From The President Dear De La Salle Family, I recently finished reading Catholic High Schools – Facing New Realities by Father James Heft, a Marianist who is a professor of theology at USC. He paints a very sobering picture of the future of Catholic high schools. Fr. Heft says that American culture, with its emphasis on individualism, consumerism, and materialism, along with the strong impact of the media, influences students and parents who might not see the value of a Catholic high school. I look at De La Salle and our students and am not pessimistic at all. I believe we are teaching values, morals, and skills which you and I want to see in our society. In October, I watched 780 students raise over $3,000 for a seriously injured Catholic Central student. Each day I experience absolute silence as prayer is read over the P.A. And state-of-the art technology being used throughout the school on projects I can’t comprehend. St. John Baptist de La Salle wrote the following: “Christian schools should in no respect be inferior to other; parents should not have occasion to regret that their children do not find therein all other educational advantages, including morality and religion.” This statement resonates today at De La Salle Collegiate. Much of this issue of the Collegiate highlights The Annual Report - the people who are supporting us are saying “YES” to De La Salle. They see De La Salle as important to our community and our society because of the quality of students we graduate. De La Salle stands for excellence in education. We continually strive to improve and be the best. That is why De La Salle will survive as a Catholic/Lasallian high school. Thank you for your support. De La Salle Dads’ Club

We came. We saw. We stayed.

They work the penalty box at hockey games, and the concession stand at school dances and athletic events. They supervise the parking lot at the CBA Craft Show and Open House. They put on the annual Train and Toy Show, sell Entertainment Books and 50-50 tickets, and have built a chapel, a faculty room, showcases, and replaced classroom lighting systems. Ultimately, they make De La Salle a better place for young men. They are the De La Salle Dads’ Club. In continuous existence almost from the day the school opened in 1926, the Dads’ Club has a rich history of commitment to the school - both the students and the Christian Brothers.

Br. Bob Carnaghi, DLS President Emeritus, serves as the Moderator for the Dads’ Club. “Since 1926, DLS students have benefitted from the partnership between the Dads’ Club and the Brothers,” states Brother Bob. “These men are a blessing to our school in countless ways.” Br. Thomas Lackey, DLS President, recalled the importance of the Dads in the school’s move from Detroit in 1982. “We literally would not be in Warren without the Dads. They loaded truckload after truckload of ‘stuff’ from the old school on Conner and Glenfield to be brought to the new Warren campus. Once we moved in, they literally built many things in the school, but most importantly, it’s their spirit that resides here.”

Brother Tom added, “When it came time for the Brothers to make the move from Detroit, and the old Brothers’ House, in 1985, they again loaded and unloaded. Our basement was unfinished for a year until a group of dedicated dads completely finished it, from tile to lights to ceiling to walls. And they continue their dedication to De La Salle today.” “We simply couldn’t do what we do without them,” says Athletic Director Brian Kelly. On the next page, some of the dads shared their thoughts about why they volunteer, and continue to be involved long after their sons have graduated, moved on to college, gotten married, and had children of their own.

Always There For The Pilots

I have a long association with the school, dating back to 1961 when I started high school. In some ways, I am showing my gratitude to the school for the excellent education my sons received at the school as well as myself. I still help the Dads’ Club because I like the camaraderie, and I believe in the need for Catholic education. Dads don’t need to be exceptionally talented to help out at school. show interest in the different areas of their sons’ lives. An involved parent shows they care. I have stayed involved to continue demonstrating that volunteering is a Christian way of life, and hopefully my son will also do this someday with his own children. Conversation with... The “senior” member of the DLS Faculty, Mike Szatkowski, ’73, left his Social Studies classroom two years ago, in the Fall of 2011, to take on a new role: Academic Support Coordinator.

I have been also blessed to work with great coaches, including our present staff - Paul Verska and Mike Lewis. Some great coaches who are really fine men who have in mind the best interests and development of the students. These coaches have had great personal qualities, and are great role models. They are very inspirational to me.

A DLS faculty member since 1977, Mike also continues to coach varsity football. Why did you decide to go into teaching?

The word “men” is a Mike Szatkowski “trademark.” Alumni associate that word with you. Have you consciously used the word in teaching, and with your students?

In high school, I had some really great experiences, and was blessed with some really fine teachers and coaches. Early in my college years, I decided that I wanted to be a teacher. A lot of credit goes to the men who were my teachers and coaches: the late Tony DeSantis, Rich Dobrzynski, Evo Alberti, Al Baumgart who coached football, and Paul Poledink who was one of my English teachers. 6

What were the characteristics of those men that left such an impression? That’s a tough question. They did push us intellectually, and they pushed us physically on the field. Tony, Doby, and Evo were dedicated teachers. It was exciting to be in a class with them. They were fun to be around, and they obviously loved what they were doing. I enjoyed being in their classrooms; I just enjoyed school. Al Baumgart’s first year as head coach of football was my freshman year. There’s no doubt I’ve become a coach because of so many of the experiences I had under Al and his assistants. They made us better than we thought we could be. They brought the best out of an average group of players. Coaching is a rewarding experience. I see kids achieve so much more than they thought they could.

A lot of alumni would describe you the same way – as someone who was very enthusiastic in the classroom. That’s nice to hear. One of the important qualities of a teacher is enthusiasm, and you have to have a certain level of energy to teach. You’ve also coached throughout your career. Has that made a difference in your teaching? My coaching experiences made me a better classroom teacher. As a coach, you’re presenting something on the field. You have to break it down into its parts. Coaching requires a certain kind of patience, and that does help out in the classroom. You see another side to the kids. And I also believe being a teacher also made me a better coach. Do you love coaching football? I do. Coaching has been an important part of my life, and I’ve worked with some great players and teams over the years. What you remember are those guys who were on the team who maybe didn’t play at all or played very little, but made contributions. They were great to be around at practice, and they brought a great attitude.

I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about. Men? I never thought referring to my students as “men” as the least bit unusual. I don’t know if I started a class by saying “men” all through my career, or even if I did it at the end. It’s what we’re all about. “Builders of Boys, Makers of Men.” Students will remember and recount to me or any teacher in the building, the most bizarre stories of things that happened in the room, and these stories have nothing to do with the Greeks or Romans, or the content of your classes. Yet, they are impactful things to students. Is it the same for you, remembering more about the teachers you had in high school than the content? It’s remarkable to me how much of the content that is conveyed in the classroom is lost. You recall the character of the teachers. The energy. The atmosphere. I’ve forgotten a lot from high school. I forgot most of the math that Tony D. and Doby taught me, and most of the French I learned from Evo Alberti. In my present role, however, I am quickly relearning French and Math. It’s still there.

Mike Szatkowski You’ve been here a long time. Were the kids you taught at the beginning of your career dramatically different from the kids you deal with now? Is the school different? It seems as if kids now have more issues to deal with, and have a different world than what I am familiar with. The school has gone through various waves of change. One particular difference that strikes me now – because of my role as Academic Support Coordinator - is how our teaching philosophy has changed. At one time, DLS had a “sink or swim” philosophy toward its students. Teachers were expected to teach excellent lessons, and students were expected to hang in there and keep up. If a student didn’t get something, it was up to the student to seek help. That was our philosophy as recently as ten years ago. That philosophy has undergone a huge change and is now much more in keeping with the mission of the school. Now if we accept students, we have an obligation to see that they achieve at high levels. You’ve changed as well, going from

the classroom into this new role. How do the two compare? I loved teaching, and enjoyed being in the room a lot. There’s no doubt about it. There are classes I would pay money to teach. I enjoy what I’m doing now because I am being fulfilled in a different way. It’s a little harder to see results. When you’re in a classroom, you have immediate feedback. The eyes get big. You can see that something has just dawned on the student sitting there in front of you. Describe your role as Academic Support Coordinator. We have a lot of programs that come under the umbrella of of academic support. The program that is maybe the most important, the one that is the most innovative, the one that brings us the most rewards is the FAST program, which stands for Future Achievement Starts Today. The FAST program has a lot to it. The process of choosing students from next fall’s freshman class for the FAST program starts now. We look at their test scores, their applications and the essays they write, and the evaluations from their teachers, principal, and counselors. We also do some further testing here at DLS, starting in late January. From all that data, we choose a group of students who will benefit from some attention during the school day and after school to achieve high levels at DLS. These students have an identical course load as their classmates, and are held to the same standards, we’re just of-

fering them support to do well in those classes and not become frustrated and drop out. They get attention from various teachers who are part of the Academic Support team - Br. Bob Carnaghi, Mrs. Suzanne Cusmano, Mrs. Stephanie Howay in the Literacy class, the after-school supervisors, National Honor Society tutors, their counselors, and me. In the not too distant past, despite the extra resources, the attrition rate for guys in FAST was about one in four, one in five. In the last two years, we have lost ZERO students. You’ve been associated with the school for nearly 45 years – as a student, teacher, coach. What do you think about the future of DLS? I am excited about what I see happening. We’re more in alignment with the mission of the founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle whose mission was to teach all sorts of young men. He created an Institute of Brothers dedicated to educating young men who would not otherwise be educated. What we’re doing here now is taking in students who might not have been admitted in the past or might not have prospered, and doing everything we can to see that they achieve at a high level, that they get into an excellent college. We’re helping all students - students in FAST, students in College Prep classes, students in Advanced Placement classes. I’m excited about the new IB (International Baccalaureate) program. That’s another way to help kids achieve their very best. We are helping all students. To me, that’s in keeping with the mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle. And I am very proud to be a part of that.

Alumni Spotlight Mark St. Peter, ‘81

CEO and Managing Director, Computing Source, a full service digital evidence solution for law firms and legal professionals A school closure. A dropped pencil. A carjacking. And cancer. For Mark St. Peter, ‘81, his path to CEO of a major company has had some unusual twists and turns. As a high school student, he thought he’d like to be a pediatric surgeon. One of his five younger sisters was born with a life-threatening condition, and a surgeon saved her life. Mark said, “I thought that was pretty cool. You could help someone out at a young age, someone with their whole life ahead of them.

“Br. Carl Malacalza really stood out. Right away he let me work on the school computer. I wrote some of the software DLS used for scheduling and grading. “I learned most of what I know about computers back in high school. How computers work. We had cassette tapes. I remember when we got the floppy drive. That was a big old deal.” Detour to Mack Avenue But a call in 1981 to Br. Carl Malacalza, who was teaching Computer Programming at DLS, from Joseph Versical, DLS ‘38, who owned an insurance agency, led Mark on an unexpected detour.

variables that go into setting a rate, and using what I had learned at DLS, wrote some software. I couldn’t wait for the end of the school day to go to his office and work on programs. When I was done, Mr. Versical offered me $2,500, plus $1,000 a year for rate changes in the program - which was an astounding amount of money. I was 17.” Mark went on that summer of 1981 to write programs for nearly 100 clients. Not bad for the kid from the 8 Mile and Gratiot area who attended Assumption Grotto, and used the profits from his 400-customer paper route to buy comic books. “I can never repay Mr. Versical. He did so much for me and my career.” A School Closure Mark began college at the University of Michigan, and thanks to Advanced Placement credits in Math, Chemistry, Calculus, and French, had sophomore status. But he could have just as easily ended up at Harvard or Stanford, Northwestern or Notre Dame. He had multiple academic scholarship offers from universities all over the country. However, the University of Michigan offered undergraduate and medical school scholarships.

Versical wanted to hire a student to write a software program to help his Grosse Pointe Woods agency figure out the best insurance policy rates for his clients. Br. Carl sent Mark to see Joe in his Mack Ave. office.

The multiple college scholarship offers were a deja vu of what Mark faced in eighth grade: he received scholarship offers from De La Salle, as well as Austin High School and Harper Woods Notre Dame. “Austin offered me a little more, so I took that scholarship,” says Mark.

“I knew zip about insurance, “ says Mark. “Mr. Versical showed me some printouts, and what he needed to have a program do. So I studied the printout, learned the 21

Mark St. Peter a year earlier. “After a lot of pleading, Br. Jerome let me have my scholarship. My dad was a cop, I had five younger sisters, and I needed that scholarship. My years at DLS mean the world to me. I will always be grateful that Br. Jerome saw something in me.”

and went through over a year of extensive chemotherapy and radiation. In 2001, the cancer returned.

At DLS, Mark was an “A” student, and is still proud of the Math Medal he received at graduation from the late Tony DeSantis.

“We saw that there was a void. All these companies were acquiring computers, but needed someone to do the cabling, the networking, to set up their printers, to SELL them the computers.”

At Michigan, Mark set up his schedule with no classes on Wednesdays, so he could meet with clients, deliver software and pick up checks. His customers were all over Michigan, including the Upper Peninsula, as well as in Ohio. He was driving all those miles. Every Wednesday. A Dropped Pencil One day, in an organic chemistry class, still on the pre-med path, Mark was copying a complicated formula from the board, and dropped his pencil. He bent over to pick up the pencil, and looked up to see the professor erasing the board. “I leaned over and asked the student next to me if I could copy her notes. She moved away. That was it. I just snapped. I stood up, walked out of the room, and decided I was done. I was dropping out of college.” At 19, he incorporated and created his first company, Alpha Centauri Development Corporation. Mark’s business continued to grow, as he acquired a working knowledge of banking and payroll, writing software programs that he says are still used by some of his clients today.

Meanwhile, on the business side, Mark had dissolved Alpha Centauri in the late 1980’s, and created Century Computer in 1988 in downtown Detroit with a friend from Windsor.

But when Mark had his 2001 surgery, his partner insisted they dissolve the company. “I felt awful. People lost their jobs. But I had Stage 3 cancer. I had to recover and get better.” Century Computer split into Computing Source and Computing Express; Computing Source became the professional services side, and Computing Express became the retail - computer maintenance piece of the business. Specializing in Litigation Support In 2004, Mark recovered data from a computer disk that proved crucial to a corporate lawsuit. He recognized that there was a definite need for specialty work in computer “spoiliation” - simply knowing how to go into a computer’s hard drive and recover data. Mark is one of only 600 Certified Computer Examiners in the country, and is also a Certified Fraud Examiner. “I never had accounting training, but I learned. A CPA

I would just study printouts, ask a lot of questions, and then write the software.” A Carjacking, and Cancer In 1985, Mark’s life took another turn. He was shot during an attempted carjacking, and “a skilled surgeon had to put me back together.” The same surgeon treated Mark in May 2001, in a surgery that had a 30% survival rate. He had been diagnosed with lymphatic cancer in 1996,

Giving Back Mark and his company have committed to donate 1% of their revenue each month to a different charity, and have plans to split profits in February 2014 to De La Salle, Regina High School (which his sisters attended), and the University of Michigan. “I’ve always meant to go back to college,” says Mark.

His clients range from law firms to corporations to the U.S. District Court in Flint where he was an expert witness in a case involving FBI investigations. Mark also has an extensive collection of articles in legal publications, and has presented at the State Bar of Michigan’s “Day of Education.”

He has been a supporter of De La Salle for many years. “I’ve missed very few of the Christian Brothers’ Dinners. I look forward to them every year. You look around, and it’s WOW! A thousand guys there supporting De La Salle.”

Mark’s resumé notes his mastery of a variety of computer languages, and over 80 computer forensic and e-discovery projects.

Company Growth Computing Source has grown exponentially in the last year, from 20 employees to 133. In addition to its Southfield main office, Computing Source has offices in Detroit, Birmingham, Ann Arbor, and Grand Rapids. The Chicago office opened in August 2013, and Mark is looking to add offices in Milwaukee, Indianapolis, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. He intends to remain a “Midwestern” company, but also has a “sprinkling” of international clients. “I’ve studied the market, and my company is the ONLY one in the country providing full-service litigation support.” Experts predict that E-discovery will be a $9 billion a year industry by 2015. “There’s so much data out there now - not just in the computer, but emails, texts, stuff in the cloud. All kinds of information is flying everywhere. Attorneys need a strong ally to help manage all this information and help them in litigation. My firm assembles all this information for our legal clients, and we also have a full graphics department preparing trial boards, and other graphic displays. Most firms don’t have the people in house to do this. We provide that full support.” He’s added high tech court reporting, and will soon add document storage.

Mark has also set up a charitable foundation, “Kiddie Computers,” to help educate children in the use of computers. Mark envisions computer coaching sessions, and spoken with parents who love the possibility of Saturday computer camps at his offices. He is also hoping to fund a high school scholarship within the year. His Southfield office is an eclectic hodgepodge of action figures, superheroes posters, and a lego people courtroom in a display case near the front door. “I’m just a big kid. Really. This is an office, but it’s not a morgue. We try to have fun.” Although he has spent over 30 years with computers, Mark says he had never played any kind of computer game until he visited his sister and her family in Germany. “My nephew said, hey Uncle Mark, you gotta play this game. I just faked it. I did well enough that he was happy.” A big kid. Whose path twisted and turned along the way. And whose Lasallian education has made all the difference. After nearly 20 years at DLS over two lengthy assignments, Br. Joe enjoyed his first sabbatical during 2002 - 2003 Born and raised in Detroit, Br. Joe atin Rome, Italy. Joe earned degrees from Catholic University, California Lutheran College (Special Education), Camarillo State Hospital (Certification in Child Mental Health), and the University of San Francisco (Educational Administration).His teaching assignments were at La Salle School in Albany, NY, and in California in the Orange Diocese.

That year was followed by five years at Christian Brothers’ “HQ” in Lincroft, NJ, where he spent five years as the Associate Provincial for Formation. In 2009, he “returned to the field,” with an assignment to CBA Syracuse, a co-ed school with nearly 800 students

in grades 7 - 12. Br. Joe is head of the school, which encompasses both principal and president duties. He is finishing his second three-year term in 2015, and hopes to have another term as the school goes through an administrative re-organization. Br. Joe is in Michigan around the holidays, spending time with his sister and brother-in-law and extended family. He is in the Detroit area for long weekends during the summer, but is compelled to not spend too much time away. “There’s always something going on when you’re a principal.” Alumni may contact Br. With his assignment to DLS in 1983, Br. Joe was able to spend extended time with his family here in Detroit for the first time since entering the Christian Brothers’ Novitiate in 1965. Br. Joe says, “One of my fondest memories at De La Salle was the awesome pleasure of playing Jake to Br. Richard Galvin’s Elwood in our Blues Brothers skit for a raffle assembly. The corresponding tax advantages of charitable giving finish far down the list of motivating factors for donors to give. However, it is valuable to be aware of these topical opportunities that can help you achieve both goals.

Make a direct gift from your IRA If you are 70 1/2 or older, during 2013 you may be able to make a gift directly from your IRA to De La Salle and have it count as part of your minimum withdawal reqirement. Generally, when you take a distribution from your IRA, it is treated as taxable income. Under this temporary provision, however, it can be excluded if the gift is made directly from the IRA to a qualifying charity. This can be a very effective way to satisfy your desire to support De La Salle.

Donate Appreciated Stock Rather than writing a check to DLS as a donation, consider donating appreciated stock. Instead of selling the security, donate the shares directly to DLS. You will potentially avoid paying any capital-gains taxes associated with an appreciated stock while benefitting from a charitable deduction based on the full market value at the time of donation. The process is usually very straight forward. Brother George Synan Society Annual Dinner Feb. 6, 2014 For those members of the Brother George Synan Planned Giving Recognition Society that have already designated De La Salle as a beneficiary of their estate, please note that our annual dinner will be held on February 6, 2014, at Lochmoor Country Club. Our speaker will be Br. Dennis Malloy, Brother Visitor of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, District of Eastern North America.

Planned Giving Impacts De La Salle Bequests make up almost 90% of the Planned Gifts made annually in the United States. The Brothers ask our Alumni and Friends to consider including the school in their estate plan through a bequest. Often, people fear that they can't make a big enough designation to make it worthwhile, but that is not the case. Every planned gift, regardless of the size, makes a difference for a student at De La Salle. This year, we have awarded more than $1 million in tuition assistance, continuing a DLS tradition of helping families in need that desire a quality Catholic education for their sons. Establishing a bequest in a trust or will is very straightforward. Here is an example of the simple language to include in your will or trust: â€œI give ($ or %) of my estate to De La Salle Collegiate, 14600 Common Road, Warren, MI 48088 to provide funding for the ongoing activities of the school as determined by the President and Board of Trustees (or for the purpose of ________).â€?

The Fox Gift at Work De La Salle continues to benefit from Bill Fox's $5 million gift made in 2011. In addition to other facility improvements and scholarship support, the gift enabled the school to completely renovate its parking lot in the summer of 2013. With nearly 500 parking spots and a 50% increase in lot capacity, students no longer need to utilize on-street parking, addressing a significant student safety issue from the past.

Mark cites two of his DLS English teachers as memorable. “Mr. (David) Kirck showed me you could be male, and be into literature, and not be ‘hokey,’ and still be a family man. “I was very competitive and when I didn’t know something, I wanted to learn it. In freshman year, I had Mrs. (Vicki) Granger for English. My knowledge of grammar wasn’t very good. She joked with me that I was a ‘grammar moron,’ and she spent time

helping me learn my grammar after school, free time, whenever. A lot of teachers at La Salle go the extra mile, and help students when they need help.” Mark was also influenced by the late Tony De Santis and by Mike Szatkowski. “I didn’t have either as a teacher. They were my football coaches. I saw that they were teachers first, and that they considered teaching their first priority. They showed you that you could be outstanding in both and compromised in neither.” Mark began his teaching career at DLS in 2002, and taught English for two years. He coached JV baseball for two years, and was head coach for JV, and then Freshmen Football. He was offensive coordinator of the varsity football team from 2006 – 2009. He joined the Utica Community Schools in 2004, as a teacher at Ford II. He has taught Advanced Placement English, Literature and Composition, for the last four years at the school, along with a variety of other English classes. He coached JV baseball for four years, and is now a varsity assistant. Mark and his wife Julie live in Grosse Pointe Woods, and intend to put some of the $25,000 into a college fund for their three daughters – Annabelle, a third-grader, Charlotte, a first-grader, and Phoebe, a two-year old. “Maybe we’ll take a vacation, too,” said Mark.

And on November 6, Doug was one of “40 Under 40” honored by Crain’s Business Detroit in a ceremony gathering Southeast Michigan’s brightest achievers. Doug began his foray into politics as a high-schooler, successfully lobbying the New Baltimore City Council to ban leaf burning. “I had really bad asthma and almost died from a respiratory arrest brought on by thick smoke from leaf burning. I went door to door in my spare time asking for signatures to encourage the city council to ban leaf burning,” said Doug. “That experience taught me the importance of local government and how one person can make a difference.” As a DLS junior, Doug lived in Washington DC, working as a Congressional page. “For six months, I would start classes at 7 a.m. in the Library of Congress, and then be on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives by 10 a.m. as a Democratic Cloakroom Page. My job was to help Members of Congress during floor votes and retrieve them from the floor for important phone calls, including a few calls from the

senior director of their $155 million capital campaign. He quickly saw the need to create an office of government affairs for the school. He says the medical school didn’t have any real political connections, so he created the office of government affairs. In his role as Associate Vice President of Government Affairs, Doug works

to keep the state and federal contracts coming to WSU. He also makes every effort to make sure that lawmakers in Lansing and Washington DC know the good work that comes from those contracts.

"There is a shrinking amount of dollars, and if you don't make your case as to why you're a value-added entity, you're not going to get support," he told Crain’s.

Doug and his wife Joan, an estate planning attorney at Dickinson Wright, have two sons and live in Sterling Heights.

Career Day is Coming! The De La Salle Alumni Association will once again sponsor a Career Day on Tuesday, January 28, 2014. We are looking for alumni who can share their knowledge and experiences in their chosen professions. The day begins at 8 a.m. with a “Meet and Greet” with the other participating alumni in the DLS Library. The balance of the morning, beginning at 9 a.m., graduates will speak in three sessions to interested students. Lunch is provided following the sessions, and the day concludes at approximately noon. Some other alumni are also distinguishing themselves in the world of professional sports. Nick Buss, ‘04, got the call up to the Los Angeles Dodgers for the month of September. Although not on the playoff roster, Nick traveled with the Dodgers as they competed in the MLB playoffs. Nick graduated from the University of Southern California, and was a 2008 8th round draft pick of the Dodgers. He is playing winter ball in Venezuela. Danny DeKeyser, ‘08, joined the Detroit Red Wings late last spring as a free agent, and is already making a mark as an outstanding defenseman in his rookie season. Danny played junior hockey in British Columbia and in Iowa before going to Western Michigan University. Alex Marcotullio, ‘09, who had an outstanding college career at Northwestern, recently joined the Glasgow Rocks, a basketball team in the United Kingdom. Alex spent two summers playing for Great Britain’s U20 team at the 2010 and 2011 U20 European Championships. He withdrew in 2012 due to an injury. Alex was inducted into the CHSL Hall of Fame in June 2013; he played professional basketball in Italy this past summer.

Admissions News A Note from the Admissions Director This fall has been an exciting time in Admissions. We have seen a tremendous interest in De La Salle from prospective Pilots of all ages. We just wrapped up our most successful Fall Activities Night ever! We had over 170 students between grades 5 - 8 in attendance to go through a series of fun events and obstacles, followed by National Coney Islands for everyone. We also were privileged to meet so many great families at our Open House on November 3, 2013. Many alumni brought their sons to visit “The Collegiate.” Here is what one particularly proud alumnus had to say, “I am a proud 1977 graduate. Listening to the students who participated in the Open House brought back wonderful memories. My children realized after our visit why the De La Salle Family is special. Once a Pilot, always a Pilot. I would like to thank the administration and students for continuing the tradition.” – Ralph Lobaito, DLS ’77. On May 16, 2014 we will have the annual Spring Activities Night for prospective students in grades 4 - 7. Additionally, we have a variety of academic and athletic summer camps designed for families to meet our staff, allow students to learn about the programs, and meet other prospective students while learning about De La Salle. Information about the 2014 De La Salle Summer Camps should be available by late February. In families where both parents work during the summer, the camps may be used as child-care tax write-offs. School News Making a Difference - Pilots in the Community

During Senior Service Day in mid-October, seniors provided service at their home Catholic grade schools, at a farm gathering tomatoes for Forgotten Harvest, or at the Forgotten Harvest warehouse in Oak Park. School News Mr. Brian Barker Named 2013 Lasallian Educator of the Year Mr. Barker, Campus Minister at De La Salle Collegiate, received the Lasallian Educator of the Year award following the November 1, 2013 All-School Liturgy. Br. Thomas Lackey, DLS President said, “Brian is able to positively affect students because he treats them with respect and understanding. He goes out of his way to pull them aside to find out who they are, what they are involved in, and what their families are like.” Br. Tom added, “He loves to see the excitement in the faces of our young men, and particularly enjoys working to help build up their faith.” A 1992 graduate of Harper Woods Notre Dame High School, Mr. Barker began his college career on a full hockey scholarship to Northern Michigan University. He finished his undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin (Superior), where he was a twotime All-American hockey player. Mr. Barker earned his Master’s degree in Theology from Sacred Heart Major Seminary (Detroit).

Mr. Barker is a graduate of the Buttimer Institute, a threeyear program of summer studies on St. John Baptist de la Salle and Lasallian studies, and has attended the Huether conference, a Lasallian conference held each year with a focus on innovative education issues. He has also attended four Br. Luke Salm Workshops, an annual workshop to enhance and support the Christian education and evangelization of the young by providing professional development for and accompaniment to the District’s Religious Studies instructors, Campus Ministers, and other Lasallian educators. In addition to his extensive Campus Ministry responsibilities, which includes planning retreats for students and faculty, liturgies, prayer services, and service projects, Mr. Barker is also teaching a section of Religion this year. He says, “St. John Baptist De la Salle says (Meditation 139.3), ‘You know, touching hearts is the greatest miracle you could perform and that God asks of you.’

Evening Of Delights The Evening of Delights is a tastefest held every October at De La Salle, to raise funds for the cultural and athletic programs. The theme this year was “Be Collegiate at the Collegiate” with College and DLS decor and clothing visible throughout the school. We had a selection of tasty vendors, and a fantastic silent auction. A wonderful time was had by all.

Ed attended the U.S. Naval Academy, and a 1952 Gold Medalist as part of the USA Rowing Team, “The Great Eight.” Following the Helsinki Olympics, the team toured Russia on a four week goodwill tour. The Great Eight never

lost a race over their four years at the Naval Academy. Ed was a Hall of Fame member of the International Rowing Association and was inducted into the DLS Hall of Fame in October 2004. Trained as a nuclear engineer, he worked with Admiral Rickover in developing the nuclear submarine fleet. Following his naval career, Ed worked for Westinghouse, in Richland, WA. He passed away in Phoenix, AZ.
