Our new school year has not only brought in a freshman class, the Class of 2019, with over 200 students. De La Salle also welcomes our new President, Mr. John Knight, the first lay President of DLS. Please take the time to read through this issue, particularly the Conversation with Br. Dennis Malloy, on pages 4 and 5, about the relationship between the Brothers of the Christian Schools and De La Salle. We also have several pictures on pages 26 and 27 with Mr. Knight during these first two weeks of classes.

From The President Dear De La Salle Family,

I am blessed and honored to be called to serve our community as President.

Before I tell you a little bit about who I am, I want to take a moment to offer a word of gratitude to Br. Tom Lackey ’65. Brother Tom has served his alma mater well over these past four years. Thank you, Brother Tom, for all you have done for our school. I follow in Br. Tom’s footsteps as the first layman to serve our school as President. While that distinction may strike some as unusual, it really is not that atypical for Lasallian education. As you may know, St. John Baptist de La Salle’s first companions were laymen.

As for my background, I am like so many of our young men who walk the halls each day at DLS. I come from a working class family in Toledo, Ohio. I am a product of Catholic education and a former Jesuit seminarian. I am married and the father of two teen-age daughters. My mom and dad introduced me to the faith at an early age. I have grown to love the Gospel and feel a deep connection to all things Lasallian. My heart has been touched many times over these past months since my appointment as President by the kindness of the Brothers and their lay partners. My heart rejoices at the opportunity God has given me to be of service to this marvelous school community.

A few short weeks ago, I spent two days in Lincroft, NJ, at the “home office” of the Brothers of the Christian Schools for the District of Eastern North America along with six other new Chief Administrative Officers. During our time together, we heard from the Brother Visitor, Br. Dennis Malloy, FSC. Br. Dennis is a wonderful man who clearly loves the Institute (of the Christian Brothers) and the Church. In one session with us Br. Dennis made it clear that we are a Lasallian ministry if we remain focused on serving those at the margins of society and always bring the Gospel to those we serve. This is our mission at DLS and it is the mission that the Brothers and their lay partners have carried out since 1926.

I commit to you this day that each one of us at DLS are proud of our Lasallian heritage, and we will work hard each and every day to remain focused on our work – to care for those who are at the margins of society and to bring the Gospel message of Jesus Christ to our students and our entire community. I look forward to walking this journey with you.

A Conversation With...

Brother Dennis Malloy is the “Brother Visitor” or Provincial of DENA, the District of Eastern North America.

Lasallian identity do not depend upon Brothers being present in the schools.

The Board of Trustees holds your Catholic nature and Lasallian spirit in trust for the Christian Brothers and for De La Salle. The President, who the Board hires and the Brothers approves, is hired to be the Mission or Apostolic leader of the school and to actively engage others in our Lasallian Catholic mission.

Earlier this year, you visited De La Salle Collegiate. What are your impressions of De La Salle?

This was my second or third official visit. I visit each ministry at least once every three years and our Auxiliary Visitor Brother Charles Kitson visits in the interim years. De La Salle is a wonderful school, with a very diverse student population.

I first visited three years ago, just before Christmas, and saw a variety of activities taking place. There was an evening music program, a rich offering of athletics, art programs, worship. DLS is a very vibrant, very balanced school. DLS has made something for all young people to discover their gifts whatever they are.

What does it mean to be a Lasallian Catholic school?

A school can only be Catholic through the local bishop or religious institute. De La Salle is Catholic and Lasallian because it is part of the worldwide Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Your Catholic nature and

In our schools, the poor and the working class are at the heart of our mission. In the last 25 years, we have had a tremendous change in the socio-economic diversity of our schools, and now have students from different backgrounds. They get to know one another as brothers.

Our mission is to give our students an excellent education and to develop in our students a heart for justice and a very personal relationship with God. Not unlike other schools, all Catholic education costs money.

Recently, our Mission Assembly, which meets every three to four years, looked at how we keep our Lasallian schools strong, with a human and Christian education, starting with the poor and working class. An authentic Lasallian Catholic education is affordable to families. There’s definitely a struggle all the time to do this.

It is particularly his role to see that ministries are authentic to the Lasallian charism and mission “to give a human and Christian Education to the young, especially the poor, according to the ministry which the Church has entrusted to it.”

Br. Dennis Malloy The Brothers have used the term “Together and By Association.” What does that mean?

St. John Baptist de La Salle himself recognized that the Brothers cannot do this alone. The early Brothers, with their limited resources, limited knowledge, and no technology transformed French education in their day with little more than “ingenuity, innovation, and collaboration with others.”

Our colleagues are teachers and researchers; counselors and social workers; administrators, and IT professionals; youthcare workers, court representatives and community outreach workers; nurses and development professionals; secretaries, finance and business officers, facilities managers, cooks and coaches and, of course, chief administrators, serving 28,000 students. It means that we work together at our local ministry level but also by association with all Lasallian ministries within our District of Eastern North America (DENA), the larger Region of North America, the worldwide Institute and the universal Church. We are always a part of something larger than ourselves.

Our collective commitment to the poor, working, and middle classes is unrivaled and sustained through the creative and heroic efforts of our trustees, presidents, and benefactors.

What’s the role of the Board of Trustees in carrying out the Lasallian Mission?

The Institute, through the District of Eastern North America (DENA), is responsible, along with the Board of Trustees, and the President, to carry out the Mission of St. John Baptist De La Salle, and to maintain the Catholic Lasallian identity of the school.

DLS is blessed to have a board with a chair, Dr. John Moore, who “gets” the Lasallian Catholic mission and is a missiondriven leader.

Several schools in the DENA district have lay presidents.

How do the Brothers view the current trend of appointing lay partners to chief administrator positions?

In the last 25 years, we’ve offered formation programs to grow the teachers, counselors, and administrators in our schools into positions of mission leadership. This is a

The New York District, which is the District which originally staffed De La Salle, and for many years St. Joseph High School, merged in September 2009 with the Baltimore and Long Island/New England Districts to form DENA. wonderful moment in the life of the Church. We’re seeing the fruits of Vatican II, the recognition that the church’s mission is the shared responsibility of all of the baptized, “The People of God,” in the words of Vatican, not just the responsibility of priests and religious.

We have partners in our schools who are as passionate about Lasallian education as the Brothers. The only difference is vows.

You’ve met our new President, John Knight?

DLS is blessed to have John Knight as President of DLS. He has a long history of Catholic education. I think he’s a good fit, the right person at the right moment. I couldn’t be happier or more comfortable with his leadership.

The President has to be the faith leader of the community.

Every decision needs to be based on the mission and giving a Christian education to young people.

It doesn’t matter if you are Lasallian or Jesuit or Franciscan. At the end of the day, one mission of the church is to fulfill God’s Mission.

Lasallian News Benefaction Honor Bestowed on Two in June Ceremony In recognition of their years of dedicated support to the Brothers of De La Salle Collegiate High School, Letters of Benefaction were bestowed on John Monigold (‘66) and Gino Paliaroli (SJ ‘55), at a Mass and Ceremony at De La Salle on May 30, 2015.

The selection of John and Gino was approved by the Provincial of the District of Eastern North America (DENA), Br. Dennis Malloy, FSC. From the earliest days of its foundation more than 300 years ago, the Brothers of the Christian Schools have been conscious of their dependence on the generosity of collaborators in achieving the apostolic purposes for which the Brothers exist.

The designation as a Benefactor of the Institute is an honor granted by the Brothers to those who have given support to an individual school or community.

Dr. Stephen D’Addario, MD, John Monigold, Gino Paliaroli, Dr. Raymond Skowronski, DDS, and Bill Edwards. Drs. D’Addario and Skowronski were benefacted in 2014; Bill was benefacted in 1995.

Brother Robert Carnaghi, President Emeritus of De La Salle, said, “The ongoing ministry of the Brothers is possible because of the support of such men like Steve, John, Gino, Ray, and Bill. We couldn’t do it without them.

Their loyalty and love for the Lasallian Mission impels the Brothers to honor them in a special way.”

The Monigold Family is truly a Lasallian Family. John Monigold (‘66) - along with his father Leonard (‘37), and John’s sons John (‘94), Nicholas (‘98), and Stephen (‘00) - has been loyal and supportive of the Brothers’ Mission.

Since 1987, John has been the Director of Alumni, running the Annual Student Raffle and the Christian Brothers’ Dinner, key events in raising millions of dollars toward fulfilling our Lasallian Mission. John was

the 2011 Christian Brothers’ Dinner Honoree. His personal example and spiritual lifestyle have taught our students what it means to be a true Pilot.

Gino Paliaroli is a 1955 graduate of St. Joseph’s High School, and a classmate of Br. Patrick McNally, FSC. Gino’s outgoing personality helped to “unify the separate loyalties” between the alumni of St. Joe’s, the Bluejays, and De La Salle, the Pilots. Gino served as Treasurer of the Board of Trustees for six years, and continues to work with the Finance Committee.

His time, talent, and treasure are evidence of this understanding of the meaning “Association for the Service of the Poor.”

Because of his support of the Brothers’ Mission, Gino was the 2013 Honoree of the Christian Brothers’ Dinner.

Benefactors use the designation BFSC to identify them as Benefactors of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

Lasallian News Brother Joseph Jozwiak Celebrates 50 Years as a Christian Brother Brother Joseph Jozwiak, Class of 1965, recently celebrated his 50th Anniversary as a Christian Brother. He celebrated with family and friends with a Mass at De La Salle, followed by a luncheon, on August 23.

Since 2009, Br. Joe has been at Christian Brothers Academy, in Syracuse, NY. He has spent the last six years as Principal, becoming the school’s first President as of July 1, 2015.

The native Detroiter, who came to De La Salle following the closing of St. Joseph’s High School in 1964, entered the Brothers’ postulancy at Barrytown, NY, in July 1965. After taking his first vows in 1966, he studied at Hillsdale Hall and the Catholic University of America.

His first teaching assignment was at La Salle School, in Albany, NY, as a teacher and child care worker.

In 1974, Br. Joe began two years of graduate studies at California Lutheran University. Following these studies, he became a school counselor and consultant for Catholic schools in the Diocese of Orange, in California. Br. Joe returned to Albany in 1977 as Director of Development and

Staff Training, followed by a year as Vocation Director of the New York District.

Br. Joe began his association with De La Salle in 1983, as a teacher and counselor, and then as Vice-Principal from 1985-1990.

Then came a five-year assignment with the Christian Brothers Conference, headquartered in Romeoville, IL, as Secretary for Regional Formation.

In 1994, Br. Joe returned to Warren, as Principal and Director of the Brothers’ House. In 2001, he became the school’s first President.

After 35 years as a Brother, Br. Joe had his first Sabbatical during the 2002-03 school year in Rome, Italy.

Then, in 2003, he headed to the Bronx, NY, living at Manhattan College, and traveling throughout the District as Vocation Director. In 2005, he became Associate Visitor for Formation, and was headquartered at the Brothers’ Provincialate in Lincroft, NJ.

Father Dave Heney (Archdiocese of Los Angeles) joined with Brothers Patrick McNally, Robert Deary, Joseph Jozwiak, Richard Galvin, Robert Carnaghi, and David Deradoorian to celebrate Brother Joe Jozwiak’s 50th anniversary as a Brother of the Christian Schools.

Lasallian News Brothers Invite Interested Students to Vocation Program Entering religious life is a process that takes several years. For the Brothers of the Christian Schools, no young man is accepted without having completed at least two years of college and at least one year in the Brothers’ “Contact Program.”

Many young men join the Program and find that there is a greater level of engagement than the degree of their interest and decide to withdraw from the Program.

For others, the Program allows for an incremental search for a vocation that can lead to an application to formally join the Brothers, or the choice of a Br. Francis chats with students in the Class of 2015 during priestly or other lay vocation. a Fall 2014 visit to DLS. This period can last from two to four years, depending on the Contact.

Board News New Board Members Bring Varied Experience The new academic year brings the annual transition of DLS Board of Trustee members.

Joining the Board for three-year terms that began on July 1, 2015, are Mr. Eric Carver, Mr. Gregory J. DeMars, Mrs. Diane Peklo, and Dr. Raymond Skowronski, Jr., DDS. Board Chair Dr. John Moore (‘75) says, “I am very pleased to welcome them as Board members. They bring a wealth of valuable experience to the Board which will be instrumental in helping DLS to achieve its ongoing mission of transforming boys into men within the context of a Catholic educational environment.”

Dr. Moore also said, “But, while their professional backgrounds and experiences are impressive, what has me most excited is that each of these people embody the special nature of our Lasallian charism. Eric and Ray are DLS graduates. Greg, Diane, and Ray are proud parents of DLS graduates. Consequently, all four of these individuals know what a special place De La Salle is and what an important impact it can have on our students, our staff and the greater community around us.”

Departing the Board due to the expiration of their terms are Br. Thomas Lackey, FSC, Mr. Frank Erace, Mr. Peter Lucido, and Mrs. Jan Thomas. De La Salle thanks them for their service to the Board and to our DLS community.

About the New Board Members Eric Carver (‘80) is an attorney with the firm of Dykema Gossett.

Mr. Gregory J. Demars is a past parent, whose son Gregory graduated in 2000. Mr. DeMars also has four nephews who are De La Salle graduates: Peter Cracchiolo (‘03), Matthew Cracchiolo (‘05), Andrew Cracchiolo (‘07), and Mark Cracchiolo (‘10). Mr. DeMars is an attorney and partner in the Honigman Law firm.

Diane Peklo is a Past President of the Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary (CBA), and the mother of three DLS alumni: Drew (‘05), Shawn (‘07), and Justin (‘10). Diane has a strong commitment to faith-based education. She works at Pro-Tech Lighting in Troy.

Dr. Raymond Skowronski Jr., BFSC (‘74) rejoins the De La Salle Board. The 2012 Christian Brothers’ Dinner Honoree previously served on the Board, and is a past parent. His son Raymond Skowronski III is a 2015 graduate. Dr. Skowronski’s dental practice is in Sterling Heights.

Making a Difference Stan Wegrzynowicz, Class of 1954 Stan Wegrzynowicz has worn many hats since his days at De La Salle.

An All-State runner at DLS, he ran track at the University of Notre Dame, after the Irish football coach, noting Stan’s 134 lbs., sent him to see the cross-country coach. “I was Rudy before there was Rudy,” Stan laughs.

He spent several years teaching in various Catholic schools, including De La Salle in 1958-59. He has coached football and basketball, and still coaches track, most recently the girl hurdlers at Cousino High School.

Stan took over the Business Operations for the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores in the early 1980’s. When he left in the late 90’s, he was handling 19 retail outlets.

Stan became the Director of Camp Ozanam for the St. Vincent de Paul Society in 1973, and managed the camp in the Port Huron area for 15 years. In those days, the Camp, along with its sister camp, Camp Stapleton, managed by various religious orders, accommodated 1900 boys and girls from low-income families, ages 8 - 14, over two months in the summer.

Each year the St. Vincent de Paul Society holds a reunion Sunday at Camp Ozanam for past counselors and benefactors. After attending one of these reunions a few years ago, Stan decided to become re- involved.

And so Stan is now wearing yet another hat, helping to raise funds for

Camp Ozanam. This past summer, the camp hosted approximately 500 children, four groups of boys and girls for 4.5 days, rather than the two-week stays of years past.

He has fond memories of the camp and its impact on children.

“One boy said, ‘I can drink all the white milk I want.’ Another boy started to come to camp when he was 7, and was our most difficult camper.

Over seven years, the staff refused to send him home, wanting to help him mature. As he got older, he became a camp counselor. He attended my wife’s funeral earlier this year.”

Stan also says the kids loved the camp.

“Approximately ten, typically from dysfunctional homes, would run away and hide, saying they didn’t want to go home.”

Stan is working with Cyndi Popp, a past DLS parent and a current member of the DLS Board of Trustees. She was

Nick Lemanski (‘11) and Cyndi Popp. Nick worked as a Counselor at Camp Ozanam this summer. a Camp Counselor during high school, and became the Program Director during college. “I made lifelong friends at the camp,” she said.

Cyndi is also a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and serves on the Camp Committee.

Stan and Cyndi have met with Gleaners and mid-Michigan food banks, seeking help in reducing food costs, although Stan says they have limitations on what they can do to help.

Cyndi says Stan is “dropping bugs in people’s ears” to help get funding for

Br. Bob Carnaghi the camp, and still rolls up his sleeves to see what can be done. “He brought in one of his friends, a facilities manager, to develop a priority list of things needing repair - roofs, windows, and so on.”

Stan would like to see major donors step forward, but is also concerned with finding boosters. “Back in the 70’s, the President of the St. Vincent De Paul Society was Bartholomew Seymour, the Alfred Taubman of his day. Seymour would write the check to cover the camp’s bills. When he died, there was no one wealthy to replace him. We need more people to step up. It would be wonderful to have Camp Stapleton re-opened for girls.”

Although Camp Stapleton closed several years ago, the site, like Camp Ozanam, is available for rentals.

Br. Bob Carnaghi, FSC, President Emeritus of De La Salle, fondly remembers Camp Ozanam.

“I was fortunate to be chosen to attend Camp Ozanam in my youth. What a wonderful experience for me and what a great help to my parents who were struggling to make ends meet after the Depression.”

He adds, “This experience remains with me - OZ, OZ, ANAM, it is the bestest camp that am!”

Stan is passionate about helping the camp. “I encountered another camper about six months ago, who told me, ‘If it wasn’t for my relationship with the St. Vincent de Paul Society and my experience at Camp Ozanam, I don’t think I’d be alive today.’

“It was refreshing to me to see the beauty of the relationship between various ethnic groups and the diversity in the cabins,” said Stan. “It’s a wonderful thing for human relationships. To me, that was the most significant thing besides giving kids a chance.”

Whatever Happened To...

Mr. Dennis Hafeli English Teacher 1998-00 Counselor 2000-04

It’s said, “Cats have nine lives.”

Dennis Hafeli, former English teacher and Counselor at DLS, has had several variations in his teaching and entertainment careers, along with a sideline of baseball memorabilia collecting and selling. He may just qualify for the “Nine Lives” designation himself.

At DLS, Hafeli taught sophomore and senior English. In 2000, he retired a second time from education, but was back a few months later when Br. Casimir Gundlach left the DLS Counseling Department for New York.

The 1960 University of Detroit High School graduate originally planned to pursue dentistry at the University of Detroit, but notes, “when I dissected a cat in anatomy class, it was clear science and I weren’t meant to be.”

Hafeli then pursued education, and began his teaching career in the Lakeview Public Schools, first in middle school, and then at Lakeview High School, starting in 1979. He became the school’s assistant principal in 1992, retiring in 1997.

Hoping for a second career in Writing or Public Relations, Hafeli met with representatives of the Detroit Tigers and the Macomb Daily, but “there was nothing there.”

Working on a crossword puzzle one evening in September 1998, he noticed the ad for an English position at De La Salle, and contacted longtime friends Richard Dobrzynski, and the late Tony DeSantis, both DLS faculty members at

“I had the Counseling degree for nearly 30 years, and had never had a chance to use it. I enjoyed Counseling, and was the Junior Class Counselor, helping kids think about college,” said Hafeli.

Although Hafeli retired a third time from education, in 2004, he continued to be involved with some DLS students through the Student Mentors Program.

One of his “mentees” was Darryl Jackson, ‘09, who became associated with Hafeli as a freshman.

“First and foremost, Mr. Hafeli is very much a part of my life,” said Jackson, a recent Communications graduate of Valparaiso University. Hafeli was at Darryl’s graduation.

Darryl added, “He was extremely patient with the young man I was and the man I’ve grown into. I wouldn’t have considered doing the things I’m doing now without him putting the thought into my mind, and showing me a different perspective. I’ve spent Christmases and Thanksgivings with

Dennis Hafeli him. He is a father figure to me. It’s that close of a relationship.”

Hafeli began collecting baseball cards as a youngster, and in the mid-70’s, “realized there was some value other than the memories provided.” His interest in memorabilia expanded to programs, yearbooks, and autographs. For 25 consecutive years, he had a table in Cooperstown,NY. at the Hall of Fame ceremonies. In 2007, he made his last Cooperstown trip. “My buddy had moved to Florida, and it was the year Ripken was going into the Hall of Fame. It was a good time to stop.”

In addition to his educational career, Hafeli has dabbled in drama and music. A lifelong “ham,” he appeared as Harold Hill, the lead in “The Music Man,” a Lakeview High School community production. It was his first role, but not his last.

For the past ten years, Hafeli, and his wife Dawn have spent a great deal of time at their second home in Port Austin, MI. Hafeli has appeared in 21 plays.

“We put on excellent productions, considering the size of the town and the number of people to choose from,” he said.

Hafeli also sold extensively on Ebay, but that became “quite time consuming.”

In 1973, Hafeli and some other teachers decided to participate in the middle school’s talent show. “We knew two songs - Johnny B. Good and Teen Angel.” The group was approached about playing for a party, and offered $100. “We decided we’d learn a few more songs.”

For 25 years, Hafeli’s group, “Replay,” with Hafeli as lead singer, appeared at weddings, anniversary and birthday parties, and more. Hafeli also brought them in for some DLS pep rallies and talent shows.

After several years of working with the Arthritis Foundation of Michigan, Hafeli’s wife, Dawn, retired. They are often traveling out of state to visit their married children: Scott, a financial analyst in the Baltimore area, and Melissa, who works in Nashville coordinating mental health benefits for the State of and Tennessee.

The group still gets together at his Port Austin home for a Labor Day performance, under the name “Dennis Hafeli and the Spring Street Boys.”

Hafeli continues to maintain close ties with DLS. His father, Edward, was a 1933 DLS graduate, and his brother Ken was in the Class of 1970.

“I loved teaching and being in education. Ending up at DLS was tremendous. I enjoyed my six years, and had a chance to be a counselor. I met a lot of wonderful people. It was a great way to end my working career.”

Alumni Spotlight Al Callewaert, Class of 1958 Growing up on Detroit’s lower east side, Al Callewaert learned about international business at a young age. He worked in his family’s neighborhood store, located by Assumption Greek Orthodox Church (now located in St. Clair Shores). Their customers were the neighborhood’s residents, representing nearly every country in Europe; in turn, the Callewaert family tailored its products - breads, cheeses, and meats - to its customer base.

And at age 75, Al is still working, teaching and consulting.

Al naturally gravitated toward business following high school, studying at the University of Detroit (now University of Detroit-Mercy), earning his Bachelor’s in Marketing and his Master’s in Business Administration.

He says that “U. of D. was an extension of the kind of education I got at De La Salle. My classmates were from other Catholic high schools - Catholic Central, Salesian, Servite, and so on.”

Not long after college, Al took a variety of tests, seeking government employment, and got a call from the City of Detroit’s budget department. He worked on a budget project about the marketing of public buildings.

In his research, he found that in other countries, public buildings, such as police stations, have a variety of functions. His report came to the attention of then Mayor Jerome Cavanagh, and Al was moved to the Planning and Economic Development Department, specializing in Business Retention and Development. In that position, he visited hundreds of businesses, establishing relationships with people in a variety of industries.

“My work - I truly can’t call it a career, too many job changes - was primarily in Business Development: finding new business vs. more business from existing customers.

It particularly involves attracting business from competitors - no easy task. When the economy sours, your job is eliminated.”

Locally, Al has been Chair of the Economic Development Committee in Clinton Township. He says that businesses have liked locating in Clinton Township, with the railroad running right through the township, just west of Groesbeck.

He says that Michigan’s Public Act 198 allows real-estate taxes to be 50% for up to 12 years, a huge tax incentive for new businesses, and for businesses to renovate. “Probably more than anyone else, Clinton Township has used PA 198.”

Several years ago, Al became involved with Walsh College, working to set up their International Business program. The program has since morphed into an International Business Certificate. “The three components of international business are learning about a country’s culture, its politics, and its history.”

As a result of his Detroit position, he was approached by one of the railroads to develop business relationships with industries needing rail lines for transports. “Properties and prospects, that’s what I did,” says Al.

In the 90’s, he taught in Russia, near the Black Sea. His students were prospective entrepreneurs. “They had to learn to delegate and to set up a work force. I’m not sure they’re there yet.”

He not only talked to the shipping departments. He would check assessing records in musty basements at county buildings throughout Michigan, attempting to find the owners of land to set up opportunities for new businesses to be located near existing rail lines.

For many years, Al has taught graduate courses in international marketing. “Central Michigan University has led the foray into adult education, largely through the military, and has set up courses at numerous military bases throughout the country.”

Al Callewaert Al is currently teaching a graduate international marketing course for CMU credit on three alternate weekends at a naval distribution center in Philadelphia. He includes case studies in his course, and also requires students to do interviews with people in international business. “There’s a lot more going on for a business than what an international traveler faces with luggage and airline schedules, time

zone and currency changes.

Because of his many international contacts, Al has traveled extensively.

China. Japan. Russia. Turkey. And, through a Canadian contact, Cuba. Al says that nearly all businesses in Cuba are SOE’s - State Owned Enterprises.

“It’s the same way in China. In order to do business in Cuba, a business will have to partner with the government.”

His most recent travels took him and his wife Tina to Belgium, to visit the family’s 87-year-old patriarch and family grave plots. Al toured St. Leo’s, in Bruges, where his grandfather Albert Callewaert and two uncles went to school over a century ago. Al plans to take his grandson, Brennan Hawkins, Class of 2017, the eleventh boy in the family to attend a Christian Brothers school, to Belgium after graduation.

Around De La Salle Four Graduates are National AP Scholars Congratulations to recent graduates Mickey Davey, Alex Laporte, Carlos Owens, and Grant Severyn, named National AP Scholars for their scores on the May 2015 Advanced Placement (AP) Exams.

National AP Scholars are those students who receive an average score of at least 4 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 4 or higher on eight or more of these exams. Exams are graded on a 1 to 5 scale, with 5 being the highest possible score.

Seven students earned AP Scholar with Honor (an average score of at least 3.25 on all AP exams taken, and scores of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams).

Academic Scholarships Top $13 Million The 224 graduates in the Class of 2015 earned nearly $13.24 million in academic scholarships, one of the highest scholarship totals in several years. This amount does NOT include scholarships awarded for athletic participation.

“This amount is a tribute not only to our students’ work ethic and perseverance, but to the exceptional Faculty and

Staff that support our exemplary educational system here at the Collegiate,” said Principal Mr. Patrick Adams.

“The Counselors worked closely with their seniors to help them apply for scholarships, and the students’ and counselors’ hard work in seeking financial awards has definitely paid off.”

Around De La Salle Christian Financial Credit Union Awards Scholarships Michael is attending De Paul (Chicago), and will be majoring in Finance and Economics.

Recent graduates Brenden Childs, Jonathon Miko, and Michael Smigiel each received a $500 scholarship from the Christian Financial Credit Union (CFCU).

Each of these recent graduates was in the CFCU Banking Program at De La Salle.

Brenden plans to major in Computer Science at Grand Valley State University; Jon is pursuing Philosophy and Medical Science at Oakland University;

Christine Quitter (CFCU), Michael Smigiel, Jon Miko, Brenden Childs, Aarran Meier (CFCU), and Dennis Koch (DLS).

Jon said, “Intro to Banking is one of the best classes that DLS offers. We had so many opportunities that you can’t get anywhere else. From working in the branches to touring the Quicken Loans headquarters in downtown Detroit, the class reaches much further than just in the classroom. I would highly recommend the class and Christian Financial to anyone who wanted to be a part of it.”

Michol Named Archdiocese Teacher of the Year Mrs. AnnMarie Michol is the recipient of the 2015 Bishop John Quinn Teacher of the Year Award.

“Being selected as Teacher of the Year for DLS is an honor in its own right, but to be chosen by the faculty and staff to represent DLS, a school filled with dedicated, talented teachers, is extremely humbling,” said Michol.

Michol was recognized at the 40th Annual Recognition Dinner, held in June, sponsored by the Catholic High School League (CHSL) and the Office of Catholic Schools.

She was nominated by her DLS colleagues to represent DLS at the annual banquet. Principal Patrick Adams then submitted her name for consideration for the Quinn Award.

Adams said, “AnnMarie Michol is a reason DLS is so special. She loves her students and expects the very best from them. And, of course, she gets their very best!!! We are blessed to have her.”

In presenting the Quinn award, Vic Michaels, Director of the CHSL, noted Michol’s dedication to her students, and love of her profession. He said, “Countless students come back each year and say that her class was the one class that prepared them most for college writing.”

She began her career at DLS as the varsity tennis coach in the mid 90’s, before joining the DLS staff as an English teacher in 1999. She has served as the Coordinator of Academic Affairs since 2004, and also moderates the Student Council. During the 2015-2016 school year, she is teaching in the International Baccalaureate Program. She also has moderated the Link Crew and served on the Technology Committee.

Michol said, “I teach because it is my passion. The rewards are witnessing the progress and improvements of my students. This award will continually remind me of how blessed I am to share my passion for teaching with my students at DLS and to continue to be the best I can by finding new innovative ways to help my students succeed. I am forever grateful to the faculty and CHSL for recognizing me.”

Around De La Salle Broadcast Club Begins Fourth Year Three years ago, De La Salle created the Broadcast Club, a group of students who initially did the play-by-play for varsity basketball games, with the audio live-streamed over the computer.

Since 2012, the group has expanded, adding football, soccer, and baseball to its repertoire, along with some JV games.

They would like to add hockey games as well.

Additionally, the Student Broadcast team has had the opportunity to announce games for the Prep Kickoff Classic, the CHSL Prep Bowl, and the CHSL baseball finals at Comerica Park, as well as the CHSL softball finals, a Lansing Lugnuts game, and the East-West All-Star game.

And all agree, the highlight of their three years was doing the play-byplay of the 2014 football playoffs, particularly the regional win over Brother Rice and the state championship win at Ford Field.

And since the games were streamed live, alumni and friends of De La Salle around the country have had the pleasure of following the Pilots. In fact, the 2014 State Championship Game recorded more than 500 “unique” visitors to the streaming website, likely the “Pilot Nation” around the country listening to the game at Ford Field and revelling in the school’s first-ever football state championship.

Knowing that graduation was always on their horizon, Brendan, Dave, and Eddie worked with the Student Broadcast Foundation to hold a “Summer Camp” each of the last three years to train interested students.

Last fall, Brendan also had the opportunity to host a weekly pre-game show on 92.7, recorded on Thursday evenings. The 15-minute show is presented prior to the Friday night “CHSL Game of the Week” on 92.7.

Student Broadcast Foundation Provides Training, Equipment The non-profit Student Broadcast Foundation (SBF) and its affiliate the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association (DSBA) were tremendously supportive with the DLS Broadcast Club. Thom Lengyel, Director of the SBF, utilized funds raised by the DSBA to purchase all the equipment necessary to produce an audio-only internet play-by-play: headsets, a mixer, a wi-fi interface via tablet. Thom then trained the students in how to use the equipment to connect to the Meridix website, the site chosen by the SBF to live-stream games. He also spent time training the students on how to do a play-by-play, to “paint the picture” for the listening audience.

“For students who get involved with Broadcasting as freshmen, they can look forward to eight years of fun - broadcasting through their high school and college years,” said Thom.

In addition to training the students on equipment and play-by-play procedures, Thom set up a seminar at DLS for student broadcasters from DLS and other CHSL schools in the summer of 2013, featuring trained professionals.

Initially, the SBF had hoped to also have a TV presence, but decided that the cost was too high. “It’s more important for a student to learn how to deliver an audio play-by-play,” said Thom.

The SBF also facilitates opportunities with the MHSAA for students to broadcast games outside of their own high school schedules, such as the state football finals at Ford Field and the state basketball finals at Michigan State University’s Breslin Center.

The Spring Collegiate introduced you to Mr. John M. Knight, our new President at De La Salle Collegiate. He’s had a very busy introduction to his leadership, meeting with students, faculty, staff and alumni. Additionally, he spent two summer weeks with Lasallian colleagues from around the world reflecting on the Lasallian Mission and St. John Baptist De La Salle. “It’s exciting,” says John. “There are so many quality

things happening at De La Salle, and they are all rooted in our Lasallian Mission. It’s been a great blessing to meet so many people whose lives have been impacted by our school.”

New Look for the DRC Thanks a generous donation from the DLS Christian Brothers’ Auxiliary, DLS students now have a beautiful study room in the Digital Resource Center (formerly the “Library”).

Principal Patrick Adams said, “Last year, the Student Council brought up a unique issue to me. They indicated students wanted a place to study quietly because all the common spaces, the DRC included, were now used as collaborative areas. We put our heads together and came up with the idea of a ‘Quiet Room’ within the DRC.” Alumni may remember this space as the Librarian’s office, adjacent to a resource room. Over the last few years, the space was opened up and part of the full DRC area. The space was transformed with a solid glass wall and doors to its current use as a quiet Study Room, which includes computers, chairs for relaxing, and some tables.

“It’s been a huge success. We owe a debt of gratitude to the CBA for making this happen. They have allowed this student-led initiative to come to life,” said Adams.

Advancement News Scholarship Endowments Crucial to Future of DLS Scholarship support for students is a defining part of our De La Salle and St. Joe’s history. Decades of Pilots and Blue Jays, many first generation college students from humble backgrounds, enjoyed a Catholic education because of that Lasallian commitment. Today, that tradition continues through the award of more than $1.3 million annually in tuition assistance. Endowed scholarships play a significant role in the school’s ability to provide that life-changing experience.

A Scholarship Endowment at De La Salle is simply a fund where the principle stays intact and generates annual interest to benefit a deserving student or students. Donors often establish an endowment in tribute to a loved one, or in their own name.

“Endowed scholarships are essential to our future,” says Brother Robert Carnaghi, President Emeritus. “People look back on their lives and recognize that De La Salle or St.

Funds can be established by immediate gifts of cash or stock, or be paid as a pledge over a defined period. Planned giving through a bequest or other methods is also a popular way to fund an endowment. The Advancement Office is available to discuss Endowment Guidelines or other ways to support De La Salle students through scholarship giving.

President John Knight sees Endowment as a crucial area of growth for De La Salle. “It will be an emphasis for us,” says Mr. Knight. “Healthy endowments characterize successful schools and most importantly help to fulfill our Lasallian mission. It’s also rewarding to see the satisfaction donors get from knowing they have established something that will connect them to De La Salle well beyond their lifetime.”

Admissions News De La Salle Education in Strong Demand

Class of 2019 at Freshmen Orientation on August 20, 2015 The Freshmen Class enrollment continues to be strong in numbers, academics, faith, and athletics. The incoming class of 9th grade students was over 200 students again, continuing a strong stable enrollment trend for the school. That same class also saw the largest cohort of students elect to enroll in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme.

Students in grades 4-8 have great opportunities this fall to experience why families continue to make the investment in a Catholic Lasallian education. Some of these events are: • Math+ for boys and girls in grades 6-8. This six-week course explores math topics that students rarely are exposed to in traditional junior high curriculums.

• Prospective Pilot Appreciation Night, October 16. Any prospective student who brings with him this Collegiate or prints off the flyer from the DLS website will be given free admission into the DLS v. Catholic Central varsity football game on Friday, October 16, at Wayne State’s Adams Field.

• Open House, November 8, from 12-3 pm. Two years in a row new families have listed this as one of the most impactful events in their decision process.

We also have opportunities for students and parents to visit campus during the day and view first-hand what daily life is like at De La Salle Collegiate.

• Pilot for a Day (shadowing): This is for any student in

grades 7 or 8. The prospective student comes to DLS and follows a current freshman. The visiting student will get to witness classroom instruction, interchanges, and teacher-student interactions, along with meeting any important coaches, moderators, or school officials.

• Coffee Talks: These are the perfect opportunity for parents and guardians to come into the building and see what daily life is like. You will meet with administrators, teachers, and counselors. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to observe classes, student interactions, and any other areas of interest.

Athletic News 2015 De La Salle Special Athletic Awards Brother Kevin Gilhooly Athlete of the Year Brandon Piwinski (football, soccer, track and field)

Brandon Piwinski

Brandon participated in four sports his senior year. In football, Brandon was a punter and place kicker for the State Championship team. He captained soccer his senior year, and was a three-year varsity starter on defense, earning post-season honors both junior and senior years.

As a junior, Brandon decided to try diving, and was the CHSL Diving Champ. In track and field, Brandon dominated the high jump for the last three years, winning numerous CHSL, Macomb County, and Regional Championships, and was state high jump champion for both 2014 and 2015. In 2014, he broke the 35-year old County High Jump Championship, and broke the DLS record. He will continue his outstanding career in Track and Field at the University of Michigan.

Zach was an outstanding hockey and baseball player, and was a captain on both squads. He anchored the defense over his three years on varsity hockey, was named to the MIHL honor team, and earned All-State honors. On the baseball team, he played multiple positions, including pitcher. He will continue his baseball career at Adrian College.

A four-year member of the baseball team, and a three-year starter, Nick captained the baseball team his senior year, leading the Pilots in numerous offensive categories, from his #3 spot, as he did in 2014. Nick led the student cheering section, the “BroZone� this year, and also attended numerous events, supporting the Pilots. Nick handled the Brozone Twitter account, keeping students informed of not only athletic news and scores, but school news as well. Nick was outstanding in the classroom, and will be continuing his baseball career at Hope College.

Jack Ryan was an outstanding midfielder on the soccer team, starting his junior and senior seasons, and was team captain and MVP his senior year.

He earned numerous post-season awards, capped off by All-State his senior year. Jack was also involved with numerous DLS activities, including Link Crew, Science Olympiad, and Kairos retreat leader. He wil be attending the University of Notre Dame.

De La Salle Distinguished Athlete (tie) Michael Danna (football) Jacob Van Ittersum (football, wrestling, track and field) Mike had a major impact on the football program, and his positive influence contributed to the success of the team. A three-year starter, and captain his senior year, Mike was named to the All-State Dream Team. He accepted a full-ride scholarship to Central Michigan University and will play for CMU’s Division 1 football team.

Jacob was one of De La Salle’s few three-sport athletes. He played offensive line in football, and will continue playing at the collegiate level at Northwood Institute. As a wrestler, Jacob was the 2015 CHSL Champion, District Champion and Regional Champion in his weight class, and earned All-State and Academic All-State honors.

Athletic News Spring Sports Highlights Track and Field

The varsity track team had an exceptional season, narrowly losing the CHSL title to St. Mary’s. The team had an outstanding showing at regionals, successfully defending their 2014 championship, and sending six individual athletes and three relay teams to the MHSAA State Finals.

Brandon Piwinski repeated as the state’s High Jump Champion and earned All-State honors. Brandon will be high jumping at the University of Michigan.

Mickey Davey finished 5th in the state finals in the 3200m. and was also All-State. Mickey’s run of 9:11.23 broke his own record, set on May 1, at the Golden Triangle Invitational in Saline, MI. That May 1 effort broke Ben Miller’s 2009 record of 9:23.76.

Mickey is at the U.S. Air Force Academy and will be a distance runner.

Junior Allen Stritzinger had an outstanding track season, finishing first in the 110m. hurdles at the regional meet. Allen participated in a National AAU meet in early August, finishing 6th in the 110m. hurdles, and earned All-American Honors.

The DLS Varsity Golf Team had an outstanding season, making their 19th trip in 21 years to the state finals, finishing 14th. Martin VanderHagen earned Division 1, All-State Honorable Mention honors.

The team won the Macomb County Championship, the District Championship, and took second at the CHSL and Regional matches. Veteran coach Doug McKay was named the Division 1 Regional Coach of the Year.

The team was also All-Academic, All-State, and VanderHagen and Matt Jozefczyk were named All-Academic, All-State as individuals.

Kevin Campion will continue his golfing career at Lawrence Tech.

Senior Wilson Selected for All-Star Game Senior Tru Wilson has been invited to the January 4, 2016 “Semper Fidelis AllAmerican Bowl” in Carson, CA. Sponsored by the U.S. Marines, the prestigious game will be broadcast by Fox. A three-year varsity player, and one of the 2015 captains, Tru plays both defensive back and running back.

DLS Head Varsity Football Coach Paul Verska praises Wilson. “He’s athletic, a leader, and an overachiever. This is a well-deserved honor.”

Tru has offers from Navy, Army, Air Force, Lehigh, and Robert Morris.

In addition to football, Tru is also a three-year wrestler, and qualified for the 2015 MHSAA Finals in the 171 lb. weight class.

During college, Brenden worked for two stations, including 1520 WMLM covering the LA Dodgers Single A affiliate, and the Great Lakes Loons, based in Midland, MI. Brendan O’Neill and Nicholas Callebs (‘13) were selected as the winners of the Canjar Design Award for their EyeSphere Project. This monetary award is bestowed once a year to the team of students who have undertaken design projects which benefit society. Both students are in the Engineering Program at the University of Detroit Mercy

Fr. Brian Meldrum was one of five deacons ordained on May 23 at Blessed Sacrament Cathedral by Archbishop Allen Vigneron, Archbishop of Detroit. Brian chose Msgr. Gary Smetanka (‘74) and Fr. Tim Birney to assist him in arranging his vestments. Fr. Brian then celebrated Masses of Thanksgiving at St. Thecla (his home parish) on May 24, Our Lady Star of the Sea on May 31, St. John the Baptist in Monroe on June 7, and St. Paul of Tarsus on June 14.

Fr. Brian is now the Associate Pastor at Our Lady of the Lakes Parish in Waterford, MI.
