NEW CENTER HOUSES
HISTORY OF DEK A L B C O U NTY Thank you to the donors whose gifts make grants like these possible! On March 1, 2018, something historical happened in DeKalb County; the DeKalb County History Center was formed. This new organization was a result of a partnership between the Sycamore History Museum and the Joiner History Room, with collaboration from 20-plus local history organizations throughout the county. With a new organization formed, talk of the new facility began.
“The idea for a new building was to create a space to tell stories through exhibits, offer programs, assist researchers, and connect these visitors to the other great historical resources throughout the county” said Michelle Donahoe, History Center Executive Director. In August of 2018, the History Center broke ground on the new building. Through generous community donations and a $75,000 Community Needs Grant from the DeKalb County Community Foundation, the new 7,600 square-foot facility was erected.
The grand opening took place on Saturday May 11, 2019. The new building includes a 1,200-squarefoot exhibit space, the Joiner History Room, a multi-purpose room, and a large area for collection storage. Funding for the Community Needs Grant program is made possible through ongoing donor generosity to COMMUNITY IMPACT FUNDS at the Foundation.
On August 12, 2019, a large refrigeration unit at the Voluntary Action Center (VAC) broke down. This unit was located at the Fox Valley Community Services kitchen where they feed approximately 150 seniors and individuals with disabilities in

southern DeKalb and Northern LaSalle Counties. With the unit out of commission, the cooks were faced with a troubling situation. How would they continue to provide meals for the senior lunch program, adult day service, and Meals on Wheels home delivery meal program? “Fresh food delivery schedules were adjusted during the transition,” said Mike Neuenkirchen, Vice President of South Region Operations at Voluntary Action Center of DeKalb County. “Without a new refrigerator, however, we were concerned we might have to shift food preparation to our Sycamore site which would lead to a reduction in services.”
VAC applied for emergency funding from the DeKalb County Community Foundation to replace the refrigerator, finding a good replacement unit at a great price through a food equipment distributor. Through the Community Foundation’s Emergency Grants program, funding was approved and the new refrigerator was delivered on September 9, 2019. Funding for the Emergency Grant program is made possible through ongoing donor generosity to COMMUNITY IMPACT FUNDS at the Community Foundation. Voluntary Action Center of DeKalb County provides quality nutrition and transportation for seniors, individuals with disabilities, and the public.
