From The President

Dear De La Salle Family, In the Brothers’ geographical world, De La Salle Collegiate belongs to the District of Eastern North America (DENA). Our Lasallian ministries and schools extend from Providence RI down to Washington DC and everywhere on the East Coast in between. The western edge of DENA includes Toronto, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Warren.

Why I am writing about geography? One word: Sandy. As reports filtered in, we learned of the devastation to Lasallians and to our ministries. At St. Peter’s on Staten Island, twelve families lost everything and one alumnus drowned. At Bishop Loughlin in Brooklyn, twelve families lost everything. Classes were cancelled for two weeks at Christian Brothers Academy on the Jersey Shore. The Brothers at La Salle Academy in lower Manhattan moved to the Bronx because they were in the no power zone. I think you understand the enormity of Sandy’s impact on Lasallians and their families.

To bring it closer to home, De La Salle has hundreds of alumni out East, many of whom I met at a September reception in NYC. I remember the new retiree who lives on Long Island and hope he and his wife weathered the storm. I think of the young alumnus in Hoboken NJ, the city underwater and without power. And I think of a man I taught who lives in the no power zone. I can’t imagine what these men and thousands of Lasallians, teachers, parents, students and Brothers, endured.

I don’t want to end on this note and would like to mention an experience I had with a senior a few weeks ago. He is a Kairos Retreat leader and asked me to read the speech he would give to the forty students on the retreat. I was overwhelmed by what he wrote about the ups and downs of his life and some of the anguish he has experienced.

But it was his conclusion which was so profound. God has a plan for all of us. We might not understand the plan and there may be pain along the way, but God is always with us and we can always rely on God. At De La Salle, we teach our students faith in God. This is just one example of how that faith manifests itself.

Please remember and pray for the members of our Lasallian family who were impacted by Sandy, and for our De La Salle students who experience their own challenges.

The Christian Brothers' Auxiliary Generations of Support for the Lasallian Mission of DLS The Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary, the CBA, is built on traditions that date back to 1926 when De La Salle Collegiate opened its doors at Conner and Glenfield. Mothers of those first students met to meet the needs of the Christian Brothers who were sent to educate the young men in the Detroit area.

Over the past nine decades, the CBA has expanded its mission to include fundraising events to support the needs of the school and its students.

To honor the CBA’s commitment to the “Preserving the Legacy” campaign, a plaque was placed outside the Library in 1994, dedicating the Library to the “members of the Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary in recognition of their commitment and support.” The CBA was a key component to the success of the “Preserving the Legacy” campaign.

CBA Members Reflect Service and Friendship Alyce Hallman began her association with the Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary in 1979, when her older son, Larry, ‘83, was a freshman. Later, her son Joe, ‘88, was a student, and now Joe’s son, Joey, is a freshman. During her 33 years of membership with the CBA, Alyce has served as CBA President, has chaired various events, and has been one of the most active volunteers for the CBA year in and year out.

Alyce said, “I have stayed involved in the Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary for the past 33 years because of its name. Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary. It is not just a mothers’ club. It is a group of women who believe in the school, the Lasallian Mission, and Catholic education. Unlike other PTA’s or mothers’ clubs, the CBA provides support to the Brothers for more than just the four years our sons are in school. All of our projects and fundraising are to help keep the costs down. And, just as importantly, show support for the Brothers, the Administrators, Faculty, Coaches, and Students.”

Alyce also cites the friendships she has made over the years, both spiritually and socially. “I can’t imagine not seeing the great friends I have made over the years. How many of us have friends from school, or parishes, or

neighbors that we think about getting together with some day, but that day never comes? Once a month, by coming to the CBA meetings, I get to renew these friendships.”

One of the newer members of the CBA is Shannon Haag, whose DLS alumnus husband Steve graduated in 1988. Their two sons, Christopher, a junior, and Adam, a freshman, participate in the DLS Music Programs, and Shannon herself is the current President of the Music Boosters, and the past Music Boosters Communications Secretary. That Communications Secretary role is one she’ll take on for the CBA in January 2013, as she finishes her second year as the CBA sophomore rep. She is co-chairing the CBA Tea in the Fall of 2013.

Shannon says how impressed she was with not just the number of parents who are active with the CBA, Dads’ Club, and other activities, but also the Alumni. “Their commitment energized me, and encouraged me to get involved and stay involved. I am so grateful to have the DLS Family. With each experience, I have grown as a mother, wife, leader, and friend because of my experiences and friendships through De La Salle. “

A Conversation with...

Technology upgrades include increased broadband capacity and 90 tablet computers When you came to De La Salle in 2005, where was the school in terms of technology?

When I first got here, the first thing I noticed was Chris Dean (Assistant Principal) walking around picking up attendance slips from classroom doors.

We administrators joke about it now, but I couldn’t believe we were still doing that.

Since then, we’ve moved forward in technology by leaps and bounds.

Initially, what did you do with technology?

We started to make a plan. We had to have enough infrastructure for all of the teachers and administrative staff to make use of technology.

In my first five years, we instituted wireless in the building. We put Smart Boards in every classroom. We issued every teacher a laptop. We developed an online system for grades, attendance, and communicating with parents. Eventually, we evolved to teacher web pages.

And slowly but surely we have looked at student use, primarily in the library/ media center, which we now call the Digital Resource Center (DRC).

Besides the name change to DRC, how has the library changed over the past seven years?

When I came here, there were six computers in the corner, in study carrels for student use. Now we have 42 computers in there, along with 30 Google Chromebooks (tablet computers).

We took the two rooms adjacent to the librarian’s office, cleaned them out, knocked out one of the walls, and made one room a computer area The other room is now where our Information Technology (IT) people are. It’s much better for our IT Director Dennis Parks to be right there, along with his assistant Mrs. Sheryl Anderson, to assist with any computer issues that may arise in the DRC. You’ve established a Technology Leadership Team. What do they do?

We’re not fundamentally different from any other school or business in that the rate of change in technology is so rapid that any big institution is always going to be behind the curve.

How you deal with that is really the mark of how successful you’ll be as an institution.

What our tech team does is look at issues and figure out how we’re going to acclimate. One of the things we’ve done is to say that as a teaching staff, we’re going to allow interpersonal devices laptops, tablets, smart phones. A lot of our teachers have been using computers nearly their entire lives, and certainly throughout their college careers.

We also allocated funds in the budget to increase the wireless capacity in the library to accommodate all those computers and tablets, as well as in one wing where we have two teachers teaching the freshman seminar using Google Chromebooks.

What’s the tech team looking at for the 2013 - 2014 school year?

We meet every other week, a standing meeting, to talk about future issues and budget. Our conversation has centered on where to increase the wireless capacity, and we’re looking at the Commons and the Cafeteria. It makes sense that there should be more wireless availability in those areas where students congregate.

We’re also looking at a third set of Google Chromebooks for the freshmen. Right now we have two teachers, The team has also looked at increasing each with 30 Chromebooks. How are teachers using technology?

And how do you train them?

Besides the posting of attendance and grades and emailing with parents, teachers have developed web pages and prepare lessons integrating the Smart Board. They are collaborating as departments using Google Docs. And they’re using Google Docs with their students in class so they are seeing work in real time.

Teacher training has been a longstanding issue. The tech leadership team needs to develop a professional development plan that is systemic for novices, intermediates, and experts.

We systematically train teachers to keep up with the kids. How to use Google Docs in class. How to use Smart Boards. And we look at how best to use our experts. Do we have them double back and make them trainers or is that too much work for them? Do we send them off on extensive research? Some of our teachers are really good at using technology and integrating it into their teaching.

All the technology costs money.

How are you addressing the budgetary issues?

The third thing the tech team has been working on, besides the wireless issue and the teacher training plan, is on our tech plan for accreditation from the North Central Association. We’re also doing the tech plan for the State of Michigan so we can make some grant

applications. Without a plan, you can’t get a grant.

The kids are pretty comfortable with technology. The teachers are using Smart Boards and Google Docs. How about the administration?

We use the PD360 app on the Ipad.

PD360 is a professional development program. We have an agreed upon template or rubric, so that when each of the four administrators - myself, Steve Stewart, Chris Dean, Brian Kelly - go into a classroom, and observe, we make notes and send it to the teacher right then.

At first, teachers found it a little intimidating. Any change is difficult.

Someone is in their classroom and taking notes and sending them immediate feedback. In the end, it makes profes-

sionals better so that they can serve kids better. The most important thing is to follow up any online communication with a face to face conversation.

That is the means to facilitate real learning and growth.

How about Ebooks? Is the day coming when every student will carry around his own laptop or tablet?

I think that depends on what publishers are going to do. They have not opened the floodgates, and are trying to address their own revenue stream.

There are very few textbooks available as Ebooks right now. Once you can have all your books downloaded, there’s a much greater chance of everyone having to have a laptop or tablet.

Without those Ebooks though, the backpack still lives.

Thanks to the donation of a server from RAVE Computers, students in the Advanced Engineering classes are now able to use the latest version of Dassault Systems’ CATIA software, V6, used in industry for Computer Aided Design (CAD). With the 25 comptuers purchased from RAVE, students work on CATIA projects in “the Cloud.”

Around The Collegiate fall sports highlights Cross-Country

The cross-country team had a competitive season, with nearly every runner dropping time as the weeks went on.

Sophomore Mickey Davey earned All-State Honors, finishing 20th in the Division 1 MHSAA Finals.

Mickey had an outstanding season, with wins in several races.

His state qualifying time at the regionals, 15:33, was a minute faster than his 2011 time on the same course at Metro Beach.

Mickey Davey He took first in the Macomb County Championships, the CHSL Championships, the Hanson Invitational, and the DLS Invitational.

Football

The varsity football team overcame illnesses and injuries and an extremely difficult schedule to finish 5 - 4. Seven of their nine opponents made the MHSAA playoffs, including their Central Division rivals Brother Rice, Catholic Central, and Orchard Lake who were in the State Finals of the Division 1, 2, and 3 playoffs respectively.

The Freshman Football team (pictured below) won the CHSL Central Division with a 7 - 1 record.

Soccer

The varsity team finished the regular season at 12 - 3 - 10.

The team won the first two games in the MHSAA District Competition before losing to Utica Ford 1-0 in the District Championship.

The Pilots were led by new head coach Reid Friedrichs, who previously coached at Livonia Churchill, and had a successful collegiate career at Michigan State University.

De La Salle Athletic Director Brian Kelly said, “Reid brings tremendous high school coaching experience to the program. He also possesses a wealth of playing experience and has outstanding relationships with all of the college coaches in the Midwest. I am thrilled that Reid has joined the De La Salle coaching ranks as he has proved to be a great asset to our school.�

The team had a successful season despite not having one returning starter, nor did the team have several top players who chose to play in the academy soccer system.

Tennis

Congratulations to the DLS Tennis Team, recognized by the Michigan High School Tennis Coaches Association as All-State, Academic Achievement.

Varsity Coach Mr. Jay Ritchie says the award is based on the combined GPA of 4.05 of the 12 DLS players who participated in the state tournament.

The 2012 Freshman Football Team

Around The Collegiate Coach Greg Esler Recognized for “Hall of Fame” Career DLS Varsity Basketball Coach Greg Esler was recently inducted into the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) Hall of Fame.

The Pilots are perennial winners of the District Championship (only missing the title once, in 1998), during Esler’s tenure, and won Regional Championships in 2005, 2007, 2008, and 2010. The Pilots made the MHSAA Class A Final Four in 2007.

DLS Athletic Director Brian Kelly said, “De La Salle is very fortunate to have a person and coach of the caliber of Coach Esler. Not only is he an outstanding, successful coach, he cares about his athletes on and off the court.”

Since Esler took over the basketball program in 1994, the Pilots have compiled an outstanding record in the competitive Catholic High School League (CHSL), and in the MHSAA Playoffs.

De La Salle beat Detroit Pershing in 2011 in the CHSL - PSL Operation Friendship game, the first time the Pilots have ever won that “City Championship” honor.

The Pilots have consistently won the CHSL’s Central Division Championship, with a five-year string of wins from 2008 2012, and the League Championship game from 2009 - 2011.

Once Again... Top Ratings for the De La Salle Marching Band

The DLS Marching Band earned a Division 1 rating at the Fall Marching Band Festival in October 2012 at Troy High School. This is the third consecutive year that Music Director Mr. Michael Szczegielniak and the Marching Band have earned this top rating.

Around The Collegiate De La Salle Honors Veterans and Servicemen De La Salle Collegiate High School is proud to recognize and commemorate those students and staff who have honorably served our nation in the United States Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Air Force.

A memorial wall display is prominently located in the school’s main hallway, next to the main office, honoring qualified individuals. The memorial wall was established by Mr. Steve Stewart, Assistant Principal, himself a U.S. Army veteran.

There are two eligibility categories: • Honorably Discharged Veterans will have their names permanently added to the wall.

• Currently serving service members, 10

both active and reserve components, will have their names added to the wall for one year, renewable upon annual notification.

2011-2012 De La Salle Annual Report Planned Giving

Planned Giving is Central to De La Salle’s Future Planned Giving donors often acknowledge that they personally believe in the Mission of the Christian Brothers because it has positively affected their lives (see story on page 26).

For Br. George Synan Society Members, preserving this mission for others is their profound way of giving back to our community and establishing an enduring legacy.

There are many ways to satisfy your desire to “give back” to De La Salle’s mission through a Planned Gift. From a simple bequest to life insurance policies or charitable annuities, there are options available for those of all income levels.

2011-2012 Annual Report Capital Campaign "Preserving The Legacy"

Preserving The Legacy In 2004, De La Salle dedicated a renovation of its facilities made possible by the Preserving the Legacy Capital Campaign. The improvements include a new academic wing with classrooms and laboratories featuring the best possible educational technology; a new East Entrance; a new Music Room; a renovated Library; and the centerpiece, a new school Chapel.

In July 2011, Bill Fox, DLS Class of 1950, made a transformative gift of $5 million to De La Salle. It is the largest single gift ever made to the school. The gift completed active solicitations for the Preserving the Legacy Campaign.

De La Salle is deeply grateful to all those who, through their generous partnership, have acknowledged the importance of the initiative to the school’s future.

Advancement News Wife of Alumnus Honors Late Husband’s Legacy The late Robert “Bob” Nugent, Class of 1942, a Charter Member of the Brother George Synan Society, often spoke with his wife, Jane Kay Nugent, about how much he owed to his De La Salle Collegiate education.

Jane believes that Bob became so committed to DLS because he came Mrs. Jane Kay Nugent “out of his shell” in high school. He and his fellow Pilots remained in touch over the years, often meeting for lunches, dinners, and reunions.

Jane understood Bob’s passion for De La Salle, and his desire to make a substantial gift to the school. She said, “Bob set up a planned gift because he saw it as giving back to future generations of young men because De La Salle affected his life in so many positive ways.”

The planned gift ensures that Bob, who died in 2008, will be remembered long after he is gone. Jane says she knows that Bob, if he had outlived her, would honor her wishes to support her alma mater, the University of Detroit.

After service in the U.S. Navy, Bob began his career at

Detroit Edison. He was a mechanical engineer, and over the years, built and managed various power plants. Jane began working at Detroit Edison after high school, while attending college, and rose through the company ranks, retiring as a Vice President of Administration.

Bob and Jane married in 1991. Throughout their marriage, they were involved in various community organizations, and together chaired the Community Campaign for St. John Hospital’s Van Elslander Cancer Center.

Currently, Jane, who earned her undergraduate degree in Industrial Management at the University of Detroit (now University of Detroit-Mercy, UDM), is on the UDM School of Business Administration Board of Advisors, as well as the Board of the St. John Health Foundation. While working at Edison’s, Jane earned an M.A. from Wayne State University and then an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan. She has served on numerous other boards, and is also in the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame.

Jane was instrumental in bringing Dr. Antonio Garibaldi, President of UDM, to the 2012 Br. George Synan Society Dinner as the keynote speaker.

Memory of Richard Balgenorth Alive at DLS Kim Balgenorth has honored her late husband Richard, ‘75, with a two-part Memorial.

After Rich’s sudden passing in 2007, Kim left her corporate job as their son Paul, ‘10, was still in high school. She joined the DLS Staff as the Administrative Assistant in Counseling in 2008, and at that time established the Balgenorth Scholarship Fund.

Kim says Richard felt strongly about his educational experience at De La Salle and believed DLS plays a crucial role as a foundation for lifelong learning. The endowment generates funds for both the DLS Tuition Assistance Program and

for the annual Richard A. Balgenorth Award for Higher Education, a $1,000 scholarship annually awarded to a senior. Applicants write an essay about the impact on their own lives of their Lasallian education, and Kim, along with other family members, selects the recipient.

Because Richard felt so strongly that the atmosphere and school spirit of De La Salle impacted his life, Kim also underwrites the annual “BroZone” T-shirts, distributed to every student and staff member each fall. Throughout the year, and particularly at each athletic contest, students are encouraged to wear their BroZone shirts.

In November, National Coney Island partnered with De La Salle to donate half their sales in school that day to the Balgenorth Scholarship Fund. Kim Balgenorth and John Monigold wear their BroZone T-shirts proudly as they buy their hot dogs from the National Coney Island coney cart.

Eighthgraders “shadow” a student, joining his classes, meeting teachers and counselors, enjoying lunch in the cafeteria, and seeing all DLS has to offer. Alumni Spotlight Paul, Peter, and Frank Viviano Owners of Viviano Flower Shop

Growing up, Paul, Peter, and Frank Viviano all worked in the family business, Viviano Flower Shop, founded in 1937 by their grandfather, Frank P. Viviano, Sr. And today, in the company’s 75th anniversary year, the three brothers have led the company’s expansion to four locations and employ over 130 people.

Paul serves as the CEO of the business. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at Hillsdale and later an MA in Finance at Walsh. Although he began working in a lab, his father, Frank Jr., asked him to join the business not long after college. Paul hasn’t looked back. As CEO, he oversees all departments, and directly manages the design and delivery departments, as well as handling the finances.

Peter is the President of Viviano’s. He earned a Bachelor’s in Horticulture from Michigan State University, and always knew he would be in the “flower business.” Peter handles product development and merchandising.

Frank is Vice-President of the company. He earned an Accounting degree at Hillsdale, and later earned his J.D. at the University of Detroit. Frank said, “I had Mr. (John) Schmid for Accounting, and he said to us that one path to success was earning our CPA degree, and then a law degree.” Frank initially worked for a CPA firm for two years. When his brothers asked him to join them, “I realized I missed the family business.”

Frank also works with Finance, but primarily handles wedding sales, and meeting with brides-to-be.

Despite their varying corporate responsibilities, all three can and do step to the “design table,” a workbench 5 feet by 2.5 feet, and design a flower arrangement. They fondly remember their father standing at the design table, doing arrangements, placing orders, and meeting with vendors.

Peter said, “We had to stand next to him. Our dad was the first one here and the last one to leave. He taught us all how to design.”

Frank is often at the table, doing the first arrangement in an order, for the employees to then “follow along.”

Peter says their father never strong-armed them to follow in his footsteps, and at a young age gave them each responsibilities. ”Our dad didn’t let age be a limitation. He gave us the confidence to do anything”.

Frank Viviano, ’89 Each brother was running the greenhouse at age 13 or 14, and ordering plants.

The brothers note they have over 30 first cousins, and at one point, nearly every single one has worked at Viviano Flower Shop. Frank said, “We worked here at Christmas.

We were all together, and we enjoyed it. It was our big family Christmas party.”

Although there are now far more employees than family members at Viviano’s, Peter cites the family atmosphere for their low turnover. “This is one big extended family.”

The Viviano Family also has had an extended history with the Christian Brothers. Their grandfather, Frank Sr., was a high-school student at St. Joe’s, who left school at 16 to help the family when his father suddenly died of a heart attack.

Later their father, Frank Jr., planned to attend De La Salle, but ended up attending U. of D. High. His namesake, Frank, ’89, says his father “messed up on one of the answer sheet lines, and then had all wrong answers.

He realized his error, but it was too late.” Their father’s brothers are graduates, however. Antonio “Tony” Viviano, ‘53, is the retired Chief Judge of the Macomb

La Salle, of various faculty members such as Br. Tom Lackey, Mr. Mike Szatkowski, and Mr. Tony DeSantis, and the camaraderie of their high school years. All three keep in contact with lots of their fellow alumni, and Frank says some of his best friends were his De La Salle classmates.

Viviano Flower Shop, with locations in St. Clair Shores, Chesterfield Township, Shelby Township, and Grosse Pointe Woods was voted Detroit’s Best Flowers every year since 2007 in the “WDIV Vote 4 The Best” Contest.

County Circuit Court. Frank Jr.’s other brother was Sam Viviano, ‘51. Tony’s sons are also graduates. David ‘90, is a Macomb County Judge, and his brother Joe, ‘92, is an attorney.

When it came time for Paul to attend high school, he said he and his parents visited various high schools, including his father’s alma mater.

Paul finished at the “old school,” while Peter had two years at the Detroit campus and two years in the current facility. Frank spent all four years at the current De La Salle location.

Their father, who passed away a few years ago, was a huge supporter of the school, encouraging other family members and friends to attend, and even writing letters of recommendation for any young men he felt would benefit from a Lasallian Education.

Paul, Peter, and Frank have been involved with the school in various ways, and marvel at the school’s expansion, academic offerings, and range of activities.

Paul’s son, Joseph, ‘08, recently graduated from Hillsdale in four years rather than the usual five for Accounting majors. Paul notes his son’s six AP classes enabled him to start Hillsdale as a sophomore. “As a parent, it’s a great thing not to have to pay for an additional year of college.”

Peter’s three sons, currently in grade school at St. Thecla, are eagerly looking to becoming Pilots over the next few years.

But they also cite their high school academic preparation as making their college years easier. Frank began Hillsdale with 14 credits from his 3 Advanced Placement classes, and said that his first two semester in accounting were a review of what he had already learned in high school. He says, “DLS prepares you for the next level better than any other place. You are getting ready for the next level, not just getting a high school degree. It really is college prep.”

Peter says he’s done some checking on how top universities rank De La Salle. “DLS is in the top five. Every time.”

Paul particularly praises De La Salle. “It is one of the best schools in this area. There’s not much that competes with it.

It is not just academically challenging. The school is doing a better job of teaching spirituality than when I was there.

The spiritual element is so important. It doesn’t matter what you do if you fail to serve God. De La Salle will educate our children in understanding what’s important in life.”

The character-building aspect of De La Salle is echoed by Peter. “I remember Br. Casimir being very upset with some freshmen acting up at an assembly. He called the upperclassmen together and told us that we set the example. That we should say to the freshmen, ‘We don’t do that here.’ That became our mantra. “ Frank remembers teachers and coaches adopting the Lasallian attitude. “You learned not to speak unkindly. The coaches would let you have it. You learned to interact with your peers. To be a kind and generous person.”

Over the years, the family has been generous to De La Salle, and believe it’s important to support the school. Frank says, “There aren’t that many institutions like De La Salle around. Kids will get more than an education.”

Alumni News Donald Miriani, SJ ‘52, lives in St. Clair Shores. He recently attended the St. Joe’s Class of 1952 60th reunion. He said it was very well done, and it was great to see so many of his classmates.

Gary Rendz, SJ ‘55, notes he is happily retired.

Joseph Orlando, SJ ‘56, competed in the Anchor Bay Triathlon. His team included his oldest son Ken who swam, and his oldest granddaughter Kathryn, who ran. Joe himself completed the biking portion.

John Oman, SJ ‘57, lives in Canton, Michigan. Despite the distance, he planned to attend the Senior Alumni Luncheon on December 4, 2012.

Alumni in Florida

Dave Zelmanski, ’74, (left), recently met with Bill Sheridan, ’77 (right) and other alumni in Florida. Bill is currently the Defensive Coordinator with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and provided the group with pre-game sideline passes, and then joined the group for dinner.

Dave reports the Brother George stories were “flying all over the place.”

Mike Goeddeke, ‘60, and his wife Dorothy, celebrated their 45th Wedding Anniversary on November 10, 2012.

Mike Jolet, ‘96, graduated from Wayne State University in 2001, and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in 2004. Mike joined the firm of Hewson & Van Hellemont in May 2011. Over the past eight years,he has specialized in insurance fraud defense, and handled over a thousand cases.

Roger Laske, ‘58, is editor of the Polish Eaglet, a journal of the Polish Genealogical Society of Michigan (www.pgsm.org), published three times a year. While researching items for the publication, Roger saw this headstone of some Christian Brothers in the Mt. Elliott Cemetery in Detroit.

Wigs for Kids

Mario Izzi, ‘90 and Chris Goeddeke, ‘86 shared a few moments at the recent Evening of Delights.

Mario’s “long locks” will be donated to the “Wigs for Kids” charity in a few months. In 2011, Mario donated 14” of hair, which is then made into wigs for children who have lost their hair while going through cancer treatments.

Chris also donated hair in 2011 to “Wigs for Kids.”

Although Mario and Chris had never met, their chance encounter revealed they had even more in common than being DLS alumni and growing their hair out for charity. Both grew up in the same neighborhood, attended the same elementary school, and the same middle school.

Book author gives credit to De La Salle and his Catholic Education

Harry Veryser, ‘61, has authored a new book, which will be published in January 2013.

Entitled “It Didn’t Have to Be This Way,” the book tells the story of how our modern economic condition developed. The book is subtitled “Why Boom and Bust is Unnecessary - and How the Austrian School of Economics Breaks the Cycle.” Published by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute, the book will be available in bookstores as well as online at the Amazon and Barnes and Noble websites.

In the book’s acknowledgements, Harry cites one of his De La Salle teachers, Mr. Ted Kopacki, who taught American History. Harry says that Mr. Kopacki planted some of the ideas that are in the book, and personally encouraged him to go to college. “Some of the doors he opened in American and World History were phenomenal.”

Harry also notes the Catholic educational experience he received in both grade school and at DLS. He said, “I

had a superb education.” He fondly remembers various Christian Brothers, including Br. George Synan. “They gave me a basic education that I carried all the way through college and my career.”

Harry earned his undergraduate degree in Philosophy and Economics at UDM, and went on to earn Master’s degrees in Economics and Religious Studies from UDM as well.

Harry is the Director of the Graduate Program of Economics at the University of Detroit Mercy (UDM), and the former chair of the Department of Economics and Finance at Walsh College.

In addition to his faculty status at UDM and Walsh College, Harry has been associated with the Thomas More College of Liberal Arts, St. Mary’s College (Orchard Lake), Northwood University, and Hillsdale College.

His articles have appeared in The Detroit News, the Intercollegiate Review, and The University Bookman.

He is the author of “Our Economic Crisis: Sources and Solutions.”

Harry has extensive service on various advisory boards, including De La Salle Collegiate, and is a past member of the Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission. He is currently on the advisory board of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Midland.

Harry was also the Chairman of the Board and owner of an automotive supply company Stampings Inc., from 1978 - 2005. At one time, Stampings Inc. had 65 employees in two locations - Michigan and Texas - and approximately $10 million in annual sales.

Stampings, Inc. merged with Spring Engineering in 2005, with no debt, and with all employees finding positions with the new firm.

In September 2012, Harry was knighted by the Patriarch of Jerusalem as a “Knight of the Holy Sepulchre” for his work in Catholic Education.

Harry is a member of the Brother George Synan Society.

Whatever Happened To...

Brother Tim Tarmey FSC

Teacher at De La Salle Collegiate 1973 - 1977, 1978 - 1980 Many alumni inquired about Br. Tim Tarmey, after seeing his picture in the last issue of the Collegiate (Fall 2012) in a group of Brothers attending the 50th Anniversary Celebration for Br. Robert Deary.

Br. Tim is teaching at La Salle Institute in Troy, New York, where Br. Carl Malacalza, who also served at De La Salle, is President. Br. Tim has been in Troy since 2009, teaching French, Spanish, and Junior Religion. He says, “The Brothers and the schools have been the joy of my life.”

Br. Tim began high school at La Salle Academy in New York in lower Manhattan, and later transferred to St. Joseph’s in Barrytown, New York. He entered the Brothers in 1963, making his first vows in September 1964.

Br. Tim said, “My calling to the Brothers has been the greatest event of my life, a life in which I am richly blessed, and where I hope I have been able to give back so much of what God has given me.”

He graduated from Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, in 1968, and went on to teach at Sacred Heart High School, a co-ed high school of 1100 students in Yonkers, New York.

While assigned to Sacred Heart, Br. Tim completed his Master’s Degree in French Literature at Middlebury College in Vermont.

When Br. Jerome Stevens, who was

Principal at Sacred Heart, was assigned to De La Salle Collegiate in 1973 as Principal, Br. Tim asked to join the DLS teaching staff. Br. Tim wrote, “Br. Jerome’s tremendous leadership and his manner of school administration drew me to the Motor City. It was an honor to work under his direction. “ Br. Tim’s teaching assignments at DLS included French, Spanish, and Religion.

In 1977, Br. Tim left De La Salle to serve as Sub-Director of Novices in Lake Skaneateles, New York, and returned to Detroit a year later. From 1978 to 1980, he also served as Vocation Director for the New York District of the Brothers (now part of DENA - the District of Eastern North America).

After leaving DLS in 1980, Br. Tim became an administrator for the next several years: Vice-Principal of Student Affairs at Christian Brothers’ Academy in Lincroft, NJ, until 1986; Principal at Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, NJ, for a year; and Principal of La Salle Academy, his alma mater, from 1987 - 1991.

For the next five years, Br. Tim was Campus Minister at Manhattan College.

He returned to teaching in 1996 at Christian Brothers’ Academy in Albany, NY . Br. Tim noted, “It was good to get back to high school where my heart had always been.” He was at CBA Albany for twelve years.

Br. Tim commented, “The interaction with middle school and high school

students is where I have always been happiest and where I feel I always made the most impact. I have learned a lot from kids of that age, and I have been the happiest guy in the world.

I’m so grateful for the great experiences I have had, and the many, many students I have come to know over the years.”

During the 2008 - 2009 school year, Br. Tim went to the Brothers’ Generalate in Rome, participating in an international educational program with the Brothers and other Lasallians. He then received the assignment to LaSalle Institute.

He said, “The high school classroom is where I have always found my home. I plan to continue as long as God can put up with me.”

As for De La Salle, Brother Tim wrote, “Over the years, I have regularly returned to Michigan to visit the Brothers, former students, and the many wonderful friends I was able to make during my very happy years at De La Salle. There will always be a special place in my heart for Michigan and for De La Salle, and for the great students, parents, and families I met. Seven years there were not long enough. They were my most memorable years. De La Salle is truly a special place.”
