FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Families, Change is an inevitable part of our lives in the 21st century. We only have to reflect on the changes in communications technology over the past decade to realise the enormous changes that have taken place. Change is also coming to De La Salle and I hope you will embrace the change and see it as something positive for our College.

I began my teaching career in De La Salle in 1972 and had seven wonderful years here before I moved back to Sydney. Returning in 2010, I felt that I was returning home. I have been privileged to work with several teachers who are my former students and been responsible for the education of the sons of many of my former students.

I had the privilege of organising the Diamond Jubilee concert of De La in 1972 at the Camberwell Civic Centre. I never expected that I would also have the honour of being responsible for the Centenary year as well. It gave us an opportunity to gather and celebrate in a variety of ways and it re-invigorated all that is finest in the spirit of De La Salle. The collaboration among the group that was responsible for the organisation of events was superb. Such occasions are not meant for bragging though we might have been forgiven if we indulged a little! Our Centenary was an occasion to remember our wonderful and colourful past and the people whose imagination and drive made it all possible. Our functions gave us the opportunity to gather and celebrate who we as a school and as a community are. And through all that was written and celebrated by people closely associated with the College community we endorsed our belief in the true values of a Lasallian education at De La Salle College.

Now it is time to move forward into our second century. It will be a period of great change and with that change comes new leadership of the College. We welcome Mr Brendan Ellis as Principal for the remainder of 2013. Please give Brendan your wholehearted support.

I express my gratitude to all the staff at De La Salle with whom I have worked during the past three years.

Our staff is both committed and professional and, most of all, nurture a strong collaborative spirit amongst themselves and that carries over to their students with whom they have built a strong mutual respect.

I express my gratitude to the office and administration staff who work tirelessly to ensure that the organisation is efficient and can always respond with diligence to the call of the hour. The maintenance team, library staff, counselling team, IT team and lab support staff are critical to our efficient operation and always deliver the best they can according to their respective abilities.

I express my appreciation and gratitude to the MMEC staff who do a superb job in looking after the boys with special learning needs. The College is non selective and our ability to offer the best we can to all who apply here is very important. The MMEC are crucial in enabling the College deliver the best we can to all who are enrolled here.

I express my sincere gratitude to the parents of the College. Under the leadership of Virginia Fairchild you have always been there for your boys and for the times when the College asked for your help. It was always a wonderful experience to share the Year 7 camp BBQ with the parents who were able to be with us. I welcome the new initiative of the Parents’ Network to bring our parents into closer contact with each other and so strengthen that spirit of friendship and collaboration upon which De La was built. And best wishes for a great Trivia Night in August.

I am indebted to the senior management team of whom three are new this year. They have made a wonderful entry into our community and I believe that the future of De La Salle is safely assured.

Finally I express my gratitude to the students of De La Salle who are the finest of young gentleman that any Principal could wish for. Whilst there are the occasional ‘mistakes’, their good deeds both in College and beyond, outnumber the small problems. They have a strong degree of respect for each other, for their teachers and for the College. I have high expectations for our seniors this year and would hope that our VCE improved results over recent years will soar in 2013!

I began my teaching career at De La Salle College Malvern in 1972 and now, forty one years later, I step down and make way for younger folk whom I am sure will bring fresh ideas and a new vigour to what happens in our community. Embrace the change that is coming and may it take De La Salle to places it never dreamed of only a decade ago.

As I step down from the leadership of De La Salle College, I will continue to reside in the Brothers’ community at Malvern for the immediate future. Please pray for me as I will for you and may the good Lord continue to bless you and your families with peace and happiness.

REST IN PEACE Dick Burke father of Trish (current Kinnoull Staff Member) passed away on Friday, 7 June. He was 86 year old.

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to Sam Michael (9B) who has been selected as a member of the School Sport Victoria’s Australian Football 15 years and under Metropolitan Team. He will participate in the Australian Championships to be held in Darwin 10 – 18 August.

Congratulations to Harrison Gill (8R) who recently competed in the Victorian Short Course Swimming Competition at Warrnambool. Due to his excellent performances at this State Competition, Harrison has qualified for the Under 14 Short Course State Championships at MSAC in late September. He continues to train 7 times per week which is testimony to Harrison's commitment and determination to be an elite swimmer. We wish Harrison well at the State Championships.

MAD – FINAL AMOUNT After all expenses have been taken out, the net amount for this year’s MAD drive for the Lasallian Missions is $94,100.00. This is a record collection for the College and a significantly larger amount than any other Lasalle school in the country. It represents staggering generosity and all students of the College are to be commended for their efforts this year with MAD. Well done!

STAFF CHANGES

Farewell: Ms Karen Harding is leaving De La Salle after 10 years with us. We wish her well in her new role at Firbank Grammar School and thank her for all that she has contributed to the College and students during her time with us. We are grateful to Mr Paul Harrup who is already teaching one Yr 12 Biology class and will take over Ms Harding’s class as well. Thank you, Paul.

Timothy Phillips, music tutor and percussion teacher, is leaving us at the end of term. We wish him all the best with his new post at Presbyterian Ladies College.

Tilman Robinson, music tutor, has been with us this term replacing Percy Landers whilst he has been on sick leave. Thanks being part of our community, Tilman, albeit for a short time. Our best wishes go with you.

Maternity Leave Mrs Courtney Walton will be taking time off for the birth of her first child, due within the next month. We wish her a safe delivery and a very happy time on maternity leave. Mrs Walton’s Yr 12 classes will be taken

by Mr Walton and Mr Petrie, both experienced Yr 12 English teachers and both very familiar with the syllabus and requirements. The change should be very smooth.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL TEACHING & LEARNING Term Two has been a very busy and productive time in the academic lives of the students and staff of the College. As this newsletter goes to print, reports are being prepared to send home to parents in the first week of the holidays so that students and families have access to all semester results and celebrate achievement as well as identify areas for improvement. The exam period in Semester One ran very smoothly and it was pleasing to have the entire college engaged in meaningful and focused formal assessment.

PARENT-TEACHER-STUDENT INTERVIEWS The two main dates for staff of the college to meet with parents and students are at the mid-points of Semesters One and Two. Following a review of this practice in 2011, it emerged that the second set of interviews are too late for relevant and timely conversations with Year 12 students, nor do they allow for immediate responses to issues raised in the mid-year report. As a result, an additional Parent Teacher Interview opportunity in Term 3 was introduced last year.

LANGUAGES ARE ALIVE AND WELL AT DE LA For a good part of the second term, Year 9, 10 and 11 students of Italian and the Year 9 and 10 students of French were preparing to take part in a grueling and popular competition!

The students of Italian were competing in the Dante Alighieri Poetry Recital Competition and the students of French, in the Berthe Mouchette Poetry Competition at the Alliançe Française. Both these competitions take many hours of preparation on the part of the students and the contest is always very fierce, with schools from all over Melbourne taking part. To their credit, the students in both languages prepared for their competition whilst preparing for their Semester 1 Exams – an exercise that cannot have been easy.

Therefore, congratulations must go to each of them for just taking up the challenge!

So, well done to all the entrants for stepping out of their comfort zone.

The official results from the Italian competition (more on the French when they are finalised) are in and we are very proud to announce that 5 students have been selected for the finals which will take place on Friday, 26 July at Melbourne University.

It is pleasing to note that we are among the small number of schools with five or more finalists and the most we have ever had at De La has been 3!

BLOOD BANK NEWS The Blood Service visit to De La Salle last week produced great numbers with 42 donations collected and a total of 53 donors passing through the mobile unit on the day (11 were unable to make a full donation at the time and an additional 14 were deferred due to various medical reasons). Our target was to collect 40 donations – so this was a great result.

Below is a thank you to staff and students, to let them know how much they contributed to blood stocks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dear De La Salle blood donors, Thank you once again for your support to the Australian Red Cross Blood Service. Schools like yours help ensure that we can continue to provide enough blood for our recipients.

Our visit on May 30 produced 42 blood donations collected; this means 42 blood donors potentially saved 126 lives!

Every unit we receive is split into its usable components of red cells, plasma and platelets – which can all be given to different recipients, hence one donation can help save three lives.

On behalf of all the recipients who will never get the chance to personally recognise you for your efforts – thank you!

CHAPLIN’S NOTES Year 8’s are currently celebrating Eucharist in their Homeroom groups. They have reflected on the many things they have to be grateful for; their families, the opportunity for schooling, their friends and the people who offer them small, but valuable service each day. So, I am hoping parents have had an extra hug recently, or been surprised by some words of gratitude for the wonderful things you do as parents. I can assure you, your sons’ appreciate your love for them – and hopefully they will tell you a little more often.

Confirmation will be held on Sunday, 28 July at the 11.00am. Mass at St Anthony’s Parish Glen Huntly.

Parents are reminded that the permission forms for the Retreat day and visit with the Bishop are returned as soon as possible. If your son does not have his project in – then it is overdue!

YEAR 7 BAND CONCERT (SEMESTER 1) Once again, 7J, 7R, 7S and 7V homerooms battled it out on the stage using costumes, secret pieces, amazing warm ups and attempted bribery of judges. Competition points from the semester were close and by the end of the night, 7Roland, conducted by Ms Jane Robertson, were the stand out champions.

Thanks go to the cheering parents who contributed brilliantly to the evening. Congratulations to all the boys who played so well after only six months of learning their instrument.

YEAR 10 WORK EXPERIENCE Whether your week of Work Experience took you on a journey of designing buildings, creating mock displays for global warming exhibits, taking flights around Melbourne, or assisting on building sites, the week was the beginning of the Year 10 students’ pathway journey.

I wonder what Mitchell Beaumont and Liam Forest felt when they became part of the ‘live animal’ display’ at one of the local primary schools? The boys were seeing what it would be like to be a Primary or Physical Education Teacher. They both had a great week, setting up and helping in the Art Room, being part of the morning literacy programs, helping out at the Sports Carnival and seeing how many hot chocolates they could drink in the teacher’s lounge over the course of a day.

Samuel Powell’s true talents came to the fore when he went to SJB Architects and was given a brief to design a home using AutoCAD computer program. He spent the week designing his “dream home’, with new skills learnt and a growing excitement for this field of work.

Connor Rate also had a great week, testing his life ambition to fly planes. His week at Moorabbin Flying Services enabled him to experience three flights, further igniting his love of flying. And if he chooses to, he won’t have to wait until the end of his secondary studies; he could begin his career pathway now by enrolling in a VET in Schools program in Year 11. Good luck, Connor, or should I say good luck mum and dad!

Another arm of the Work Experience program was a one-week Engineering Project with Akorn, at Scienceworks. Six boys, who nominated for the program, were given a brief on Monday morning; they needed to have it completed by Friday morning when they had to present it to an audience, made up of Scienceworks employees, engineers and their parents and teachers.

The boys had to create a new “Think Ahead” exhibit for Scienceworks. Their idea, based around climate change and the rising volume of the sea, was designed to engage a young target audience. The display using a specific computer program included a ‘hand crank’ which powered the exhibit using materials like ‘Perspex plastics for the interior and oil-based colours to represent the sea.

Two engineers from Norman Disney and Young Engineers assisted the boys with problems with acoustics and sustainability. The exhibit is in the draw for one of the 2014 New Exhibits at Scienceworks. Good luck, Jordan Cannizzaro, Liam Carey, Nicolas Catrice, Declan Griffan, Armand Setiawan, Vincent Simon and Francis de Bono.

YEAR 7 & 8 ACC SPORT Yesterday saw the end to ACC Sport for Term 2 with the completion of Year 7 and 8 Football and Year 8 Soccer.

Our Year 7 Football and Year 8 Soccer Teams were both involved in Minor Play Off Finals.

The Year 7 Football Team defeated Parade by 2 points to finish the season in 5th place. Thank you to Coach Buckley and "Master Statistician" Locke for their time, effort and superb management of the Year 7 ACC Football Team.

The Year 8 Soccer Team defeated Emmanuel College 6 - 1 to finish the season in 5th place. Thank you to Sir Dave Hale for his efforts with the Year 8 ACC Soccer Team in his debut role as Soccer Manager. With such a massive win yesterday, Sir Dave has the job for life!

Now to the main event from yesterday - the Year 8 ACC Football Grand Final.

After finishing Runner Up to Whitefriars in 2012, this playing group entered their 2nd ACC Grand Final in 2 years but this time the opponent was Parade. Having lost to Parade in Round 2 by 24 points, the boys and coaches were quietly confident that the team had significantly improved since then and could turn the tables at the Big Dance.

Due to a slightly superior percentage, we relished the opportunity of a HOME Final at DW Lucas Reserve.

Having beaten Whitefriars in the wet 2 weeks ago, the driving rain and muddy conditions held no fears for the De La mud larks.

In a very tense and frantic opening five minutes, Parade scored the first goal. However, De La had been warned several times pre match about the danger of trying to play catch up football, particularly in wet weather as goals are usually at a premium.

Our boys quickly ensured that the only team playing catch up football was Parade and by half time DLS had established an invaluable lead of 20 points. This advantage was achieved through relentless pressure and tackling combined with smart and skilful wet weather football.

By 3/4 time, the Premiership Pennant was almost ready to be hoisted at Tiverton Campus as Parade were held scoreless for the term and DLS had stretched the lead to 27 points. Parade certainly did mount a strong last quarter challenge but could manage just 6 behinds whilst DLS kicked the only goal for the quarter to record a convincing 28 point victory and premiership glory.

The final scores and details were: De La Salle - 6.6.42 Defeated Parade - 1.8.14 Goal Kickers Higgins 3, McGaw, Clarke, Farrell.

In one of the most unlikely coaching combinations, Barns and Atkins proved to be the Dynamic Duo. As well as coaching the team to a premiership, they managed to play nearly 40 Year 8 boys throughout just a 7 match season. 24 players were part of the winning team yesterday who celebrated the only DLS ACC Premiership for Term 2.

Thank you to Tom Curry (Team Runner) and Gerard Barns and Terry Atkins for their time, effort and most of all energy and passion for DLS Football which contributed in no small way to the ultimate success of the Year 8 Football Team.

ACC SWIMMING TRAINING Training for the 2014 ACC carnival starts in Week Two of Term Three (Monday 22nd July). Training will be twice per week on Monday and Wednesday to allow swimmers to train with the cross country squad on Fridays.

Squad members are required at Harold Holt at least 5 minutes before the training start time of 7:00am, to be ready for a prompt start.

PARENTS’ NETWORK DE LA VOLUNTEERS Volunteers are needed on two occasions in early Term 3 Morning Teas after Academic Awards Assemblies Wednesday 24 July PAC 8.30am-1.30pm (or a few hours within this time span) There are to be two assemblies in this time - one for Kinnoull campus then one for Tiverton. After each there will be morning tea for award winners and their parents. So I will be starting the set up at 8.30am, then preparation, serving and cleanup for the first morning tea, followed by the same process for the second. It will be a busy morning and I will need lots of help.
