From The President Dear De La Salle Collegiate Family, Merry Christmas! On behalf of all of us at De La Salle Collegiate, I want to wish you and your loved ones a blessed and peaceful Christmas. This issue of The Collegiate is our small gift to you.

What makes this issue so special are the many stories found within the issue that highlight the great spirit of generosity that exists among so many in our community. In particular this issue of The Collegiate highlights our alumni and the many good works they have been participating in over the past few months.

In the midst of all of the outside noise that permeates our lives during this time of year lies the reality that the greatest gift of all, God’s own son Jesus, entered our world and in doing so forever changed the course of history. In our own small and ordinary ways, we too are called to be a gift to one another and to make an impact in our world. How do we do that? We make an impact in our world every time we reach beyond ourselves and lend a hand, say a kind word or pray for another, especially to and for those who are at the margins of our society. Just as the infant Jesus came into our world in the most ordinary, unexpected way, we too can be a gift to one another in ways both simple, small and yet so impactful. Our alumni and friends who are featured in this issue of The Collegiate are exemplars of what lies at the heart of a Lasallian secondary education – the Gospel values of Jesus.

Thank you for being a gift to our community during this past year.

The many simple, small and yet oh so meaningful ways you have shown your support for our mission has made all the difference in the lives of our students, faculty, staff, and administration. As 2017 draws near, rest assured of our continued commitment to the five core values of a Lasallian secondary education and rest assured of our commitment to strive to be a gift to one another and to our world.

“Mike Wasik has been an outstanding member of our Christian Brothers’ Dinner Committee for several years, and has provided tremendous leadership in our efforts,” said Chris Czarnik, Director of Advancement. “Michael Brillati has been tremendous, and this will be a seamless transition.”

President John M. Knight echoed Chris’s comments. “We thank Mike Wasik for taking on this leadership role with the Christian Brothers’ Dinner. I am certainly thankful to Michael Brillati for all his years of dedicated service to the school and particularly to the Dinner.”

Mike Wasik says, “It’s an honor to be asked to Chair this important event. Mike Brillati has done a fantastic job for the last ten years or so, and put together quite a committee. With the groundwork he has laid down, I expect success again this year and in subsequent years. I am looking forward to the opportunity to lead the effort.”

Mike will be heading a strong committee that works diligently in the months leading up to the May 4, 2017 dinner. The group not only encourages ticket sales; they also work at finding sponsors, selling advertising, and soliciting silent auction items.

Mike is the owner of the family business, Wasik Funeral Homes, located in Warren and Shelby Township. He is a graduate of Albion College.

Making A Difference Relief for Victims of Hurricane Matthew When Hurricane Matthew hit the East Coast of the United States during early October 2016, numerous disaster relief groups headed to the area to help.

Among those groups was the Civil Air Patrol squadron based at Selfridge ANG, and squadron member Sam Aldea, a senior at De La Salle Collegiate.

Sam returned home on October 21.

Making A Difference The Brothers’ Table - A Letter from Brother Bob Dear Alumni In my mind’s eye, I still see many of you in the Pilots’ hallways and extend to you a “knuckle bump.”

First and foremost, thank you for everything you do to support the Mission of the Brothers at De La Salle Collegiate. As Alumni, you play a vital role in our school community. On behalf of the Brothers, I thank you.

There are many methods we use to serve our students and all of them reflect St. John Baptist de La Salle’s original vision of education. Foremost, we remain committed to serving the disadvantaged and the poor. We know from generations of St. Joe’s and De La Salle graduates that a Catholic, Lasallian Education does, in fact, transform lives. Many of you are examples of this.

I want to tell you briefly about one of the ways we honor an ongoing Lasallian tradition in our school. Our Institute was founded for the children of the working classes and the poor. Poor parents could not afford the time to teach their children, they didn’t have enough schooling themselves, nor could they afford to hire tutors. Our early schools were so successful that the wealthy began to send their sons to our schools. These students shared their lunches with the less fortunate, and de La Salle had to seek donations from the wealthy to keep His schools open.

The present times haven’t changed that much. When De La Salle Collegiate first opened, in 1926, needy students were served breakfast on the Brothers’ back porch. We still assist the poor with Tuition Assistance - this year over $1.5 million. And I have seen some of

our students share their lunches or purchase food for those who can’t afford a decent meal. Our present lunch program does not assist these needy students.

To continue the Brothers’ tradition of serving meals to almost 300 of our needy students, the Brothers’ Community has established a program called “The Brothers’ Table Fund.” In fact, I am proud to say that the Brothers’ Community has made the first gift of $10,000 toward the $50,000 goal. A meal is a most basic necessity, and through this program, we imitate Jesus who fed the hungry while He taught them.

We remain committed to our original, humble mission.

It is at this most basic level that we change moments, transform days, and inspire more fulfilled lives. We together, YOU and I, are engaged in work that really matters - work that has an enduring purpose. The future of De La Salle Collegiate not only rests with the Brothers and their Lay Partners, but also with your generous response in support of The Brothers’ Table. I thank you for your help in making this possible. During this Christmas and New Year’s season, as we celebrate the Gift of Jesus, let us be generous to those who are not as fortunate as we are.

Making A Difference De La Salle Reaches Out When Archbishop Allen Vigneron visited De La Salle Collegiate last spring, he met briefly with President John M. Knight. Mr. Knight told the Archbishop of the De La Salle community’s desire to help with the revitalization of the Church in the City of Detroit. Archbishop Vigneron told President Knight the greatest need was on the East Side, particularly at St. Clare de Montefalco in Grosse Pointe Park. The St. Clare Parish and School also serve a large number of Detroit residents.

President Knight met with the St. Clare Principal Geoffrey Fisher, ‘96, and the Pastor, Rev. Andrew Kowalczyk, CSMA, in late summer to discuss how De La Salle desired to be a good partner with them, particularly for their educational apostalate.

Subsequently, alumni Tom Landa, ‘87, and David Jansen, ‘90, have undertaken a significant wiring and rewiring project at the school and parish offices that has resulted in enhanced internet access.

President Knight said, “Tom and Dave are great examples of De La Salle’s finest. We hope this partnering with St. Clare is the beginning of a deepening relationship with a partner school with which we have a rich history.”

To help reduce the cost of tuition, DLS participates in the SCRIP program. SCRIP is “substitute money” and is just like a “gift card.”

DLS purchases a variety of SCRIP cards from a variety of vendors at a discounted rate, and 75% of that discount, which varies per vendor, is credited to a family’s tuition account. If you are not a current DLS parent, you may still participate in SCRIP, designating the Tuition Assistance Fund as the recipient of your discounted dollars.

SCRIP may be used the same as cash to purchase anything from groceries, fuel, clothing, electronics, or household services. SCRIP may be used at hundreds of local stores such as Kroger’s, Nino’s, Sam’s, Kmart, JC Penney’s, Walmart, Sunoco, Speedway, CVS, and more.

Making a Difference Peter and Connie Cracchiolo Endowed Scholarship In the Fall of 2015, Dr. Peter Cracchiolo, DDS, ‘03, and his cousin, Greg DeMars Jr., ‘00, met with the De La Salle Collegiate Advancement team to discuss their strong desire to remember their grandparents in a significant way, and to remember and celebrate their good works. The conversation resulted in the creation of the Peter and Connie Cracchiolo Endowed Scholarship Fund, an Endowed Scholarship to honor their grandfather, Peter Cracchiolo.

by Peter’s siblings, Matt (‘05), Andrew (‘07), and Mark (‘10) in creating the fund.

They presented the idea to to their grandfather on his 98th birthday on September 12, 2015. Peter passed away November 21, 2015.

The Cracchiolo Scholarship recognizes Peter, and his late wife, Connie, whose generosity continues to be long and inspiring.

“His generosity touched many people and did much to promote Catholic education in Detroit and beyond,” said Greg. “We are truly proud that we have been able to honor their legacy through this scholarship.”

A year later, through the generosity of family and friends, the Cracchiolo Scholarship has raised over $87,000.

The first scholarship grant will be

made in August 2017 and will be approximately $5,000 (half tuition).

President John M. Knight said, “The Cracchiolo Family is wellknown throughout our De La Salle Family. They are one of our ‘legacy families.’ This scholarship is a tribute to Peter and Connie whose good works for many institutions in the greater Metropolitan Detroit area has been significant.”

Making a Difference TUG - The Underserved Group For Joe Szynkowski, ‘80, the lesson was learned 40 years ago, as a De La Salle Collegiate football player. “The coach’s mantra was ‘sudden change.’ We practiced it daily in the context of football. A fumble or an interception represented events that caused SUDDEN CHANGE. And it was an attitude you applied to the game.”

Joe has carried that lesson all these years. To Albion College, where he played football. To facing severe illness in 1983, and being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Sudden change.

Joe went on to become an LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker). He spent 18 years with the federallyfunded Job Corps, working with young people who had been born into challenging circumstances and others who had made poor choices. Many had bad grades - making them ineligible for most scholarships. Joe says that despite their backgrounds, these teens were also resilient - and in need of some help to take that next step in their lives.

Thus, TUG was born.

Building a Track Record

TUG was a group effort of Joe, along with Pilots Billie Wilson, ‘80, and Brian Kelly, ‘80, (both teachers), along with Dan Marsh, ‘81, and Scott Mordell, ‘80 (both businessmen).The group had formed a bond at De La Salle, and together steered the start-up process in 2007.

TUG - The Underserved Group - is a non-profit organization that provides college scholarships to disadvantaged teens in Southeast Michigan. Joe serves as Executive Director.

“Scott Mordell, wise businessman that he is, said it would be important to build a track record. That comment has been our mantra since we began,” said Joe. TUG received an initial grant of $5,000 from the Lear Corporation, and its CEO Matt Simoncini. Joe knew Matt as an opponent on the football field at Bishop Gallagher. “Lear has given us over $12,000 since we started, and Matt and Lear are our biggest financial supporters,” says Joe.

Joe points out that another 1980 classmate, Paul Grimaldi, has also been a strong supporter and contributor from the start. Joe says, “I grew up with Paul, and I think something about TUG must have resonated with him. He is from the old neighborhood in Detroit, and I would say he is a good example of resilience himself. He lives in Washington State,

and is now President of his own company, Lynden Transport, Inc.!

“The GREAT thing about De La Salle was the diverse student body, and the bond you formed at school that still carries us today,” says Joe.

TUG recently celebrated its first graduate, a young woman now working as a nurse, at its first annual award ceremony, put together by Bob Anderson, ‘78.

Two other students, supported with TUG funds, graduated in December with degrees.

The Next Step: Scholarship

TUG seeks low-income, at-risk youth who may have made poor choices, but are taking steps to elevate themselves, and are on the way to overcoming these obstacles. TUG awarded the first “Next Step Scholarships” in 2011.

Students receive $500 per semester, an amount that is renewed, providing the students keep up a C average. TUG also provides mentoring, with a strong case management component.

Thus far, TUG has raised nearly

“I believe we have developed a solid program,” says Joe. “Moving forward, we will be graduating students each year.”

TUG’s most recent fundraiser, in late November, was at the Garden

Bowl/Majestic in midtown Detroit, owned by Dave Zainea, also from ‘80, and his family. Joe recently met with Dave, and arranged for all future TUG fundraisers to be held there, with TUG receiving 15% of bar sales. “This is a good partnership, and Dave’s support is greatly appreciated,” said Joe. TUG plans to provide scholarships to an additional ten students - an aggressive goal - but Joe and the TUG board are determined to raise the necessary funds.

Advancement News Alumni Support the Pilots On and Off Campus

The group gathers at Warwick Hills Golf Club for the 1st Annual De La Salle Golf Scramble.

In early 2016, Mike MacDonald, ‘98, a member of the De La Salle Collegiate Endowment Committee, asked President John M. Knight how he could help the school.

That conversation led to a golf outing. Along with Mr. Ben Clevenger and Mr. Martin Schmid of Northwestern Mutual, President Knight, Mike, and about a dozen friends and alumni gathered at Warwick Hills in Grand Blanc, MI, for a day of golf and fellowship.

President John M. Knight said, “We enjoyed the festivities, and look forward to growing participation at an outing in September 2017.”

Joey Soyad, ‘09, attended the October Alumni Town Hall, and talked with President John M. Knight about his desire to give back to his alma mater. Joe proposed meeting with upperclassmen and giving a presentation on “Things I Wish I Knew Before I Went to College.”

Joey will be working with Principal Steve Stewart and the Counselors to schedule time during the school day during the second semester.

Advancement News New Marketing Committee Formed For several years, one of the committees reporting to the De La Salle Collegiate Board of Trustees was the “Enrollment Committee,” a group focusing on prospective students, with enrollment strategies and implementation being handled “in-house.”

However, during the summer of 2016, after conversations with Director of Admissions Bill Burkhardt, ‘03, President John M. Knight and Greg Shea, ‘83, Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees, the Board created a new “Marketing Committee,” which replaces the Enrollment Committee.

Greg is the Managing Partner and Chief Operating Officer for Campbell Marketing & Communications. He recruited additional committee members, with expertise in Marketing in the business world.

Greg said, “I would characterize our committee’s very existence as an evolution and recognition of the needs of the school, given today’s climate. Catholic education is not as prevalent as it was as recently as 20 years ago. A number of Catholic elementary schools and high schools across Metro Detroit have closed, while public education has made great strides in many school districts, out of necessity, in the competition for state funding.

“Parents face more tough educational choices, and big factors in those choices are tuition costs, the quality of the educational experience as a whole, and the culture in the learning environment.

“In this light, De La Salle needs to continually go through a selfexamination in which we assess and reaffirm who we are and what we bring to families who need us.”

Marsha Hall-Jenkins said, “The Marketing Committee volunteers not only have extensive marketing and communications experience, they also have a deep understanding of the Lasallian Mission. Many of the committee members are alumni who openly credit DLS with helping to shape them into the men they are today - men of faith, intellect, and morality.

“We will offer recommendations to help the school implement marketing and communication programs aimed at enhancing De La Salle Collegiate’s reputation. A strong brand and image lead to enhanced enrollment, fundraising, and key stakeholder engagement - all of which are necessary for the school’s long-term sustainability.”

Darrell Goolsby echoes Marsha’s comments, and notes De La Salle has been very successful and been able to sustain a high enrollment and fundraising thus far in Macomb County, basically through “word of mouth.” He adds, “The Marketing Committee will help better brand De La Salle Collegiate in order to truly compete outside of Macomb County.”

Also a product of Catholic education, Michael Khoury has been President of Detroit Cristo Rey School (at Holy Redeemer Parish in southwest Detroit), since its inception in 2008. Detroit Cristo Rey is sponsored by the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters and the Basilian Fathers.

He is President and CEO of Great Lakes Capital Markets and is also VP of Sales for Aquasight, a company which utilizes real-time intelligence across the entire life cycle of municipal water systems to provide operational and performance efficiencies.

The new Brother Representative is Brother Robert Wickman, FSC. Brother Robert was most recently the Principal at De La Salle Concord in Oakland, CA for nine years. He was also Principal at the Christian Brothers school in Napa, CA, prior to that experience. Currently on sabbatical and living in Brooklyn, NY, Brother Robert will be joining the

Advancement News Provincial staff of the District of Eastern North America (DENA) in January 2017, and working as the DENA Liaison to Boards of Trustees.

He already serves on the Boards of several Lasallian schools in DENA. The New York native joined the Christian Brothers in 1968.

Dr. Moore commented, “Brother Robert brings a high degree of reflection and wisdom from his experiences and I have been consistently impressed with his viewpoints during the various opportunities that I have had to meet him over the past year. We are grateful that he has accepted a position on our Board as I know his services and time are in great demands.”

Darryl and Ryan Tsatsos Memorial Scholarship Tragically, Paul and Julie Tsatsos lost both their sons Darryl, ‘13, and Ryan, ‘15, within months of each other in 2015. Darryl died in a car accident on July 26, and Ryan was killed in a hit and run accident near Central Michigan University on October 31.

As a result of this dual tragedy, Dr. Ray Skowronski, ‘74 and Mrs. Cyndi Popp, two members of the St. Lawrence Faith Community, members of the De La Salle Collegiate Board of Trustees, and friends of the Tsatsos Family collaborated to create an endowed scholarship in their memory.

President John M. Knight said, “Through Ray and Cyndi’s great work, and the generosity of many donors, we now have an Endowed Fund to help perpetuate the memories of Darryl and Ryan.”

Brother Robert replaces Brother Jim Martino, who has taken over as the President of the Ocean Tides School in Narragansett, RI. Of all three new board members, Dr. Moore said, “I strongly believe that their contributions at the Board level will be helpful in working with President John Knight and his team to ensure that De La Salle Collegiate works diligently to imbed timeless Lasallian education and formation in a twenty-first century world .”

In addition to Brother Jim Martino, also leaving the Board due to expired terms were Dr. Richard Herbert and Stephen Brillati. De La Salle Collegiate expresses its thanks and appreciation to each for their many years of dedicated service to our Lasallian Mission.

Academic News DECA Students Drive for More Twenty-two De La Salle Collegiate students who participate in the DECA program (Distributive Education Clubs of America) attended the DECA State Leadership Conference in early November at the Detroit Marriott.

Students attended workshops on public speaking, advertising, marketing, and brand management.

The DECA group at De La Salle, begun just two years ago, has had great success, with three students qualifying for the 2015 nationals, and five qualifying in 2016.

To reach the national level, the students take an online test in December, and then take part in a “role-playing” competition in January against mostly Oakland

DECA Seeks Alumni Businessmen Alumni with business experience are invited to assist DECA with role playing practice in January. Jerry Zaccardelli, ‘75, has helped out for the last few years. Jerry says, “DECA is providing students with the basic training blocks of proposing and supporting arguments on their product or service. As coaches and judges, we are using reallife situations that challenge the students to think on their feet. The students develop a sense of how they need to be prepared for anything, not just what they have learned, but also incorporating creative thinking

to augment their position while still making their point!

“As a judge, I look for not only how the facts are presented, but how the student responds to the challenges of my questions! Well-coached students know there are several ways to respond and often use more than one point to support their position!

It is a real-time response that very often imitates a real-life situation!!”

Academic News New Program Teaches Retail Skills An exciting new program was introduced to students this semester, the Pilot Hangar Student Assistant Program, designed to teach students the inner workings of a retail store.

Seniors Noah Lawrence, Dominic Sciturro, and Michael DeDecker are the first students in this inaugural program.

They are gaining a better understanding of time management, improved money management, merchandising and communication skills, and most importantly, the Seniors Dominic Sciturro, Mike DeDecker, and Noah Lawrence opportunity to make a difference in the bookstore that is our own, The Pilot Hangar.

Students work with the store manager, Mrs. Joann VanderPutten, in a one-on-one setting that allows them to learn the daily operations of the store.

Business Teacher Dennis Koch says, “This is a great opportunity for these students to get some hands-on experience in a real-world setting, and at the same time have the chance to learn skills, communication, time management, security, and money management. The students may count some t-shirts, but they are there to learn and do much more than that.”

To be eligible for the Pilot Hangar Student Assistant Program, students must be a past or current student in at least one Business course, such as Accounting, Banking, IB Business Management, or Advanced Placement Economics.

Dennis adds, “Along with the experience students can gain by being in the Banking class and working

Academic News Steve Stewart Named Principal Assistant Principal Steve Stewart assumed the title of Interim Principal in late June 2016, and with it all of the day-to-day responsibilities of running our school. In early November, President John M. Knight named Steve as Principal.

President Knight says, “I have come to know Mr. Stewart as a man of integrity, compassion, and understanding, and one who embraces the goals of a Lasallian secondary education. Mr. Stewart has the respect and admiration of the Faculty and Staff.

“When I asked Steve to assume the role of Interim Principal, I was hopeful that over the first few months of the school year that it would become clear to me and to my colleagues on the Faculty and Staff that the Interim tag would soon be dropped, and that Steve would simply, and most importantly, serve our school as our Principal,” said Mr. Knight. “Well, that is in fact what has happened. In the midst of a very sensitive and challenging time, Steve has displayed the essential qualities necessary to lead our school in the years to come.”

“I am grateful to him for accepting the opportunities, challenges, joys, and sorrows that accompany the role of Principal.

Although Steve is new to the principal role, he has been an educational leader and administrator at De La Salle since 2004. Steve brings a great deal of experience (academics, instruction, curriculum, teacher evaluations, technology, registrar, and data analysis to name a few) as well as bringing continuity to the Collegiate. He has contributed to many of our initiatives over the years to make De La Salle a better place.

Steve is very excited to continue and expand upon our fantastic educational programs. His initial priorities include getting into the classrooms, linking what students should learn to educational standards, and providing meaningful feedback to students and parents. He is looking forward to working collegially with all of our stakeholders students, parents, teachers, staff, alumni, and the greater community - this year.

“De La Salle’s course is most definitely heading in the right direction,” says Steve. “It is a privilege and honor to work with such dedicated and passionate professionals who put students first. I am blessed.”

“I have every confidence in Mr. Stewart’s continued ability to serve our school as our chief academic officer, and to partner with me and the office of the President in the years to come.”

Steve has degrees from the University of Michigan (B.A. in Political Science and History), Eastern Michigan University (History), and Oakland University (Ed. Specialist in Educational Leadership).

Admissions News Alumni Serve as Admissions Ambassadors The task of keeping De La Salle Collegiate’s enrollment full is a year-round project.

Our Admissions Office team Admissions Assistant, Kevin Fitzhenry, ‘03, Andrea Mason, Administrative Assistant, and myself as Director of Admissions all work together to keep prospective families informed about all the great opportunities to visit De La Salle, learn about our curriculum, and most importantly, what it means to become a Pilot.

The team also includes a much wider team including the Advancement Office, the Academic School with its faculty and staff, the students, parents (both past and present), and our

amazing alumni. All of these people keep the school in front of everyone’s minds because of their #PilotPride.

However, our newest team members are the Admissions Ambassadors, a volunteer group that include parents of current students and recent graduates.

This group of dedicated volunteers assists at all Admissions events to share their unique Lasallian story and how De La Salle Collegiate has benefited their sons. Many of these Ambassadors have the added perspective of also being an alumnus.

Current parents and alumni Jim Bostock, ‘89, and Peter Haun, ‘89, both agreed they wanted to

continue spreading the great work of De La Salle. Even though many of the faces have changed since they were students, the quality of education and the strength of the character development for students has never wavered.

Lasallian News Brothers’ Contact Program Serves Current, Post College Students “Why did you become a Brother?”

It’s the most popular question Brother Francis Eells hears.

As the Vocation Director for the Christian Brothers in the District of Eastern North America (DENA) he hears questions about what Brothers do in their spare time, what do they get paid, and would he like to date.

Over his 25 years as a Christian Brother, Brother Francis has heard these and many more questions, both profound and ridiculous. On some levels the Brothers are as much a mystery today as they were 5, 10, 25 even 50 years ago. For Brother Francis, searching for the next Brothers, answering these questions for young men is key to his job.

For the past three years, when Brother Francis has visited De La Salle Collegiate, he has offered seniors the chance to shadow a Brother’s daily routine to provide an inside look at the

Brothers’ lives. Students have joined the Brothers in Communal Prayer before school, spent a day as a teacher’s aide at St. Clare de Montefalco (in Grosse Pointe Park), and then joined the Brothers for evening prayer and dinner in the Brothers’ House on Gloede.

In October, seniors Dominic Sciturro, Armaan Sison, and Joshua Vaillancourt took up the offer. Brother Francis will meet with them again in the spring to discuss possibly joining a college program that the Brothers run to help students learn more about the vocation without committing to the Brothers’ life.

Today 35 young men, mainly alumni of Lasallian schools, study at 25 colleges across the country while remaining in contact with the Brothers. Most young men have joined the program at the end of senior year, but a growing number are reaching out

as college students and shortly after college graduation to give the Brothers a second look.

Alumni Spotlight Tony Catullo, Class of 1959 More than 60 years after beginning his association with De La Salle Collegiate, Tony Catullo, is still involved with his classmates, organizing luncheons and parties. He began attending the Annual Christian Brothers’ Dinner about ten years ago, at the urging of his fellow classmate the late Gerald Langwerowski, and now serves on the Christian Brothers’ Dinner Committee.

Many of the gift certificates in the Silent Auction at the Dinner are the direct result of Tony’s solicitation of businesses in the area.

“There aren’t many guys like Tony Catullo,” says Director of Advancement, Chris Czarnik. “The pure force of his dedication to friendships formed many years ago is inspiring.”

When Tony worked on his 50th Reunion for the Class of 1959, he contacted Bill Conway, ‘58, for his ship’s bell. At the Class of 1958 50th reunion, Bill had brought the bell to ring once each time for a deceased classmate. Although Tony and Bill were not acquainted in high school, the contact began a friendship which has led to both classes having an annual Christmas party together. Bill says, “Tony is a great guy. He thinks of everybody.”

Tony has recently added “guest speaker” to his resume, speaking with Dennis Koch’s Banking and Accounting classes, and meeting with students preparing for DECA competition during the second semester.

Dennis said, “Tony talked about a variety of business topics. He has so many years of varied experiences. But what really comes across is Tony’s work ethic and dedication to the type of details that give a person the chance to be successful.

And they are all centered around treating people the right way. I think students got a lot from that message.”

The classroom is not an unfamiliar place for Tony, who taught several business classes part-time at Macomb Community College from 1972 - 1984.

Tony graduated from the Detroit Institute of Technology (DIT) in 1966 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing, and a minor in Accounting.

He began his career at Detroit Bank and Trust, then moved into retail, training as a buyer for J.L. Hudson’s and later Crowley-

Tony is also serving on the Lasallian Fund Committee because of what he gained through his De La Salle Collegiate education. “We had great camaraderie, and had great Christian Brothers. I had a strong four years, and enjoyed school immensely. I was on the first DLS Bowling Team to engage in competition with other schools, and we won a trophy! I have no regrets. I have fond memories of the Brothers.”

Alumni News Alumni Town Hall Approximately 30 alumni from various generations gathered at De La Salle Collegiate on October 4 for an “Alumni Town Hall Meeting.”

President John M. Knight said, “The Alumni Town Hall Meeting was an opportunity to share information with our alumni, but more importantly, to receive information from them.”

President Knight said that the alumni provided valuable feedback on what they would be interested in having the Alumni Association do, and of their interest in alumni programs and networking opportunities beyond the Christian Brothers’ Dinner and Alumni Speaker series.

“We also talked about some ways to deepen their bond and connection to their alma mater,” said President Knight. “We wanted to make sure the alumni understand they are important to us, and a valuable part of our community, and we want to continue to partner with them.”

The next steps include a survey of alumni (see info at right) and working with class representatives (see page 27) to put a plan into action.

Look for Our Survey!

One of the outcomes of the recent Alumni Town Hall was a need for the De La Salle Collegiate Advancement and Admissions Departments to better understand alumni attitudes about their DLS experiences, and how alumni presently feel, or don’t feel, connected to the school.

Consequently, we have created an Alumni Survey. In early January, you will be receiving an email, through our Constant Contact system, with a link to an online form to complete the survey, and update your contact information.

Your continued advocacy of De La Salle Collegiate is essential to our success. Whether it be influencing the admissions decision of a future Pilot or providing needed financial support to continue our excellence, alumni make the future of the school possible.

Alumni News Legacy Families Will Gather at Mass De La Salle Collegiate has been blessed with many “Legacy Families” - families where two or more generations of the same family have attended De La Salle Collegiate or St. Joseph’s.

For the past several years, alumni whose sons, grandsons, or nephews are students at De La Salle have been invited to join their relatives at the All-School Liturgy celebrating Catholic Schools Week. The Mass is an opportunity to visibly demonstrate the importance of Catholic education, particularly to these families.

Notably, the Blessing of the Class Rings takes place at this time, symbolic of a young man’s commitment to Lasallian values of a DLS education.

Beginning with this issue, we’d like to feature some of our “Legacy Families,” beginning with the Karam Family.

Mike ‘59, originally attended De La Salle because “my father made me go. But after two weeks, I was really glad he did.”

a student. “I was only at Notre Dame for freshmen year, and transferred to De La Salle my sophomore year when the school moved to Warren.” He goes on to say, “I loved my three years at De La Salle. I made lifelong friends, and it was a great experience. I probably wouldn’t have graduated if I hadn’t gone to De La Salle!”

He has high praise for his son’s De La Salle experiences. “I’m very excited for him. Academics. Sports.

Everything at De La Salle has been great.”

From the time he was a small child, both his grandfather and father talked about De La Salle.

The third-generation Mike, who graduates in May 2017, says he

has really enjoyed his four years, and it’s been even better than he expected.

As for a future fourth-generation Pilot? Mike Karam, ‘17, says, “Absolutely!”

All alumni with sons attending De La Salle Collegiate are invited to attend the Annual Legacy Mass on Thursday, February 2, 2017, in the Bill Fox Gymnasium.

Alumni News Pilots on Campus De La Salle Collegiate President John M. Knight, along with Alumni Director John Monigold, visited DLS Alumni on their college campuses in October and November, meeting on-campus or at nearby locations.

Local DLS and St. Joe’s alumni also joined the gatherings.

President John M. Knight said, “Over the past year, it became clear to all of us in the Advancement Department that we had an opportunity to begin reaching out to young alumni.

We want to stay connected with them, and to make sure they know they are important to us.

We wanted to be able to help them, especially in terms of connections with other alumni. We determined that the best way to reach out was to visit them at their college campuses.”

Grand Valley State University

The visits were to Grand Valley State University (October 26), Michigan State University (November 2), and the University of Michigan (November 9) .

“We were pleased with the turnout, and enjoyed making connections,” said President Knight. “We want to continue to keep connected to our young alumni, and keep them connected to De La Salle, and we want to grow programming to connect alumni.”

Visits are planned to meet with alumni at Northwood University and the University of Detroit Mercy after the first of the year.

Alumni News Dr. Joe Arends, ‘59, recently threw out the first pitch at a Detroit Tigers game at Comerica Park. Longtime Detroit area alumni may remember Joe as the Medical Consultant for WJR Radio, a position he held for 21 years.

Zach Giannetti, ‘15.

Zach Giannetti, ‘15, is currently a sophomore at the University of Michigan, studying Business Administration, Psychology, and Entrepreneurship. He attended the November 9 event on Michigan’s campus.

“I was able to reconnect with faculty and former students and peers. My conversation with President John Knight was particularly rewarding. During our conversation, I shared my professional interests and goals with him. About a week or so later, I received an email from Mr. Knight, connecting me with Mr. Benjamin Clevenger of Northwestern Mutual.

“This connection would not have been possible without the coordination and execution of a successful campus alumni event. I am now being considered for a Financial Representative Internship at Northwestern Mutual - the number one internship program of its kind!

“I thank De La Salle Collegiate, Mr. Knight, and the rest of the faculty and staff for giving so much to me and continuing to inspire me to become the best individual I can be.”

Joe is a graduate of the University of Detroit, and Wayne State University’s Dr. Joe Arends ‘59, second from right, getting School of Medicine. He served ready to throw out the first pitch at a Tiger game. as a flight surgeon for two years at the Naval Air Station in Corpus, Christi, TX, and later practiced in Dallas, TX. Joe also coached amateur baseball for 12 years, winning the National Amateur Baseball Federation College World Series.

The late Henry Chiodini, ‘73, was honored by the Chippewa Valley Schools for his 18 years of dedication and service on the Chippewa Valley Board of Education in ceremonies on Oct. 21.

Henry passed away in 2011, at the age of 56, after a battle with cancer. As Henry ran the scoreboard at home football games at Dakota High School, the Chippewa Valley Schools dedicated the Dakota scoreboard in his memory.

Henry was an active member of the Chippewa Valley Schools Community, and while serving on Henry Chiodini, ‘73 the Board, received the Michigan Association of School Boards Master Board Member Award. He was “a true champion for children who was never afraid to stand up and do what was right for students.”

Bob Dabrowski, SJ ‘60, received a certificate honoring his 40 years of service as a volunteer for the boat races on the Detroit River.

Tony Lamerato, ‘02, has been named Director of Sales at WXYZ-TV. Tony is also serving on the new Marketing Committee (see page 13).

Bartosz Maska, ‘09, graduated in May 2016 from the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, earning a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree. He is now pursuing a Master of Science in Periodontics.

Joe Novak, ‘03, and his wife Stacie, welcomed another Future Pilot on November 18 with the birth of their second son, Joseph (Class of 2034). Young Joseph joins older brother Brady, Class of 2032.

Athletic News Fall Sports Highlights Golf The Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association named De La Salle Collegiate as the top 2016 All-Academic Team in Division 1. The combined GPA of the varsity was. 3.808, nearly .3 higher than the second place team.

Cross Country Coach Doug McKay and varsity golfers as they won their third straight Macomb County title: Nico Ciavaglia (‘16), Joe Taras (‘16), Jonathan Brillati (‘16), Anthony Comito (‘18), and Anton Mays (‘17).

The De La Salle Collegiate Cross-Country team nearly doubled in size from 2015 to 47 boys, with 42 boys actively competing throughout the season.

Coach Sandy Buchanan notes the team’s strength has been in the leadership of the team captains, the bond the boys have developed, and the support of parents. The team routinely drives over 300 miles per week to practices and meets at local parks.

The team fared better this season in CHSL competition, improving from 0-4 to 2-2, beating U. of D. Jesuit by one point, and Orchard Lake St. Mary by 13 points.

The varsity consistently placed in the top five at various tournaments, and finished 8th at the Regional Meet. Of the 42 in that meet, 31 ran a personal best time, showing they peaked at the right time after five months of training and competition.

Despite not placing any runners into the state finals, two carloads of Pilots went and ran the course at the Michigan International Speedway in Jackson, and watched the Division 1 race to know what to expect next year.

Athletic News Fall Sports Highlights Football

The Varsity football team finished 4-5, not “what we had hoped for, but we did build a good foundation,” said Coach Mike Giannone. The team carried 74 players on the varsity squad. Mike noted that DLS played 6 of the nine teams that advanced to the playoffs, and four of those opponents were in the state semi-finals. He said, “Our young men got better each and every week, and even though the results may not have been been in our favor, we gained a ton of experience that will lead us into the future.”

Senior Allen Stritzinger broke ‘86 Alumnus Allen Jefferson’s career touchdown record with 34, and had a total of 224 career points.

Junior Jacob Badalamenti set a school and state record with a 99.5 yard kickoff return against Divine Child.

CHSL Honors were given to these students at the Prep Bowl at Ford Field. John Fisher All-Catholic, Nate Maniaci Academic All-Catholic, Cordell Tannyhill All-Catholic, Stephen Killop All-Catholic, Evan Holland All-Division. Not pictured: Jake Badalamenti All-Division, Jake Madigan All-Division.

Junior Cordell Tannyhill set the single game record with 33 carries against Divine Child.

The JV and Freshmen teams each finished 6-2.

The team begins off-season training in the new year, and Coach Giannone has encouraged students to play other sports. Many have joined the DLS Wrestling Team.

Soccer The DLS Varsity Soccer Team was second in the CHSL, and finished 14-6-2 overall. Coach Reed Friedrichs led the team to the District Championship, with a 4-2 win over Lakeview.

Named All-State were Seniors Nick Buonbrisco, Evan Mitchell, and Chad Schmerheim.

The JV Team record was 6-7-4, and the Freshmen were 2-12.

Athletic News Fall Sports Highlights Tennis After losing many seniors from the 2015 team, Coach Jake Jones had 50 students in the program. The number of open varsity spots made for great competition, and busy practices. The young team had great success against stiff competition, earning All-County All Star recognition.

Coach Jake Jones notes the team’s work ethic. “The team is made up of respectful kids who are always willing to work and are willing to learn. These qualities are evident in their classroom performance as well. The team’s combined 3.75 GPA earned them MHSAA All-State Academic Honors. This is a great bunch of guys that has a bright future!”

Swimming Congratulations to Joseph “Jack” Kucharczyk, ‘16, who earned the status of Scholastic All-American from the USA Swimming Association. A standout swimmer for the Pilots, Jack is swimming at Indiana University.

In a recent email, Jack wrote, My team (Indiana) had 11 Olympians in Rio representing 4 countries, and came back with 6 medals - 3 of them gold. I certainly feel privileged to be a part of such a prestigious program and blessed to be swimming with some of the world’s best swimmers every day, and they have all been so welcoming!! It is a lot of hard work, both in and out of the pool.

I can honestly say my four years at De La Salle certainly prepared me for the challenges of a tough curriculum and the organization needed to excel in a demanding D-1 top 8 swim program at the level of IU. I certainly miss everyone, and am exceptionally grateful for DLS, and so proud to have my school listed on the roster at IU!!!

Singelyn Named Coach of The Year Congratulations to De La Salle Collegiate Alumnus and Varsity Swim Coach Jim Singelyn, ‘90, who was named “Coach of the Year” in Swimming by the Michigan High School Coaches Association (MHSCA).

DLS finished second at the MHSAA Division 2 State Swimming and Diving Finals in 2016, and had its first state first place winners for individual and relay events. Since taking over the DLS program, DLS has qualified swimmers for the State Finals every year since 2010.

Jim said, “It’s nice to be recognized by your peers. Actually, this symbolizes the hard work of the kids and their parents.”

Presenting Jim with his award was fellow Pilot Dave Zulkiewski, ‘95, who coaches swimming at Bloomfield Hills High School, and is on the Board of the MHSCA.
