On January 17, 1926, a cornerstone was laid in Detroit, blessed in faith and set with purpose, marking the beginning of De La Salle’s mission.
One hundred years later, that same stone still stands. Moved from Detroit to Warren, it now lives at our current campus, reminding us that while our location has changed, our values and purpose live on.
As we celebrate 100 years of De La Salle Collegiate, this moment connects past to present, honoring a mission that continues into the next century.

Dear Members of the De La Salle Collegiate Community,
As winter gives way to the first signs of spring, it is a fitting time to reflect on the many accomplishments and memorable moments that have shaped the winter months of the 2025–2026 school year at De La Salle Collegiate. Throughout this season, our students have continued to embody the spirit of our Catholic, Lasallian mission—demonstrating excellence in academics, athletics, faith, and service.
In the classroom, our young men continue to rise to new challenges with curiosity and determination. Our faculty remains committed to providing an engaging and rigorous academic experience, and spaces like the Steve & Kathy McShane STEM Innovation Center continue to inspire innovation, collaboration, and hands-on learning. From academic competitions to classroom projects and leadership opportunities, our students are building the skills and confidence needed for the future.
Winter also brought exciting moments across our athletic programs. Our teams represented De La Salle with pride, perseverance, and sportsmanship, continuing a long tradition of competitive excellence. Whether competing on the court, on the ice, or on the mat, our student-athletes demonstrated the discipline and teamwork that define what it means to be a Pilot.
Beyond academics and athletics, this winter was filled with events that strengthened the bonds of our school community. From welcoming prospective students and families to campus for special events like Future Pilot Appreciation Night, to gathering with alumni and friends at community celebrations, these moments remind us that De La Salle is more than a school—it is a brotherhood that spans generations.
As we now look ahead to the final months of the school year and continue preparations for our upcoming centennial celebration, we do so with great gratitude. The successes of this winter season would not be possible without the dedication of our students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and supporters who believe deeply in our mission.
Thank you for being an essential part of the De La Salle community. I look forward to all that the spring season will bring as our Pilots continue to grow, achieve, and lead.

MISSION STATEMENT
De La Salle Collegiate is dedicated to the Lasallian Catholic education of its diverse students, including the poor and disadvantaged. We are a college-preparatory school inspired by the spirit and tradition of St. John Baptist de La Salle, where learning takes place in the presence of God. Each student is encouraged to develop his faith, character, intellect, and morality.

DECA Team Celebrates Record-Breaking District Success, Earns 38 Championships
Congratulations to the De La Salle Collegiate DECA team on an exceptional performance at the January 10, 2026, DECA District Competition, hosted at Anchor Bay High School.
A total of 49 De La Salle students competed across a wide range of business, marketing, finance, and entrepreneurship events—breaking last year’s participation record of 44 students. Of those competitors, an impressive 38 earned District Championship titles, surpassing last year’s record of 26 champions.
Notably, 100% of participating seniors (19 of 19) captured District Championships and advanced to the DECA State Competition March 5-7, along with the other district champions.
DECA Coach Dennis Koch credited the program’s success to strong community and family support.
“Today could not have happened without the tremendous support of Christian Financial Credit Union, as well as the parents who volunteered as chaperones, judges, and event coordinators,” Koch said. Representatives from CFCU regularly assist students with role-play practices, providing valuable real-world insight.
Koch also praised the students’ leadership and commitment, adding, “Finally, a shout-out to our students, including our DECA team leader, senior Evan Kelley.”
Evan competed in Financial Consulting, an Individual Event. In the role-play, he was quizzed on how he would manage financials for a small art business. For this event, he had to prepare a slideshow, and then presented the income, balance, and cash flow statements, and then how to manage the business's growth. The total presentation, and judge questioning, took 15 minutes.
Evan competed in that category in 2025, and won the District Championship, and won the State Championship. At the International competition in Orlando, FL, at the end of April, he didn't make it out of the first round, but had high hopes to become an international champion this year.

• 38 students won District Championship titles, also a program record
• 19 seniors earned championships (100% participation success)
• 19 students placed in the top 3–5 on their online subject area tests
• 20 students placed in the top 3–5 in their role-play events
• 9 students were named State alternates, eligible to advance if needed

HOSA Team Sending 13 to State Conference
The De La Salle Collegiate HOSA chapter delivered an exceptional performance at the HOSA – Future Health Professionals Region 4 Leadership Conference held on Saturday, January 31, with results that reflect months of dedication, preparation, and teamwork.
HOSA – Future Health Professionals is an international student o rganization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education that empowers students interested in healthcare careers to develop leadership skills, technical knowledge, and a commitment to service. Through competitive events, community outreach, and hands-on learning, HOSA prepares students to become compassionate, skilled leaders in the global health community.
Competing against top students from across the region, De La Salle had 13 of its 20 competitors qualify for the HOSA State Conference, scheduled for April in Traverse City, MI, an impressive achievement that highlights the strength of the school’s health sciences and STEM-focused programs.
Several Pilots earned first-place finishes in their respective events:

HOSA events require countless hours of studying, research, and preparation, and the Pilots’ success is a testament to their discipline, teamwork, and passion for the health sciences.

AP Environmental Science Students Planning Pollinator Garden
Recently, four Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science students attended the Teen Conservation Summit held at the Detroit Zoo.
The four seniors - Evan Kelley, Mike Kosanke, Matthew Robinson, and Michael Voronenko - had the opportunity to connect with experts in conservation and sustainability and collaborate with their peers from across Michigan.
The team of four decided to develop a pollinator garden in the 600 wing courtyard.
Staff members from the Detroit Zoo will meet with the students on Zoom to brainstorm ideas, and then work with them to develop their plan.
Evan said the group is looking to build the garden in the Spring of 2026.
The students will then attend another Teen Conservation Summit at the Detroit Zoo on April 18, 2026, and present their work with a panel discussion or a poster presentation.
Science teacher Mrs. Mary Balamucki said, “This project fits in beautifully with the AP Environmental Science curriculum expectations set by the College Board.”
She added, “This is a labor of love. This garden will really bring some beauty and some environmental awareness to our students. It will help them think about these ‘critters’ in a different way.”
DLS Vice Principal for Academics Mrs. Annmarie Michol said, “The AP Environmental Science class is thriving under Mrs. Balamucki who brings creativity and hands'-on learning to every lesson. Through project-based assignments and engaging experiments, students are not only mastering the material but also connecting classroom concepts to real-world environmental challenges. Her approach fosters all of the 21st Century Learning Goals.”
The 21st Century Learning Goals
The 21st Century Learning Goals focus on skills beyond basic content, and emphasize Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration.
“These skills are all things you do in the workplace,” Balamucki said. The College Board Science Practices for Environmental Science are:
• Explain environmental concepts, processes, and models presented in written format.
• Analyze visual representations of environmental concepts and processes
• Analyze sources of information about environmental issues.
• Analyze research studies that test environmental principles.
• Analyze and interpret quantitative data represented in tables, charts and graphs.
• Apply quantitative methods to address environmental concepts.
• Propose and justify solutions to environmental problems.
2026 Balgenorth Scholarship Awarded to Joshua R. Wilson
Congratulations to Joshua R. Wilson, Class of 2026, this year’s recipient of the Richard A. Balgenorth Lasallian Award for Higher Education.
Named for the late Richard Balgenorth, Class of 1975, who passed away suddenly in 2007, the award is presented to a graduating senior who displays an understanding of the importance of his De La Salle experience. The award was established during the 2008-2009 school year to perpetually honor Balgenorth, a faithful and proud supporter of the Lasallian mission at De La Salle.
Richard’s spirit carries on today through the generous work of his wife, Kim Balgenorth, who has been a proud supporter of De La Salle; she was the DLS Counseling Department assistant from 2008 until her retirement in June 2023.
The Balgenorth Award, valued at $1,000, is to be used by a student to defray expenses directly associated with his first year of college.
Joshua plans to pursue a career in veterinary medicine and has applied to several universities which have a Pre-veterinary track.
He particularly wanted to apply for the scholarship when he learned how “Mr. Balgenorth noted that De La Salle supports not only a college career, but a whole life of hard work, values, and faith.”
In his application essay, Joshua wrote:
“When my parents announced I would attend De La Salle, I was uncertain about my future. Now as a senior reaching for the finish line, I cannot wait to share the same news with my son some day. De La Salle, simply put, has transformed my life.”
Joshua went on to describe wanting to transfer at the end of his freshman year, but that “thankfully, my parents’ decision stood firm, and I gave De La Salle a real chance this time.”
He also wrote, “This unique environment provided me with discipline and a true brotherhood, and as I go into different communities, I will make sure to always remember and keep in touch with my roots at De La Salle.”
After learning about St. John Baptist de La Salle, and how he welcomed students to a faith-based learning environment, Joshua noted, “I have met people of all ethnicities and social classes through De La Salle, and we all have access to the same opportunities. Lasallian teaching has given me a great advantage over others, and I have learned it is important to view things from different perspectives.”
He concluded his essay with these words:
“If it was not for De La Salle, I do not know where I would be. I do know it has provided me with the framework for the rest of my life. I will make sure to find a supportive community that resembles De La Salle, and I will also stay involved in the De La Salle community. I will continue to use the work habits, discipline, and time management I learned at De La Salle, as it will support me in becoming the s trongest version of myself I can be.”

Wagner Named National Merit Commended Student
Zackary Wagner is ranked among the top students in the De La Salle Collegiate Class of 2026. He was recently recognized as a Commended Student in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Competition.
Due to his strong academic abilities, Zack has several Advanced Placement (AP) courses on his transcript, including AP Spanish 4 which he took as a junior.
As a freshman, Zack was in Mr. Wilson Juncaj’s Spanish 1 class, and Juncaj recognized Zack’s aptitude for the language. Zack jumped to Spanish 3 as a sophomore, and earned top grades there as well.
He has AP credits in AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC, and is taking AP Statistics this year.
His AP credits in Science include Chemistry and Physics, and he has taken both English Language and Composition and is currently in AP Literature and Composition.
His senior year schedule also includes a Personal Finance class and Art. He took Introduction to Engineering Design and Principles of Engineering before his senior year.
But Zack is not only a standout student in the classroom.
He is one of the captains of the DLS Varsity Football team.
Zack said one of his best memories of high school will be Kairos because it is a "life-changing experience." He also says he will "treasure the many friendships I made in high school."
As a result of his athletic AND academic abilities, Zack has committed to Central Michigan University, where he plans to major in either Engineering or Finance.
“Both engineering and finance attract me due to their emphasis on real-world problem-solving and use of mathematical skills,” Zack said. “I’m drawn to the logical thinking that comes along with engineering, along with the analytical aspect of finance.”
In addition to being a skilled football player, Zack also plays varsity baseball. Coach Dan Cimini says, “Zack is a great football player and an even better baseball player. He could play both in college.”
Cimini added, “Zack Wagner is one of those student/athletes that
comes around once in a decade. He has been a fantastic role model to his teammates and classmates since his freshman year and does everything the 'right way.' Zack leads by example both on the field and in the classroom.”
Zack is also involved with the DLS DECA team. During the 2024-2025 school year, he was a District Champion and a State Finalist in the Hospitality and Tourism category with his partner, Brady Lee.
DLS DECA Moderator Dennis Koch, ‘94, said, “Last year Zack really made an impressive start in DECA. As a first-year member, earning a spot at States speaks volumes about his dedication and drive. He consistently put in the time and effort to learn, improve, and represent our team.”
Zack is also a member of the National Honor Society.
Zack chose to attend De La Salle for several reasons.
“The strong emphasis on brotherhood, the relationships built here along with the core principles of faith and integrity stood out to me,” Zack said. “The support system of teachers, coaches, and peers is like no other. The sense of community ultimately convinced me it was the right place to build my foundation for success in life.”
Zack advises freshmen to “focus on exploring different interests, building connections with new people, and developing good study habits from the start. Getting involved is crucial, and surrounding yourself with people who support you in achieving your goals is even more important.”
Math teacher Joe Novak, ‘03, said, “Zack is one of the quiet leaders of this school. Students not only look up to him because of his athletic ability but because of everything else too. He is at the top of the class in GPA- he took a 10th/11th grade Advanced Pre Calc class his Freshman year. He is kind to peers and very humble when it comes to any of his successes. Just a great overall, well rounded young man. He is a wonderful model for our entire student body.”
Theology teacher John Berlin also has high praise. “It truly has been a pleasure to have him in class. I always think of ‘pursuit of completeness' when I think of Zack Wagner. Here is a young man who seeks mastery of all academic disciplines (a joy for learning) and master of all techniques while growing his spirit along the way.”
Berlin adds, “Zack is the ‘total package.’ Punctual, prepared, attentive and positively engaging each and every day. Zack embraces all things great at De La Salle. He is everything a student should be. He truly is intrinsically motivated to maximize his De La Salle experience, knowing that the more he takes out of his Collegiate experience, the better prepared he is for university rigor. He always shows interest, respect, and support to all his fellow Pilots no matter where he may be. He is everything a student should be.”
Zack lives in Washington Township and attended Holy Family Regional. His home parish is Ss. John and Paul in Washington Township. His parents are Tim and Holly. Zack's younger brother Luke is currently a DLS sophomore.
DLS Named to Advanced Placement Honor Roll
De La Salle Collegiate has been named to the 2024-2025 Advanced Placement (AP) School Honor Roll which recognizes schools that have done outstanding work to welcome more students into AP courses and support them on the path to college success.
In May 2025, 164 DLS students took 302 exams in 16 subject areas.
The scores on those tests, a 1 - 5 range, with 5 being the highest possible score, showed improvement over the 2024 testing.
Research hows that students who take AP courses and exams are more likely to attend college and graduate on time. The students who enter four-year colleges with credit from AP accelerate their path to graduation and build confidence for college success.
And even for those who don’t earn college credit, AP coursework provides early exposure to college-level work and contributes to a college-going school culture.
Principal Chris Dean provided additional information about the AP Honor Roll criteria, and its three levels of recognition.
College Culture: Determined by the percent of students in the graduating class who took an AP exam at any point in high school, regardless of score. DLS earned a Silver rating.
College Credit: Determined by the percent of students in the graduating class who scored 3+ on any AP Exam in high school. DLS earned a Gold rating.
College Optimization: Determined by percent of students in the graduating class who took 5 or more AP Exams in high school. DLS earned a Gold rating.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Art Students Team With HOSA for Charitable Effort
During January 2026, students in Mrs. Stacey Stasinski’s art classes at De La Salle Collegiate put their creativity to work for a meaningful cause, creating inspirational and motivational cards for patients at Children’s Hospital of Michigan. Filled with encouraging words and original artwork, the cards are designed to bring comfort and brighten the days of children receiving care.
The completed cards will be delivered by members of the HOSA chapter at De La Salle, sponsored by science teacher Mrs. Mary Balamucki. With many students participating in both art classes and HOSA, the collaboration came together naturally—uniting creativity and compassion in service to others. Students embraced the opportunity, knowing their messages of hope would make a real difference for young patients.
HOSA’s mission is to empower future health care professionals to become leaders in the global health community, and this project reflects that commitment to service and empathy.
This partnership builds on HOSA’s continued outreach efforts at De La Salle. In December 2025, HOSA teamed up with the DLS Student Council to raise $4,200 for the Snowpile Project at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, providing holiday gifts not only for patients, but for their siblings as well.
Student Council, HOSA Team for Toy Donations to Local Hospitals
During December 2025, a joint project of the DLS Student Council and the HOSA Club generated $8,400 to purchase gifts for children at two local hospitals.
The Student Council raised the funds through a variety of dress down days, and split the funds with HOSA.
The Student Council delivered their gifts to children at Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor; the HOSA students delivered gifts to Children’s Hospital of Detroit.
Faculty member Mrs. Mary Balamucki, the HOSA Club Advisor, said, “This was a beautiful reminder of the true spirit of the season at De La Salle Collegiate. What began as an idea became a powerful reminder of what it means to serve others with heart and purpose."
She added, "The leadership, teamwork, and care shown by our students reflects the very best of the De La Salle community. We are grateful for the opportunity to give back and look forward to working alongside the Student Council next year to make this tradition even better.”
Pilot Musicians Perform at Albion College Band Day
Several De La Salle Collegiate Marching Band students, along with DLS Music Teacher Robert Cornwell, ‘19, recently traveled to Albion College to participate in the college’s Band Day on Saturday, November 1. This was the second year that DLS participated in the event.
The DLS group included a sophomore from Regina; the band has 11 boys and 3 girls from Regina.
Cornwell, a 2023 Albion graduate, was active with the Music Program at Albion.
He and the students rehearsed briefly with the Albion band, and after lunch and changing into uniforms, marched, along with about 10 other high schools, with the Albion Briton Brigade Marching Band.
All the bands played with the college band for its pregame performance, including the National Anthem, and then performed Sweet Home Alabama and California Girls alongside the Band during halftime.
Cornwell also played tenor sax with the Marching Band on the field and in the stands during the game.
“The Band Day experience is truly invaluable,” Cornwell said. “Our students had the opportunity to work with multiple college professors, meet new people, and share their love of performing. It also gave them a firsthand look at collegiate-level ensembles and helped them further develop their musical skills.”
Cornwell added,”In De La Salle’s music program, I had many incredible opportunities, and I am blessed to now be in a position where I can offer those same experiences to my own students.
“Being able to work with the two programs that helped shape me into the musician and educator I am today is incredibly meaningful. The experience was made even more special because our students had the chance to meet my college band director and the mentor teacher with whom I completed my student teaching. I felt very proud to show them the journey that brought me from those formative experiences to where I am now.”
DECA Speaker Series Kicks Off With Alumnus Gene Bitonti, ‘93
In an effort to help DECA team members and business students learn from successful alumni, the De La Salle Collegiate DECA Club has created a monthly speaker series featuring successful alumni.
Gene Bitonti, ‘93, kicked off the new program, sharing his knowledge about his career as an investment banker.
Faculty member Dennis Koch, ‘94, has known Bitonti since their days as grade-schoolers at St. Anne’s (Warren).
“Gene was fantastic,” Koch said. “He connected really well with the students, kept their interest, and since he is a current dad, that made him even more impactful.”
Bitonti is the father of current senior Anthony and junior Vince.
Koch said that Bitonti shared a great line during his talk: “Don't be afraid to trade 'good' for a chance to be great, and once you’re at great, you can push yourself to become exceptional.”
Bitonti is the Managing Director and Founding Partner of Woodward Park Partners. He has over 25 years of investment banking experience across multiple industrial and commercial markets.
He earned his Bachelor’s in Finance and Accounting from Michigan State University, as well as his Master’s in Business Administration from the MSU Eli Broad College of Business.
Bitonti shared his “lessons learned” during his talk and during the question-and-answer session.
“Pursue a degree that will be useful. The people are as important as the work. And there is a difference between a calculated risk and being reckless.”
He later said, “I really enjoyed the opportunity to speak to the DECA group. They were all very attentive, so hopefully they learned a little something.”
The monthly speaker series, “Pilot Perspectives,” will feature alumni from various industries, depending on the speakers’ availability. Koch plans to invite alumni professionals from the medical/health care fields, engineering and technology, finance/accounting, and more.
With dozens of alumni as members in the four alumni professional associations - Pilot Bar Association, Pilot Medical Association, Pilot Business Association, and Pilot Construction Association - as well as alumni contacts from his many years in the classroom and as the Director of Alumni Relations for a few years, Koch has no shortage of speakers for this program.

Real World Pilot
Tony Montana, ‘11, Visits Aviation Science Class
The students in the DLS Aviation Science class recently heard from DLS Alumnus Anthony “Tony” Montana, Class of 2011.
A pilot now with Delta Airlines, Montana served as a guest instructor in Mr. Greg Hoskins’ class for two days in early November, talking about cross-country flight planning
“Tony was a great student, and we have kept in touch,” Hoskins said. “His piloting experience really made an impact on the class as he discussed the real world of planning flights.”
Montana also spoke about aviation careers and career progression. The one-semester Aviation Science course is new to the DLS curriculum and available to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
The course has five units, each four weeks long, and the Navigation and Communication portion is the third unit. The other units are Fundamentals of Aviation, Airspace and Regulations, Human Factors and Safety, and Career Paths in Specialization.
Hoskins, a veteran science teacher, has developed the aviation units using a variety of resources, along with STEM Coordinator Mr. Scott Husken. Hoskins felt that Montana would bring a great perspective to the class.
Montana explained how to build a flight plan and run the calculations associated with the plan.
“It was a wonderful experience,” Montana said. “The boys seemed very interested. As a guy who spends his life flying, seeing the passion and excitement from the boys definitely rejuvenated my passion for the field.”
He began his piloting career in 2015 and flew with various airlines before joining Delta in 2023.
Growing up, Montana had a passion for model airplane building, and also constructed remote control models.
He attended St. Lawrence Grade School in Utica, and decided to attend DLS because of a DLS family in his neighborhood. “The dad had good things to say about De La Salle,” Montana recalled. “When I attended the DLS Open House house with my parents, we all liked the school.”
Montana was an active student at De La Salle, and a member of the school’s Link Crew. He was also a Boy Scout and earned the Eagle Scout recognition, and a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He studied in the flight program at Western Michigan University.
Montana volunteers a lot with high schools and colleges, as part of the education program of the Airline Pilots Association.
He lives in Macomb Township, and is a first officer Pilot for Delta, typically flying a domestic route from Detroit to Charlotte (NC), St. Louis, and Minneapolis. “My schedule and route depends on demand,” Montana said. He may fly four-five days a week.
He also enjoys the perks of the job, and has traveled to Hawaii. “There are a lot of family benefits.”
A Joyful Profession of Faith at De La Salle Collegiate
Recently at De La Salle Collegiate, at a Wednesday morning Mass, freshman Michael Chris Daher publicly made his Profession of Faith and was received into the Roman Catholic Church.
Fr. Joe Gembala, chaplain of De La Salle Collegiate and pastor of St. Malachy Parish, made the moment especially meaningful within the life of the school.
For Chris, this step was the natural expression of a faith he has long felt called to embrace.
“I have always felt welcomed in the Catholic Church,” he said. “I believe that Jesus is the true God and true Man who died for me and rose from the dead. I put my hope and trust in Him and rely on His forgiveness.” His words reflect both conviction and gratitude, underscoring a faith rooted in trust, mercy, and hope.
Chris currently worships at St. Clare of Montefalco, where Fr. Andrew Kowalczyk, CSMA, serves as his pastor. Chris spoke warmly of Fr. Andrew’s guidance and care, particularly during a unique and challenging period when Chris spent two months in China and was unable to attend Mass in person.
“I called Fr. Andrew, and he supported me long distance with spiritual comfort and prayer,” Chris said—an example of how pastoral support and faith transcend borders.
At De La Salle Collegiate, Chris has found a community that nurtures both faith and character.
“I appreciate the support of my fellow students,” he explained. “De La Salle Brotherhood makes me feel welcome and helps me be virtuous—and it is fun.” His experience reflects the school’s Lasallian mission: forming young men in faith, service, and community.
Chris’s Profession of Faith is a powerful reminder of the role De La Salle plays in accompanying students on their spiritual journeys.
Today, the De La Salle community celebrates Chris’s commitment to the Catholic faith and rejoices with him as he continues to grow as a young man of faith, integrity, and brotherhood.
DLS Welcomes Wendy Cummins to Board of Trustees
De La Salle Collegiate is pleased to announce the appointment of Wendy Cummins to its Board of Trustees, adding a respected educator and longtime school community leader to its governing body.
Cummins holds a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Saginaw Valley State University and is a certified teacher in the State of Michigan. Cummins also brings more than two decades of experience in education, having served as a teacher with Birmingham Public Schools from 1999 to 2024. Her excellence in the classroom was recognized when she was named Birmingham Public Schools Middle School Teacher of the Year in 2024 and an Oakland County Teacher of the Year nominee in 2015.
In addition to her professional career, Cummins has deep and meaningful ties to De La Salle Collegiate. She and her husband, Patrick, '88— a De La Salle alumnus — are the proud parents of two DLS graduates, Drew, ‘19, and Cody, ‘23. Her volunteer leadership includes service as Vice President of the Christian Brothers Auxiliary, the De La Salle Collegiate mothers’ club.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Wendy Cummins as a new member of our Board of Trustees,” said Board Chair Ben Aloia, '91. “We are grateful for her willingness to serve and look forward to the leadership, insight, and perspective she will bring to the Board.”

Ross MacDonald. January 13, 2026. MacDonald won 63 football games in his tenure with the Pilots, including a memorable upset over the heavily-favored Detroit Cass Tech Technicians during the 1994 state playoffs.
MacDonald garnered a variety of accolades during his coaching career, including Catholic League Coach of the Year honors in 1994. Additionally, he was inducted into multiple Hall of Fames: the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1995, the Macomb County Coaches Hall of Fame in 2001, and the Michigan High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2013.
Longtime DLS faculty and staff member Mike Szatkowski, ‘73, an assistant on MacDonald’s staff, remembers the former Pilot head man fondly for the way he carried himself both on and off the field.
“Ross absolutely forbade swearing by either his coaches or his players,” Szatkowski said. “To him swearing was evidence of ‘a weak mind struggling to express itself.’ If that’s not a direct quote, it’s pretty darn close, and I’ll always remember him saying that, especially when I find myself using gutter language.”
Mike Jolly, who served as DLS athletic director during MacDonald’s stint with the Pilots, also offered high remarks for the Hall of Fame coach.
“I found him to be a good man and a good football coach – an educator and a professional,” Jolly expressed. “I recall that his teams won the games that they were expected to win, rarely were upset, and often won games for which the ‘experts’ felt we had no chance. He had a profound impact on the young men he coached.”
De La Salle extends its deepest condolences to the MacDonald family during this time.
Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

TYPES OF GIFTS
The Lasallian Fund is our annual fundraising initiative that provides the school with operating funds, as wll as filling the gap between what tuition covers and what it actually costs us to educate our young men.
A Lasallian Fund Restricted Gift can be directed by you, the donor, ti support any area of the school. Your gift can be directed to an Athletic Team, Club, of Activity, or to a Department, to the Recycling Program, or to anything that you would like to assist with a donation.
Scholarships
Scholarship funding directly provides financial aid to qualified De La Salle fmailies. Any amount is greatly accepted, and all donations go to students who need it. Contact the Advancement Office for more information. OPportunities also exist to sponsor a student with a full or half-year tuition called the Co-Pilot Sponsorship.
Endowment Funds
Endowment scholarship funds at De La Salle are those with a minimum of $25,000 which is invested and the interest is used for tuition assistance. For more information on setting up an Endowed Scholarship, contact the Advancement Office.
Planned Gifts
You can personally impact future generations of Pilots by naming De La Salle in your will. Those involved in planned giving are inducted into the Br. George Synan Society. For more information, contact the Advancement Office.

It is named the Lasallian Fund to reflect that we are a Lasallian school, and follow the Mission of our founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle, who instructed us to educate all students, regardless of their financial capability. To be true to that Mission, we keep our tuition as low as possible, actually charging less than it truly costs to educate each student. The DLS Alumni Association is now a tiered system designed to fit the needs and the means of our alumni. Paid alumni dues are used to offset the costs of alumni events.
Young Alumni: $19.26
Designed specifically for graduates within the last 10 years. Young Alumni members have access to the 1926 Society Annual Meeting.
Christian Brothers Supporter: $100.00
Designed for those who graduated more than 10 years ago. Members will receive annual access to the Pilot Bar, Business, and Medical Associations, as well as invitations to future DLS Alumni Association events.
St. La Salle Lifetime Member: $250.00
Lifetime Members will receive a lifetime admission pass to all DLS home athletic events, access to the Pilot Bar, Business, Construction, and Medical Associations, and invitations to future lifetime membership events and special promotions. As a token of our appreciation, each Lifetime Member will receive a De La Salle pennant, and a sleeve of De La Salle golf balls.
