”

While at Delone Catholic, Perkins said she took advantage of every science class that she could take. Her biology, chemistry, and air and space science courses specifically prepared her for what would be her major in college.

Perkins became involved in many clubs and activities that Delone Catholic has to offer. She was a Squire Ambassador and a member of the Environmental Club that began her senior year. In addition to her involvement in academic clubs, athletics was a huge part of her high school experience. Throughout her years at Delone Catholic, Perkins played softball and basketball and was a member of the Athletic Training Club. She was also manager of JV and varsity football and wrestling all four years.

“All of the clubs and activities that I was a part of definitely prepared me for the work and school balance,” said Perkins. “I learned from everybody. All the bits of life lessons prepared me fully for college.”

Perkins’ education and involvement hardly stopped inside the classroom. In the summer of 2018, she was one of only 300 delegates chosen to be a part of the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment. “That week that I got to spend there really impacted how my future was shaped,” she recalled.

Upon graduation, when Perkins accepted her admission to Coastal Carolina, she applied to live on what is called “The Sea Floor,” specialty housing for marine science majors. Through her application process, she was one of only 40 students selected to live on that floor. This housing selection afforded her even more environmental and conservation opportunities to get involved within her university. She became an Eco-Rep Leader with Sustain Coastal, where she works to promote environmental activities and sustainable living on campus. Additionally, she is involved with the Coastal Sea Turtle Club. “I have always loved animals,” said Perkins. “That turned into a love of the environment and conservation as well.”

Perkins is also the current Vice President of Colleges Against Cancer, which hosts Relay for Life, the yearly fundraising event benefitting the American Cancer Society. Perkins will assume the role of President for her senior year. Her interest in Relay for Life began at Delone Catholic, where she participated one year under the guidance of Mrs. Julia Fuhrman. She credits Mrs. Fuhrman as her inspiration for pursuing Colleges Against Cancer after high school.

Amid such a busy day-to-day schedule, Perkins’ faith guides her. When she feels overwhelmed and needs to take time for herself, she visits the on-campus chapel and attends Bible study. She also participates in the Catholic Chants, the on-campus Catholic club. “It’s a driving force behind where I am right now,” she said.

When not at school, Perkins works as a Veterinary Assistant at Gettysburg Animal Hospital where she learns valuable skills in the veterinary field. As far as the future, she wants to expand her knowledge in veterinary work, and perhaps continue her education and obtain a master’s degree. Her dream career involves any type of work at an aquarium. She recently became involved with the Lowcountry Marine Mammal Network as a volunteer and would like to pursue marine rescue and rehabilitation. The sky is the limit for Perkins, and until then, like Dory, the forgetful blue fish of “Finding Nemo” fame says, “just keep swimming.”

NEW Faculty Delone Catholic welcomed five new faculty members for the 2021-22 academic year, each bringing fresh perspectives and new talents to an already outstanding faculty.

Julie Bowman Julie Bowman ’14 never thought of herself as a “science person.”

I was more of a ‘nature person,’” she said. An Earth Science class at Delone Catholic with Ms. Ruthann Pinkos (Science Department Chair) first sparked her interest in science. Ms. Pinkos told the class that, following the current trajectory, the Earth would run out of fresh water by 2050. “She challenged the class to do something about a problem that our generation would have to face.”

Not until her senior year at Delone Catholic, however, did Bowman decide to choose science as a career path. She noticed that she felt close to God in nature and discerned that she could stay close to God by working in natural science. She graduated from Kutztown University in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science, pursuing tracks in biology and geology, and found employment as a Resident Environmental Biologist at an environmental biology manufacturing company with tri-state operations. In explaining science to a colleague and presenting data to her supervisors, she discovered that she liked teaching and talking about science. By 2021, she was ready to make a career change and joined Delone Catholic’s faculty, teaching Biology I and II and Anatomy and Physiology.

As a new teacher, Bowman admitted, “I was nervous, but I had so many mentors. The community would do anything to support one another.” She was encouraged to try new things and was reassured that, if it didn’t work out, that was okay. “Coming here, you can relax and let your light shine.”

Looking back on high school, Bowman credits Delone Catholic with providing a knowledge base in faith that prevented her from losing her way. She believes her mission at Delone Catholic is to ensure that its education continues to be rooted in faith. She does so by teaching her students that faith in God and respect for life are the starting points for scientific inquiry.

“Biology is the study of life. Honoring and respecting life is the key takeaway.” Recognizing that the arguments most destructive to faith often make scientific claims, she hopes to equip her students with a true scientific knowledge that will help them to defend their faith. Looking ahead, she would like to see upperlevel science classes geared to non-science majors that show the interconnectedness of chemistry, biology, and physics. Her goal: “I want every student to love science.”

Ryan Grogg

Celia Cuadrado A self-described wanderer, Celia Cuadrado followed a varied and interesting career path leading from Madrid, Spain to McSherrystown, Pa. Born and raised in Madrid, Cuadrado grew up bilingual, attending a French school. An early interest in world languages and cultures brought some unexpected adventures. As a foreign exchange student, she found herself in the USSR during the time of its collapse. “When I got there, I was in Leningrad; when I left, it was called St. Petersburg,” she remarked about that exciting and somewhat frightening time.

After graduating from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid with an undergraduate degree in business, she worked in Spain for a French real estate company, spending vacations in Italy, studying her passion - Italian art and culture. At the request of her employer, she added English to her language skill set, which led to a move to Florida where she raised her three children.

In Florida, she continued her education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in French and an Master of Arts in linguistics from Florida International University, followed by a master’s degree in library science from the University of South Florida and employment, for several years, as a librarian serving the Spanish community.

Cuadrado’s teaching career began almost accidentally after she was asked to serve as a substitute teacher at her son’s K-12 school. She soon gained a permanent position teaching Spanish and French. When her daughter moved to South Central Pennsylvania, Cuadrado pulled up roots again to join her, eventually teaching Spanish language arts at the Vida Charter School in Gettysburg, Pa., and earning her teaching certificate for Spanish and French. Encouraged by a parent at the charter school, she became a lecturer at Mount St. Mary’s University, teaching Spanish and Italian. In 2021, she chose to come to Delone Catholic, where she felt there was more opportunity for growth than in the university setting.

“I love it here,” she said about her experience at Delone Catholic. “The students are very enthusiastic about learning.” She believes learning a new language opens students’ minds to critical thinking. Her goal for her students is to prepare them for a global world.

Her approach is multi-disciplinary; assignments interweave Spanish with religion, technology, and history.

Cuadrado attributes the interesting path her life has taken so far to her desire to be of service. “God is my boss,” she explained, “I serve him by sharing my talents.”

Ryan Grogg ’00, comes to Delone Catholic with an impressive level of education and teaching experience. A 2000 Delone Catholic graduate, Grogg earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Shippensburg University in 2005, with a major in elementary education, a minor in coaching and a concentration in mathematics. In 2010, he received a master’s degree in educational development and strategies from Wilkes University, earning an additional 60 graduate credits beyond the degree requirements.

Before joining Delone Catholic’s faculty, he taught a variety of subjects, predominantly mathematics, for more than 15 years in grades 5, 7, and 8. Grogg has also put his minor in coaching to use, coaching youth basketball and, from 2006-2010, coaching football at Delone Catholic.

Reflecting on his goals as a teacher, Grogg said, “I want my students to be successful and learn something they can apply to real life.

I want them to see that there is much more out there than what they are learning in the classroom.” As the head of, and sole faculty member in, the business department, Grogg realizes the road ahead will be both challenging and exciting as he seeks to expand the course offerings of the department. Responding to student demand, he is hoping soon to offer courses in entrepreneurship and sports marketing. For any student contemplating a career in business, he believes that accounting classes are a necessary foundation. Optimally, however, he would like to see all students at Delone Catholic take some business classes. He observes that to be properly prepared for life, at a minimum, each student should have a familiarity with computers, personal finance, and investing.

Commenting on joining the faculty of a school in which he had been a student, Grogg said that it was like coming home. “I wanted to come back because I had a great experience in high school. When I got here, I just loved it.” He noted that now there are even greater opportunities for students to express and practice their faith than during his time as a student. “Kids are blessed to be here.” Grogg sums up his first year teaching at Delone Catholic so far as “wonderful.” He described the community as very open and accepting. “It’s nice to come to a situation where you are welcome from the very beginning.”

NEW Faculty

Andrew Pizzirusso Andrew Pizzirusso, or “Mr. P,” as he is popularly known, has been involved in both art and running for a good portion of his life. He began running in fourth grade, continuing to run distance events for his college team in cross country and track and field. His interest in art led him to take graphic design courses throughout his four yearsat Strath Haven High School in Wallingford, Pa. But as he was considering his career options he realized, particularly from his experience as a summer camp counselor, that he also liked helping others. “I’ve always liked working with kids and guiding their development into young adulthood,” he noted.

He attributes this impulse to being raised in a family that viewed service to others as a natural extension of its Catholic faith. Contemplating how to best combine his talents and interests, he decided to explore teaching. In 2021, he graduated from Elizabethtown College with a Bachelor of Science in fine arts education and a minor in graphic design. A year of student teaching as preparation for his degree convinced him that he had made the right decision.

Pizzirusso chose Delone Catholic to begin his teaching career because of its small, close-knit environment. “It’s more like a family,” he observed. “Everyone has been really friendly, really helpful with questions and concerns.”

Pizzirusso brings to his new position exciting plans for the Art Department as well as for the students in his classes. He envisions his art classroom expanding into an art wing, where student artwork would be on display for the entire school community. Of his students he acknowledged, “I know they won’t all become artists, but I want them all to learn to think more creatively. I want to open their minds to different ideas and to outside-the-box thinking.” He noted that the study of art can be a door to many different career paths, from pure art to marketing to computer science and thus hopes to integrate more technology into his graphic design classes. As a recent graduate, he is familiar with the newest technologies and trends in his field. “I feel like I bring an outside perspective to the school because of my different experiences.” Above all, he noted, “I hope to make a difference.”

Barkley Walter When Barkley Walter ’08 was a student at Delone Catholic, he did not have a teaching career in mind. “In high school, I wanted to be a Navy SEAL,” he admitted. After graduating from Delone Catholic, he enlisted in the Navy, entering its nuclear engineering program. He attended the Naval Academy Preparatory School for a year and was accepted into the Naval Academy, majoring in pure mathematics.

After graduation in 2014, as an officer in the Navy, he was stationed in San Diego serving on two ships during his five-year tenure. On the first, he qualified as a surface warfare officer; on the second, he was in charge of navigation and supervised 280 engineers.

Despite his success, Walter began to discern that a naval career was not the right path for him. Unsure of what to do next after leaving military service in 2019, he began working as a contractor, training new Naval officers to drive ships. He discovered both that he liked teaching and that he wanted to be nearer to family in Pennsylvania. He contacted his high school geometry teacher, Vice Principal Donna Tompkins, and soon became a new hire, teaching Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and Geometry.

Looking back on his high school experience, Walter feels that Delone Catholic prepared him well academically. “When I took calculus III at the Naval Academy, there was a lot I had already learned from calculus classes at Delone.”

He hopes to do the same for his students by teaching them to look at math in a new way. “Math is just another language,” he noted. “My goal is to help them translate English into this thing called ‘math.’” He added, “I want them to care more about understanding and learning than about their grades - understanding the material will provide good grades.” His teaching strategy is simple: listening and patience. “Ever since I was a child, I could understand the way other people’s minds worked. I enjoy guiding someone, but first I have to figure out where they are.”

Walter is very positive about his experience at Delone Catholic thus far, noting that he has felt encouraged and supported. “I was given a lot of freedom about how to teach my classes. I was given trust. And I really appreciate that.” Reflecting on Delone Catholic, he stated, “This is an awesome place and I want to be able to share that with people.”

Delone Catholic High School inducted its Hall of Honor Class of 2022 during a joyful day-long celebration on Friday, Feb. 11. The five-member class brings the total number of inductees to 35 in seven induction classes. The event began with a school-wide Mass in the Sheppard Gym at which the class’s plaques were blessed. A dinner and induction ceremony was held in the Sheppard Gym Lobby in the evening. After missing the in-person induction last year due to COVID-19 gathering limitations, the Hall of Honor Class of 2021 was also recognized.

Members of the Class of 2022 are: Andrew M. Angel ’73 – a three-sport athlete at Delone Catholic, he went

on to play football at the University of Rhode Island, from which he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in resource development and urban affairs in 1978. He also earned a master’s degree in applied management from the University of Maryland in 1999. At Delone Catholic, he played on two undefeated football teams, returning the opening kickoff for a touchdown against Cedar Cliff in a 1972 battle of unbeaten teams that clinched the South Central League title. During his senior year, he also helped the boys’ basketball team to a South Central League co-championship and a Central Penn Catholic League title. Professionally, he founded Angel Systems, Inc., a small pest control business which has served throughout the Mid-Atlantic region for over 30 years, and has been recognized for superior service to many of the largest government facilities in the region. Most significantly for Delone Catholic, he founded The John Gastley Scholarship Foundation in 2006, and has served as its chairman since. That organization has raised more than $200,000 to provide a full scholarship to Delone Catholic for students who have been academically successful and demonstrated community involvement. A scholarship recipient has graduated with each Delone Catholic class since 2013, and they have excelled in the classroom, in extracurricular activities, and in the community.

Connie K. Schlak – a former member of the Delone Catholic faculty, she

is also the mother of two Delone Catholic alumni. During her career, which spanned from 1982-2002, she taught Spanish and served as the chair of the Foreign Language Department. She also taught English, Latin, and religion at various times throughout her tenure. She was a demanding teacher, but one whom students loved, and she prepared them well for life after high school. Many of her former students have gone on to careers in education.

Outside the classroom, she served as a class moderator, and led the yearbook and Quiz Bowl clubs. She also served as a coach of the varsity golf team from 1990-1994.

Sister Jacquelyn Staub, SSJ – a beloved colleague who offered her ser-

vice in countless ways behind the scenes and with little fanfare. She served as the Delone Catholic librarian from the late 1980s until her official retirement in 2011. However, she continued to volunteer in the library every morning from 2011 until 2018, allowing the librarian to take on a part-time teaching schedule. She served as the recording secretary for faculty meetings for years, and served on the TASC (Teachers Assessing Student Concerns) team, for which she also collected data and made reports to the LIU and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She worked diligently to stay current with technology, providing teachers and students access to new resources, and she volunteered to manage the ordering and cataloging of text books, a task which required significant time over the summer. Since moving on from her role at Delone Catholic, she continues to be a presence in the local Catholic community, serving as a volunteer with Sacred Heart Parish, Conewago.

Above all, everything she accomplished was marked by conscientiousness, dependability, and kindness.

Mary G. “Trudy” Willet (1927-2011) – a Delone Catholic pioneer, she

was the first full-time lay female teacher in the school’s history, serving from 1961-1990. In an era when mothers were often the sole providers of childcare, she was able to work with family members to help care for her children while providing excellent instruction in the classroom to students of all abilities. Her three daughters went on to graduate from Delone Catholic, and following her example, one spent many years as an educator, one was a long-time volunteer and board member at Delone Catholic, and the third has been a coordinator of liturgical ministry in her parish. Mrs. Willet was known for her commitment to encouraging and working with students

who struggled in math. She spent countless hours tutoring, both during her career and after her retirement. One Delone Catholic alumnus in particular credits Mrs. Willet’s teaching style and commitment to showing him that students learn in and can be taught in different ways to unlock concepts for them. He has gone on to a decades-long award-winning career in middle school math, science, special education, and administration, reaching hundreds of students in the southwest United States, partly owing to her influence. After retiring from the classroom, she served as a part-time director of development, working painstakingly in an era before the internet to populate the database of alumni and businesses, growing financial support for the school in the short term, and laying the groundwork for future success in this area.

Mary Ann (Rang) Williams ’64 (1946-2017) – spent her time as a student involved in various activities, a practice she continued throughout

her life. At Delone Catholic, she was a member of the glee club, operetta, political science club, and Spanish club. She earned a degree in risk management from York College of Pennsylvania in the 1980s, and eventually retired from M&T Capital Corp. as an executive vice president. Her most impactful contributions came in service to her classmates, her parish, and her community. She served as the secretary and treasurer for the Class of 1964 for more than a decade, helping to keep class members in touch and coordinate reunions. She was a member of the Hanover Dutch Days committee, and served her parish in many roles. She was on the building committee and the stewardship committee at St. Joseph Parish, Hanover, and became the first female to serve as the president of the parish council.

Mr. Angel and Sister Jackie and members of their families were in attendance. Mrs. Willet and Mrs. Williams, both posthumous inductees, were represented by members of their families. Mrs. Schlak was unable to attend, but was part of the produced video highlighting all five members of the class.

Smith, Sr. was a posthumous inductee. All four living members of the Class of 2021 were in attendance and were presented with their plaques, and numerous inductees from earlier classes joined to celebrate the new class.

The Hall of Honor inducted its inaugural class in conjunction with the celebration of the school’s 75th Anniversary in 2015.

The Hall of Honor recognizes individuals who have made a significant contribution to the school through consistent contribution of time, effort. and/or financial resources or who have improved the school and its reputation through significant professional or community achievements.

In Memoriam

Sister Nivarda Filip, SCC 1927-2021

William M. Grandia II 1955-2021 Rev. Andrew P. Marinak 1928-2021

Affectionately known to his students and colleagues as Mr. G., William M. Grandia II taught technology education at Delone Catholic from 1991 until his retirement in 2017, and he was still a driver education instructor at the time of his sudden death on Dec. 23, 2021.

Mr. G. was an outstanding educator who needed no public validation, but he received it as a winner of the WGAL Teacher Impact Award during his tenure. He had a unique sense of humor and an ability to connect with students, whether they took his classes or not.

He was known as much for his work outside the classroom as in it. Mr. G. was the unofficial locksmith of Delone Catholic, which was fitting for a man who had the biggest key ring most people will ever see. He also had an incredible ability to always have just the right parts on hand to refurbish, rebuild, recycle, or otherwise reuse technology that to the less-trained eye had no discernable value remaining.

In addition to his unwavering dedication to Delone Catholic and his students, Mr. G. spent his entire life in Scouting. He was an adult leader, and served on the staff at Camp Tuckahoe in Dillsburg for nearly four decades. Mr. G. will be sorely missed by the entire Delone Catholic family and the thousands of students and Scouts whose lives he impacted in immeasurable ways.

SHORTS Cross Country Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams were District 3 caliber squads, with the girls capturing third place at the District meet, while the boys placed fifth. Both teams completed 5-1 YAIAA Division III campaigns led by Liam Allen ’23 and Samantha Smith ’24, who garnered first-team division honors. Smith tied the Squirettes course record at Littlestown, while also capturing 7th place in the District 3 meet. Smith, Allen and Aden Davis also qualified for the state championship meet.

Field Hockey The biggest challenge for Coach Kristi Fields ’87 was competing with no senior leadership for the team. Campbell Zortman ’23, Gracie Wildasin ’23, and Sabrina Harriett ’23 were the team captains, as juniors. Reagan Arigo ’23 earned first team YAIAA honors, while Zortman, Wildasin and Cara Arigo ’23 were named honorable mention. Fields is optimistic about the upcoming campaign because of all of the senior leadership the team will have as well as depth and a talented core of players.

Football The way the season started, it didn’t look like the Squires would continue their streak of consecutive appearances in the District 3 championship game.

But the experience of a baker’s dozen of seniors took an 0-3 start to the season and turned it around, finishing with a 6-1 run to get to a fourth straight District 3 championship game. The Squires captured the silver medal for the fourth year in a row when Steelton-Highspire spoiled the remarkable turnaround.

Next fall looks equally promising because of strength and depth along both the offensive and defensive lines, as well as a quarterback with a season’s experience under his belt. The non-league schedule will be daunting once again with the likes of Trinity, Lancaster Catholic, and Greencastle-Antrim on the slate.

Golf Arguably the most successful fall campaign was staged by the golf team. With only one male and one female senior, the linksters compiled a 28-3 record while capturing the YAIAA Division III team championship. Eight golfers qualified for the YAIAA Championship, and the team also qualified for the District 3 tournament. Individual qualifiers for the District tournament included Bryson Kopp ’23, Tim Burke ’23, Evan Glass ’24, Gino Giraffa ’25, and Kat Keller ’24.

Girls’ Soccer Coach Derf Maitland is typically very reserved, but there was no denying the strength of this year’s squad. Setting a team record of 88 goals on the season and backstopped by center back Emily McCann ’22 and goalie Kallie Gilbart ’22, this Squirrettes’ team earned a 10-7-1 season record, including an appearance in the District 3 playoffs. Maddi O’Brien ’23 set a school record for most goals in a season (25), while also taking over the career goals scored lead with 49. Amy Rupp ’22 was the most improved player tallying 19 goals and 11 assists; this after scoring only two goals with no assists during her first three years in the program.

Boys’ Soccer Coach Austin Groves said that his team’s record wasn’t truly indicative of its ability. The team was competitive in almost every game and lost several in the last minutes. With only three seniors graduating, and with leading goal scorer Aiden Groves ’23 returning, Coach Groves is optimistic going into offseason training and looking ahead to next fall. Groves and Andrew Gervasi ’22 (6 assists) were named first-team YAIAA, while brothers Will ’22 and Wyatt ’22 DiDio were named to the second team.

Girls’ Tennis The Squirettes posted a 7-4 overall record, with their 6-3 mark in YAIAA Division II good for fourth place. Several team members experienced success in the postseason as well.

Olivia Roth and Ella Knox captured the YAIAA Class 2A doubles championship and reached the District 3 quarterfinals before bowing out.

Roth also placed fourth in the YAIAA Class 2A singles tournament.

Girls’ Volleyball This squad continued its run of consistent excellence. With a 15-6 overall record and a run to the District 3 semifinals, coach Nate Staub kept this group of Squirettes a team to be reckoned with. Makenna Mummert ’22 and Campbell Chronister ’24 both were selected to the YAIAA first team, and both also received District 3 recognition with Mummert earning first-team accolades. Olivia Snyder ’22 also made first-team District 3, while Mummert capped her season with first-team all-state honors.
