Welcome to The Travel Convention On behalf of ABTA and our members it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Bodrum. This is the first time we have returned to Türkiye since we visited Antalya in 2012, making it our third visit in total. It reflects the growing importance of this beautiful country, with its rich and varied history, to the travel industry.

We know from past experience that our Turkish hosts will provide an incredible event and I would like to thank the Türkiye Tourism Promotion and Development Agency both for inviting us and for arranging two highly anticipated social occasions – the Convention welcome party and host party.

The facilities at the Lujo Hotel - Bodrum are second to none, and in addition I would strongly recommend you take the time to experience one of the excursions on offer and take a trip into Bodrum itself, a city with an incredible history, good value and good quality restaurants and a truly spectacular castle.

Unleashing new potential is the theme for this year’s Travel Convention. Bodrum, the shining star of the Turkaegean, welcomes you Bodrum, Türkiye’s world-famous travel spot, is delighted to host this year’s ABTA Travel Convention. This will be the third time Türkiye has hosted ABTA’s annual event. Previously, ABTA’s delegates gathered in İstanbul (1996) and Belek (2012). As the previous cities proved to be fantastic locations for ABTA; Bodrum, the shining star of the Turkaegean, will also become home to another unforgettable experience.

Without a doubt, Bodrum is one of the most well-known tourist spots along the stunning coasts of Türkiye. This beautiful peninsula has been a favourite of both locals and tourists for well over 50 years due to its sunny beaches, verdant landscape, sparkling high-end resorts and premium shopping experiences.

Gümüşlük’s bohemian vibes emanate from its waterfront jazz bars and seafood eateries, while the Yalkavak and Göltürkbükü districts of the peninsula draw a global clientele with their high-end beach clubs, hotels, and marinas. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, which was located near modern-day Bodrum.

While in Bodrum, you can enjoy a summer performance in the city’s historic theatre or admire the picturesque marinas and docks, where traditional wooden sailboats known as “gulets” are moored. Dinners in Bodrum, a culinary destination added to Michelin Guide’s Turkish map recently, are enhanced by the spectacular sunset views, particularly from the ports, marinas and seaside areas that house restaurants serving the most distinctive selections from Turkish and global cuisine.

It is a great pleasure to welcome the members of ABTA, an organisation that has done precious work for the UK travel industry for more than 70 years, here in Türkiye for the third time. I wish you all the best and hope the 2023 Travel Convention in Bodrum will be a memorable and productive experience for everyone.

As a prelude to our panel discussion on Travel in 2024, Graeme Buck, Director of Communications at ABTA, outlines the key findings from ABTA’s new Travel Confidence Index – developed to assess how confident consumers currently feel about international travel and why.

Simon Parker looks back at how the travel and tourism industry has fought back from the brink since early 2020, via some of the adventures he’s embarked upon, and the inspiring people he’s met along the way.

When borders closed in March 2020, Simon’s career vanished, almost overnight. In order to survive, he had to think outside the box.

In the past three years he’s met dozens of people all over the world, who too have unleashed new potential during, arguably, the most challenging period in our modern history. Simon’s first book, Riding Out, was a 2022 bestseller. He will be joining us directly from Miami, having just cycled 4,500 miles across the USA in preparation for his next book, Fractured States.

Badges and lanyards

Details of how to download the Convention app, sponsored by Holiday Extras, have been emailed to delegates. The app is compatible on iPhone, Android and other smart phone devices and will provide you with an at-aglance guide to this year’s Convention. It also offers you the opportunity to connect with delegates before, during and after the event and to submit questions and engage in interactive polls during the business sessions.

Please wear your badge and lanyard, sponsored by easyJet holidays, on the three Convention days to confirm that you are a registered delegate. The organisers have the right to refuse admission to anyone not wearing a badge. If you lose your badge, a replacement may be obtained from the Convention Help Desk.

Lujo Resort

The Convention Lounge will be open from Sunday to Wednesday in the Group Lobby.

Delegates may use this area for meetings with the event’s major partners as well as with each other. This is also where delegates will check-in on arrival at the Lujo Hotel.

During the check-in process at the Lujo Hotel, delegates will be assigned a Joy Advisor who you can contact via WhatsApp should you require assistance from the hotel during your stay. Delegates who are in resort on Sunday 29th October can make their dinner reservation via their Joy Advisor.

The Help Desk will be in the Convention Lounge on Sunday and Monday – open times: 10:00 – 17:00. The desk will move to the Bodrum Ballroom Foyer on Tuesday and Wednesday – open times: 09:00 – 16:30 (Tuesday) and 09:00 – 15:00 (Wednesday).
