CHECK IT OUT

Keeping you connected to the Delaware County District Library.

www.delawarelibrary.org

Fall into a FRESH START at DCDL Some people love the summer, others enjoy the winter, but my favorite time of the year is coming up right now. I just love the autumn. Maybe it’s because I enjoyed school, or maybe it was because my mother was a teacher, but autumn has always seemed to me to be the right time for new beginnings. When school started, the world was a blank piece of paper, and we could write our own future on it. So this might be the right season for you to try something new at your library. If you only check out print books, this might be a good time to try an ebook or an audiobook. If you haven’t tried graphic novels, you probably haven’t discovered the amazing variety of history, science, biography, and even philosophy available in this rapidly expanding genre. You can also stream classic movies, music, and even old television shows right to your computer, tablet or smart phone through Hoopla and Kanopy. And if you’ve never been to a comic convention, I know you’ll want to check out our 4th annual Great Geek Fest at the Delaware Library on October 19th. Year ‘round, the Delaware County District Library is the spot for finding your next great idea!

COVER STORY This issue of “Check It Out” stars Orange Branch Library Reference Specialist Luke Powers. A founding member of the Great GeekFest, Luke is an avid Star Wars fan and is pictured in his Jedi finest. Luke has curated and hosted the screening room at the GeekFest for the past 3 years. He is also a foodie who hosts the Orange Branch Library Cookbook Club. His specialty is barbecue! This year the Great GeekFest is back on October 19. It’s got something for nerds and geeks of all ages and all fandoms. While not required, cosplay is highly encouraged. In fact, the cosplay contest that wraps up the day is one of the most highly anticpated parts of the Great GeekFest, and the prizes are fantastic. We’ll be geeking out over everything from Dungeons & Dragons to Harry Potter to anime and everything in between. Stop by our vendor alley and pick up something to make your life even more geeky, as well. We hope to see you all in your cosplay best on Saturday, October 19 from 10:00am to 5:00pm. STAFF REVIEW by Rachael Clukey Reference Librarian

In a Dark, Dark Room and Other Scary Stories by Alvin Schwartz

Recommended for ages 7 and up This early reader collection of short stories was written by the creator of the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series. The stories are spooky enough for the youngest horror lover but can also scare many older readers, like myself. The illustrations throughout make them even scarier. The spookiest story in the collection had to be The Green Ribbon and it has stuck with me for months.

Thornhill by Pam Smy

Recommended for ages 12 and up This teen novel is told in part wordless art and part written text. Mary’s story is told through journal entries that were written in 1982. She lived in Thornfield, an orphanage at that time. She was a lonely little girl who was bullied a lot. Ella’s story is told in the illustrated part of the book. Ella lives in the present across from Thornhill. Ella was also lonely and discovered what she thought to be a ghost. The stories weave together like that of Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret. Is the ghost a friendly or mean ghost? This teen book proved to be a bit disturbing, but a little confusing at the same time. Read it to find out about Thornhill, Mary and Ella.

The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson

Recommended for adults This ghost story by Shirley Jackson is the scariest book that I have ever read. In this novel, Dr. Montague received permission to study Hill House to write a book about its phenomena. He invited a few others, including the future heir of the house, to observe their experiences. The house truly seemed to come alive, especially to one of the mentally disturbed characters - Eleanor. Did they make it out alive? What happened to Eleanor? You must read this to find out, but do it with the lights on, if at all possible. The works of Shirley Jackson are being adapted as an anthology series for Netflix and The Haunting of Hill House will be told in Season 1.
