Looking back to move forward

“Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” These words from philosopher George Santayana have never been more relevant than they are today. This winter, your Library is embarking on two projects that will help us learn more about our history.

The first is “Delaware County Veterans History,” a new website and archive spearheaded by Cindi from the Orange Branch Library.

We are actively searching for stories, records, and photographs from veterans, their families, and their friends, so that the patriotism and dedication of our veterans is never forgotten. Visit www.delawarelibrary.org/services/veterans for more information.

In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday in January, we will feature an exhibit called “Telling a People’s Story.” This is the first major museum exhibition of the art found within the pages of African-American children’s books. Organized by Miami University, this multi-panel exhibit uses art to examine the diversity of the Black experience in America through cultural, historical and social lenses. Please join us on these journeys!

COVER STORY The Library is certainly not hibernating this winter, we’re busier than ever! This issue of Check It Out features Jenny Ho, Assistant Orange Branch Manager - Youth Services as she prepares for Winter Reading Club and the Telling a People’s Story exhibit.

The Telling a People’s Story exhibit will be on display at Delaware Main Library in January and Orange Branch Library in February. The exhibit celebrates African-American children’s illustrated literature. There are several programs for families in the beginning of 2022 in conjunction with the exhibit as we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday and Black History Month.

And the Winter Reading Club is back! For every four books you read or programs you attend, you can fill out a bookmark and enter to win a prize basket! There are four baskets at each location. One for babies, one for kids, one for teens, and one for adults. You can enter as often as you can fill out the bookmarks!

With two stops at DCDL libraries, this is an exhibition devoted to the art within African-American children’s picture books.

The selection of approximately 130 works features more than 30 artists, spanning nearly 50 years of creativity.

Organized by the Miami University Art Museum through a grant from the Martha Holden Jennings Foundation, for the first time, African-American children’s illustrated literature is the focus of a museum exhibition featuring art produced for book illustrations.

This presentation of this genre offers a lens into the cultural, historical, and social makeup of African-American cultural identity, while also shedding light on the long-neglected world of African-American authors and illustrators in the pantheon of children’s literature.

EARLY LITERACY TIP

by Hillary Scholz Youth Services Librarian Winter’s a good time to stay in and cuddle! Here are some great ways to fill the shorter, colder days with reading, writing, singing, talking, and playing!

Read: The Winter Reading Club is here! For every

4 books that you read to your child, fill out a Winter Reading Club bookmark, and enter to win one of our super cool raffle baskets! Refresh your reading materials by using our Personalized Picks service or asking a librarian for help.

Write: Scribbling is one of the earliest forms of writing. Ask your child to “read” what they have written.

Sing: Sing familiar songs at different speeds. Songs like “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” and “Open, Shut Them” can be sung fast and slow. Sing faster and faster, and then slower and slower. Do this during cleanup time for some extra, silly fun.

Talk: Play a rhyming game! Name a word and see if your child can name others that

rhyme with it. Made up words count too! It’s all about recognizing similar sounds in the word.

Play: While it can be a little chilly, winter brings a lot of fun things to do outside! Build a snowman, paint in the snow, or make a homemade bird feeder out of pipe cleaners and cheerios. You can also stay warm and toasty inside. Make puppets from paper bags and extra craft supplies and set up a home theater! When you play together, it’s sure to be a great time.

Take a Peek Inside Liberty Branch Library These incredible renderings of the Liberty Branch Library were created by our wonderful architects at SHP. These are the current plans for the interior of the Library.

The learning stairs create an engaging space for programs and presentations and lead into the basement where we have a large meeting room and gathering spaces.

Come on in! We hope you feel welcomed and ready to explore when you step into the lobby of the Liberty Branch Library.

Just past the main lobby, you’ll find a bright wall of windows welcoming you to the children’s area and large print collection.

The children’s area will be filled will all the stories, technology, and family fun you know and love at DCDL. It will have access to a children’s garden for outdoor activities.

At the top of the stairs or elevator, you’ll find an information desk and our adult collection as well as study rooms and a quiet reading room.

The teen room is enclosed and contains the Young Adult collection, programming space and technology for teens to expand their horizons.

We are so excited to open this new Library and get to share it with you all. We’re hoping to welcome you into this new space in Fall 2022.

Discovery Bags are available to in-home daycare providers to further our mission of Early Literacy.

Discovery Bags contain educational resources, books, DVDs, games, toys, and information on a variety of themes including insects, farm animals, food, fairy tales and more. For older children in daycare, the Outreach staff will put together Kids Crates. A collection targeted to the ages and interests of the children is delivered monthly.

Collecting Veteran Stories If you, a relative, or someone you know has served in any branch of the armed forces, and has a connection with Delaware County, we would love to hear from you!

We are actively adding stories, records and photographs to our files.

The Delaware County Veteran History project seeks to gather, preserve and make accessible the experiences of all county veterans.

What Is The Maker studio?

The Maker Studio is a project of the Delaware County District Library where people of all ages can make, invent, create, build, and learn. Bring your ideas to life using our tools, equipment, and software, including 3D printers, sewing machines, vinyl cutter, laser cutter/engraver, Adobe Creative Cloud, and more.

Lab Pricing Usage of the machines and tools in the Maker Studio is free, however there is a small fee for materials.

Master the Maker Studio Beginning January 2022, the Maker Studio is shifting to become a Do It Yourself space.

To assist with your journey through all the tools in the Maker Studio, we’re introducing the Maker This means all the Studio Passport! This equipment and tools are guide will introduce you now available for you to all the methods and to bring your dreams to classes needed to fully reality yourself! (Don’t master the space. worry, staff will still be there to lend a hand.)

You can pick the passport up and collect your first stamp when you get a tour of the Maker Studio and all its gadgets.

Complete every task in the booklet and we’ll help you make a custom, one of a kind commemorative item with the machines available.

(But you’ll be an expert by then so you could probably make it yourself!)

by Bridget Dailey Youth Services Specialist The Telling a People’s Story exhibit features the art from lots of different children’s books. I’ve picked three of my favorites to share here, but you can learn more about this exhibit on page 9.

Ruth and the Green Book

by Calvin Alexander Ramsey

Ruth and her family are traveling across the country together in their new sea mist green automobile. During the drive the family experience racial discrimination in a 1952 America, but along the way come across The Negro Motorist Green Book, a book created to help Black people find safe places where they are welcome to eat, sleep, and shop. Told through the perspective of a young child, Ramsey is able to deliver a heartwarming and infuriating story about a serious issue in a racially divided America. With minimal detailing, young readers will be able to digest the events at their own pace. An exceptional read for ages 7 to 11.

She Loved Baseball: The Effa Manley Story

by Audrey Vernick

Effa Manley had perseverance, grit and a special kind of love for baseball. As an advocate for civil rights and a woman working for the Negro National Baseball League, Effa pushed through when told, “That’s just the way things are.” This juvenile biography gives snippets of Effa’s life’s work, just enough to make you want to dig for more. With descriptive text and engaging illustrations, readers of all ages will enjoy this out of the park story. Great for ages 5 to 10.

Beautiful Blackbird by Ashley Bryan

An adaptation from the folktale of Ila-speaking people of Zambia, Ashley Bryan has created a Coretta Scott King award winner through vibrant, bold illustrations and beautiful storytelling. Blackbird is seen as the most beautiful bird, but sapped with envy, the other birds beg to be like Blackbird. Blackbird shares the gift of color but insists, “Color on the outside is not what’s on the inside,” and “Just remember, whatever I do, I’ll be me and you’ll be you.” A bright and colorful read for ages 3 and up.
