BUILDING OVERVIEW

Dell Medical School is predicated upon collaboration — between health professions, students, faculty, and the community — and the Education and Administration Building is designed to foster interaction. An open stairway from the first floor to the fifth will span the length of the building, encouraging physical activity and facilitating chance meetings of students and faculty as they move between floors. With all floors visible from both inside and outside, the stairway will be just one place of many designed to bring people together outside the classroom. Plentiful lounges and meeting rooms, comfortable seating, and study terraces on every floor will encourage people to linger. Formal learning spaces will also support the theme of cooperation with flexible configurations that can accommodate both small groups and large lectures, all featuring state-of-the-art technology.

The Ground floor is the gateway to Dell Medical School and will frequently be visitors’ first experience in our spaces. With interdisciplinary teaching space and plentiful room for students, faculty, and visitors to connect, the ground floor’s inviting open design will facilitate the chance meetings that often ignite creative and fruitful collaborations. A café on Level 1 features comfortable seating, inviting people to linger while they enjoy affordable healthy fare. Features at the eatery include a salad bar and a large grill where customers can watch their food being prepared.

Designed to embody Dell Medical School values such as interprofessional teamwork, community, and innovation, the first floor offers welcoming spaces that bring people together, including a Team-Based Learning Lecture Classroom.

The interactive 120-seat lecture hall represents the future of medical education.

Pharmacy and nursing students will take classes with medical students in the thoughtfully designed space that blurs the line between formal instruction and independent study. Seating is configured to be flexible; students can face an instructor or break out in small working groups. Each station will be wired for sound and internet, with giant whiteboards behind each row of seating.

The second floor will bring together faculty, students, and prospective students.

The school’s recruitment, admissions, and counseling operations will take place here. Surrounded by faculty offices, the floor will be prime space for studentfaculty collaboration and interaction. A flexible central room will double as a visualization lab and conference room. Also beginning here is a series of outdoor study terraces that grow successively larger with each floor. Campus ITS will manage a help desk for the medical district to assist students, faculty, and staff with their technology needs.

Its purpose chosen for its central location, the third floor will be dedicated to the core purpose of Dell Medical School — its students. Each 50-member class will be split into two societies, and each society into five subgroups. Continuing the theme of collaboration, ten group rooms of various sizes will accommodate these larger and smaller groups. As the student body grows each year, students will work with not only their classmates but also with students in earlier cohorts, with the more experienced serving as mentors. Older medical schools have traditionally struggled with a lack of student space, with students coming in early in the morning to jockey for hot spots to meet and study. Plentiful student space — an area that students can control — will avoid such conflict, allowing students to work together without the pressure and competition of space constraints.

Other features of the floor include a virtual library, large study area, study carrels, flexible glass-walled lounges, kitchenettes, and soft furniture.

The fourth floor will be dedicated to formal hands-on learning and will be home to a multipurpose teaching lab that medical students will share with nursing students. This interprofessional education will help them prepare for careers that depend on their ability to successfully interact with other health professionals.

Adjacent to the multipurpose teaching lab is an anatomy lab that will combine the best of modern medical education with the traditional and essential experience of working with cadavers. Each workstation in the anatomy lab will be equipped with audio-visual technology and Internet access. Both labs will open to a mock clinic where students examine actors standing in as surrogate patients. The suite will include six simulation labs as well as locker rooms for the actors. Next to the simulation labs will be a lounge for students to relax afterward. The lounge will also offer stunning views of the Texas Capitol.
