We are delighted to present to you the English translation of Alexandre Gefen’s influential book Réparer le monde. Drawing on 21s-century French literature, it questions the classical functions of literature and proposes a new way of writing (and reading) literary history.
With the launch of the series Images of Disability and (Re)visionen, we are expanding our core philological program to also include important impulses from cultural studies. The thematic cluster Literature and Environment is also gaining in profile, linking literary studies with issues in the environmental humanities, seen particularly in our SubAtlantic series.

This volume examines specialist dictionaries of sexual vocabulary in French from the perspective of emancipation and presents the history of this so far largely overlooked text type. A close gender and taboo-linguistic analysis of six works from the late nineteenth and twentieth/twenty-first centuries reveals which sexual practices were recorded lexicographically, how they were evaluated, and how gender roles were distributed. The book constitutes the first systematic analysis of meta-discourse in the spoken domain, by focussing on comment clauses (e. g. ‘I think’) in present-day Italian. Based on a semantic and structural analysis, this study shows that speakers switch from discourse to meta-discourse to make their subjective and textual stance explicit and to refer to the relation with the hearer. Comment clauses tend to conventionalize along specific paths of change.

This book provides an empirical perspective on word order variation in Italian and Spanish why-interrogatives. Specifically, it shows that subject positioning is restricted differently in the two languages. In Italian, focus plays a determining role, while subject type and the heaviness of the subject affect its position in Spanish. It is argued that these differences arise due to differences in the checking of the extended projection principle.

This work proposes an adaptation of Agha’s theory of enregisterment (2007) to study the Spanish variety spoken in Equatorial Guinea, which has received little attention from linguistics so far. The study opts for a socio-cognitive and perceptual approach that starts from speakers themselves as experts of linguistic variation.

In stratigraphy, “Subatlantic’’ refers to the climatic age the end of which we are currently living through. The SubAtlantic series challenges us to cross-map climate history and environmental crisis with the world-ecological chronotope of the Iberian South Atlantic.
While colonial expansion triggered monocrop plantations, extractive networks, genocide and enslavement, this world-ecological formation has also been a hotbed of resilient imaginaries of survivance and alliance-making among existents, from Caribbean Maroon ecologies to the multinaturalist ontologies of Amazonian and Andean societies as well as their reconfigurations in contemporary activisms and artistic practice.
Spanning the field in its geographical and historical breadth, as well as challenging polarized cartographies between North/South or center/periphery, we welcome submissions in the environmental humanities that are conversant with areas of innovation and expansion, including but not limited to animal, plant and fungal studies; energy humanities; hydroaesthetics; art-science activisms; transfeminist and queer ecocriticisms.

When Keith Busby published Codex and Context in 2002, it was called ‘groundbreaking’ and ‘monumental’, prompting medievalists to return to manuscripts in their droves. Busby’s book also enacted another movement. His formulation of the term ‘medieval Francophonia’ to describe the presence and effect of French outside France filtered into scholarship. This volume brings together cutting-edge studies of medieval Francophonia to honour Keith Busby.

Cet ouvrage est consacré à une analyse du rapport exixstant entre l’organisation textuelle des recueils lyriques de Cavalcanti, Dante et Pétrarque et la construction du sujet lyrique dans cette poésie amoureuse. Entre ruptures et émulations, le conflit de subjectivités, entre un sujet actif et volitif et un sujet passif, escamote un conflit de temporalité, entre téléologie du récit et circularité lyrique.
This book studies the relationship between the textual organization of Cavalcanti’s, Dante’s, and Petrarch’s lyric collections and the construction of the lyric subject in this type of love poetry. Between ruptures and competition, the conflict of subjectivities, i.e. between an active, volitional subject and a passive subject, veils a conflict of temporality, between teleology of the narration and lyric circularity.

The book deals with the phenomenon of animism as a philosophical proposal to understand historical formations of individuality, the emergence of new forms of subjectivity and the contemporary planetary crisis. The series (Re)visionen aims at a revision of the literary canon analyzing Italian and Romance literary and cultural history according to gender-inclusive, comparative, intermedial, and transnational criteria. Not only does it place a special focus on often disregarded authors, texts, and media (such as films, series, and blogs), but it also fosters new readings of canonized works, for example, by considering findings from emotion research and modern subject theory. Among the topics thus analyzed from new perspectives are European and postcolonial narratives of eating disorders and the menstrual cycle, which has been present as a literary motif since Dante’s Divina commedia and Boccaccio’s Corbaccio, yet without ever being considered in literary studies.

Probus is a platform for the discussion of historical and synchronic research in the field of Latin and Romance linguistics, with special emphasis on phonology, morphology, syntax, language acquisition and sociolinguistics. The journal encourages problem-oriented contributions that combine the solid empirical foundations of philological and linguistic work with the insights provided by modern theoretical approaches.
