I

t is truly exciting to be part of an institutional transformation in which Delaware State University is building on its strengths and moving forward in many innovative ways.

Already highly regarded within the community of Historically Black Colleges and Universities, DSU refuses to rest on its laurels. The University is aggressively working to improve its effectiveness in helping our students to achieve their academic and professional aspirations, while at the same time striving to ensure that DSU continues to be a strong institution able to withstand any external challenges such as the unpredictable vicissitudes of the economy.

As DSU strategically focuses on student success and institutional sustainability, we are looking to our alumni to assist us in this work. We are now in the last year of the University’s $20 million Greater Than One: Campaign for Students. Money from this initiative will be used specifically to help our students address the financial challenges associated with staying in school. We are encouraged that we are more than three-quarters of the way toward reaching our goal, having already raised more than $16 million. Some of you have contributed to this campaign; your generosity is greatly appreciated, and we hope that it will continue. To reach our campaign goal, we need alumni we have not heard from yet to show their financial support for their alma mater and its current students.

A NEW ERA FOR OPTICS State-of-the-art Optical Science Center for Applied Research Building provides multitude of opportunity for program

elaware State University is celebrating the completion of its Optical Science Center for Applied Research (OSCAR) Building, a state-of-the-art facility for academic research, innovation, industry and education. The OSCAR Building is the first phase of a multidisciplinary optical research facility on campus.

The highly tectonic nature of the building — made possible thanks to the support of $10 million from the state of Delaware — is apparent with its prismatic qualities of both light and reflection.

The initial 27,000-square-foot first phase houses state-of-the-art advanced optical research laboratories to facilitate the rapidly expanding field of optics and its related technologies.

RESEARCH AND INNOVATION Designed by the architectural firm Richard and Bauer, the new Optical Science Center for Applied Research (OSCAR) Building’s design breaks down traditional research silos and promotes interaction and interdisciplinary research. The building is organized about a central open space integrating the research offices and support spaces with the research lab environment.

Research labs are equipped to facilitate rapidly changing missions in optical research, including high order vibration, and temperature and humidity control to meet the stringent demands of the research environment. Flexible research modules permit the adaptability and long-term flexibility to accommodate changing research missions.

Research incubator laboratories and support spaces are integrated into the complex, supporting innovative initiatives in the development of processes and products in the optical field.

A suite of shared laboratories provides all the users of the building with advanced technology, testing and instrumentation to support a myriad of optical research needs, including laser spectroscopy, nanochemistry, conventional and confocal microscopy, scanning electronic and atomic force microscopy, high-technology incubator space and a complete image analysis suite.

As a steward for sustainability, the building mitigates its long-term energy use, including radiant cooling and heating systems to minimize the need for high-volume air systems and reduce airflow turbulence in the optical research labs.

There are future plans for the construction of a Phase II OSCAR building that will add expanded capabilities.

Since its founding, the Optics Program at DSU — which now offers a Master of Science degree in Applied Optics and a Ph.D. in Optics — has obtained tens of millions of dollars in competitive research grants and has achieved national and international recognition for its role in NASA’s most recent mission to the planet Mars.

Earlier this year, Melikechi was selected to be part of NASA’s 2020 mission to Mars.

One of the few centers for applied research in optics in the country with an expertise in biophotonics, space navigation and exploration, imaging, and data processing and classification, OSCAR researchers are making significant contributions that will yield the early detection of diseases, pollutants and other threats to our well-being.

A tribute to the institution’s 6th president President of then-Delaware State College from 1953-1960, Dr. Jerome H. Holland is credited with providing the critical leadership needed to navigate the College through the most difficult decade of its history. Among his accomplishments:  Holland authored a 1954 report to then-Governor Caleb Boggs which included a study of the College from a historical perspective and specific

recommendations to ensure its future — most of which were adopted by the governor.  After losing its accreditation in 1949 prior to Holland’s arrival, under his leadership the College won back its accreditation as a four-year institution in 1957.  During the Holland years, DSC received a combined $2.5 million in major capital improvement funding, resulting in construction of a men’s dormitory

(Conwell Hall), the multipurpose Memorial Hall, Kent Apartments (faculty housing) and an administrative/classroom building (now Grossley Hall).  During his tenure, enrollment rose from 167 students in 1953-54 to 383 in 1959-60.

Your support is important To date, more than $29,000 has been raised to support the statue’s creation. Among the latest contributions, a $10,000 gift was presented by the Class of 1965 toward the project. At a June luncheon, $11,100 in donations were made, along with $4,500 in pledges.

GRANTS AND RESEARCH

$1 million from National Science Foundation will expand doctoral chemistry research capability A team of Department of Chemistry faculty scientists has been awarded a three-year, $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation that will expand the research capacity of its doctoral program into the materials chemistry arena. The grant will fund a project entitled Advanced Nanomaterials for Energy Research and Applications (ANERA) and enhance the research infrastructure by focusing DSU’s existing Applied Chemistry Ph.D. program on materials chemistry research.

The grant will also enable the development of new materials chemistry courses and fund fellowships to support graduate students, as well as create a growing network of material scientists in Delaware. The research is designed to create novel catalytic materials with unprecedented composition properties that could be used in biomass conversion to biofuels and valuable chemicals.

The principal investigator of the grant is Dr. Cherese Winstead, chair of the Department of Chemistry. The co-investigators are Dr. Cheng-Yu Lai, associate professor of chemistry, and Dr. Daniela R. Radu, assistant professor of chemistry.

$300K | INTERDIGITAL INC. FUNDING WILL ESTABLISH 3 NEW LABORATORIES The College of Mathematics, Natural Sciences and Technology received a $300,000 grant from InterDigital Inc., a Wilmington-based wireless technology solutions company, which will be used to establish three new laboratories in the Mishoe Science Center — a digital and analog electronics laboratory, a wireless communications, signal processing and controls laboratory, and an advanced micro-controller design lab. President Harry L. Williams said the University is grateful for InterDigital’s financial support and its commitment to help DSU expand its science laboratory capabilities.

“InterDigital’s support assists DSU in fulfilling its core value of scholarship as well as in its Strategic Plan goals that relate to providing exceptional learning environments, achieving the top-notch preparation of our students, and the expansion of DSU’s scholarly and creative research capacity,” Williams said.

“Because we are a state institution of higher education, InterDigital’s support of DSU also helps the state of Delaware be all it can be.”

$330K | NATIONAL NUCLEAR SECURITY ADMINISTRATION GRANT WILL ENHANCE COLLABORATION

$192K | ARMY RESEARCH OFFICE FUNDING WILL BE USED TO CREATE LADAR SYSTEM

Highly sensitive detection and analysis of nuclear, chemical and biological materials is the goal of a new joint research and educational project recently awarded to OSCAR. Through a $330,000 grant from the National Nuclear Security Administration — an agency within the U.S. Department of Energy — DSU will join eight other universities and three DOE national laboratories to enhance a $4.6 million, three-year collaboration that will integrate the academic activities of the universities with the research objectives of the national laboratories. DSU’s participation is led by Dr. Hacene Boukari, associate professor in the Department of Physics and Engineering.

Dr. Renu Tripathi, associate professor of physics and engineering, has been awarded a $192,000 grant from the Army Research Office for the development of a long-range, high-resolution laser detection and ranging (LADAR) system. LADAR technology development is important for many critical defense applications such as surveillance, autonomous guidance and hazard avoidance. Tripathi and optics PhD candidate Yury Markushin, who developed a previous LADAR system, are working to create an improved multifunction system with polarization imaging capability by employing a photon counting and correlation technique.

Delaware State University is working together with SAP SE, a market leader in enterprise application software, as well as the Americas’ SAP Users’ Group to become a Center of Excellence in critical enterprise technological advancements to be shared with students from DSU and other Historically Black Colleges and Universities around the country.

The Project Propel Empowered by SAP initiative spearheaded by DSU, ASUG and SAP (through the SAP® University Alliances program and Black Employee Network) is intended to enable HBCUs to empower their students with knowledge of the latest SAP technologies.

The goal is to better prepare HBCU graduates with critical skills that are in demand among companies in the SAP ecosystem, enhancing their academic and career outcomes.

SAP enables more than 291,000 customers worldwide to work together more efficiently and use business insight more effectively. ASUG is the world’s largest independent SAP user group, made up of more than 100,000 individuals in more than 17 industries across the SAP ecosystem, with a mission of providing ASUG members with the resources, tools and connections they need to maximize the return on their SAP investment.

“Delaware State University is honored to be partnering with SAP, one of the tech industry’s biggest leaders,” said President Harry L. Williams.

“We are excited to be the HBCU Center of Excellence for this initiative. As a result of this partnership, Delaware State University will support faculty from HBCUs across the U.S., enabling students to gain hands-on experience in SAP’s latest technologies as part of their degree programs.”

The University’s College of Business, led by Dean Donna Covington, completed a two-week training this summer for DSU faculty who will later conduct training sessions on campus for their academic counterparts from other HBCUs. “ASUG members are seeking graduates with skills in SAP S/4HANA and analytics solutions from SAP, as well as knowledge of the latest industry trends including the Internet of Things, the business network, Big Data and user experience,” said Geoff Scott, chief executive officer of ASUG. “We look forward to connecting our community to talented graduates of HBCUs skilled in these areas to enable our members to further drive innovation with their SAP investments.”

MAY 2015 COMMENCEMENT

His Excellency John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor, former president of the Republic of Ghana

More than 500 graduates celebrated the completion of their degrees during the May 17 Commencement Ceremony at Delaware State University’s Alumni Stadium.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER The ceremony marked the first visit by a former head of state to the DSU campus. His Excellency John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor, a former two-term president of the Republic of Ghana who has continued in his post-presidential years to work on the issues of food security, hunger, poverty and climate change, told the Class of 2015 that the time has come for their generation to aspire to leadership that would be globally transforming. “You can only do this when you join and associate with forces that seek the ultimate good of all humanity,” Kufuor said.

“Hunger, poverty, disease, deadly migratory voyages, social and economic deprivation and inequalities anywhere and everywhere in the world, especially in the least developed countries and conflict areas, should be of concern to you.”

The University presented Kufuor with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

 WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF YOUR RESEARCH?

The presence of matrix effects and the complexity of the high

power laser-target interactions are LIBS’ main drawbacks. The aim

of this work is to provide an improved physical explanation of

variations of LIBS spectra due to changes in a sample’s properties

and spatial characteristics of the exciting laser beam.  WHAT WAS THE MOST INTERESTING THING YOU LEARNED

DURING THIS RESEARCH?

Throughout my graduate experience, conducting research

taught me how to accept, overcome, learn from failures and find

solutions. Hence, I am confident to say that the Optics graduate

program at DSU made me a much better scientist, and I value the

training that I was fortunate enough to receive.  WHAT IMPACT WILL YOUR DISCOVERIES HAVE?

My work may open new research avenues in biomedical

and space exploration fields. In particular, it can

contribute to the development of a robust LIBS based multi-element coded assay for

sensitive detection of cancer biomarkers.  WHAT ARE YOUR POST-DOCTORATE PLANS? I am currently interning for Lam Research Corporation in Fremont, Calif., as a process engineer, where I am developing new or modifying process formulations in support of the company’s complex semiconductor capital equipment and systems. Also, I look forward to many more fruitful collaborations with my Ph.D. advisor, Dr. Noureddine Melikechi, to expand the Optical Science Center for Applied Research (OSCAR).

Dr. Wilma Mishoe appointed to Board of Trustees Gov. Jack Markell has appointed longtime higher education administrator Dr. Wilma Mishoe to serve a six-year term on the Delaware State University Board of Trustees.

The appointment returns Mishoe to the campus where she grew up as a teen. She is the daughter of Dr. Luna I. Mishoe, president of then-Delaware State College from 1960-1987, and his wife, First Lady Hattie B. Mishoe.

In joining the board, Mishoe succeeds former board member Bennie Smith. Her appointment is a continuation of her impressive career in higher education, which most recently included providing critical leadership to Wilberforce University (WU) in Ohio, one of the oldest historically black universities in the country.

Mishoe was drawn out of retirement to serve on a Presidential Transition Team in October 2013 at Wilberforce, where she was a member of its Board of Trustees since 2003. That board later appointed Mishoe as the institution’s acting president, an interim leadership post she held until a permanent president was hired in October 2014. She then continued as a special assistant during the transition.

In 2010, Mishoe retired from a 30-year career at Delaware Technical Community College, where she held number of administrative leadership posts, including dean of the Office of Instruction and dean of Student Services, federal programs coordinator, and affirmative action officer. From 1975-1980, she was the dean of students and director of Financial Aid at then-Wilmington College.

Dr. Wilma Mishoe is the daughter of longtime Delaware State President Dr. Luna I. Mishoe, shown in the statue.

Mishoe has a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology (1971) and a Master of Education degree in Student Personnel Administration, Guidance and Counseling (1972), both from Howard University in Washington, D.C. She earned a Doctor of Education degree in Adult/ Vocational Education (1994) from Temple University in Philadelphia.

HBCU philanthropy in spotlight at 4th annual symposium Delaware State University recently hosted its fourth annual HBCU Philanthropy Symposium under the theme of “A Consortium at Work,” once again bringing together development and advancement professionals from 12 institutions to discuss the myriad of challenges faced by Historically Black Colleges and Universities — and particularly public HBCUs — regarding philanthropy. One of the symposium’s goals is to develop a consortium among public HBCUs that will lead to a sustainable model of funding for each institution.

A major topic of discussion was student

philanthropy and how to get students involved in the process of giving back to their university.

Participants engaged in dialogue to learn more effective ways to increase funding in corporate giving, annual giving, campaigns and major gifts, as well as new ideas for measuring their data to show important trends within their institutions.

Johnny C. Taylor Jr., chief executive officer and president of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, and William F.L. Moses, managing director for education programs at the Kresge Foundation, gave keynote addresses at the event.

DSU recently celebrated the fruits of a joint academic program that is part of one of its international partnerships. President Harry L. Williams, right, and other representatives from DSU and the state of Delaware traveled to China to join Dr. Lyu Zhongda, left, president of Ningbo University of Technology (NBUT), to participate in the Commencement Ceremony of the first graduating cohort of the joint DSUNBUT Accounting Program. Seventy-five NBUT students earned degrees from both their home institution as well as from DSU. Eleven have been admitted into top accounting graduate programs in the United States and in Great Britain. During the ceremony, Chen Tong was awarded the DSU Presidential Academic Award and Jiajun Wu received the Presidential Leadership Award.

COOPERATION ACCORD SIGNED WITH CHINA’S BEIHUA UNIVERSITY Delaware State University signed a memorandum of cooperation with officials from Beihua University of Jilin, China, that will provide additional study abroad and collaboration opportunities for both institutions.

The cooperation agreement opens the door for study-abroad semesters for undergraduate and graduate students, as well as future research, teaching collaborations and professional development for faculty.

The agreement was signed during a visit to campus by Dr. Nailong Wang, BU vice president; Gary Fang, officer of BU’s Joint Program; and Degang Xiao, director of BU’s International Education & Exchange College.

CAMPUS NEWS MAKERS 3 receive 2015 Faculty Excellence Awards TEACHING | Dr. Frank Gazda, associate professor of music Gazda, a faculty member since 2007, maintains a teaching philosophy that undergraduate music students need to receive a strong grounding in the fundamentals of their craft, need to see the relevance of these fundamentals to their success and need to be encouraged to be curious about all aspects of their music. He exposes his students to as many successful professionals as possible. His teaching activities have included revamping the applied music curriculum for low brass instruments to reflect contemporary trends in literature and pedagogy and other curriculum revisions. Additionally, he is active with performance and pedagogical research to enhance teaching.

RESEARCH | Dr. Hacene Boukari, associate professor of physics A faculty member since 2010, Boukari’s research at DSU has focused on understanding biomacromolecular interactions and nanotransport phenomena in complex systems and their possible roles with biological functions as well as biological pathologies. He has been successful in securing external funding from national organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense and Department of Education – $800,000 as a principal investigator and $8.5 million as a co-PI. The funding has been used for laboratory equipment and to support the undergraduate and graduate students he mentors.

SERVICE | Dr. Melissa Harrington, professor of biological sciences Harrington, a 14-year faculty member, has an active record of departmental, professional and community service. On a University level, she mentors faculty in the grant writing process as well as collaborates with faculty across several disciplines writing grants for research, teaching, community outreach and student scholarships. She has received over $18 million in funding as a principal investigator or co-PI and has assisted colleagues with grants that have brought over $2 million to DSU. She is the director of neuroscience for the statewide INBRE network, directing summer science camps for middle school students and serving on review panels for the National Institutes of Health and National Science Foundation.

NEUROSCIENCE GRADUATE STUDENT CHOSEN FOR PRESTIGIOUS FELLOWSHIP The National Science Foundation has named graduate student Sheed Itaman as a recipient of its highly competitive Graduate Research Fellowship.

Itaman, who is enrolled in DSU’s Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience master’s degree program, was selected for his research proposal titled “Aging Neurons: The Balance Between Calcium Ion Flux and Cell Death.” His graduate advisor is Dr. Michael Gitcho, assistant professor of biological sciences.

Itaman plans to achieve a Ph.D. in neuroscience and establish a biomedical research career.

PROFESSOR AWARDED BY YOUNG INVESTIGATOR PROGRAM The U.S. Department of the Navy recently announced that Dr. Mukti Rana, associate professor and chair of the Department of Physics and Engineering, has been selected to receive a grant award as part of the Office of Naval Research’s 2015 Young Investigator Program. Rana was selected on the strength of his proposal to establish a new integrated research and education program that will include research designed to improve night vision systems and other technologies such as spectrometers and radiometers. DSU physics and engineering students will be involved with work that includes the design, fabrication and characterization of uncooled infrared detectors, according to Rana, who is also a part of the Optical Science Center for Applied Research (OSCAR).

EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL WELCOMES NEW DIRECTOR The Early College High School at Delaware State University (ECHS@DSU) announced the appointment of Dr. Evelyn A. Edney as the school’s new leader following the retirement of Dr. Judi Coffield.

Formerly principal at Dover High School, Edney has held teaching and administrative positions in secondary schools in Delaware for the past 24 years.

She graduated with both Bachelor and Master of Arts in English degrees from the University of Delaware and a doctoral degree in Educational Leadership with a concentration in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Phoenix.

Edney hit the ground running by upgrading a Summer Bridge Program that last year served as an orientation for new students into a five-week program of coursework that gave students the opportunity to earn some credit hours — including college credit — during the summer break.

The ECHS@DSU now enrolls both ninth- and 10th-graders.

2015 graduate to serve as HBCU All-Star Now a MBA student and Project Propel Empowered by SAP intern, Leah Williams will be an ambassador for the White House initiative May 2015 graduate Leah Williams is among 83 students nationwide selected as a 2015 HBCU All-Star by The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Over the course of the year, the HBCU All-Stars will serve as ambassadors of the White House initiative by providing outreach and communication with their fellow students about the value of education and the role of the initiative as a networking resource.

The undergraduate, graduate and professional students were chosen for their accomplishments in academics, leadership and civic engagement.

The first graduate to receive both the Presidential Academic Excellence Award and the Presidential Leadership Award during a DSU Commencement, Williams earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Management with a concentration in Business Economics and a minor in Music, graduating with a 4.0 GPA. During her time at DSU, Williams — who plays nine musical instruments — served as a student conductor and arranger in the Approaching Storm Marching Band and also performed with other band groups. Her arrangement of Rocky’s “Gonna Fly Now” is played at the start of all home football games.

She was a mentor for incoming freshmen under the “SMILE” program; a supplemental instructor for intro to algebra, college algebra and microeconomic courses; founder and president of the newly established campus Christian group FORCE (Focusing on Renewing Christ-like Existence); and involved in various College of Business activities.

“Being a member of the College of Business at DSU was one of the best decisions I could’ve made. The college supported me academically but also supported me in all of these activities,” she said.

Williams began working as an intern during the summer for SAP SE and its Project Propel Empowered by SAP initiative for Historically Black Colleges and Universities at DSU. “It is an honor to be a part of this initiative and to help impact the futures of so many students across the country,” she said.

This fall, she is attending DSU as a Master of Business Administration graduate student.

In September, her role as an HBCU All-Star includes participation in the White House HBCU Week Conference with her on-campus mentor for the program, University College Tutoring and Supplemental Instruction Coordinator Anna Cortese.

125TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1890 MORRILL ACT DSU celebrated the 125th Anniversary of the 1890 Morrill Act — the federal legislation that resulted in the institution’s establishment in 1891 — with several events in April. Gov. Jack Markell visited campus to sign a proclamation marking “1890 Land-Grant University Week” in Delaware.

Satellite radio talk show host and activist Joe Madison, the commemoration’s keynote speaker, gave a presentation on “1890 Land-Grant Past, Present Future: A Time to Reflect.” The week of events culminated with a lunchtime campus 1890 Walk, above, and carnival. The commemoration co-chairs were Dr. Dyremple Marsh, dean of the College of Agriculture and Related Sciences, and Troy Darden, the college’s information coordinator.

INSPIRED DAY OF SERVICE

More than 200 present and former board members, administrators, staff, family and friends gathered in May for the unveiling of the newly named Claibourne D. Smith Administration Building, dedicated in honor of Smith’s longtime Board of Trustees leadership. Smith has been a board member since 1988 and was its chairman from 1992 to 2015, outside of 16 months between 2008 and early 2010 when he served as the institution’s acting president. A retired research chemist with DuPont, Smith said he was “proud, humbled and honored” by the recognition. “My evolution as a trustee leader was driven by my passion for education and a deep desire to make a difference to students who are pursuing their dreams,” he said. Shown above with wife Roseann, Smith will continue as a board member until his term ends in 2016.

About 500 students took part in the fourth annual Inspired Day of Service in March, donating time on a Saturday for community service outreach at sites around the state, including the Bellevue Community Center, the Brandywine Counseling Community Center and the Sunday Breakfast Mission, all in Wilmington; the Greater Dover Boys and Girls Club (Simon Circle) and the Habitat for Humanity Restore, both in Dover; College Road along the southern end of DSU; the Food Bank of Delaware in Milford; and the First State Community Action Agency in Georgetown. The community service work included neighborhood and road clean-ups, yard work, food bag preparation, bench building and a block party for Boys and Girls Club youths. Above, President Harry L. Class of 1965 marks golden anniversary with historic $104,000 gift to alma mater

embers of the Delaware State College Class of 1965 not only celebrated their 50th anniversary through their presence at May Commencement, but they also used the occasion to show their love for their alma mater with a donation of $104,000 — the largest gift ever presented to DSU by an alumni class.

The Class of 1965 made the presentation during a reception hosted by President Harry L. Williams and his wife Dr. Robin Williams at their residence during Commencement weekend.

“This is historic, because you made a commitment and you exceeded it,” said Williams. “This gift is not only tremendously remarkable as a reflection of your love for your alma mater, but also as a new standard for alumni support of DSU.” The fundraiser was born when five members of the Class of 1965 — Jimmie and Tina Strong, Dr. Martin Drew, the late Don Wright and the late Wilbur “Bigsby” Johnson (who both passed away in 2013) — were attending the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament and got into a discussion about what they could do to better support their alma mater.

“It originally began with the idea that if we could get 20 alums to give $5,000, then we would raise $100,000 for the University,” said Jimmie Strong.

As the fundraising concept began taking shape, the question became what to call it. “At some point, Don Wright said, ‘Let’s call it the Culture of Giving’, ” said Tina Strong.

The “Culture of Giving” not only stuck with the Class of 1965’s fundraising commitment, but also became an important part of the general language at DSU to inspire a new mind-set where alumni support of DSU is concerned.

Meanwhile, the original steering committee expanded, as class member Carolyn Golden Hebsgaard joined the committee, which had already begun making calls to class members they could reach and worked to locate others they had lost track of over the years.

“Martin (the fundraising chairman) was a running telephone when it came to reaching out to alumni from the class,” said Tina Strong.

Fast-forward five years later, and the pledge has become a fulfilled reality. A total of 62 people — other members of the

While hoping other alumni will follow their lead, the Class of 1965 is not done. Class members have pledged to set aside $25 per month to add to the historic amount they have already raised.

The Osher Reentry Scholarship is available to adults entering DSU to pursue their first bachelor’s degree after experiencing a cumulative gap in their education of five or more years after high school. Recipients receive up to $5,000 toward tuition costs through the Osher Reentry Scholarship Fund, made possible through the generosity of The Bernard Osher Foundation.

Foundation and corporate grants support student success $1M | LONGWOOD FOUNDATION RENEWS PROJECT ASPIRE Delaware State University has received renewed funding of $1 million from the Longwood Foundation to continue the proven successful model of Project Aspire.

Launched in 2011 with a grant from the foundation, Project Aspire has a primary goal of impacting retention and graduation rates of Delaware students. Through the foundation’s support, Project Aspire demonstrated that a multipronged support system can positively impact these rates, important measures of student persistence. The outcomes and objectives of the previous grant were met for the full cohort of students with 94 percent retention and 68 percent graduation rates.

The new grant will provide strategic support to three cohorts of full-time sophomores who are eligible Delawareans.

A significant number of students will receive assistance during their sophomore and junior years, up from 89 under the previous grant.

The project support includes scholarships, mentors and group meetings, as well as early warning systems and academic tutoring funded by DSU.

$150K | DUPONT CONTRIBUTES STEM SCHOLARSHIP DOLLARS The DuPont Corporation recently awarded DSU a grant of $150,000 to support STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) scholarships for students.

A DSU supporter for several decades, DuPont has a history of impacting student success. With its core values of Community, Integrity, Diversity, Scholarship and Outreach, DSU shares very similar values as the DuPont core values of Safety and Health, Environmental Stewardship, Respect for People and Highest Ethical Behavior.

$100K | BARCLAYS BANK CONTINUES MENTOR PROGRAM Barclays Bank recently awarded DSU a grant of $100,000 to fund the fifth year of the Barclays Bank Mentor Program during the fall 2015 semester.

The on-site program at Barclays, which has experienced tremendous growth since its inception with a cohort of five students, provides a student-centered learning environment that prepares College of Business students to be successful in their future business careers.

The program pairs Barclays professionals as mentors for COB students, centering on personal growth and career development.

Students also receive training in Advanced Excel to focus on core competencies and prepare them for projects requiring significant data analysis.

$75K | AMERICAN HONDA FOUNDATION ENABLES EXPLORER’S CLUB EXPANSION As a result of a renewal $75,000 grant from the American Honda Foundation, DSU this year expanded the Explorer’s Club, a project-based, STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics)-directed program designed to increase math and science skills among school-aged children using hands-on science projects.

Through the Explorer’s Club, established in 2012, DSU and the Boys & Girls Club of Delaware combine resources to provide afterschool and summer learning experiences for kindergarten through grade 12 youths. Initially, the program was only offered on the DSU campus; in 2015, however, it was expanded to cover more of Kent County by focusing on the Milford and Capital school districts.

Church congregations contribute $29K during Scholarship Sunday

College of Business takes title In its third year of the competition, the Battle of the Colleges saw the College of Business end the two-year championship reign of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences.

Total raised by the College of Business: $17,260 Faculty and staff participation: The COB also won the award for having the highest percentage of faculty and staff donors (71 percent), earning the college an additional $2,500.

Total raised by all of the colleges: $35,699 How does the Battle of the Colleges help? Through the Battle of the Colleges, each college raises discretionary funds that the deans can use to support their colleges’ immediate needs. COB Dean Donna Covington said the college put some of the funds to use right away by assisting a graduating honors student with her remaining balance, allowing her to participate in the May Commencement Ceremony.

The University once again partnered with congregations across the state of Delaware and the region for the fourth annual Scholarship Sunday initiative.

Generous offerings were collected during March and April in support of scholarships for DSU students.

$10K INEZ O. MEANS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP WILL ASSIST NURSING MAJORS

A $10,000 endowed scholarship benefiting nursing majors at DSU has been established as a tribute to the late Inez O. Means, a strong supporter of the University. Jimmy Means of New Castle, Del., the husband of Mrs. Means, presented the check to President Harry L. Williams on April 13, which would have been her 64th birthday. Mrs. Means, who operated a hair salon in New Castle County, was studying to become a nurse when she was stricken with cancer. Mr. Means, the owner of a fire and security alarm business, said he established the Inez O. Means Endowed Scholarship in honor of his wife of 40 years’ legacy and spirit, as well as the lifelong respect they both have had for DSU. Also taking part in the check presentation was the Means’ adopted son, Trevor Skinner.

Bowden majored in Chemistry and minored in Computer Science and Biology. His major brought him under the watchful eye of Dr. Harriet Williams, the longtime head of the institution’s Department of Chemistry, who in addition to guiding him in his academic work, introduced him to Dr. Charles Waples, a Philadelphia physician and Del State alumnus.

“He was actually the first black physician I ever met,” said Bowden, who ended up doing summer externships with Waples.

Bowden said that when the externship first started, he initially tried to stay with a relative in inner city Philadelphia.

“But I couldn’t sleep there because of the gunshots,” he said.

“Dr. Waples told me to come and stay with him, and for three summers I lived at his home in Media, Pa.” Bowden said his DSC classes, his cancer research work under Dr. Ofosu and his externship with Dr. Waples, along with a parttime job at Sears, were the sum total of his DSU undergraduate experience with little time for other extracurricular pursuits. His strong focus on his major was reflected at the end of his senior year, when he graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Although he was accepted by other medical schools, it would be Howard University where he would not only earn his 1993 M.D., but also meet his future wife. He and Dr. Nicole BramwellBowden now have a 12-year-old daughter, Maaliyah. “She’s a future Hornet; it’s already been decided,” he said.

After initially working as a family medicine physician for three years in Portsmouth and Norfolk, Va., he and his wife made a permanent career move to central Florida in the late 1990s. While his spouse would eventually land a job with the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital in Orlando where she became division chief, Reginald would practice medicine for 13 years at the Halifax Crosslin Health Center (HCHC) in Daytona Beach, Fla. In addition to working as a practicing physician at Halifax, Bowden also served as an associate professor for its residency program as well as the director of the Daytona Beach Sickle Cell Center (also connected to HCHC).

From 2007 to 2012, he moved over to HCHC’s Emergency Department, a Level II Trauma Center noted for being one of the busiest emergency centers in Florida.

Apopka, has worked with pre-medicine, pharmacy and science students at Bethune-Cookman University and has shared his expertise in that institution’s Physician Office Training Program.

When thinking of his higher education experiences at Del State and at Howard, he said that DSC stands out.

“Delaware State gave me so many opportunities and opened so many doors for me, it stays in my heart,” Bowden said.

According to Dr. Mildred Ofosu, the wife of Dr. Gustav Ofosu, Bowden has remained close to her husband. “Gus has always been extremely proud of Reginald’s accomplishments as a physician,” said Mildred, who also worked at DSU from 1983-2002 in the Department of Biology and as an assistant vice president of Sponsored Programs. “Gus thinks of Reginald as an adoptive son.

They love and respect each other, and are the best of friends.”

Bowden noted while he benefited from Del State’s closeknit nurturing environment, Howard University, on the other hand, was especially competitive. “Howard gave me thick skin and prepared me to handle anything that was thrown at me,” Bowden said. “I worked alongside resident physicians from Harvard, Yale and other big-named schools; I not only could hang with them, but found I could also outperform them and I became chief resident over them.”

Bowden is a DSU alumnus who financially gives back to his alma mater, something he said he learned early on from his mentor.

“Dr. Waples instilled in me that I should not only give back, but also that I should be a mentor as well as provide good students to the school,” he said. “Giving back is important because it helps keep the roots of the institution strong.”

Alum follows his acting dream with role on Orange is the New Black Normally a DSU graduate ending up within a women’s prison setting would not sound so admirable. However, Germar T. Gardner ’03 has made it a winning career move.

Gardner, who earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications (Print Journalism/TV Production), has had a recurring role on the hit Netflix series Orange is the New Black.

Now taping its fourth season, Gardner has starred as correctional officer Charles Ford in the second and third seasons of the online comedydrama series about life in a federal women’s prison. The show has garnered numerous awards, including three Primetime Emmys.

Gardner described his journey to the acting profession as a combination of good fortune and

following his dreams with perseverance.

“I have always wanted to act since I was a little kid,” Gardner said. “But when I told my father, he told me I would be better off picking another vocation.”

That acting desire remained dormant in the back of his mind until around the time he was ready to graduate from DSU, when he had the chance to portray a character in a production for a friend trying to get into film school.

After earning his degree, he returned home to Bridgeport, Conn., and worked as a teacher until 2008. When that job ended, he decided to explore acting and signed up for classes with Allan Gordon, a Broadway producer.

His acting breakthrough came in 2011 when

Anita Jarman ’09 Alumna helps students get hands-on international experience in their fields As an undergraduate mass communications major, Anita Jarman took advantage of a study abroad opportunity in Beijing, China, where she interned as a journalist at the 2008 Olympics.

Now two degrees later, Jarman is working to give other undergraduate students the lifechanging experience that time spent among other cultures can bring.

Jarman — who has a 2009 Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications (Public Relations) from DSU and a 2011 Master of Professional Studies in Sports Industry Management from Georgetown University — has launched the Ji Li Project Institute, which has been established to open the doors of educational opportunities in the field of global business development.

Jarman facilitated a two-week trip to China for three DSU students — Leandra Abreu, Porshia Brewer and Jamila Mustafa.

“We trained them how to digitally document their experience, they were exposed to a professional network in China in which they were able to focus on a specific area, and then they were able to publish their experience on the Ji Li website,” Jarman said. “When they graduate, they will be able to show prospective

Kenneth A. Carter kicked off his inaugural season as Delaware State University’s head football coach September 5 against the Liberty Flames in Lynchburg, Va. After games September 12 vs. Kent State in Ohio and September 19 vs. Chowan at home, the Hornets begin MEAC competition October 3 at home vs. Morgan State.

After serving as an assistant coach at some of the nation’s top major college programs, what attracted you to DSU? I was impressed with the University administration’s commitment to building a winning program. I was also encouraged by the administration’s willingness to hear my views on the program and what it would take to be successful in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and FCS (Football Championship Subdivision) in general. I’m excited to begin my head coaching career at Delaware State University.

What were some of the pleasant surprises and challenges you faced upon taking the job?

First of all, there are some outstanding young men in our program who are eager to learn and improve. The greatest challenge was convincing everyone to accept a new standard for themselves and the team. We have made changes in nearly every area of the program, and everyone is held accountable. We also faced the challenge of becoming a stronger, faster and more aggressive team. I can say without hesitation that the vast majority of the guys have bought in and are already reaping the benefits.

You have worked with some of the biggest names and successful programs in college football. What did you learn from those experiences that you bring to DSU? The great coaches and programs I’ve worked with are successful for a reason, and I’ve tried to take a little from each throughout my career. Urban Meyer (employed Carter at Florida; now head coach at Ohio State) is a great organizer and master of the kicking game, in addition to being a tremendous strategist and recruiter.

Charlie Strong (hired Carter at Louisville; now head coach at Texas) is a defensive genius, motivator and manager of personnel. Bobby

ATHLETICS Johnson (Vanderbilt head coach while Carter was an assistant there) is a great manager of people and big-picture thinker, while Joe Paterno (Penn State) was ahead of his time in understanding how to develop and build your brand.

The 2014 MEAC race ended in a five-way tie for first place. Two of those first-place teams, Morgan State and North Carolina Central, were guided by new head coaches last season. Given that, what are your expectations for this year’s Hornets?

It appears the MEAC race will be wide open again this season. Our talk to this point has focused on getting better each and every day.

We’re committed to doing all the big and little things that it takes to build a winning program.

I believe if we take care of our business on and off the field, the wins will come. Every day, I get more excited about the prospects for this team.

You have made an effort from day one at Delaware State to reach out to former Hornet players, all alumni and the community. Why is that outreach so important and what can those who accept your invitation to support the team expect to see from your program?

Alumni and community support are critically important to successful programs. In addition to providing much-needed resources, they can serve as critical contacts for recruiting. We are reaching out to those groups, in addition to area high schools, in an effort to build a base of support for the team and the University in general.

A winning football team draws a great deal of attention to Delaware State University and the many outstanding programs it has to offer. I believe we are building a team that the University and supporters can be proud of. We are strongly emphasizing the need to bring in student-athletes who are as committed to their academics and community service as they are to the game. We want our players to support all other Hornets teams and serve as campus leaders.

On the field, fans can expect a hard-nosed team that plays smart and with a great deal of energy.

My staff and I are working extremely hard to ensure that the team is well-prepared for each and every game. I think our fans are going to be pleased with the Hornets this season and the years to come.

Barbara Burgess was a women’s basketball star at Delaware State from 1985 to 1989.

For new coach, a welcome home Hornet great Barbara Burgess ’90 returns to her alma mater to lead women’s basketball One of the greatest players in Delaware State University women’s basketball history has returned to her alma mater as the ninth head coach of the Lady Hornets.

Burgess, who starred for the team from 1985 to 1989, most recently served as an assistant coach at DSU’s highly successful Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference rival Hampton University the past six seasons. During Burgess’ tenure, the Lady Pirates won a MEAC-record five consecutive tournament championships from 2009 to 2014. Hampton posted an overall record of 146-48 (.753), including an 88-8 mark (.917) in MEAC regular season play, and won 54 consecutive games vs. league opponents (including tournament games) while she served with the program.

“We believe that Barbara’s championship experience at Hampton, along with the intensity and passion she developed in her playing days with the Lady Hornets, will greatly benefit our women’s basketball program,” President Harry L. Williams said.

Prior to her time at Hampton, Burgess served one season as an assistant coach at Norfolk State University (2008-09). She was head women’s coach at Virginia Union University from 1999-2001 and head girls coach at Phoebus High School in Hampton, Va. (2002-08) and Huguenot High School in Richmond, Va. (1992-98).

Burgess earned a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education from Delaware State in 1990. She also has a 2011 Master of Science in Sports Management and Intercollegiate Athletics Administration from California University of Pennsylvania.

Three assistant coaches — Vanessa Watson, Beverly Lockett and Donell Thomas — were also recently added to the program.

Thomas is a former Hornets men’s basketball standout (1989-93) who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation from DSU.

$450,000 NCAA grant will enhance academic support for athletes The DSU Department of Athletics recently received a $450,000 NCAA grant to support its academic programs that are designed to help student-athletes. The grant was part of more than $4 million that the NCAA awarded to nine Division I schools to help them improve the academic success of their studentathletes. The goal is to support efforts to meet the requirements of the Division I Academic Performance Program, which was developed to ensure that schools provide an environment that supports education while enhancing the ability of student-athletes to earn a degree. The comprehensive grants will be distributed over a three-year period and used to fund increased academic support services staffing and space, technology upgrades (software and hardware), career planning and increased availability of summer financial aid for student-athletes.

Student-athlete academic successes celebrated TEAMS ACHIEVE COMBINED 3.13 GPA DSU’s 17 sports teams posted a combined grade point average of 3.13 (on a 4.0 scale) for the 2014-15 academic year. Thirteen Hornet teams achieved GPAs of at least 3.0, highlighted by six women’s programs at 3.3 or higher. The DSU softball squad led the way with a 3.44 team GPA. The golf team was a close second at 3.43, followed by equestrian at 3.40. The cross country team was tops on the Hornet men’s side with a 3.19 team GPA.

72 NAMED TO MEAC COMMISSIONER’S ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM A total of 72 DSU student-athletes have been honored by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference for their work in the classroom. The Hornet athletes are among 1,096 from the 13 MEAC schools named to the 2015 Commissioner’s All-Academic Team, which honors non-freshman student-athletes with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

BOWLING, FOOTBALL TEAMS HONORED  The Hornet bowling team has been saluted by the National Collegiate Athletic Association for achieving a perfect score of 1,000 for its fouryear Academic Progress Rate, the first program in school history to earn the distinction. The DSU bowlers are among a select group of Division I teams to rank in the top category of 980-to1,000 APR score for the last four years.  DSU’s football program was recognized by the Division I Football Championship Subdivision Athletics Directors Association for achieving the highest APR score among MEAC grid programs in the last four years.

The Academic Progress Rate holds Division I institutions accountable for the academic progress of their student-athletes through a team-based metric that accounts for the eligibility and retention of each student-athlete for each academic term. Currently, all DSU teams meet APR standards.

Two named to baseball All-MEAC First Team Senior center fielder Charles Dailey and junior shortstop Cameron Onderko were selected to the 2015 All-MEAC First Team. Dailey was tops in the MEAC in hitting (.365), runs per game (1.00) and slugging percentage (.596), while ranking second in the league in home runs (7) and triples (4) and fifth in on-base percentage (.438) during the regular season. Onderko was second in the MEAC in walks (31) and fourth in on-base percentage (.441). He was fifth among Hornet regulars with a .302 batting average, third on the team in RBI (26) and fifth in home runs (3) during the regular year.

Hornet softball clinches 2nd straight MEAC North title Under new head coach Amber Jackson, the Hornet softball team celebrated a second straight MEAC North championship in 2015 with a 14-4 league record, a school-record 14-game win streak and a victory over Virginia of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Freshman Vanessa Washington took the conference by storm, earning MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year and All-MEAC Second Team honors. A

fter many years of research, a link between Delaware State College and the Tuskegee Airmen has been established.

In the 1930s, in anticipation of possible conflict, several European nations built up their air forces in part by training civilians as pilots in anticipation of possible conflict. In the United States, a similar program, known as the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP), began in 1938. President Franklin D. Roosevelt supported the CPTP’s plan to train 20,000 civilian pilots per year. He believed this plan would create a pool of potential military pilots if the United States entered World War II. The CPTP eventually operated at 1,132 colleges and universities and 1,460 flight schools throughout the United States and trained 435,165 pilots from 1939 to 1944. Under this program, several hundred African-Americans were given a chance to prove themselves and earn their pilot wings.

Six historically black colleges — Tuskegee Institute, Delaware State College, Hampton Institute, Howard University, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and West Virginia State College — were chosen to take an active part in the CPTP. Tuskegee Institute rapidly expanded and became one of the government’s largest and most important contractors.

Tuskegee administrator George L. Washington played a pivotal role by introducing, establishing and managing the flying program at Tuskegee from the beginning of the CPTP through the end of World War II. Delaware State College, being much smaller than Tuskegee, operated on a smaller scale and participated in the CPTP for three years. Ten students were certificated the first year and 20 the second. Precise numbers of individuals who went into secondary training is not known.

Records identify the following individuals as Delaware State College CPTP graduates in June 1940: George Ayers, Fred Cephas, Hallie Coleman, Maxwell Honemond, Edward King, Wilmer Mills, Frederick Parker, Norman Travis, Robert Williams and Charles Wright. January 1941 graduates were: John Bishop, Leroy Cawthon, Roland Gibbs, Charles Gowens, John Henson, Nehemiah Kelson, Charles Leatherbury Jr., Jacob Myers, Willis Powell and Eben Short. May 1941 graduates were: Melvin Blechman, Edwin Crocker, Walter Eley, Arthur Elliott, James Hancock, Orange Johnson, Warren Pritchett, John Scotton, William Turner and George Vapaa.

It has been determined that one graduate of DSC’s June 1940 CPTP class — Honemond — became a Tuskegee Airman.

Honemond graduated from liaison pilot training on Dec. 7, 1943, at Tuskegee. He trained at Griel Field, one of the airfields operated by the Army Air Forces at Tuskegee. Some training probably also occurred at Kennedy Field at Tuskegee, and Honemond would have flown Piper and Waco-type aircraft.

Following his training at Tuskegee and Fort Sill, OK, he earned the distinction of being one of only 51 African-American liaison pilots trained in World War II. He served as a pilot with the 351st Field Artillery Battalion in Italy. After the war, he returned to DSC and completed his Bachelor of Science degree in June 1947. Delaware State College played a pivotal role in the development of many African-American aviation pioneers.

Their successes and triumphs paved the way to the integration of the Armed Services in 1947 and led to the path of expanding civil rights for many African-Americans.

Florida chapter formally established The Florida Chapter of the Delaware State University Alumni Association, soon to be known as the Sunshine Chapter, was charted May 16 during the DSUAA’s annual meeting.

Sussex County Alumni Chapter DSUAA Bylaw Amendment Effective July 1, 2015

National dues for Class A members shall be $50 per year. Five dollars from dues for Class A members shall be placed in the Legacy Scholarship Fund and $5 shall be given to the Delaware State University Foundation to increase alumni giving.

The Kent County Chapter in 2015 has a financial membership of more than 75 members. It is constantly encouraging membership and has a current goal of 100 members.

CLASS NOTES 1980s Cheryl Tibbets ’84 has been named regional director of Clinical Services for Delaware for Exceptional Living Centers. Tibbets received a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Delaware State University.

Frank Burton Jr. ’85 has written an autobiography, From FBI Agent to an Apostle: Saga of a Spiritual Sniper, about his life experience and how one Apostolic encounter changed his entire life. A retired FBI special agent, Burton is also an apostle, senior pastor and founder of Perfect Will Ministries in New Castle, Del. Dwayne Henry ’85 has been named the head football coach at Seaford (Del.) High School. Henry was previously assistant athletic director for compliance at Coppin State University. A DSU football standout, Henry also served as an offensive backfield coach and offensive coordinator for the Hornets and has held other high school-level coaching positions.

Matthew Horace ’85, senior vice president and chief security officer at FJC Security Services and a 27-year veteran of state, local and federal law enforcement, recently has served as a recurring on-air law enforcement and security analyst on Time Warner and major networks, providing commentary on national crime-related news stories.

Dan Candeloro ’88 has been named the head football coach at Caesar Rodney (Del.) High School. Also a physical education teacher at the school, Candeloro previously worked with special needs students at the district’s John S. Charlton School. He received a bachelor’s degree in Health and Physical Education from Delaware State University.

Capt. Lavencion Starks ’89 recently assumed command of U.S. Naval Hospital Rota, Spain. Since entering the Navy in 1989, Starks was deployed with the 1st Medical Battalion during the Persian Gulf War and twice with USS New Orleans and USS Essex. In 1997, he became the first male nurse to hold the position of White House Nurse. He continued on to be a senior nurse officer at Branch Medical Clinic Atsugi, Japan, and director of clinic support services at U.S. Naval Hospital Yokosuka, Japan. Most recently, he was executive officer of U.S. Naval Hospital Naples, Italy. Starks earned a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Delaware State University.

1990s Historian and curator Dr. Jude Pfister ’91 published his latest book, Morris County’s Acorn Hall, in May with The History Press. The book is a biography of the Hall and of the families who called it home before it became the much-admired historic site it is today.

Marc Stevens ’92 has been named dean of students at Randallstown (Md.) High School, a position in which he will be responsible for the school’s discipline program and assist the administration with functions and activities.

Stanley Burris ’95 has been named head football coach at Polytech (Del.) High School. Burris previously was an assistant coach at Polytech and several other central Delaware high schools, most recently Smyrna. A DSU Athletic Hall of Fame inductee in 2013, Burris was a two-time All-MEAC and Black College All-America Third Team offensive lineman for the Hornets.

Dr. Darlene M. Eberhardt-Burke ’95 won the 2015 Excellence in Teaching Award at North Carolina Central University and was recognized at commencement with an award and monetary prize. She is currently the chair and an associate professor in the Department of Human Sciences at NCCU. Suzanne E. Sebastian ’95 has joined the Delaware Sustainable Energy Utility as its program manager. Sebastian previously managed Delaware’s Green Energy Program and served as the Delaware Clean Cities coordinator.

She received a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Delaware State University and an associate’s degree from Goldey Beacom College.

Former Hornet baseball star and Major League Baseball player Pedro Swann ’95 is a member of the 2015 Camden (N.J.) Riversharks coaching staff. Swann previously spent two seasons as head baseball coach for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks.

2000s April (Winstead) Taylor ’03 has joined Diamond State Financial Group in Newark, DE, as a financial adviser. Taylor earned a bachelor’s degree in Finance and Business Administration from Delaware State University and has more than 12 years of experience in the field.

Ernest Hudson ’05, a family and consumer science teacher at Appoquinimink High School in Middletown, Del., was one of 38 educators nationally to receive the 2015 ProStart Educator of Excellence Award from the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation. Hudson was nominated by the Delaware Restaurant Association as its Delaware Educator of Excellence Award winner.

Jessica L. Dubois ’08 was recently promoted to assistant vice president and store manager of TD Bank in Rehoboth Beach, Del. Dubois has six years of retail banking experience. She joined TD Bank in 2009 as a teller and later served as a head teller before her most recent position as officer, assistant store manager in Rehoboth Beach.

Jarin Giesler ’09 and Kellen Kemp ’11 are working with a company to help bring American football to New Zealand. The former teammates are North America directors for the project, which would provide exhibition games in the island nation for players on the cusp of a National Football League roster; two games will be hosted next March. A certified National Football League Players Association contract advisor, Giesler also serves as the general counsel for the group. Kemp, the offensive line coach at Del-Val Charter in Pennsylvania, also works at Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and assists his friend at Giesler Sports World-Wide.

2010s Dr. Brenda G. Wynder ’12 has been named superintendent of the Lake Forest (Del.) School District. Wynder, an educator for 25 years, was most recently the district’s curriculum administrator. She is also formerly an elementary school principal and a middle school and high school mathematics teacher. Wynder received an Ed.D in Educational Leadership from Delaware State University.

Jenayah Mathis-Minnigan ’13 received a Master of Arts in Communications from Nathan Weiss Graduate School in May. MathisMinnigan earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications from Delaware State University.

Domonique Williams ’13 has opened a restaurant, Brunch N’Lunch, in downtown Dover. Williams received a bachelor’s degree in Hospitality and Tourism Management from Delaware State University.

Jolethea Downs ’15, a dental laboratory technician, spent a month in Peru this summer on a missions trip volunteering in a hospital and interning at a dental office. She plans to attend dental school next year. In August, she competed in the Miss Black USA pageant, aiming to encourage and inspire young women that they can do whatever their hearts desire.

BASKETBALL | Former Hornet basketball stars Kendall Gray ’15 and Tyshawn Bell ’15 have taken their talents to European professional leagues. Gray recently signed a contract to compete for medi Bayreuth of Beko BBL, the highest domestic basketball league in Germany; he competed for the National Basketball Association Detroit Pistons summer league team in July. Bell inked a deal with WBC Raiffeisen Wels, a team in the Austrian professional league.

Amere May ’15 also took the first step this summer in pursuit of a career as a member of the NBA Chicago Bulls summer squad.

FOOTBALL | Former Hornet football starters Rodney Gunter ’14 and Milton Williams III are pursuing their National Football League dreams. Gunter, a former DSU defensive lineman, was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the fourth round of the NFL Draft. Williams, a former Hornet wide receiver, inked a three-year free agent deal with the Oakland Raiders. Gunter is the Hornets’ highest draft pick (116th) since receiver John Taylor was selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round in 1986.

BASEBALL | Former Hornet Aaron Nardone ’14 batted .329 (55-for-167) with 10 doubles, eight triples and five home runs as a rookie with the White Sands Pupfish of the independent Pecos Professional Baseball League in Texas this summer. He also stole seven bases in 10 attempts during the season. Former DSU catcher Eddie Sorondo ’14 spent time this season with the Camden (N.J.) Riversharks of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball.
