PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Dear De La Salle Collegiate Community, It brings me immense joy and pride as we share a remarkable story of dedication and excellence within our school's family. In this edition, you will read about Chris Dean '89, our esteemed Assistant Principal, who was honored with the prestigious Lasallian Educator of the Year Award. This accolade is not just a personal achievement for Chris but a testament to the extraordinary caliber of educators at De La Salle Collegiate. Chris's dedication to our mission, his unwavering commitment to our students, and his innovative approach to education embody the essence of being a Lasallian educator. His achievement shines a spotlight on the collective efforts of our entire teaching staff. Each day, our educators walk through the school doors with passion, knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to shaping the minds and character of the young men entrusted to our care. They do not just teach; they inspire, challenge, and nurture. Each of them deserves recognition for their vital role in our students' lives. As we celebrate this outstanding achievement, I also want to thank our De La Salle community. Your support has been the cornerstone of our success, whether as parents, alumni, donors, or friends. Our work here at De La Salle Collegiate is impossible without your belief in our mission and commitment to our future. Your contributions, both big and small, create an environment where excellence in education thrives; for that, we are eternally grateful. In closing, I am reminded of a quote by Saint John Baptist de La Salle: "Be driven by the love of God because Jesus Christ died for us out of love." Let this love guide us in our daily endeavors to continue building a community of faith, service, and brotherhood. Yours in Lasallian education,
Larry Rancilio ‘86 President, De La Salle Collegiate

Yaek Named Commended Student
He got to know De La Salle through summer camps that he attended, including chemistry and the medical camp. He ultimately decided to attend De La Salle because of the school’s STEM offerings.
Derek is the first DLS student to achieve this recognition since the pandemic.
He is an involved student, and a co-captain of the DLS cross-country team. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the World Cultures Club, the Medical Club, and the Military History Club.
Congratulations to senior Derek Yaek, named a Commended Student in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
He scored in the top 3% nationally, out of 1.5 million students, on the 2022 Preliminary SAT, known as the PSAT, which Derek and other members of the Class of 2024 took in October 2022. Derek was honored at the beginning of a school assembly in mid-October. In addition to his achievement on the PSAT test, Derek scored a 1540 (out of a perfect 1600) on the SAT test. Derek has said he was “sick as a dog” that day, and plans to retake the test for “bragging rights.” Derek attended St. Augustine Grade School in Richmond, in northern Macomb County.
Derek is enrolled in five Advanced Placement (AP) courses this year, and has already taken 10 AP classes. He is ranked second in the Class of 2024, with a cumulative GPA of 4.55.
He volunteers regularly at St. Augustine as an altar server and at parish events, as well as working as a maintenance employee in the school. Derek is currently considering colleges and potential majors. He spent two weeks at Northwestern, but is also interested in Stanford, Duke, Cornell, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Michigan. He is interested in etymology and languages, and has taught himself Latin and some Greek. Derek and his brother Curtis, a sophomore, assist their parents, Jonathan and Jennifer, on the family farm. The Yaeks raise soybeans and corn.

Christopher Dean Named DENA Lasallian Educator of the Year Congratulations to Assistant Principal Christopher Dean, Class of 1989, named the “Lasallian Educator of the Year” by the Christian Brothers of the District of Eastern North America (DENA).
Dean attended St. Peter Grade School (now closed) in Harper Woods and the University of Detroit Mercy for his undergraduate degree. He majored in History, and his teaching certificate is in Social Studies.
Dean is the first De La Salle Collegiate educator to be recognized for this award since its inception in 1987.
He also earned a State of Michigan administrator certificate and has a Master’s of Public Administration from the University of Michigan.
The award is presented to one individual who has been nominated by his peers and administration; those selected for the District Leadership Awards are selected by their ministries, and recognized for their exceptional work in touching the hearts and minds of their students. Principal Brother Ken Kalinowski, ‘84, recognized Dean at a school assembly in mid-October. Dean received his award in person at the November 2023 Huether Conference. He was one of seven recipients nationwide.
Prior to coming to De La Salle in 2004, Dean was a teacher and administrator at St. Alphonsus in Dearborn from 1994-2003, and spent a year at the University of Detroit-Jesuit during the 2003-2004 school year as Dean of Students. “De La Salle has always been and continues to be a truly special place, and I truly enjoy serving this community,” Dean said. “I am very grateful to the De La Salle family.”
“He has tirelessly served our school for over 20 years, as a teacher, administrator, chaperone, and advocate for our boys and school,” Brother Ken said. “I am overwhelmed to even be considered for this award, let alone be named Lasallian Educator of the Year,” Dean said. “It is even more humbling to learn that no one from De La Salle Collegiate has been given this honor, especially considering the number of Brothers and teachers who have come before me or are now working with me.” Dean’s wife Michaele, son Christian ‘19, and daughter Megan, Bishop Foley ‘23, were in attendance. The family lives in St. Clair Shores. Christian is currently working in New York City, while Megan is a freshman at Madonna College, studying American Sign Language.

SCHO OL NEWS DLS Earns Honor Roll Status for AP Course Offerings
Music Program Rings in the Holidays
The College Board recently notified De La Salle that the school has earned Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Roll status for the 2022-2023 school year. The AP School Honor Roll recognizes schools that have done outstanding work to welcome more students into AP courses. DLS earned Honors in the “Silver” category, defined as the percentage of students in the graduating class who took five or more AP exams in high school, with at least one exam taken in either 9th or 10th grade. Assistant Principal Christopher Dean, ‘89, said, “This recognition is further evidence of the achievements of our AP students. The College Board also noted that we achieved a ‘Platinum’ designation in the number of students taking five or more AP courses during their DLS careers. Dean added, “This demonstrates a learning atmosphere where students are encouraged to challenge themselves academically through the most rigorous courses we have available. It also speaks to the relationships that our teachers form with students across the board, not just in AP, based on trust in an effort to perform at their highest level possible.” The College Board also recognized DLS for the number of students in the graduating class (2023) who scored a three or higher on any AP exam taken during high school.
The De La Salle Winter Concert, presented on December 1, featured the school’s Pep and Concert Bands, along with the School Choir. The Regina Choral Ensemble also presented some combined choir pieces with the DLS group. DLS Music Director Robert Cornwell, ‘19, said he is pleased with the students’ improvement. “Their understanding of music is growing every day,” Cornwell said. “I am so proud of the progress they have made over this semester.” In mid-November, two music professors from Cornwell’s alma mater, Albion College, visited DLS. Dr. David Abbott and Dr. Lia Jensen-Abbott spoke with Cornwell’s music classes and also performed during lunchtime in the DLS Chapel.
DLS offers a robust Advanced Placement curriculum, including the following courses for the 2023-2024 school year: • AP Biology • AP Calculus AB • AP Calculus BC • AP Chemistry • AP Environmental Science • AP French • AP Government • AP Human Geography • AP Language and Composition • AP Literature and Composition • AP Microeconomics • AP Physics • AP Psychology • AP Spanish • AP Statistics • AP U.S. History Earlier this year, Dean noted that the May 2023 AP scores were the highest in six years.

LASALLIAN FUND Why Give to the Lasallian Fund?
The Lasallian Fund is the name for our school’s annual request for your support. It is named the Lasallian Fund to reflect that we are a Lasallian school, and follow the Mission of our founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, who instructed us to educate all students, regardless of their financial capability. To be true to that Mission, we keep our tuition as low as possible, actually charging less than it truly costs to educate each student. This is the financial gap we need to fill with the Lasallian Fund. Your gift is a tax-deductible opportunity to support Christian education, and invest in the future of the students of De La Salle Collegiate. We thank all of those listed here who gave to the Lasallian Fund between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. De La Salle Circle

Purple Level: $19.26 Become an annual 1926 Society Supporter. Designed especially for graduates within the last 10 years, graduates will receive access to the Pilot Bar, Business, and Medical Associations. Gold Level: $100.00 Pilot Supporter For those who graduated more than 10 years ago. Receive annual access to the Pilot Bar, Business, and Medical Associations, as well as invitations to future DLS Alumni Association events and special promotions. Christian Brothers: $250.00 Lifetime Member Receive a lifetime admission pass to all DLS home athletic events, access to the Pilot Bar, Business, and Medical Associations, and invitations to future lifetime member events and special promotions. DLS DECA Team Qualifies 21 for State Competition Congratulations to the De La Salle Collegiate DECA team which qualified for the state competition in mid-March 2024. DECA, formally known as Distributive Education Clubs of America, “prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality, and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.”
Rice also cites the assistance of faculty members Mrs. Kathleen Erickson and Mr. Wilson Juncaj, along with DLS Alumni Director Mr. Dennis Koch, who started the DECA group at DLS in 2015. Learn more about DECA and the various events at mideca.org.
Of the 27 students who competed on December 16, 2023, in district competition at Lake Orion High School, 21 will compete at the March 14-16 event held in downtown Detroit. In 2022, DLS qualified 12 students; two went on to the international competition held in Florida. Before competing in person, the DECA students take an online, 100-question multiple choice test in a variety of categories, including both the Individual and the Team Decision Making Events. DLS Business teacher Mr. Michael Rice, the DECA moderator, says the students worked hard preparing for the test and the various events diligently and with great excellence. “I’m proud of the young men,” Rice said. “They worked hard, came together, were exceptionally focused, and got the job done.”

Expanded Lunchtime Includes More Than 30 Clubs At many high schools, students head to the school cafeteria, eat lunch in a 45-minute time period, and then continue classes.
Auburn Hills to Berkley and Bloomfield Hills, from Lake Orion to Oakland Township, after-school participation can be challenging.
At De La Salle Collegiate, however, lunchtime is a full hour. No, not because boys are slow eaters or need more time to consume multiple slices of pizza.
So, the Student Experience team recommended organized time during the school day for activities, clubs, and opportunities to build students’ sense of belonging to De La Salle. Students who might miss meetings because of after-school sports practices, jobs, and transportation issues would be able to participate.
The full-hour accommodates a new lunchtime program, called Inflight, giving students the opportunity to use a portion of their time in a variety of ways: • Checking into any one of more than 30 clubs. • Heading to subject-specific, teacher-led tutoring sessions. • Sitting quietly in a designated area and preparing for a test. • Playing softball outside (seniors only). • Doing homework. • Hanging out with friends in designated areas of the building. • Participating in intramural (IM) sports • And, eating lunch.
A byproduct of the COVID experience, where students ate lunch by grade level, rather than eating whenever they had a free period, had already set the stage to create a more enhanced lunch hour.
How did DLS go from a traditional lunchtime slot to this robust program? Assistant Principal Christopher Dean, ‘89, explained the evolution of the new lunchtime format. “During 2020-21, our first year back from COVID, with masking and social distancing, students weren’t allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria and were together in their Advisory (Homerooms),” Dean said. “The following year, 2021-22, we continued the 30-minute model - upperclassmen eating first, in the cafeteria, and then going to Advisory, and the reverse for underclassmen.” Meanwhile, a team of faculty members, administrators, alumni, and parents met during the 2021-22 school year and worked on a five-year strategic plan. Three separate committees focused on the Student Experience, Marketing and Enrollment, and Funding. The Student Experience group proposed enhancements to the extra-curricular offerings, an important aspect of the high school experience. But, with a student body representing 57 different zip codes in 40 communities, ranging from Armada and

SCHO OL NEWS “The consistent feeling of ‘brotherhood’ and ‘togetherness’ by doing things as a class (such as sharing a meal and participating in activities together) enhanced the DLS experience,” Dean said. Dean said that the resurrection of the DLS Chess Club last winter, attracting over 40 students at a time, helped propel the creation of the robust lunchtime offerings. If It’s Day 1, It Must Be Chess Club? Veteran faculty member Lindsey Tula organized the program and created a “Club Fair” during orientation. “Essentially, students could see what was offered in an ‘open house’ style,” Tula said. “One of the benefits of this was to introduce to freshmen and new students the possibilities that exist.” Tula oversees the effort, with an online schedule document, as well as a hallway bulletin board that identifies activities and rooms. Each club has its own Google Classroom website.
• Most of the clubs meet at least once during the seven-day schedule, although some are seasonal, like the Ski and Snowboard Club. • Some clubs, like the Business Club, are geared to upperclassmen • Chess, Board Games, and E-Sports are so popular that they meet during both sessions. Counselor Andrew Campbell said, “The Chess Club is exploding! We meet twice a week, and usually have at least six games going.” He is looking at competition opportunities and hopes DLS will eventually host its own chess tournament. • The club list includes religious activities, such as Sacramental preparation, science-related groups like the Medical Club, and musical interests: Choir and Pep Band. • Traditional activities, like the Student Council, National Honor Society, school newspaper, and yearbook, are also incorporated into the lunchtime mix. • While nearly every activity is open to any student, some activities are by “invitation only.” Students in need of academic support are steered to these sessions. • Club offerings are flexible, and additional ones may be added as the school year goes along. • The DLS Counseling Department is scheduling college visits during the lunchtime hour, eliminating the once cumbersome process of students signing up in advance and getting a pass to miss class. • Counselor Aaron Solomon, who coordinates the college visit schedule, said the lunchtime format allows students of any grade to attend, not just upperclassmen. Continued on next page...
2 8 | T H E COLLEG IATE | WINTER 2 024
SCHO OL NEWS “I have had more than eight freshmen at all the college visits so far,” Solomon said. “They are able to start getting college information early in their high school careers.” In addition to the small group sessions, the block of time allows for full-grade-level meetings in the gym. Where is…? To track attendance, students scan their IDs as they enter the classroom. Information Technology Director Sheryl Anderson said the scanning system is part of the school’s information system Infinite Campus. She says that students are getting used to scanning themselves in during lunchtime, whether to Advisory or a club, and eventually, will scan themselves into each academic class. “Lindsey Tula has put countless hours into making this work,” said Science teacher Mary Balamucki, who moderates the Medical Club. Balamucki said her group was able to add HOSA (Health Occupation Students of America), a group that helps students learn about the health professions. Balamucki says that HOSA, like DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America), holds competitions. The Medical Club conducted its annual Blood Drive. (See page 34 )
And for students interested in intramurals (IM), the lunchtime block enables more students to participate. Faculty members Joe Novak, ‘03, and Steve Schypinski, ‘06, organize the IM schedule, which eliminates the early morning and after school times of the past, times which made participation difficult for many underclassmen. Novak said approximately 100 students participated in the recently concluded floor hockey season and numbers are healthy for cornhole competitions. Alumnus Ian Cicchini, ‘10, moderates the E-Sports team and says the additional time helps students familiarize themselves with the technology, including computers and Playstations, in a non-competitive environment. The DLS eSports team was ranked in the top 8 out of over 100 other teams in the Eastern United States in their second year of competition in 2022-23. Recently, the team won the State Championship in a league sponsored by Alma College. (See Page 31) Dean said, “One of the most unique things about the DLS experience is that there are opportunities for students to demonstrate and showcase their talents with a wide spectrum of activities.”
Sophomore Gabe Enghauser proposed the Rocketry Club, and Tula says, “Many of the ideas for clubs are coming from the students themselves. We are taking those ideas and tailoring them to fit into the Advisory period and include as many students as possible.” Post-Covid, faculty member Scott Grimmer began lunchtime softball for seniors only. Now in its third season, Grimmer says it is something students look forward to as a “seniors only” privilege. Coaches also use the time for pre-season sessions, gauging student interest, and explaining team requirements and tryouts.

DLS Captures State Championship in eSports League In its third year of competition, the De La Salle Collegiate eSports team won the state championship of the Block House eSports League, sponsored by Alma College. The Overwatch and Smash Ultimate teams were undefeated throughout the fall season in the BEL (Block House eSports League); in 2022, the Pilots reached the Elite Eight in the MHSEL (Michigan High School eSports League). The Rocket League team qualified for the postseason in their first ever year in the MHSEL, but fell in the first round. All four NBA 2K players ultimately fell in the MHSEL Playoffs as well. Faculty member Ian Cicchini, ‘10, coaches the group of approximately 25 students, along with alumnus Sam Bickley, ‘23, who serves as the group’s assistant coach. “I grew up in the age of video games, and it helps when the boys have a coach who actually plays the games,” Cicchini said.
Cicchini said that BEL offers four different games, and DLS participates in two of them. The Rocket League team plays in the MHSEL. The eSports team meets in a fully equipped gaming room, adjacent to the Cafeteria, and makes use of a variety of computers, and Playstations, depending on the game. Team sizes vary from five to ten students. Cicchini notes that the eSports activity teaches teamwork, strategy, and problem-solving, as well as learning how to communicate with team members and deal with pressure and stress - all qualities that apply to future efforts in college and in future careers. “eSports attracts a variety of students,” he said. “We have bowlers, hockey players, football and lacrosse guys. This activity provides a break from the sports they play, and they are using their brain, rather than their body.” Cicchini said that mostly colleges sponsor the various leagues, and many offer scholarships to qualified students. The director of the MHSEL Ryan Cayce, is the Director of Digital Learning and Resources for the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Director of the Michigan High School Esports League. Chris Gaumond, the head coach of Alma’s eSports team, is the director of BEL, the Block House eSports League.
Bickley, now studying at Macomb Community College, was on the team for two years.

Typically, participants wear the same head each year, if they wish. In the past, Jack has also worn the Father Solanus Casey. One year when Jack couldn't participate because of shoulder surgery, former DLS teammate Bob Anderson, ‘78, substituted and did an outstanding job in his absence. The “Big Heads” originally appeared in the parade in the 1930's, but were resurrected by a group of Detroit business professionals in 2008. “The wear and tear and inclement weather can take a toll, so we have to be careful because these are great pieces of artwork,” Jack said. To be one of the 90 or so Big Head marchers, participants pay $250. The funds go towards the preservation and restoration efforts of the world’s largest paper mache head collection.
Head Honcho
Jack Brusewitz, ‘77 Jack Brusewitz, De La Salle Collegiate Class of 1977, was selected the “Head Honcho” of the Big Head Corps for the 2023 Detroit Thanksgiving Day Parade. Jack has been participating with the Big Head Corps for 12 years, and led the group for the first time this year in their walk from the Detroit Historical Museum to the end of the parade at Woodward and Congress. The TV announcers noted that Jack was leading the group, dressed as the “Angry Monkey.” A banner noted his leadership designation, as the Parade Company selects a different “Head Honcho” each year. The Big Heads are made of paper mache, and all of the original ones were made by artists in Italy almost 100 years ago. Each year the Parade Company honors a Detroit legend or celebrity with a new Big Head, which this year was Isiah Thomas. The Head Honcho has the option to wear the new Big Head, but it didn't fit so Jack had to go back to his normal Angry Monkey. “You’ve got to find one that is comfortable on your shoulders and neck as you are wearing this and walking for about three hours,” Brusewitz said.

DLS Hosts Happened Eastside to... Whatever Football Reunion Faculty Member 2007-2018 Brian Barker
He left DLS to take on the assistant principal position at St. Lawrence Grade School in Utica, before taking on the lead role at Star of the Sea. Barker had attended St. Lawrence, and went to Notre Dame, following in an older brother’s footsteps. The family had moved from the Roseville area to Utica, and so Barker commuted with some other St. Lawrence students; the majority of his eighth grade class did go to De La Salle. Both Msgr. Gary Smetanka, ‘74, pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea, and Fr. Brian Meldrum, ‘02, now teaching at Sacred Heart and a weekend assistant at Star, encouraged Barker to apply for the position. Barker and his wife, Jacquelyn, whom he married in 1999, live in Utica; Jacquelyn is an elementary teacher in the Utica Community Schools. Despite the longer commute, Barker is happy to be at Star. Several of the Star families have an affiliation with De La Salle Collegiate, as alumni or as parents of current students.
One-time De La Salle faculty member Brian Barker is now the Principal at Our Lady Star of the Sea Grade School in Grosse Pointe Woods.
“I’ve met some great folks,” Barker said.
Barker’s service at DLS included teaching Theology and later serving as Campus Minister. A 1992 graduate of Harper Woods Notre Dame High School, Barker played two seasons of college hockey at Northern Michigan Universiy before transferring to the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He helped lead the team to the NCAA Division III Frozen Four, including the championship game in 1997. He had lived in Minnesota for his senior year of high school, playing in a junior league. However, Barker realized he wasn’t destined to play professionally, but he did want to coach; a former high school teacher encouraged Barker to pursue education. “I love hockey, so becoming a teacher was a way to get my foot in the door,” Barker said.
Barker (Left) with Star of the Sea Parent and DLS Alumnus Greg DeMars Jr., ‘00.
Barker had earned a communications degree as an undergraduate, and worked in sales while earning a master’s degree in educational leadership from Madonna University, and later a master’s degree in Theology from Sacred Heart Major Seminary. Barker coached hockey at Divine Child High School (200102) and later coached at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s. While on the DLS staff, he also coached the DLS JV Hockey team for a few seasons.
