Ikechi Wins Harvard Prize Book

Nnaemeka Ikechi, Class of 2024, is the recipient of the 2023 Harvard Book Prize, donated by the local Harvard Alumni Club of Detroit.

He said, “I am very honored to be selected for such a prestigious award.”

Ikechi, who has one of the highest cumulative grade point averages in his class, was nominated by Counselor Tony Albani. Albani said that the selected student must display excellence in scholarship and high character, combined with achievement.

He said the award has been presented to a top student at DLS for the past 17 years.

The books are awarded annually in nearly 2,000 high schools around the world. Participating clubs see the Prize Books as a way to help attract the attention of talented young students to the opportunities at Harvard. The book, “Making the Most of College,” provides useful information about the college process, particularly freshman year.

Ikechi is the newly elected Student Council President for the 2023-2024 school year.

In addition to his activity with Student Council, he is a member of the National Honor Society, the Medical Club, and the Black Student Association.

Ikechi plays varsity basketball, and is on the track and field team for high jump, shot put, and discus.

He has already taken three Advanced Placement exams in Human Geography, World History and U.S. History; during May 2023, he took four exams in American Government, Biology, Calculus AB, and English Language and Composition.

Ikechi has already earned his Eagle Scout award with his local Boy Scout troop, and also the “Order of the Arrow,” a national Boy Scout award similar to the National Honor Society.

Ikechi’s college plans include pursuing a career in the medical field, and he also hopes to play college basketball.
