“It's A Great Day To Be A Pilot!”

In This Issue On The Cover

While our Advancement Department usually has lengthy conversations about the cover and what image or images to use, this issue required no debate. When John announced this past summer he was going to semi-retire and become part-time (see page 4), we all agreed that his photo should be on the cover. Thanks to Mr. Patrick Buschmole and Patrick Studios for providing this “head shot.”

From The President Dear De La Salle Family, Just yesterday I told my younger daughter that Christmas was only three months away. I am not sure what prompted me to tell her that; perhaps it was a simple glance at the date or perhaps it was the unusual heat that has gripped the Metro area recently that had me thinking of colder temps and Christmas. Whatever the reason for my comment, the reality of time passing so quickly has once again come to mind as I sit down to write this letter to you. Where did summer go? Where has September gone? Oh my… Perhaps, too, I have been wondering about the passage of time as we have begun celebrating John Monigold and the many years of dedicated service John has given to De La Salle Collegiate. To a countless number of you, John has been the consistent, guiding presence in the life of our beloved school for the past thirty plus years. To many of you, John is a classmate, friend and colleague. And for all of us at De La Salle Collegiate, John is an outstanding example of what it means to be a Lasallian. Whether it is the innumerable number of hours that John has devoted to the Christian Brothers’ Dinner, our annual student raffle and the many reunions and lunches he attends each year, John is always present with a kind smile, a warm and generous heart, and a deep devotion to De La Salle Collegiate. John is not leaving De La Salle Collegiate but simply transitioning to an “emeritus status” in our Advancement Office. Come the new year, John will be our “Director Emeritus of Alumni Relations.” John will be spearheading the student raffle and our Christian Brothers’ Dinner. Although John may not be as present for every hour of every day once the new year begins, his presence will be felt in ways too numerous to count. For certain whenever one proclaims “It’s a great day to be a Pilot,” we will automatically think of John with a smile and thank him for all he has done and will continue to do for our community. Thank you, John Monigold, on behalf of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the Board of Trustees, our Administration, Faculty, Staff, and the Students we are blessed to serve, and the many, many dedicated members of our alumni for the gift you are to De La Salle Collegiate. It is indeed a great day to be a Pilot, and it is an even better day to be a Pilot when we are blessed to be in your company. May God continue to keep you and your loved ones close to His sacred heart. Live, Jesus, in our hearts, forever!

Around De La Salle Monigold Announces Retirement Plans De La Salle Collegiate President John M. Knight announced in early July that John Monigold, ‘66, will become Alumni Relations Director Emeritus effective, January 1, 2018. Although John has thought of retiring, he has chosen to transition to part-time status, and will continue to be involved with De La Salle in many ways, including attending alumni events and reunions, and assisting with the Annual Raffle and the Christian Brothers’ Dinner. President Knight said, “John Monigold is a valuable member of our De La Salle community, and I am so pleased that rather than outright retirement, he has chosen to continue to remain involved. John’s Lasallian ‘charism’ comes through in all that he does.”

4

Since 2006, John has served in the Advancement Department as Alumni Relations Director. A long-time volunteer, he began working at De La Salle in 1987 as Advancement Director, and has been involved with the Christian Brothers’ Dinner since its inception in 1982. He was the Dinner Honoree in 2011, and in 2015, he was named a Benefactor of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (BFSC). John reflected, “A wise person once said, ‘Do something that you like and you won’t have to work a day in your life.’ That has truly been the case with me as I have been fortunate to have attended De La Salle Collegiate, and served as a volunteer and employee of the school for approximately fifty years. A long time indeed, but I have not regretted even one day. Although I will not be working as a full-time employee, I will still be involved. De La Salle will always be in my heart. Go Pilots!” Director of Advancement Chris Czarnik said, “John Monigold wanted to make this happen, and

John C. Monigold '66

the result is a great situation for him and for De La Salle. He will have the flexibility and time to enjoy the benefits he has earned from a lifetime of service to his alma mater. And yet he will continue to contribute in ways that have made him such a valuable part of De La Salle's mission, most importantly building and maintaining lasting, sincere relationships. John Monigold and De La Salle just go together. I am so happy for John, and know our colleagues share that sentiment.”

The total does not include scholarships students received for financial aid or for athletics. Counselor Mr. Anthony Albani notes this is the highest scholarship amount for De La Salle Collegiate graduates since the Counseling Department began tracking scholarships in 2006.

Around De La Salle Board of Trustees Names New Chair Mr. Gregory J. DeMars takes on the Chairman position on the De La Salle Board of Trustees for the 2017-2018 school year. He has served on the Board since July 2015. Greg replaces Dr. John Moore (‘75) who served on the Board for six years, the last three as Chair. John oversaw the transition of the School Presidency from a Christian Brother, Brother Thomas Lackey, ‘65, to a layperson, Mr. John Knight, and was also instrumental in the Strategic Planning process.

12

Now a retired partner from the firm of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, Greg is an adjunct professor at the University of Detroit Mercy Law School. The Wayne State University Law School sponsored Greg, and in March 2017 he was admitted to practice at the U.S. Supreme Court. Greg is honored to be the first chair who is not a De La Salle graduate. He says that the three issues facing the board are working to make sure there are sufficient funds for the school’s operations, working to increase enrollment, and working with the administration to ensure the school is aligned with its mission of teaching young men in the spirit of St. John Baptist de La Salle.

Although Greg is a graduate of Grosse Pointe North High School, his son, Greg DeMars (‘00), and nephews Dr. Peter Cracchiolo, DDS (‘03), Matthew Cracchiolo (‘05), Andrew Cracchiolo (‘07), and Mark Cracchiolo (‘10) are all graduates of De La Salle Collegiate. His daughters Sara (‘03) and Bethany (‘07) are graduates of Regina High School, where he served on the Board of Trustees, including President, from 20122014. At Regina he was also involved with the school’s capital campaign. Greg grew up in Lincoln Park, and attended St. Henry. His family moved to St. Clair Shores, where he graduated from St. Isaac Jogues. He moved to Grosse Pointe Woods in his teen years. Greg attended Wayne State University (WSU), on a football scholarship, and earned his undergraduate degree in Criminal Justice, and Master’s in Public Administration. He taught Criminal Justice before starting Law School at WSU. Greg clerked for Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice G. Mennen Williams. Currently, he volunteers at the Archdiocese of Detroit, assisting petitioners in preparing documents for the Marriage Tribunal. He and his wife wife of 37 years, Phyllis, a retired teacher at Our Lady Star of the Sea School, are

big supporters of Catholic education at all levels. “Both Regina and De La Salle have wonderful values, and I like that both have diverse socioeconomic populations. De La Salle did great things for my son and this is my way of giving back,” he says. Also joining the Board are: Brother Michael Andrejko is currently Director of the Brothers Community at Pittsburgh Central Catholic, his high school alma mater. Brother Michael is Director of College Contacts for the District of Eastern North America (DENA), replacing Brother Richard Galvin (a former teacher at De La Salle Collegiate) who is now Auxiliary Visitor for DENA, headquartered in Lincroft, NJ. . An experienced educator, Brother Michael was Principal at St. John’s, in Washington D.C for six years, and Vice-Principal at Philadelphia West Catholic for seven. He has also served on the Board of Trustees at Calvert Hall in Baltimore. Brother Michael says, “I have been to De La Salle a few times, and the kids are very friendly. The school has a great reputation.” Brother Joseph Jozwiak, ‘65 is now in his third year as President at CBA Syracuse, after serving as the school’s Principal since 2009. He is a past faculty

member and administrator at De La Salle, and served as the school’s first President 20012002. He has taught at various Christian Brothers’ schools around the United States, and served as Auxiliary Visitor for the DENA province. Brother Joe began high school at St. Joe’s, in Detroit, and transferred to De La Salle for his senior year when St. Joe’s closed in 1964.

Mr. Tony Lamerato, ‘02 is Director of Sales at WXYZ-TV and WMYD-TV20. He has served on the Christian Brothers’ Dinner Committee, and for the last year, on the Board’s Marketing Committee. He was named one of the 2015 DBusiness Magazine’s 30 in Their Thirties, and was also one of 40 named by Oakland County Executive Brooks Patterson for 2015’s 40 Under 40 Class.

Brother Joe brings his experiences as a student, teacher, and administrator at De La Salle to the Board, and says coming on the Board “is coming home.” He adds, “I’m hoping to bring all of my experiences in our ministry in education to the experience of being a board member.” He will be serving on the Finance Committee.

Tony is pleased to join the Board. He says, “I’m looking forward to playing a role in making sure De La Salle is around for the next 50 years and able to make a difference in a young man’s life like it did for me, while instilling Lasallian values that last a lifetime.”

President John M. Knight said, “De La Salle Collegiate is blessed to welcome our new trustees. Each one of our new trustees brings a deep commitment to Lasallian education. On behalf of our entire school community, I want to offer my heartfelt gratitude to John Moore for his exemplary service to our school. Thank you, John, for all you have done to strengthen our mission! Thank you, too, to Brothers Chris and Fran for their service to our school. You will be missed!” Leaving the board are Brother Christopher Belleman (‘77) and Brother Francis Eells.

He lives in Northville with his wife, Jenna, and two daughters.

Around De La Salle Pilot Hangar Receives Major Facelift The Pilot Hangar - the “brick and mortar” school store - had a major “facelift” this summer. Established in 2004, the Pilot Hangar carries various sweatshirts, t-shirts, hats, and more for purchase online or in the store. But after 13 years, Mrs. Anne Wiles, Vice President of Finance and Operations at De La Salle Collegiate, decided that it was time for a fresh look. Mr. Richard Artymovich (‘95), owner of EA Graphics, and his crew made layout suggestions and provided “sweat equity” in transforming the Pilot Hangar into a more inviting space. The Pilot Hangar is open mornings and afternoons and anyone may purchase clothing items online 24/7 at thepilothangar.com

14

Staffing the store are Mrs. Joann VanderPutten and Mrs. Christy Lietzow, assisted by students. In the 2016-2017 school year, three students volunteered to assist in the store. This year, students from Mrs. Aarran Meier’s Marketing/ Pilot Hangar class, a new piece of the Business curriculum, are learning the retail business in a more formalized setting. Mrs. Wiles plans to have the Pilot Hangar become the central spot for all types of sales transactions within the school, such as tickets for Homecoming and Prom.

Pilot Hangar Hours Mon., Wed., Fri. Tues. & Thurs. 7:30 - 9:30 am 2:00 - 3:30 pm

New Chaplain at De La Salle Welcome to our new De La Salle Collegiate Chaplain, Father Michael Suhy. Currently he is full-time pastor at St. Louise Parish in Warren. Father Michael was born in East Detroit, and is one of seven children. He was raised in Canton, and attended Catholic Central. He began college at the University of Michigan, but felt the vocational call. He transferred to Magdalen College in New Hampshire, and was invited to start a new

Benedictine community in Rome, Italy. He made his first vows for the new community in 2000. That same year, the young monastery moved to the birthplace of Saints Benedict and Scholastica in Nursia, Italy. He was ordained to the priesthood on February 10, 2005, the feast of St. Scholastica. In 2007, Father Michael became the pastor of a small Italian parish in the mountains that covered 18 villages and 75 churches. The passing of his mother in 2010 prompted Father Michael to

return to Detroit and begin a new chapter in his life. In April 2011, he began work in the Archdiocese of Detroit at Immaculate Conception (Lapeer), and began the process of becoming a priest in the Archdiocese. He served a year as Associate pastor at Our Lady of Good Counsel (Plymouth) before taking over the pastoral responsibilities at St. Louise in 2014. Father Michael will be saying Mass in the De La Salle Chapel on Wednesday mornings at 7:20 a.m., as well as conducting the monthly liturgies.

Lasallian News Touching Hearts in Haiti In late May 2017 De La Salle Collegiate Campus Minister Brian Barker and Brother Ken Kalinowski visited Haiti. This is Brother Ken’s account of their visit. I arrived in Haiti, with a group of eight Lasallian teachers from Eastern North America (two from Toronto, two from Baltimore, and two from Philadelphia) expecting the worst due to the reputation of the country, but not really realizing what we would see.

16

We left Metro Detroit with temperatures in the mid-50’s, and arrived in Haiti in mid-90’s heat and humidity. At the airport in Haiti, hundreds of people are waiting for each plane, looking for relatives, or hoping to help visitors to a car with the bags – expecting money to help them survive. One US dollar is worth 65 Haitian dollars, and everywhere we went – the preference was for American money.

We traveled down so-called roads, filled with sewage and smells that are indescribable. We arrived at the school, which is a fortress, and the outside of the school was shocking. However, once the main gate opened, we landed into a beautiful school courtyard filled with hundreds of children. The St. John Baptiste de la Salle School was built with donations from Lasallian schools in the United States and Ireland, after the terrible earthquake that hit the country. There are currently 550 students K-8, and a high school will open this Fall. The school is staffed by six Brothers: the oldest brother is 42 and four are in their 20’s. There are also lay partners who serve from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day. The school asks each family to contribute what they are able for

tuition; no child is turned away due to lack of funds once admitted. Space is limited, and classrooms are large. I walked into the 3rd grade classroom that had one teacher for 55 students! In the afternoon, we visited an orphanage with about 160 children, about a 1/2 mile away. Many of the orphans came after the earthquake; some are simply abandoned children. Close to 1/3 of the children in the orphanage are mentally or physically challenged. Their parents, unable to care for them, left them at the gate; government services do not exist in Haiti. In the nursery, one woman was caring for 16 children under the age of 2. I was mobbed

Lasallian News Tom Maxey Makes a Difference Touching Hearts, continued from previous page by children who simply wished to be picked up and hugged. We spent time with so many children. We found out, through our bilingual Canadian Lasallian partner, that many of the 160 orphans attend the four area schools. The De La Salle Brothers offer a certain number of spots for the orphans who attend for free.

In addition to visiting Cuba with his traveling baseball team this past summer, senior Tom Maxey spent a week in late June-July in Haiti with the HART team. HART - Haiti and Africa Relief Team (www.h-a-r-t.org), founded in 2009, is a group of dedicated medical professionals and others who make regular mission trips to Haiti and to Africa. Those involved are from St. Paul on the Lake (Grosse Pointe), St. Isidore, St. Philomena, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. The group seeks to feed, clothe, build, educate, repair, organize, and provide medical services during their week-long visits to needy areas. Tom said, “This was an incredibly eye-opening trip. My brother John (‘14) had gone two years ago, and told me I needed to go. I’m glad I did. John and my mother (Fran) and I were all part of the group. I learned a lot about medical care, but more importantly, I was really able to help people who are in need.”

There are great needs, too many to fathom – but if we won’t help – then who will? You may wonder, why did we go? It is our hope to bring our students there next year, as a Mission trip, for a few days of service and to see a world that is unlike our own – only an hour and a half plane ride from Florida’s shores. A Lasallian school is called, “to touch hearts” – their impact on our group was certainly that. Having spent years in Papua New Guinea, I thought I had seen it all. Believe me. Haiti was another eye opener. Let us pray for the people who suffer so greater than ourselves, and may “Jesus, Live in Our Hearts, forever!”

After the 1984 season, John was recruited by the Massillon High School (Ohio) program, a legendary powerhouse. John’s mentors, the late Bo Schembechler, coach at the University of Michigan, and George Perles, coach at Michigan State University, both urged him to at least go through the interview, which they saw as a stepping stone in John’s fulfillment of a dream to coach at the college level.

taurant in Mt. Clemens just before Labor Day.

John spent three years at Massillon, which became the first high school in the nation to win 600 games. He then moved to Florida, fulfilling his dream of coaching at the college level, serving as defensive coordinator at Bethune-Cookman University under Hall of Famer Larry Little. He returned to the high school ranks, turning around programs at New Smyrna and Mainland High Schools.

Gary Buslepp, who is now on the DLS Faculty parttime in the Academic Support program, has fond memories of John.

He underwent double bypass surgery in 2008, and within four months was back to coaching full-time. John decided to educate and inspire a broad audience of coaches and players and created a series of inspirational DVD’s, available through Amazon. Now retired, John continues to be involved with football, and has been a motivational speaker at camps conducted by Alabama coach Nick Saban and Ohio

John has many memories of his time at De La Salle, particularly the team that beat Brother Rice in 1984 which had won 28 straight games. “Every team knew they were at De La Salle for an education. My best memories are of how they conducted themselves when they won, and when they got defeated, but most importantly their dedication. I am proud of who they are.”

“I came to De La Salle in the Fall of 1977, when Austin High School closed, the same year as Mike Szatkowski, who was fresh out of college. We both worked in the football program and I recall John’s tireless work ethic in preparing our teams for games. No one outworked him. As a football staff, we burned the midnight oil preparing for each game. I must admit that I dozed off during a couple of film sessions around 1 a.m. with classes the next day. I recall John saying ‘Becoming the best at anything in life does not happen by accident.’ I thoroughly enjoyed learning from John. His relentless approach to being the best rubbed off on all the players he coached and the coaches he mentored.”

Ways To Support De La Salle Collegiate Lasallian Fund – Annual Giving

Annual Giving is the highest charitable priority for De La Salle. It provides critical and immediate support for students and is essential to bridge the gap between tuition revenue and the actual cost of educating a student. Unrestricted gifts are the greatest need. Donors may also choose to direct their gift. Tuition assistance is a particularly important area of support, as it represents the De La Salle tradition of keeping Catholic education affordable.

The Brothers’ Table

This fund helps provide necessary food for needful students identified through a detailed application process. There is a $50,000 goal for The Brothers Table Fund this school year. Funds raised in excess of this goal will be utilized for tuition assistance.

Endowment

Endowed Scholarship Funds are crucial to the future of De La Salle. Once established, the principle of the account is invested as part of the De La Salle endowment and the interest generated is utilized annually to benefit students. Endowed Scholarships are an especially meaningful way to honor a person as the fund becomes a permanent part of the school and a perpetual tribute to that person.

Planned Gifts

The Brother George Synan Society honors those that have included De La Salle in their estate plan. These arrangements insure the future of De La Salle and can often provide a tax advantage for families as they plan their estates.

Some philanthropic notes of opportunity for the coming year:

• Giving stocks or other securities. Donors are often able to receive the full deductible value of appreciated shares donated, while potentially avoiding capital gains taxes. • Contributions directly from your IRA. If you are 701/2 or older, you may be able to make a distribution directly from your IRA and enjoy significant tax benefits while supporting De La Salle. • Gifts of Life Insurance Policies. If you have a policy that is no longer needed and don’t wish to carry on with the premiums, consider transferring it to De La Salle. Advancement can help with more information on the potential benefits.

The De La Salle Advancement Department is available to consult with you or your advisors. Contact us at 586.778.3356 for more information. To make a gift to De La Salle:

• Online - go to www.delasallehs.com and click on Donate in the top menu, or to www.ThePilotHangar.com and click on Make A Donation on the right side. • By Mail - use the enclosed donation envelope. • By Phone - call the Advancement Office and we'll be happy to assist you.

Lasallian Fund Gifts - July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017

Why give to the Lasallian Fund? The De La Salle Collegiate Annual Fund is called the Lasallian Fund, because the money raised every year directly supports our Lasallian Mission of providing a quality Catholic education to all students. The price of a great education is always higher than we charge for tuition, but with the generosity of our alumni, parents, and friends, we are able to provide a formative scholastic experience to so many young men. If you are already a donor, we can’t say it enough; thank you for your support. If you have never donated to DLS, please consider doing so today with the envelope provided. Your gift can make a difference in the life of a young man. Philanthropy is one of the things that makes De La Salle exceptional - it’s what Pilots do!

The Brothers’ Table A special Thank You goes out to the donors to The Brothers’ Table Annual Fund. During the 2016-2017 school year, 52 students were assisted by The Brothers’ Table, a charitable effort to provide necessary food for qualified students. The effort continues this school year, so that every student has something to eat during the school day. As President Emeritus Brother Bob Carnaghi said at the time of the program’s inception in the Fall of 2016, “It’s important to know that these situations have always been present at De La Salle, and they continue today.” People wishing to contribute to The Brothers’ Table may do so online at thepilothangar.com or through the Lasallian Fund by designating their gift to be directed to The Brothers’ Table. For more information, please contact the DLS Advancement Office at 586.778.3356.

Admissions News Summer Camps Hit Another Milestone! This summer we continued to break our own records. We had over 700 students participate in our summer camps. This is nearly 100 kids more than the previous year. It is another great example of the great demand for a Lasallian education here in Metro Detroit. Mr. Kevin Fitzhenry, Associate Director of Admissions and Summer Camps Coordinator, believes that next summer we will continue to break records with even more exciting camps and opportunities for young people to stay involved at De La Salle Collegiate over the summer months. To that end, we are really excited about some upcoming opportunities that are featured throughout this edition of The Collegiate. They are: • Future Pilot Appreciation Night - October 6th • Open House - November 5th

• Coffee Talks - The first Wednesday of each month • Pilot for a Day Visits - Any day school is in session • School Tours - any day school is in session We believe the best way for a family to learn about the value of a De La Salle Collegiate education is by visiting campus and exploring if for themselves. All of the events listed are completely free and open to any prospective families. The only exception is the Pilot for a Day visit where students do need to be in 7th or 8th grade. If families have any questions, we encourage them to contact the Admissions Office. Bill Burkhardt, Kevin Fitzhenry, and Andrea Mason, are eager to help families with any questions they have. We can be reached at 586-541-6220 or admissions@delasallehs.com.

Athletic News New Coach for Hockey De La Salle Collegiate is pleased to announce the hiring of Sean Clark as the next leader of the Pilots’ ice hockey program. Clark takes over from Craig Staskowski, who resigned in March after leading the Pilots to a MHSAA Division 3 state championship in his first year. Over the past three seasons, Clark has been an associate coach for the Oakland Junior Grizzlies, most recently at the U18 AAA level. In a way, Clark will be returning to De La Salle. In 2013, he coached several De La Salle students to a fall league championship as part of the Eastside Pilots organization. 42

A graduate of Brother Rice High School (‘99), Sean is a native of Royal Oak. He played a season for the Warriors before moving on to play college hockey for the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire where he was a four-year

starter and was twice named team captain of the BluGolds. In addition to being named AllWIAC Academic three times, Clark earned a bachelor's degree in Operations and Material Management with a certificate in Leadership. After graduation, Clark had a short stint with the Bakersfield (CA) Condors of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Since retiring from professional hockey, Sean has worked as a successful coach, general manager and director of player development in the North American Hockey League (NAHL). In addition, Clark has held posts as the director of scouting for the Omaha Lancers (USHL) and was the assistant director of central scouting for the USHL for two years. As a coach of the Michigan Jaguars (NAHL), his team captured the U18 Tier II National Championship.

In his time with the Oakland Junior Grizzlies, Sean has a proven track record of effectively teaching situational hockey, developing individual skills and evaluation of talent. In fact, his U18 team this year finished ranked 3rd nationally. During his tenure with the Grizzlies, ten players earned NCAA Division 1 scholarships. “Sean not only understands the game from a tactical standpoint and will move our program forward, but his work in scouting and talent development will give our players a clear roadmap to understanding what it takes to succeed at the next level. Most of all, his background in Catholic education closely aligns with the mission and values of the Collegiate,” stated Mike Watson, Director of Athletics.

Coach Mckay Inducted to Macomb HOF Congratulations to De La Salle Collegiate Varsity Golf Coach Doug McKay, inducted in May 2017 to the Macomb County Coaches Hall of Fame. McKay has previously been inducted into the CHSL Hall of Fame (2012). McKay began his career at De La Salle in 1994. His teams have dominated the Macomb County Championships, and he has sent teams

or individuals to the state finals nearly every year. While McKay has a lengthy record of wins, his most memorable moments are “when I run into players from past years who want to talk about how much DLS golf meant to them and how they have taken what they have learned into their current professions.”

Athletic News Special Senior Athletic Awards Congratulations to the following graduates of the Class of 2017 on being named recipients of these special athletic awards: (all quotes from Director of Athletics Mr. Mike Watson). "Several schools may say that selecting their award winners is difficult. However, I've never been a part of a school with more outstanding student-athletes as De La Salle Collegiate. Being an outstanding athlete, student or leader is not a surprise, but a byproduct of work, dedication, and commitment here. Our special award winners set the pace for our underclassmen each year, and 2017 was no different. I look forward to watching the Class of 2018 and beyond compete to attempt to fill the shoes of those who preceded them."

finish and was a contributing member of the 2016 state runner-up squad. What many may not see is that this Eagle Scout did all this and maintained a GPA over 4.0 while going through rigorous two-a-day practices."

Allen Stritzinger

Br. Kevin Gilhooly Athlete of the Year Jacob Huttenlocher Award: Allen Stritzinger Presented to a student-athlete who has excelled in one or more sports. "A two-way performer in football, Allen is known for his versatility and athleticism. He can play running back or wideout, safety, corner or specialist. Allen's football skill earned him a scholarship to Syracuse, but I was most impressed with his desire to simply be the best athlete he could be. He became a respected Brendan Kraiza contributor on the varsity basketball team because of his tenacity and desire. He rounded out his senior campaign by being one of the most dominant hurdlers in Michigan, earning all-state honors in both the low and high hurdles." Tony DeSantis Man of the Year Award: Jacob Huttenlocher Presented to a student athlete who is an allaround student, and who has worked hard in and out of the classroom. "The ideals that defined Coach DeSantis are alive in Jake Huttenlocher today. It's easy to see that Jake is one of the finest swimmers in school history. He's earned all-state status five times and was the Macomb County swimmer of the year this past season. As a captain, he helped lead the Pilots to a top-five state

Brother Robert Carnaghi Lasallian Spirit Award: Brendan Kraiza Present to a student who is a dedicated supporter of his fellow Pilots. "If you are looking for a student who exudes DLS pride and spirit, look no further than Brendan Kraiza. You can't miss him in the BroZone not just because of his size, but because he's the loudest and most-spirited as well. You could see the same support at football, hockey, and basketball games as well as swim meets and baseball games. If the Pilots were competing, Brendan Kraiza was there." DLS Scholar Athlete Award: Brendan Sulkowski Presented to a student-athlete who has excelled in the classroom and in his sport. "I can't think of anyone better to receive the scholar-athlete award than Brendan Sulkowski. Brendan is clearly one of the most outstanding students in the school academically. He is an outstanding track athlete in addition to his outstanding work in Campus Ministry."

DLS Distinguished Athlete Award: Gregory Pine Presented to a student athlete who has excelled in his sport. "Greg Pine epitomizes what it means to be a Pilot. Not only did he extend his leadership to the ice to help the varsity win a state championship, he also helped lead the lacrosse team to Brendan Sulkowski a Regional title, scoring multiple goals in the championship. Beyond his athletic prowess and leadership abilities, Greg is an absolute standout in the classroom. I look forward to following his career." Coaches and staff members nominate young men for each award; a committee of administrators, staff, and coaches then reviews the nominations. Gregory Pine

Alumni Spotlight Bob Maxey, Class of 1985 Bob Maxey, ‘85, had a summer to remember. He spent a week in Havana, Cuba, with his family, watching his son Tom play baseball, and visiting historical sites in the area. The trip was first proposed last winter by Bob’s brotherin-law, who coaches the travel team Bob has managed for several years. Some American teams have visited Cuba in the last year or two, but none from Michigan. The two began checking the possibilities, contacting travel agents, the state’s United States Senators, the U.S. State Department. The entire team and their families met at the Maxey home in Grosse Pointe Woods in March - boys from De La Salle Collegiate, University of Detroit High School, and Grosse Pointe South. All the families wanted to go. So, on August 1, the group flew to Miami, and then on to Cuba for a cultural visit. They brought luggage - and several pieces of baseball equipment - mitts, bats, helmets - items that would be left behind for the Cuban Baseball Federation officials to distribute after the Americans departed. 44

Bob is no stranger to baseball teams traveling. In 2013, his son Tom, now a senior at De La Salle, was part of the Grosse Pointe Woods Shores Little League team that won the Great Lakes Regional Championship and headed to Williamsport, PA. In fact, he’s managed or coached baseball and hockey with his sons for years. All four of his sons have attended De La Salle. Rob graduated in 2012, attended Michigan State University, and is now working in Las Vegas. Bob says the experience is good training for Bob in employee management skills. John (‘14) is majoring in Computer Engineering at the University of Michigan, while Scott (‘15) is at Michigan State studying Mechanical Engineering. Tom is a current senior. And daughter Sydney is a freshman at Regina. All of the Maxey children attended Our Lady Star of the Sea. Bob himself also attended Catholic schools, graduating from St. Anne in Warren, and then spending his freshman year at Bishop Foley, where his older sister Sherry was already a student. When De La Salle moved from Detroit to Warren in 1982, however, Bob transferred, graduating in 1985. He then

Bob Maxey and his son, Tom '18.

headed to the University of Michigan to major in Economics. Although Bob’s father started his Lincoln dealership on Mack near Cadieux in Detroit in 1972, Bob says there was never any pressure to join the family business. He spent summers working at the dealership - washing cars, sweeping floors, learning how to change oil. But after college, he became a salesman at the Detroit dealership. The dealership has grown, and in 2003, Bob opened a downtown Detroit location, aiming to service cars for downtown workers, providing shuttle service and loaners to customers. In 2014, a dealer in Howell offered them the opportunity to take over his business. Bob, along with his brother Mike, ‘90 and sister Sherry, mother of Matthew Held ‘16, decided that Howell offered the opportunity to expand into a growing area. With his knowledge of cars, Bob enjoyed Havana, seeing the old cars, but notes that Havana, despite its two million plus population, has no traffic jams. He says the buildings are old, but well-maintained. But most of all, Bob was impressed with the friendliness of the Cubans they encountered on the streets and in restaurants, and of the boys they met - an All-Star team in Havana

Alumni Spotlight of 15 year olds. “They practice six hours a day,” says Bob. “And they have incredible skills. But they don’t have equipment - they had two bats for the whole team. Their helmets have no padding. It broke my heart that we couldn’t give them the equipment right away.” The teams played each day, and met with Cuban stars - the “Derek Jeters, and the Justin Verlanders of Cuba.” Bob says the boys knew about American baseball from ESPN. The teens showed each other pictures on their phones, and the American teens encountered the reality of internet access in Cuba - limited to five minutes, expensive, and slow. “Our boys really learned that they have it so much better at home in the United States,” says Bob. The trip included a visit to the Presidential Palace, now a museum, where the bullet holes from the 1959 Revolution are still in the walls.

doctors make only $40-$50 a month. But Cuba has free education and more than 40 colleges and universities. Its people are highly literate. Cab drivers are making ten times more than a doctor, and can speak English. A lot has to happen for tourism to work. There are no drugstores. No department stores. Only a few restaurants are owner-operated. The 1948 cars are worth $30,000. Everything is expensive.” Bob has been supportive of De La Salle, and recognizes its impact on his life, and the lives of his sons. “I was extremely well-prepared for college. But De La Salle does more than that. You learn to do what is right, to look out for others, to have compassion for people.” Although the local public high school is a stone’s throw from his home, Bob and his wife of 24 years have chosen to send their children to Catholic schools. “I wanted the

boys to be in a Christian environment. De La Salle gives you something that the public schools don’t give - a sense of brotherhood with other boys. I didn’t realize it when I was in high school how the motto ‘Builders of Boys, Makers of Men’ is carried out. My sons would come home and talk about how they would walk by a Brother, and if one of the boys didn’t say hello, he would be called out. It’s important for young men to learn how to act with other people and be professional. I don’t think they’d get that elsewhere. I believe in what De La Salle is doing. I believe in the discipline. The structure. The regimen.” To his fellow alumni Bob says, “De La Salle gives the best academic experience. The best. There is a personal and faith experience that they can get out of the school whether Catholic or Christian or any religion.”

He estimates that the people under age 60, who have no recollection of the way Cuba was before Castro’s revolution in 1959, are eager for more involvement with the United States. “I understand the appeal of Castro at the time. 75% of the land was owned by 8% of the population, and they were eager for change.” Bob has no plans to open a dealership in Cuba, however. “All dealerships are owned by the government.” He would like to return to Cuba, and says its people are ready for tourism. “The average Cuban makes only $25 a month, while

The memorial wall was established by DLS Principal, Mr. Steve Stewart, himself a U.S. Army veteran. There are two eligibility categories: • Honorably Discharged Veterans will have their names permanently added to the wall. • Currently serving service members, both active and reserve components, will have their names added to the wall for one year, renewable upon annual notification.
