On The Cover In mid-March, eighth-graders accepted to De La Salle Collegiate began the registration process for the 2017-2018 school year. These young men, from dozens of different grade schools, will join together as the Class of 2021. The DLS Admissions Department has been identifying each of these young men in Facebook posts, with the student’s photo, grade school, and interests. These same pictures and info are also being tweeted, with the hashtag #CollegiateCommitted. From The President Dear De La Salle Collegiate Family, You probably have heard the saying that “things often happen in threes.”

Well recently things have been happening all around the De La Salle Collegiate community in multiples of three! Take for instance one recent weekend. Our Swim team took fifth in the state. At the same time, 21 students competed in downtown Detroit at the DECA State Development Conference, and 12 of our 21 student participants medaled. Not to be outdone, our Power Lifters had a tremendous showing in the state finals and our Concert Band had a successful performance in their competition. Oh, and did I mention that our Basketball team won the District Championship? And school history was made by our Hockey team when they defeated Calumet for the Division 3 State Championship.

In the midst of the celebrations, we received word that three of our seniors have received Congressional appointments to our military academies, and one of our seniors achieved the highest score for a DLS student in the state Mathematics competition. All of these achievements are reasons for us to feel blessed when we think about our school and about our students. Catholic, Lasallian education is alive and flourishing in metropolitan Detroit!

In addition to all of the wonderful achievements noted above, our community welcomed the Class of 2021 during our two nights of freshman registration. Our cover proudly presents the faces of some of the many young men who have said yes to DLS. As with any incoming class of students, we know something about each young man, but what we don’t know yet and will not know for some time, is just what the Lord has planned for them during their four years with us. Perhaps somewhere among the class of 2021 is a future star on the stage, or a future Christian Brother, or an outstanding scientist. One of the many blessings of working with young people is the joy and excitement that one experiences as a young person unwraps his gifts and talents and begins to let himself be led by God. At one time many years ago Michael Brillati was just like the members of the Class of 2021. Michael entered our school in the fall of 1989 filled with anticipation for what the next four years at DLS would hold for him.

The years since those early days with us have brought Michael many blessings and many challenges. Today we are preparing to celebrate Michael’s contributions to our Christian Brothers’ Dinner and to our school by awarding him with the Christian Brothers’ Dinner Award. Michael and the Brillati family have given so much to DLS over the years. Yet I know that they would be the first to tell you that our school and the Brothers and their lay colleagues have given them so much more. Congratulations, Michael, on receiving this recognition!

In closing I want to thank you, our loyal alumni and friends, for your continued support of our Catholic, Lasallian mission. We pray for you and your loved ones each morning and afternoon during the school day.

Without you, your prayers and your support, the many successes mentioned above would not be possible.

The Thirty Sixth Annual Michael Brillati ‘93 named 2017 Honoree The 2017 Christian Brothers’ Dinner Committee is pleased to announce the selection of Michael A. Brillati, ’93, as this year’s Dinner Honoree.

1993-2000. It is the second instance that both a father and son have been named Honoree, with John Addy, Jr. ‘34 (1983) and his son Jim Addy ‘63 (2003) being the first two-generation family.

“He is a most deserving Honoree,” says President John M. Knight, “and it is our privilege to recognize his many contributions to his alma mater.”

Michael served as the Chairman of the Dinner from 2007-2016, leading the event which welcomes more than 950 alumni and friends to celebrate and support the Christian Brothers’ mission at De La Salle Collegiate. During that time period, the Dinner’s revenue has steadily increased from approximately $135,000 to more than $230,000 in 2016.

“Michael has uniquely impacted De La Salle by dedicating his leadership and resources to the Christian Brothers’ Dinner,” said Chris Czarnik, Director of Advancement. “The benefit of the event goes far beyond the very ample funds raised that evening to support students. It reinforces the meaningful brand of De La Salle and strengthens relationships that lead to strong enrollment and future service and contributions.”

In becoming the 36th Honoree, Mike joins his father, Leonard, the 2001 Honoree, in earning the distinction. Leonard also served as Chairperson of the Dinner from

“My connection to De La Salle is all about family,” says Mike. “My dad was a past Chairperson of the Dinner, and my brothers Paul and Steven have been very active and supportive of the school as well. I think we all recognized how our dad valued his children being educated at De La Salle, and know the difference it has made in our lives.

I enjoy the idea that in some way we might help make that possible for other families.”

“Mike understands our Mission,” says President Emeritus Brother Bob Carnaghi, who taught Michael as a student. “He jokes about not being one of the top guys in his class, but he’s proven that hard work makes all the difference. He uses his success to bless others. I’m so proud of Mike and the whole Brillati family.”

After graduation, Mike attended the University of Detroit Mercy and met his wife Julie there.

Skowronski, Mike began a career in the insurance industry and opened his own firm, Salus Group, in 2005. He specializes in employee benefit plans and the company has grown to serve clients in multiple states.

“De La Salle is responsible on so many levels for my success,” says Mike. “The people I’ve met through the school have become my closest friends. The Dinner reflects that environment. It’s fun because it’s really about men coming together to celebrate friendships and support a school that is nothing short of vital to Catholic education and our Detroit community.”

Dinner Chairperson Mike Wasik says he is happy to see Mike enjoy the award. “Mike is so deserving,” Wasik says. “Serving on the Committee with him in

previous years, we have had a lot of fun, but Mike kept us focused on doing good things for DLS students in need.”

This year’s Dinner is May 4th.

In addition to De La Salle and St. Joe’s alumni and friends, graduates of schools such as Harper Woods Notre Dame, Bishop Gallagher, and Austin also join in to make it a celebration of Eastside Catholic education.

“St. John Baptist de La Salle’s mission was to educate the poor,” says Mike. “That has made an impact on my life that if we are successful in life, we need to give back to those less fortunate. Guys from those schools were brought up the same way, and we are really all part of one family.

Conversation With...

Brother Ken Kalinowski, Class of ‘84 Brother Ken Kalinowski, ‘84, joined the DLS Religion Department this semester, after teaching the last few years at Papua, New Guinea.

You were halfway around the world the last few years? What was your teaching assignment in Papua, New Guinea?

I was the Vice Principal for Academics. I taught 10th grade Mathematics as well, and was the local Vocation Director at the school.

You had a special relationship with the late Brother George Synan. How was he influential in your life?

I attended St. Augustine’s Grade School, near McNichols and Davison, the grandchild of Polish immigrants. My mother had two jobs, including working at the rectory. She wanted me to attend De La Salle, which was then located in Detroit, across from City Airport.

Making tuition payments was a struggle. After my sophomore year, DLS moved to Warren, and I remember getting a letter from Brother Kevin Gilhooly, asking “Are you coming with us?” I didn’t know if I could make the tuition payments. I got a job at Buddy’s Pizza, on Six Mile, and every two weeks, I’d bring my paycheck to school and go to the office and turn it in. It was a very tough time.

Toward the end of the year, Brother George came to me and said that a generous alumnus had made a large donation, and that this money would be used to cover my tuition senior year. It was such a huge relief to me and my mother. It was as if a huge burden had been lifted off my back.

Brother George was such a kind man. Those of us who knew him remember how he always knew your name; if your father was an alumnus, he remembered his name.

Did you ever find out the identity of your generous benefactor?

No. But it’s people like that man 35 years ago that made such a difference in my life, and others like him

that continue to support Lasallian education whether it’s in Papua, New Guinea, or right here in Warren.

You’ve returned to Detroit and family for the first time in many years. What’s it like for you as an alumnus to be teaching at your alma mater?

Surreal and humbling. It is truly amazing to still have teachers like Mr. Michael Szatkowski, Mr. Gary Buslepp, and Mrs. Vicki Granger here, showing their zeal and dedication. And long time teachers who continue to inspire, such as Mr. Thaier Mukhtar, Mr. Mike Jolly, and Ms. Elaine Gagnon. The Lasallian spirit is endorsed by the faculty who show daily the face of Christ to their students. De La Salle is a great place and with our administration dedicated to the Lasallian Mission, I have faith that we will be true to our Founder for decades to come.

As St. La Salle writes to the early Brothers, “The need for this Institute is great.” I truly believe that De La Salle Collegiate is needed in Metro Detroit more than ever today.

We pray in thanksgiving for the generosity of our benefactors and loyal alumni who help us continue this Mission!

Making a Difference Alumnus Coaches Special Olympics Team Greg Mazurkiewicz, Class of 1968, is still involved in basketball nearly 50 years after graduation.

After stints as a grade school and high school coach, nowadays, the benchman coaches a special needs basketball team in St. Clair Shores.

The recent retiree and his wife Margaret started the program 11 years ago, and for the last ten years, the team has competed through Special Olympics Michigan. www.somi.org Greg’s son Stephen is autistic, and Greg and Margaret first got Stephen involved in the the St. Clair Shores special needs softball program which began in 1999. The teams played in a local Eastside league, with coaches pitching and all players in the field.

A few years later, one of the special needs parents asked about starting a basketball program. Greg was interested.

“Basketball is my favorite sport. In high school I was a tall player, but was not a ‘big’ player on the team. We had a seven-man rotation that played every game in ‘68, and I was one of the players that came off the bench. The star of the team was Frank Merrick, who was later inducted into the De La Salle Hall of Fame.”

They set up an opportunity for the Special Olympics team to practice with the Pilots, and attend a game.

They did it again this season.

With Margaret’s help, the special needs team found gym time. Greg became certified as a coach through Special Olympics. “The parents are usually the coaches, and they are trained in the fundamentals of basketball and what to teach during practices.

More importantly, they learn the rules and proper conduct for working with special needs kids, particularly disciplining appropriately.”

Greg’s son lives at home, and is involved in various activities throughout the community. “In Michigan, special needs education is available until age 26.

Stephen currently attends a workshop, and he enjoys bowling through a special needs program in St. Clair Shores.”

Greg’s team has a 14-man roster, aged teen through mid-30’s. On March 4, the team won its third straight regional championship.

His De La Salle education has helped Greg with Stephen. “My Christian Brothers DLS education helped me with having a special needs son. It was a big adjustment. You have to adjust your outlook and attitude.”

A couple of years ago, Greg contacted Greg Esler, DLS Varsity Basketball Coach who also runs the

Greg’s daughter Becky, now 35, is a doctor in New York City.

Whatever Happened To...

Mike Karas DLS Faculty and Staff 1981 - 2014 As a DLS Faculty and Staff member, Mike Karas wore many hats. He taught in both the English and Social Studies Department, chaired Social Studies for several years, served as Athletic Director for a brief time, and was first Director of Development (now the Advancement Department).

At the same time, Mike was also teaching English, and serving as Athletic Director.

Alumni Spotlight Monsignor Chuck Kosanke, Class of 1977 As a high school junior, Chuck Kosanke was the assistant editor of the yearbook, and looking forward to senior year. He would become editor - an important role in his Class of 1977.

But Brother Malachy Biller, Yearbook Moderator, noticed that Chuck was often tired, and pulled him aside and said “What’s going on? You’re always sleepy.”

Chuck had an easy answer, “Well, I’ve got school and studying, and yearbook. And I do a lot at St. Raymond.

“Brother Mal told me I had to make a choice. He said the yearbook is important and we want to have a quality product. He gave me a week to decide. I came back and said I enjoyed being involved at St. Raymond a lot more. I was training the altar servers. I was

on the Worship Commission and was the youth rep on the Parish Council.”

As a senior, Chuck faced another dilemma. He liked his business classes with Mr. John Schmid.

Chuck was thinking about attending Western Michigan University to study accounting and business law. But he also thought about attending Sacred Heart seminary - a thought he had had since seventh grade. So, he decided to give the seminary a year, to test it out. And the first year of seminary led to a second, and a third, and finally to ordination.

Full Circle

Now, as a parish priest, Chuck has come full circle - he is assigned to both Ste. Anne and Most Holy Trinity parishes in Detroit - two poor parishes. And his accounting

and business knowledge are put to work as he seeks funding for the various programs operated by both.

And even more full circle is Chuck’s role at Most Holy Trinity, where he served while a seminarian with the legendary Msgr.

Clement Kern. Kern died in 1983 while Chuck was still in the seminary, but Kern’s sister gave Chuck Kern’s clerical collar after his death. Chuck wore that collar for his 1985 ordination.

Chuck returned to Sacred Heart Seminary in 1992, after his first parish assignment at Shrine of the Little Flower, in Royal Oak, and after completing a doctorate in Biblical Studies in Rome.

While on the Seminary faculty, he also served as Pastor at three inner-city parishes - St. Benedict, St. Cecilia, and Church of the Madonna.

In 2002, he became Pastor of Guardian Angels in Clawson, and President of Bishop Foley High School. During his time at Guardian Angels, he was named a Monsignor by Pope Benedict in 2005.

But a “simple” parish life was not in the cards. Cardinal Maida appointed Msgr. Chuck as Rector of Saints Cyril and Methodius Seminary (the National Polish Seminary), in Orchard Lake, MI, in 2005, a post he held for six years. During this time,

Chuck led the process to have the seminary reaccredited with the Association of Theological Schools.

In 2011 Msgr. Chuck was appointed Pastor of St. Regis Parish in Bloomfield Hills, MI, where he reduced the debt, restored the church, strengthened the school, and built a chapel. Perhaps more significant was his work as the first Chairman of Catholic Charities of Southeastern Michigan. He led the restructuring of six county Catholic social services into one regional entity.

And then came the call from Archbishop Allen Vigneron in April 2016 to take on Ste. Anne’s and Holy Trinity.

God’s sense of humor

“I was surprised,” says Chuck. “I wasn’t looking for a move. I was perfectly happy where I was. We had just finished a major project, and were starting plans for another. I got the call on Good Friday that the pastor at Ste.

Anne’s, Msgr. Russ Kohler, had died.

The Wednesday after Easter, the Archbishop called and wanted to see me. He said I would like you to become the new pastor of Ste. Anne and Holy Trinity. I was in shock. He said you’re the one I think can do the job. I’ve prayed about this.

I’ve consulted with the other bishops, and your name came up every time. I believe you’re the one to do this.

“The Archbishop went on to explain the importance of both parishes in the civic life of Detroit, and that their legacy needs to continue. He needed me to reach out to the young people who are moving into Midtown and Corktown.”

From April 25 to June 30, 2016, two months, Chuck administered all three parishes - St. Regis, Ste. Anne’s and Holy Trinity, and two schools, St. Regis and Holy Trinity.

Chuck calls his assignment, “God’s sense of humor. Most priests apply to the bishop for a particular parish. That’s never been my case. Every assignment has been here’s a situation I need you to help with. Many have been financial. I’ve used my De La Salle accounting knowledge after all.” Chuck notes that he had just

finished a $5 million dollar project at St. Regis, and “that prepared me to take on a bigger project.”

When the Parish Council at St. Regis found out Chuck was leaving, they wanted to plan a farewell. Chuck agreed under two conditions: one was for the farewell to be simple, and the other was for people to be generous and donate to the Holy Trinity Foundation. Parishioners donated over $35,000. “There are a lot of good people at St. Regis, and they have been willing to help, and continue to be interested in helping in some way.”

The last year has been a time of transition for Chuck and St. Anne’s. There is a lot of work to be done. The church’s five buildings are all in use: the Church, the rectory, the convent, the school, and the parish hall. The convent is leased to the non-profit organization Freedom House. It’s three floors are filled with bunk beds, and 40 people seeking political asylum, mainly from Africa, are living there. The school space is leased to the Detroit Public Schools for its “Academy of the Americas,” where children learn both in Spanish and English. The church hall, both an upstairs hall that was once a gymnasium with a stage and a lower hall, are used for parish activities.

At Holy Trinity, the grade school serves 170 students. Chuck says most families cannot afford tuition, and so he works to Continued on next page.

Holy Trinity offers a free clinic, the oldest operating free clinic in the United States, providing medical care to the homeless and uninsured three days a week.

Nearly 100 volunteers, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and non-medical people help out.

A free legal aid clinic is open on Thursday evenings, with pro-bono attorneys.

And of course, Holy Trinity, as the centerpiece of Corktown, is the site of the annual St. Patrick’s Day Mass, attracting the city’s “movers and shakers,’ and serving as a signature fundraiser for the parish.

As a pastor for 30 years at several parishes with schools, Chuck is in a unique position to promote education. “Probably because I had such a positive Catholic education at St. Raymond and De La Salle, I have always been passionate about good quality education.

I have an opportunity to really do that for the children here who would otherwise not have an opportunity. A good education is the best way out of poverty for these students.”

Chuck is no stranger to the Holy Trinity students. He is in the school several times each week, and offers the weekly school Mass.

“The students know who I am.”

He’s “re-learned” Spanish in the last year, and offers Mass in Spanish with a homily also in Spanish on alternate Sundays at the two parishes. “I hadn’t spoken Spanish since 2001.”

Optimism for Detroit

In his spare time - “And I don’t have a lot” - Chuck likes to travel.

“I take vacation breaks seriously.

Over the last 30 years, I’ve visited almost 50 countries, including Italy every year. I’ve made pilgrimages to the Holy Land. Travel is a way of getting away from the office.” He also enjoys some occasional golf and reading and relaxing by a pool. He enjoys getting to Florida for some R and R. And he sees his parents, Charles and Catherine Kosanke, who live in Grosse Pointe Woods, once a week, usually on the weekend.

Four of his five brothers, who were all DLS graduates, live in the area, and are married with families. They include Mark (‘79), Stephen (‘82), John (‘84), and Patrick (‘98). Only Tom (‘78) lives out of state.

Chuck is optimistic about Detroit, now about to note the 50 year anniversary of the 1967 riots that tore the city apart. “This is an exciting time to be in downtown Detroit,” says Chuck. “It’s a part of Detroit that is coming back, and I’m helping these two parishes to become stronger. Our two churches are becoming popular for downtown Catholic weddings.

Marty Dobson, ‘03, is now a licensed realtor with Real Living Kee Realty. He lives in Warren, MI. Paul Evancho, ‘82, is a USMC veteran, and a fire captain for the City of Yuma Fire Department. He also makes his home in Yuma, AZ. Tim Gasko, ‘78, is employed at the Shelby Township Meijer. He recently spent six years as a volunteer mentor at Macomb County’s Juvenile Justice Center.

Tim says, “It is very helpful for kids to have a sensible ear listening.” Tim still plays tennis. He was All State Tennis NJCAA 1979, and is a certified tennis professional. He has taught tennis for 25 years in the Detroit area, using “some of the many skills I learned at DLS, like determination, perseverance, and trust.” Tim lives in Clinton Township.

Matt Molinaro, ‘14, now a junior at Ohio Northern University, was runner up in the 800 meter run at the NCAA Division 3 Indoor Track & Field National Championships. He missed first by .5 seconds.

Brad Napiorkowski, ‘01, is a manager at JP Morgan Securities. He married in the Fall of 2016, and lives in Berwyn, IL. He and his wife are expecting their first child.

Gordon Pocialik, ‘03, lives in Naples, FL, and practices dentistry on Marco Island, and in Naples and Fort Myers. He and his wife Nicole have two sons.

Don Pollie, ‘67, recently retired from a large sporting goods store where he worked as a buyer for 32 years. He and his wife Mary have lived in Maine for the last 26 years. Two of his children live nearby, and another son is an emergency medicine doctor in Padre Island, TX. Don makes his winter home in Sebastian, FL, and says, “We are always open to visitors here in Maine or in Florida!”

Chris Scalise, ‘90, is currently working as an IT Operations Specialist for the Dean’s Office of the College of Fine, Performing, and Communication Arts at Wayne State University. Chris lives in Oak Park, MI.

Roger Goebel, ‘53, has taught corporate law at the Fordham University School of Law in New York City for the last 35 years, after 17 years of international business law practice, primarily in Paris, France. He is the lead co-author of the 4 edition of Goebel, Fox, Atik, Emmert, and Gerard, European Law (2015).

Recently, classmate Gordon Black, a poet and director of poetry symposia in Mendocino, CA, visited Roger.

Ed Mauch, ‘95, has been working as a radiologist in Port Huron, MI, for the last seven years. He and his wife make their home in Harrison Township, and have two children.

Ken Holman (‘93) and Brian Simpson (‘94) crossed paths on a business trip to Mexico in February 2017.

Alumni News Scott Steiner, ‘94, completed a Master’s of Divinity degree in May 2016, and was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church in June 2016 at the Cathedral Church of St. Paul in Detroit. In mid-March, Notre Dame began celebrating its 175th Anniversary by following the footsteps of its founder, Father Edward Sorin, from New York to South Bend, IN. The university selected 16 undergraduate singers to perform a concert in St. Peter’s Church, where Father Sorin said his first Mass upon arriving in the United States from France. Career Start Days

Many of you are willing to mentor a current student or alumnus. One way to help our current students will be to participate in “Career Start.” Rather than the traditional “Career Day” involving the entire student body, we’re going to make use of the late start schedules in the school calendar several times each semester. Our plan is to bring in several alumni who have a similar career, such as Accounting or Public Safety/Fire, and have students who specifically identified these areas meet with you for some small group conversation. We think it will be a great win-win!

Admissions News Three Benefits of the Summer Camp Experience Parents and teachers are always looking for ways to aid in the learning process during the summer months. In recent years, camps have developed as a meaningful way to fulfill this goal.

The National Summer Learning Association published findings by Duke University Professor Harris Cooper, who said “summer programs should be well-planned to complement the school year, not necessarily more of the same or an afterthought.” With that in mind, De La Salle Collegiate has grown our summer camp offerings to be complementary learning activities to what your child is already doing at school or in practice. We aim to provide students opportunities to explore new areas of interest while in a safe, healthy, and inclusive environment.

Here are the 3 major benefits from attending a summer camp:

1. Skills Development

At camp a student will learn and develop new abilities, techniques, and ideas – perhaps even discover and awaken a hidden talent or passion.

These opportunities can lead students to hone in on activities and interests that can fuel their future careers. In a study published by the American Camp Association (ACA), Dr. Peter Scales of

The Search Institute noted: “The biggest plus of camp is that camps help young people discover and explore their talent, interests, and values. Most schools don’t satisfy all these needs. Kids who have had these kinds of (camp) experiences end up being healthier and have less problems which concern us all.”

The threat of Summer Learning Loss, the loss of academic skills and knowledge over the course of summer holidays can be a great concern for parents and students.

Attending summer camps can provide meaningful learning experiences for both students and parents and reduce the gap for summer learning loss.

2. Self-Respect and Character Building

Camps provide additional opportunities for students to strengthen emerging skills of making new friends, taking risks, and learning how to take care of themselves and their own belongings. Jess Michaels, Director of

Communication for the ACA, noted in The Parent Guide News that “When children succeed at these activities, they build self-esteem.

Children also build social skills and problem-solving skills by being a part of a supportive community and partaking in activities together.”

3. Person to Person Communication

Summer camps continue to “plantthe-seed of success” in students.

The skills learned will carry-over into their future academic, artistic or athletic endeavor. According to the ACA, “Children are at less risk at camp where they have a sense of community, develop intergenerational relationships, and learn through first-hand experiences.

Trained, caring adult role models help children feel loved, capable, and included. Camp helps children grow by providing a supervised, positive environment that has safety as a primary commitment.”

I encourage you to find the right camp for your son or daughter so they continue their skill developing character building process and personal relationships.

Drop Into De La Salle Collegiate!

Every year families go through the evaluation and decision process for high school. Often it is a struggle to determine what school is the right fit for their son and family. The Admissions Office spends endless hours working with these families via email, phone calls, tours, etc. And the number one elixir is to take the time to get on campus.

Spending time on campus allows a family to meet the students, staff, coaches, and leadership. It provides an opportunity to get a feel for the campus culture, values, and priorities, while assessing if the people in charge are capable of delivering on the desired Catholic and college prep outcomes they desire for their son. No video, phone call, or website can truly substitute for getting on campus and walking around and meeting the people of that school.

A large number of young men participate in the Pilot for a Day Program, and then decide on De La Salle Collegiate. We annually survey parents and students at the beginning of freshman year. Parents routinely vote Open House and taking a tour as the deciding ac-

tion they took that lead them to enroll their children at De La Salle Collegiate.

Around De La Salle Annual Raffle Exceeds Goals The 43rd Annual Student Raffle, conducted during February 2017, exceeded the $175,000 goal, thanks to supportive Alumni and Friends of De La Salle.

The Raffle brought in $192,102. After expenses and payouts, the proceeds go to the Student Tuition Assistance Fund. This school year alone, deserving families are receiving more than $1.6 million, in Tuition Assistance.

Around De La Salle Historical Monstrance Restored

Thanks to the generosity of Mr. James Bardelline, a sacred piece of De La Salle’s history has been restored.

A special church vessel, a Monstrance, was found recently at the Christian Brothers’ residence.

The vessel is significant in that it dates from the early history of the school. A close examination of the engraving shows the vessel was made in France, in the ornate style of the times. Along with the date of 1930 on the base, the names of those who presented it to the school are also engraved.

What is a Monstrance?

A monstrance is a large, usually ornate cross, designed to show a large consecrated host (used by the priest while saying Mass) at its cross pieces.

The name monstrance, which comes from the Latin “to show” (think de-mon-strate), is used for special Eucharistic exhibition ceremonies, such as “adoration,” where the monstrance, containing the sacred host, is place on the altar to be reverenced by the faithful. Another such ceremony is Benediction. Following hymns and prayers, the priest picks up the monstrance from the altar and makes the sign of the cross with it, blessing those present. Such a blessing is seen as a blessing by Christ himself as opposed to a priest’s individual blessing. Benediction ceremonies are most often offered at the conclusion of Mass.

Around De La Salle De La Salle Students March For Life in Washington

Nearly 50 De La Salle Collegiate students, accompanied by Mr. Brian Barker, Mr. Chris Dean, Mr. Thaier Mukhtar, and Fr. John Kiselica, journeyed to Washington DC in late January to participate in the annual “March for Life.”

The students left on January 25, and traveled overnight by bus to the nation’s capital. They spent Thursday sightseeing.

On Friday, January 27, students attended Mass at the Verizon Center, along with thousands of other marchers from across the United States, before marching on the Mall.

A huge thanks to the Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary which provided funds for bus transportation for the trip.

Congratulations to these members of the Class of 2017 who have received appointments to the United States Military Academies.

On January 31, as part of the annual Catholic Schools Week Mass, several alumni fathers and grandfathers joined their sons for the Liturgy.

Mrs. Vicki Granger, English teacher at DLS from 1982 - 2004, and Director of Communications since 2004, with several alumni who were her students and are now parents of current Pilots. She said, “I love seeing these alumni.

They truly exemplify our motto of ‘Builders of Boys, Makers of Men’ and have continued their longtime relationship with the Collegiate.”

A Family Legacy Continues John Nicol (‘65) always knew he wanted to attend De La Salle Collegiate. Although he attended St. David’s Grade School, and St. David’s had a high school at the time, John’s father wanted him to attend DLS, and John wanted to become a Pilot as well. He also had many friends from St. David’s who went to DLS. John’s three sons, Scott (‘88), Todd (‘92), and Andrew (‘97), all attended the Utica Community Schools, but all three were happy to become Pilots.

“I was actively involved with the alumni, and always brought the boys to DLS games. They enjoyed them, and were never forced to attend,” says John.

Todd’s son, Ben, is now a senior, and he too, continued the family tradition by attending the Collegiate. John said, “Ben talked about wanting to attend DLS forever!”

Two Students Qualify for DECA International Competition

Seniors Jason Kathawa and Mike DeDecker qualified for the International Career Development Conference in Anaheim, CA, in April. Jason and Mike were among 21 students who competed in midMarch at the DECA (Distributive Education Clubs of America) State Development Conference in downtown Detroit.

State champions are decided by online test scores (test taken in February), and the two role play scores (both performed at the State Conference).

Around De La Salle Senior is Top Math Contestant Senior Russell Hu, placed 58th in the 60th Michigan Math Prize Competition (MMPC). This is the highest place for a DLS student in all the years of MMPC participation. Russell is eligible for scholarship money. He received the news at the MMPC Banquet on March 11. The MMPC is administered by Eastern Michigan University.

Earlier this year, Russell was awarded the 2017 Balgenorth Scholarship.

The scholarship, formally named the Richard A. Balgenorth Lasallian Award for Higher Education, is in tribute to the memory of Mr. Balgenorth, ‘75, and his belief that De La Salle Collegiate plays a crucial role as a foundation for lifelong learning. The Award aims to financially assist a graduating De La Salle senior continue his education at a college or university.

Russell is pictured at left with Mrs. Kim Balgenorth (wife of the late Richard), who is the Administrative Assistant in the DLS Counseling Department. Along with her family, Mrs. Balgenorth administers the scholarship.

Grant Awarded The National Football League Foundation awarded a $1,000 grant to De La Salle in September 2016 to be used for purchasing new football helmets and helmet reconditioning.

Chris Godfrey (‘76), who played professional football, made DLS aware of the grant, as part of the NFL’s “Golden Football” program celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Super Bowl in 2016. Players who had played in a Super Bowl were invited to name their high school as a recipient of a “Golden Football.”

Chris started in Super Bowl XXI for the New York Giants. The players’ high schools were also eligible to apply for the special grant.

Students are “Sweethearts” Over 30 DLS National Honor Society and Student Council members helped with the annual “Sweetheart Dance” and the Sanctuary at Fraser Villa, in Fraser, MI, a senior citizen residence. Students danced with residents, conversed with them and their families, and assisted with event clean-up.

Other championships were in 1993, 2000, and 2009.

Athletic News Champions! Hockey Captures First Ever State Title The DLS Varsity Hockey Team made its first trip to the State Hockey Finals, and came up winners with a 6-3 victory over the Calumet team, winners of multiple state championships.

In the Division 3 championship game, first year DLS hockey player Tom Hernandez, talked into playing for his school rather than travel hockey, scored the hat trick. Also scoring were Austin Scott, Greg Pine, and James Corbett.

The road to the U.S. Ice Arena and a shot at history was paved with shutout victories over University Liggett School in the pre-regional, Royal Oak in the Regional Championship, and Country Day in the quarterfinal. The Pilots beat Divine Child 5-2 in the semi-final. All together, through five playoff games, DLS outscored their opponents 25-5.

“I don’t know if it is the guys I am around or what, but this is the most relaxed I have ever been throughout the playoffs,” said Coach Staskowski. “There is something about these guys that created a sense of confidence.”

Hockey was inaugurated at DLS in 1999. The Pilots’ last trip to the Frozen Four was in 2014.

“I couldn’t be prouder of Coach Staskowski and the entire team,” De La Salle Athletic Director Mike Watson said. “The team faced adversity this season, but bought into the process of a very talented staff and made history for De La Salle. They played for each other. They are skilled and they are smart. Those ingredients are rarely a bad combination.”

The Pilots play a strong schedule in the state’s toughest league, the Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL), with Brother Rice, Catholic Central, University of Detroit Jesuit, Orchard Lake St. Mary, Trenton, Cranbrook, Port Huron Northern, and Grosse Pointe North.

Athletic News Sports Highlights Bowling

The DLS Varsity Bowling Team captured the CHSL Regular Season Championship with a 9-1 season, won the CHSL-East, and won the CHSL Tournament. They are the 2016-17 CHSL Overall champions.

The JV had a perfect season at 9-0.

Basketball

The varsity team competed for the CHSL A-B Championship against University of Detroit Jesuit, coming up short against the defending Class A State Champions.

As the Collegiate went to print, the varsity had captured the District Championship and won the Regional semi-final.

The JV team finished 10-5 overall; the Freshmen team was also 10-5 and won the CHSL tourney, taking down an undefeated, 17-0 U of D Jesuit team.

Wrestling The Wrestling Team won the Norsemen Classic in early January, and held on to the Challenge Cup for the fourth straight year vs CHSL rivals University of Detroit Jesuit.

The team was also a runner-up in the Cougar Classic and Fraser Duals.

Junior Reggie Bostock took sixth place in the Macomb County Championships, and along with fellow junior Damani Wallace, qualified for regionals. Both Reggie and Damani were selected to the Macomb County Wrestling Coaches Association All County Honorable Mention Team.

The Team earned Academic, All-State Honors.

Athletic News Pilots Swim to 17 All-State Medals The De La Salle Swimming and Diving Team finished 5th at the Division 2 State Finals on Saturday, March 11, at Eastern Michigan University, and earned 17 All-State Medals in 9 of the 12 events. For the first time in school history, the Pilots had qualifiers in all 12 events.

The Pilots’ 5th place finish overall was close to third place Birmingham Seaholm and Birmingham Groves.

Junior Zach Milke won the 100 Backstroke; he finished 3rd in this event in 2016. He broke his own school record set earlier this year with a time of 50.40.

The previous record was set in 2016 by PJ Desmet (‘16). Zach also finished 6th in the 50 Free.

At the CHSL Championships, Zach broke his own 50 free record, set in January in a dual meet against Brother Rice. The 50 free record, set in 1994, had been held by David Zulkiewski (‘95).

Zach also broke his own 100 freestyle record in the first leg of the 400 freestyle relay (46.31).

Daniel Frederick finished 4th in the 500 Free, breaking the school record he set in preliminaries. The previous DLS record of 4:41.60 was set in 1988 by Ron Yokubison (‘88). Daniel’s prelim time was 4:41.13, and he cut his time to 4:34.70 in the finals. Daniel’s time in this event in 2016 was about ten seconds slower, and he was still 4th, showing the tremendous competition in this event.

The team is also Academic All-State All American for the 8th consecutive year.
