The Squire A magazine for the alumni, parents, and friends of Delone Catholic High School Vol. 1 Fall | 2021
That’s the Way We’ve Always Done It In the best-selling business book, Who Moved My Cheese, four fictional characters -- Sniff, Scurry, Hem, and Haw – are faced with the same predicament: Each day the four venture into the maze in a quest to find cheese. As the story goes, the four discovered a motherlode of cheese, but when the cheese disappears, the four characters had differing solutions to the problem. Sniff and Scurry went on an adventure in the maze to discover a new cheese source. Hem and Haw were slow to come around. Hem eventually rejected his uncertainty and his belief that change will harm you. He decided to venture out and happened upon Sniff and Scurry and their new stash. Haw remained stuck in his belief that change is bad. We have a new Principal (William Lippe), five new teachers, and for the first time in at least five years, we will begin the school year with more students than we concluded the previous year. Additionally, we were blessed to see an increase of 24 percent in philanthropic support. And, yes, Delone Today has a new name, a new tagline, and a new look. The Squire will continue to provide the plethora of information you’ve been accustomed to in a variety of ways. This coincides with our vision to ensure that Delone Catholic is at the forefront of faith formation, rigorous academic pursuits, and is a contributing member of our community. Imagine what you can accomplish if you’re not afraid.

TO LEAD “Priests don’t think they’ll be good at administration,” said Rev. Dwight Schlaline ‘00, the new pastor at The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. “You don’t come into this (the priesthood) with that as a goal. “It’s eye-opening, once you’re the pastor,” Fr. Schlaline continued. “The first time I became a pastor, it opened up my world to what it means to be in charge of things. It’s a totally different perspective when you’re in charge of things – a lot more responsibility.”
The Right Man at the Right Time
No one really prepares priests to be pastors, at least not in the business sense. Most parishioners would assume that a priest is wholly prepared for his spiritual duties. Being a pastor, however, is combining two full-time jobs: Spiritual leader and CEO. Who trains pastors on how to develop and maintain a budget for the parish; how to be observant of and remedy any problems with the physical plant of the church; how to be the chief fundraising officer for the parish? If you’re blessed to be a pastor that also has a school, you can add all of the responsibilities for the school to those for the church. It’s a recipe for burnout. Fortunately, Fr. Schlaline saw a promotion coming back in 2014 and he sought a way to educate himself and to prepare himself for his new duties. He discovered the Pastor’s Toolbox conference offered by the Leadership Roundtable, a national organization that partners with
“I have to be the pastor of everyone.” That’s the vibe I’m trying to put out, especially in this divisive time.” Catholic leaders on all things regarding management and leadership development. Fr. Schlaline said that the knowledge he gained on human resource law and finance were two key areas. “I’m much more comfortable now,” Fr. Schlaline said. “I see things that need to be done and I know that I have to do them. When you’re a young priest, you want everyone to like you. But that fantasy has to die. Somebody’s not going to like it, someone will complain, whatever you do. It’s impossible for ME to make everyone happy. “I have to be the pastor of everyone,” Fr. Schlaline went on. “That’s the vibe I’m trying to put out, especially in this divisive time.” Fr. Schlaline is back where he started. He comes to Sacred Heart after six years as pastor at Our Lady of Visitation in Shippensburg. That position included the chaplaincy at Shippensburg University.

TO SERVE Delone Catholic High School is a place of vocation, a place of ministry, and a place of employment. For Mr. William Lippe, newly chosen to lead the Squires, it is all three. In his 20s, Mr. Lippe spent time discerning the priesthood. He took what he thought was a temporary leave from his pursuit of formal religious life, only to meet his now-wife Valerie. They are the proud parents of Cecilia ’25, and Christopher and Catherine, who are in the sixth- and fifth- grade, respectively. His deep devotion to the Catholic faith is evident in everything he does at Delone Catholic. In early August, he brought priests and deacons from all the local partner and supporting parishes into the school for lunch and fellowship.
Mr. William Lippe, P‘25 Principal
Over a catered luncheon, he welcomed the men to Delone Catholic – or welcomed them back, as several of them are alumni of the school – and invited them to come to the school as often as their schedules permit. “We will be importunate in asking for your time and gifts in our school and to our young people,” he warned them. “The importance of their witness cannot be understated,” he said. “Our young men need to see godly men and envision themselves in that role. Our young ladies, too, need to have these godly men as examples as they potentially discern religious life.“Being in a Catholic educational setting means raising our young people up within the rich teachings and traditions of the Roman Catholic faith, inviting and encouraging their unique abilities. We are all given talents by God that we are called to use for the greater good of the Holy Church, but not all of our talents are the same, and we should honor that,” he said.
“That said, we are entering an age of the laity, and responsibility falls to us. We need to build up a Catholic culture,” he added. He wasted no time in fulfilling that promise. On Tuesday, Aug. 24 – the Feast of St. Bartholomew, Apostle – Delone Catholic High School opened its school year, seeking the Lord’s blessing, with a school-wide Mass celebrated not only by our own Chaplain, Fr. Samuel Miller, but with Fr. Richard Lyons and Fr. Aaron Lynch as well. Deacon Tom Aumen ’71, P’00, P’02, P’09 and Deacon Chris Livelsberger ’83 assisted at this concelebrated liturgy, while Mr. Brendan McCall P’25, a member of our religious studies faculty, served as acolyte and a faculty choir led everyone in song. One of Mr. Lippe’s goals is to foster a culture that promotes student success while honoring their different abilities and talents. “Being in a Catholic educational setting means raising our young people up within the rich teachings and traditions of the Catholic Faith, inviting and encouraging their unique abilities. We are all given talents by God that we are called to use in building up the kingdom, but not all of our talents are the same, and we should honor that,” he said.

FOR LIFE Graduation The Class of
2021
In a year when so many things weren’t normal, the Delone Catholic High School Class of 2021 celebrated its graduation in an almost normal way. Although attendance was limited, both due to COVID-19 restriction and physical space limitations, and although students and families had to wear masks, the Class of 2021 graduated together, something that didn’t happen in 2020. On Friday, May 21, 2021, the 92 members of the Class of 2021 walked across the stage, smiled for a photo, and received their diplomas. As is traditional for high school graduations, the diplomas were conferred by Most Rev. Ronald W. Gainer, Bishop of Harrisburg, who exhorted the graduates to use their education as a passport to the wider world. “Today is a day for congratulations and good wishes, a time for giving thanks to God for what has been and a time for renewing trust in God for what is yet to come in each of your lives. This is a time of saying goodbye to your high school years and for embracing the next phase of your lives,” Bishop Gainer said. “Graduating seniors, I truly hold you in high esteem. To say that your senior year was unique would be an understatement. The last months of your junior and this last year were nothing short of extraordinary, with challenges which none of you, and none of us with many more birthdays than you, had ever previously experienced. Your high school experience was unlike any other class before you. But these challenges were met and they were overcome. “Those difficulties provided you with a good life lesson as you conclude your secondary education and prepare to take on new challenges in life. Challenges can summon forth the best in us, or they can make us want to give up, to collapse under the pressure. That did not happen. Your school leaders and teachers and you would not let that happen. Instead you grew through it all and the trials called forth the best in you,” he added.

THE SQUIRE | FALL 2021
Ryan Joseph Murphy was the Class of 2021 Valedictorian. “When we first entered this journey our freshman year, none of us could have imagined what our high school experience would turn out to be. Quicker than we could have thought, we made those experiences and memories and we are ready to move on,” he said. He recounted a moment in the school year when he and his friends were sitting in the cafeteria and decided to do “highs and lows,” where people recount the good parts (highs) and bad parts (lows) of their days. He said that was something that his family had done on vacation, and doing it with his friends further solidified the sense of being a family that exists at Delone Catholic High School. He encouraged his classmates to “aim to be a light to others, and live out our lives the way God intended. Another thing I’ve learned from Delone has been to be comfortable with the uncomfortable. We all need to deal with the fact that life is meant to be an adventure, and every adventure has its highs and lows and can be scary at times. But, going out of our comfort zone and trying new things is the best thing to do.”
The Class of 2021 Salutatorian was Audrey Catherine Sell. Sell addressed her classmates, reminding them how far they’ve come: “We spent the last four years together, navigating our way through high school, attending classes, completing assignments, doing Odds and Evens, writing way too many essays, all to make it to this point. We’ve made friends, built relationships, and strengthened our bond with God, tying us together at this point. We’ve gone through hardships, dealt with a pandemic, helped each other through negative times, all while looking forward to this point. So what’s my point? Don’t let this point be an end point. Continue working hard and completing your tasks, whether it’s assignment in college, a job in the workforce or your own personal goal.”

ALUMNI ProfileS By Peyton Golowski ’19 Life contains a lot of uncertainty and people have seen that over the course of the past year. People learned to adapt to change and tried not to lose their faith and trust in God. In helping to see that faith, we turned to what was most certain: The educators and religious life found within the Catholic school system. Delone Catholic High School sits amongst surrounding partner schools and local parishes that form the community in which our faith thrives. We met with Mrs. Crystal (Bowman) Noel ’94, P’20, P’24, P’24 then-principal of St. Teresa of Calcutta McSherrystown Campus, to ask why she views Catholic education as so important during these unprecedented times. “Through the gospel, the teachings of our Catholic faith and our model of service in St. Teresa of Calcutta, we want our students to know God’s love and share it with others,” Noel said. Simply, we imitate God’s love by seeing it acted and envisioned by others. Noel mentioned how the educators learn from the children just as much as the children learn from them. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus called the children to him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” (18:16). Having God be at the center of this relationship allows for a solid foundation of trust and spiritual growth to happen in a positive learning environment. Noel is not the only Delone Catholic alum who is inspired to create a learning environment that allows faith to grow Across town, Mr. David Staub ’94, P’25, is the newly appointed principal at St. Joseph School and former math teacher at Delone Catholic High School. He not only has been involved in Catholic education himself, but is sending his children through the same school system where they are encouraged to become involved

in their faith. “The foundation of all we do will be rooted in God’s teachings and guide us daily,” said Staub. “Catholic schools provide the opportunity for children to strengthen their faith and provide opportunities to cultivate their relationship with God.” Staub believes all the opportunities can only take place in a Catholic school providing tremendous opportunities for children to grow spiritually. St. Joseph’s core teachings are enriched by faith, discipline, and education. Staub explained that these qualities can only come to fruition within a Catholic school system based on the teachings of Christ. Both principals expressed that the best way to exude the way of God through Catholic education can be found in the individual child. Each person has his or her own way of learning and adapting to new challenges. There is no better way of doing things such as this than in the Catholic school system. Staub plans to aid his teachers by “expanding their [the teachers’] toolbox for classroom instruction.” A key element in aiding this endeavor is making sure that the educators of the surrounding schools are well-prepared. Mrs. Rebecca (Long) Sieg ’92, P’20, P’25, the principal of Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School, explained that the best way to ensure a child has a strong religious education is through the faculty’s willingness to face new and upcoming challenges that can arrive at any time. “We are a team and our focus will always be to partner with the parents in educating their children and doing the best we can for the children entrusted in our care each and every day,” Sieg said. Diving deeper into what makes Catholic education truly the best fit for any student, we look at the foundation of God’s teaching: The Catholic Church. In addition to local principals, Delone Catholic is blessed to boast alumni in the priesthood and permanent diaconate.
Those men gave insight into how to keep our Catholic schools up to the standard of Catholic teaching. Rev. Dwight Schlaline ’00 of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Hanover took into consideration how to seek true happiness with our faith: “Our educational goals should revolve around our relationship with God. When God is truly at the center instead of mere self-interest, people find the happiness they didn’t know they were seeking.” In other words, we tend to be blinded by unnecessary things that ultimately distract us from finding happiness in God and his way of teaching. A vital way in becoming closer to Christ can be found in the way we interact with others. Rev. Anthony Miller ’71 of St. Aloysius Gonzaga Church in Littlestown enlightened the mindset for those who struggle in coming to terms with how one can grow with God. After he visited with his First Friday Communion volunteers, Fr. Miller took some time to talk about what makes the Catholic Church so strong and planted in faith. “It is all about connections outside of the church that make the community so special,” Miller said. Being called to the priesthood at such a young age – having first thought about it around second grade – Miller has seen firsthand accounts of how faith can bring people together. He continues to believe that, “with no relationship with others in Christ, there is no model to follow on how to live out one’s faith.” The Catholic faith community is a blessing made by connections with other people. Interacting with others in our schools and parishes can only make our faith grow stronger with Christ and his teachings.
Three principals and two priests, all alumni of Delone Catholic, are inspiring the next generation to “Be Doers of the Word” through Catholic education.

ARTEM REICHART ’22 Artem, a running back for the Delone Catholic football team, had been scheduled to go on a People to People trip to Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji in 2020, but then the world shut down. “Costa Rica was actually the only trip that went this year,” Artem said. The group did a lot of touring, including national parks, volcanoes, and a coffee plantation. Costa Rica, a small, rugged, rainforested country in Central America, sits on the edge of a tectonic plate, making it volcanically active. “Everything there is hilly,” Artem noted. The trip organizers as well as the citizens of Costa Rica were “super strict” about COVID-19 protocols, including mask-wearing and hand-washing, he added. The trip was educational as well as enjoyable. Artem’s favorite thing was ziplining, which he did from 200 feet up and achieved a speed of 20 mph. On one pass, a toucan flew right in front of Artem’s face, he said. Toucans to Costa Ricans are like pigeons to Americans, although arguably cuter. One of the places Artem toured was an animal rescue, which he described as “very cool.” It is illegal in Costa Rica to keep any native animals as a pet.
For Artem Reichart, the question “So what did you do this summer?” has an unusual answer: He spent nine days in Costa Rica on a People to People trip.
Artem, who lives on a farm, appreciated the biodiversity of the country. He is fascinated by zoology and is looking at schools like Virginia Tech and Texas Tech. For Artem, Delone Catholic’s motto – Be Doers of the Word – was something he carried with him. He and his fellow students brought seven bags of toys for children in an orphanage. Artem himself is adopted, having been born in Russia and adopted at age three. COVID wreaked havoc on the Costa Rican economy, because tourism is the main industry for the small nation. “Seeing a third-world country makes you focus on your priorities more,” Artem said. “It makes you really be grateful for what we have. It makes you think twice. It definitely helps you grow spiritually, mentally, physically.”

People to People People to People International was founded by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on Sept. 11, 1956. The idea came to him as he was liberating concentration camps after World War II. Then-General Eisenhower, leader of the Allied troops in Western Europe, believed that ordinary citizens wanted a more peaceful world. He believed that could be achieved if students learned about other cultures and countries, believing that familiarity would lead to camaraderie. Today, People to People International continues this endeavor through humanitarian work, cultural exchange, and global education.

from the
Director of Enrollment & Outreach One of the aspects of my job that I enjoy the most is helping prospective families transition to Delone Catholic High School. Whether that transition is from eighth to ninth grade, or as a transfer student, I enjoy giving school tours, scheduling shadow days, organizing open houses and generally telling the wonderful story of Delone Catholic High School. As a parent of three graduates and a product of 12 years of Catholic education, I embrace the opportunity to share my experiences with Catholic education with as many families as possible. This year we are welcoming more than 100 new students to Delone Catholic High School. Enrollment has increased from last year, and we are making plans to continue this upward trend. This summer, I was privileged to attend the Latino Enrollment Institute at the University of Notre Dame with my colleague Bobbi (Weaver) Lawyer ’90. The Latino Enrollment Institute (LEI) was founded in 2012 in response to national data suggesting that Latinos are the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. Catholic Church yet are largely underserved by Catholic schools. LEI offers principals and enrollment professionals a framework in which to transform their schools to attract and serve Latino families. We learned a lot in this intensive four-day conference and returned to Delone Catholic armed with information and resources to help us begin our own Latino enrollment initiative. Catholic education is a blessing that is evident in our students, alumni, and school family. We are forever grateful to families and benefactors who continue to support us in our school’s mission to graduate “Doers of the Word.” If you are interested in getting a dynamite tour of our school for a friend or family member, I would love to hear from you. You can easily schedule an appointment with me from our school website under Admissions. We are looking forward to a fantastic school year and hope that you may join us for Homecoming, at an athletic event, or other alumni gathering. If you cannot be with us in person, we ask that you join us in spirit with prayers for our students, teachers and families. Sincerely,

Dear Alumni, Parents, and Friends of Delone Catholic High School, Thank you for the many ways in which you helped us navigate the 2020-21 school year! Delone Catholic has always prided itself on the close-knit connections within its extended family, and the last 18 months have stood as a stark reminder of how much we all need each other. It has also demonstrated that adversity can create new opportunities and solidify existing plans. We have been very fortunate to have increased interaction with our community through the use of technology. So many of you have voiced your support and shared your memories through our social media. We know through the viewership numbers of DCBN that more of you than ever followed our programming – spiritual, academic, and extracurricular. We have also seen significant growth in another area vital to our mission – philanthropic support. As reported in the Spring issue of this magazine, our second Squire Impact Day in March resulted in a huge increase in donors and more than double the dollars raised. This was part of an overall trend across our advancement efforts in 2020-21. We gained nearly 300 donors, year-over-year, an increase of more than 36 percent. Dollars invested increased by nearly 24 percent, and the $1,260,199.18 in total giving is by far the largest amount ever in a year that did not include a capital campaign. In a vacuum, these numbers are impressive, but what is the point? The point is the impact made by your generosity. We were able to provide more tuition assistance than ever before, ensuring that finances do not stand in the way for families who want to choose a Delone Catholic education. Teachers were able to deliver the curriculum to students in spite of new challenges, and we were able to do so entirely in person. We were able to compensate for lost revenue from cancelled events, and ultimately, deliver the faith and educational formation that ensure our students are prepared to lead, prepared to serve, and prepared for life. Because of your generosity, we are well placed to respond to the new challenges of 2021-22, and we are a stronger school and a stronger community. We ask for your continued support this year, and above all, we ask for your presence as you are able and for your prayers that God will continue to guide us through whatever is over the horizon! May God bless you!

The 1940 Society Leaders emerged to ensure Catholic education would continue for McSherrystown and the surrounding communities after a fire destroyed Central Catholic High School. Following their example, leaders have generously upheld this legacy, thus allowing Delone Catholic High School to advance its mission of creating disciples who are prepared to lead, prepared to serve, and prepared for life since 1940. In celebration of 75 years of leadership, The 1940 Society was established at the outset of the 2014-15 fiscal year. In the fall of 1942, just two years after opening its doors, Delone Catholic officially welcomed Henry C. “Henny” Noel into its family as a student. He later became a fixture in the maintenance department from 1958 until just days before his sudden passing on Dec. 29, 1993. Through the generosity of his brother-in-law, Roger R. Weaver ’47, Henny’s name has stayed at the forefront of Delone Catholic’s consciousness since. In retirement, Henny had planned to work at Roger’s Cedar Ridge Golf Course in Gettysburg. Roger, along with family and friends, founded the Henny Noel Memorial Golf Tournament, which was first played in 1994, as a way to keep Henny’s memory alive. The tournament has become a landmark on the Delone Catholic calendar over nearly 30 years. Through 2021, the tournament has raised more than $234,000 in tuition assistance for students at Delone Catholic in Henny’s name. Out of the spotlight, Roger and his family have done remarkable work to provide a Delone Catholic education for countless students who otherwise could not afford it. He has also been an ardent supporter of Squire and Squirette student-athletes as a spectator at games and through other fundraisers. His support of Delone Catholic is just one of many ways he has served those around him. He was also active in parish life at St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Bonneauville, and in the Bonneauville community. Roger passed away on May 19 after an illness. He is survived by seven children, 13 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. Everyone at Delone Catholic is grateful for all he has done for our community and the course he set to help current and future students.

2020-21 Boys’ Basketball Led by four seniors, the Squires returned to the court in January, playing 18 games in an abbreviated 45-day schedule. The team finished 8-10 overall, 6-8 in YAIAA Division III. Among the highlights was a three-game winning streak in early February, which included a win over crosstown rival Hanover. The team returns six letter winners for the 2021-22 season.
2020-21 Girls’ Basketball The Squirettes’ 2019-20 season ended when the PIAA tournaments were cancelled after the second round due to COVID, so they began the 2020-21 season on a four-game winning streak. Stepping up to Class 4A due to their recent success in the postseason, and without a senior on the roster, Delone Catholic did not miss a beat, going 20-2 overall and 12-0 in YAIAA Division III. The Squirettes won 15 straight games to open the season before falling to eventual Class 6A District 3 champion and state semifinalist Cumberland Valley. After that, they resumed their dominant ways en route to their second straight District 3 championship. They reached the PIAA semifinal, where they fell to Villa Maria, 47-39. Their unblemished league record ran their winning streak to 36 consecutive in YAIAA division play, the longest such streak since the Squirettes won 86 straight league games from Feb. 9, 1988-Jan. 15, 1993. The Squirettes’ win against Littlestown on Jan. 28 also marked an incredible milestone for head coach Gerry Eckenrode P’04, P’07. It was his 500th victory in 22 seasons at Delone Catholic. No two coaches in the history of Delone Catholic athletics can combine for more than Eckenrode’s 512 since he took over in 1999-2000. Giana Hoddinott ’22, who recently committed to play basketball at NCAA Division I Mount St. Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md., was named to the PIAA Class 4A All-State second team and the YAIAA Division III Player of the Year. Abby Jacoby ’22, Makenna Mummert ’22, and Abigael Vingsen ’22 were all named to the YAIAA Division III second team. They, along with the rest of the 2020-21 team, return to try to continue their run of success, and the Class of 2022 will attempt to add to its legacy which includes a 72-7 overall record, three division championships, two district championships, a state championship, a state semifinal finish, and a state run ended by a pandemic.

2020-21 Wrestling The Squires put together a strong regular season, going 8-6 overall and a third-place 4-2 in YAIAA Division III. Tate Neiderer ’21 placed third, Connor Bauerline ’24 placed fourth, and Nate Hart ’21 placed sixth in the District 3 Class 2A Section 1 tournament. Bauerline and Neiderer qualified for the District 3 Class 2A tournament, where their seasons came to an end.
2021 Baseball The Squires got back on the plus side with their first winning season since 2015, and reached the PIAA District 3 playoffs for the first time since 2016. As part of an overall record of 11-9, and a second-place 9-6 in YAIAA Division IV, Delone Catholic won four in a row in May, sweeping a home-andhome against Fairfield and picking up wins against Diocesan rivals Bishop McDevitt and York Catholic. The Squires fell, 11-7, to Newport in the District 3 Class 2A semifinal.
2021 Boys’ Lacrosse The Squires returned to the field after the cancelled 2020 season, going 2-13 overall and 1-12 in YAIAA play. They defeated Dover in the third straight meeting between the two schools, and got their other win in a non-league contest at Chambersburg. Delone Catholic also came up just short in a 12-11 contest against Mechanicsburg.
2021 Boys’ Tennis The Squires went 5-8 overall and 3-6 in YAIAA Division II in 2021. They posted a three-match winning streak in early April. Ben Elsner ’22, Andrew Gervasi ’22, and Isaac Sheerer ’22 all qualified for the YAIAA singles tournament. Elsner and Gervasi also made the YAIAA doubles tournament as a team, and were joined by Sheerer and Sebastian Fielding ’24.

2021 Softball The Squirettes entered the 2021 season with a great deal of uncertainty. Coming off the cancelled 2020 season and returning only one senior and four juniors, Delone Catholic grew up quickly to post a record of 11-9. The 10-6 record in YAIAA Division IV play was good enough for a ninth consecutive division title. Alma Partenza ’22 and Amy Anderson ’23 were named YAIAA Division IV Player and Pitcher of the Year, respectively after leading their team to the PIAA District 3 Class 2A semifinals, where they dropped an 8-7 decision to Upper Dauphin. Head coach Matt Rickrode ’90, P’16, P’19 expects that the experience will serve his team well in 2022. He said, “I was very proud of how the girls did with a season of not knowing exactly who would be playing or what position they may be playing due to COVID quarantines and injuries.”
2021 Boys’ Track and Field Collectively, the Squires struggled to an 0-6 record in 2021, but several individuals put together an excellent campaign. Ryan Murphy ’21 broke the school record in the high jump, and became the program’s top single-season scorer. He won the PIAA District 3 Class 2A championship in the 300 hurdles, placed second in the 100-meter dash, and fourth in the high jump. Murphy also ran the lead leg for the Squires in the 4x400 relay. Dylan Staub ’22, Wyatt DiDio ’22, and Trenton Kopp ’21 rounded out that quartet. Kopp finished seventh in the district in the triple jump, ninth in the 400-meter dash, and 13th in the long jump. DiDio was fifth in the pole vault. Murphy qualified for the PIAA championship meet in the 100 and the 300 hurdles.
2021 Girls’ Track and Field The Squirettes swept the competition, going 6-0 in YAIAA III to win their third straight division title and 12th out of the last 14. Becky Hernandez ’21, Emily Malesky ’21, Julia O’Brien ’21, Maggie Hughes ’22, Emily McCann ’22, Marissa Miller ’22, Makenna Mummert ’22, Gabby Roberts ’22, Madison O’Brien ’23, Emma Raville ’23, Emma Bunty ’24, Samantha Smith ’24, and Kaitlyn Schwarz ’24 combined to qualify for the PIAA District 3 Class 2A championships in 14 different events. Julia O’Brien (3,200 - ninth), McCann (300 hurdles – 10th), the 4x100 relay team of Malesky, Madison O’Brien, Raville, and McCann (10th), the 4x400 relay team of Hughes, Madison O’Brien, Raville, and McCann, and the 4x800 relay team of Smith, Julia O’Brien, Hughes, and Hernandez (ninth), Miller (pole vault – eighth/tie), and Mummert (triple jump – eighth) all recorded top-10 places at the district meet.
