This past winter, Pilot seniors attended Mass at the historic St. Joseph Church in Detroit, as part of an all-day retreat. St. Joseph’s High School closed in 1964, but the beautiful church remains open and is a Michigan Historic Site. The St. Joe’s story is the focus of Brother Thomas Lackey’s Letter on page 3, and more of the story and additional pictures are on pages 17 - 21.

From The President Dear De La Salle Family, I think the cover of this Collegiate captures the essence of De La Salle. You are looking at 80 or so seniors beginning a day of retreat with Mass at St. Joseph’s Church in Detroit.

Being in the church intrigued me. I knew the Brothers ran a high school at St. Joe’s which closed 50 years ago in 1964. But I knew nothing else about the Brothers in Detroit. Yet De La Salle Collegiate is living the legacy of the many Brothers who served in the Detroit area over the last 164 years.

So I give you a short history lesson. The first Brothers could have come to Detroit from Baltimore, which had the first school in the United States; from New York, which became the headquarters of the Brothers; or from Toronto, the closest city to Detroit with a Brothers’ school. But they didn’t. In 1851, four Brothers came from Quebec to teach at St. Anne’s French School. In the next seven years, four more schools were opened. Tuition was a quarter and 16 Brothers lived in one community to serve the five schools.

Alas, the economic stress caused by the Civil War and a plague of yellow fever forced the closing of all but St. Mary’s School (now in Greektown) by 1865. However, the relationship between the Brothers and the priests at St. Mary’s deteriorated, and we were asked to leave in 1877.

But, the pastor of St. Joe’s wanted us. Thus began St. Joseph’s School, and, in 1889, St. Joseph’s Commercial College with both a boys’ and girls’ division. There are women alive today who graduated from the College, which closed in 1942. The name was changed to St. Joseph’s High School, which was for boys, and this school lasted for another 22 years.

But I skipped part of living the legacy. In the early 1920’s, alumni from St. Joe’s wanted to guarantee the Brothers’ presence in Detroit and have a school without parish ties. They and the St. Joe’s Mothers’ Club raised money and purchased land at Glenfield and Conner. De La Salle Collegiate opened in 1926. However, it almost closed in 1929 with the beginning of the Depression. Students couldn’t pay tuition. Pledges dried up. The Brothers actually fed hungry students breakfast from the steps of the Brothers’ community. St. Joe’s alumni, mothers, and friends redoubled their efforts and the crisis passed. From this point on, De La Salle thrived.

Today De La Salle is the living legacy of the early French Canadian Brothers and of the Brothers and alumni of St. Joe’s. I want to thank the St. Joe’s Alumni Association, and the St. Joe’s alumni in general, who annually contribute thousands of dollars to De La Salle for financial aid. You are continuing the legacy.

“When I think about what Mark has done for De La Salle and the Brothers, I am in awe,” said Br. Thomas Lackey, FSC, President of De La Salle. “He is not only an ambassador for the school to his classmates, but also to the larger community in the Detroit area and outside of the State of Michigan.”

The Dinner, which began in 1982, is held at Penna’s of Sterling. Although called a dinner, the event is really a “mega-reunion” for many alumni, who appreciate the opportunity to see not only their own classmates, but also men who were students at De La Salle or St. Joe’s at the same time.

“The concentration is on spending quality time with friends,” said John Monigold, ‘66, Director of Alumni. “We have a short program, a great silent auction, and the meal is second to none. The Dinner is very special for many people.”

The Dinner has also been about generating support for the Christian Brothers’ Mission at De La Salle. Over the past ten years, the event has raised more than $1.5 million.

Mark added, “It is great when we gather together at the dinner with old friends and celebrate the good news of a Lasallian education. But every ticket we sell gives Br. 2014 Dinner Honoree...

A regular kid from a regular family on the East Side.

While in grade school at St. Raymond’s in Detroit, Mark Wisniewski thought he’d follow in his older brothers’ footsteps and attend Austin High School.

But Austin announced it was closing..

Thus Mark Wisniewski came to DLS as a Pilot.

And has been a Pilot and bleeding purple ever since…

“My uncle, Fr. Robert Wisniewski, was an Augustinian priest. He passed away in 1967 while training to be an Army chaplain. Ten years later, with the help of Fr. Bob’s fellow priests, and a very charitable ‘Augustinian’ discount, my two older brothers, Jim and Brian, attended Austin for their freshmen year in the Fall of 1977. In the Winter of 1978, Austin decided to close. With Austin set to close, where would the Wisniewski brothers attend high school?

“A Catholic school was a requirement. My parents talked to some neighbors and co-workers. They visited Bishop Gallagher, Notre Dame, St. Clement, and De La Salle. To them, De La Salle was the obvious choice.”

Mark notes that De La Salle opened its arms to the students from Austin and to his family. “It was the De La Salle way back then, and it is still true today.”

In the Fall of 1978, Jim and Brian, now sophomores, were joined by a third brother, Chris.

Mark says, “In January of 1979, I was accepted to De La Salle. Below average height, below average weight, and to be honest, an average student academically.”

At that time, tuition was about $1,000 per year, and in the Fall of 1979, four Wisniewski brothers would be at De La Salle. “Having four boys in the school at the same time would require unique financial skills for a family from the East Side of Detroit.”

Mark tells the story of his father negotiating tuition.

“With checkbook in hand, my father made the trip to see Br. Timothy Wentworth, who was then the Principal of De La Salle. One year earlier, it was to discuss the transfer of my brothers and tuition for three sons.”

Mark, his wife Mary and son Patrick Mark never knew the results of his father’s visit to DLS until several years later. By then, Mark was a college and law school graduate, and was serving on the Board of Trustees as President of the De La Salle Alumni Association. Mark says the board was considering tuition, and that Br. Kevin Gilhooly, who had been Principal at De La Salle and was then serving on the Board, said the conversation should always start with the question, “What more can we do as a Lasallian family to make sure that De La Salle is affordable for those who want to attend.”

Mark recounts that Br. Kevin then told this story. ”Before I started my first year as Principal, the outgoing Principal told me about a father who came to him. The Principal recognized the uncertainty in the father’s face, and asked how he could help him. The father responded by thanking the Christian Brothers for all they had done for his first three sons, but told the principal how he was unsure he would be able to pay for his four sons who would attend De La Salle the following year. The principal said, well, as you know your first son was full price, your second son was 25% off, and your third son was 50% off. There is nothing in the handbook about a fourth son. So my reading of the handbook is your fourth son is free.“

Mark has continued his affiliation with UDM, currently serving as the Alumni President for the UDM School of Law, and as an Adjunct Professor of Trial Practice.

“I don’t know how much poetic license Br. Kevin used in telling that story, but it really doesn’t matter,” says Mark.

“That single gesture by Br. Tim 35 years ago changed the lives of my family.”

Mark says the same question What more can we do as a Lasallian Family? still applies today. “That is why I have been involved with De La Salle for so long. We are all Lasallian ambassadors. We need to spread the news that Catholic education is alive and well in the Metro Detroit area, and that it is alive and well at De La Salle.”

During high school, following in his brother’s footsteps, Mark worked at Pyramid Art Supply, on Gratiot, doing stock and cleaning up for owner Mrs. Rita Szatkowski, mother of Mike Szatkowski, ‘73, DLS alumnus and faculty member. Mark says his interest in law was piqued by overhearing a woman who was taking an art class talk about some of her cases. “I was intrigued.”

He heads the Mass Tort Litigation Department, and has served as first chair in several multi-million property damage lawsuits, with a particular emphasis on cases involving asbestos. Mark is also experienced in medical malpractice, products liability, and premises liability defense.

Notably, Mark has been elected as a Michigan Super Lawyer every year since 2008; only five percent of the attorneys in the state are named Super Lawyers.

Mark’s post high-school involvement with De La Salle began with an invitation from his fellow Class of 1983 classmate, Paul Jozefczyk. “Paul was the first one to invite me to an alumni meeting after I graduated from law school, and the first person who invited me to the Christian Brothers’ Dinner.” Paul’s sons are currently juniors at De La Salle, and Paul is an active member of the DLS Dads’ Club.

“I truly enjoyed my four years at De La Salle where I met some of my greatest friends and was taught by some of the best teachers. These are people I gladly still call my best friends. But my love of De La Salle was actually strengthened when I became involved with the Alumni Association and later the Board of Trustees. These experiences allowed me the opportunity to meet so many people who truly love the school and care about Catholic and LaSallian education.”

Mark also notes that two of his other classmates are also involved with the Collegiate. Greg Shea is a member of the Board of Trustees, and Dave Kirck, Mark’s Michigan room-

mate, is a longtime member of the DLS English Department.

“The real success story of De La Salle lies with its teachers. Br. Carl Malacalza was my homeroom teacher and freshmen math teacher at De La Salle. He was the first Christian Brother I remember meeting. He was one of the kindest men I have ever met.

Br. Carl was the perfect balance of education and religion. Mike Szatkowski was my freshman European history teacher. Mike isn’t a Christian Brother, but he is Lasallian to the core. When people talk about Mike as a teacher, they talk about his passion for teaching. Mike has a gift. I thank him for sharing his gift with me. I remember reading Grapes of Wrath with Vicki

Advancement News Brother George Synan Society Planned Giving Dinner The Brother George Synan Society Dinner was held February 6, 2014, at Lochmoor Golf Club. Brother Dennis Malloy FSC, Provincial of the District of Eastern North America, was the scheduled speaker. Unfortunately, he was stranded in Chicago by the unyielding winter weather.

“We didn’t know until just hours before the Dinner that Br. Dennis’s flight had been cancelled,” said Director of Advancement Chris Czarnik. “So, it was a little like when the power goes out at home and you light some candles and enjoy the company of your family.”

As it turned out, the Dinner was one of the most memorable gatherings of the Society, which honors those who have made commitments to the future of De La Salle through a planned gift.

Jane Kay Nugent, widow of Bob Nugent, ‘42, and Bill Fox, ‘50, spoke emotionally about how the school’s Lasallian mission had touched their lives. Both Jane and Bill also urged prospective members to take the simple steps to join the Society.

Conversation With...

Banking Program Offers Practical Experience, Financial Literacy Since 2010, the Christian Financial Credit Union (CFCU) has been affiliated with De La Salle, both in and out of the classroom. CFCU created an actual branch within De La Salle, staffed by a branch administrator and students who are enrolled in the yearlong DLS Banking class. The class focuses on various aspects of Banking as well as Financial Literacy.

Included in the conversation were Mr. Patrick Adams (Principal of De La Salle), Mr. Dennis Koch, (DLS Faculty), Mrs. Aarran Meier (CFCU at DLS Branch Administrator), and Ms. Christine Quitter (Business Development Director for CFCU).

De La Salle has had an outstanding academic curriculum, with College Preparatory, Honors, and Advanced Placement classes. Why create a coop program within the school and add a Banking class?

Patrick: At my previous school, I brought in a full-service credit union for the students to work in and have as a resource. It emerged mainly from witnessing the power of the co-op program and the influence it had on the students. There was motivation and commitment there that was apparent in the kids that were able to exercise the opportunity.

When I came to DLS I began the same process. We brought in three credit unions who responded to my solicitation for setting up a full-service operation complete with a course in banking.

CFCU was the top candidate and was chosen for their passion, commitment to the community, and fidelity to our Lasallian Catholic mission.

From CFCU’s perspective, what’s the aim of the program?

Christine: We have several goals. One is to provide financial literacy, and another is to provide the students with practical job experience. For CFCU, it’s an opportunity to build a customer base with not only the students but also their parents. And it’s good for us to have students who are interested in the banking industry gain some practical experience. They’re not just a teller.

We expose the kids to other aspects of the banking industry, such as marketing and accounting.

Aarran: We don’t just educate students in class. They are able to help their peers have a better understanding of financial literacy. It’s a nice foundation for going out in the real world.

The opportunity to be in a Banking Class and to get practical training and experience attracts a lot of students. What goes into the selection process?

Christine: We know that the school begins its course registration process with students in February, so we start in January. Students fill out the same employment application that we have at CFCU, and then we interview students.

We encourage lots of kids to apply.

About 25 apply each year, and we select 10 - 12.

Christian Financial Credit Union Aarran: Such top-notch kids apply. It is really amazing. It’s a great opportunity for them and for us to have such good kids.

Christine: Some kids have never filled out an application or been through a job interview. That alone is good experience for them.

An actual credit union within a school building is unusual. Where is the CFCU at DLS? Aarran: We’re located right next to the Cafeteria, in a space that used to be a classroom. In fact, the space was originally a tiered choral classroom.

CFCU renovated the space, and created a true-bank like setting, with teller windows.

After a student is selected for the program, how does he get trained to

actually work inside the DLS CFCU? Christine: We have seven CFCU branches, and we have a two-week mandatory training at our Center Line Branch. Aarran teaches them, and other departments come in and go over all aspects of the credit union. The students are then assigned to a branch near their homes for another week, depending on their schedules.

Aarran: The students are paid during training, and paid for working throughout the summer. A lot of students work at their local CFCU branches during the school year, on weekends, vacations, and now, through college. For those who have been able to get into the program during their junior year, they can end up working that summer before 11th grade, then the summer before 12th grade, and then that sum-

mer before college. They can manage to earn quite a bit of money.

Students are working as tellers. What kinds of security precautions are in place?

Aarran: The same kinds of precautions we use at any of our CFCU branches: an ID, a signature for withdrawals. I handle adult transactions.

Do many students and staff members use the CFCU? Aarran: Yes, and each year it’s grown.

We have about 250 student accounts.

The current seniors were freshmen when we started, and they’ve learned to come in and make deposits and withdrawals. And they’re more comfortable asking questions. It’s nice for them because it’s here in school, in a safe environment.

CFCU Banking Student Moves On To A Career In Finance Joe Wiles, ‘11, is currently attending the University of Chicago. He was in the first group of CFCU-Banking students.

Joe said, “The CFCU experience was an invaluable introduction to banking from a professional perspective at a young age. It is uncommon to gain exposure to the type of work that we did as seniors in high school. The experience was quite educational and informative - from undergoing formal training at a CFCU branch, to the day to day responsibilities at the De La Salle branch, to the introductory banking course that accompanied the program.

“I chose to attend the University of Chicago after graduating, and decided to major in economics. After my first summer, I returned home to work at a law firm in Detroit,

as law was my preferred career path at the outset of my college career. However, a variety of influences on campus, combined with the spark of my exposure through Christian Financial, influenced me to pursue an internship in the financial services industry following my second year.”

Joe has since completed an 11-week internship in New York City during the summer of 2013, performing equity research and portfolio management projects for an asset management firm called New Amsterdam Partners. He calls the internship “an incredible experience which motivated me to continue pursuing a career in finance.”

This coming summer, Joe has been offered a position with Goldman Sachs in the firm’s Chicago office, within their Private Wealth Management division.

CFCU, Continued Christine: We’ve had students who have accounts, and then their parents start an account with us, and in some cases, have moved their business accounts to CFCU. Do students have checking accounts?

Debit cards?

Aarran: A student can have an account with a debit card as early as age 14 they need to have a joint account with their parents.

Can grandparents create accounts for their DLS grandsons?

Christine: Absolutely. We encourage all DLS students to have an account to promote saving for the future.

Typically, someone doesn’t earn a teaching certificate in banking.

What qualifies you, Aarran, and you, Dennis, to teach this course?

Aarran: My college degree was in Education, and I began teaching fifth grade at St. Jude Grade School (Detroit). I started working part-time at CFCU, and that turned into a full-time job.

Dennis: I have an undergraduate business degree from Michigan State University. I am also certified in Economics and Business Education.

What topics do you cover in the Banking Class?

Dennis: CFCU CEO Patty Campbell found us a textbook through the American Bankers’ Association. The class isn’t about becoming a robot teller. It’s more complicated than that.

Students learn the laws and regulations, personal finance, investments, 401k’s, technology and trends in

banking, and marketing.

Kids learn about marketing during the summer training. Do they do marketing during the school year?

Christine: In the fall, once the curriculum gets going, we talk with the kids and promote “Get in the Game,” to encourage savings to earn points.

At the end of the year, kids can redeem their points for merchandise, like Tiger tickets. We had a student last year who had earned so many points, he was able to have three separate pizza lunches for his friends. We also have several Christian Financial Credit Union sponsored events throughout the year that the kids work and help promote our services.

A lot of kids graduate from high school, and have no idea how to handle money. How do the Banking Students promote financial literacy?

Christine: We work on that in several ways. One thing we’ve done is participate in Money Smart Week. This is a

public awareness campaign designed to help consumers better manage their personal finances. The kids get the opportunity to participate in activities to promote saving money. They also attend the “MSW Kickoff” which takes place downtown at the Federal Reserve. Several guest speakers from our local media are in attendance to help promote this great event.

Dennis: We have a field trip to the Federal Reserve in Detroit during Money Smart Week, and this year, our three-day trip to Chicago was fantastic. We went to the Federal Reserve in Chicago, and also the Board of Trade.

We were there, on the floor, and could see the live trading going on. It was almost like a movie set. We also talked with Rick Santelli from CNBC, who primarily reports from the floor. It was a great experience for all of us.

The CFCU and the Banking program has been in place now for four years.

Is the program successful?

CFCU, Continued Dennis: I feel the program is very successful because of the unique partnership between De La Salle and CFCU. This is a great opportunity for our students to learn not only about banking, but to gain advanced financial knowledge. Several are interested in pursuing careers in finance. And it’s a great first job. This is definitely a resume builder.

Christine: We have all kinds of kids involved in the program. We have some kids who are shy or reserved, and they are forced to speak and interact because they are working here. This helps them with their social skills. We’ve seen kids really blossom. We don’t have “cookiecutter” kids in the program. What’s nice is seeing kids who really didn’t know each other make new friends. They make each other better.

Aarran: They gain confidence that carries over to other aspects of their lives.

They get a great real world experience in a safe comfortable environment.

Christine: Aarran is here for their entire experience, from the time they are accepted, through summer training, then checking in with them as they work in other branches through the rest of the summer, and then through the school year in the classroom and here in the branch. She is here to supervise, but to help them be as independent as possible in carrying out their CFCU responsibilities.

Patrick: The relationship has surpassed our original expectations. CFCU has become not only a partner in many respects, but has provided a link to financial literacy to all of our students.

Banking Students visit Chicago Federal Reserve In early March 2014, the DLS - CFCU Banking students, accompanied

by Mr. Dennis Koch and Mrs. Aarran Meier, traveled to Chicago to visit the Federal Reserve and the Board of Trade. The students also enjoyed some sightseeing and attended a basketball game at Northwestern University.

Senior Jonathan Evans said, “It was a unique experience. We learned a lot about what the Board of Trade really does, and how it affects the current market. We learned that technology is really taking over, and the human role is diminishing.” Jonathan plans to major in Business at the University of Michigan.

Senior Jim Stehlin, also headed to Michigan and a major in Business, signed up for the Banking class after taking Mr. Koch’s Economics class his junior year. “I found it interesting to see the people in the ‘pits.’ We talked with various traders; sometimes they represent themselves, some are backed by financial companies. They make a difference in the entire global economy.”

Ross McDonald

Varsity Football Head Coach, 1989 - 1999 An unexpected play in the mud and rain of an overtime football game against Cass Tech.

A fake point-after attempt that became a pass and a two-point conversion that resulted in a 22-21 Pilot victory, and another week in the 1994 playoffs.

And the most memorable moment for Ross McDonald, who coached DLS into their first-ever state playoff appearance a generation ago.

Now retired from his high school teaching job, McDonald and his wife spend their time traveling and babysitting their grandchildren.

But talk about the Pilots, the “great players and coaches” he had to work with during his time at DLS, and the years melt away.

McDonald had been teaching at Fraser High School for several years before becoming the school’s head varsity coach in 1974. The Ramblers were successful, but McDonald saw the DLS coaching vacancy in 1989 as an opportunity for a new challenge.

“Our enrollment had dropped at Fraser, and we were no longer playing the ‘big’ schools - Eisenhower and Stevenson.

When the DLS position opened up, I thought it was a great opportunity for me to have a new challenge, and coach against two of the all-time successful coaches - Al Fracassa at Brother Rice and Tom Mach at Catholic Central.”

McDonald’s staff included DLS veterans - Tony DeSantis, Mike Szatkowski, and Steve Vercammen. Along the

way, Scott Grimmer joined the DLS teaching staff and became McDonald’s freshman coach.

“They were great guys to work with, and we had some great athletes, great teams.

Tony DeSantis said we were the first CHSL team to beat Rice AND Catholic Central in the same year (1994). That was quite an accomplishment.”

At the 2013 Christian Brothers’ Dinner: Steve Vercammen, former DLS Athletic Director and Coach, Ross McDonald, and Will Barnes, who coached DLS football along with McDonald.

A high school football player, McDonald was on the 1959 Cooley High School team that played St. Ambrose in the Goodfellows game the game then recognized as the “City Championship” with the CHSL putting its champion up against the Detroit Public School League Champs in a game at Briggs Stadium.

McDonald, who also played hockey during high school on teams around the Detroit area, played some football at a community college in Colorado, before being offered a scholarship at Arizona State University.

“I didn’t like the West, and decided to turn down Arizona and come home.

I went to Michigan State and was a walk-on.”

However, injuries cut short his college football aspirations, and McDonald pursued a teaching degree in physical education.

One day, walking into the MSU ice arena, he noticed a fellow phys ed

student doing figure skating on the ice.

That skater was his wife-to-be, Peggy.

This year, they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary.

While McDonald coached football, and for a while hockey at Fraser, Peggy initiated the “Learn to Skate” program at the Fraser Ice Arena, and coached synchronized skating. Peggy’s teams did well in competition, and the McDonalds traveled to various countries for competitions, including Sweden, Finland, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Peggy still coaches a few days a week, primarily teaching skating to 8-12 year olds at Fraser.

McDonald stepped away from coaching at the end of the 1999 season, and hasn’t looked back. In the fall of 2000, he was golfing at St. Andrew’s in Scotland - a lifelong dream. He has also golfed at Pebble Beach, and regularly golfs near his place “up north” in the Cadillac-Traverse City area.

And McDonald will be at the Christian Brothers’ Dinner. “I try to never miss it. I enjoy seeing those guys I coached.

We had some good times.”

Ross McDonald How “Jane” Won the 1994 Playoff Game The Pilots on that 1994 team fondly remember that playoff game against Cass Tech, and the fake play, called “Jane” for a player’s then-girlfriend. Here are their comments from a post on the De La Salle Collegiate Alumni Facebook page: “Mark Julien was the holder, and we talked on the sideline that we could not stop them from the 10 yard line in OT. We needed to win it right then. Coach McDonald didn’t hesitate, and Jamie Sheridan threw a great block to give Julien an extra second to complete the pass. Bert Bondi never dropped a pass in his life so when the ball was in the air, we knew we won!

Next thing, I am in the middle of a pile celebrating. Mud from head to toe. By far, the best memory of our careers.”

cd “Greg Peterson will appreciate my memory for details, but he’s got it exactly right. Also noteworthy was that Cass Tech was undefeated and the #1 seed in the playoffs. We were 8-1, and Central Division Champs (we lost to OLSM in the Prep Bowl).

Cass Tech’s RB, Clarence Williams, went on to play for U. of M. and rushed for 200+ yards against our defense, even though our ‘D’ gave up less than 10 points per game that season. In the game, we fell behind 14 - 0.

Junior QB Matt Bitonti came off the bench in the second series, threw a long TD to Jerry Trondle, and rushed for the TD (QB sneak in OT). Also, although senior RB Matt Mylnarek was our horse that year, his younger brother, freshman Dan, scored our game-tying TD in regulation.

“In OT, Williams scored on the first play making it 21-14. After we scored to make it 21-20, our Defensive

Coordinator, Tony DeSantis, was instrumental in the decision to fake.

“Finally, while Bert Bondi never dropped the ball, he did get knocked off his route at the line of scrimmage, and was slow getting to his route, which made Sheridan’s block crucial.”

Tom Markowski, veteran Detroit news reporter, remembers the 1994 playoff game. Tom predicted that Cass would win by 2, and wrote the game story for the November 6, 1994 Detroit News Sports Section.

“It’s one of the most memorable games I have covered. Rained the entire game. It was a downpour. Clarence Williams of Cass Tech was their All-State running back who went on to Michigan and played in a Rose Bowl win.

“Afterwards, I told people someone forgot to tell Williams it was raining. He ran as if it were a dry field.

“Coach (McDonald) did a heckuva job calling the fake two-point conversion. He told me he didn’t think his defense could stop Williams, so this was his best chance at winning.

“Cass Tech was very good that season. A number of their players were stunned afterward. They couldn’t believe they lost. Literally, they thought they had another chance in the second overtime. It didn’t sink in right away that the two-point conversion gave De La Salle the victory.”

Admissions News A Note from Admissions Director Bill Burkhardt Dear Pilot Nation, We have another excellent freshmen class ready to carry on the De La Salle legacy. During two weeks in March, we had over 200 students register for the Class of 2018, proving once again the demand for a Lasallian Catholic education is as strong as ever on the eastside of MetroDetroit. That demand is strengthened by the administration’s commitment to offering an academically rigorous curriculum for all levels of students.

The wide and challenging curriculum allows us to draw students from all over. They are drawn because of programs like FAST, AP, and the newly instituted International Baccalaureate Diploma Program. This is evidenced in our most recent class by having over 30 students declare they intend to pursue that IB diploma.

When we reviewed the makeup of that class further, we saw another trend showing just how much our reach is changing. Over 45% of the Class of 2018 is made up of public and charter school students. This is a trend that we expect to continue.

St Joe’s Memories The Blue Jay Tradition The legacy of St. Joseph’s High School has endured, despite the closure of its doors at Jay and Orleans in 1964. The ending of an era created a new partnership of St. Joe’s Alumni with De La Salle Collegiate. This partnership has made a significant difference as these men, these “Brothers’ Boys” work together to continue the Lasallian tradition.

St. Joe’s - In the Beginning Christian Brothers began teaching in the St. Joseph Parish school in 1877, and the parish opened St. Joseph’s Commercial College in December 1889. The first group of 13 students received diplomas at the first graduation exercises in June 1892.

In succeeding years, there were remodelings and additions to the original structure.

In 1923, 14 St. Joe’s alumni, noting the population shifts in the city, conducted a $100,000 fundraising drive to purchase a 10-acre tract of land about 5 miles away, near Gratiot Avenue, at Connor and Glenfield. The groundbreaking took place in 1925, the cornerstone was laid in January 1926, and in September 1926, 85 students began classes.

Shortly after DLS had its first graduation ceremony in 1929, the stock market crashed. De La Salle’s future was in peril, as many ceased paying on pledges, and families were unable to pay tuition. The Brothers had few resources, but the St. Joe’s Ladies’ Auxiliary redoubled its efforts to carry DLS through the crisis.

Better days came, and by 1936, DLS expanded to serve its increased enrollment of just under 500 students.

Meanwhile, at St. Joe’s, the Archdiocese of Detroit decided in 1942 to close both St. Joe’s Grade School, and the girls’ high school. Eleven Christian Brothers took over the school, and in 1944 purchased the building from the Archdiocese, renaming it St. Joseph’s High School. At the time, 495 young men from 60 Detroit area parishes were registered.

By 1964, only one student was actually a St. Joe’s parishioner. The school building had fire and building code violations; rebuilding carried a staggering price tag. The decision to close, a decision that had lingered for several years, finally came. The Archdiocese repurchased the building, holding the land to see if the building would be needed.

The 1964 graduates left, some to then Bishop Gallagher, conducted by the

St Joe’s Memories Christian Brothers from the Chicago Province, some to other parish high schools, and many to De La Salle.

Eventually, the old school building was torn down. That space is now the parking lot for St. Joseph’s Church.

Pilots vs Blue Jays The rivalry between the two schools was intense. Both served a Detroit-area population. Both served boys. And both were conducted by the Brothers of the Christian Schools from the New York Province.

Br. Bob Carnaghi, SJ ‘48, recalled the chants to the tune of “The Old Grey Mare.”

For De La Salle students, the chant/song was “Old St. Joe’s, she ain’t what she used to be, ain’t what she used to be, many long years ago.”

And, Br. Bob says, the Blue Jays would chant back “Old St. Joe’s was old St Joe’s when De La Salle was a pup. Old St. Joe’s will be old St. Joe’s when De La Salle grows up.”

Br. Patrick McNally, SJ ‘55, also recalled the rivalry between the two schools. “Once we had a football game, and our St. Joe’s Principal had told us we could have Monday off if we won the game. We lost, but the game was so close, the Principal told us we had won a moral victory. We spent that Monday driving around DLS, who had won but had school anyway. Those were fun times. Honking our horns at our rivals all day.”

The influx of “Old St. Joe’s” Blue Jays in 1964 had an impact at DLS. The Provincial at the time thought it would be good for Br. Patrick McNally, SJ ‘55, to return to Detroit to help ease the transition for the St. Joe’s students.

Br. Thomas Lackey, ‘65, current President of De La Salle, recalled that year.

“I was going into my senior year at De La Salle when St. Joseph’s High School closed. About 70 to 80 new students joined the Class of 1965. The DLS football team improved to 5 - 2 because of some of these young men.

“But I most remember one Brother who made the move to DLS - Br. Leo Michels. He taught Math and was one

St. Joe’s Memories of the best teachers I ever had.

“I can only say that St. Joe’s students and faculty added so much to De La Salle.”

Blue Jay Support of Christian Brothers and De La Salle Unwavering Despite being closed for the last 50 years, the spirit of St. Joe’s and its alumni continues. Their alumni have served on the Board of Trustees at De La Salle and several have been honored at the Christian Brothers’ Dinner. Several classes hold joint reunions. Alumni from St. Joe’s attend the annual Senior Alumni summer luncheon and the holiday gathering. And the St. Joe’s Alumni Association makes a significant contribution each year to De La Salle.

Remembering St. Joe’s My education was the best. The Brothers were great men, and had respect for all the students.

I loved the rivalry between our Brothers’ schools. The nights before the “big game” were memorable. The “shack by the tracks” gave “the fort by the port” many exciting moments.

Our alumni group is still strong. Thanks to Br. Kevin Gilhooly who brought both alumni groups together when he invited “us “ to La Salle for our alumni meetings. We kept in touch with many Brothers after our closing, talking about the memories at St. Joe’s.

The motto “Builders of Boys, Makers of Men” was so true as you look back at what the Brothers were trying to instill in us.

I still attend St. Joseph Church and encourage all alumni to do so. The Church is still one of the most beautiful churches in Detroit.

Live, Jesus in our hearts, forever.

What a great facility - old with a lot of enthusiastic features. Mass in the morning. Ties to enter into the school.

Lunch in the basement. Waiting for the bell to ring at 2:15 p.m. You could leave if your grades were at the proper level.

We had great sports programs - football, basketball, track. I would do it all over with the same educators - Br. Christopher Foley, Br. Arnold Francis, Br. James, Br. Dominic.

I have great memories.

The De La Salle senior class held its Senior Retreat at St. Joe’s over two days in February. Br. Bob Carnaghi (SJ ‘48) and Br. Pat McNally (SJ ‘55) shared the history of the Christian Brothers in Detroit , St. Joseph’s Parish, and St. Joseph’s High School. The two also explained how St. Joe’s Alumni created De La Salle in 1926, and the influence of the Blue Jay Alumni in continuing the Lasallian mission of education.

Alumni Spotlight

Peter Lucido, Class of 1978 22

Filling a Niche When the economic downturn of 2008 - 2009 hit Michigan and Macomb County, Peter Lucido decided to do something to promote Macomb County.

An attorney with a long-established legal practice, with seven attorneys and 12 support staff, Pete says, “The County, like anywhere else, was having tough economic times. I wanted to bring something that was positive, that was energetic, that would be inspirational to people.”

Thus, the Macomb Now magazine was born, a quarterly publication that highlights life in Macomb County, including its people and businesses. The first issue was launched in January 2010.

As the publisher, Pete meets with his Executive Editor, Tracey Moro, and together they plan each issue. The magazine has a staff of writers and photographers, including Jim Jacobs, president of Macomb Community College, who writes about economic issues, and Dennis LeDuc (‘65),

a Macomb County District Judge with an interest in local history.

Comparable to the long-established Hour magazine, Macomb Now is printed on heavier, glossy paper, with quality color photographs and eye-catching page layouts.

In fact, Pete was approached by the Hour publishers, who wanted to buy out Macomb Now, but he wanted to retain the magazine’s focus on Macomb County people and businesses. “Hour covers Oakland County, the west side, and downtown, but they weren’t covering Macomb. It was a lost opportunity for them, but a niche market for us.”

Macomb Now is sold at over 300 venues and by subscription. The magazine has a print run over over 15,000. The magazine is also distributed to various hospitals, libraries, and government offices, as well as businesses throughout the county.

A recent cover featured Macomb County’s home-grown musician Robert Ritchie, more popularly known as Kid Rock.

DLS alumnus Danny DeKeyser (‘08), now playing with the Detroit Red Wings, was featured on the Winter 2014 cover.

The magazine has a website www.macombnowmagazine. com and a Facebook page with the same name.

Pete says, “We’re proud to call Macomb County our home.

We’ve got a great place to live in, and a great place to do business and play in. We have a magazine that gives us some identity. We like to showcase and highlight individuals and businesses and the quality of life we have here.”

From “The Green Grocer” to Macomb Now One of eight children, Pete attended St. Isaac Jogues Grade School in St. Clair Shores. Two of his older brothers attended Austin High School, and Pete thought he’d be heading to Austin as well. But a family friend, Anthony Brune (‘38), suggested to Pete’s mother that De La Salle would be a better fit.

During high school, Pete helped his father, “The Green Grocer,” delivering fresh produce to homes. He also worked at the Mr. C’s Bakery at 10 Mile and Harper. “We had a big family. I needed to work to help out,” says Pete.

Pete began college by taking classes at Macomb. “My first class was Business Law. That got me thinking how law could be used to help people, to help businesses.” A year out of high school, Pete became a licensed insurance agent, and in 1981, a licensed realtor. He co-founded Lucido’s Insurance Agency in 1990.

He worked with Macomb County Judge Linda Davis to create Families Against Narcotics (FAN). “So many families need help in dealing with their children who become hooked on prescription drugs.”

Remembering Brother George Pete has fond memories of Brother George Synan, and remembers interacting with him on an almost daily basis during high school. “He could look you in the eyes and know how you were feeling. He would pull you aside, and look right at you, and ask you how you were. That was very reassuring to know he was there.”

Pete visited Br. George after his move from Warren to the Brothers’ senior retirement center in Lincroft, NJ. “I owed it to him to tell him what he meant to me.”

“My Catholic education shaped me. It was the best thing that ever happened to me,” says Pete.

He encourages his fellow alumni to become involved. “You don’t realize until you’ve been away from high school for a few years what De La Salle gives you. It’s important to give your time, your talent, and if you can, some of your treasure. Don’t wait to become a part of the Lasallian community. There is a lot to be learned from the other alumni who are there giving back.”

Pete is a member of the DLS Board of Trustees. He and his wife Anne Marie are the parents of three children. They live in Shelby Township.

After earning his Associate’s degree from Macomb, Pete attended Oakland University, earning a Bachelor’s in Public Administration and Business. He earned his MBA from Central Michigan University, before attending the Detroit College of Law (now the Michigan State University School of Law).

Pete is active in Macomb County, serving on a variety of charitable boards, and sponsoring several events in the area.

He has also served on the Oakland University Board of Trustees, and initiated the Citizens’ Law School in 1997, giving people an opportunity to learn about the legal system.

Alumni News From Mites to the Majors Danny DeKeyser, ‘08 Detroit Red Wings Defenseman He was a Mini-Mite, playing hockey at the St. Clair Shores Civic Arena.

He missed lots of Thanksgivings, and headed for tournaments the day after Christmas for years.

He went on to play junior hockey, and then college hockey at Western Michigan University, wearing #5, the same number as retired Detroit Red Wings’ defenseman Nick Lidstrom.

And now, he’s a Detroit Red Wing, playing on the very ice at Joe Louis Arena where he watched numerous games from the stands, and realizing his dream of playing professional hockey.

Danny DeKeyser, ‘08, grew up as the youngest of seven children, and attended St. Mary’s in Mt. Clemens before his four years at De La Salle.

Through his senior year, he carried the cross at Sunday masses at St. Peter’s, also in Mt. Clemens.

And played some hockey. And had part-time jobs waiting tables at the Beach Grill in St. Clair Shores and later bartending at the Tin Fish in Algonac.

During his senior year, Danny played for the Detroit Compuware team, followed by a two-year stint in junior hockey, with stops in British Columbia and Sioux City, Iowa.

Then, it was on to college hockey, at Western Michigan University, where

he earned CCHA honors each year, including First Team for the 2012-13 season, and Best Defensive Defenseman in consecutive years.

“It was a little weird, being two years older than the other freshmen, but a lot of players do that.”

The 6’3”, 198 lb. defenseman, who shoots left, was pursued by multiple teams around the NHL, but decided continuing to play college hockey for the Broncos, improving his skills, and working on his degree, was the better course. “I didn’t want to lose a year of college playing in the minors. I loved college, and didn’t want to leave. I talked to my parents about it and they were supportive of me no matter what I decided. I knew that once I left I wouldn’t be going back.”

After the college hockey season ended in the Spring of 2013, Danny played briefly for the Grand Rapids Griffins, before signing a two-year contract with the Red Wings in late March 2013. He played in 11 Wings’ games at the end of their season.

“You kind of pinch yourself. You’re playing pro hockey. Especially at the start, I didn’t know what to expect.

I’m settled in now, but at the start of the season I was nervous. I grew up admiring Federov. Yzerman. Lidstrom.

And now here I am playing for the Wings.”

Now on the second line for the Wings, Danny says he is mentored by captain Henrik Zetterberg, and first line defensemen Niklas Kronwall and Jonathan Ericsson.

“They’re veterans. They know the ropes. They’ve been through everything. Most of them speak pretty good English.”

He says the coaches on the bench say something when they need to. “We watch video a couple of times a week.”

A sportswriter for bleacherreport.com wrote a November 2013 article, “Why Detroit Red Wings’ Danny DeKeyser Could be the Next Nicklas Lidstrom.”

Danny says, “That’s very flattering, but I would have to talk to the author and see what he was thinking.

Lidstrom was a once-in-a-generation talent. A seven-time Norris Trophy Winner. Probably one of the top two defensemen of all time. But it’s a great compliment, and I’ll take it.”

Of the NHL players he’s encountered, Danny cites Alexander Ovechkin (Washington Capitals) as one of the toughest to defend. “He can shoot so hard. So can Joe Thornton with the (San Jose) Sharks. There are a lot of really good players in the league. Guys on the third line that are hard to play against, not just the guys you hear about on SportsCenter.” But, Danny adds, “You have to remember this is a guy in a uniform. You just go out there and play.”

His parents attend every home game, as do many of his brothers and sisters.

He has yet to commemorate his first goal, scored November 4, 2013, by mounting the puck. “I’ve got it in a drawer. I’ll get it on a plaque once the season is over.”

Danny loved watching the Winter Olympics, particularly hockey, but doesn’t know if he will ever be able to fulfill his goal of playing for Team USA if the rules change and professional players are excluded. “You’re

“I was getting 30-40 messages a day, hundreds of friend requests. It was getting to be too much.”

He recently returned to Western Michigan University for a charity event for a particular form of muscular dystrophy that has no cure. He wears a wristband that says “No Bad Days,” dedicated to raising awareness of the disease.

Danny credits the De La Salle faculty for teaching good morals. “The motto of the school, ‘Builders of Boys, Makers of Men,’ means that they are going to send you out into the world, ready to go.”

Alex Avila Visits DLS Alumni DLS Alumnus Paul Wilk (‘85), Chief of the Hamtramck Fire Department, welcomed one-time DLS student and current Detroit Tiger Alex Avila as the HFD celebrated its 100th anniversary in late January. Alex was part of the Tiger Caravan, making stops at various Metro-area locations.

Alumni News Edmund Milke, ‘34, our oldest living alumnus, is pleased his great-grandson Zachary Milke will be starting DLS as a freshman in the Fall of 2014, as a member of the Class of 2018.

Jim Plutschuck, ‘53, was inducted into the Macomb County Coaches Hall of Fame in May 2013. Jim was the head basketball and baseball coach at Sacred Heart Roseville from 1961 - 1965, and then spent the next 21 years as the head varsity boys’ basketball coach at Utica High School, where he won 6 league championships and one district title. He also served as the head cross-country coach at Utica. For the past 18 years, Jim has worked at the MSU Summer Basketball Camp with Head Coach Tom Izzo. Jim has also worked camps at Northwestern, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio State.

Paul Giurlanda, ‘64, was recently honored for 35 years of service as a Professor of Religious Studies at St. Mary’s College of California. His memoir, Vistas, has just been published, and is available on Amazon.

Don Sitarski, ‘65, has decided to retire from his purchasing job at Ford Motor Co. at the end of the year. Don has been with Ford for over 40 years.

Peter Lucido, ‘78, has practiced law for over 25 years and is the Founder and Publisher of Macomb Now Magazine, which is Macomb County’s exclusive lifestyle magazine. He has decided to run for the Michigan State House of Representatives for the 36th District, representing the Townships of Shelby, Washington, and Bruce, and the Village of Romeo. Pete, a fellow Pilot, is preparing for the primary election on Tuesday, August 5, 2014.

Bill Sheridan, ‘77, has joined the Detroit Lions as the linebackers coach.

Bill was most recently with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mike Davis, ‘93 and his family recently moved to Troy. Mike is working as an Agile Project Manager at Comerica Bank in Auburn Hills. Mike and his wife Laura recently welcomed their fourth child.

University, was recently named the MAC Pitcher of the Week.

Eric Ratkowski,‘10, has received a full scholarship for the Law School at Wayne State University. His undergraduate degree is in Journalism from Oakland University.

Alexander Tu, ‘11, was named to Albion College’s Dean’s List for the Fall 2013 semester. Students named to the List must achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Alexander is majoring in biology and biochemistry and is a member of the Prentiss M. Brown Honors Program.

Connar Tava, ‘12, and the Western Michigan University Broncos were the MAC Champions and appeared in the second round of the 2014 NCAA Men’s Division 1 Basketball Tournament against Syracuse. The three-year DLS Varsity starter had a “circus shot” against Toledo in the MAC Championship game that was featured on the SportsCenter Top Ten plays of the week on March 15. Connar averaged 12 points and nearly six rebounds per game in his sophomore season.

Around De La Salle Making a Difference As always, our De La Salle students and alumni actively “Make a Difference” in the Metro Detroit community.

DLS students raised money for Imago Dei, a Crisis Pregnancy Center in Warren, through the sale of paczkis on “Fat Tuesday.”

DLS alumnus Sean Shepard, ’11, a Nursing student at Wayne State University, is making a second humanitarian trip this summer to Honduras with the Global Medical Brigade, bringing medical supplies and personal hygiene items.

Class of 2018 Will Use Personal Computers De La Salle’s freshman class of 2018 will be unique in more ways than one.

These young men will be the first class who will be required to have a personal computer with them every day. Our Technology Leadership team developed specifications that each computer must meet so the function of everyone’s device will be consistent and meet the daily need.

Our students live with their devices!

Further, we now recognize that students can have multiple teachers in any given subject. Confused in math? Students Google the Khan Academy for help. Struggling with the research paper? One search puts a student immediately in a tutorial with a college professor. The possibilities are endless and liberating.

The decision to require a device is not a novel one, nor was it a risky one.

The technological capability of our students, much like those of all students in that age bracket, is quite high and we recognize that life with a Smart phone, tablet, iPad, etc., is a cultural reality.

We chose to move forward and meet our students’ need with this 1:1 initiative. Since we are a Google school, it made sense to use the Chromebook tablet. Currently we have over 100 Chromebooks in use on a daily basis.

This initiative will continue year after

year until our policy includes all students at the Collegiate.

Some students may have difficulty affording a personal computer, and DLS will provide one. DLS is soliciting donors to assist in providing these computers.

Around De La Salle DLS Completes IB Application Process De La Salle has completed the application process to become certified as an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. The application for authorization was submitted in early April, and an authorization visit is scheduled in the Fall of 2014. DLS will find out by March 2015 whether it is granted IB status.

The school plans to offer the rigorous, two-year curriculum beginning with the 2015 - 2016 school year.

The IB program will expand the college-preparatory program at De La Salle, which includes College Preparatory, Honors, and 12 Advanced Placement courses.

Only two other private institutions in the Detroit area have IB programs, and only two public school districts within Macomb County offer IB at the high school level.

All of the DLS teachers who will be involved with the IB program have attended training at Rice University (Texas) or in Florida. The school’s administration - Principal Patrick Adams, Assistant Principals Chris Dean and Steve Stewart, and Athletic Director/Assistant Principal Brian Kelly - has also been through the training.

Faculty member Mrs. Stephanie Howay, who is the IB Coordinator, said that the teachers are going through Category 1 training, for teachers new to the program, as well as the Category 2 training, for experienced IB teachers.

“We thought it be beneficial to glean from the experience of people already part of a formalized IB program.”

Principal Patrick Adams says, “The International Baccalaureate program will be a galvanizing force in devel-

oping the way our teachers interact with their students. Each year, more teachers will attend IB training until every faculty member completes the certification. This way our staff will embrace the methodology and pedagogy of the IB program at all levels.”

Mrs. Howay added, “This is an exciting opportunity for students as well as teachers. Every teacher who has been trained is able to incorporate something into every class. There has been a lot of professional development through IB.” Mr. Adams notes, “What is unique is that our journey of professional development has pointed at the exact same things requisite in the IB training: Involving students in their learning, developing assessment that check for higher order thinking, and emphasizing the need to demonstrate proficiency on essential learnings, among other targets. We’re excited and committed to continue the journey until ultimately De La Salle is the premier academic institution in the State.”

The IB consultant who visited in January 2014 noted that DLS was way ahead of where other schools usually are at this point in the process.

Established in 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland, the IB program was originally developed for the children of diplomats in order to provide a portable, rigorous education as these children lived in various places. The curriculum is taught in an interdisciplinary manner, and is project-based. The student is responsible for demonstrating mastery at the end of each course. Students earn the IB diploma by completing the requisite number of courses in the program. More information about the program is online at www.ibo.org

Around De La Salle Pilots Successful in Inaugural Mock Trial Competition Students interested in a legal career had the opportunity this year to “act out” a fictional criminal trial as part of the “Mock Trial” competition through the Michigan Center for Civic Education.

five other area high schools in the inaugural Macomb County Regional Tournament, at the Macomb County Circuit Court. The students acted out a fictional criminal trial by taking on the roles of attorneys and witnesses.

Panels of real judges and lawyers served as the presiding judge and jury.

The DLS team also took a field trip to the Macomb County Circuit Court (Mt. Clemens) to watch the proceedings of a real criminal case.

In early March, the DLS mock trial team competed against

a run at the championship, and he was right. Our boys were fantastic in this initial season under Ben Aloia’s guidance.

This will be an ongoing opportunity for those students at De La Salle who are interested in a career in law. Plus, it’s a lot of fun, too!”

Senior Louis Zingas said, “It was a great experience. I learned a lot. Mr. Aloia was great. He helped us all so much.”

“This was an excellent opportunity, and the guys took full advantage,” said Jacob Jones. “They really worked hard, and it showed in their performance at the competition.”

Concert Band Repeats Superior Rating The De La Salle Concert Band earned an overall “Superior” rating, the highest rating possible, and earned straight “1’s” across the board, in the MSBOA District XVI Band Festival in mid-March. Regina students join DLS students in the Concert Band. Selected to participate in the 2014 All-District MSBOA Honors Band were sophomores Kyle Mack and Gabriel Harris, junior Alex Chapp, and senior Gary Hill. Along with other select students, they performed in a special concert on April 1.

DLS Teacher Publishes in Science Journal Mr. James DeHaan, one of our DLS Physics teachers, recently had an article published in the Journal of the Michigan Science Teachers Association. In the article, Mr. DeHaan describes an activity using ordinary magnets that illustrates how the practice of modeling can be challenging for students, and why modeling as a classroom practice is important.

Mr. DeHaan, a graduate of Utica Eisenhower who earned his degree in Physics at Oakland University, is also the DLS Science Olympiad Moderator.

Valentini Awarded Balgenorth Scholarship Senior Alex Valentini has been awarded the 2014 Balgenorth Scholarship.

The scholarship, formally named the Richard A. Balgenorth Lasallian Award for Higher Education, is in tribute to the memory of Mr. Balgenorth, ‘75, and his belief that De La Salle Collegiate plays a crucial role as a foundation for lifelong learning. The Award aims to financially assist a graduating De La Salle senior continue his education at a college or university.

Alex, who plans to major in Broadcasting and minor in Music at Adrian College, was presented the $1,000 award by Mrs. Kim Balgenorth.

Mrs. Balgenorth is the Administrative Assistant in the DLS Counseling Department.

Around De La Salle Swimmers Repeat as County Champs, Break Four School Records After repeating as Macomb County Champions in early February, the DLS Swimming and Diving Team turned its attention to qualifying swimmers for the State Finals. With swimmers qualified in 11 events, including diving, DLS had an outstanding showing at the 2014 Division 2 State Finals, earning 30 points and a 20th place finish. Seven Pilots qualified for the 2013 State meet.

Sophomore PJ Desmet finished 6th in the 100 backstroke, breaking his own school record (set earlier this year) with a time of 52.92, and earning All-State Honors. PJ is De La Salle’s first All-Stater in swimming since 1990.

At the state finals, the 400 free relay team broke the 1988 school record with a time of 3:17.42. Sophomore Mitch Livingston, Junior Kurtis White, Freshman Josh Hodges, and PJ finished 12th in the State Meet.

PJ’s 200 Individual Medley time at the CHSL meet was 1:59.12, breaking the 1987 record of Ron Yokubison (2:02.2).

All-Star Players

Senior football players Jared Wangler and Giovanni Rescigno have been selected to play in the 2014 Michigan High School Football Coaches Association All-Star game in June 2014. Previously an EastWest All-Star game, the game this year will be against All-Stars from the State of Ohio.

Coach Jim Singelyn notes that none of his swimmers at this year’s meet are graduating, including rookie diver Brandon Piwinski, a junior, who finished first at the CHSL meet, seventh in regionals, and 29th at the State Meet.

Around De La Salle Winter Sports Highlights Hockey

A young varsity hockey team played at Comerica Park during the Winter Classic over the Christmas holidays, beating Grosse Pointe North.

The team won the Regional Championship, making it to the Final Four in the Division 2 State Hockey Playoffs. The team lost the semi-final to Trenton, the Division 2 State Champions.

Basketball

The varsity basketball team won its game against Grand Rapids Christian at MSU’s Breslin Center in a Christmas tournament, and beat Detroit Douglass, a team which made the final four in the 2014 Class B State Tournament, in the Horatio Williams Freedom Classic.

The team also was Co-Champions of the CHSL Central Division.

Bowling

The varsity team just missed qualifying for the state team finals by a few pins. Junior Steve Palazzolo qualified for the state individual finals.

Wrestling

The wrestling team won the team District Championship, a repeat of their 2013 win. Seven qualified from the district individual tournament to regionals, a school record. Junior Jason Hertel qualified for the state individual finals.
