PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear De La Salle Family, As I take my daily walks through the hallways and engage with the students and staff, I recognize what a wonderful place De La Salle Collegiate is and how lucky I am to be in my position. Our staff takes the responsibility of educating and shaping these young men very seriously, and they do it with passion and love.

We strive to make the boys’ educational experience one they will never forget. The four-year growth of each student is significant, and we do our best to prepare these young men for the world outside the school both educationally and morally.

Like the students, we, as an institution, must continue to grow and evolve. The student of today is different from the student of 30 years ago. While the content is similar, how we engage each learner is different. Technology has made it easier in many ways and tougher in others. Access to information and the ability to transfer data has never been more effortless, and educators are challenged with how to use these paths of knowledge to better instruct and prepare our students.

In February, my team and I gave the State of the School address.

We were able to highlight where we have been and where we are headed. We received a favorable response to the event, and I would encourage you to watch the recording. You can find it on the school’s website. The next step in our development process is to create a new strategic plan. We have started the process and are projecting to have it finished sometime this summer.

I appreciate any of you who took the time to fill out the survey.

We will report on the plan after it is complete.

As we continue the work of educating the students, I want to thank everyone who has given back in some way. It needs to be restated that we could not do it without you. In a special way, I would like to extend my sincerest appreciation to Mark and Mary Ann Rusch for their generous gift to the school. De La Salle is a better place when we are all rowing in the same direction.

Please keep us in your prayers and know that you are in ours.

MISSION STATEMENT De La Salle Collegiate is dedicated to the Lasallian Catholic education of its diverse students, including the poor and disadvantaged. We are a college-preparatory school inspired by the spirit and tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle, where learning takes place in the presence of God. Each student is encouraged to develop his faith, character, intellect, and morality.

RUSCH-ING AHEAD Alumnus Pledges $1 Million to ‘Pay it Forward’ Alumnus Mark Rusch, ‘75 puts a lot of stock into the Lasallian, faith-filled education he received while attending De La Salle. He fully embodies and embraces the school’s motto, Builders of Boys.

Makers of Men., and has lived his life doing just that.

He admits that the teachings of the Christian Brothers at De La Salle and his experiences at the all-boys college preparatory school helped build him into the man he is today. Additionally, he’s now committed to ensuring that present DLS students have the same rewarding experience.

One way in which he's displayed that commitment is through pledging a $1 million gift to his alma mater.

Rusch had known for some time that he wanted to give back to De La Salle, but initially didn’t know when to do it. However, after thoughtful consideration and through consulting with his wife, Mary Ann, he decided that this was the right time to make such a contribution to the school that he deeply loves.

“Our philosophy, to put it bluntly, was why wait until you’re dead?

They could use the money now to do good things,” Rusch said.

“You know, I’m giving money to De La Salle unencumbered. So, I told the school to do whatever it wants with the money, other than using it for operating expenses. I wanted it to make a difference in somebody’s life and now, rather than in 10, 20 or 30 years from now. Subsequently, the current students will have a chance to become great men of the Collegiate and great men in their respective communities.”

He was inspired to give by his own experiences as a Pilot student, which included being a member of the school’s Spanish club,

and being unable to go on the club’s senior trip to Spain because of a lack of money.

“You know, I said to (De La Salle Advancement Director) Greg (Esler), it doesn’t matter what you use the funds for. But, if there are some kids that can’t afford to pay for something, like a trip to Spain or to France as part of the French club, then maybe my gift can be used as seed money,” Rusch said. “For instance, if the student goes out and raises half the money for the trip, then De La Salle will cover the rest of the costs. So, I didn’t get the chance to do a lot of those things when I was that age, and I’m hoping however they use the money that it will help promote the school and maybe even help kids experience things that they otherwise could not afford.”

Rusch’s $1 million gift is the third seven-figure donation in the 96-year history of De La Salle.

DLS Advancement Director Greg Esler was touched not only by Rusch’s generosity to the school, but also by the way in which Rusch handled himself leading up to his donation.

“Mark Rusch is the humblest man I have ever met in my life.

Mark and his wife Mary Ann wanted no recognition for their very generous gift. I mean none,” Esler said. “Winston Churchill had a great philosophy on life. He once said, ‘We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.’ Mark and Mary Ann have definitely made life much better for many Pilots for years to come.”

It marks the first time De La Salle has had its own buses in more than 10 years, and it's expected that the purchase will save the school over $100,000 annually in vehicle rental fees.

This new DLS-owned method of transportation will make it easier for students to get to school and to a variety of events, including field trips, service projects, religious retreats and sporting events.

“I’m thrilled that De La Salle was able to get those buses to help the students and to hopefully bring other students that did not have a way to get to De La Salle or were previously considering somewhere else for high school,” Rusch said. “And, now they’ve got transportation and can make it here to De La Salle and experience the same kind of great education that I did.”

De La Salle Director of Operations Joe Gerardi, '86, views the buses as a "game changer" for the school.

“I believe that the new buses are a game changer on a number of levels,” Gerardi said. “They save us money in terms of rental fees, provide greater dependability and offer options to families who might not otherwise be considering De La Salle. And finally, there’s the element of our students showing up at events in buses with the De La Salle name on them.”

Esler and Gerardi believe the buses will play a role in De La Salle being able to thrive for years to come, and ensuring that such is the case is of utmost importance to Rusch.

“I just hope to be able to, in a small way, contribute to De La Salle’s efforts to remain alive and thrive in the decades ahead,” Rusch said.

Rusch has long dedicated himself to a life of philanthropy and serving others, and as a result, is a Pilot in every sense of the word.

Undoubtedly, De La Salle is proud to call him one of its own.

STATE OF THE SCHOOL On February 16, 2022, De La Salle Collegiate President Larry Rancilio, ‘86, headlined an evening presentation for faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the school, with a “State of the School” panel that included other key personnel.

Presented both in person at the Bill Fox Gymnasium, and via live stream, the entire group of speeches is available on video on the DLS YouTube Channel.

Rancilio also noted that the Brillati family has been selected as the 2022 Christian Brothers’ Dinner Honoree.

Additionally, Rancilio announced that DLS is embarking on a strategic plan over the next several months, and asked for all alumni, parents, and friends of the school to provide input on a survey.

In addition to Rancilio, Board Chair Jack Brusewitz, ‘77, spoke about the role of the Board as the governing body of the school.

Consisting of a variety of alumni and friends of the school, as well as Brothers

from the District of Eastern North America (DENA), the Board has four standing committees, as well as the authority to select the president. As Board Chair, Brusewitz represents the Board to outside parties.

ACADEMIC & LASALLIAN UPDATE Principal Br. Ken Kalinowski, FSC, ‘84, described the Lasallian accreditation process, completed in the fall, and shared highlights from the assessment committee. Over the last two years, nearly 30 students have received the sacraments of Baptism, Communion, or Confirmation while enrolled at DLS with the help of the Campus Ministry Program. He noted that there are class retreats for all grade levels, in addition to the Kairos Retreat program, noted by many alumni as a highlight of their high school years.

Br. Ken also described numerous service opportunities, including food drives, tutoring, and assistance at Detroit inner-city parishes.

With the assistance of the Warren Police Department, DLS has revamped its Crisis

Drills in an effort to improve response time, especially in light of the Oxford High School shootings.

Additionally, Br. Ken reviewed the school’s grading system, eligibility for participation, and the number of students in the National Honor Society and in Advanced Placement classes. Br. Ken said 212 students are currently enrolled in an AP class, and 127 students are in two or more AP courses.

ADMISSIONS UPDATE​ Zach Issa, ‘09, Director of Admissions, reported that there is currently a 40% increase in applications for the Class of 2026, compared to the same time period last year. Additionally, approximately 30 students have transferred to DLS during the 2021-2022 school year.

Issa also reported that the Pilot for a Day visits, suspended during the 2020-2021 school year due to COVID, have been successful, with over 160 visits thus far.

The Admissions Office has also held three future Pilot Appreciation nights, with over 100 future students and their families in attendance.

The addition of three new buses will also help DLS expand its footprint. ​ADVANCEMENT UPDATE Director of Advancement Greg Esler reported that despite the hardships of COVID-19, the Advancement Department has had numerous successes, including an increase in revenues from Giving Tuesday, the Annual Raffle, the Christian Brothers’ Dinner, and charitable donations from various individuals.

Additionally, five new endowed scholarship funds have been created, including ones established by Tim Grajewski, ‘63, the family of Alexander Scapini, ‘16, Dan Loepp, ‘75, Larry Rancilio, ‘86, and past De La Salle parent Wally Ozog.

Esler noted that in the school’s existence, there have been three seven-figure donations, two of which have been acquired in the last year alone.

The Advancement Department has also organized the Evening of Delights, the 2021 Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, the Military Wall of Honor Dedication

Ceremony, and the Loepp Family Foundation Pilot Center and Dedication Ceremony. ​ DIVERSITY & INCLUSION UPDATE Marta Rhea-Johnson, Director of Diversity and Inclusion (DEI), noted a variety of initiatives.

Rhea-Johnson described how a DEI committee, including parents, alumni, and board members, took time to review the school’s activities and created a strategic plan. Among the activities are professional development sessions on DEI for faculty and staff, a monthly “brown bag” lunch workshop, and monthly cultural celebrations.

Rhea-Johnson has also introduced a variety of professional growth projects. She also leads an effort to gather a variety of information to make data-driven decisions.

ATHLETICS UPDATE Dan Rohn, Director of Athletics, described his focus on ensuring that the coaching staff focuses on respect, faith,

inclusivity, and a quality athletic experience. He noted the improvements in facilities in the school’s weight room, as well as athletic facilities at the Brother Robert Activity Center (BRAC).

Rohn also praised his associate athletic directors, Andy Crowley and Dennis Parks, as well as the athletic trainers, and athletic information director Vito Chirco.

Additionally, Rohn has worked with community organizations to establish relationships to expand the school’s reach.

Rohn and his team also headed the 2021 Athletic Hall of Fame ceremony, the Evening of Delights fundraiser, and worked closely with the DLS Dads' Club. Working with the Advancement Department, his Athletics team has raised over $200,000 for athletic needs.

Brillati Family Named 2022 CBD Honoree Congratulations to the 2022 Christian Brothers' Dinner Honoree: the Brillati Family, including alumni Paul Brillati, ‘90, Mike Brillati, ‘93, and Steve Brillati, ‘93.

DLS President Larry Rancilio announced the family's selection as part of the 2022 State of the School Address on February 16, 2022.

“I can think of few other families who have meant as much to the De La Salle community as the Brillatis,” Rancilio said. “Paul, Steve, and Mike have followed in the footsteps of their parents, Len and Diana, and are huge supporters of what we are doing at the school. Not only have they provided financial assistance, but they have sent their boys here. It is a testament to their belief in the education we are providing to young men. I am overjoyed that they are being honored.”

“Thank you, all,” Paul Brillati said. “This is beyond words. I feel very humbled and honored. We as brothers love De La Salle and what we stand for, the continued legacy and the strong young men DLS creates. It goes without saying my brothers and I don’t feel worthy of this recognition. We do this for what the school has provided us and our families.”

“It is an absolute honor to serve the school that has done so much for our family,” Steve Brillati said. “We are humbled and excited to accept this great award. Thank you, and God bless you all.”

Mike Brillati was also honored as the 2017 Honoree, recognizing his many years as chairman of the Christian Brothers’ Dinner Committee, from 2007-2016. The late Leonard Brillati, their

father, was honored in 2001.

Advancement Director Greg Esler praised the Brillatis. “I have known the Brillati boys since they were very young, and have watched them grow into great husbands, fathers, and leaders.

They have been blessed with wonderful parents who taught them how faith and hard work pay off. The Brillati boys have shown their tremendous appreciation of their love for De La Salle by volunteering their time. True Pilots!”

Matt Loria, ‘95, Dinner Committee Chair since 2019, said, “Congratulations Paul, Steve, and Mike. This is such a well-deserved honor for you and the Brillati family!”

Loria added, "The Brillati family has been so integral to De La Salle.

Even before Paul, Steve, and Mike had children at the school, I don’t think a month went by without a Brillati in the building assisting with something. They have been an active presence since the time their father was involved. Since Leonard left us, the legacy has been carried on by Mrs. Brillati, her children, their spouses, and their children.

"The Brillati boys have all been like older brothers to me in one way or another. I am proud to call them all my friends. DLS has an amazing fraternity of alumni. This is something no other school, parochial or public, will ever match. The Brillati family does a fantastic job of keeping the bonds of these relationships alive and thriving.

"I couldn’t be more proud than to have made the telephone call to the Brillati family asking for their acceptance of this honor," Loria concluded.

41ST ANNUAL CHRISTIAN BROTHERS’ DINNER

"In my two years at DLS, I’m not sure there is a family that has made me feel more welcomed, and helped me understand what DLS is all about,” said Athletic Director Dan Rohn. "They actually drive me to do the very best I can, because I want to make them proud, because I know what this school means to them and to their family."

Dennis Koch, ‘94, Director of Alumni Relations, said, “The Brillatis are De La Salle. They represent the very best of who we are. In

their own unique ways, each gives of their time in so many ways and are always constant proponents of De La Salle.”

Koch praised Paul for his construction contributions and expertise to create the “state-of-the-art” TrackMan Golf Simulator Center at the Brother Robert Activity Center (BRAC) a reality.

CAREER DAY 2022

Over 50 alumni and other friends of De La Salle Collegiate participated in the 2022 Career Day on Wednesday, January 12, sharing information about their chosen professions.

Organized by DLS Alumni Director Dennis Koch, the speakers were assigned to various rooms, while students followed their class schedules.

While the majority of the speakers were in person, nearly 20 alumni met with students virtually using the school’s Google Meet technology. Alumnus Jason Trombley, '94, drove in from Chicago, while Anthony Assad, '07, flew in from New York City.

Mark Wisniewski, ‘83, was a first-time presenter.

Vollmer further noted government programs such as Teach for America and Build for America that allow students to eliminate some of their college tuition loans.

Aaron Schmid, ‘94, Deputy Chief of the Clinton Township Fire Department, represented yet another profession that many DLS alumni have followed. Schmid originally began college at Oakland University, and soon joined the Detroit Fire Department; he has been in Clinton Township for 23 years.

“It’s good to come back and talk with students about the different career paths and options they have.”

Some speakers teamed up, such as realtors Anthony Rubino, ‘01, and Louis Ciotti, ‘00. Both commented about giving back and providing a “different voice” for students.

“Career Day gives alumni the opportunity to return to the school and see all the great things going on,” Wisniewski said. “I actually had a chance to see a fellow 1983 graduate I haven’t seen since our high school graduation.”

“We’re out here in the real world,” Rubino said.“And I think we can relate to students in a way that their teachers can’t.”

Wisniewski covered a variety of topics in his presentation, talking about college decisions and a student’s desired occupation.

Students appreciated the opportunity to meet alumni and learn about other options.

“It makes sense to go to a local law school if you want to practice law in Michigan.”

Wisniewski also stressed the importance of networking and an accurate résumé. He also told students, “Make sure you balance your family and work life. Make sure you like your job. And it’s OK to switch majors in college. Keep your options open.”

Dr. Jeff Fisher, ‘96, another first-timer, talked with students about his experiences attending the University of Michigan, and then medical school at Loyola (Chicago). Dr. Fisher has a general practice in Warren.

Jim Muer, ‘85, a construction project manager, urged students “to recognize the options available to them.”

Muer noted that when he started college at Michigan State University, he struggled in business classes before discovering the construction management program.

While Jim Vollmer, ‘11, holds a degree in accounting and an MBA from the University of Detroit Mercy, he is a civilian employee of the U.S. Army. “I decided the auto industry wasn’t for me, and neither was investment management. I’m here today to stress with students that there are options.”

BUILDERS of BOYS. MAKERS of MEN. Senior Anthony Youngblood listened to Gino Tozzi, ‘99, who turned to real estate after a lengthy career in college education. “Mr. Tozzi talked about the value of earning your license and doing real estate as a part- or full-time job. I hadn’t thought about this at all, and am definitely going to keep this in mind as a potential side job.”

Senior Abishek Nirmal-Kumar plans to go into law, and has been considering philosophy as an undergraduate major. But after listening to Jim Vollmer, Abishek is now thinking about an economics major.

Alumni Parents Involved in DLS Dads’ Club DLS Dads’ Club President Joe Hallman, ‘88, is the parent of two recent De La Salle graduates - Joey in 2016, and Liam in 2018. His daughter, Olivia, is a 2020 Regina graduate, leaving his youngest child, Brennan, a current senior, the last of the line.

So why did this alumnus and parent decide to become involved as his youngest child is about to graduate?

“It was the right time,” Hallman said. “Not a lot was going on with the Dads during COVID. I talked with other alumni from my Class of ‘88, and said let’s make it like when we were kids. Let’s leave a legacy.”

Also heavily involved are Mark Wheeler, ‘97, David Femminineo, ‘90, Paul Brillati, ‘90, and Tom Landa, ‘97.

Attendance at the monthly meetings this year has been higher than ever.

“We try to have a guest speaker each month,” Hallman said, “Jimmy Maisano has come up with a ‘Cocktail of the Month’ and we’re drawing dads in.”

The group has also planned a euchre tournament, has plans for fowling, and recently met at the Brother Robert Activity Center (BRAC) to try out the new golf simulator.

“The biggest thing was we didn’t want the same people doing everything, and to build a faith community.”

It’s not all play, however. The Brothers’ house had a garage door problem, and the dads took on its repair. They’ve assisted at athletic events, with CBA activities, and the DLS Advancement Department, as well as helping the Regina Dads’ Club. “Brian Chomicz is President of the Regina group, so we try to help each other out,” Hallman said.

Joining Hallman on the board is Steve Haag, ‘88, serving as Secretary. Steve’s sons are alumni Chris, ‘14, and Adam, ‘16.

Hallman reached out to classmate Jim Maisano, ‘88, father of current sophomore Joe. Jim has taken on handling food and drinks for Dads’ Club meetings, as well as serving as a sophomore rep.

“Our boys have had a wonderful experience,” Hallman said. “You get more out of your investment if you are actively involved.

Stay engaged and make new friends and learn more about the school.”

ALUMNI NEWS The Great Resignation or the Great Opportunity?

Editor’s Note: Two years, 24 months, 104 weeks, over 730 days, over 17,000 hours.

noted as more workplaces reopen, most teleworkers say they are working from home by choice rather than necessity, with roughly six in 10 working from home all or most of the time.

Working from home, a new experience for a majority of workers, has enabled people to balance their work and personal lives. While they note they find it easier to get their work done and meet deadlines, 60% say they feel less connected with their co-workers.

The New York Times reported in December 2021 that surveys showed more than half of U.S. workers are looking for new employment. One economist describes it as “The Great Reallocation.”

That’s how long COVID-19 has gripped our world, our nation, our economy. Given us a whole new vocabulary: N95 masks.

Omicron. Variants. Social distancing.

But enough Googling of studies, and looking at graphs that will become part of some future doctoral dissertation in economics or human resources, something that will gather dust – oops showing my age - or become a digital orphan somewhere in the cyberspace of a university.

And in the process, as schools closed, and teaching became a “virtual” experience, the American workplace has changed.

Numerous studies and articles have noted how the pandemic has reshaped work in America.

We asked our DLS alumni to describe how the pandemic has impacted their lives and families, and over 50 responded. We thank them for taking the time to share their experiences.

I retired in 2018 from a global corporation, and then unretired in 2021 with two different opportunities. I founded a consulting company with former colleagues as they try to navigate their companies into this new world. And I joined a finance -information start up. In 2020, both my children returned home to our Northern Michigan lake house, and it was wonderful to experience extended family time in a very pleasant setting. Our whole family was together for three months, something not possible before COVID. – Greg Martin, ‘86

I accepted a new job, one that was going to take me to a new city, on the afternoon of March 11, 2020. Hours later, the NBA season was postponed, the president banned all travel to Europe, and the great shutdown was underway. I had to learn the challenge of a remote environment, learning the geography and politics of an organization, all while 1,000 miles away from my peers and colleagues. I learned the importance of relationships and touching base with folks just for the sake of making a connection. That became more important than the work itself. I have now transitioned to a hybrid work environment, but remember that first year where I literally learned it all while 100% isolated.

I am working 100% from home using video conferencing. Before COVID, I was flying somewhere two-three times a month.

– Patrick Hensler, ‘76 In 2020, we were heavily impacted as our business depends on commercial construction. When job sites closed down due to the pandemic, our sales dried up. Once companies figured out a new operating plan, business slowly began to resume. 2021 has seen new opportunities as buildings are now going “touchless” wherever possible. That’s created new sales opportunities for our products and services to automate door operations.

– Neil Schoenherr, ‘83 There has been a greater recognition that workers are able to accomplish just as much, if not more, at home. While I still prefer to go to my law office, and do so on a daily basis, I know that if I have to work remotely I can.

My work (law enforcement) got very quiet for a short period of time during the lockdown. Calls were limited to domestics, neighbors telling on neighbors for having “non-essential” work going on, and driving by kids’ birthday parties. Things have returned to normal, crime is back up and we are busy.

– Kevin Smith, ‘03 Since March 2020, with only brief times in the office (Child Welfare worker) until June 2021, almost all of my contact with children and families was done by video conference. How do you truly verify a child’s safety and well-being by video? How do you engage parents in counseling and other services?

The group discussed how the pandemic has impacted their courtrooms, and how they each use Zoom calls to handle cases.

Pete Lucido, ‘78, Macomb County Prosecutor, was also in attendance and commented on how the Prosecutor’s office is utilizing virtual tools.

Pilot Bar Association Holds Annual Meeting The Pilot Bar Association met on November 16, 2021, for its Annual Meeting at Villa Penna in Clinton Township.

Tim Orlando, a past parent and president of the group, welcomed the more than 30 members to the evening.

Dennis Koch, ‘94, DLS Director of Alumni Relations, was pleased with the turnout.

“These men are tremendous professionals,” Koch said. “And their interest in the Bar Association, and how it can benefit not only themselves, but also young alumni and current students, is really terrific.”

Mike Kus, ‘69, led a panel discussion that included Michigan Supreme Court Justice David Viviano, ‘90, and District Court

If you were already ahead of the curve on technology use at your company, it was easier to pivot to remote working. The problem occurred when dealing with other companies or individuals not up to speed; leaving voicemails unreturned for three to four days is never good for business. For the most part, the court system continued to work. Gone are the days of leaving the office and driving an hour for a 10-minute motion or hearing. That threehour event can now be accomplished in 20 minutes thanks to technology. Zoom has allowed us to tackle multiple things in one day.

– Mark Wisniewski, ‘83 I used to travel the globe, teaching my problem-solving training class (for General Motors) because we felt it HAD to be done in person. COVID changed all that and now we teach via Microsoft teams. Yes, I would rather be in person, but can now teach in North America, South America, or even China. Working remotely has improved my quality of life. My wife and I discovered each other again. I am closer to my children. I don’t think my 5-yearold remembers the world when I used to leave for work.

– Jonathan D’Angelo, ‘00 Considered an essential worker, I have worked full time through the pandemic at Detroit Receiving Hospital, a focal point for the virus. Elective surgeries have been curtailed, and office visits reduced. The hospital is short of workers, as are nearby restaurants; how they stay in business is a mystery.

– Dr. Charles Lucas, ‘55

I spent 2020, the first year of COVID, working in the Pentagon in a reduced staff environment and working from home. Due to the classified nature of my position, working from home was difficult, and I retired at the end of 2020 from government service. I was hired as a defense consultant, working remotely from Ann Arbor, Michigan. My switch has resulted in working mostly on unclassified projects but is still rewarding.

– Keith Kowalski, ‘78 COVID opened up opportunities for our businesses to shift our focus into other markets. We had a few projects that didn’t materialize as we paused funding and investment opportunities until we understood how COVID would affect the general public.

However, we did not simply shut our doors. We looked to continue our narrative as a Detroit-focused developer, seeking to reimagine retail spaces and reprogram them as economic catalysts for areas of Detroit in need. We have since launched a multi-family apartment complex in Lansing, and grown substantially as a business. COVID has allowed me to spend more time than usual with my immediate family; we have always been a tight family, but COVID has brought us even closer together.

ALUMNI NEWS My day-to-day job involves managing software delivery.

Ironically I took this work from home job just before COVID. I wanted to get away from the 1.5-hour commute each day. My high school-aged children were most affected when they shifted to virtual learning. The isolation affected them, and the importance of mental health became a focus. We allowed them to attend class virtually with their friends in small groups so they could still have some social interaction. It is definitely stressful. I don’t know how my colleagues with elementary school kids juggled and multi-tasked work while educating their own children.

– Andy Makar, ‘92 I am in technical sales and support 100 global customers with IT, Cyber Security, Applications, and so on. Prior to COVID, I traveled weekly and had roughly 200k miles a year. Since the lockdowns, I have been confined to video calls for 10-12 hours a day, a massive struggle for me as well as my customers. When I traveled, I could read the room, body language, and build relationships. Today’s environment is extremely challenging.

– David Jansen, ‘90 It became incredibly difficult to navigate what was the right thing to do for our team, and to keep them and our clients safe. With shortages, price increases of nearly 50% in less than a year have caused wait times of nearly eight months for certain systems or products.

– Bill Burkhardt Jr., ‘03 As a doctor in primary care, I continued to work every day throughout the pandemic. Even as my office closed temporarily, I worked in the hospital for a month. My wife and I are both doctors, and our kids go to Catholic schools. They have been in person for the majority of the pandemic.

– Dr. Jon Tosch, ‘94 In the “before times,” I was in court a few times a week, attending depositions, participating in mediations, and networking with clients. Now, almost all of this is handled remotely over videoconference or the phone, or it doesn't happen at all. We've had to come up with creative ways to meet with opposing counsel. My wife and I have 3-year-old twins. Both of us have busy careers and piecing together child care has been an incredible challenge. It was difficult before COVID, but every time one of the kids gets a sniffle, it’s a scramble to figure out what to do next.

– Mark Vanneste, ‘97 I have been working from home almost exclusively, except for occasional travel to work on different construction projects. We have learned to work extremely well online and have maintained and increased our productivity through the pandemic.

– Brian Popis, ‘11

Due to the stay-home mandates, there was significantly less automobile traffic, and fewer auto accidents for a significant period of time in 2020. This obviously affected my auto accident injury attorney practice negatively. However, the change to Zoom court hearings has revolutionized the practice of law. My family enjoyed the increased time spent together at home.

– David Femminineo, ‘90 Working from home almost exclusively has enabled me to take more time off for activities such as exercise and personal errands, facilitating improved physical and mental health. However, in my practice as an intellectual property attorney, the work has slowed down somewhat. Engineers working from home meant less collaboration, and fewer new inventions, thereby reducing patent applications.

– Bill Kolakowski, ‘89 I work in marketing and work from home, except for in-person photo and video shoots. However, those shoots are fewer now and with much more caution. We have a young son, and I get to see him all day, every day.

– Bryan Carroll, ‘10 We relocated to North Carolina in February 2020, due to my wife’s job. I had worked for GM since 2013, but they wouldn’t allow me to work remotely. After a year of searching in NC, I landed a job in commercial HVAC. I haven’t been able to meet many colleagues or customers. It’s been a tough battle in an industry which still does much business with a handshake. I haven’t seen the inside of my kids’ daycare. It’s kind of weird dropping them at the front door.

– John Gave, ‘04 Since I am a chiropractor, I can’t work from home. We had a few days to figure out how to adjust seeing our patients, and went from seeing 40-50 each day to 4-5. As time went on that got back to normal, and we have had to schedule patients differently, which actually works out better for the flow of our office. We have realized how important faith and family are in our lives. We have been able to weed out those in our lives who aren’t congruent with our life philosophies. The little things just don’t mean as much as they used to; family and friends do.

– Brad Sabo, ‘03 More than ever, emotion is driving buying decisions for both consumers and businesses. Buyers must be convinced that they can be successful in changing how they operate their business with a new product or service. Price and savings alone are often not enough to close the sale. More than packaged marketing materials or a website, conversations, questions, and videos move customers to buy. Don’t force people back into the office.

Make your team and your environment places where people want to interact. Make the decision their own.

Wolanin Addresses Class of 2022 at 1926 Society Breakfast Craig Wolanin, De La Salle Collegiate Class of ‘85, addressed the Class of 2022 at the annual 1926 Society Breakfast held at the Detroit Athletic Club on November 12, 2021.

Wolanin, a recent inductee into the DLS Athletic Hall of Fame, spoke about his time as a student, and as a professional hockey player.

For the past several years, following his retirement from hockey, Wolanin has worked with the Frank Rewold Construction Co. in business development.

Married and the father of three children, Wolanin coaches youth hockey in Troy, and is active in the Ted Lindsay Foundation.

ALUMNI NEWS On November 7, 2021, the De La Salle Collegiate community gathered to dedicate a new Military Wall of Honor, recognizing alumni from De La Salle and St. Joseph’s High School who have served or are actively serving in the United States Armed Forces.

The centerpiece of the Military Wall is a picture of Lt. Robert L. Poxon, class of 1965, who died in Vietnam in 1969, and posthumously received the Congressional Medal of Honor from President Richard Nixon in 1972. Lt. Poxon’s Medal of Honor citation is also displayed along with a brief history of the Medal of Honor and a listing of other significant recipients.

The display is on the east wall of the school’s Commons, near the front entrance.

The project, spearheaded by DLS staff member Mike Jolly, himself a military veteran, came together with the support of the school administration and a committee of alumni, staff members, and veterans. Jolly served in the U.S. Army for six years, including a year of active duty in South Korea during the Vietnam War. “First, we want to honor the service of our DLS and SJ alumni,” Jolly said. “Secondly, we want to inspire our current students to service of any kind - not only military service but all kinds of selfless giving. And lastly, if this presentation can serve as a model for other organizations that wish to recognize service, so much the better.”

MILITARY WALL OF HONOR DEDICATED Recognizes Alumni Veterans Jolly expanded on the service aspect, adding, “We are not a military academy, and most of our kids come from civilian families. Few planned on the military as a career. Yet, our alumni - going back to World War 2 and Korea and Vietnam - when called on, they answered the call.”

Paul Kucharek, ‘83, a retired U.S. Air Force colonel, delivered the keynote address. Kucharek, who lives in Wyoming, served on active duty for 30 years, from 1988-2018, and amassed over 3,000 flying hours, inluding

200 combat sorties in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

“Every veteran whose name is on this memorial was molded by interactions they had at this school. I promise you that happened,” said Kucharek. “For each of these veterans, myself included, this school is today, and always has been and always will be, more than a building. It’s always going to be about the people.”

Lt. Poxon’s family was also present, including his sister Karen Beckwith, who spoke on

behalf of the family. She also served on the Military Wall of Honor committee.

DLS staff members John Berlin, Vicki Granger, and Dennis Koch read the list of names on the Wall.

Selfridge Air National Guard Base provided the color guard and The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars were in attendance. Inspiring and educational displays were provided by The American Legion Post 326 (named in honor of 1LT Robert L. Poxon)

Military personnel present received a special De La Salle Military Challenge Coin, specially designed for the dedication. The coin features St. John Baptist de La Salle on one side and shows the flag and wording honoring all who served on the other.

Junior Brendan Milligan played “Taps” on the trumpet to conclude the ceremony.

Several donors also contributed to the effort,

including Mr. Jerry Gamalski, Mr. John Nicol (‘65), a classmate of Poxon’s, Mr. Mark Torzy (‘75), Nick Frontczak (‘61) and the Class of ‘61, and Charlie Seip (‘95). The De La Salle Dads’ Club provided significant assistance to our school’s earlier military service display.

ALUMNI NEWS Alumni Gather, Start New Christmas Tradition Uniting All Classes

For Mark Wisniewski, Class of 1983, Christmas is always a special time. One of the sponsors of the 2020 Christmas tree in front of the school, Wisniewski approached President Larry Rancilio, ‘86, in October with an idea for a new tradition.

“I thought creating a tradition with one representative from every class placing an ornament on the front hallway tree, with his name and class year on the tag, would be a way to keep alumni engaged in the school, and recognize they are a part of a great tradition,” Wisniewski said.

Working with Dennis Koch, ‘94, Director of Alumni Relations, each class captain was invited to attend the ceremony on Monday, November 29, 2021.

Rancilio said, “This was a great start to a new tradition and a wonderful way to include an alumnus, or his representative, from every class.”

Koch was enthusiastic about the project. “We had more than 30 alumni, representing classes from 1950 to 2021. They represent different decades, different generations. But they all have one thing in common: They are all Pilots.” Following the ornament placement, the group gathered outside for the tree lighting.

Wisniewski sponsored both the ornament project and the tree lighting.

“Now each of those class captains will have his own ornament, and will nominate one of his classmates to represent that particular year in 2022,” Wisniewski said. “This also allows the present De La Salle students to see that it is not just about the four years they are in the building; they will soon be part of a group of men that spans back to 1926.”

ALUMNI NEWS ALUMNI Spotlight Andy Gallas, ‘00

“I had been thinking about Chicago for a while, from a real estate perspective, and liked the idea of living in a big city,” he said.

Andy Gallas, Class of 2000, lives in the Chicago area, in the northern suburb of Lake Forest, and is a Senior Managing Director and commercial realtor for Newmark, a publicly traded company. A 2004 Michigan graduate, with a degree in Political Science, Andy initially thought of going to law school.

But the thought of thousands in debt and the prospect of another three years in school led him to look elsewhere.

Another DLS alum, Doug Passon, ‘99, one of his college roommates, contacted Andy about working in real estate. He initially worked for a company in Southfield, mentored by a Brother Rice alumnus.

In 2008, Andy transferred to the firm’s Chicago office, and lived downtown until 2016.

He married his wife, Kirstin, in 2013, and they recently welcomed their third child; Kirstin is a physician’s assistant.

Andy said family visits often, and he has friends who have moved to the Lake Forest area as well. He notes that fellow DLS alumni Jay Soave, ’93, and Jason Trombley, ‘94, both also in real estate, live within a few miles of each other. All three are University of Michigan alumni and still gather frequently to watch football games, golf, and “watch their children terrorize each other.”

Andy has enjoyed attending the Chicago DLS alumni events.

“I didn’t realize how many of us are here, and how many live fairly close to each other,” he said.“ It’s nice to reconnect with other alumni and remember the good times we had. Whether guys are 20 years older, or 15 years younger, we’ve benefited from knowing other alumni personally and professionally.”

Athletic Hall of Fame Seeking Nominations for Class of 2022

ALUMNI BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT EXPANDS The 12th Annual Alumni Basketball Tournament took place on March 6, featuring teams from the 1980s to the present. Getting ready meant alumni had to dig through their closets to find their old basketball shoes and reversible jerseys to come back to their alma mater and play. They competed like they once did as younger men, when they were excited to play basketball all day. While some played basketball at De La Salle, others didn’t … but it didn’t matter. They came to play basketball with their friends, just as they did five, or 10, or up to 40 years ago!

Bob Anderson, ‘78, who played in the All-Star game (the non-competitive game featuring alumni from the 1970s and '80s), added, “So very appreciative of the opportunity to get back on the La Salle court and while the basketball skills are no longer evident, Pilot Pride and the comfort of our brotherhood makes for a very worthwhile afternoon. So very rejuvenating to don the Purple and Gold once more, unite as fellow Pilots and celebrate our common roots."

The tournament had a new wrinkle this year: Because of the increased number of teams, players needed more gym time and more games to be played to get the tournament accomplished in one day.

As a result, the tournament expanded to the Brother Robert Activity Center (the BRAC, as it is affectionately known).

For nearly all of the alumni, this was their first time at the BRAC. Besides setting up the basketball court, Rich Roskopp, facility manager, gladly opened the doors of the newly created TrackMan Golf Simulator for the alumni to see, too.

Jake Jakubek, ‘05, enthusiastically said, “It’s always enjoyable to come back and see familiar and new faces. It’s great to see more recent grads interested in, and participating in, the alumni tournament. The BRAC is a great space for the kids. The addition of that golf simulator is a great add for the school.”

The Class of 2018, featuring Donovan Collins, Jordan Winowiecki, Justin Fischer, Kole Gjonaj, and Luke Pfromm, took home the Joe Novak trophy as this year’s champions. They lost their first game of the tournament, then crushed everyone in the losers’ bracket, got to the finals, and then took care of business.

Pfromm reminisced and said, “It’s always great being back around the guys. We get to compete together again, which is a blast. But, the best part for me is hanging out with the guys who made De La Salle so special for each other.”

After making its long-awaited return in 2021, the De La Salle Collegiate Athletic Hall of Fame will induct another class in the fall of 2022.

Four individuals and a championship-winning team from the school are set to be enshrined as part of the 2022 class, which will be the seventh in school history. The induction ceremony will take place on Saturday, September 17, at 5 p.m., on the Warren-based campus of De La Salle to conclude Hall of Fame weekend.

The Hall of Fame weekend will kick off with an all-school Mass the morning of Friday, September 16. The varsity football game against Birmingham Brother Rice is at 7 p.m. at Wayne State University.

Nominations for individuals and teams are now being accepted by the DLS Athletic Department. To submit an individual or team to the nominating committee, please FILL OUT THE NOMINATION FORM no later than May 1, 2022.

Please be aware that a nomination does not guarantee enshrinement for any individual inductee or team into the 2022 De La Salle Collegiate Athletic Hall of Fame class. All nominations will be under review from the Hall of Fame committee before a final list is selected.

This year’s group of inductees will follow an illustrious 2021 class that featured De La Salle President Emeritus Br. Robert Carnaghi, St. Joe's '48, renowned medical surgeon Dr. Charles Lucas, '55, Catholic League Hall of Famer Vincent Thomas, '96, ex-Michigan football player and three-time Big Ten champion Mark Torzy, '75, Stanley Cup champion Craig Wolanin, '85, and the 2000 state championship baseball team.

The inaugural class was inducted in 2000 and featured the likes of longtime athletic director and school administrator Br. George Synan, Super Bowl champion Chris Godfrey, ‘76, and the 1956 Catholic and city championship football team.

Ragona, Emmons Named Valedictorian and Salutatorian Congratulations to seniors Dominic Ragona, named the Valedictorian for the Class of 2022, and John Emmons, named the Salutatorian.

Dominic Ragona - Valedictorian Dominic plans to major in pre-med; his college choices include Columbia, Northwestern, or the University of Michigan. He is an active student with a full schedule of Advanced Placement classes: Calculus, English, Environmental Science, Computer Science, and Government.

A member of the National Honor Society, Dominic has been captain of the DLS Wrestling team the past three years, and also played varsity football with the 2021 State Championship team.

He attended Carter Middle School (Warren), and chose to follow his older brother Frank, ‘17, to DLS. His favorite high school class was Honors World Contemporary Studies, taught by Mr. Brent Castine, and Dominic cites English teacher Mrs. Jeana Page as his favorite faculty member.

"Even as an underclassman, Dominic showed a great deal of maturity and self-discipline through his level of preparedness and study habits in my class," said Mr. Castine. "It's been exciting to watch him grow over the last several years not just as a student, but as a leader of the De La Salle student body. He holds a great deal of respect from both his peers and the DLS faculty, and this accomplishment couldn't be more deserved!"

Mrs. Page said, "It's no surprise to me that Dominic is valedictorian. He is mature beyond his years, has tremendous self-discipline, and is remarkably diligent and dedicated to his school work. Not only is he an upstanding student, but also a good friend and a supportive classmate to his peers. I am very proud of him."

John Emmons - Salutatiorian Salutatorian John Emmons, who attended Holy Family Regional, is undecided about his next four years. He has a full academic schedule of Advanced Placement courses, including Calculus BC, Environmental Science, American Government, and English, as well as Economics and Philosophy.

John’s favorite class was Mr. Brent Castine’s AP Human Geography course, and his favorite teacher at DLS was Mr. Joe Novak. "A student like John Emmons is a rarity," said Mr. Castine.

"Not often does a young man operate at such a high caliber in both academics and athletics - especially with such a quiet, composed competence. There are no limitations to what he can accomplish, and it will be very exciting to see what the future has in store for him! " Mr. Novak said, "We all know John is a great student by the fact he is salutatorian. But to me what is remarkable about John is how well-rounded of a person he is. He is polite, gets along with all of his peers, and balances his academics and athletics better than anyone I have ever taught. There is no doubt in my mind that he is going to be successful in the future."

John notes he chose to attend DLS ”to further my Catholic education and to take advantage of the academic scholarship I received.”

A four-year varsity lacrosse player at DLS, John has earned Academic All-American, All-State, and All-Catholic honors.

In addition to lacrosse, John also plays travel hockey. He captains the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies, an AAA hockey team ranked 9th in the country; he has been drafted by the Cedar Rapids Rough Riders. He is also a Minot Minotauros Tender.

John lives in Washington Township with his parents John (Sr.) and Jennifer Emmons.

Dominic lives in Warren with his parents Paul and Renee Ragona.

AOD Honors Teachers with Milestone Years

The Archdiocese of Detroit recently honored six De La Salle faculty and staff members for their years of service. The group was honored during halftime of the CHSL A-B Championship football game between De La Salle and University of Detroit-Jesuit on October 23, 2021, at Ford Field in Detroit. Teachers are recognized in five-year increments.

The group includes: Br. Ken Kalinowski, FSC, ‘84 (10 years). Br. Ken is the current principal of DLS, and previously taught at St. Cunegunda in Detroit and at Everest Academy. In addition to teaching overseas in Papua, New Guinea, Br. Ken also taught in Buffalo, Syracuse, the Bronx, Manhattan, and Philadelphia. He returned to DLS in 2016, before taking on the principal position in August 2020.

Jon Hickey (15 years). Hickey is a member of the DLS Counseling Department. He joined the DLS Faculty in 2007.

Joseph Gerardi, ‘86 (20 years). Gerardi joined DLS in 2016.

He is currently Director of Operations (Transportation, Cafeteria, Building, Security, and Information Technology).

He has teaching experience at DLS, Mercy High School, Shrine High School, and University of Detroit Jesuit High School. Gerardi has taught Theology as well as French, and has held various administrative roles.

Elaine Gagnon (40 years). Gagnon joined the DLS faculty in 1989 and is a member of the Math Department. Prior to DLS, Gagnon taught at Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School in Detroit.

Mike Jolly (40 years plus). Jolly has been at DLS since 1974 in various capacities. He served on the coaching staff of various DLS sports for many years, initiated the DLS lacrosse program, and served as Athletic Director. He also taught Psychology. Jolly currently chairs the Veterans’ Wall Committee, and heads the weekly Sportsmen’s Club.

Jolly was the 2018 Christian Brothers’ Dinner Honoree.

Vicki Granger (50 years). Granger joined the DLS faculty in 1982, following service at Bishop Gallagher, Dominican, and Servite (Principal) high schools. Granger headed the DLS English Department, taught AP Language and Composition, and initiated the Journalism class. From 1995-2004, Granger was Director of Academic Affairs. She took on the school website in 2001, and joined the Advancement Department in 2004. For many years, Granger handled all school communications, including the website, social media accounts, parent and alumni newsletters, and the Collegiate magazine, as well as public relations with local media outlets and local grade schools. She continues to work in the Advancement Department, primarily on the Collegiate magazine, as well as writing stories for the school website. Granger was the 2019 Christian Brothers’ Dinner Honoree.

SCHOOL NEWS Dylan attended St. Lawrence Elementary School in Utica, and said he was inspired by family friend Josh Wilk, ‘16, to attend De La Salle. “I have become a lifelong member of a longstanding brotherhood like no other,” he wrote. “This I cherish deeply.”

Faculty member and football coach Mike Shortt, ‘04, who taught Personal Finance to Dylan, had high praise.

“Dylan is an absolute treasure to interact with each day,” Shortt wrote. “He always has a positive attitude, and is an extremely capable student and a great teammate. In football and in class, he’s an outstanding person to have around.”

Senior Dylan Todaro Named Winner of 2022 Balgenorth Scholarship Congratulations to Dylan Todaro, Class of 2022, this year’s recipient of the Richard A. Balgenorth Lasallian Award for Higher Education.

Named for the late Richard Balgenorth, Class of 1975, who passed away suddenly in 2007, the award is given to a graduating senior who displays an understanding of the importance of his De La Salle experience. The award was established during the 2008-2009 school year to perpetually honor Balgenorth, a faithful and proud supporter of the Lasallian mission at De La Salle.

The Balgenorth Award, valued at $1,000, is to be used by a student to defray expenses directly associated with his first year of college.

Dylan has applied to Xavier, the University of Florida, and the

University of Tennessee; he plans to major in Political Science.

Currently, he is taking three Advanced Placement courses: English, Human Geography, and Computer Science.

An active student at De La Salle, Dylan is a member of the National Honor Society, and plans to throw shot put for the DLS track team this spring. He also played varsity football, and was a member of the 2021 state championship team, as well as the 2020 state finalist team.

Dylan tutors other students in English, Spanish, and Social Studies, and has taught students to learn note-taking techniques for quiz and exam preparation.

In his award application essay, Dylan wrote that “Lasallian values have impacted my personal growth. I have become a better person overall.”

Shaun Legato, another faculty member, also speaks highly of Dylan. “I've known Dylan for the past four school years and we have a fantastic relationship,” Legato said. “Even as a freshman, Dylan was above average in regard to maturity, and he has continued to grow into a wonderful young man. I know that I'm proud of what he has become over the years and his parents undoubtedly feel the same. He will be greatly missed in the building next year.”

Kim Balgenorth Honored for Memorial Scholarship On February 25, 2022, Mrs. Kim Balgenorth was presented with a plaque that will be permanently hung in the school recognizing her generosity to De La Salle.

The plaque reads: The Richard Balgenorth Memorial Scholarship was established as a tribute to the memory of Mr. Balgenorth, ‘75, and his belief that De La Salle Collegiate plays a crucial role as a foundation for life-long learning. The Richard Balgenorth Lasallian Award for Higher Education aims to financially assist a graduating De La Salle senior to continue his education at a college or university.

Richard’s spirit carries on today through the generous work of his wife Kim Balgenorth who has served as a counseling assistant, benefactor, and proud supporter of De La Salle since 2008.

While serving as Dads’ Club president, Griffin invited former Pistons Coach Ray Scott to a meeting, as well as former Detroit Tigers’ announcer Mario Impemba.

“Mario was a great speaker for the group.

He brought his dad, and talked for about 30 minutes about growing up in the area and his path to becoming a professional announcer,” Griffin said.

In addition to his son David, who is married and living in Shelby Township, Griffin and his wife Anita, longtime administrative assistant to DLS principals, are the parents of Lisa, a Regina graduate, and the grandparents of two. Larry and Anita live in Sterling Heights.

Congratulations to our own Mr. Larry Griffin, selected for induction into the Macomb County Athletic Hall of Fame.

Griffin, the “Voice of the Pilots” for the past 20 years, will be inducted into the prestigious group during ceremonies on May 25, 2022, at the Mirage Banquet Hall. The 2021 event, when Griffin was originally scheduled to be honored, was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nominated by former Athletic Director Mike Jolly, who serves on the Selection Committee for the Macomb County Athletic Directors Association, Griffin will receive the Dave Jackson Award, presented to individuals who have provided distinguished service as volunteers.

“The designation of ‘Distinguished Service Honoree’ fits Larry Griffin so well,” Jolly said.

“Those so designated are all ‘heart motivated’ and their selection not only makes their community feel proud, but more importantly, it makes them feel good. The honorees’ contributions are selfless and they go so far above and beyond ‘normal’ that they serve as an inspiration for us all.”

DLS Athletic Director Dan Rohn commented, “High school athletics are very special and a major part of the high school experience for the young men who attend De La Salle. Alumni talk about their experiences on the court and football field their entire lives with classmates, family and friends. People like Larry Griffin, and their commitment to our student athletes, school and community, are what

make those experiences memorable and enjoyable for everyone. He has been the voice of the Pilots for over 20 years, and we appreciate his commitment and dedication to our school and community.”

Griffin, who joined the DLS Dads’ Club before his son David, Class of 2006, even started his freshman year, has led that organization as the group’s president and secretary. He continues his involvement with the Dads’ Club to this day, serving as one of the alumni representatives.

Back in 2002, Griffin was announcing CYO games for St. Jude, as well as baseball games for the Harper Woods Little League.

Griffin told Jolly he was interested in filling in, and “the next thing I knew, I was announcing both football and basketball games in the 2003-2004 season.”

Griffin worked in the corporate world before choosing to work with nonprofits, and had experience working in group sales with the Detroit Pistons.

“At the time, the late Mark ‘Doc’ Andrews announced for the Pistons, and I thought he was the best,” Griffin said. “I basically copied his style.”

Griffin has also attended some MHSAA seminars on announcing, and says his “personal thing is don’t screw up the kids’ names!”

A 1975 graduate of Detroit’s Denby High School, Griffin also took some broadcast journalism classes at Wayne State University.

While his children were growing up, Griffin coached Little League for 10 years, and was an umpire for eight.

Griffin voluntarily chose to begin working for charitable organizations. “The corporate world was too cut-throat,” he said. Griffin worked with St. Vincent de Paul (five years), and is currently with Planet Aid as a national customer service manager.

“The DLS parents are great,” Griffin said. “And I appreciate everything DLS has allowed me to do. I feel strongly about volunteering, You've got to give back to the school.”

Griffin noted that his longtime sidekick, Greg Breuckman, an alumni parent, had stepped away from scoreboard duties during COVID. Craig Wilking, ‘89, has been handling the scoreboard duties for football and basketball the last two years.

Jolly also noted Griffin’s professionalism, enthusiasm, and creativity.

“He makes our games first class in all respects - and memorable! Who can forget the first time we heard his WHOOOOOSH! of a low-flying jet following some significant football play? On top of it all, Larry is simply a wonderful human being and family man whose love for De La Salle is the foundation for all of his work. It is so cool for Larry to now join another great DLS man and award recipient, the late Dave Malinowski (2009), in our County Hall of Fame.”

“Some kids get too many in a row wrong, and they just give up, “ Aman said. “The tutor is able to walk them through the problem so that they can see the steps to follow.”

The student and tutor are on headphones and talking to each other, as well as using either a whiteboard, which the student holds up to the screen for the tutor to see their work, or a “jam board” where the tutor writes out the problem so the student can see the step-by-step process.

Aman says the kids are loving it, and even students with better skills are clamoring to be involved with the tutoring process.

The fifth-graders have already shown progress, Aman says. Once the tutoring hour starts, she is freed up to work with small groups in her classroom.

DLS Students Engage in Online Tutoring with 5th Graders For Megan Aman, a fifth-grade teacher at Walton Charter School in Pontiac, meeting her students in person for the first time in nearly two years presented unique challenges.

“My kids had all been learning virtually since March of 2020,” Aman said. “I soon discovered that at least half of my 30 students were way behind in math and reading. They hadn’t finished third grade in person, and were virtual for all of the fourth grade. They hadn’t learned or retained as much as they would have in person. There’s a lot to catch up on.”

“I am so grateful,” Aman said. “This has been an amazing experience. This is life-changing for my students as they feel people are believing in them. They started off nervously, but their confidence and academic skills are growing.”

Westphal said, “The virtual tutoring program is an excellent opportunity for our Pilots to give back to younger students in a safe and efficient manner. With COVID protocols, in-person tutoring is impossible, but online one-on-one is working well. It’s been a great way for students to earn service hours for school and for other requirements. We look forward to building up the program this semester and beyond.”

She considered coming in early, staying after school, and trying to do whatever it takes to get her kids up to grade level. But the task of working with students in small groups with limited time in the school day caused her to think outside the box.

With permission from her principal, Aman, a 2003 Bishop Foley graduate, remembered her high school days of service hours, and decided to reach out to De La Salle for some tutoring helpers.

She connected with Ben Westphal, ‘16, who is handling service for the DLS Campus Ministry Department. He quickly organized tutors to “meet” with the fifth-graders virtually after school using the Google Meet platform.

The DLS students tutor one-on-one with whatever student Aman has slotted for them. She provides a bit of background on the students’ needs: this one needs a little help solving the problem, this one needs a demonstration of the steps. Aman is using an online math program that provides instant feedback.

Generous Alumni Fund Scholarship In 2015, De La Salle Collegiate Alumni Gregory M. DeMars, ‘00, and Dr. Peter Cracchiolo, ‘03, along with Cracchiolo’s younger brothers, Matthew, ‘05, Andrew, ‘07, and Mark, ‘10, established the Peter and Connie Cracchiolo Endowed Scholarship Fund at De La Salle to provide scholarships for qualified De La Salle students.

Speaking to the recipients and their families during a gathering at De La Salle on Friday, October 1, 2021, Dr. Cracchiolo talked about his late grandfather, Peter J. Cracchiolo, who dropped out of school to support his family. Upon his death in 2015, at the age of 98, Dr. Cracchiolo and DeMars decided to establish the fund in his memory.

Students are selected for the faith-based scholarship as a result of their academic achievements and involvement in extracurricular activities.

DECA Team Captures Five Finalist Spots at State Competition Six De La Salle Collegiate students competed in the DECA State Conference Competition held at Huntington Place (formerly TCF Center) in Detroit the weekend of March 11-12, 2022, with five DLS team members earning finalist status.

The finalists include: Seniors Abishek Nirmal-Kumar and Ethan Arun, role play medal and finalists in Entrepreneurship Team Decision Making.

Juniors George Gardey and Calvin Bacall, test medal and finalists in Buying and Merchandising Team Decision Making.

Junior Martino Kas-Mikha, finalist in Principles of Business Management.

Junior Gabe Jones qualified in Principles of Finance, as a result of district competition in January 2022.

DLS Business teacher Mrs. Aarran Meier, the DLS DECA moderator said, “The team of 17 students began preparing for competition in October.

“They have worked hard and have earned more than medals; they have built relationships and connections that will remain now and into the future,” Meier said.

Football, Soccer, Tennis Teams Awarded Academic All-State Honors De La Salle Collegiate’s student-athletes excelled both on and off the playing field and court in the fall of 2021. The varsity football (Div. 2), soccer (Div. 1), and tennis (Div. 2) teams were each recognized as Academic All-State in their respective divisions of competition this past season.

The achievements inside the classroom were honored during a special halftime ceremony during the varsity basketball game against Birmingham Brother Rice at the Bill Fox Gymnasium.

"Much is made of the athletic accomplishments of our student-athletes and rightfully so. However, what many do not realize is how similarly accomplished these young men are inside the classroom,” De La Salle Assistant Principal Chris Dean said. “These students are often enrolled in multiple Honors and/or Advanced Placement classes and are earning Honor Roll status. In addition, they serve the school as officers in Student Council and the National Honor Society, lead as student ambassadors for the Admissions Department, and can often be found at the front of many of our service projects. This ability to successfully manage and balance a wide spectrum of responsibilities is another example of academic excellence being demonstrated daily at De La Salle Collegiate."

In football, the Pilots were the only Michigan high school team to win a state championship and be the No. 1 ranked team in its division academically. The team’s top 11 players – in terms of average grade point average – posted an average GPA of 4.305.

In total, 48 players on the football roster had a GPA over 3.5.

In soccer, the Pilots achieved Academic All-State status by averaging a 3.65 GPA, with 20 of the 23 student-athletes accumulating a GPA of over 3.0. Additionally, seven of the 23

student-athletes amassed a GPA north of 4.0. Furthermore, the average GPA recorded by the team’s 11 seniors was 3.71.

The achievements of the Pilots’ tennis team off the court were equally impressive. Along with winning Academic All-State honors, the varsity tennis program featured three seniors who received the All-State Academic Achievement Senior Player Award: Joe Biernat, Nathan Pryjma, and Anthony Schena.

All the academic accolades made for a fruitful fall sports season at De La Salle.

“As the athletic director, we take great pride in developing our student-athletes both on and off the field,” Athletic Director Dan Rohn said. “We strive for these young men to challenge themselves, as well as their teammates and classmates, on a daily basis. In that manner, we truly are Builders of Boys. Makers of Men. here at De La Salle.”

De La Salle Collegiate features the best of both worlds: high standards and high achievers both academically and athletically. Day in and day out, Pilots students are tested inside the classroom with rigorous academic workloads and then are expected to put forth a high-level degree of effort on the playing field.

It’s all part of the De La Salle experience, where students are prepared for not only excelling athletically at the next level but also – and most importantly – for succeeding academically. The all-boy, college preparatory school never loses sight of the fact that it’s student first, athlete second when it comes to its student-athletes.
