FROM THE EDITOR Welcome to the latest issue of Roll Call, an especially significant edition. When former Headmaster Br Bill Firman fsc (Class of 1960) invited me to take on the editorship of this magazine in 2005, I never imagined that one day I would be writing his obituary. Br Bill was a larger-than-life figure whose presence and influence are woven deeply into the story of De La Salle College. We were all saddened by his passing in November last year. Yet, as it always has, the De La Salle story continues and, in this issue, we are pleased to introduce our new Principal. This year, Mr Michael Ilott, took up his appointment as the College’s 22nd Principal, and we warmly welcome him to the De La Salle College community.

Commissioning of the 22nd Principal On 20 April, the De La Salle College Malvern community gathered at St Joseph’s, Malvern, to mark a significant milestone, the commissioning of Michael Ilott as the College’s 22nd Principal.

In the presence of 150 invited guests, the Commissioning Mass signalled not only a change in leadership, but the beginning of a new chapter grounded in Lasallian faith and a shared commitment to nurturing young men of integrity, purpose and compassion.

This moment sits within a rich and enduring history.

Since the founding Principal Br Dunstan Drumm arrived from Ireland in 1912 with Br Loughran and Br Foley, the College has been shaped by 19 Brother Principals and one lay leader. Mr Ilott now becomes the second lay principal to guide the College into its future.

The Mass was presided over by Fr Michael Gallacher and brought together a broad cross-section of the College community, including members of the De La Salle Brothers, MACS representatives, fellow principals, staff and families. Student leadership was proudly represented by College Captains Thomas James, Josh Nolan and Oliver Fazio, while the College’s music students and staff enriched the liturgy with their performance.

The Principal’s commissioning was a moment of both reflection and hope, a time for the College community to gather in faith, united in its mission and inspired by the vision of the Founder St John Baptist de La Salle. As the College looks ahead, this occasion serves as a powerful reminder of its strong foundations and the shared journey that lies ahead.

LEADERSHIP

Embracing the It is with great humility and a deep sense of responsibility that I write my first article for Roll Call as Principal of De La Salle College, Malvern. Having now spent my first month in this role, I have been struck by the strength of the community, the sense of welcome from our students and staff, and the enduring spirit that has defined this College since its founding in 1912.

From my earliest days on campus, it has been clear that De La Salle College is far more than a school. It is a living tradition—one shaped by generations of students, families, and staff who have contributed to its story. Walking through both the Tiverton and Kinnoull grounds, meeting students, and hearing from Old Collegians, I have come to appreciate the powerful connection that so many feel to this place.

That connection is a testament to the values instilled here and the legacy we are entrusted to carry forward.

Central to that legacy is the vision of St John Baptist de La Salle. His commitment to education, particularly for young people, was grounded in respect, inclusivity, and a belief in the transformative power of learning. His principles, faith in the presence of God, quality education, concern for the poor and social justice, respect for all persons and inclusive community, remain as relevant today as they were centuries ago. They are not simply ideals we reference; they are values we must actively live out in our daily interactions and decisions.

In a world which holds immense challenges, particularly at the present, contemporary education in the Lasallian tradition calls us to be counter-cultural, something I feel is necessary and, while challenging, fills me with great hope.

future As I look to the future of De La Salle College, one of my greatest hopes is to bring together the great history of the school with the vast opportunities that lie ahead. We are privileged to inherit a rich tradition, but we must also be bold in shaping what comes next. Education is evolving rapidly, and our responsibility is to ensure that our students are not only prepared for that future but are capable of leading within it.

In this context, I want to challenge the students to challenges themselves—to step beyond comfort, to embrace growth, and to take ownership of their learning journeys and, in turn their own lives. True education is not passive; it requires curiosity, resilience, and a willingness to engage deeply with the world. Our role as educators is to support and guide, but ultimately, it is the students who must rise to meet the challenges before them.

Equally important is the role of our broader community.

The strength of De La Salle College has always been rooted in the relationships between students, families, staff, and Old Collegians. I am particularly keen to further engage our Old Collegian community, whose experiences and insights represent an invaluable resource for current students. There is a richness in these connections that has the potential to inspire, mentor, and guide the next generation.

In the coming years, I hope we can explore new ways to strengthen these ties and create opportunities for deeper involvement. There is a shared sense that our collective commitment to the College could open doors to initiatives that support both present and future students in meaningful and lasting ways. While these ideas are still taking shape, they reflect a broader aspiration to build something enduring that honours our past while investing in what lies ahead.

Ultimately, my vision for De La Salle College is one of continuity and growth—where tradition and innovation exist side by side. I am inspired by the stories that have come before and energised by the possibilities that await.

Together, as a community united by shared values and a common purpose, I am confident that we can continue to shape a College that not only honours its history but also embraces its future with courage and hope.

Meet the new College

Executive team Principal Michael Ilott commenced this year as the College’s 22nd Principal, bringing with him a wealth of leadership experience spanning both the education and corporate sectors. Prior to joining the College, Michael served for eight years as Director of Senior School at Xavier College, Kew. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in advancing the College’s strategic vision as one of Australia’s leading Catholic schools and guiding its significant transition to a Years 7–12 structure.

David Alexander has held several leadership positions at the College, including, Deputy Principal: Learning and Teaching; Acting Assistant Principal; Director of Learning and Development (Experiential) and Head of Holy Eucharist (Year 9 Campus). A passionate VCE Physical Education teacher, David and his wife Sarah have two primary school boys, Billy and Lenny.

Michael’s earlier leadership appointments include Deputy Principal at CBC St Kilda and Director of Pastoral Care and Wellbeing at St Patrick’s College, Strathfield (Sydney). He has also held leadership roles at Marcellin College, Randwick and CBHS Lewisham.

Before beginning his vocation in education, Michael built a successful career in Human Resources Management, working in Australia and internationally across the banking and oil industries. He is also a founding committee member of the Australian Character Education Alliance.

Chris Pye (Class of 1995) took up his role this year and has more than 20 years of teaching experience, 15 years in leadership in Catholic Education. Most recently, Chris was the Dean of Studies at Mazenod College where he saw their highest median study score of 33 in 2024 and 2025. He has extensive experience across academic leadership, curriculum design, staff development and student wellbeing. Chris and his wife Sabrina have two children, James and Genevieve.

Michael holds a Master of Educational Leadership, a Graduate Certificate in Religious Education and a Graduate Diploma in Education from Australian Catholic University, as well as a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Wollongong. Michael and his wife, Bronwyn, have two daughters, Clare and Eloise.

Deputy Principal: Staff and Students

D eputy Principal: Learning and Teaching

Director of Faith and Mission Brad Carmody joined the College this year and was the former Principal and Head of Education at the Melbourne Indigenous Transition School (MITS). He is an experienced faith and spiritual leader with a strong background in inclusive education, curriculum design and whole-school improvement.

He brings a deep commitment to personalised learning, staff collaboration and student wellbeing. Brad and his wife Sarah have two sons, Levi and Toby.

LEADERSHIP

Business Manager Julianna Mahoney joined the College in January this year and has more than 11 years business and management experience in secondary education. Most recently Julianna was a Business Management Consultant at The Knox School. Previously, she held senior finance roles at Wesley College, as the Associate Director, College Treasurer and Secretary and College Finance Manager. Julianna and her husband James have four children, William, Frederick, Constance and Margaret.

Director of Senior School Jeff Rayner joined the College in 2024 and most recently headed up the Year 9 Campus. Previously, from the UK Jeff has more than 17 years in education. A dedicated Physical Education and Health and Human Development teacher, Jeff channels his love of sport and healthy competition into both his teaching and personal life. Jeff and his wife Cass have recently welcomed their first child Patrick.

Director of Middle School Tom Murphy has more than 10 years’ experience in secondary education, all of them in an all-boys, Catholic setting, with the last four at the College. Tom worked previously at St Joseph’s Ferntree Gully and has taken on various learning and well-being coordinator roles both there and at De La Salle.

Director of Operations Janet Holden joined the College in 2010. She is an experienced Mathematics teacher with over 18 years in leadership roles. Prior to joining the College, Janet taught within the Government system for 20 years, where she held several positions of responsibility, including Sports Coordinator, Year Level Coordinator and Sub School Leader.

I aim to make lessons interactive and create an environment where students feel confident to ask questions, contribute ideas and learn through making mistakes.

Vanessa Marolda joined the Languages Department at De La Salle College in 2012 as an Italian teacher. She is now the Languages Learning Area Team Leader and has taught Italian from Year 7 through to Year 12.

Vanessa’s current focus includes Year 8 and Year 9 Italian, alongside supporting to the College’s VCE Italian program.

Vanessa also teaches Year 11 Religion and Ethics, a role she values for the opportunity to work across different areas of learning.

“I really enjoy the variety,” Vanessa says. “It allows me to work with a range of students and explore different areas, from language and culture to ethical thinking and discussion.”

Vanessa’s path into teaching was shaped by her own love of learning and the influence of exceptional teachers during her school years.

“They showed me how powerful education can be in shaping the way you think and see the world,” she explains.

“Teaching allows me to pass that on and encourage students to become curious and confident learners. I also value the opportunity to support students as they grow and develop, both academically and personally.”

For Vanessa, strong relationships are at the heart of effective teaching. She recalls an experience from her 6

early years in the classroom when a group of initially disengaged students became increasingly involved in their learning.

“By getting to know them and finding different ways to connect them with the work, I began to see a real shift,” she says. “Watching those students become more engaged and take pride in their work was incredibly rewarding. It reinforced how important relationships are in teaching.”

Creating a positive and supportive classroom environment remains central to her approach.

“When students feel comfortable and supported, they are far more willing to participate and have a go. I aim to make lessons interactive and create an environment where students feel confident to ask questions, contribute ideas and learn through making mistakes.”

Vanessa believes the strong sense of community at De La Salle College makes it a special place to teach.

“There is a genuinely supportive and welcoming culture among staff and students,” she says people care about one another, and there is a shared commitment to supporting each student in their learning and development.”

Outside the classroom, Vanessa enjoys spending time with family and friends and heading to the beach whenever she can.

“It’s a great way to relax, get some fresh air and unwind after a busy week,” she says. “It helps me return to the classroom feeling refreshed and ready for the week ahead.”

TEACHER PROFILES

Building confidence through

music

As Music Ensemble Coordinator at the College, Jaymee Lee sees firsthand the powerful impact music can have on students, particularly the confidence it can build both on stage and in the classroom.

Providing opportunities for students to perform in front of an audience can be transformative. “I’m always proud when students grow in confidence and develop a sense of personal independence through music,” he says.

One student’s journey remains especially memorable.

“From the first time I met him in Year 9 to his final performance in Year 12, the change was remarkable.

In the beginning he struggled to find his place in the music and even his starting note. Four years later he stood before the whole school during Mass and delivered a powerful solo that held the entire congregation spellbound.”

“You could have heard a pin drop. His voice filled the space, and everyone was captivated by the revelation of his talent.

When he finished, there was a spontaneous burst of applause, even though it was Mass and technically not the time for it.

It was such a moving moment and one I will never forget.”

For Jaymee, the experience affirmed what can be achieved through dedication and encouragement. “His growth as a musician in those four years was phenomenal.

I would like to think I played a small part in helping build the confidence that allowed him to succeed.”

Alongside coordinating the College’s many ensembles, Jaymee teaches bass guitar and percussion in the Year 7 Band Program and the Year 9 Elective Music program.

He also provides instrumental bass guitar lessons and directs both the Stage Band and Year 9 Band ensembles.

Jaymee’s own path into teaching was shaped by two influential mentors. “My Music and Mathematics teachers at school were outstanding. Their deep knowledge of their subjects and their passion for sharing it with students inspired me to become a teacher.”

In his own classroom, he focuses on building confidence step by step. “I try to break complex tasks into manageable stages and celebrate small wins along the way.

I encourage students to attempt unfamiliar challenges by giving them permission to make mistakes. When students understand that mistakes are a normal part of learning, they develop the courage to take risks.”

Jaymee says he feels fortunate to work in an environment where he can contribute across many aspects of College life. “Whether it’s directing bands, organising concerts, teaching classes and instrumental lessons, or using lighting and sound skills for performances, there’s a deep sense of satisfaction in knowing that my work contributes positively to the culture of the College.”

Outside the classroom, Jaymee remains deeply connected to music. He performs as a session bassist with a variety of bands and can often be found dancing the Lindy Hop at venues around Melbourne. And when there is a quiet moment between teaching, performing, and dancing, he enjoys relaxing with a challenging cryptic crossword.

Mass

On Thursday 5 March, the De La Salle community gathered at St Patrick’s Cathedral to celebrate the Welcome and Opening Mass, marking the beginning of the academic year in faith and unity.

The Director of Faith and Mission, Brad Carmody, said the Welcome and Opening Mass is a significant and cherished moment in the life of the College. “It provides an opportunity for the entire community to come together in prayer, reflection and celebration, while officially welcoming new students and staff into the De La Salle family.”

The Mass, which was presided over by Father Michael Gallacher, marked the first opportunity for our new Principal, Michael Ilott, to address the College community.

The Mass also acknowledged our Year 9 and Year 12 student leaders as they began an important year of leadership within the College.

“Set within the beauty and reverence of St Patrick’s Cathedral, the celebration reminded us of the shared values that unite us as a Lasallian faith-filled learning community. It also acknowledged the journey ahead for our students, particularly those commencing their time at the De La Salle, and highlighted the important role each member of the community plays in shaping the spirit and mission of the College.”

Celebrating VCE success

LIFE AT THE COLLEGE

The College community gathered at the Tiverton Campus on 13 February to celebrate the achievements of the 2025 VCE cohort and formally invest the 2026 Student Leadership group.

Acting Principal Mr David Alexander congratulated the Class of 2025 on an exceptional year. The cohort achieved a Median Study Score of 32, equal to the highest on record and well above the Victorian state average of 30.

“A remarkable achievement for the 2025 VCE cohort,” Mr Alexander said. “Your success sets a powerful example for all students. You remind us of the effort and perseverance required to achieve excellence. I encourage you to continue using your gifts in ways that serve others and contribute positively to society.”

Special recognition was given to 2025 College Dux, Emmanuel Ganas, who achieved an outstanding ATAR of 99.8. Emmanuel is now studying Medical Science at Monash University.

Team

College Captain – Thomas James began his education at St Kevin’s Primary School in Ormond before joining De La Salle College in Year 5. As College Captain, Tom believes leadership is about fostering faith, encouraging others to reach their potential and strengthening the sense of community among students.

“Being a student leader at De La Salle College is about leading by example and representing the Lasallian values of the College with pride,” he said. “I try to support others and give my best in everything I do.”

Tom believes his peers would describe him as hardworking, determined and loyal. Outside of school, he enjoys going to the gym and playing organised sport, particularly basketball and cricket. He is also a keen follower of AFL and values spending time with family and friends. After Year 12, Tom hopes to study Law at Monash University and pursue a career that will challenge him academically while enabling him to make a positive contribution to the future. Tom’s father, Gary is from the Class of 1988.

Vice-Captain – Oliver Fazio attended Ashburton Primary School before commencing at De La Salle College in Year 7. For Oliver, leadership is about representing and motivating the entire student body.

“To me, being a student leader is about being a voice for all students,” he said. “Everyone is capable of achieving their goals and I hope to motivate others to pursue their dreams and always do their best.”

Oliver believes his peers would describe him as determined and someone who always follows through on his commitments. Known for his outgoing personality, he particularly enjoys meeting new people and values showing respect and maturity in his interactions with staff, students, friends and families.

A passionate basketball fan, Oliver spends much of his time playing and watching the game. He closely follows the NBA, especially the Brooklyn Nets, and enjoys watching LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers. He also enjoys going to the gym and catching up with friends. Oliver’s father Tom is from the Class of 1985.

Vice-Captain – Josh Nolan attended Ashburton Primary School before joining De La Salle College in Year 7.

He describes leadership as an opportunity to support others and help build a positive school culture.

“Being a student leader means setting a positive example and helping create a supportive environment for everyone,” Josh said. “A good leader should be approachable, responsible and willing to represent the voice of the students while working with staff to make the school community stronger.”

Josh said he was inspired to nominate for a leadership role because he wanted to give back to the College community and challenge himself to grow as a person. “I also wanted to help support younger students as they progress through the school,” he said.

He hopes to promote school spirit and contribute to a positive and inclusive culture where every student feels valued. Outside the classroom, Josh enjoys motorbike riding, four-wheel driving, swimming and watching AFL, particularly when the West Coast Eagles are playing. Josh’s father Dan is from the Class of 1994.

VM VCE Captain – Angus Jackson attended Murrumbeena Primary School before beginning at De La Salle College in Year 7. As VM VCE Captain, Angus views leadership as both a privilege and a responsibility.

“It is a privilege to be a leader at De La Salle College and I’m very aware of the responsibilities that come with it,” he said. “I always strive to do my best and encourage others to do the same.”

As part of his VCE Vocational Major program, Angus is completing a Certificate III in Building and Construction and hopes to become a registered builder after graduating.

Angus believes his peers would describe him as warm, welcoming and easy to talk to. Outside of school, he enjoys playing sport, especially football, as well as spending time at the gym and catching up with friends.

Cooking up the Who doesn’t enjoy food, talking about it, learning about it, and more importantly, eating it!

Now imagine a school subject that ticks all those boxes: exploring food and nutrition, developing practical life skills, and sitting down to enjoy the finished product, all while competing in MasterChef-style mystery box challenges in a brand-new, purpose-built facility.

In its inaugural year, more than 200 De La Salle College students have enrolled in the College’s new Food Technology course, highlighting its immediate popularity and relevance.

Delivered as a semester-based subject across Years 9 and 10, Food Technology is housed in the College’s newly constructed, state-of-the-art Food Technology kitchen which opened this year. Sustainably powered and among the most advanced school food technology spaces in Melbourne, the facility provides students with a professional learning environment. Adjoining the Food Lab is a generalpurpose classroom, allowing structured theory lessons to seamlessly complement hands-on practical work.

Learning Area Team Leader – Technology, Mr Chris Church, said the introduction of Food Technology reflects the College’s holistic approach to education.

“The new course prepares young men not only for academic success, but for life beyond the school gates,” Mr Church said. “By embedding food education into the curriculum, the College aims to ensure students graduate with the skills, confidence and independence needed to look after themselves in all aspects of adult life.”

“The course exposes students to a wide range of food types, preparation techniques and culinary concepts. Each lesson is underpinned by a theoretical focus, which is then brought to life through practical application in the kitchen. Students work in pairs, developing technical skills while also strengthening collaboration and communication.”

“Assessment throughout the course is equally engaging.

Students are challenged to design new food items for the College canteen and participate in MasterChef-style mystery box challenges, encouraging creativity, planning and problem-solving under pressure.”

As an immersive, hands-on subject, Food Technology has proven extremely popular, with almost all Year 9 students applying to participate. Alongside learning about food safety, kitchen equipment and cooking techniques, students also explore the social and cultural role of food, and its power to connect individuals and communities.

“Looking ahead, the College is exploring pathways beyond Year 10, including VCE Food Studies and a range of VET options, providing students with opportunities to pursue further study or career pathways in the food and hospitality industries.”

The course also aligns seamlessly with the College’s transformative middle-years WISE program, structured around four key pillars: Wellness, Independence, Service and Expedition.

“The new Food Technology course reinforces wellness and promotes good health,” Mr Church said. “We know young men need appropriate nutrition to grow, remain healthy and stay focused on their academic and sporting commitments.

Empowering students with the knowledge and responsibility to prepare their own food is a vital part of their transition from boys into young men.”

Life at

Kinnoull

The College this year welcomed its 139-strong cohort of Year 9 students, who have quickly settled into the newly refurbished WISE Building at Kinnoull Campus.

Director of Middle School, Tom Murphy, noted how positively students have responded to the upgraded facilities, embracing a learning environment designed to inspire and engage. The building features expansive classrooms, a modern Food Technology kitchen, a dedicated STEM space and a fully equipped Science laboratory.

“Students have shown a clear sense of pride and respect for their surroundings, contributing positively to both their learning and the wider College culture. As the senior cohort on campus, the Year 9 students have also stepped confidently into visible leadership roles among the younger year levels,” Mr Murphy said.

The Year 9 students share the Kinnoull Campus with the Year 7 and 8 cohorts.

The WISE Building has been thoughtfully designed to support a contemporary and diverse curriculum. Upper levels house general learning areas alongside a dedicated art space, while the lower level includes specialist facilities for Food Technology, STEM and Science. Newly landscaped outdoor areas further enhance the precinct, offering opportunities for assemblies, flexible learning and the future addition of an outdoor auditorium.

“At the heart of the Year 9 experience is the WISE program, focusing on Wellness, Independence, Service and Expedition. Each term centres on one of these pillars through a combination of practical and reflective learning. A highlight of the program is a new five-day expedition to Baw Baw National Park, scheduled for Term 2, which will challenge students to build resilience, teamwork and independence.”

“The College’s approach to learning at Year 9 is reflected in its cross-curricular model. Flagship subjects such as Alliance (integrating English and Humanities) and Ingenuity (combining Mathematics and Science) promote a project-based approach that encourages curiosity, collaboration and deeper understanding.”

“Students also benefit from a broad and engaging elective program, with offerings including Forensic Science and Statistics in Sport, alongside the introduction of Food Technology in 2026. Constructing a

legacy

Ben Turner (Class of 1998) has never been one to shy away from opportunity. That mindset has carried him from the classrooms of De La Salle College to the top tier of Melbourne’s construction industry, where his company, Henny, is now recognised as a market leader.

Founded in 2018, Henny has grown rapidly in just eight years, culminating in a major milestone in 2025 when the company was awarded the Master Builders Excellence Award for Medium Rise Apartments. For Ben, the recognition is both professionally and personally significant, a reflection of ambition, resilience, and the power of backing yourself.

That drive was evident early. After graduating from the College, Ben spent the summer working as a bricklayer’s labourer for his father. His Year 12 results narrowly missed the entry requirement for RMIT’s Bachelor of Construction Management, but instead of accepting the outcome, Ben took initiative to question the decision. “I requested, and remarkably received, an interview with the Faculty Director.

Armed with determination and a willingness to prove myself, I sat an additional test and secured a place,” he said. In 2002, he graduated with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management) with First Class Honours.

That defining moment set the tone for a career built on seizing opportunity. While still at university, Ben secured a graduate role with Sinclair Knight Merz (now Jacobs), where he spent seven years working on projects across Australia. The role also took him overseas, including a 12-month placement in Guam with Exxon Mobil.

International experience would become a hallmark of Ben’s career. He went on to work with Galliford Try in England and later took part in a unique project, building a private residence for Sir Richard and Lady Joan Branson in the British Virgin Islands.

His time working alongside Sir Richard left a lasting impression.

“Surround yourself with good people, look after your team, and drive a positive culture,” Ben says.

“That’s been the foundation of everything we’ve built.”

Ben returned to Australia in 2008 and spent the next seven years with Hickory, working in site and project management roles across Australia and China. Then, in 2018, he and his wife Georgia founded Henny, inspired by the bespoke, high-end residential work they had delivered overseas.

While luxury homes were the original focus, opportunity soon reshaped the business. Today, Henny has expanded significantly, with additional shareholders, a development arm known as Prime Edition, a formwork business, and projects soon to commence on the Gold Coast.

The 2025 Master Builders Excellence Award, for a mediumrise apartment project in Surrey Hills, marked a standout moment. “To be recognised alongside businesses that have been operating for 50 years or more was incredible,” Ben says. “We’ve only been doing this for eight years, so it was real validation that we’re on the right track.”

Despite the success, Ben is candid about the challenges facing the construction industry, including an ageing workforce, skills shortages, and the need to attract younger people.

“We need to support those retiring by upskilling them in areas like IT and AI, while also helping the next generation build work ethic and general industry knowledge,” he says.

“It’s a tough industry and it requires hard work, but the opportunities are endless. I’d love to see more students choosing construction as a career.”

Away from work, Ben’s focus is firmly on family. He and his wife have two young children, and spare time is precious.

He still laces up for Wednesday night basketball in the over-35s competition, often with fellow Old Collegians, and enjoys the occasional round of golf with school friends.

Reflecting on his time at De La Salle, Ben’s gratitude is unmistakable.

“My best mates from De La Salle are still my best mates today,” he says. I’m forever grateful for my time at De La Salle and hope to see many more Lasallians forging successful careers in the construction industry.”

Leaving his

mark

For nearly two decades, Jock O’Callaghan (Class of 1985) has been a driving force within the Paralympic movement, both in Australia and on the global stage. From his leadership as President of Paralympics Australia to his role on the Audit and Finance Committee of the International Paralympic Committee, and as inaugural Vice President of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games Organising Committee, his contribution has been both significant and enduring.

Jock’s involvement in the Paralympic movement began with his son, Jonty, an elite para-alpine skier. Jonty represented Australia at the 2018 Winter Paralympics and was later selected for the 2022 Games before a serious training accident forced his withdrawal. It was through supporting Jonty’s journey that Jock first became connected to the movement that would come to define much of his professional life.

“When Jonty was progressing through the junior ranks as an international athlete, I was given the opportunity to contribute,” Jock said. “That began with a role on the board of Paralympics Australia and evolved into my appointment as President.”

His influence quickly expanded beyond Australia. In 2018, he joined the International Paralympic Committee’s Audit and Finance Committee, before playing a key role in Brisbane’s successful bid for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. What began as a volunteer contribution soon grew into an almost full-time commitment. Following the successful bid, Jock was appointed inaugural Vice President of the organising committee, helping to establish the operational and commercial foundations of the Games.

From negotiating commercial partnerships and broadcast rights to shaping leadership structures and ambassador programs, Jock was central to elevating Paralympic sport both nationally and internationally. “Australia has always punched above its weight on the world stage,” he says. “The progress we made here helped create momentum globally.”

Before his extensive involvement in sport, Jock built a distinguished thirty-year career with PwC, working throughout Australia and internationally and becoming a partner in 2001. Yet among his many professional achievements, he counts his work advancing equity and opportunity for para-athletes as a defining highlight.

His contribution to sport extends beyond the Paralympic arena. In 2021, Jock was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Melbourne and Olympic Parks Trust, which oversees

Australia’s premier sporting and entertainment precinct.

He remains on the Trust following his recent reappointment for a further four years.

At the core of Jock’s leadership are the values of loyalty and integrity. “They are the attributes against which I assess myself, my colleagues and the organisations I work with,” he explains. “I also believe strongly in giving every person the opportunity to perform at their best.”

Despite the scale of his achievements, it is the personal connections that have proven most meaningful. “Nothing compares to the time I’ve spent with para-athletes, from global stars like Dylan Alcott and Ben Tudhope to young competitors at their first events.”

Though he formally retired five years ago, Jock remains deeply engaged in community impact as Advisory Chair of Fly2 and Chair of its offshoot charity Fly2 Foundation.

The organisations deliver vital allied health services to regional and remote communities across Australia, flying teams of clinicians into nearly 100 locations. “Without this service, many people simply wouldn’t have access to the care they need,” he says.

Outside of his professional and philanthropic work, skiing has become an important part of family life. A late starter to the sport, Jock now shares a passion for the slopes with his children, all of whom have competed at a national level. Since the passing of his wife in 2018 after a lengthy illness, skiing has provided a meaningful way for the family to stay connected, whether at Mount Buller or abroad during the northern hemisphere winter.

Jock also continues to value the enduring friendships formed during his time at De La Salle. “I’ve maintained lifelong connections with a number of my classmates and thoroughly enjoyed reconnecting with many others at our recent reunion.”

A leader, advocate and proud alumnus, Jock O’Callaghan’s legacy is one of service, integrity and lasting impact, both within the Paralympic movement and far beyond.

When Jonathon Matthews (2005) isn’t leading the wholesale division of global fashion powerhouse HUGO BOSS, you’re just as likely to find him at the Rye Skateboard Park, trying to land a kick flip alongside his kids. It’s a scene that perfectly captures Jonathan’s approach to life: balance, energy and a deep commitment to people.

As a student, Jonathon’s greatest passion was running.

Athletics and Cross-Country seasons were highlights of the school year, and even the dreaded beep test sparked excitement rather than fear. “Sport in all its forms played a significant role in my school life, whether it was competitive racing or lunchtime games of four square and kicking the footy with mates,” he said.

Beyond sport, Jonathon thrived on leadership opportunities and relished representing the school whenever he could. Academically curious, he enjoyed a broad range of subjects, with English, Biology, Mathematics and Physical Education standing out.

“After graduating, I completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Deakin University and while studying, worked casually at Rebel Sport, combining my love of footwear with retail experience. Initially drawn to research and further study, my perspective shifted following an overseas trip through Europe in 2012, prompting me to explore new professional avenues.”

“That pivot led to a full-time role with Saucony, where I worked in product training for four years. It was here that I began to transition into sales, a move that would shape the next chapter of my career.” Jonathon later joined menswear brand Ben Sherman, continuing to build his commercial experience before seeking his next challenge.

In 2021, Jonathon joined HUGO BOSS, and five years on, he now leads the brand’s wholesale division.

For Jonathon, success has always been about people.

“Enjoyment and resilience at work are deeply influenced by the teams you are part of and the relationships you build.”

Opportunities for continuous learning, personal growth and development have guided every career decision he has made. As a leader, Jonathon sees his role as a privilege, one that extends beyond achieving results to supporting others in reaching their potential.

His proudest career moments aren’t tied to titles or milestones, but to watching colleagues grow. “Whether it’s seeing team members step into new roles, expand their responsibilities or challenge themselves professionally, I get fulfilment in helping others succeed.”

Outside of work, Jonathon lives in Rye with his wife Ashley and their children Pippa (7), Lonnie (4) and Sloane (3 months). While his passion for exercise remains strong, it’s evolved over time. Morning workouts on the beach, ocean swims, surfing when time allows, gardening and movie nights all feature in his routine. Skating has also made a comeback, inspired by his children’s growing interest, leading to regular visits to the skateparks of Sorrento, Rye and Rosebud.

Reflecting on his time at De La Salle, Jonathan credits the school with instilling confidence, self-acceptance, and a strong work ethic. “The values and lessons I learned about inclusion, hard work and forming respectful relationships with adults, are the foundations that helped me transition seamlessly into life beyond school.”

From school athletics tracks to international boardrooms, and now skateparks, Jonathon Matthews’ journey is a powerful reminder of how De La Salle’s values continue to shape lives long after graduation.

Finding , one note at a time Peter O’Shea (Class of 1976) was 19 years old when he first picked up an instrument. Starting on the mandolin, he soon found his true calling in the violin, a passion that would lead him to become a familiar name in Melbourne’s Celtic music scene, sharing stages with international artists including Christy Moore and De Dannan.

When Peter graduated from De La Salle College, he had no clear sense of direction. “A brief stint in banking, along with various casual jobs, confirmed that office life was not for me,” Peter said. “Everything changed after seeing the electrifying performances of Louis McManus and Mic Conway, igniting my determination to pursue music full-time.”

After completing a Bachelor of Arts (Music) at Monash University he hit the road, learning his craft along the way.

He spent several years performing singing telegrams in an array of costumes, developing resilience, adaptability, and a thick skin, before confidently taking the stage as a violinist.

By the early 1980s, opportunity met persistence, and during the Celtic and folk music boom he became a full-time musician, performing up to six nights a week. He also plays Guitar, Violin, Viola, ‘Cello, Mandolin and Didgeridoo.

Peter played with bands such as Bushwahzee, The Liberties and The Celts, appearing at major festivals including Port Fairy, as well as on television, radio and in the press.

His violin took him everywhere, from pubs and clubs to festivals, weddings, funerals and even trucks rolling down Swanston Street. He also recorded two studio albums “Shamrock Shore” and “Bonny Ship the Diamond.”

Peter’s violin skills are sought after and he has supported artists such as Christy Moore, De Dannan and even Nelson Mandela, while appearing on major television and radio programs. Peter, however, says that his most meaningful work has taken place far from the spotlight.

“Playing for children with cancer through Red Kite, and performing regularly in hospices, nursing homes and mental health facilities, remains the most rewarding and spiritually significant part of my work,” he said.

Alongside performing, Peter has built a distinguished teaching career working across Melbourne institutions including the University of Melbourne’s Conservatorium of Music, Monash University Arts Centre, Northcote High School, St Kevin’s College, Scotch College, and The Knox School. He later spent a decade teaching at the Institute of Education and worked extensively with Melbourne Youth Music at the Victorian College of the Arts.

After focusing in recent years on public and Catholic schools, Peter retired from classroom teaching in mid-2025, though retirement has been anything but quiet. He remains busier than ever with performances, recording sessions and private teaching.

Today, Peter continues to pursue long-held passions.

“I am still acting and have appeared in productions at La Mama and currently performing with Christian theatre group COG.” A long-time martial artist and fitness enthusiast, he also volunteers his time playing music in nursing homes and remains a loyal, if long-suffering, supporter of Essendon and West Ham. He is the proud father of a son, Michael and is embracing a new chapter of life.

Reflecting on his De La Salle days, Peter credits the College’s discipline and high expectations with instilling resilience, self-discipline and a commitment to doing one’s best. “Influential teachers and mentors, including Father Les Troy, left a lasting impression through their compassion, inclusivity and care for the whole person, values that continue to guide my life and work.”

Turning waste into

opportunity

Two years ago, Lachlan Armstrong (Class of 2017) found himself far from the familiar classrooms of De La Salle College, standing instead on the island of Lombok, Indonesia, with an ambitious idea: to build the island’s first proper recycling facility. Today, that idea is a reality.

Honest Made, the recycling and manufacturing company Lachlan co-founded in early 2024, is transforming plastic waste into furniture and household products, while creating jobs and changing mindsets in a place that has never had a formal recycling system.

plastic is processed on site and turned into furniture and household items, sold locally and internationally. To make that possible, Lachlan and his partner raised capital from international impact investors and sourced machinery that had never existed in Lombok before.

After graduating from De La Salle, Lachlan took a two-year gap year, travelling through Europe and Canada. Like many young Australians, his plans were disrupted by COVID-19, and in 2020 he returned home to begin a carpentry apprenticeship with a high-end residential construction company. Over the next four years, he completed a Certificate III in Carpentry and a Certificate IV in Building and Construction, juggling full-time work with night school.

Since then, the team has produced more than 500 recycled plastic pieces, shipping products to Lombok, Bali, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.

Meanwhile Lachlan felt a growing pull back to travel, and to do something with a broader sense of purpose. That feeling led him and a group of friends to Lombok for what was meant to be a six-month holiday. A chance meeting there changed everything. Lachlan met Tom Jackson (pictured right) who would become his business partner, and together they began shaping the idea for Honest Made: a recycling and manufacturing facility designed to fill a major infrastructure gap on the island.

“We wanted to give the local community a real way to recycle their waste,” Lachlan explains. “The recycling system in Indonesia is broken, and we quickly realised that a ‘wasteto-value’ approach was the only way to make it work.”

Honest Made pays locals per kilo to collect plastic waste and partners with local businesses to manage their plastic.

Traditionally, many locals relied on biodegradable materials like banana leaves, but the rise of single-use plastic, without a recycling system, has meant much of that waste ends up in rivers and oceans. The key has been listening first and meeting people where they are, rather than lecturing.”

Cultural differences also shape his leadership style.

“A big value for me is leading by example, actions over words,” he says. “A lot of my day-to-day work involves communicating with staff who don’t speak English, so showing people what ‘good’ looks like and getting in alongside them really matters.”

Reflecting on his time at De La Salle College, Lachlan credits the school with shaping the values that drive him today. “De La Salle taught me a strong sense of right and wrong,” he says. “That’s a big part of why I’m motivated to build something that helps people who haven’t had the opportunities we had.”

For John Donaldson (Class of 1995), a fascination with diversity, culture and human relationships has shaped both his professional life and personal values. From the classrooms of De La Salle College to schools across the globe, John has combined a love of travel with a deep commitment to education and student wellbeing.

“I have always been fascinated by diversity, culture and relationships,” John said. “That curiosity has helped me remain compassionate. Being raised with Christian values ensured a respectful approach to others, a genuine interest in their lives and their needs.”

He credits the De La Salle community with reinforcing these principles. “The College embodied those values and helped me recognise the importance of living this way.”

Now Head of Caffin House at Melbourne Grammar School, John works closely with adolescents at a formative stage of their lives. He is deeply passionate about student wellbeing; particularly as young people develop their sense of identity.

“Adolescence can be a difficult time,” he says. “To be able to offer support and guidance during that period is incredibly fulfilling.”

John completed a Bachelor of Education at the University of Melbourne. Teaching soon became both his profession and passport, allowing him to travel extensively throughout the UK, Europe, Russia, Africa, Tibet, Iran, Pakistan and India.

“Travel is a privilege,” he says. “I’ve been fortunate to combine my love of teaching with visiting extraordinary places.”

Among the highlights were volunteering in a Tibetan school in the Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Region and teaching at the Victorian International School of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, where he immersed himself in Arabic and Islamic culture.

In 2025, John’s expertise in boys’ wellbeing took him to the International Boys’ Schools Coalition (IBSC) Global Conference in Boston, hosted by Belmont Hill School and attended by more than 650 delegates from around the world. There, he led a workshop on help-seeking behaviours in middle school boys.

“Approximately half of boys at this age seek help for family, social, health and academic challenges,” John explains.

“Understanding both the drivers and barriers to helpseeking is critical. School communities can implement interventions that encourage boys to ask for support and prevent ongoing mental ill-health.”

As both an educator and the father of two young boys, Fraser (4) and Miles (7), John has a keen awareness of the challenges facing boys as they move through their school years.

“Instilling a sense of self-worth is essential for boys,” he says.

“Understanding that doing your best is enough can be difficult, especially during periods of transition. Self-doubt often becomes more apparent at these times.”

He emphasises the importance of belonging, confidence, and opportunity. “Boys want to fit in, be accepted and recognised. Exploring a wide range of interests helps them develop identity and self-acceptance. Schools like De La Salle College offer incredible opportunities, in music, sport, service, faith, languages, outdoor education and academics. Making the most of them builds skills, relationships and a stronger sense of self.”

Outside of work, John’s family remains central to his life.

“My boys continue to teach me a lot about myself and relationships,” he says. “They keep me creative and active.”

Travel remains a passion, along with live music and collecting records.

Reflecting on his De La Salle years, John speaks warmly of enduring friendships and values that have stood the test of time. “My closest friendships are still with De La Salle peers I met back in 1987.”

A letter to my English

teacher

When Laughlin Nicholls (Class of 2002) was a student at De La Salle College, numbers came naturally, but English was another story.

Determined to secure the VCE English pass he needed for university, Laughlin sought help from Br Quentin O’Halloran, whose after-hours study sessions were a lifeline for countless students over the years. Under Br Quentin’s guidance, Laughlin not only achieved the results he needed, but he excelled and got into Commerce/Law at The University of Melbourne. He qualified as a lawyer and joined the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), later working with both the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) and the Essential Services Commission. He and his wife Lauren are proud parents of their 10-year-old daughter, Lily.

“I was never an English guy. Honestly, I’m still not. I was a ‘maths guy.’ Numbers made sense; they were clean, logical, and had definitive answers. Essays, however, were a murky swamp I couldn't navigate. To make matters worse, I wasn't exactly clicking with my English teacher. I was drowning, and I needed a lifeline.

That lifeline turned out to be Br Quentin. He wasn’t my teacher. I’m not even sure what his official role was at the time, other than being a permanent fixture of the school's architecture.

Br Quentin would sit with me and review my clumsy attempts at literary analysis and show me how to improve.

He didn't judge me for being a "maths guy" who struggled with metaphors. He just helped. He created a space where it was safe for me to be bad at something so that I could eventually get better.

He was a man of immense, quiet experience. I remember one lunch break, a group of us were fiercely debating a fan theory about the Lord of the Rings movies, which had just come out. Br Quentin listened for a moment, shook his head, and gently explained why we were wrong. When we demanded to know how he could be so sure, he shrugged and said, "Because Tolkien told me otherwise when we spoke about it." We shut up quickly after that.

Because of his help, I didn’t just pass; I did well. When I graduated, I received a card from Br Quentin. In his shaky, cursive script, he wrote he was proud of me. He told me I had "big ideas." He ended the note with a line that I suspect he stole from Gandhi: "Be the change you want to see in the world."

In my work I aim to make sure that people can be themselves and bring their best, trying to create the same kind of environment Br Quentin created for me all those years ago.

I might still be terrible at English, Br Quentin, but I learned the lesson. And I hope you know that you made a difference.”

Br Quentin has retired from the classroom and now resides at Mentone.

Big dreams for season '26

As the May issue of Roll Call goes to print, the 2026 De La Salle Football Club season is kicking off.

On 17 April, the 2026 Season Launch was held at the RACV Club and as always, the event promised to be a tremendous success.

On 18 April, the Seniors opened their Season bid against Collegians at Harry Trott Oval. This year the Senior Men’s team will be hoping to regain their place back in the Premier A Division.

The Under 19 Blues opened their Premier Division season by hosting Old Xaverians at Waverley Oval.

The pre-season preparations were encouraging; the 14 March clash with Under 19 Blues side under new coach Andy Otten, proving too strong for the Yarraville Seddon Eagles.

The Guns, De La’s Senior Women’s team, kicked off their season in winning form against Old Hailebury.

Club President Greg Nichols said that the Season looks promising with players showing exceptional dedication, kicking off their preseason preparations before Christmas and returning with renewed energy in February. “This hard work is already setting the tone for what promises to be a fantastic year,” he said.

“We're thrilled to announce the new leadership group, with Fraser Cameron stepping up as Captain. Fraser will be supported by three Vice Captains: Luke Healy, Tom Filipovic, and Ryan O’Meara. Their leadership and commitment are sure to inspire everyone on and off the field.”

65+ Morning

It was a delightful November Spring morning last year when De La Salle College hosted a 65+ Years Reunion Morning Tea in the acoustically agreeable Performing Arts Centre at the Tiverton campus. The elixir of life has flown freely among those 30 wonderful men, some of them in their 90s. Their common background was schooling by a dedicated band of brothers and teachers, whom they have never forgotten. Four current Year 6 students read the Welcome to Country and Opening Prayer, later answering questions from the gathering, revealing an enthusiasm for sports, music and learning. (These days each student has the opportunity to learn an instrument from their first year in school). The students’ admiration for their teachers was abundant, reaffirming among the guests the respect that we too shared for our memorable teachers over past decades. The congenial two hours were filled with memories and anecdotes, recalling events as if they happened yesterday. Class of 2021

The Class of 2021 gathered for their five-year reunion at Huzzah Glen Iris, marking a special occasion for Old Collegians to reconnect, renew friendships, and reflect on their journeys since departing the College. The evening provided a relaxed and welcoming setting for classmates to exchange stories, celebrate achievements, and rediscover the shared bonds formed during their school years. As is always the case at a De La Salle reunion, the breadth of experiences and career pathways on display were both striking and inspiring. Alumni shared insights from a wide range of fields, including engineering, law, trades, social work, surveying, retail, and hospitality, among many others. This diversity served as a powerful reminder of the many ways in which a De La Salle College education equips students to pursue fulfilling and meaningful paths. While much of the conversation naturally turned to future ambitions and aspirations, the reunion was also an opportunity to look back with fondness and nostalgia, reminiscing about life at the College and the memories that continue to connect the Class of 2021. Vale Br Bill Firman

The College community was saddened by the loss of former College Principal and beloved Old Collegian, Br Bill Firman fsc (Class of 1960) who passed away on 15 November 2025 at Launceston Hospital. Members of the College community, the Firman family and friends attended his funeral on 25 November at St Patrick’s Mentone.

Br Bill was born William Martin Firman on 19 May 1943, in Windsor. He was the son of James and Mary (nee Uden) Firman (dec.), brother of Jack (Class of 1957), Patricia (dec.) and Ronald (Class of 1953) (dec). Br Bill was a beloved and highly respected member of the De La Salle Brothers for 63 years.

Br Bill was a remarkable Lasallian whose life was woven deeply into the story of De La Salle College. Living nearby, Br Bill first walked through the College gates as a student in 1951 and later served as College Captain in 1960. In 2005, Br Bill proudly returned to De La Salle College to serve as Headmaster, completing a full circle of service to the community that first formed him.

He joined the De La Salle Brothers soon after graduation and returned to De La Salle College as a teacher in 1972 and 1973, shaping the lives of students with his gentle strength and commitment to excellence. Br Bill was Headmaster of St Bede’s College Mentone from 1974 to 1987 before being elected Congregational Leader for the De La Salle Brothers in Australia, PNG and NZ, a role he held from 1988 until 1992.

His leadership journey continued as the Principal, Director at BoysTown Beaudesert, followed by his appointment as Principal of Francis Douglas Memorial College in New Zealand. In 2003, Br Bill returned to BoysTown as Executive Director, guiding programs that later included Kids Helpline.

His later ministry in South Sudan, working in Solidarity with South Sudan, extended this same dedication to some of the most vulnerable communities in the world. There he helped establish teacher-training programs, schools and health initiatives that continue to transform lives today, a testament to his lifelong belief that education can be a force for peace and hope.

Br Peter Bray fsc, The Brother Visitor said that Br Bill will be remembered for his calm presence, his steady belief in their potential, and his ability to make each person feel valued.

“Br Bill’s way of being that remains most vivid for those who knew him,” Br Peter said. “He was unfailingly compassionate and patient in conversation, generous with his time, and quick to offer encouragement or a quiet word of wisdom. He engaged people in a manner that communicated genuine care: he listened, he noticed and he remembered. Many will recognise the gentle humour, the reflective insight, and the kindness that made encounters with him both reassuring and uplifting. His little acts of kindness, as well as his big acts, reflected his deep commitment to enrich the lives of those he encountered.”

“Br Bill lived his vocation with humility and grace, and his influence continues in the countless lives he touched.

He was a true brother to those with whom he engaged.

As we give thanks for his remarkable contribution, we also honour the spirit of a man who showed us, in simple and consistent ways, what it means to live the Gospel through service and compassion.”

With the final cohort of Primary students completing their journey in December 2025, it feels timely to reflect on the role of the De La Salle Primary in the history, and the growth of the College.

As many readers will know, the College began in 1912 with primary-aged students. Three temporary classes were established in St Joseph’s Parish Hall in February, before moving later that year into a newly built school on Stanhope St West. That original building still stands today, although its future remains uncertain. Following the College’s move in 1929 to the Tower building on the corner of Stanhope and Dalny Streets, the site was sold to the The Victorian Tramways. It was later used as offices and, more recently, as a Tramway Museum.

The College opened with 54 students, growing to 80 by its official opening in April 1912. Students were encouraged to participate fully in College life, including sport and the Surplice Choir at St Joseph’s Church.

By 1928 the Preparatory classes (Years 1-6) were taught in large, multi-aged groupings. The following year, St Joseph’s Primary School was established and operated independantly by the De La Salle Brothers.

In 1953, the Kinnoull property was purchased and converted to the Kinnoull Preparatory School, with the entrance off Sorrett Ave and the homestead used as classrooms for a number of years. By 1954, the school was running classes for Years 3 to 6 with a total of 135 students.

Around this time, Mrs Mitchell taught the Year 3 class and remained in the Primary school until retirement in 1974.

In 1984, Br James Taylor announced that students from Years 4 to 10 would be based at the High Street Campus (now Tiverton), aiming to maximise resources and avoid duplication across sites.

By 1992, the Primary program had expanded significantly, including a Year 6 band program, specialist classes in Art, Technology, Music and Drama, an early computer-based LEGO system and a Bike Education Safety program for Years 4 to 6.

A decade later, students were participating in Interschool Chess Championships, Netball and Soccer Lightning Premierships, tennis clinics, outdoor education camps and musical productions.

By 2016, classroom experiences had further evolved, with students working alongside Year 11 and 12 VCAL students, participating in Book Week activities, and learning coding and programming through the CSIRO ICT In-Schools program. These opportunities fostered confidence, connection and a strong sense of belonging through mentorship with senior students.

Where are they Michael Gleeson (Class of 1986) was named the Harry Gordon Australian Sports Journalist of the Year at the Melbourne Press Club’s Quill Awards for Journalistic Excellence in March. Michael has been a senior sportswriter with The Age since 2005.

Christopher Horan KC (Class of 1985) was appointed as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia in the Victorian registry on 5 September 2023.

Previously Christopher was admitted in the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1992 and was called to the Bar in 2000 and took silk in 2015. He graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws (Honours).

Zac Hawker (Class of 2016) is a Project Engineer with Lendlease. Zac graduated from RMIT University with a Bachelor of Applied Science (Construction Management).

Angus Gill (Class of 2024) is working at the St Kilda Football Club and has a regular gig on Radio Bay FM 88.3. He recently commenced in the sales department at the St Kilda footy Club.

Kai Bloomfield (Class of is 2019) is the founder of Train Stop, Australia’s Number 1 sports recruitment App, uniting clubs with top talent and players.

Rob Curtain (Class of 1985) is a senior media and communications specialist with skills developed through leadership roles in broadcasting and news management. He is the Principal of Rob Curtain Media and Communications and previously worked for Fairfax Radio Network in a number of roles including the National News Director. For the last 10 years he has also lectured in the Journalism program at Deakin University.

Chris Draffen (Class of 2012) is an Associate at Doogue & George in Melbourne. Chris was previously associate to Justice Walker in the Court of Appeal, where he worked on a wide range of sentence and conviction appeals. He has also advised clients at Refugee Legal and Justice Connect in a pro bono capacity. Overseas, Chris worked on the U.S. House Judiciary Committee’s 2019 inquiry that resulted in impeachment. Chris holds Bachelor of Arts and Laws from Monash University with First Class Honours and a Master of Laws from New York State University.

Tony Hegan (Class of 1985) and his wife Caz are proud parents to two daughters, Rosie (26) and Eliza (23). Tony began his career in the International Trade Division at ANZ before moving into a sales manager role with Modmac Industries. His brothers Michael (1981), Paul (1987), Gavin (1989), and David (1992) are also Old Collegians.

Greg Power (Class of 1985) is the Head of Commercial Partnerships (ROOH) for Cartology, (Woolworth’s media business). Greg has more than 20 years’ experience as a media analyst and innovator for a number of companies including Suez Australia and New Zealand and The Media Shop.

Sam Ayre (Class of 2009) is Head of Marketing at Cuttable.

Previously Sam was the Brand Lead for Medibank and a Senior Account Director for DDBO in Melbourne and Clemenger DDBO in London, where he launched a new brand for Mars.

While at DDB he was a Finalist in the Young Marketer of the Year.

Sam and his wife Marlee recently welcomed a new baby, a little brother to Quinn (3) and Mia (6).

Tom Hanney (Class of 2011) and his wife Eliza welcomed a son, Jack in December 2024.

Leon Daphne (Class of 1957) attended the 65+ Years Reunion Morning Tea in November. Before retiring Leon was the managing director of Nissan Australia and President of the Richmond Football Club from 1994-1999. He recently attended the 65+ Plus Reunion where he caught up with Roll Call editor, Kerry Martin.

Andrew Robertson (Class of 1985) is the Managing Director – Andrew J Robertson Plumbing, a family owned and operated business. Andrew and his wife Cate’s two sons Liam (2021) and Nick (2018) attended the College.

John Davies and Michael Coughlan (Class of 1960) began singing together in De La Salle choirs around 1958 under the tutelage of Br Gerard Rummery. 67 years on they are back together again, still singing the Bass line. Michael Bohan (Class of 2010) is a House Coordinator at St Bede’s College. Previously he taught at Whitefriars.

Patrick Bohan (Class of 2018) is an Analyst at Deloitte and plays with DLSOCFC Senior Football team.

Peter Bohan (Class of 2021) is studying Architecture at RMIT and works part time at Architects Ewert-Leaf.

Val Noone (Class of 1955) has published a new book, Melbourne YCW Origins 1941. The book includes a section on Frank Maher (Class of 1923) who was a co-founder of The Campion Society which encouraged the foundation of the YCW. Val has donated a copy of his book to the College Library, where it is available for loan.

Pierluigi Grech (Class of 2013) and his wife Salma welcomed their first child, Luigi, on 5 November.

Pierluigi completed a carpentry apprenticeship and now runs his own custom-made furniture business.

David Hawkins (Class of 1986) has stepped down from his role as the Chair and Managing Director, BASF Australia, and New Zealand. David worked with BASF for 26 years and was Chair for almost 10 years. David also works for Chemistry Australia where he is part time Chair.

Tom Christiansen (Class of 2016) is a Corporate Accountant with DGB Health. He graduated from RMIT University with a Bachelor of Business (Financial Planning) and a Master of Professional Accounting (Accounting and Finance).

James Rodda (Class of 2002) is a Portfolio Manager for Antipodes. Previously, James was an investment analyst in the Asia team at Platinum Asset Management and the Head of Financial Institutions at ANZ Papua New Guinea. James holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting and Finance from Monash University in Melbourne. He has also completed a Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance at FINSIA and a Graduate Certificate of Management (Leadership and Negotiation) from Melbourne Business School.
